WINNING LETTER To the Editor I have read recently about the number of players that are leaving the game of golf and it is often said that the time needed skill level required to play the game can be off putting, I feel that it is more about the traditions of the game and what constitutes acceptable behaviour. As far as I’m concerned what is disturbing is the number of ardent golfers leaving the game because they have to put up with the behaviour of “beginners” who arrogantly play the game with an “I paid my money now leave me alone” attitude. Slops and shorts? No problem. Twenty minutes late for your tee time - your problem, get me out. Took three hours to play the front nine? So what! Failed to repair your divots, what’s the big deal? In my opinion the game better start addressing the twenty percent of the golf population who are currently playing not only eighty percent of the rounds, but are also spending on equipment, food, clothing, and housing. In a few years, ten percent of the golf population will be playing ninety per cent of the rounds, and that’s a good thing. We ought to follow the European model of having Golf Professionals qualify new golfers in order to let them on the course, and who have the power to remove their “qualifying card” for gross breaches of etiquette, poor care of the golf course (not raking bunkers, not fixing ball marks, not fixing divots, and most of all slow play)! Then

the game can start attracting suitable people and the rest can take up alternative sports that tolerate bad behaviour from their participants! Regards Trevor Becker

Thank you for writing in, I feel that there has been a decrease in the standards of social behaviour on and off the golf course. As we all know golf is a game that should bring the best out in people. Regrettably, today, that is just not the reality. It should be a game of honour and politeness towards other golfers. However, I think we must bear in mind that golf courses in today’s economic climate are under immense pressure. They are walking a tight rope between attracting new members with new attitudes and retaining the stalwarts of the game. Your idea of adopting a “qualifying system” is not without merit. Regards

Under its new “Valuing the PGA Professional” initiative, the PGA is sharing international best practice with golf clubs about a process they believe will help clubs to create golfers, add members, retain golfers and create a bigger community spirit within the industry. “The programme has been very successful in America. In their research there they found that only half the members of a golf club knew the name of their PGA professional, and only about 14% had ever had a golf lesson.

“What the PGA of America has seen is that members who are in a coaching programme with their local PGA professional are 100% more likely to remain members of the golf club than those who aren’t. And rounds of golf at these clubs increased by 20%.

Since November last year, the PGA has been providing its member professionals with best practices that drive more participation in the game, including various new initiatives which they will be implementing at golf clubs across South Africa.

“So it is quite obvious that there is a greater role that a club’s PGA professional can play, and greater scope for growth at golf clubs in this area.”

“Our aim is to help South African golf clubs realise where their true value lies, namely in their members and in their local PGA professional. Golf clubs need to realise that their biggest asset is their members

ordan Spieth had an incredible 2015, winning 2 major championships, the FedEx Cup and 3 other PGA Tour wins. He was Player of the Year, leading money winner, had the lowest stroke average and reached world number 1. Spiethâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tenacity, resilience and hunger are exceptional, but immeasurable. A look at his performance statistics for the 2015 season make for astonishing reading and provides much for the average amateur or aspiring professional to learn. With an average driving distance of 266m and a fairways hit percentage of 62%, Spieth was ranked 78th and 80th on the PGA Tour respectively in these categories.

Our expectations of his performance, or any professionalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance in this category is largely disproportionate to reality. We may believe they regularly bomb it out to the 300m mark and never miss a fairway but the numbers portray an entirely different picture. While averaging 9 fairways a round is certainly respectable, he is still missing nearly 40%. With an average of 67% greens in regulation he finds himself ranked 49th , again a respectable statistics but indicates that he is missing 33% or 6 greens per a round and barely breaks into the top 50 on the PGA Tour in this category.

tuition & instruction Looking at his proximity to the hole still does not meet the high expectations amateurs have, he averages 33ft with all clubs and 19ft using his wedges from 100 to 125 yards, he is ranked 26th and 60th in these categories respectively.

It is a common error for us to assume that a professional will hit his wedge shots to 6ft on a regular basis, this is certainly not the case, a combination of intelligent course strategy and human error lead to these higher than expected numbers.

27.8, he further holds the number one spot with putts made from 10 – 15ft with almost a 3rd of putts made from this range. He is ranked 11th in avoiding 3 putts from outside 25ft, a great indication that while we want to hole putts, it’s vital to avoid 3 putting. He is also head and shoulders above the rest in 1 putts per round, 1 putting on 44% of the greens he hits in regulation.

These astonishing figures highlight the overwhelming power of a great short game and in particular being a great putter, which is a combination of making putts and avoiding 3 putts. A solid short-game allows players to score incredibly well when striking the ball great, it also allows players to save par regularly to keep momentum going when their ball striking is not at its best.

