All aboard!
I was amazed at an article that I read recently, where it is recommended that Tai Chi is the answer to all of our swing problems. The Tiger Woods phenomana still grows whereby if you’re not as supple as a Russian Gymnast or as strong as an Olympic weight-lifteryou've got no chance! Makes one wonder- what next? Maybe pole dancing will become an essential to lowering your scores! One wonders if the “Belly dancing your way to better golf ” DVD will become a bestseller? I say bring it on. Let everyone get involved in our great sport! So long golf keeps producing young stars such as Rory Mclroy. What a flawless display of shotmaking at the U.S. Open. Apparently his father placed a 500 pound bet at 500/1 odds when he was 15, that he would win the British Open before the age of 25! Looks like a good bet! Enjoy

Part 3 of 3 in our series on how the golf course superintendents get the courses ready for tournament play. Brought to you by Sue de Zwart, who was golf course superintendent at Leopard Creek Country Club from 1997 to 2005. Sue has worked at four U.S. Masters and two U.S. Opens.
Final Tournament Preparation: The final stage is exciting & critical as any errors made at this stage are tough to recover from. Ensure that the course staff is fully aware of the goals you have for the course & that you are working well as a team – the success of a tournament is all about great teamwork.
1 month prior to the event: This is a time to go through all the items which should have been ordered by this stage.
Checklist: Staff uniforms & meals - this is a demanding time for the team so important to keep the energy levels up with wholesome food.
Accessories & Tools: • • • • • •
Hole in white paint for cup painting – 12 to be safe, Red & yellow paint for hazard marking if you have to supply – 24 of each colour. Rakes – sufficient rakes for bunker team including volunteers Blowers – ensure that they have all been serviced Whipping poles or hose pipes for dew removal & breaking down clippings – tyre tracks can make or break the appearance of a course on TV – so ensure this team is critical. Plastic rakes also work well for standing the grass up Hose pipes with misting nozzles or preferably knapsacks in case of heat
Fuel – ensure that you have sufficient fuel & oil for the event.
Equipment: • Reels should all be sent for grinding to ensure a perfect cut for the event • Change bedknives where necessary a week before the event • Check all hydraulic hoses – remind operators to continuously check for a hydraulic leak. • If you have mowers working in teams give them each a tennis ball in the event of a leak or bad cut they are able to use the ball to catch another operator’s attention. • Ensure that you have sufficient spares on hand & extra hands in the workshop for the week of the tournament. 4

SPECIAL FEATURE
Response Vehicle: I like to have 1 or 2 of these set up for the practise rounds as well as the tournament days. Have 1 stationed in the middle of each 9 for the duration of play. Good to have this vehicle manned by two staff if possible & they should be in radio contact with the rest of the team. The rules officials should also know where the response vehicle is stationed.
Staff Training & Briefing: Draw up a tournament schedule & begin briefing the staff for a few weeks leading up to the event Ensure that every staff member understands their tasks & do training of all the various tasks. Greens: Mowing directions – generally just alternate the direction with each cut & I like to mow until there is no grass coming off for a perfect green. Irrigation team – full briefing & training on irrigation practises for the event. Training on how to water dry spots, hot areas early in the morning before play-by hand. Syringing if absolutely necessary during play or what I have found works well is a knapsack for hot spots. Pitch mark repairing – this can make or break a green. I can never understand this – so many people spend months preparing these fantastic greens, but spend so little time & effort repairing pitch marks during an event. Have a team of 5 people per nine with at least 2 permanent staff each side. Train your staff prior to the event & train the volunteers on their arrival on the Monday practise round. I like to use a sharpened piece of wire to knit pitch marks together & roll it flat with a 10cm long piece of a rake or broom handle. Ensure that this team is wearing flat soled shoes. If it is really hot give this team a 2 litre coke bottle of water to give some water to these spots. You will be surprised what a difference this makes – particularly after the pro-am. Make sure every pitch mark if repaired every afternoon from Monday to Saturday.
Cup Cutting: Take time to teach the staff how to replace the cup. Rule number 1 – knit the dot marking the cup away prior to changing the cup. Ensure that the rules official or pro shop for normal play knows to remove the cap off the paint can & gently push the nozzle onto the spot to create a 1cm dot. Another pet hate of mine when I see a green with dots all over it! Once the cup has been changed it must be neatly knitted together to ensure it is not visible – the same wire used for pitch mark repairing is perfect. Cup Painting – There is nothing better than a well painted cup. TV really highlights a poorly painted cup. Practise this in the nursery for 2 weeks prior to the event. A good tip is to put an old cloth in the cup to avoid paint running down & quickly wipe after spraying before the paint dries. July/August 2011

