LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the Ed As I write this, I have several tabs open on my computer’s web browser. One of them is a Google Maps route starting from my home in Johannesburg and moving down through the Free State, into the Western Cape, then into the Winelands and finally the Garden Route – playing as many of the golf courses that I can along the way. The next tab is holiday rentals and self-catering accommodation. A few other tabs are pulled up with different golf courses. Another is of YouTube videos of things to do aside from golf. You can see what I am plotting...

Dear Shawn That sounds fantastic, I am sure that many of your mates are more than slightly jealous. You are going to play some of South Africa’s finest golf courses and undoubtably make many new friends. Please send us pictures and updates of your travels. Bon voyage. Regards

I am embarking on a road trip that some people use at one or another point in their lives to rejuvenate. I have literally no idea how it is going to go, who I am going to meet, what I will find, and so on. The slate is blank. I feel excited, a little apprehensive as I will be on my own but the part that pleases me most is that I am in no rush, this could be a two week or a two-month trip (depending on how it goes). Regards Shawn Smith

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

Seasons change, so should our

W

e trust that the information we have presented in our previous articles has assisted in cutting 2-4 shots off your total score thus far! Dependent on where you play in South Africa, you may experience a completely different course in the next few months, as courses may dry out, due to changing climate conditions. THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR: Tee shots will have longer roll outs due to dryer fairways and thinner landing areas, it is truly important to select the correct club off the tee, your tee shot may roll-out up to 30m longer, therefore it will be wise to make an informed club selection on those trickier holes where your drive may roll out to unfamiliar territories, for instance a slopy lie or, especially on holes that dog leg! There is no use in striking a great drive with your driver, down the middle of the fairway to finish up behind a shrub or tree or with a lie that you are practicing daily, forcing you to lay up after a good effort, because of a dogleg being right on your total driving distance – please consider image on the right for reference. Rather make use of a fairway metal, hybrid, or long iron dependent on the dogleg or slope on the fairway, to leave yourself in a prime position to attack the green. Another option is to adjust your starting line if

6

you want to use the driver. On the straighter holes, bomb the driver and take advantage of getting a shorter iron into the green! APPROACH SHOTS: Taking into consideration that courses may be dryer in the months to come, the areas around the green and green itself may firm up a bit, which

may make your shot selection different to the warmer rainier months. Choosing the correct club at approach could mean the difference between a birdie, par, bogey, or the dreaded double drop. Knowing that the ball would bounce out further than usual in dryer conditions, it might be of great use to you to take one or two less clubs and allow for some roll out, this all depends on - pin position, making the right decision would allow you, in most cases stay below the hole allowing for a good chance at having at ascending to the hole, which is favorable for a positive approach. CHIPPING & PITCHING: Knowing that you may have a thinner grassy area to chip or pitch off, of, it is important to prepare yourself well for the moment of truth – it would be wise to rehearse with a practice swing, allowing for interaction between the club and ground utilizing the bounce of the club, to do the work to make a good selection for flight and roll, a simple bump and run is much easier to control off of a dry lie. Be aware that with dryer landing conditions, the ball may bounce and roll out more than expected, knowing this will make your selection for landing areas and club selection easier. PUTTING: Speed on the greens will be affected in the months to come, a sure way to action better putting through your rounds is to pay attention to making good decisions regarding

your situation at hand, every situation you are dealt with through your round will be faster than expected, please read your putt carefully before making your selection for your intended pace, especially considering ascend or descend to the hole, know that the greens may be faster, assuring you make a good selection relative to the slope presented on the greens. Kindly take into consideration that the season affects how the ball reacts to bouncing and rolling on the surface, keeping this in mind can really assist you to your pursuit to your personal best in 2021! KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? Before you were born, Pards! 1985 Texas, 1991 SA. 2. What made you choose this career? Being a PGA Professional is really working in the hospitality business in the domain you love the most. I am a teacher, a psychologist, a club fitter, a rules expert, a babysitter, a motivator, a stockiest, a player (with a great future behind me) every day! 3. Has it always been golf for you? Before I was four, I also played with “matchbox” cars, climbed trees and got bounced off trampolines. For the last 60 years, it’s been mostly golf. 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? I generally peaked on a Wednesday. No, from the beginning, it was more about teaching the great game of golf to others. 5. You have been in the industry for a long time, who has been your biggest mentor? I am blessed to have had several mentors/ influencers in golf and like. All my professionals were gifted in different ways – I learned from all of them. Off the course, its often people I have met through golf who have helped to mould me into who I am.