So how did Jordan Spieth managed to surpass 50 million dollars in earnings and dominate the PGA Tour in 2015 when more than 50 of his fellow players are beating him in almost all these categories. The answer is a simple one, short game! He is missing 6 greens per round but averaging 4 out of 6 saves when missing the green, this 66% average ranks him 4th. His proximity to the hole from the fringe is 1.8ft, an incredible statistics that easily puts him 1st in the world in this category. He is ranked 2nd in proximity to the hole from anywhere around the green with an average of 6ft and is unchallenged on the top of the rankings with a putts per round average of

There is no better illustration of this than comparing Henrik Stenson’s 2015 season to Spieth’s. Stenson obliterated the field with his ball striking in all categories throughout the year, finding himself ranked 1st with an average of over 70% greens in regulation and 1st in total driving, making him the stand out ball striker in the world, yet was unable to lift a single trophy in the 2015 season and could not touch Jordan Spieth for dough.

Parkview Golf Club unveils statue of Bobby Locke

he memory of South Africa’s iconic golfer, Bobby Locke, is now enshrined proudly and permanently at Parkview Golf Club. A bronze statue of the former Parkview player who, on four occasions, won The Open Championship was unveiled at the weekend by former SA Open winner and well-known golf commentator, Denis Hutchinson. Locke stands doffing his cap to the clubhouse.

Guest of honour at the function, another former golf champion and now commentator, Dale Hayes, said: “For many years, Locke simply was the best golfer in the world. It’s easy for today’s sports fans to forget that. So it’s only right that there should be a statue in his honour and it’s appropriate that it should be at Parkview, Locke’s home club for many years.” Parkview Golf Club President, Colin Robinson, said: “The statue stands not only as a permanent homage to one of golf’s greatest exponents but as confirmation of Parkview’s commitment and historical attachment to golfing achievements. Locke portrayed a spirit of excellence, which he imparted both to the game and to this club. “As we begin our second century,

Parkview golf club is thriving. The course is in excellent condition. And as we salute the excellence that Bobby brought to golf, we pay tribute to all the Parkview golfers who, through the years, have made a similar outstanding contribution to Parkview’s proud reputation.” The unveiling, attended by dignitaries and club members, was the first of several events the club is planning this year in celebration of its centenary. Its official birthday is July 1. Arthur D’Arcy Locke, who was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977, won both the SA Amateur and the SA Open at Parkview in 1935 and played at the club until his passing in 1987. He was the first South African to win a major golf event, and the first to defeat the best golfers in the world, both in Europe and the United States. The statue was sculpted by the established South African sculptor, Heidi Hadaway, at her studio in Northcliff, Johannesburg. Working from photographs of Locke, and with guidance from Parkview members who had known him, Heidi created original artwork in clay before it was cast in bronze at a foundry in the Cape.

I really want to thank SAGA and GolfRSA for giving us this tournament and the chance to compete against top class international players. “We are really grateful to Mr Rupert for his huge contribution to the National Squad and for opening up Leopard Creek to us. It was an unbelievable experience to play in a field of this calibre at a championship course like Leopard Creek.” Meanwhile Scotland swept to victory in the African Amateur Team Competition. McDonald anchored the side with a sweet 66, Connor Syme added 70 and Grant Forrest 71 for a superb final round 207 to defeat RSA Seniors and France by eight strokes on 639.

outh Africa’s Albert Venter swept to a five stroke victory in the inaugural African Amateur Stroke Play Championship in February thanks in no small part to two superb 65s at the Leopard Creek GC The 19-year-old stunned with seven birdies on the back nine in the first round to lead England’s Jamie Bower by six strokes with his first 65. He had to share pole position with Bower, Scotland’s Jamie Savage and fellow South Africans Kyle McClatchie and Jason Rossiter after a second round 73, but a flawless performance for 65 in the third round pushed Venter clear of the chasing pack. The Centurion player was three strokes ahead of Bower, who recently won the Gauteng North Open, at the start of the final round, while Savage and Rossiter lurked five off the pace and Scottish pair Jack McDonald and Craig Ross a further stroke back. Venter triumphed on 16-under-par 274 and the fact that he limped home with a hat-trick of bogeys at the closing holes barely diminished his delight at the international breakthrough. The 2014 Eastern Province Stroke Play champion was over the moon with his international coup. “This is a huge win for me,” he said. “There were international champions and the top golfers from more than 10 countries in the field this week and to beat them is a huge deal for me. “I saw that you could hit a lot of wedges or short irons

WP wins titanic battle to take Provincial Challenge hat-trick

estern Province proved yet again that golf is played on grass, not paper, as the four bankers and 17-year-old rookie Ignation Douries sealed a hat-trick of victories in the South African Disabled Golf Association’s Hollard Provincial Challenge, at Zwartkop CC last month. Over 36 holes of rousing shot-making and spirited competition, Western Province rallied to triumph on 11.5 points, defeating defending champions Rest of Country (ROC) by two points, while Gauteng finished a close third on nine points. There were lots of doubting Thomas’s who didn’t believe that Douries would keep pace with deaf player Ryan Lotz and the experienced leg-amputees Morne Cronje, Riaan Spreeth and Trevor Reich. But in face of speculation, the Citrusdal teenager underlined his selection and proved that the will to win is often enough. Douries collected two points for Western Province in the first round and surprised with unexpected determination and grit at the closing hole in the final round. Standing on the 18th tee, Douries was 1-down to Virgil Foster from Gauteng and all square with Nico Wentzel from