WINNING LETTER Hi Neville I picked up a magazine of yours the other day which made interesting reading, it was very informative. I have been interested in playing golf for a while now and was wondering which would be the best way to start, in terms of buying clubs etc.Can you offer any advice on how I would make a start, where I can start practicing, driving ranges etc etc -I live in the kloof area. I am also going down to East London in about 2 weeks time, for business and pleasure, and then possibly on to Mossel Bay to visit my daughter. Would you be able to recommend a couple of golf courses to visit down there? My daughter incidentally has also expressed an interest in playing golf,
it would be ideal for me to spend quality time with her on the golf course. She has passed her commercial pilots licence and just needs to complete more practical flying time to enable her to fly for gain. I also think it would be an ideal opportunity for her to pick up possible business opportunities on the golf course. Thanks for a great magazine. I look forward to hearing from you Best regards Irven Eggeling
Dear Irven Thanks for writing in, it is great to hear that you are thinking of playing golf. I am not sure if you have never played the game before or if you are picking it up after a break. However as far as advice on clubs etc, I would recommend that you pop into Kloof Country Club and have a chat to Thomas Raatgever who is the professional there. He will assist you with all your needs. Have a chat with the general manager and find out what a membership will cost you as this will save you money down the line if you are going to play on a regular basis. East London Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in South Africa and is home to the prestigious Africa Open, you would do well to pay them a visit. As far as Mossel Bay goes there are two options, Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort and the Mossel Bay Golf Club. Pinnacle Point is a dramatic course which can be difficult depending of the elements whilst Mossel Bay Golf Club touts itself as the “friendly club and it certainly is. It would be hard to beat the quality time that you and your daughter could spend playing golf together, It is great that she has her commercial pilots licence and she will undoubtedly benefit from playing golf both from a social and a business point of view. I wish you all the best and hope that you make good use of the R500 PGA voucher that is on its way to you. Regards
Congratulations to Irven - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! July/August 2011

Garth Mulroy wins BMW Charity ProAm in playoff
G
REENVILLE, S.C. – Nobody was more surprised than Garth Mulroy when South Korea's Sunghoon Kang missed a short par putt on the first extra hole to hand Mulroy the title at BMW Charity Pro-Am, his first victory in more than two years.
Mulroy (67) and Kang (69) finished four rounds tied at 18 under and were forced into the season's first playoff. Kang, a conditional member of the PGA tour making his initial career start on the Nationwide Tour, blasted out of a front bunker to within three feet. He then watched as Mulroy two-putted for par from 18 feet, leaving Kang to knock in a short one and return to the tee at the 491-yard, par-4, 18th hole. "You never expect someone to miss from that distance but it happens," said Mulroy. "I was pretty shocked. I was probably already to the front of the green and thinking about the tee shot." Instead, he can turn his attention to returning to the PGA TOUR, where he played last year. Mulroy collected a check for $108,000 and vaulted from No. 68 to No. 2 on the money list. July/August 2011

Buying used golf balls online!
W
e are constantly asked by readers where they can find good quality used golf balls. Now there are several people selling really good quality used balls, however, we wanted to see what we could come up with on the internet. After googling “used golf balls South Africa” we came across a company with the interesting name of www.WeGotBalls.co.za. We decided to put them to the test. They describe themselves as “South Africa’s recycled golf ball online-superstore” and they certainly have a vast variety of golf balls. But I was interested in the quality and I saw that they grade their balls by hand according to colour and cover condition; they are then sorted into mint, near mint and playable condition.
I noticed that were selling 12 Callaway Tour i(s) balls in mint condition for a very reasonable price and that 12 Titleist NXT Extreme near mint were also a good bargain, I decided to purchase these. After a quick & easy registration process (you receive a 5% discount on your first purchase) I elected to pay by EFT. WeGotBalls accept all the major credit cards and payments are processed using PayFast and PayPal although there is also a registration process involved here so I decided to go the EFT route. I received an email confirming my order as pending and when they received my payment I then got an email saying that my order had been shipped. WeGotBalls offer two options for shipping, via courier or the postal service. Either way you receive a tracking number so that you know exactly where your goods are.
I used the overnight courier service (slightly more expensive but when I did all the calculations the balls were still a very good price) which delivered the next day to my door. The BIG question was about to be answered, how good would the balls be? Well after unwrapping July/August 2011
them, I could see immediately that they were indeed mint condition! I really and truly was impressed and there is very little difference between the mint and near mint balls. I only wish that I had ordered some playable condition balls but I certainly will in the future, as I will definitely use WeGotBalls again. Purchasing online is still new to many people but our experience here was firstrate, browsing the site was easy, payment was seamless, delivery was prompt and the product lived up to it’s description. WeGotBalls also do accessories (pencils, tees etc) and Driving Range equipment.
Advantages of buying online • The convenience of 24 hour a day shopping from home. • Goods are often cheaper as the seller does not have all the costs associated with running a shop. • Online shopping can also be a lot more comfortable than real world shopping as you do not have to deal with the weather. • You have the opportunity to compare as many products and prices as you want without having to spend the time and money to travel between several different shops. • You can read reviews that have been written by other people who have purchased the item you are considering; you will be able to find out about the item from a genuine user not just the salesperson.
Disadvantages of buying online • You have to pay shipping costs and have to wait for the items you purchased to be shipped and delivered. You will not be able to purchase an item you need to use immediately online. • You have to buy the item relying purely on a photograph and description. • It is harder and takes longer to return faulty goods.

