LE T TER TO THE EDITOR
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the editor I love my golf, but I cannot stand the game being played at the Olympics. The Olympics just don’t mean that much to the world’s best male golfers and despite some of them saying that it does, I don’t buy it.
Dear Steve Thank you for writing in however I must ask; did you actually watch the Olympic golf? We were treated to a seven-way playoff in the men’s competition and that
Even the format is stupid, four rounds of stroke play, which is boring and makes Olympic golf just like any PGA Tour event that’s missing some stars. Perhaps they could have tweaked the format so it was a genuine team event, but there really aren’t that many countries that could field competitive multi-golfer teams, and it still wouldn’t mean as much to fans or golfers as the Ryder Cup.
was for bronze.
Let’s face facts, every major golf event is an international competition, the sport isn’t big enough and golf, at the highest level, prints cash. The sport does not need the Olympics & the Olympics does not need golf.
Sure, some top players did not attend but
The role of the Olympics is not simply brilliance but spreading the word. I heard so many non-golfers talking about the playoff and how exciting it was and whilst it is always hard to quantify growth this can only have been a massive boost for the game. the fields for both the men and women were still very strong. We all have our preferences but for me, golf at the Olympics is something very special.

TUITION & INSTRUCTION
KNOW YOUR RULES RULE 18.2, THE TIME FOR A BALL SEARCH Limiting the search period to 3 minutes is more consistent with the underlying principle that golf is to be played in a prompt and continuous way, without long pauses in play. In most cases, if the ball is going to be found, it will be found within the first 3 minutes. Although this change may increase the number of lost balls, on average the overall impact should be to speed up play. Knowing that the search time is limited to 3 minutes should encourage players to play a provisional ball when they believe there is a chance their ball may not be found.

Performance Tip brought to you by Mark Fairbank – BSI Head of Performance Golf – Mental Coach
The Importance o D
uring my time working with elite athletes I regularly find players say things like, “I can’t putt”, or “I always start badly” or “I always choke under pressure”. I’ve experienced parents and students from the classroom perspective saying, “I can’t do maths” or “my child is not an academic”. These quotes are examples of a Fixed Mindset. This is the belief that one’s skills and qualities are carved in stone, that we are born a certain way, and with certain talents that predetermine how good we will become. These individuals, talented or not, almost always do not realise their potential. We rather need to instil a Growth Mindset into all individuals and athletes. This is the belief that all skills, qualities and abilities are trainable and can be cultivated through our own efforts in training. A great example is a Rubik’s cube, these are often seen as mythical objects that only geniuses can solve, majority of

of a Growth Mindset individuals wouldn’t even try because their Fixed Mindset beliefs prevent them from doing so and indoctrinate the belief that they are not smart enough. The reality is that you can just download an app that shows you exactly how to make each movement, and with enough time, you just need to memorise these movements and you are able to complete a Rubik’s cube and look like a genius. We must move away from using words like “She’s just talented” or “They are gifted” and rather encourage ourselves and our children to understand that everything is the culmination of hard work and the effort put in over time - Growth Mindset. No matter what it is, it can always be achieved with the right effort, motivation and intensity.
Mark has a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in Psychology, from UKZN and he also has a Bachelor of Psychology with Honours, majoring in Sports Psychology, from UNISA. Mark’s mental coaching is a combination of his psychology training and competitive experience on the IGT Pro Tour.

GOLFRSA SALUTES LATE SAGA PRESIDENT MARTIN SAAIMAN
G
olfRSA extends heartfelt condolences to Marti and the family and friends of the late South African Golf Association President Martin Saaiman, following his unexpected passing in August. “Martin was an enormous servant of the game, and he impacted many lives in his golf journey over the last 30 years,” said GolfRSA Chief Executive Officer Grant Hepburn. “It didn’t matter to Martin if he was attending a board meeting or cheering on his beloved Ekurhuleni Roses or his grandchildren – he brought the same level of enthusiasm and energy to everything in his life. We will miss his passion the most of all.”
From April 2016, Martin served as Junior Vice-President of the SAGA and Senior Vice-President from 2019. He became acting President in September 2020 when Naadir Agherdien was forced to step down in September 2020 due to health reasons and was elected President in April 2021. The former South African Police Service (SAPS) Human Resources Manager also served as the vice chairman of the SAPS Training Centre Golf Club from 1992. He was their representative at the Eastern Gauteng Golf Union from 2002 to 2004 and served as the chairman of the SAPS National Golf Body from 1992 to 1995.
Saaiman (59) served in golf administration for more than three decades, including 12 years as President of the Ekurhuleni Golf Union. He began representing Ekurhuleni Golf Union on the South African Golf Association’s National Executive Committee (SAGA NEC) in 2008 and was elected chairman of the Championship and Tournaments Committee a year later. In 2013 he was appointed as a
“Martin’s dedication and commitment to the furtherance of golf in South Africa was unquestionable,” said Hepburn. “We valued his guidance and leadership, especially over the last 18 months as we navigated golf through what has been undoubtedly the toughest battle we have ever faced in South Africa due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Golf has made a remarkably strong recovery in the last year, with more rounds being played and equipment sales booming.
activities seem to take 2 hours (bowls, tennis, gym) and one would think that in today’s world the time needed to play 18-holes is excessive. Rather play nine than do not play at all!
However, our lives are busier and more complex than ever. With work commitments the hours slip by and then we still need to fit in time with our children. Leisure time is precious, and the considerable portion of a day that an 18hole round often requires is not something everybody can afford.
It is a misconception that golfers who play 9 are beginners, 9-hole golf should be seen as a legitimate alternative and it is an experience that is as complete and as enjoyable as 18-holes. It is also consistent with the time honoured traditions of the game.
9-holes typically take 2 hours to complete and it makes sense to promote shorter rounds that golfers can fit into busy lifestyles. Most other recreational

In 1960 a group of 15 men from Citrusdal decided to build a golf course at the common ground known locally as the “Koeikamp.” The men toiled hard and succeeded to build a 4 hole-course, but after a number of years, the struggle and manpower to keep the 4 hole-course in shape, deteriorated and the course fell away. In 1975 another group got going at the “Koeikamp”
area again and they were successful to build 9 holes. In the early 1980s, the club's committee was granted the opportunity to buy the “Koeikamp” land and today, the club is the proud owners of the golf course property.