Jeff Clause CEO/PGA Director of Golf St Francis Links

6. In 1991 you left the USA for a 3 year stint at Fancourt, how did this become 30 years ? What most people don’t remember, is that a month to the day, Fancourt went into provisional liquidation because their bank was Masterbond. Marina Martinique and Club Mykonos on the west coast failed, bringing down Masterbond and Fancourt with them. My 3-year plan became 7 at Fancourt as we kept the standards high, the course moved from No. 7 to No. 3 in that period. The liquidators became better golfers as well! 7. What are the biggest differences in the management of a Links Golf Course ? High standards remain high standards. However, St Francis Links is natural combined with nature – a great balance. We are maintaining the lie of the land and the natural terrain. Bunkers are a continuation of the dunes around us – scratched out. The result is a visual and a playable 4 hours and change. 8. Describe a typical workday for you at the club? My day has changed over the years. It still starts with golf, the day, the set-up, who’s playing and… It’s always a start with TK, my Head PGA Professional, it involves F&B and their interaction with the day and always includes time with Charl my SUP. Then I shift to Estate solutions for water, sewerage, Wi-Fi,

SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKETER

1. Where were you born and what schools did you attend? Emapangeni South Africa. Empangeni Prep, Felixton College, Grantliegh, Kearsney College. 2. Did you come from a sporting background? My father was an excellent road and cross country runner, both my brothers played football and cricket as well as completing Iron Man Triathalons. So I would say yes. 3. When did you realise that cricket was the sport you want to take further? Probably round 17/18 years old when my mates were applying for university and I was applying to UK clubs to go play cricket. 4. Who has been the most influential person in your cricket career and why? My family and in particular my father has been influential in getting me to where I am now, supporting every decision along the way. From a cricketing side Lance Klusener, he came into my career at a time

when I needed a kick up the butt which got me playing for South Africa. 5. With a lot of big achievements in your career like the 7 wickets on test debut, two IPL seasons, your match figures of 17/87 for Hampshire in 2019 (best first class match figures since1956) what keeps you motivated? Not going to an office job keeps me motivated hahahah! Seriously though... winning games and taking wickets, love the buzz! 6. You have recently been included in the Boland squad, what does your cricket schedule look like for the next season? The Garden Route + The 200 km stretch of coast which connects the Storms River Mouth to Mossel Bay is generally referred to as the Garden Route in reference to its fascinating diversity of wide sandy beaches, gorgeous lakes and lagoons, shaded evergreen forests and Protea-studded slopes. It is also home to some of the finest golf courses in the country. We have titled this Special Feature “The Garden Route +” because if you happen to start your journey in Port Elizabeth, then there are golf courses in-between that simply must be played and an overnight stop at St Francis Bay has virtually become de rigueur! With mild to warm summers and mild to cool winters it is the ideal region in which to play golf. George, a modern city with an airport that is connected to Cape Town and Johannesburg by regular scheduled flights, and has all the usual car rental agencies, is another main gateway to the Garden Route. Whichever way you look at it, this remains one of the ultimate South African golfing road trips…