ROC after the former Nedbank SA Disabled Open champion won the 17th hole. “It was very, very tight at the end, but Ignation handled the pressure like a real pro,” said proud Province skipper Pieter Verwey. “We had 10 points in hand, but ROC was on 9.5 points and Gauteng had 8.5 points. Ignation had to halve against Virgil and beat Nico to win the Provincial Challenge for us. “It was touch and go, but Ignation he was like a little terrier that just wouldn’t let go. He lagged his first putt three feet short of the hole and he boxed the second putt with total confidence to halve against Virgil and to beat Nico. Douries and Lotz both collected three points for Province, Spreeth amassed two points and Cronje won the Most Valuable Player honour for the champions with 3.5 points. “Trevor didn’t contribute any points this year, but the team awarded him a gold star for inspiring everyone else to greatness,” said Verwey. “Of course that means he pays for all the celebratory drinks and all the Fanta Ignation wants.”

Triple delight at Border Championship

he recent Border Championship at East London GC served up a feast of celebrations for Azelia Meichtry from Switzerland, local favourite Demi Flanagan and Gauteng junior Ivanna Samu. Meichtry claimed her third title this season in the Stroke Play Championship and Samu regained the number one spot in the Womens Golf South Africa Senior Rankings on Sunday, while Flanagan recorded an unprecedented fourth Match Play victory on Tuesday. Just a week after Meichtry emulated former WGSA number one Nobuhle Dlamini to capture both the Stroke Play and Match Play Championships at Port Elizabeth GC the KeNako Academy golfer was in ascendancy again. Meichtry opened with an expensive seven over 80 at East London GC She lagged eight shots behind first round pace-

setter and defending champion Zethu Myeki, but the 19-year Sierre golfer showed the class that has carried her to the winner’s circle five times on the local circuit.

Meichtry dipped two shots under par in round two and fired a seven under 66 in the final round to win by two strokes on two under 217. Samu carded rounds of 76, 71 and 72 to take second and the runner-up finish helped the 17-year-old old to retake the number one spot she surrendered to Kaleigh Telfer late last year. (Telfer missed the Border Championship to compete in the Annika Invitational at the Reunion Resort in the United States, where she finished 40th in a field of 70 top ranked international competitors). Flanagan further denied the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation a podium finish in the Match Play Championship when she defeated Myeki 1-up to win the prestigious trophy a fourth successive time.

Beckley banks Sanlam Cape Province Open title

ig-hitting Aubrey Beckley from North West closed out an emphatic five stroke victory in the Sanlam Cape Province Open last month.

The Potchefstroom golfer denied defending champion James du Preez repeat success in the 72-hole curtain-raiser when he fired a blistering third round 64 and a flawless final round 65 at Kingswood GE to triumph on 20-under-par 268. Gauteng North’s Du Preez returned a third round 66 and carded 64 in the final round to take second, while 36-hole leader Herman Loubser from Boland settled in third on 274 with rounds of 67 and 71. “My putter was pretty cold in the first few events this season, so my coach Emile Steinmann and I worked on a couple of things to improve my rhythm and stroke,” said Beckley. “The putts started dropping this week and I was striking the ball really well, too. I made a good start and I felt that I could challenge. My game plan for the last

two rounds at Kingswood was to target the par fives and the shorter par fours on the front nine. “The back nine is tough and you have to treat it with respect, so I took a more conservative approach and it paid off. I managed to give myself a decent cushion going into the last nine holes and I kept it going.

Jason Bohn suffers heart attack during Honda Classic

“He is scheduled to have more tests this weekend,” Justin Richmond said.

American two-time PGA Tour winner Jason Bohn has suffered a heart attack at the age of 42 during the Honda Classic in Florida.

“We know he appreciates the concern from so many people in the PGA Tour family who have reached out.”

Bohn, ranked world number 71, had chest pains following the second round and called for a medic.

