LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Dear Marc

To the editor When I first started out playing golf, I thought it was all about swinging hard and hoping to make contact. I reckoned that if I needed to hit the ball a long distance, I needed to use lots of force. I soon realised that making solid contact created distance – and I rarely made solid contact from swinging hard. The more I analysed my game, the more apparent it became that there was a negative correlation between how hard I swung and how far I hit the ball. When I slowed it down and focused on making solid contact, good things started to happen.

Thanks for writing in. Your letter has profound meaning and I hope that many people read this. So many lessons can be learned through playing golf and it really is the game of life. All the best and I trust that you will achieve your specific objectives going forward. Regards

This made me think about life and how the same rules apply. Rarely is much accomplished from merely swinging hard. Sheer force does create action, but it’s often negated by a lack of strategy. Like in golf, I’ve learned to pull back a little, focus, and work on specific objectives. Regards Marc Rush

Strydom breaks records on his way to Tour Championship win

T

risten Strydom made his professional breakthrough on the Sunshine Tour when he won the season-ending Tour Championship in record style at Serengeti Estates. Strydom built on a two-stroke lead overnight and closed with a 66 to win by six shots, which is the biggest margin of victory in the history of the Tour Championship. Strydom also claimed the record for the lowest winning total in the history of the Tour Championship on 21-under-par 267, surpassing the previous record of 19-under-par 269 by Garrick Higgo in 2020. He is also the first player in Sunshine Tour history to win the Tour’s Qualifying School and the Tour Championship. Strydom won the Qualifying School in 2020. “I can’t describe how it feels. It’s been hard for me and I’ve worked extremely hard to get where I am today. I’m blessed with a lot of good people around me. It makes it so special to get that first victory for everybody who believes in me,” said Strydom. Pieter Moolman took second place on 15 under par with a final round of 70, while George Coetzee finished third on 11 under with a closing 70. Strydom was never under pressure on the final day as he made four birdies on the front nine – three of them in succession – to continue moving away from the field. He stumbled with a bogey on 10 but corrected this with another

6

birdie on the 11th. When he added a birdie on the 14th the title was beyond doubt, and his final birdie on the 18th confirmed it. “I came out with an attacking mindset. I didn’t want to give anybody a chance. I had a good gameplan and I felt really comfortable with the golf course. I’ve had so many second-place finishes and it does get to you after a while. Buy my caddie just kept telling me to stay patient and it will happen at the right place and right time. And it’s great to have finally done it,” said Strydom. The win is a groundbreaking one for a player who was one of South Africa’s top amateurs and who then took some time to adjust to the professional ranks. The victory earns Strydom a one-year exemption on the Sunshine Tour. The Tour Championship wrapped up the Sunshine Tour 2021/22 season. Shaun Norris claimed the top spot on the final Order of Merit thanks largely to his victory in the DP World Tour co-sanctioned Steyn City Championship. That earns Norris exemptions into the US Open and Open Championship this year as well as the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City. Dean Burmester finished second on the Order of Merit and Thriston Lawrence ended the season in third place. Jayden Schaper’s finish of fourth in the Tour Championship secured him the Rookie of the Year award.

FLEETWOOD RETURNS FOR 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEDBANK GOLF CHALLENGE Tommy Fleetwood will return to the Nedbank Golf Challenge as ‘Africa’s Major’ celebrates its milestone 40th anniversary from November 10 – 13, 2022.

Fleetwood recorded a top ten finish at Gary Player Country Club, which proved to be crucial as he went on to top what was then the Race to Dubai Rankings for the first time in his career.

The European Ryder Cup star lifted the trophy in 2019 – the last time the event took place due to the Covid-19 pandemic – and he will defend his title when the $6,000,000 event makes a much-anticipated return to Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club. The penultimate tournament on the 2022 DP World Tour schedule will also carry an increased number of DP World Tour Ranking Points, with 7,000 points available.

