LE T TER TO THE EDITOR
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Dear Rudy
To the editor Something I always wonder about is how many people cheat at golf and I believe that many, many players do. For instance, have you ever taken a Mulligan? Ever decided to drop a ball near where you lost one, rather than hit a provisional from the tee? Or, maybe you’ve allowed yourself a “gimme” putt without your fellow player’s prior consent? A lot of players will not consider the aforementioned examples to be cheating, however– they are not in accordance with the rules. Yet, they happen, all the time out on the course, don’t they? “Don’t worry about it Rich, it’s the first drive of the day. Go ahead and take a Mulligan.” Or: “OK, I think my ball might be lost. Well, I’ll just drop one over here.” Most of us don’t even give these expressions a second thought. But according to the rules, they constitute cheating. But I guess that the devil lies in the details and whether or not one is playing for fun or not. What are your thoughts?
Thank you for writing in. I think that many casual golfers break numerous rules without even knowing it however I feel that more importantly perhaps in this environment is etiquette. Watch your positioning, mind your shadow, leave the course as you found it. This is really what the game is about and ultimately ensures that everyone has an enjoyable round. Before you tee off decide how seriously you are going to abide with the rules and if you are a hugely competitive group then make sure you know the rules and then stick to them. Otherwise, don’t fret too much about the odd rule infringement (so long as your fellow players know about it and its within reason) and worry more about your overall conduct on the course. You will enjoy a beer at the end of the day knowing that you may have taken a mulligan but that your conduct was exemplary and that you played in the spirit of the game.
Regards Rudy Stephen

Ritchie makes Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open history JC Ritchie became the first player in the history of the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open to successfully defend his title and also the first multiple winner of this Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour event at the Royal Cape GC.
in the past. When I walked onto the green I knew the line already and felt like I had a good chance of making it. Luckily it went in. It feels amazing. Words can’t describe what I’m feeling. It means everything to me,” said Ritchie. This is Ritchie’s ninth Sunshine Tour victory in a career that is becoming an increasingly im pressive one, and which also includes a Sunshine Tour Order of Merit title in the 2019-20 season. This is also the third time he’s defended a title.
Ritchie holed a magnificent 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th to win by a stroke on 18 under par with a final round of 68. Belgium’s Christopher Mivis took second place on 17 under with a closing 66, while South Africans Zander Lombard and Bryce Easton – both with rounds of 70 – as well as Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin (73) shared third on 15 under par.
“It’s special to have that under your belt – to say you’ve been able to defend titles. Especially multiple times. And to start the season off well like this could mean good things for the rest of the year.”
On another perfect day in the Mother City, Ritchie birdied two of his final three holes to take the title.
“I feel like my game is solid and that I’m scoring really well. The plan is to start playing on the DP World Tour. But I’m trying to keep all those milestones quiet in my head and not let them blow up what I’m currently working on.
But it was his putt on 18 that proved the most crucial, which Mivis watched from the clubhouse as he’d already set the target at 17 under for a possible playoff. “I didn’t have the energy for a playoff. I haven’t made a long putt all week so I said to myself on the 18th, ‘It’s time to make a long one now’. I’ve hit that same putt on 18 a couple of times
8
Right now it’s taking everything one shot at a time, and as long as I keep doing what I’m doing really well, all those milestones will happen as they need to.”

KNOW YOUR RULES IDENTIFYING BALL Rules of golf do not compel you to add any markings on your golf ball. However, it is highly recommended in Rule 6-3a that states: “The responsibility for playing the proper ball rests with the player. Each player should put an identification mark on his ball.” Rule 6-3a encourages you to mark your golf to ensure you can identify and play your ball. Should you find a ball in a hazard but are unable to positively identify it, you have to declare a lost ball with the related penalty of stroke and distance rather. Playing someone else’s ball will encounter a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play and the loss of a hole in match play. The penalty can be applied more than once on a hole if you continue to play the wrong ball.

Human beings are also designed to feel fear, the fear response comes from the amygdala and is an instinctive reaction to circumstances that our brains perceive to cause harm. In life, this is a vital function to staying alive, it prevents us from just walking in front of cars, jumping off a cliff or placing our hand on a hot plate. What this means for us on the golf course, is that we are wired to identify the danger, so when we are scared of hitting it into a hazard or out of bounds, this is a normal response to a perceived threat. It is important to understand this so we can respond correctly and understand that every player, even the greatest, perceive the same threats while playing.