arys is the gateway to the Vredefort Dome (the largest and oldest meteorite impact site in the world) an area that has been awarded World Heritage Site status. The town was named by the town’s German surveyor, who named it after Paris, France, due to the similarity between the Vaal River and the River Seine, which flows through Paris. Vaal de Grace Golf Estate and Parys Golf & Country Estate lie on the banks of the Vaal River here. Further up the river in the town of Vanderbijlpark lies the Emfuleni Golf Estate, whilst Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club is found on the northern side of the river and Maccauvlei Golf Club on the southern side of the river some 15 kilometers further along in Vereeniging. SPECIAL FEATURE – GOLF ON THE VAAL
Situated on a 110-hectare island just outside the town of Parys and enveloped by the tranquil waters of the mighty Vaal River lies Nick Price’s first South African signature golf course. Nick Price has created something unique, something that fits no other niche than its own; a friendly course layout providing an enjoyable round for amateurs, yet still challenging enough for the professional golfer. This par 72 measures 6060m from the club tees and 6711m from end to end. It would be hard to find a more unique golfing experience anywhere in the world than on this natural island. It brings an indescribable peace to your soul when you here the sound of the Fish Eagle echoing or notice the impala, springbok and blesbok grazing just a couple of metres away from you as you approach your next shot towards the green. Another uniqueness added to Vaal de Gráce Golf Estate is the fact that the Free Sate / North West border runs through the middle of this island, giving the golfer an opportunity to brag about how he managed to hit his ball from the Free State right into the North West. At Vaal de Gráce you can expect to be well looked after on the deck of the beautifully arranged Clubhouse overlooking the Vaal River, whilstenjoy a hearty meal from an Ala Carte menu. They also welcome formal bookings for special occasions like birthdays, business meetings and romantic dinners. he unique surrounding, in which the town of Parys is situated, had its origin roughly around 2000 million years ago when a giant meteorite struck the earth just south east of Vredefort in the Free State Province. The impact structure that was subsequently formed has come to be known as the Vredefort Dome, the oldest and largest meteorite impact site on earth, measuring about 200km in diameter.
There have been several suggestions put forward about the origin of the name Parys, the most commonly accepted being that it was suggested by Mr. Schillbach, a German land survivor who had served in the Franco – Prussian war, and had taken part siege of Paris. Apparently the events were still fresh in his memory five years later and he likened the Vaal River to the Seine and prophesied that a day would come when a big town would lie on both sides of the river, just like Paris. To carry on the similitude he named the two adjoining farms Issy and Versailles, after two of the forts that were outside the French capital. Geographically, Parys is one of the most centrally situated towns in South Africa, with 75% of the country’s population living within a 200 km radius! Unique features in and around Parys are:The islands that are dotted along the Vaal River, the largest indoor horse arena in the Southern Hemisphere and the largest thatched structure in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the only place on earth where you will find pink granite.

any of the guesthouses in Parys have the added attraction of being on the banks of the Vaal River which contribute to a breathtaking view. (Kayanzee Lodge where we stayed whilst in Parys was a good example of this and it must be said that the hospitality that we received there was outstanding, the fact that the Cheetahs beat the Crusaders on that weekend made things even better, I would highly recommend Kayanzee Lodge). Others are within walking distance of the famous Breë Street with all its little shops. A short walk through the tree lined streets in this relatively crime free town might just be what is needed to get rid of all the daily stress of city life. The visitor will soon learn that most of the guesthouses have something to make them unique. This may range from heated swimming pools to guesthouses being 120 years old. Some of these places boast with original steel ceilings and floor boards. There are so many alternatives and it is not everyday that you can tell a friend that you stayed in a luxury tent in the heart of a crater, or that mountain rock forms part of your bedroom wall. It is definitely not every day that a fisherman can tell you that he caught the big one from his veranda. Whether you are looking for a quiet place in or out of town, something in the mountains, on the river, near the shops, buzzing with people or away from it all you are sure to find accommodation to suit your every need.