T

he Garden Route on South Africa’s south-eastern coast is, undoubtedly, one of the most breathtaking regions in the country. Known for its lush, green forests surrounding the coastal towns that are artfully scattered along the coastline, and a plethora of indigenous fauna and flora, the sheer natural beauty of the region is unmistakable. It’s here where you’ll find the equally gorgeous and awe-inspiring Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa and it’s Championship Golf Course in the picturesque seaside town of Knysna. Whether you are a golf aficionado or not, you’ll be able to appreciate the stunning, Championship course at Pezula Golf Club. Hailed by many as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Western Cape, Pezula Championship Golf Course has also been named among the Top 20 South African Golf Courses for 2020 by Golfer’s Digest. The club celebrated their 20th anniversary last year, and while it is the in-your-face, jaw-dropping beauty of the Championship Course that first grabs your attention, the course is, so to speak, not just a pretty face. Elevated high on the Eastern Head of Knysna, the course offers challenging holes with strongly contoured greens and ample bunkers. Challenging, yet rewarding, the Pezula Championship course will be a dream to play for players of any level - even if it’s just to take in the magnificent views around you.

44

And while the golf course certainly contends to be a scene-stealer on the Pezula Estate, the equally gorgeous Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa shines brightly in its own right. The beautiful, all-suite hotel encompasses the beauty of the surrounding nature from every angle. From the lush, green gardens that surround the hotel, to the on-site nursery, Koi fish ponds and Kol Kol bath; Pezula perfectly orchestrates the harmonious marriage of nature and luxury. With an award-winning spa, Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa offers utter relaxation at its finest. Specially designed, Africa-inspired treatments will leave any person taking a turn at the spa in a complete state of tranquillity. Zachary’s Bistro, Pezula’s on-site, gourmet restaurant, specialises in creating mouthwatering dishes inspired by the area and prides itself on using only the freshest, local produce - some even grown in Pezula’s own nurseries. However, it’s not just the on-site activities that make a trip to Pezula oh-so-worth-it. Knysna and the surrounding towns are a hub of exciting activities, from fine dining hotspots (did someone say Knysna oysters?!) to enlightening cultural experiences and drop-dead gorgeous beaches - including the famed and mystical Noetzie Beach. In essence, Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa and the beautiful Pezula Championship Golf Course is not only a feast for the eyes but a place to rejuvenate, re-energise and excite the soul.

KNYSNA GOLF CLUB

All visitors play at R270 (green fee only) At around 6pm of January 13, 2010 a fire broke out in the water heating system of the Knysna Golf Club and, fanned by high winds, rapidly spread through the clubhouse. Thankfully there were no injuries, but the devastation was complete. The entire clubhouse and its contents (including trophies and memorabilia, pro shop stock and members golfing equipment) were destroyed within an hour. But a club comprises more than a physical building and its members wasted no time in taking action. The following morning, a disaster committee

was formed and immediately set to work on arranging temporary facilities. A Bedouin-style tent was erected with portable cabins serving as a green fees office, bar and refreshment stall. Members and visitors were able to play the course the day after the fire while the clubhouse was still smouldering. A few weeks later, a pre-fabricated temporary clubhouse was erected on the 1st tee and this served the club well for both golfing and social functions for the next year or so. Although the new clubhouse

had to be constructed using the ‘footprint’ of the previous building, the opportunity was taken to re-think and redesign its layout completely. The result has been a transformation that has delighted and impressed both members and visitors alike. The official opening took place on April 15, 2011 – just 15 months after the fire. The clubhouse is now one of the most stylish, modern and well-equipped in the country and stands testament to the dedication, imagination and sheer hard work of the club’s committee, members and contractors.

JOHN COLLIER 2021

FOURTEENTH ANNUAL

John Collier Survey A

ccording to Wikipedia, the Garden Route is a 300-kilometre stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa which extends from Witsand in the Western Cape to the border of Tsitsikamma Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here with an oceanic climate, mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. It has the mildest climate in South Africa and the second mildest climate in the world, after Hawaii, according to the Guinness Book of Records.