This decision led him to making a tournament winning par while several of his playing partners hit their balls in the water which cost them the Championship. RITCHIE DOUBLES UP IN DURBAN a 54-hole scoring record on the Challenge Tour of 25 under par. But on a more tricky final day that changed the nature of this golf course, his lead was whittled down to two shots with five holes remaining as Mivis took up the challenge that was offered to the rest of the field.
JC Ritchie won the Jonsson Workwear Open at Durban CC at the end of February to claim back-to-back victories on the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour, and take another bold step towards his goal of playing on the DP World Tour. On a far more windy day at Durban CC, Ritchie withstood a strong charge from Belgium’s Christopher Mivis and signed for a final round of 71 to win by six shots on 26 under par. “I don’t have the words for this. This week has been unbelievable. I had a hole-in-one, set a course record, had my birthday, broke my lowest score twice, and then won the tournament. I’ve never dreamt of this. This is special,” said a delighted Ritchie, who also won the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open a week earlier. The Johannesburg golfer went into the final round with a 10-shot lead and having set

As Ritchie came through 13 holes at one over for the day, Mivis was eight under through 15 holes. The Belgian made four birdies in five holes over the turn, bogeyed the 12th, and then birdied the 13th, eagled the 14th and birdied the 15th to suddenly have Ritchie in sight for the first time this week. “I had no idea what was going on until we finished playing the 14th hole. That’s when my girlfriend Sarah came up to me and asked if I’d like to know the scores and I said, ‘Yes’. I was surprised. But I never felt like I was in trouble. I always knew somebody was going to shoot maybe seven under par, and that would still be three short of where I was. I knew I just needed to be level par or under par. I was hitting the ball well enough to not shoot over par. I was a bit nervous but once I settled in to the final round I was one over par and still had the lead by a couple of shots, so that made it easier coming down the stretch to make a couple of good swings and find birdies on the last two holes,” Ritchie said. Mivis bogeyed his final two holes to settle for second place on 20 under par with a closing 66.

JOHN COLLIER 2022
John Collier Survey JOHN COLLIER ANNUAL SURVEY 2022
T
he fifteenth edition of the John Collier Annual Survey on Environmental Compliance and Good Governance for South African Golf Courses is due for publication shortly. Notwithstanding the COVID 19 pandemic impacting upon golf clubs in South Africa, many clubs found time to participate in the 2021 Survey. A brief summary of our research findings indicate that little progress has been made in formal compliance of the principles of good governance as set out in the King IV by organisations such as Golf RSA and the PGA. Our research further indicates a continued decline in the number of registered golfers in South Africa and more importantly a decline in the overall percentage compliance level for Golf Clubs in South Africa. These declines are compounded by the lack of the golf industry in giving closer attention to two major strategic risks facing golf in South Africa, namely governance risk and climate change risk. In respect of governance risk, recent international scandals and misgovernance by certain sports organisations in South Africa have attracted several stakeholders to demand greater public scrutiny to restore public trust and reduce the risk of further unethical behaviour. The King IV principles encourage
22
the introducing of more effective, transparent, ethical and democratic management, participatory governance processes and structures with participation of stakeholders. In terms of climate change risk, more and more research has highlighted that Nature is declining at an unprecedented rate and we are fast approaching the cusp of irreversible tipping points with far-reaching effects on the economy, society and life as we know it. The consequences are just as alarming for business and humanity as they are for the environment. Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse are ranked as one of the top five threats humanity will face in the next 10 years. The window for action is narrowing at an alarming rate, while the cost of inaction is increasing. The abovementioned two strategic risks need attention urgently, as ‘Business as usual’ is no longer acceptable. The fifteenth edition of the John Collier Annual Survey challenges GolfRSA and the PGA to lead the way by becoming more involved and vocal about the issues of governance risk and climate change risk. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email ajcollier@telkomsa.net or visit the John Collier Website at www.johncolliergolf.com.

One of the most famous holes on the course is the par-4 17th, with its giant bunker sloping up from the fairway towards the green, and in its day reputed to be the largest in the world. Maccauvlei became known as the only “Inland Links” golf course in the world, and was referred to as the “queen of inland links”. Although the front nine has several memorable holes, it is the closing holes on the back nine which are its piece de resistance. It has been said that the six-hole stretch from 13 onwards is as good and as lovely as anything that this golf-rich land of ours can offer (Phillip Galgut, Compleat Golfer Nov 1997).