The 2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge will once again be included on the DP World Tour schedule in partnership with Nedbank and Sun International, and as the penultimate event before the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge has been a highlight of the South African sporting calendar since its first edition in 1981, with former European Number One Fleetwood joining a glittering list of winners when he sealed his fifth DP World Tour title after coming from six shots back going into the final day to triumph in a thrilling play-off against Swede Marcus Kinhult. The English star joined a roll of honour that includes South African golfing icon Ernie Els – a three-time winner of the event alongside Lee Westwood, Nick Price and David Frost – the legendary Seve Ballesteros, and Major Champions Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman, Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett. Two years earlier, during a stellar 2017 season,

20

The winner of the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit will receive a place in the 64-player field at Gary Player Country Club. “We are delighted that the Nedbank Golf Challenge will make its long-awaited return this November. We look forward to once again working with our partners at Nedbank, Sun International and the Sunshine Tour as we welcome Tommy Fleetwood and golfing stars from around the world back to Sun City,” said Keith Pelley, DP World Tour Chief Executive. “We’re delighted to welcome back the Nedbank Golf Challenge to Sun City after a two-year absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘Africa’s Major’ is a showcase event for our flagship resort, and we’re looking forward to celebrating the 40th edition of what has always been a very special partnership between Sun International and Nedbank. This incredible golf tournament has captivated South Africa and the world for decades,” said Anthony Leeming, Chief Executive of Sun International.

CELEBRATING THE 2022 SA SENIOR IPT CHAMP The 2022 SA Senior Inter-Provincial had all the ingredients of a Hollywood blockbuster – weather issues, matches going down to the wire, victory and promotion battles perched on a knife’s edge – but in the end, Central Gauteng, Free State, Southern Cape and Ekurhuleni were crowned the victors. The first curveball was the weather, which impacted play before the tournament even got underway. The A-Section IPT kicked off with the Senior and Super Seniors forced to walk during the official practice round as rain swept across the perfectly prepared championship layout at Heron Banks GC in the Free State. Meanwhile, in Mpumalanga, where the B-Section was being played, the competitors couldn’t even appreciate the magnificence of the Middelburg CC as their practice round was cancelled when the rain flooded the course and inclement weather forced everyone indoors. But what a difference a day makes, as both Sections teed off in bright sunshine at their respective courses. The Free State Seniors asserted themselves in the B-Section in Middelburg, while at Heron Banks, the Western Province Seniors got their A-Section title defence off the mark with a double victory. However, Central Gauteng also went two-for-two in their opening matches, which set the stage for the drama that unfolded on the final day. Both teams stayed the course, reeling in points and, heading into the final round, they were tied on 10 points each. Central Gauteng had a small advantage though, having edged Western Province for the No 1 spot in the log on day three with 46 games points to 43.5. “With a massive thunderstorm forecast to hit Heron Banks shortly after lunch time on the final day, we changed the format and played the Singles first to give every team opportunity to score the maximum points,” explained GolfRSA Tournament Director David Younge. “The storm arrived as predicted just as the first foursomes got underway, and very quickly lightning forced us to suspend play. After some two hours of non-stop rain and lightning, it became clear that play would not resume, and we had to call a result. “Under the format of the tournament, the score of a game through nine holes stood as the result when play was suspended, while any game that had not gone through nine holes was halved.” When the calculations were done, it was Central Gauteng who emerged victorious with a 6.5 – 5.5 result against Southern Cape and a 7 – 5 win over Western Province. “This is our fifth win in seven years, and the team is absolutely delighted,”