Live the golfing and river lifestyle at Heron Banks Golf & River Estate
H
aving taken over the Heron Banks Golf and River Estate development on the banks of the popular Vaal River, premier Gauteng property developer Sable Homes re-launched this prime investment in May 2011.
Says Anthony Bonnett, MD of Sable Homes: “We have invested much time and expertise in the project to bring it to a standard we know suits the market looking for a residential haven.” So far, Bonnett says 101 of the 268 fully serviced, full title stands available in Phase 1 of the development have been sold. In partnering with Nedbank Corporate Property Finance on the Heron Banks project, Sable Homes secured some 2.5km of some of the best quality river frontage on the Free State bank of the Vaal River, as well as a USPGA standard Danie Obermeyer-designed 18 hole golf course. With a golf course rating of Par 72 and part of the course situated in parkland surrounds with river frontage and wetland holes, the golf course promises to be challenging, yet still catering for both the novice and the seasoned golfer. The course offers a distinct links feel to the golfer. The first 9 holes are currently under construction, and should be playable by mid 2012, with the remaining 9 holes due for construction thereafter. Full golf course facilities will be available in future phases of the Heron Banks development, and will include a clubhouse, Pro Shop, Driving Range and Putting and Chipping Greens. “The estate is all about lifestyle,” says Bonnett, “particularly for those who want to wake up to beautiful natural parklands and wetlands with biologically diverse landscaping and abundant bird 30
life. It’s ideal for families, young executives and retired people who need to be within easy reach of Johannesburg – but without the traffic and bustle.” Stand prices start at R775 000 and premium quality building packages at R1.996, stand included. Bond Registration and Conveyancing fees are included in the price. All buildings packages have been architecturally designed, but buyers may use their own architects, in compliance with Heron Banks architectural and landscape guidelines. “The first of the sectional title townhouse developments at Heron Banks have also been launched, and by all expectations will be extremely popular,” says Bonnett. Key to the “lifestyle appeal” concept is boat launching facilities available for use on-site and boathouses that may be purchased by Heron Banks owners at a later stage. “A clubhouse and conference facilities to be built along with future phases will complete this inspirational offering, and Sable Homes is well underway already with construction on the gatehouse and the boundary walls, along with the gatehouse and entrance boulevard landscaping. ” Just a 60 minute drive from Johannesburg, and 15 minutes from Sasolburg makes Heron Banks an ideal holiday home or permanent residence. SPECIAL FEATURE – LOMBARD INSURANCE CLASSIC
Sweet win for Justin as he takes Lombard Insurance Classic MBABANE (Swaziland), June 5 – He was still shaking as he greeted the jubilant caddies, and Justin Harding felt his second career victory was sweeter than his first as he won the R850,000 Lombard Insurance Classic. He carded a final round two-under-par 70 over the 6,140-metre par 72 Royal Swazi Spa golf course to edge veteran Neil Cheetham by one stroke on a day on which fortunes fluctuated constantly.
His approach was just off the green to the right, and his chip came up just six feet short.
“It was hard work out there,” Harding confessed. “I had a bad start, but I managed to hang in there, and although I wasn’t as good on the greens, I managed to make the one extra putt when I needed it.”
That birdie gave him the lead after Cheetham had moved to 14-under with a birdie of his own on 17. But he gave up the initiative as he found the bunker in front of the green with his tee shot on the 175-metre par-three 18th. His sand shot was short, and he missed the 10-footer for par – and the door was open for Harding.
He was referring to the birdie he made on 502metre 17th which gave him the lead for the final time.
38
“I wanted to hit that chip to gimme distance, and I was so pleased to make the six-footer,” he said.

SPECIAL FEATURE – LOMBARD INSURANCE CLASSIC
In fact, Harding had steadied his ship after bogeys on two and four, and birdies on three, seven and 11 took him to the front again. That birdie on the 400-metre par-four– the most difficult hole on the course. His main rival Louis de Jager made bogey. The two-stroke swing saw Harding draw level with De Jager in the battle of the two players in search of their second victory.
In the meanwhile, Cheetham took on the 12th and made eagle to lift himself into contention. He followed it up with a birdie on 13, and he was suddenly in the race for the title. De Jager held on for third with his two-under-par 70, while behind him, Jaco Ahlers carded the round of the day, his 66 lifting him into fourth place. It was his first top-10 since October last year. “It might give me enough money to resume my attempt at making it on the Asian Tour,” he said. “I’ve played one event there, and haven’t been able to afford to get back. In fact, I nearly didn’t make it to the previous tournament in Swaziland, because I didn’t have the money. This is a huge relief for me, and the product of practice, practice and more practice.” Harding’s win lifted him into the top 30 on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, and adds to the first victory he won last October in the Vodacom Origins of Golf series at Oubaai.