Vaal de Gráce Golf Estate is open & welcomes all visitors back!
Bad news travels fast and that was the case when the announcement came just after the initial lockdown in early 2020 that Vaal de Grace Golf Estate were closing their doors. The rumour mill went into overdrive, and it was doom and gloom all round.
African designed golf course is something unique, something that fits no other niche than its own; a friendly course layout providing an enjoyable round for amateurs, yet still challenging enough for the professional golfer.
In reality they did close, but it was a temporary measure whilst the homeowner’s association took over ownership and they were open again as early as October of 2020.
“Nick Price’s first South African designed golf course is something unique, something that fits no other niche than its own”
The golf course did take a slight knock in the months that they were closed but it has recovered quickly and when we were there in February the course looked beautiful. They have a passionate team on board and their enthusiasm is infectious, which is easy to understand once you have seen the golf course and stayed over for a few nights.

Add to this the fact that the Free State / North West border runs through the middle of the island, giving the golfer an opportunity to brag about how he managed to hit his ball from the Free State right into the North West. Accommodation is available on the Estate and this is the perfect destination for memorable weekend breakaways, midweek play and stays, golf days and conferences.

BRIDGESTONE’S NEW TOUR B PACKS INPUT OF TIGER WOODS AND BRYSON DECHAMBEAU INTO IMPRESSIVE NEW GOLF BALL MODELS Leaders in ‘Contact Science’ unveil REACTIV IQ® Cover Technology Bridgestone Golf, the #1 Ball-Fitter in Golf, have introduced its next-level 2022 TOUR B golf ball series, featuring the most advanced iteration of Contact Science to date. Designed to deliver unparalleled distance and greenside control, the new TOUR B golf balls feature the new REACTIV iQ® cover. The 2022 TOUR B family comes in 4 distinct models, TOUR B RX and TOUR B RXS (for swings under 105 mph), and TOUR B X and TOUR B XS (for swings over 105 mph). The new REACTIV iQ cover utilizes impact modifiers and builds on a technology under development for years, which was inspired by Bridgestone staffer Tiger Woods. REACTIV iQ is a smart cover technology that reacts to the force of impact for the needs of each club and shot, solving the trade-off of spin vs. distance. Off the tee it rebounds quickly, delivering explosive velocity and increased distance. Around the green the ball stays on the face longer providing more spin and soft feel. Optimizing the formula of REACTIV iQ, the impact modifier recipe has been maximized for each ball to deliver customized performance for all four TOUR B’s. “When you combine 900 polymers engineers and layer in feedback from Tiger and Bryson, it’s a recipe for innovation,” said Elliot Mellow, Bridgestone’s Golf Ball Marketing Manager. “These guys are hands on with R&D which really helps push our designs to the next level. Our R&D focus the last few years has been the study of contact science, optimizing the moment of impact for the needs of each shot. With REACTIV iQ, we have made great lengths to do just that.”
20 years, prefers the XS for its feel and control around the greens. “I have been with Bridgestone a long time,” said Tiger, “But these last few years I have had a more active role in R&D. With the Bridgestone team, we have been able to perfect the recipe for the cover which has yielded REACTIV iQ, which is an amazing engineering feat. For my game, the new TOUR B is more consistently in my window off the tee while also giving me more feel around the green.” Bryson, who plays the TOUR B X because of its ball speed, challenged Bridgestone’s engineers to push the performance limits once again as they have done so many times before. “The reason I am with Bridgestone is we share the drive to always innovate and look for ways to improve,” said Bryson. “In fact, I really like being part of their R&D team. Over the last couple years, we have optimized the recipe of impact modifiers in the cover to develop the new REACTIV iQ material. Its constant innovation that is allowing me to increase ball speed off the tee while also increasing control and consistency.” Of course, REACTIV IQ doesn’t just optimize the performance of models aimed at players with swing speeds over 105 mph, but also maximizes the combination of spin and distance for those at 105 mph or below. For example, Lexi Thompson fits into the TOUR B RX, and Fred Couples will game the new TOUR B RXS. The fact that Bryson, Tiger, Lexi, and Fred, as well as a wide variety of recreational players, can all find a TOUR B model that fits their game validates the depth of Bridgestone’s new lineup.
The input from both Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau contributed to technology that is used on all four TOUR B models. Tiger, who has 46playing a Bridgestone golf ball forwww.sagolftrader.co.za been over