When action wrapped up for the B-Section Super Seniors at Middelburg CC, Ekurhuleni and North West were tied on 8 points and 20 game points each. “Under the format of the tournament, it went to player count-out and you can just imagine the relief and celebration in the camp when we heard that we had pulled it through,” said Ekurhuleni captain Errol Civin. “At the start of the day, I figured we were in a great position, but my team mate Rodney Smith warned that North West was still in with a shout. We decided to go all out and thanks goodness we had two solid victories, because who would have predicted how things would turn out?” Ekurhuleni defeated Free State 4 – 2 and Northern Cape 5.5 – 0.5 to bank four points and vital game points, but North West matched the Roses with a 4 – 2 win over Eastern Province and a 6 – 0 clean sweep against Border. “I am incredibly proud of the boys, and what we accomplished here,” Civin said. “I’ve been playing IPTs for 21 years, but at 71 you don’t know how many more chances you will get. One of the most famous holes on the course is the par-4 17th, with its giant bunker sloping up from the fairway towards the green, and in its day reputed to be the largest in the world. Maccauvlei became known as the only “Inland Links” golf course in the world, and was referred to as the “queen of inland links”. Although the front nine has several memorable holes, it is the closing holes on the back nine which are its piece de resistance. It has been said that the six-hole stretch from 13 onwards is as good and as lovely as anything that this golf-rich land of ours can offer (Phillip Galgut, Compleat Golfer Nov 1997).

KNOW YOUR PGA

PRO

1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? I started my apprenticeship under the guidance of Johan Engelbrecht at Parow Golf Club in 1997. I qualified in March 2000. I also joined the Namibian PGA in 2013 and am currently still a member of that PGA. 2. What made you choose this career? My family has ties with professional golf and the sport. I have a golfing family that represented the game at every level, and I believe that I was forged and destined to follow suit. 3. Has it always been golf for you? Golf, Golf, Golf, and Golf, is there anything else that matters? hahaha 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? I played tour golf for many years. I was very fortunate to win some events on the Sunshine Tour, and for me winning the Zambian Open twice and back to back in 2006 and 2007 was one of the highlights. Another event that stood out (Vodacom Origins Final 2005) was incredibly tough because of the names that played and the conditions we had to bear. The cut came at +17 that week… I was the only player that finished under par around the Links at Fancourt. 5. You have been in the golf industry since leaving school, who has been your mentor? I have only ever been in the golfing industry. Since the day I left school, this was all I wanted to do and have done. I had so many mentors. The golf industry is so broad and covers so many

40

aspects that it would be very unfair of me to pick just one. I still have people that I constantly learn from throughout my career and even today. I have always been inquisitive about how every aspect of the golfing industry works and operates. I made it my priority to work with as many leaders as possible. I am truly blessed to have met so many mentors. 6. You were based in Windhoek for over 10 years, what has been your biggest challenge at Mosselbay GC? Yes, I spent the last ten years in Namibia and learned and made lifelong friends. Mossel Bay Golf Club is in total contrast to what I dealt with daily in Namibia. Here they play 48 000 rounds a year compared to the 18 000 in Windhoek. Here I have the opportunity to bring the experiences during my touring years to the members and guests. 7. Describe a typical workday for you at Mosselbay GC? I strive daily to improve the experience our members and guests receive when they come to play golf. My day is filled with meetings and discussions with all the different line managers to see what else we can do to improve and provide an environment where they can come to enjoy the game we all love so much. 8. Has golf grown in your opinion over the last 18 months? Absolutely, at Mossel Bay Golf Club we have experienced record monthly rounds. We have also seen a dramatic increase in memberships in the last three months. This is an excellent sign that the industry is doing well. 9. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to the club? Service delivery. Golfers need to be a part of a facility where they can experience all the nice stuff they see on TV. Television and social media sell the game on our behalf, and we need to keep track of what is available and affordable

our code of conduct. Also, we all have different opinions. If the communication line in your club is on par, then the members know how every department in their club operates. If they have opinions, I love to listen to them and give this my full attention, but I believe that if we respect each other’s views and discuss this correctly, this “quote” is never an issue.