SPECIAL FEATURE – THE CHERRY CLASSIC
The Alliance Cherry Classic – An event not to be missed!
A
nother year has passed remarkably fast and the Alliance Cherry Classic is once again on the horizon. As with most of the country the months since the last Cherry Classic have been accompanied by vast amounts of rain which has brought with it mixed blessings. The Ficksburg Golf Club, like so many others, has experienced flooding and damage which has kept their small green keeping staff extremely busy (and a tight budget even tighter!). They have been extremely fortunate not to experience the damage suffered by many other courses.
In 2010 a “bigger and better than ever” Alliance Cherry Classic was promised. 2011 sees the 25th hosting of the Cherry Classic. The fact that the Cherry Classic has been running for this length of time and the success of the 2010 Alliance Cherry Classic, is due to many reasons. One of the most important is the players. Many visitors from all over South Africa have returned year after year. Ficksburg Golf Club is extremely grateful to the loyal supporters of the Cherry Classic.
It is always dangerous to single out people, but they make special mention of the Tanglewood crowd from Johannesburg who always bring great spirit on to the course and into the 19th. Last year Clinton Whitelaw and Louis Naude from this magazine attended, they both had a fantastic time and Ficksburg Golf Club was thrilled to have an ex-SA Open Champion in the field. Loyal supporters will see a number of significant changes to the facilities from last year. These changes were brought about by the vision of younger members, the generous support of spon40
sors and the hard work and commitment of members. The younger members of any club are its future, and occasionally the “Old Guys” need to step aside and give the youngster’s freedom to show their skills and talents. Smaller rural golf clubs all find it extremely difficult to attract sponsorship for events such as the Cherry Classic; however, for the first time in the history of the Cherry Classic they have had the very generous support of a large sponsor, Alliance Insurance Company. Their generous sponsorship is a massive support to golf in the “platteland”. The support given to and the success of the 2010 Alliance Cherry Classic has enabled the club to continue improving facilities. They have planned a number of improvements to the course, as well as the clubhouse, to make the Cherry Classic a “bigger and better” experience for all. This also takes an enormous amount of pressure off the organising committee and enables the club to pay more attention to finer details, thereby providing their supporters with a great golfing and social experience. Ficksburg Golf Club invites any other parties that would be interested in becoming involved in the Cherry Classic and thereby assisting in keeping golf alive and well in the rural parts of the country to contact them. Ficksburg has unfortunately been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, but Ficksburg Golf Club would like to invite you all to enjoy their hospitality and experience Ficksburg - The Town with a Heart. They look forward to seeing all the old familiar faces and to making many new and lasting friends.

SPECIAL FEATURE – THE MOHOKARE CLASSIC
Two days of golf on two century old golf courses – in two different countries!
F
ounded in 1904, Ladybrand Golf Club is now 107 years old. Only fifteen kilometers from the Lesotho border, the Mohokare Classic starts on this 18-holer on the 21st of October and then moves across the border into Lesotho where on the 22nd it is played at the Maseru Golf Club which is a 9-hole course. Maseru Golf Club was founded in 1891, that is 120 years ago; the clubs premier trophy was the Hopson Medal which was first played for in 1895. The club is adjacent to the Maseru Sun and is a few kilometers from the South African border. Both these golf clubs have fine credentials and this years Mohokare Classic should be an even bigger success than last years. A large field is once again expected with entries coming in from across Southern Africa, so local golfers are urged to enter as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Further details can be found on their advertisement on page 45.
Yet again the Mohokare Classic has attracted top notch sponsorship from the likes of Nedbank Lesotho, Maseru Sun and Lesotho Sun. Don’t miss out on the biggest golf tournament in the area, get your passport ready and book now!

It's major and money time on LPGA The Wegmans LPGA Championship is the start of a run of three major championships in the next four events. It is also a run of the four richest purses on tour. "It's probably almost half the money we play for (all season)," said Stacy Lewis, who won the year's ďŹ rst major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Lewis was joking, but she made a point. The Wegmans LPGA Championship ($2.5 million), U.S. Women's Open ($3.25 million), Evian Masters ($3.25 million) and Ricoh Women's British Open ($2.5 million) are being played in consecutive events. "It is pressure to play well," Lewis said. "If you are playing well, you can go out there and win a couple of tournaments, a couple of majors." And a big batch of money.

Water obstruksies soos stroompies, damme of riviere, 2. Mensgemaakte obstruksies soos sandkuile, 3. Natuurlike obstruksies soos digte plantegroei.

Dit staan bekend as ’n “sausage”.
’n Sandkuil met so ’n probleem moet dadelik reggestel word.

Swanepoel hunts down his second title as he wins at Arabella
C
hris Swanepoel cruised to his second Sunshine Tour victory when he won the R540,000 Vodacom Origins of Golf event at Arabella by three strokes last month. He carded a final round 68, his four-underpar finish taking him to 205, 11-under-par for the 54-hole tournament. He saw off the challenge of Christiaan Basson, who signed for a threeunder 69 in the final round, while Andrew Curlewis finished in third place thanks to his fine five-under-par 67. “I don’t normally like the Cape much,” joked Swanepoel afterwards, “but I quite like it now – especially after the weather held for all three days.” He built his victory around his first nine in the second round, which he played in an astonishing 29 strokes. “That sets you up for a win,” said Swanepoel, “or at least a top 10.” “It got a bit tight for me around the turn,” he said of the stretch from 10 to 14 where he made two bogeys, “but I just kept going and I managed to make some birdies when they were available to keep in front.” He finally put daylight between himself and his challengers when he birdied the 16th and was able to play the 18th with some comfort– leaving him the luxury of having a putt for eagle, and a tap-in for birdie to win the title in style. The win lifted Swanepoel’s position on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit to 28th, and with some weeks off before the next event on the Tour, he was looking forward to some rest and recreation: “The only thing I’m like to shoot next week is a kudu,” said the hunting enthusiast. 60