CALLAWAY, WORKDAY JOIN OTHER COMPANIES IN DISTANCING THEMSELVES FROM PHIL MICKELSON Callaway and Workday have joined the list of sponsors who are distancing themselves from Phil Mickelson after his controversial statements and involvement with a prospective Saudi-backed golf league. “Callaway does not condone Phil Mickelson’s comments and we were very disappointed in his choice of words—they in no way reflect Callaway’s values or what we stand for as a company,” said a company spokesperson. “Phil has since apologized and we know he regrets how he handled recent events. We recognize his desire to take some time away from the game and respect that decision. At this time, we have agreed to pause our partnership and will re-evaluate our ongoing relationship at a later date.” Workday also said that it had decided to drop Mickelson from its list of ambassadors. “At this time, Workday and Phil Mickelson have mutually and amicably agreed to not renew our brand sponsorship that ends this March. We want to thank Phil for his great contributions as a Workday ambassador, both on and off the course. And we continue to wish him and his family all the best.” Mickelson had been a representative for Workday since April 2017 and he re-upped with Callaway, his club sponsor since 2004, in 2017, with the company saying he would represent it for “the remainder of his competitive playing career.” Workday and Callaway joined KPMG and Heineken/Amstel in dropping Mickelson, 51, after he released a statement at the end of
48
February acknowledging the comments he made in a November interview to golf writer Alan Shipnuck were “reckless.” Mickelson said he would be taking “some time away to prioritize the ones I love most and work on being the man I want to be.” Mickelson, in his words, also said he gave his partners “the option to pause or end the relationship as I understand it might be necessary given the current circumstances.” Shortly following this statement, KPMG— one of Mickelson’s primary and longtime financial backers—announced it ended its relationship with the six-time major winner. “KPMG U.S. and Phil Mickelson have mutually agreed to end our sponsorship effective immediately. We wish him the best,” read a statement from a company spokesperson. “KPMG continues to sponsor brand ambassadors on the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour and is the title sponsor of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, a major on the LPGA Tour.” A day later, a spokesperson for Heineken, the parent company of Amstel, said the beer giant had let Mickelson go. “We made the decision to go our separate ways and end Amstel Light’s partnership with Phil Mickelson,” the spokesperson said. “We wish him all the best.” Mickelson came under fire for justifying his relationship with the Saudi government—a regime Mickelson conceded that had a “horrible human rights record” and excutes “people over there for being gay”—as a means of leverage against the PGA Tour.

KNOW YOUR PGA
PRO 1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional ? 17 August 2015.
2. What made you choose this career ? From 4 years old I’ve been on the course with my dad. I started playing myself when I was 7 years old. I’ve always enjoyed all the different aspects there is with golf and knew from early on that golf could possible be a career one day.
was privileged enough to get the opportunity to work at the Nedbank Golf Challenge under the Pro Shop Corporate doing tournament merchandise etc. In my role here I met the MD, Rob Abrams. He has been an inspiration ever since and still gives me guidance although he relocated to London. 6. What has been your biggest challenge since golf courses re-opened after the lockdown ? Lockdown regulations have given us the opportunity to restructure our departments to be more sustainable. With a total loss of income for nearly 3 months this has proven to be the right move financially for our facility. However with life returning to some normality there is a certain expectation of service delivery that our customers are accustomed to but due to reduced staff levels this is not always possible.

We will always strive to keep members happy but the nature of the request or complaint will first be evaluated. 12. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life ? Being in the golfing spectrum you are required to be at the club more often than not, especially on weekends and public holidays. This is a conscious decision you have to make and accept the consequences before you get drawn to far into the industry. However we are lucky enough to have a good support team that stand in for one another when we take some time off. This is vital for our sanity as well as family life outside of working hours.

Settling in the deep south has actually been quite seamless. The weather and the environment have been have been bliss and I was planning on making the move for quite some time. The biggest adjustment is socially and that of missing loved ones and friends up north in Pretoria.
9. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the club ? ADD VALUE We have done a great deal to work with our partners to add value to all member events to give them more at no extra cost. We managed to reduce member rates in our fist financial year post lockdown and that’s been a great marketing tool for us to show that our members are important to us. 14. At Oubaai this is the cornerstone of our belief. Home means something different to all, but a home should be a place that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. This is the underlying value that has created and grown Oubaai Golf Resort into the outstanding residential estate that it is today. Situated adjacent to Herolds Bay on the Garden Route, a mere 8 minutes from George Airport, this hidden gem is ideally located with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. Authentic is one of the first words that comes to mind when thinking about Oubaai, designed to blend in with the natural splendor of the Cape. The eco-friendly ethos has created a natural paradise – providing a haven to an array of wildlife. State of the art security systems offer complete peace of mind, enabling Oubaai residents to wander the expanse of the 546 hectare estate without a worry. The Ernie Els 18 hole Championship course is kept in mint condition and it is one of the most beautiful settings that can be seen anywhere in the golfing world. It was recently awarded 3rd best conditioned course in Southern Cape and 10th in South Africa. The layout of the course is a traditional links type layout where veld grasses line the manicured fairways. The course measures 6,516 meters from the pro tees, which is uniquely long for a coastal course.