Steve Basson General Manger Mossel Bay Golf Club for golfers. If you keep working on the right stuff and your members and visitors feel appreciated, the result is more feet. I believe that if your product is up to standard, people want to be a part of that. 10. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Mosselbay GC? We currently average about 160 rounds per day, seven days a week. We have marshalls on the course assisting with the pace of play. We also found that this problem is alleviated when we are efficient with the starting of the round on the first tee. When golfers don’t arrive on time or are late on the tee, this causes a backlog early in the round. So we try to make sure that from the first hole, the pace of play is monitored. 11. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? We have so many members at the club that come from such a wide variety of industries. Most of them, if not all, were involved in some structure in their business life. Here at the club, it is no different. The club has set rules and regulations, and as members, we try to abide by May | June 2022

12. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes, I must be available at other “normal” office times. The industry lends itself to this norm. However, I think any working environment affects a person’s personal life. The key for me is to leave the club at the club, and when I am home, I spend this time a100% with my family. 13. After spending so much time in Namibia? What has been the biggest adjustment for you? I am born South African, and will always be. Although, I think one of the nicer adjustments is to experience rain again…. 14. What are your short & long term goals? Most of us try, especially in this industry, to leave a lasting legacy. So I want to give back and continue to give back to members and golfers all that I experienced when I still played tour golf. 15. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Both my boys play hockey and squash. I must admit that I prefer watching hockey as I find it challenging to keep up with boys inside a little room playing with a piece of prestic that refuses to bounce high enough for my speed levels, haha. Spending time with my wife is one of my favourite past times. 16. Do you still get time to play? Ever since we moved to Mossel Bay, I get time to play some more with the boys and love the game. The golf course is in absolutely great shape, and I also enjoy the opportunity to experience the service that we strive to deliver by playing more.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS ON TOUR

I

t was 50 years ago to the day, on April 12, 1972, that the first official tournament in history of the European Tour - now known as the DP World Tour – took place at Golf Club de Pals, in Girona, with the opening round of the Open de España. The inaugural tournament was won three days later by Spaniard Antonio Garrido who, alongside the legendary Seve Ballesteros, went on to be the first Continental Europeans to play in the Ryder Cup in 1979. The 1972 Open de España was the

50

culmination of a near 20-year campaign led by John Jacobs OBE, the Tour’s founding father, to modernise the structure of tournament golf in Europe. Since that day, the Tour has evolved into a global sporting organisation, having played 1916 tournaments at 440 different venues and in 50 different countries over the past half a century. A total of 8,468 different players have played on Tour representing 110 different countries. Of those, 557 different players have won, representing 37 different nations.

The Garden Route

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - T H E G A R D E N R O U T E

The Garden Route is a stretch of the south-western coast of South Africa, extending from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The name derives from the fertile and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the abundant lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. This stretch has a moderate climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. Temperatures seldom fall below 10 °C in winter and infrequently climb beyond 28 °C in summer. Rain follows year-round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean Ten nature reserves hug the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to seals, coral reefs, dolphins and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale which go there to calve in the winter and spring (July to December). The Garden Route is very popular with overseas visitors in the summer months and the numerous golf courses on the route are busy during this period. Things slow down a bit in the winter however and this is when excellent deals can be found. The weather is as good if not better and the golf courses are always in great condition. The strip map contains links to all the golf courses, contact them directly to see what winter specials they are offering or have a look at their respective advertisements. Summer or winter one thing is sure; the Garden Route is a veritable treasure trove for golfers!

QA &

WITH

KONRAD SUHR Golf Course Superintendent. Pinnacle Point Estate

1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further? Many years back I was on the golf committee at a 9-hole club in Mpumalanga. The course superintendent resigned on very short notice and I was tasked to oversee the course maintenance while we were looking for a suitable replacement. I quickly got to realise that there is much more to it than just mowing grass and that’s when it all started. 2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? The best is having mother nature in your corner. The worst is the times when mother nature joins the “Murphy’s law” corner and boxes against you. 3. You are at Pinnacle Point, a coastal course, what is your biggest challenge maintaining a coastal course on the Garden Route? A combination of factors can make the maintenance of the course very challenging. Being situated so close to the ocean and relying on effluent water for our irrigation often causes very high salt levels in our soil. The high winds we experience from time to time can make bunker maintenance very challenging. The setting and