reopened on the 11th of June after 9 holes were closed for improvements for ten weeks,” said Mossel Bay Golf Club CEO, Bertu Nel. Improvements which, he said “were designed to enhance the links experience on a course where you can see the sea from every tee.” Ms. Holm said that choosing Mossel Bay as your winter holiday destination makes sense, too, because it offers so much to do. “In fact our motto is ‘Mossel Bay. Do Stuff ’ - and we really do deliver on that promise.” ‘Stuff,’ of course, can include anything from doing absolutely nothing on the beach, to riding in the mountains or jumping out of the sky - and Mossel Bay Tourism has developed a number of brochures and guides to help the visitor when it comes to making choices. “Mossel Bay is very family friendly, and this comes out clearly in our ‘Things To Do’ brochure - which is available for download on our web site (www.visitmosselbay.co.za) or from our tourism information office, on the corner of Church and Market Streets, in the CBD. “All in all, Mossel Bay has the weather, the attractions and the accommodation that makes it the ideal winter destination,” she said.

Daisies win 72 Hole Champs 26 May 2011
G
auteng North A (Daisies) picked up the Swiss Team Trophy for the second consecutive year when they won the WGSA 72 Hole Teams Championship played at Langebaan Golf Estate in the Boland. They had previously won this stroke play event when it was played on home turf in 2008 at Wingate Park and 2010 at Graceland in Mpumalanga.
Henriëtte Frylinck anchored the team with her scores counting in all four rounds 77, 68, 71, 72 to finish on level par 288 and was a worthy winner of the individual Governor’s Trophy. Team members Kim Williams and Nobuhle Dlamini each contributed two scores in this event in which two of the three scores count in each round. North West A’s team of Bertine Strauss, Nicole Becker and Bonita Bredenhann, winner’s in 2009 at East London, were runner-up, followed by Southern Cape A who counted out Mpumalanga A. The Southern Cape team included Sandra Winter, Iliska Verwey and Nicole Loesch. Iliska and Nicole returned to SA at the end of 2010, having studied at colleges in the USA. Following their promotion to the A Division last year, Mpumalanga’s Izel Pieters, Alana van Greuning and Rochelle Brooks did very well to finish tied third with Southern Cape. North West B gained promotion to the A Division when they picked up the Challenge Trophy by winning the B division. Suné du Plooy anchored the team with scores of 78, 77, 74, 78 (307) and young Mae Cornforth, playing in her first provincial tournament and experienced Elru Botha were the other two members of the team. Runners-up were Southern Cape B Maggie du Toit, Stephanie Perkins and Anezel Zylstra. In third position were Gauteng C’s Chevonne Botha, Larissa Ras and Simoné Burger. Henriëtte Frylinck (77) was one back from Bertine Strauss and Izel Pieters (76) after round one when gale force winds and rain made conditions extremely difficult and scores were high. However her fourunder 68 in round two put her ahead and she maintained her lead to win the individual event by five strokes on level par from Bertine Strauss +5 and Kim Williams +8. This was first WGSA event where no caddies were permitted (Langebaan policy) but the players never complained despite the difficult weather conditions, especially playing 36 holes in rain in rounds two and three. Congratulations to the Daisies on a fantastic week.
Gauteng North Mid Amateur Open and Closed The Gauteng North Mid Amateur Open and Closed was played on Sunday 22 May 2011 at the Irene Country Club. The results were as follow: Congratulations to Neil Homann from Central Gauteng who won on a count out with a score of (72,75) 147 after two rounds. The runner-up from Ekurhuleni was Rowan Du Preez (73,74, 147) with Greg Sheard (73,74, 147) from Boland in 3rd place. The Closed division was won by Leon de Lange (72,75, 147) from Akasia, runner-up Andre du Bruyn (76,73, 149) from Irene with Pieter Cooper (76,74, 150) from Wingate in 3rd place. The nett winner, in both the closed and open divisions, was Wayne Grace from Irene and Gary Pettit from Silver Lakes the nett runner-up also in both divisions. South African win historical Test Match
T
he first Mid Amateur Test Match between South Africa and Namibia ended in a comprehensive win for South Africa by 14 points to 4 last month. It was an historical occasion not so much for the win but for the fact that this was the start of exciting times for Mid Amateur golfers in South Africa.
“By providing players of 35 years of age or more the chance to play for their country should encourage our top amateurs to extend their competitive life, so to say, in the sport,” said Colin Burger, President of the South African Golf Association and also team manager for the winning test team. According to Burger this is the start of what the South African Golf Association hope will be an annual event on its calendar. The final day of the inaugural test match, over the Windhoek Country Club layout, was played in bitterly cold conditions created largely by the strong wind that prevailed. South Africa won all their games barring one betterball match in the morning and one singles match in the afternoon. Lyall McNeil and Gerry Coetzee went one down to Thomas Shitaleni and Gerhard van der Merwe and Hugo Delport was comprehensively beaten by Douw van Wyk, 6 and 5.
Jones completes wire-to-wire in SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play EAST LONDON (20 May 2011) – Veteran golfer Denis Jones carded a four-over-par 77 to put the finishing touches on a remarkable wire-to-wire victory in the South African Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship, at East London Golf Club. The 60-year-old local favourite won his mid-amateur debut with a comfortable two stroke win over Gauteng golfer Kevin Sharp with a winning score of four-over-par 296. Glendower’s Sharp carded a 78 to finish alone in second, one shot ahead of Jan Kemp Golf Club’s Josef Fourie, who shot a 75 and East London Golf Club’s John Kew, who carded a 76. “It hasn’t quite sunk in,” said a delighted Jones. “I just hope that the Super Seniors don’t demote me because of this.” Jones carded rounds of 68-71-80 and held a one shot lead over Sharp going into the final day. He turned in three-over, but held on to his edge until a double bogey at the stroke two, par-four 14th nearly derailed his tournament. But the resilient senior cut the damage to one shot with a superb birdie at the 472 meter par-five 15th. “I hit a good third shot into the green and nailed a 10-footer to put some space between Kevin and myself,” he said. “From there I just steadied the ship to the end.” “I’m absolutely thrilled, I tell you. I never gave myself a shot at winning this. I only entered for fun of it, you know, because the tournament was being played at my home course. “To win a mid-amateur at 60...it kind of gives one a new lease on life.”