The PGA Tour statement added Bohn’s wife was at “home in Atlanta but his in-laws joined him at the hospital, as did fellow player George McNeill, who said Bohn was in good spirits”.

in the Arizona Desert

n early June 2005 my brother Brendon and I touched down in Phoenix , Arizona to take up residence on The Gateway Tour for the Summer. It was hot, dusty and at times uncomfortable as the temperatures were regularly in the forties. The upsides far outweighed any weather woes though, as we were living in America - Scottsdale at that, as player and caddie/sports psych for the Summer. My sponsor had lined up an amazing rental apartment just a stones throw from TPC Scottsdale, which

later became my home course by complete fluke and fortune, but I’ll get back to that later. The Gateway Tour was one of the most successful mini-tours in the U.S at the time, attracting fields exceeding one hundred players each and every week. When you calculate each of these players paying USD$1,200 into ‘the pot’, our purses were paying out a $20,000 (plus) winners’ cheque each event. Finishing behind the winner, around 30% of the field made the cut and last place of that group walked away with around $800. To put the competitive-

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - U ps & downs: L ife on the S unshine Tour ness of this tour into perspective; In a 54-hole event at Gainey Ranch midway through the season, I shot 14 Under Par to finish in a tie for 17th. Making money was not going to come easy and I learned this the hard way! Now that the backdrop has been set, I will let you in on a short, event-filled story surrounding my first ever tournament as a professional golfer in the Arizona desert... Shortly after landing in Los Angeles, we checked into a $29 motel near a block of flats which would have been a perfect fit for Training Day’s final shoot-out scene. I’m pretty sure that Denzel would not have stayed in our motel during filming but looking back now, the Free 40 minute airport transfers were probably worth more than $14,50 each anyway. Night one in America was spent at a southern fried chicken diner, surrounded by members of the infamous LA Street gangs, no doubt carbo-loading for the long night ahead. For two Zimbo kids who had grown up glued to all the crime TV shows that DSTV had to offer; This. Was. Epic. Once we had finished eating, thrown away our paper plates and fist-bumped our bandanna wearing waiter, we walked out of what had felt like a movie set and headed back to our shady motel for thirty minutes of free wifi in the reception before bed. On to Phoenix the following day and I have to say, that whenever I see that C.I show ‘the first 48’, I think of my brother and I over those first two nights in America. Still deep in conspiracy-filled conversation about all the gangsters, drug dealers and assassins we had seen in LA the previous night, we had no idea what lay in store for us in the East of Phoenix. Little to our knowledge, ‘East Phoenix’ is to put it mildly, a rough area. The flight landed late, Scottsdale was an hour away and so we made an executive decision to stay near the airport, (located in the heart of East Phoenix) in another $29 room - Before I go any further, our only knowledge of Phoenix and Scottsdale was what we had seen, watching the PGA Tour coverage of the tournament each year - The shuttle pulls up to the hotel, which was exactly what you would expect a $29/night motel to look like. We had no cash and so we dropped our bags and then obliviously walked into town in search of an

ATM, at dusk, passports and wallets in hand, unarmed. Less than a block from the motel’s inflatable pool we were approached by a tipsy homeless man in dire need of help; “Hey guys, wanna buy my pants?” (this is a true story and for the record he was wearing a pair and selling another).. “Sorry guy, we have no cash and so we will see you on the way back if that’s okay..” *Look at each other in disbelief before returning to our mission of ATM, food, motel, sleep* Two hours later, walking back from the nearest Hooters through the back streets of East Phoenix, still unarmed, we noticed a lot of commotion near the bridge overlooking our motel before noticing the yellow crime-scene tape. Without going into more detail than necessary, our homeless friend had approached a car under the bridge, in what I can only assume was another attempt to sell his pants and caught the driver unaware, who then shot him. I can still clearly see the shocked look on my brothers’ face as his first 48 hours in America ticked down. At the end of our very own episode of ‘the first 48’ we checked into our apartment, unpacked and got our bearings around the local grocery store. We then began plotting the next few days leading up to my professional tournament debut. Practice rounds, buckets of balls at the driving range and time around the short game area were only interrupted by fifteen minute Arnold Palmer Ice-Tea breaks during that week. On the evening before Round One there was no doubt in our

An Arizona desert sunrise is hard to beat and once the pre-game routine was complete we headed for the First Tee-Box. “On the tee, from Harare Zimbabwe..... Ryan. Cairns...” The moment was finally here and other than my heart not getting the memo to be calm and collected today, I was ready. The standard fifty seconds to gather myself, complete any swing and mental rituals before striking my first ever tee shot as a pro had begun. With one final (nervous) glance at my target, I returned my eyes to the ball, started my swing and then watched it sail down the fairway of that opening Par Five. A four iron approach later and we were in a green-side bunker assessing the slopes of the green as we’d both seen the Pro’s do on TV so many times over the years. The bunker shot left me with about four feet for Birdie, which Brendon and I again stalked intensely. To any casual spectator or green-keeper driving by, it must have looked like we knew what we were doing. The putt was on line and fell in just as planned for a welcome Birdie on our first hole of our first ever Professional Golf Tournament. This was easy! ... However, seventeen holes later the Game of Golf left us with the exact opposite feeling. I’d managed to shoot 87, even after that opening Birdie. It was a catastrophe. The next day we went out with a fighting spirit, which despite my fair share of disappointing rounds of golf over the last eleven years as a Pro, I still manage to possess somehow. That fight eventually ended and I shot 79 to finish twenty-two over par, miss the cut by miles and feel like a complete failure.