May | June 2021

With these favourable climatic conditions, it is not surprising that there are so many golfing facilities along this route. Recent research into good governance and environmental compliance into golf courses along the garden route indicate that the compliance levels for golf clubs in this area is above the national benchmark of 31%, and leading the way is the Kingswood Golf Estate achieving GOLD LEVEL status and a previous winner of the prestigious TOP CLUB AWARD in South Africa. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email ajcollier@telkomsa.net or visit the John Collier Website at www.johncolliergolf.com.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - T H E G A R D E N R O U T E + In designing the Oubaai Golf Club, an 18-hole championship golf course and driving range, Ernie Els and his team have taken full advantage of the spectacular landscape of the Western Cape. They had the support of Nicklaus Design as technical advisors. The Clubhouse has a dramatic location that overlooks the 16th, 17th and 18th greens. Open-air terraces offer panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the Gwaing River valley. The course itself has been sculpted in accordance with the landscape, ensuring that the surrounding environment is enhanced and not hindered. The Ernie Els golf design philosophy is based on flexibility. In addition, golf courses fairly display challenges and hazards while affording players the opportunity to use a full range of shots and plan strategically for individual holes. Links layout where veld grasses line the lush fairways. The course measures 6516m from the pro tee’s which is uniquely long for a Coastal course. Oubaai offers a wonderfully stimulating and enjoyable golfing experience. Oubaai Golf also offers a full service practice facility including driving range, and two practice putting greens. The golf practice facilities at Oubaai are among the best in the Garden Route and include a large driving range, putting green and short-game area, all complimentary with your round of golf.

At Oubaai this is the cornerstone of our belief. Home means something different to all, but a home should be a place that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. This is the underlying value that has created and grown Oubaai Golf Resort into the outstanding residential estate that it is today. Situated adjacent to Herolds Bay on the Garden Route, a mere 8 minutes from George Airport, this hidden gem is ideally located with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. Authentic is one of the first words that comes to mind when thinking about Oubaai, designed to blend in with the natural splendor of the Cape. The eco-friendly ethos has created a natural paradise – providing a haven to an array of wildlife. State of the art security systems offer complete peace of mind, enabling Oubaai residents to wander the expanse of the 546 hectare estate without a worry. The Ernie Els 18 hole Championship course is kept in mint condition and it is one of the most beautiful settings that can be seen anywhere in the golfing world. It was recently awarded 3rd best conditioned course in Southern Cape and 10th in South Africa. The layout of the course is a traditional links type layout where veld grasses line the manicured fairways. The course measures 6,516 meters from the pro tees, which is uniquely long for a coastal course.

With its course steeped in history and tradition, it boasts the unique claim of being the only course on the African continent to be rated in the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World by Golf Magazine USA, and in the Top 5 golf courses in South Africa by Golf Digest SA. When a little birdie recently announced that the Durban Country Club had been named the leading golf venue in South Africa by the website www.top100golfcourses. com (in association with TaylorMade) just a few weeks after being nominated for a 2021 World Golf AwardTM, General Manager of the Durban Country Club, Gerard Metzer, was thrilled: “We are constantly striving to offer above-par, premium facilities, and while we are certainly most well-known for our golf, don’t be fooled into thinking that golf is all that we offer! With our world-class sporting and leisure facilities, the Club is a fitness hub, social retreat and place of entertainment and relaxation for the whole family. What better way to celebrate the

70

RITCHIE FINDS HIS WAY BACK IN CAPE TOWN

A

fter what he described as a time of tears, the stress of losing his game and almost giving up golf, JC Ritchie was back in the winner’s circle again after beating Jacques Blaauw in a playoff for the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open at the Royal Cape GC. Ritchie finished regulation play tied with Blaauw for the lead on 14 under par. And then he maintained his perfect playoff record with a birdie on the first extra hole to win his second tournament on the European Challenge Tour and the eighth title of his Sunshine Tour career.