the views at Pinnacle Point are stunning but the high slopes and up/downhills can be very tricky to navigate on a mower, especially in wet and windy conditions. 4. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) on the Garden Route to other parts of the country? At Pinnacle Point we have paspalum fairways, rye/ fescue roughs and bent/Poa-annua greens. There is not really a preference for one specific type of grass on the Garden Route and one will find a variety of different grasses on the fairways and roughs (cool and warm-season varieties) at the different courses. Bent grass is the preferred grass for the greens though. Inland and up north, Kikuyu seems to be the preferred grass for fairways and roughs. 5. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country? Golf course maintenance equipment is standard on most courses and different grass types do not really need different equipment. The terrain and height of the cut will determine which turf equipment is best suited for a particular golf course. In our case at Pinnacle Point we have severe slopes, uphills and downhills. Some of the smaller and lighter mowers that one would use on a flat course are not suited for our course. 6. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance? It makes a huge difference. Turfgrass performance varies under different climates and locations. Throughout my career, I have maintained courses in Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Northwest, and the Southern Cape provinces. Most courses even have different microclimates on the course that can influence how the turfgrass will perform at different locations on the course. A “one size fits all” approach does not work, and agronomic programs need to be site-specific for the best results.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - A L L A B O U T G R E E N K E E P I N G with this? We try to limit the interaction between the golfers and maintenance staff by staying ahead of play while doing most of the work. When we need to perform tasks while there are golfers in the area, we try to get the task done without disturbing the golfers. The team knows where the “danger zones and safe areas are on each hole. 11. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately? 12. A correctly repaired pitch mark will heal in 2 to 3 days, while an unrepaired pitch mark will take 15 to 20 days to heal. The same with a divot that was left overnight for the crew to put back the next morning. It will die, where a freshly replaced divot has a very good chance and to reestablish itself in the turf mat. Paspalum fairways and Rye/Fescue roughs 7. To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it? A couple of tricky pin positions & tees on the tips paired with a howling South Easterly wind can really make the course very challenging and slow down one’s round. Before set-up, we check the wind direction & speed and try to find a balance that will suit the average golfer best. 8. In your opinion does course machinery or golfers spread more seeds like POA or diseases? Both golfers and turf machinery can spread seeds or disease. The first signs of Poa infestation on a pure bent course usually happen on the practice green. This is the area where a visitor will walk on first when preparing for his round. Any seeds stuck to the soles of his golf shoes are then dislodged and can establish themselves on the practice green. This tends to happen less with the newer spike-less golf shoes most golfers are wearing today. Course machinery does the same when moving from one area to the next on a golf course. Fungal spores can also be spread on a golf course by machinery and golfers.

13. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? Golfers often tend to forget that a bunker is a hazard and that hazards are there to penalize a bad shot. The perfect white and smooth bunkers at Augusta during the Masters tournament week cannot be achieved in most areas. Most courses don’t have the budget to use pure silica sand and bunkers are usually filled with cheaper sand. The type will vary from course to course which already makes for bunkers playing differently at different courses. Our bunkers are hand raked daily and the raking team carry depth probes with them to make sure the sand depth is uniform. Even with all the checks in place, the wind can still move sand around or blow sand out after we have prepared the bunkers for play.

9. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf course to close one day per week for maintenance? In a perfect world, yes. It is not always possible though and varies from course to course. A lot of the cultural practices required to maintain a golf course in a pristine condition, are done in a more effective way when they are performed without golfers on the course. 10. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal

GUTSY PACE PREVAILS TO LIFT 5TH SA WOMEN'S OPEN TITLE

I

f there is a virtue in holding on for dear life, then Lee-Anne Pace displayed it in spades as she came back from the dead and triumphed in a gruelling six-hole play-off to win her record fifth Investec South African Women’s Open Championship title at Steenberg Golf Club.