That evening, Brendon and I sat in the living room running through the chain of events, trying to make sense of it all with no luck. Eventually we got up, hugged it out and agreed that we’ll do better next week. At the time I only said that to give him some hope, as those two days really left me feeling defeated and hollow. Maybe I just wasn’t good enough to be a pro? I slept it off and spent the next few days practicing for tournament number two of a Fourteen Tournament Schedule, all of which had been paid for in advance by my sponsor Rob Bailey back in South Africa. This could be a long and very embarrassing Summer! “On the tee from Harare, Zimbabwe... Ryan. Cairns...” - By the time I heard the starter announce my name on the tee this week, I had gathered my thoughts, convinced myself that I am good enough and spent a lot of time around the greens at McCormick Ranch Country Club in preparation. It showed too as I found bounced back with rounds of 70-72 to make the cut. My first cut made and a twenty-four shot improvement from the embarrassment a few short days before. My pay cheque that week was handed out at the local diner, where Gateway Tour members received 15% off on Friday nights. It amounted to $901.60 and sent me on the journey which I still find myself on now. It’s been eleven years since then and I’m closing in on two hundred and fifty professional tournaments played across dozens of countries on each of the world’s seven continents. Some of the more recent tournaments have taken me to places like Mauritius, Peru and Australia. I’ve had tournament winnings of R150,000 in a week but I’ve also had many weeks pay out R0,00 after missing a cut. I’ve sold my car on two occasions (to date) in order to fund my next few weeks or months on the road. My CV of jobs before and even during my time as a professional golfer have included warehouse packing, waiting tables,

picking up range-balls and pub-singer to name a few. At the end of it all, the highs are high and the lows are low. That’s life, and that’s golf. That first Summer as a Professional Golfer living in Arizona resulted in eight cuts made and six misses. It also saw me shoot 63 to win a Monday Qualifier on the Web.Com Tour and play alongside Bubba Watson, Camillo Villegas and Brendon De Jonge amongst others. As promised in the beginning of this story, this is where the “fluke and fortune” of Member Rights at TPC Scottsdale winds back around. ‘TPC’ stands for Tournament Players Club, and so only PGA Tour and Web.Com Tour players are permitted to use the facilities at the bottom end of the range. To guys like me, it was the holy grail. To make things worse, I lived across the street and so the perfectly manicured grass and brand new ProV1 practice balls were in plain sight every day, taunting me. The regulars were Geoff Ogilvy, Aaron Baddely, JB Holmes and the list went on.. After shooting that 63 to win the Monday Qualifier for the Gila River Classic on the Web.Com Tour, I collected my players badge for the week and drove straight to the TPC of Scottsdale. The tournament was being played at another course near Phoenix, but this was my moment and I was not going to blow it... Upon arrival I walked

into the Pro Shop and introduced myself to every staff member individually, making a point to remember their names. I then went outside to the bag-room and cart sheds to do the same before collecting my bag of brand new ProV1 range balls and join Ogilvy and the boys out on the range. The Web.Com tournament week ended and as a result, so too would my short-lived TPC member experience (had I not made a point to introduce myself to every single employee at the TPC of Scottsdale that day)... Having done that whilst flashing my Web.Com Tour players badge (even though it was only for one event), every member of staff at the TPC simply assumed that I was a full-time member of the Web.Com Tour. Needless to say I never corrected them and as a result, I spent the next twelve months as a ‘Tour Member’ at the Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale. I guess that sometimes you have to walk the rough streets of downtown LA and East Phoenix before being able to hit those ProV1 practice balls off the perfectly manicured grass in the Arizona sunshine. The South Coast Swing F

or this edition we spent an unforgettable week visiting the golf courses on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. This is an area that offers so much and yet is extremely affordable. Over the next 12 pages we have endeavoured to offer you a cross section of what the KZN South Coast has to offer from a golfing point of view. Our cover picture features the Selborne Park Golf Estate and this beautiful 18-hole, Par 72 course which has water features at most holes and stunning sea views from 11 of the 18 holes is the epitome of what this area has to offer. Designed by Denis Barker, the man who established Selborne, the golf course is renowned as a great test of golf and regularly hosts Sunshine Tour events. A world-class driving range adjoins the property, alongside Africa’s biggest putting green with their resident Pro always on hand.

Although difficult to single out a signature hole, the par 5 third challenges you to really climb into your drive with trouble on the left, but some forgiveness right. Described by Dale Hayes as “A hole not for the faint-hearted”, the second has been likened to hitting into a funnel with natural bush on the right and “out of bounds” on the left. For the low handicapper who hits a very long ball, taking on the green is full of reward but the risk left and back of the green looms in the form of a stunning natural water feature. Set amidst an eco-estate, golfers are sure to spot some of the resident wildlife that graze around the course’s manicured fairways, costal forest and lush, natural bush. The subtropical climate provides a fantastic all-year-round golf experience, and the luxury villas offer visitors an unforgettable seaside holiday experience. The estate’s private beach club offers resident visitors a tranquil and private facility with unlimited beach access away from the hubbub of the public facility. Selborne Park Golf Club also caters for a variety of functions. Choose from an elegant 20-seater conference room or the Old Halfway House for larger functions. The Old Halfway House is a beautiful thatched venue with stunning views of the course and sea accommodating up to 80 people.