MENTAL STRENGTH KEY FOR BOTH PRO GOLFERS AND ULTRA RUNNER SANDES Running ultra marathons and some of the longest races on the planet and a five-hour round of professional golf may not seem to have anything in common. But world-renowned trail runner Ryan Sandes believes both sports place an intense focus on correct mental preparation. “The mental side of things is so important in sport, no matter what the sporting discipline. Just being able to have that sustained focus for a long time is key,” says Sandes, a legend of his sport and a proud Capetonian. And in a similar fashion to a professional golfer mapping out his course strategy in his head, Sandes says he relies heavily on visualisation to prepare for the demands of the trail he’ll be running. “Visualisation is important for me in ultra running. I run through in my mind how the day is going to go – good and bad,” he says.
64
Professional golfers often speak about leaving a bad shot or hole behind them as quickly as possible and not “taking it with” mentally onto the next tee box. Sandes believes in the same. “The biggest thing is that when things aren’t going your way, that you’re still able to keep your focus and get through that and stay present. I break down a race into bite size chunks, and I would imagine in golf it would be a case of taking it one hole at a time and not drifting off and thinking everything is now going to fall apart.” Gary Player has always declared that it’s not a lack of nerves that makes a champion, but rather an ability to correctly manage the inevitable nervous tension before a major tournament. According to Sandes, finding enjoyment in his sport enables him to correctly manage the pressure of performing at an elite level.

WITH
DEREK MUGGERIDGE
Golf Course superintendant Leopard Creek Country Country Club
1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you wanted to take further? I studied landscape technology, after beginning my working career in the landscape maintenance field I worked my way into golf course maintenance. The challenge of maintaining and presenting a golf course has kept me hooked, as well as the variety of other projects that go hand in hand with golf clubs and estates. 2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? Working in the outdoor environment is always rewarding and challenging, the worst part is there are no quick fixes in this job! 3. You are at Leopard Creek, which recently underwent a major change in the grasses on course, what were the reasons for this big change? Improving the playability of the course was a primary objective, selecting grasses that would create firm and fast playing conditions at any time of the year was the challenge. Secondly the sustainability of the golf course in the short and long term. Reducing resource use, primarily water, fertilizer and fuel. The grasses selected are drought tolerant, heat tolerant and more adapted to our local climate. 4. What are your biggest challenges that you face in maintaining these type of grasses? Cynodons must be maintained with regular light treatments, verticutting, preventative disease control and sand dusting are examples. Excessive fertilization will result in excess growth and the need to aggressively treat the turf, this in turn leads to longer recovery times and ultimately annoyed golfers! 5. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Leopard Creek as opposed
72
to other parts of the country? Leopard Creek was planted with cynodon fairways and rough, cynodon is an indigenous grass and suited to our climate. The majority of South African courses will have kikuyu, an exotic grass, as the fairway and natural veld grasses for their rough. The greens are planted with ultradwarf cynodon grass. Bentgrass is predominantly used in the “cooler” parts of the country and standard cynodons or paspalums in the subtropical and drier parts. 6. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country? The basic machinery is the same throughout the country, however specialized machinery may be used to on different courses to assist with their specific needs, we need to verticut our fairways regularly and for this we have dedicated equipment to speed up the process for example. 7. How big a difference does climate and altitude play in golf course maintenance? Climate plays a huge part in course maintenance and grass selection. Critical factors are day-time and night-time temperatures as well and seasonal variations. Light intensity and humidity are affected by altitude and geographic location, these are critical for photosynthesis, growth potential and basic turf potential. 8. To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it? There is a definite correlation between the two, green speeds and heavy rough are the two factors the most to blame. Maintaining a standard that allows golfers to enjoy the course but not making it penal given a good balance. 9. In your opinion does golf course machinery or golfers spread more diseases or seeds like Poa? Golf course equipment aids in spreading seed