Breaking down 'The Golf Boys' video It’s a little embarrassing. OK, it’s a lot embarrassing. Like watching a movie with your parents and having to endure a nude scene. It’s also a little catchy. No, it won’t be mistaken for “Stairway to Heaven” anytime soon, but worse music has not only been produced, it gets frequent airplay on top-40 radio stations... Most importantly, though, it’s different. If nothing else, “The Golf Boys” are breaking down stereotypes. Remember when professional golfers were thought of as boring guys in khakis? The “boy band” featuring Ben Crane, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan released a music video for their song “Oh Oh Oh” recently... And there was no khaki to be found. Crane wore the helmet and unitard he popularised in other viral videos; Fowler looked like a pseudo-rapper; Watson donned overalls and a healthy dose of chest hair; and Mahan was dressed as, well, a pimp. Love it or hate it, you’ve got to hand it to “The Golf Boys”: At least they’re not boring.

2011 report on golf in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice in EMA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).
T
he Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) incorporates Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, and was formed in 1981 with the objective of establishing political and economic unity among these countries.
With a total population of approximately 43 million and a GDP per annum estimated at just under US$1,000 billion, supported by some of the world’s largest oil and gas reserves, many consider the GCC as one of the world’s true emerging hotspots. The survey confirms that the GCC region still proves to be the highest performing region in all of Europe, the Middle East and Africa from a golf course revenue perspective. Local golf course operators have pointed out that demand for golf in the GCC continues to outstrip supply during the peak seasons and golf is starting to establish itself as a major pastime albeit mainly for the expatriate population. The key findings of the study include: • GCC countries are still the highest performers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in terms of average revenues achieved (over US$8.5 million) with, on average, over 30,000 rounds played at 18hole golf courses. Prices in the region are among the highest in the world, with annual dues averaging US$ 6,400 and peak-season green fees averaging US$179. • Only half of the total revenues are made up of membership and green fees while food and beverage facilities contribute significantly to the total golf course income. • Staff costs account for more than 40% of the total operating costs, due to the high staffing levels of facilities with an average of 150-200 full-time employees. • Only half of the participating golf courses reported a positive gross operating profit, recording an average GOP of US$2 million which equates to a 15% profit margin. • With several developments currently in place and with programs being introduced to encourage participation in the game, the future of golf in the GCC still provides plenty of space for growth. Golf in the GCC is still very much in its infancy. The game was traditionally played on sand-based courses, with Emirates Golf Club in Dubai opening the first grass course in 1987. Fuelled by a burgeoning economy, a growing number of expatriates working in the region and an increase in tourism, the rapid development of grass courses took off in the late eighties. 72

Currently there are 29 grass golf courses in the GCC region. The Emirate of Dubai is home to 10 courses and, with Yas Links and Saadiyat Beach as recent additions, the United Arab Emirates now has 18 courses in total. Along with Kuwait, Oman has two courses, and Bahrain and Qatar currently have one each, with the remaining five found in Saudi Arabia. While the region no longer sees the booming construction rate of the early to mid 2000s, there still appears to be plenty of space for growth in the region. Only in the last three years five new courses have opened and one of the world’s richest tournaments – the European Tour’s Dubai World Championship – has been successfully hosted twice. Developers especially have an appetite for high-quality facilities that incorporate residential and lifestyle real estate. Although several projects have been stalled or placed on hold and the residential product mix of some developments is still to be decided, there is no doubt that the golf courses in the region collectively provide a world-class golfing destination offering all year round playability. The economic downturn has presented the same challenges to the GCC golf industry that have been common across the globe over the past two to three years, with declining membership demand, consumer-driven pricing and an increased scrutiny of operational costs in an attempt to protect profit margins. However, people are continuing to enjoy playing golf and clubs are still offering an unrivalled level of service.