Q & A’s with Fred Beaver - Wild Coast Sun stalwart

• You have been the Director of Golf at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club for many years now, take us back in time and tell us how it all started. I have been at Wild Coast for 34 years now. I started with Holiday Inns at Royal Swazi in March 1980 and moved to Wild Coast in September 1982. • You have hosted numerous “stars” over the years, does anybody stand out in particular and if so why? Well, Seve Ballesteros played in the first ever Pro event sponsored by Pan Am but I have hosted many top players – Faldo, Price, Ernie, Strange, Langer, Couples – Seve had such amazing charisma. Bernard Langer, Nick Price & Ernie Els are all incredible individuals on and off the course. Mark McNulty also stands out; he has always played the course well and is a wonderful supporter of the Wild Coast. He is also an honoury life member - the ultimate professional. • Has the course changed much over the years? When the greens were re-grassed, Matko (Peter Matkovich) redesigned the 1st fairway and 12th green (minor subtle changes). • What makes the Wild Coast Sun special? Wild Coast is an incredible lay out. Robert TrentJones (Jnr) made the most of all the natural features and we have three feature holes No6, No12 & No13. The elements can change the course daily creating challenges at all times – club selection from the tee being of utmost importance. • What is your favourite memory of your time at the Wild Coast Sun? I have many wonderful memories – having great General Managers (Alberto Chiaranda, Melville Vogel, Alec McMath & Myan Moodley) to work with,

making my challenges a lot easier. It’s wonderful to have support and understanding of the golfing experience. Pro events are always special – the preparation, build up, operations during the event and obviously celebrating the success over a few cold ones. Our annual Founders event has been very special, with an incredible group of people that enjoy the concept and the tradition of the event. Working with Charles Fiddian Green, Nigel Matthews & John Cheshire has been great. • The KZN South Coast offers some of the best golf courses in South Africa, what needs to be done to attract more golfers to the area? The lower South Coast is certainly the best value for money golfing destination in the country, perhaps more marketing needs to be done by tourism. I think the clubs continue to be very proactive promoting the South Coast. I am very optimistic that the South Coast in time will grow in numbers of golfers and the courses will continue to get better. It is a pity that there is not more to attract the younger overseas visitors, the majority of overseas visitors at the moment are elderly, either retired or semi-retired – additionally, quality restaurants would help. • What are your plans for the future? At some stage retire, enjoy a bit of golf, fishing and consuming that wonderful brown ale. • Do you have a humorous story or two concerning the pro’s that have played there that you can share with the readers? Obviously over the years there have been many humorous events going back to Vin Baker and his mischievous antics and Hennie Otto’s dispatching of his equipment that was not working too well at the time – working with Zoom Zoom our cart mechanic for many years was a laugh a minute.

World Club ProAm Scores 3rd Victory

week of golf celebration at every level was celebrated in KwaZulu-Natal as PGA Professionals and their amateurs battled it out for the prestigious title and trophy in the 3rd annual PGA of South Africa World Club Pro Am. Chief Executive of the PGA of SA, Ivano Ficalbi, addressed the golfers at the Closing Awards ceremony saying that the World Club ProAm is a bucket-list opportunity for networking and global friendships and thanked the teams for their endorsement and participation in 2016.

Keynote speaker, the HOD at the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mr Desmond Golding, said, “Golf has a fundamental economic benefit for KwaZulu-Natal, that ticks our box of indicators for growth, and we will continue to support this sporting category through this incredible event. We have seen the economic impact on our community when an event of

this international stature takes place.” The PGA Professionals battled it out over 90-holes across four championship courses Zimbali Country Club, Cotswold Downs Golf Estate, Prince’s Grant Golf Estate and the final two rounds at Durban Country Club. Burmester cleans up in Sunshine Tour awards

ean Burmester walked away with the lion’s share of the awards last night in the Sunshine Tour Players Awards as he pocketed four of the seven honours up for grabs. The 27-year-old from Bloemfontein won four tournaments on the Sunshine Tour during the 2015 season, and he added to his celebrations at the awards evening with the news that he had moved into the top 100 players in the world according to the Official World Golf Ranking.