and disease, golfers inflict damage to the turf, for example pitchmarks and foot traffic which create locations for weed and disease development. They are both part of the problem but you can’t have one without the other! 10. Do you think golf courses should close for a day to do maintenance? Definitely, the productivity and tasks that the course staff are able to be achieved on maintenance day are well worth the loss of revenue, the club should also be saving on overtime by having a day off for all other staff.
13. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers? Inconsistent bunkers is because of inconsistent maintenance, however the majority of Golf Clubs DO NOT DEDICATE enough resources to bunker maintenance. Resources for bunker maintenance are staff, equipment, construction method, additional irrigation, regular sand purchases and maintenance time, these are all required to produce consistent bunkers.
11. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers? This can happen if not managed by all parties, golfers need to respect the work being done by the course staff and they must be given time to completed their tasks and visa-versa the course staff must respect golfers when the course is open for play. 12. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately? Golfing etiquette dictates that golfers should be leaving the course in the best possible shape for following golfers. If they are not repairing they are only making the course worse for fellow golfers. From an agronomic perspective with the grasses at Leopard Creek it does not make much difference in recovery time.

Johnson, 46, has competed for the United States on five Ryder Cup teams, as part of a sparkling career that has included 12 PGA TOUR victories and two major championship titles.
Johnson has made 455 career PGA TOUR starts, recording 32 top-three finishes among 189 top-25s, consistency a hallmark of his career. Whatever happene B
ack in the day South African golfer Jeff Hawkes was a household name. He played on the European Tour for over twenty years, making the top one hundred on the European Tour Order of Merit every year from 1977 to 1991, with a best ranking of 34th in 1987.
His first professional win was at the 1979 Rolex Pro-Am and his sole European Tour win came at the 1991 Canon European Masters Swiss Open. He has also won three tournaments on the Southern Africa Tour, now the Sunshine Tour. We bumped into Jeff recently at a small Portuguese restaurant in Bedfordview, on the East side of Johannesburg. He still looks fit, healthy, much as he did back in the day, yet most of the patrons probably had no idea of who he was, no idea of what a legend he is within the game of golf.
We were eager to chat to Jeff about his to these days. “I was born in in Mthatha in 1953 and then moved to Durban at t retail stores, mostly sports, toys and clo sports together and at the age of nine, cricket ground at Mt Edgecombe Golf C progress to the golf course where I play the field. Hearing of all that he has achieved, we pressed Jeff on whether he had any regrets, to which he replied, “I would say that my biggest disappointment is that tour life is not good for family life, and I missed my children very much. We all have times when you need support or make a decision that can change your life”.
“When I was on tour, I did not have the support or sponsors that allowed me to choose what I needed to do but to provide for my family I had to keep playing not matter what. I am grateful for what I have and what I have had, but it could have been better with the right support and guidance. Our day was very different, and I am grateful that I have lived a very full life, recent heart issues have made me understand this”.
So, what does Jeff Hawkes currently do? “Whilst having done many different things in life, my golf course design (Eshowe Golf Club) and reconstruction has been my most enjoyable. I currently have a bulk fuel company called Hawkeye Fuels and sell fuel to clients around Africa. My golf has become very rare and when I do play it is social, in fact I don’t even have clubs but pull a club from the partner who is closest to me at the time. I have been playing at Kempton Golf Club and must add that what they have achieved there is fantastic, great course, good design and great people”.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

BRAVE BROOMHEAD SEALS STUNNING SA STROKE PLAY VICTORY
Jonathan Broomhead capped an unforgettable week at Randpark CC with the South African Stroke Play Championship trophy in his arms, a first international victory under the belt and the roaring applause of his peers and appreciative fans ringing in his ears. Three off the pace at the start of the final round, the Durban golfer began the final push with a bogey start, but 17 holes later, Broomhead boxed a par putt on the 18th hole of the Firethorn Course to win the GolfRSA flagship event. And with his rounds of 67, 64, 64 and 66, Broomhead equalled the 72-hole tournament record – set by Sweden’s Oliver Gillberg at Pecanwood in 2018 – with his winning score of 27-under-par 261. The 2022 champion edged GolfRSA No 1 Christiaan Maas by two shots and finished four strokes ahead of Scotland’s top-ranked Rory Franssen. GolfRSA National Squad member Christiaan Burke and Sam Bairstow from