In order to create more spin on the ball, you should first move the ball a little further back in your stance and then set your wrists quite early and steeply during the takeaway. This will create a lot of ‘angle’ between your right wrist and the back of the right hand (for right handed golfers). This is called ‘hinging’ the club.
Once you have ‘hinged’ the club in the takeaway and created ‘the angle’- try to maintain (hold) the angle that you created through impact and into the follow-through. You will notice how this technique helps to create more spin and will feel as if the ball is staying on the clubface a fraction longer. This is what all good short game players are looking for!
Try not to take the club away with a straight right wrist.
Try not to scoop the ball or release the club (lose the angle) during the downswing and follow-through as this will limit your chances to spin and control the ball. Often this ‘scooping’ action will cause a thinned shot.
I am sure that if you practise the” hinge and hold” technique, you will soon be getting those difficult pitch shots close to the hole. If you have any trouble with this shot please consult with your local PGA Professional.

Hoekom gaan gholf agter uit? Minder mense speel gholf! (nee) So glo ek ! 76
Pro-shop toe, gholf balle, handskoen, skoene, ens(± R 1 000).

July/August 2011
Hierdie “game” kan jou mal maak, glo my! Groete

POSTURE
In this month’s tip we move onto yet another very important fundamental.... POSTURE! In the previous issues you learned how to grip, aim the club, align yourself and where the ball position should be, now you need to learn exactly HOW TO STAND.... This is known as POSTURE! Posture is so important because it impacts all the fundamentals you have already learned as well as how your SWING WILL LOOK AND WORK! The fact of the matter girls and boys is that there is no such thing as OK Posture but only GOOD or BAD POSTURE! Remember, if you have a GOOD GRIP and GOOD POSTURE you will almost certainly be a good striker of the golf ball. Good luck practicing and perfecting your posture! Remember, PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!

Born in 1935 in San Diego, California she attended Stanford University and played for its golf team, but left before graduation. She is quoted as saying "When I play my best golf, I feel as if I'm in a fog, standing back watching the earth in orbit with a golf club in my hands." She won tournaments on the LPGA Tour every year from 1956 to 1969. That 14-year winning streak is second-best in LPGA history, behind Kathy Whitworth's 17-year streak. Her final victory came in 1973, and her last LPGA Tour appearance was in 1980. Ben Hogan said that she had the best swing that he had ever seen. She is the only golfer in LPGA history to hold all four majors simultaneously, achieving this feat in 1962 after winning the final three majors of 1961. It has been said that she viewed golf as a form of self-expression rather than a contest between people. She is one of the most honored golfers in LPGA history. Before Annika Sorenstam's domination which began in 2001, she was the golfer most likely to be called the greatest player in women's golf history. Many still argue in her favour. Answer on page 96

Ashleigh Simon secures second professional victory
S
outh African Ashleigh Simon claimed the ISPS Handa Portugal Ladies Open by three shots after carding a brilliant five under par 67 in windy conditions at CampoReal Resort and Spa near Lisbon in May. The Johannesburg 22-year-old dislodged veteran Gwladys Nocera atop the leader board with eight birdies and three bogeys on a warm final day in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Simon took command after she went to the turn in three-under 33, to move four ahead of overnight leader Nocera. She carded two bogeys and four birdies coming home for a back nine total of two under 34 to finish on 16 under par overall. It was her second victory on the Iberian Peninsula, her only other victory coming at the 2007 Catalonia Ladies Masters in Spain, shortly after turning professional at the age of 18 almost exactly four years ago. Her best finish this season had been a tie for seventh at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco. “It’s a huge honour to win any Ladies European Tour event. I think that the climate is so close to South Africa so I felt comfortable. I didn’t know what score I was on so I was very focused. “It’s been four years since my last win and this one feels very special because I’ve been working for a long time. It shows that all the work is starting to pay off now and I hope it can continue.”

LAUGH OUT LOUD
Genie in a bottle A husband and wife were out enjoying a round of golf and about to tee off on the third hole which was lined by beautiful homes. The wife hit her shot and the ball began to slice. Her shot was headed directly at a very large picture window. Much to their surprise, the ball smashed through the window and shattered it into a million pieces. They felt compelled to see what damage was done and drove off to see what had happened. When they peeked inside the home, they could find no one there. The husband called out and no one answered. Upon further investigation, they saw a gentleman sitting on the couch with a turban on his head. The wife said, "Do you live here?"