Open later in the year. The fifth Investec South African Women’s Open trophy came with a R 728 550 pay-day in the City of Cape Town and a bank of points that rocketed Pace to the top of the 2022 Race to Costa del Sol rankings. She sits on 681.67 points.

“I can’t believe it, I honestly can’t believe it, I’m in shock,” said Pace after she eventually dispatched the challenge of the Argentine Magdalena Simmermacher after the duo was tied on level-par after 72 holes of regulation play. That was after overnight leader Becky Brewerton of Wales heartbreakingly slipped out of contention after a final round six-over 78 to miss out on a play-off spot by one. In addition to her fifth South African Women’s Open title, it was also Pace’s 11th Ladies European Tour victory and her 15th Sunshine Ladies Tour title – and she also earned herself a place at the US Women’s

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

ELS AND ASM OPENING INTERNATIONAL DOORS FOR TALENTED YOUNG SOUTH AFRICANS

E

rnie Els understands exactly the value of international opportunity for a sportsman or women. And it’s why he’s extremely proud of the fact that the international sports scholarship programme he helped launch in 2018 and remains a partner in has now grown to having provided sports scholarships to top American colleges for almost 300 young South Africans. Els was one of the founding partners of the ASM Sports Group in 2018 along with Piet Pieters (who has 37 years of experience in the American sports market) and Chris Vidal (formerly a sports recruitment advisor to the International Olympic Committee, the World Golf Foundation and Team Great Britain). Based in West Palm Beach in Florida, ASM has one very clear aim: to give talented young South African sportsmen and women opportunities to use their talent to gain a quality education in the American college system. “I know exactly what international opportunities can mean and create for South African sportsmen and women,” says Els as he reflects on the rapid success of the ASM Sports Group. I was very fortunate early in my career to get the support I needed. In 1992 I won the South African Open. That got me into DP World Tour events and into The Open Championship, where I finished fifth that year. And two years later I won my first Major in the US Open. So I know the difference international opportunity can make for a South African sportsman or woman.”

84

One of South Africa’s greatest sportsmen saw the value of this when he launched his Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation with a specific focus on providing underprivileged children with golf talent the opportunity to not only develop their game but also to build a life through a quality education. “I’m passionate about seeing South Africans succeed. It’s been the driving force behind our Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation in golf, and ASM has taken this even further. We now have almost 300 South Africans in scholarships in America. The fact that they are getting a world-class education at the same time as developing their sport is what really excites me about this initiative.” For Els, the ASM Sports Group has taken this philosophy to next level in all sports as it’s providing college opportunities for 1 576 students from 104 countries, including 295 South Africans, in the sports of golf, soccer, tennis, rugby, hockey, swimming, rowing, water polo and gymnastics. It has already provided over $7.5 million per year in sports scholarships and has high-profile ambassadors such as multiple Major winner and former world number one golfer Els, Springbok Bryan Habana, former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, South African tennis great Johan Kriek, and other iconic international sports stars such as golfer Sir Nick Faldo, footballers Michael Owen and

We have a worldwide network of recruiting agents, many of whom went through the college system themselves so have an intimate knowledge of this system,” explains Pieters. The doorway to international opportunity has long been a key development factor for South African sport. It’s something one of the

country’s most successful tennis stars, Wayne Ferreira, has also been able to appreciate. “You can’t be a great tennis player only playing in South Africa. You need to be able to go and see what’s happening in Europe and the US,” said Ferreira. “It’s very important for young players to go to where the tennis is and see what’s out there, and where they stand compared to everybody else and what they need to do to get to that level. That’s the hard part because you need to travel, and a lot of people can only do that with funding.” Els and his team at the ASM Sports Group are hoping to meet this need.

This is the perfect time to: • • • •

DRAINAGE: Any wet areas or bunkers needing drainage?