England tied for fourth on 22-under. “It all felt very unreal after I sunk the final putt, and it still feels a little unreal if I’m honest,” said the soft-spoken Broomhead. “It’s been an unbelievable week; unforgettable. Today we had the best amateurs in the country and some of the top golfers from Scotland and England in the top 10, contesting for the title, and to come out on top is the most incredible feeling ever. This is definitely the best week of my life.” FINAL LEADERBOARD (top 10) 261 Jonathan Broomhead 67 64 64 66 263 Christiaan Maas 64 65 63 71 265 Rory Franssen SCO 68 68 64 65 266 Sam Bairstow ENG 69 67 65 65; Christiaan Burke 69 65 64 68 267 Altin van der Merwe 63 69 70 65 271 Kyle de Beer 69 65 68 69 273 Yurav Premlall 69 66 69 69 276 Casey Jarvis 71 67 67 71; Keegan Mclachlan 67 70 72 67

JARVIS CONQUERS LEOPARD CREEK FOR AFRICAN AMATEUR DOUBLE Casey Jarvis continued his record-setting habit when he became the first back-to-back winner of the African Amateur Stroke Play Championship with a four-stroke win over fellow GolfRSA National Squad member Yurav Premlall last month.
to keep the heat on. A double bogey on the 17th derailed his charge but the 17-year-old showed his class with a closing eagle on the par-five 18th to finish on 11-under-par, ensuring a runner-up to Jarvis for a second straight year.
However, unlike the forceful style with which he reeled in the SA Amateur and SA Stroke Play calendar double and the Freddie Tait Cup in the SA Open in 2020, and his runaway victory in last year’s event at Glendower to complete the South African Swing trifecta, it was a measured and mature performance that landed Jarvis in the winner’s circle at Leopard Creek this week.
“I battled to hit greens over the first two days, but I slowly got into the groove and today was a good, solid round,” the reigning Nedbank Junior Challenge champion and 2021 Freddie Tait Cup winner said. “I went bunker-to-bunker on the 17th and messed up the hole, but I’m pleased with where my game is at, and it felt really good to get that eagle at the last.”
The 18-year-old curbed his naturally aggressive game to secure a big win on a course that has not been kind to him in the past. His rounds of 70, 65, 68 and 70 saw him retain the title, but it was the manner of his 15 under par victory that was most satisfying for Jarvis. “I’ve always struggled to score here, so I changed my strategy and I stuck to my game plan for four days. Today I played probably one of the most conservative rounds of my life,” he said. “I played away from the flags and took less club off the tee to make sure I kept it in play.
Meanwhile, new teenage sensation Aldrich Potgieter, fresh from an 11-birdie 65 in the third round, continued his blistering form on the last day. The big-hitting 17-year-old opened with a double bogey but racked up seven birdies – including pairs on nine and 10, and 12 and 13 – to get himself firmly into the hunt. Regrettably the Pinnacle Point junior’s aggressive style cost him dearly on the final two holes.
Jarvis slept on a four-stroke lead and, after opening with two birdies and picking up another shot on the par-three fifth, looked to be cruising for a comfortable win. His nearest rivals, however, had other ideas. Premlall struggled on the opening nine but fired six birdies in seven holes after the turn

TIGER WOODS FINISHES ATOP INAUGURAL PLAYER IMPACT PROGRAM For a quarter century we’ve been saying that Tiger Woods “moves the needle.” So it should be no surprise that despite playing in just one tournament in 2021 – the unofficial parent-child PNC Championship – it was announced in early March, via a memo to the TOUR membership, that Tiger Woods finished atop the inaugural Player Impact Program. He will receive $8 million for finishing atop the standings that measured the players who generated the most positive interest in the PGA TOUR over the previous year. Woods finished ahead of runner-up Phil Mickelson ($6 million). The remaining players in the top 10 and the respective payouts were: 3. Rory McIlroy ($3.5 million) 4. Jordan Spieth ($3.5 million) 5. Bryson DeChambeau ($3.5 million) 6. Justin Thomas ($3.5 million) 7. Dustin Johnson ($3 million) 8. Brooks Koepka ($3 million) 9. Jon Rahm ($3 million) 10. Bubba Watson ($3 million) The inaugural Player Impact Program, which awarded $40 million to the top 10 finishers, was measured from Jan. 1, 2021, to Dec. 31, 2021, and the final Player Impact Program Score was calculated based on year-end data. For 2022, the bonus pool will increase by $10 million, to $50 million total. Independent auditor Grant Thornton certified the results. While many have been under the impression that the Player Impact Program is a “social media contest,” the scope of the metrics includes five criteria obtained from objective, third-party data measurement services:
90
- Internet Searches: Number of times a player’s name is searched on the internet; - Earned Media: Number of unique news articles that include a player’s name; - Social Media: Social media score that considers a player’s reach, conversation and engagement metrics; - TV Sponsor Exposure: Duration (time) that a player’s sponsor logo(s) appears on screen during Saturday and Sunday PGA TOUR telecasts; - Awareness: A player’s general awareness score among broad U.S. population. Woods has long been the game’s most famous name, so it was no surprise that he would rank first in internet searches and general awareness. More surprising, perhaps, was that he wound up No. 1 in earned media after spending more than half the year almost entirely out of the spotlight. And when he did return, his impact was felt. With Tiger returning from injury, fans tuned in to the PNC eager to see an old friend. “It’s almost immeasurable,” a senior PNC executive told golf.com, speaking of the surge in interest. But it was very measurable: NBC Sports reported a total weekend audience of 2.3 million viewers, up 53% over 2020. A headline on golfdigest.com said it all: “Not surprisingly, the PNC Championship did massive television numbers.” As for when Woods will tee it up again, he said at The Genesis Invitational last month that progress has been slower than he’d like, and he needs to be able to walk 72 holes first.