May | June 2021

“Something’s back. My game disappeared during Covid and I’ve been through hell with a lot of tears in the last year. It’s been a tough time and I’ve gone to some terrible places. With all the tears, practice and at times wanting to give up, this win just cancels out all the bad things that have happened since Covid. To be able to get myself back in this position and strong enough to win again is very satisfying,” said an emotional Ritchie. “I keep proving to myself that I’m good enough to play on the bigger tours. Hopefully I can get a few more wins now and jump onto the European Tour.”

arrick Higgo held off the challenge of in form Maximilian Kieffer to win his second European Tour title at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open. Kieffer - fresh off a play-off defeat last week in Austria - came home in 30 to sign for a 62 and pile on the pressure but Higgo kept his cool and registered another 63 to get 25 under and seal a three shot victory. MASTERS CHAMPION HIDEKI MATSUYAMA RECEIVES PRIME MINISTER'S AWARD IN JAPAN

A

extremely happy. I am very happy to receive the Prime Minister’s Award for winning the Masters,” said Matsuyama, who is the 34th individual recipient of the prestigious award.

In April the 29-year-old received the Prime Minister’s Award from Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga in Tokyo in recognition of him becoming the country’s first male major champion.

Prime Minister Suga praised Matsuyama for delivering a monumental victory which lifted the spirits of the Japanese people, some 10 years after the country was devastated by earthquake and tsunami.

s Hideki Matsuyama continues to bask in glory and accolades following an historic Masters Tournament triumph, the Japanese golf star keeps proving that his success is not just about himself.

His thoughts were immediately on the people of Japan. “Due to the influence of the coronavirus, both worldwide and across Japan, we are all living different lives, but even in these times, if this win can provide a sliver of hope to people, and inspire more kids, or even just one kid to want to try and play golf in the future, that makes me

The tragedy occurred in 2011 just weeks before Matsuyama was due to compete in his Masters debut. He was encouraged to play for the Japanese people and finished as leading amateur. He also witnessed Phil Mickelson slipping the green jacket on winner Charl Schwartzel in Butler Cabin, a privilege he enjoyed three weeks ago when Dustin Johnson did the honors for him.

Winter is a wonderful opportunity By: Sue de Zwart

W

inter is a wonderful opportunity to set your course up for a fantastic season ahead.

What a wonderful tool Ryder is. It protects the turf from heat & cold stress as well as increases the efficacy of fungicides in the tank mix. Many world renown professors warned us about this fantastic tool & it is unbelievable.

Greens :

Disease management: Autumn & early winter are your opportunity to set up your bermuda, paspalum & kikuyu for a fantastic season ahead.

As most soils are below 12 degrees Celsius you have minimum root uptake during this time. We have however seen benefits of regular spoon feeding as well as increased rooting with low rates of Qualibra – a wetting agent allowing water to move off the surface & holding 21 %

This is the time to clean up your soil borne diseases to prevent them getting progressively worse each year. Most of the Rhizoctonia diseases are spread by dead & live matter. It is imperative to get your systemic fungicide like Headway Maxx down prior to doing spring & autumn treatment. Fairways - Large Patch

more moisture in the rootzone.

Greens - Brown Ring Patch

Hand removal of poa & moss is always advisable to avoid this spreading. Check your irrigation & maintain each sprinkler. I personally prefer a 360 sprinkler on the greens & half circles on the greens surrounds. Check the greens drainage points – ensure your greens are all freely draining – even when the dam levels rise in summer. Add in sump pumps where greens will in fact be draining under water.

Irrigation:

Pigments: Before Ryder

After Ryder

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK is the Golfer from the past?

WHO

• • • • • •

Our mystery golfer was born in Massachusetts on Nov 28, 1906 and passed away on April 30th, 1997. He learned to play golf while caddying at the Plymouth Country Club. Already a talented player by his early 20s, he came to prominence after coaching from Alex Morrison. He won two majors: The Masters in 1938 and the PGA Championship in 1939. He helped a struggling Ben Hogan with his game in the late 1930s, advising him to weaken his grip. He also assisted future LPGA hall of famer Beth Daniel in her teens. He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in April 2006 and inducted in that October. Answer on page 98