YOUR TEAM: Staff Leave – a fresh and appreciated team is the trick. We have spent time this year on developing an “Attitude of Gratitude” with our team. It is a good balance of give & take. Team training – I love training my teams in small huddles. This provides a great opportunity for staff members to feel important, educated and in turn give their all.

BUNKERS: This is a high maintenance element on every course.

IRRIGATION: As this is the heart & soul of every golf course this is where we always begin.

Gradecki rolled in his final putt for par and victory. It was an incredible victory for a player who overcame a five-shot deficit at the start of the final round to win, and who had missed the cut in three of his last five tournaments in South Africa.

Gradecki was three strokes clear of the field and standing over his winning five-foot putt on the final green when the hooter sounded for yet another suspension because of dangerous weather. It was the second weather suspension of a tricky day for the field. When play resumed,

Haas, who was paired with son Bill in the team format at TPC Louisiana, had to make a nervous 4-foot, 5-inch par putt on the 18th hole to secure a 1-under 71 and 8-under total to make the weekend on the number. It sounds silly just to have a chance to make the cut. However, there’s a lot of circumstances here that it kind of made it doubly important in my mind,” Haas said after the round. “To somehow shake that putt in on the last hole was something I’ll never forget. He passed away on April 12th 2020. • The family home was near a nine-hole course and he was a self-taught golfer. • He was the last amateur to win on the PGA Tour until Scott Verplank in 1985. • He had thirteen top-ten finishes in major championships, including four second-place finishes. • He is remembered for an exceptionally short, flat golf swing — a consequence, it appears, of a painful neck condition that radically restricted his movements. • He was a member of the 1967 U.S. Ryder Cup team, which won in Houston. • He was a stylish, flamboyant dresser on the golf course, which earned him the nickname “Peacock of the Fairways.” Answer on page 104

AFFORDABLE GOLF - MPUMALANGA

Walkersons Hotel & Spa… and Golf… and so much more Walkersons Hotel & Spa built in 1993 is set in the rolling hills of the Mpumalanga highlands on the expansive 800-hectare Walkersons Private Estate, just beyond the picturesque hamlet of Dullstroom. It is known mostly for its stylish country charm. Its original owners inspired by the beauty of the countryside created a hotel with an old-world country atmosphere reminiscent of a Scottish Country Manor. They were very successful! Walkersons, now a haven of serenity and seclusion is a perfect blend of elegance and charm. It offers 27 tastefully appointed suites plus five self-catering family cottages dotted around the estate, large verandahs, elegant restaurants - The Flying Scotsman for superior dining and The Terrace for unpretentious country fare and light meals and lovely lawns leading to a hidden swimming pool. It is also famous for its fishing - the Dullstroom area’s fishing industry dates back to the early 1900s and fishermen have been flocking back there ever since - flyfishing is a favourite activity at Walkersons.

They can indulge in a spa treatment - the tranquil Walkersons Spa has an extensive menu with treatments provided by professional therapists - they can roam freely and explore the surroundings and enjoy its outdoor experiences, from walking along the footpaths, to hiking over the hills where the views are amazing and where they can get close to the estate’s wildlife, impala, zebra, blue wildebeest and blesbok or they can attempt to master the skill of flyfishing in one or more of the fourteen lakes and dams on the estate. Over the next few months the award-winning 5-star Walkersons Hotel & Spa is offering some really amazing discounts. If you’re able to escape midweek -Sunday to Thursday - you may want to take advantage of these discounts. Book now and you could get up to an amazing 50% off! Available from 1 May to 31 August 2022. Recipient of the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence awards from 2013 to 2018 and the Travellers Choice awards in 2019 and 2021, Walkersons Hotel & Spa, an easy drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, is ideal for exclusive weekend breaks, weddings and business conferences.

If, however, it’s a spot of golf you prefer, then for your golfing pleasure the Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate with its magnificent Ernie Els signature golf course, rated as one of the best in South Africa, is 30kms away.