Reach for the stars with your Turfgras By: Sue de Zwart It is time for us to reach for the stars & do whatever it takes to produce our ultimate playing surface for our club. Regardless of your budget & resources let’s aim to produce your ultimate playing surface within your budget. Decide on your priorities & systematically work through them. To me your priorities should always be greens followed by tees, bunkers, fairways, semi rough & of course DETAIL. 1.Firstly let’s take the guessing game of the equation as much as possible. Should you want to know how well your greens are functioning – this can be done by sending sand samples to Thomas Turf laboratories in the USA. This is the perfect opportunity to ensure you have good infiltration rates. Does your topdressing sand match the material your greens will built with?
staff making decisions related to irrigation. It is critical to take the time to train your irrigation team. Ensure the data in the field matches the data in your central control computer. Water greens at the appropriate time – cool season greens love early morning 4-6 am watering and warm season turf seems to prefer late afternoon watering 4-6pm. Once the irrigation cycle has run it is important to do your disease check (in the dew) & check your moisture levels prior to play. This is the time to hand water any areas which do not have sufficient moisture to cope with your forecast weather for that day.
2. Check for day lights (drainage point) If your greens are not draining well – drains blocked or as I so often come across – greens draining below water – your playing surface will have issues. Should your greens be draining under water – you can add a sump pump – this is a simple, cost effective solution. Remember turfgrass requires light, oxygen, nutrition & water. Poor drainage or overwatering will lead to algae & moss on the playing surface. 3. Manage your moisture – this will ultimately determine your playing surface quality. Moisture meters are a fantastic tool & should be issued to all

ss Maintenance playing surface (reducing the risk of algae, moss & poa annua) whilst holding 21% more moisture in the root zone. 4. Nutrition – after water nutrition how much & how often we feed greatly impacts our playing surface quality. It is best to run an annual soil test & Talking Turf will gladly assist you to tailor make a nutrition programme to balance the nutrients in your soil & ultimately produce your ultimate playing surface.
5. Plant Growth Regulators – Primo Maxx is an incredible product I have personally worked with since 1996. This product is the ticket to you taking your playing surface to the next level. The improved density, colour, rooting & playability make this product a no brainer. The added benefits of an immediate reduction of 50 % clippings & reduction of mowing make it incredibly affordable. 6. Just as we use tools to protect us from heat &

cold let’s give this to our turf plant to take it to the next level. Ryder is an incredible product allowing us to protect our plant from extreme heat or cold. The application rates on greens are 300 – 500 ml/ha every 14 days (tank mixable with any product other than copper). On warm season tees you could apply 1,5 – 2 litres every 6 weeks from April to August. You will be amazed at the change in your plant health.
We look forward to producing your ultimate playing surface!

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK is the Golfer from the past?
WHO
• He was born in Philadelphia on August 12th 1891 and passed away on August 1st 1971. • The son of a mailman, he was a good student but dropped out before graduation to become a professional golfer. • He was the first American golfer to win the U.S. Open in 1911 & 1912. • He remains the youngest person to ever have won the U.S. Open (aged 19). • He was the first player to break par over 72 holes in a significant event, which he did at the 1912 U.S. Open. • At the age of 23, he blacked out when entering the clubhouse at the Atlantic City Country Club, where he was the club professional. After this incident, he spent the rest of his life in mental hospitals and rest homes, or living with his family in Philadelphia, suffering from mental illness. • Golf historian Robert Sommers wrote that, if not for his illness, he could have been the greatest of them all.