He took the Gary Player Trophy for the best stroke average of the 2015 season (69.34 over 59 rounds of tournament golf ), the Media’s Player of the Year as voted by members of South Africa’s golf journalists, the Players’ Player of the Year which is an accolade from his fellow professionals, and the Commissioner’s Award, which is given by Selwyn

Sun City’s new golf manager is on the ball

uintin Byleveldt is certainly a man for a challenge. The 27-year-old PGA of South Africa professional took over as the Golf Operations Manager at Sun City only a few months before the 2015 Nedbank Golf Challenge, and at the same time his wife was due to give birth. “It was quite a big step up for me. In six months I’ve already been involved with four Sunshine Tour events and a major tournament such as the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Then there’s been the task of working with international guests and different languages. But it’s been fantastic,” says Byleveldt, who is relishing the opportunity of managing two world-class golf courses at one of the most iconic of South African tourist venues. Byleveldt is not oblivious to the challenge facing him as the man tasked with keeping the Gary Player

Country Club and Lost City Golf Course at the fivestar level golfers expect them to be. “We’ve got two golf courses to run, and the maintenance that goes into that is a big job. You cannot skip a maintenance meeting or a walkabout where you’re looking at standards. That’s a daily job. We want to keep our standards at a five-star level because every day we see how people from all over the world still want to tick off the Gary Player Country Club in terms of their golf bucket list.” Then there is also the not-so-small task of fulfilling his other role as a new dad. “My wife and I had a baby boy in January and he’s keeping us awake. But we’re really enjoying Sun City and would like to stay on as long as possible. There are a lot of young families here and it’s actually a great place to raise a child before school starts.”

He was born in Haworth, Oklahoma U.S.A. on March 31st 1916 and passed away on August 30th 2008 in Cherokee Village, Arkansas. He served in the United States Army during World War II and turned professional in 1946. He worked as a caddie and club professional in Shreveport, Louisiana. He only joined the PGA Tour when he was in his thirties, but he went on to win fifteen PGA Tour titles, including one Major, the 1958 U.S. Open. Bolt was a member of the United States Ryder Cup teams of 1955 and 1957. His career Ryder Cup record was 3-1, including a singles victory over Christy O’Connor Snr in 1955 at Thunderbird Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs, California. His fiery disposition earned him the nickname “Thunder”. He was known to break clubs during rounds, and his penchant for throwing clubs led to the adoption of a rule prohibiting such behavior. In his later years, he admitted that a lot of his on-course eruptions were merely showmanship and that he felt they had detracted from his playing. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.

Louis Oosthuizen wins Perth International for first title in two years.

ouis Oosthuizen overcame a nervous start to his final round to win the Perth International by one stroke for an eighth European Tour title in an event also sanctioned by the Tour of Australasia. The 2010 Open winner, who had not won a tournament for two years, went into the final round with a three-stroke lead but that advantage was reduced to one after a bogey at the 2nd, and Australia’s Jason Scrivener briefly tied for the lead. The 33-year-old South African, making his first tournament appearance in Australia, shot a

final round one-under-par 71 for an aggregate of 16-under 272. France’s Alexander Levy finished second, with Scrivener a stroke further back in third. Oosthuizen, the world No21, admitted he had been disturbed by his shaky start. “I missed the second and third greens and was a little rattled after that,” he said. “But I settled in nicely and got back to hitting greens and giving myself opportunities. Then I had a good stretch from holes seven through to 12, although I did leave myself with a vicious first putt on the last [from 50 feet] but luckily I had three so could afford the bogey.”

KPMG on Golf Tourism Growth Trends

Over the past few decades, the success of golf tourism has risen appreciably. Many golf tour operators around the world are tailoring their offers to the specific needs of golfers. Whether as a primary motivation for a holiday or simply as a secondary activity, golf attracts millions of holidaymakers worldwide. The business of golf tourism is not only a revenue generator for golf facilities themselves through spending on green fees, golf equipment and cart rental, but also for a wide variety of travel, leisure and hospitality services, such as hotels, restaurants, retailers, car rental and airlines. This year, KPMGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Golf Advisory Practice undertook a survey of golf tour operators to find out about recent golf tourism trends around the world. The latest survey data was collected from nearly 50 golf tour operators and mainly reflects the situation in 2014.

The volume of touristic golf bookings in 2014 generally increased compared to 2013. 80% of all surveyed operators indicated that they had experienced an increase in the number of bookings YoY from 2013 to 2014. These results and the increasing demand for golf holidays suggest a continuous recovery of the golf travel industry following the lengthy economic crisis.

As in previous years, the majority of trips booked through golf tour operators were four to seven days long. The proportion of longer trip bookings started to increase in 2014 compared to the years before, suggesting an increasing willingness of golf travelers to spend more time and money on their golfing holidays.

According to golf travel operators who participated in this year’s survey, most bookings are made over the internet, by phone or e-mail. Despite its relatively low number, golfers still find it important to seek personal contact with agents for matters of inquiring additional information and advice. While

Furthermore, according to 43% of all survey respondents, golf package prices increased in 2014, while 50% indicated that prices have generally remained at a similar level compared to 2013. Spain and Portugal were named as the destinations with most significant increases in prices in 2014. Likewise, the UAE and the USA also registered some price increases. According to the surveyed golf tour operators, accessibility (including the availability of direct flights), package prices and the quality of the golf courses and facilities are the most important factors for golf travelers when choosing their golf holiday destination. While Spain and Portugal remain the two most popular golf destinations globally, South Africa, Morocco, the UAE, Southeast Asia (specifically Thailand and Vietnam) and Bulgaria were named among popular emerging golf tourism hot spots in 2014. According to the surveyed golf tour operators, well established locations such as the USA and Scotland remain ever-popular destinations for golf holidays.

The most common golf travelers are still the Brits and the North Americans, although they often choose domestic trips too. Scandinavians (mainly Swedish), Germans and Danish travelers are also near the top of the list, with a strong interest in travelling abroad for golf.

While only a few years ago most operators didn’t find the internet a viable option for golf trip bookings, the main trend mentioned in this year’s survey was the emergence of improved online booking systems, as well as various smartphone and tablet applications. With changing customer needs, this direction is expected to gain importance in coming years. As for the timing of bookings, about half of the trips are booked 1-6 months prior to the travel date, while about 40% are booked more than six months in advance (these are typically group bookings). Only approximately 10% of last year’s bookings were made within one month prior to travel. As the results of our survey show, 2014 was a successful year for golf tour operators. Worldwide, the number of bookings increased alongside increasing lengths of trip and greater spending. Golf travelers are exploring more destinations for their golf holidays and are now keener to travel beyond traditional golfing destinations. Besides this, the most active golf travelers still come from the more affluent nations with long-standing golfing traditions, i.e. British, Americans, Canadians, Scandinavians and Germans. With all this in mind, we anticipate that today’s positive trends in the golf tourism industry will continue in the coming years. Something Funny! The A to Z of Golf

A game - The very best golf you can play. A phenomenon seldom experienced by normal golfers, the A game is what Greg Norman used to bring to the golf course every day – except Sunday, and Tiger Woods does bring every day. Ace - A hole in one. Like an ace in a deck of cards, though not quite so common. Completion of a hole in a single stroke. The odds against this happening are about 45,000 to 1-somewhat worse than the odds of finding a brand-new ball lost in the rough (27,000 to 1) but considerably better than the odds of hitting a perfect drive off a crowded first tee (1,195,000 to 1)

Addressing the Ball 1. Assuming the correct stance and placing the head of the club on the ground behind the ball prior to hitting it. 2. Directing statements to the ball before it is hit or while it is in flight, such as: “If you go into that trap, I’ll never wash you again” or “In a way, I hope you miss that cup-I’ve always wondered what’s inside a golf ball.” Advice - According to the rules of golf, advice is “any counsel or suggestion made by one golfer to another about the choice of club, method of play or making of a shot, which contains no more than five errors of fact, contradictory statements or harmful recommendations. Six or more such pieces of misinformation or misinstruction shall constitute a formal golf lesson.”

Age Players - Accomplished golfers who have recorded one of two equally unusual golfing achievements: playing a round of 18 holes at the end of which they had a score equal to their age, or playing a round of 18 holes during all of which they acted their age.

Airmail - To hit a shot much farther than planned (most commonly over the green). Amateur golfers frequently airmail approaches to greens fronted by hazards. Albatross - Another name for a double eagle, a score of three under par on a hole. The most famous albatross in golf’s history was recorded by Gene Sarazen on the fifteenth hole at Augusta NationalGolf Club during the 1935 Masters Tournament. A term generally not used by the amateur golfer. All Square - A term used in match play to indicate that both teams or individuals have cheated on an equal number of holes. Amateur Golfer - One who plays golf for pleasure. Amateur side - Derisive term for the low side of the hole when putting. Amateur golfers often miss their putts short, or come out on the low side of the hole, meaning the ball hasn’t been struck boldy enough to have a chance of falling in. Although a missed putt counts one stroke no matter where it stops, balls

that run by the hole are apparently more “professional.” Analyst - Psychiatric specialist who treats individuals suffering from the delusion that playing golf is a form of pleasure. Approach Shot - A shot which, if it had not caught the lip of the bunker and dropped back into the sand, would have rolled across the green and gone into the water.

Army golf - Phrase used to describe the inconsistent, wayward shots of amateur golfers, that is, “left-right, left-right” (like the drill sergeant’s call during an army march). Arnie’s Army - Name given to the legions of loyal fans who flock to tournaments to follow Arnold Palmer, golf’s “king.” Arnie has always been a fan favorite, and dozens of times his fans have kicked, blocked, or thrown a wayward Palmer shot back onto the fairway or green to help their hero. Away - The player whose ball lies farthest from the hole is “away” and is required by the rules of golf to make the first shot. If, after the stroke is taken, the ball still lies farthest from the hole, the rules permit the player to kick the first bag and throw the first club.