INTERESTING QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO 9-HOLE SCORES
M
ust I enter a nine-hole score for Handicap Index® purposes?
Yes. Players are obliged to enter all nine-hole scores into the GolfRSA Handicap System except in the following situations: a) When the score cannot be ratified by a playing partner or competitor b) When the types or number of clubs were limited (as in a competition in which only iron clubs were allowed)
e) When the course played is not officially rated including when a course is set up much longer or shorter than the Average Playing Length when the rating of the course was determined f ) When the player used non-conforming clubs, balls or tees, or with respect to Rule 14-3 (Rules of Golf ) where an artificial device was used in the execution of stroke or when equipment was used in an unusual manner during the execution of a stroke.
c) When the round played included the use of “Mulligans”
The 9-hole calculation will automatically be completed by the system by first converting your nine-hole score into an 18-hole score (by taking your Adjusted Gross Score for the nine holes you played, adding par for that nine, plus your handicap strokes for that nine, plus 1 additional stroke) before converting it into a differential using the Course®- and Slope Ratings® of the nine you played. Can I receive an ‘Exceptional’ round for a nine-hole score?
d) When more than one ball was used at a time
34
How are nine-hole scores applied to the Handicap Index® calculation?
Yes, you can.

1. Getting outdoors Being out and about in nature provides health benefits for our mind and body. Soaking up a few hours of sunlight (always remember your sunscreen) will help increase your Vitamin D levels. 2. It’s a great workout Playing a 9-hole round of golf (while carrying your bag) burns at least 450 calories, as you walk between two and four kilometres with a few kilograms strapped to your back. 3. You get together and make new friends Golf is a very social sport and a great way to connect with friends or meet new people –

4. It alleviates stress Playing a round of golf helps to release endorphins – those natural, mood-enhancing chemicals within our brains that make us happier and more relaxed. 5. You will get a better night’s sleep The exercise that you get during a round, from walking to swinging your club helps to tire your body out. You will fall asleep faster and sleep more profoundly due to the amount of energy expended.

MOOINOOI THE ONLY 9-HOLER TO HOST A SUNSHINE TOUR EVENT
M
ooinooi Golf Club is one of the finest ninehole facilities in the country and the only 9-hole golf course to have hosted a Sunshine Tour event (the Platinum Classic, for 18 consecutive years, 1996 to 2013). The course opened in 1974 and was originally known as the Westplats Golf Club. The 9-hole course layout was done by a Mr Magielse, who was in charge of the Turf Grass Research Station of the Witwatersrand University near Alexandria,
38
Johannesburg, in collaboration with John Pitchers. Pitchers was in his early sixties and ran the Rock Drill Workshop at Western Platinum Mine and being a keen golfer was asked to build the course by the General Manager, Andrew Saffy. The course was open to mine employees only with visitors being permitted to play by invitation of the General Manager. This rule was later rescinded with membership being open to all.
www.sagolftrader.co.za
Pitchers was a remarkable old man. His right leg was amputated just above his knee when he was in his early twenties after the jacks of a motor vehicle he was working under collapsed with the vehicle falling on him and crushing his leg. He had a false leg for forty odd years and still played off a 16 handicap. Quite an achievement, considering there were no golf carts available in those years.

(There is a sketch of him in the bar area of the clubhouse). Western Platinum Mine, with the escalation of platinum prices, started expanding with Eastern Platinum Mine opening and Karee Mine being purchased from Impala Platinum. Management decided to change the name of the club, as it was no longer representative of the Lonrho Mines, to Mooinooi Golf Club in 1988. (Most of the Lonrho employees resided in Mooinooi). The original greens were planted with cynodon grass (schaap-plaas) and in 2001 Mine Management wanted to expand the course to 18-holes, but were unsuccessful in negotiating the purchase of land adjacent to the course and then decided to rebuild the greens and to plant them with bent grass. JOHN COLLIER 2021
John Collier Survey NINE-HOLE GOLF CLUBS ARE THE BACKBONE OF SOUTH AFRICAN GOLF
I
f one reads any golf publication or even the general news media, these publications usually carry articles about top eighteen-hole golf courses hosting regular professional tour events. The exposure is there, continually, week in and week out, showcasing carefully manicured greens and fairways and beautiful views of blue lakes and green vegetation. In South Africa, taking into consideration our climatic conditions and the actual number of golfers playing the game, in reality the Augusta syndrome is beyond the reach of many golf clubs. From a media perspective it is important to maintain the narrative but in reality, more than 60% of golf courses in South Africa are nine-hole courses. Notwithstanding the hype, it is suggested that this is where the enthusiasm for the game starts and the place to grow the game. There are many advantages in playing a 9-hole course. For example, it saves time in that the average pace of play for nine holes is just under two and a half hours. It saves money in that many
September | October 2021
nine-hole rates are typically 50 percent or more discounted from the full round rate. It is easier on your body as playing nine holes allows you to get great exercise without overdoing it. It is a great way to start because it is not necessarily as taxing mentally and physically for those who are still trying to master the basics. Most importantly your scores still count so you can still submit your nine-hole scores if you are keeping a handicap. Furthermore, in terms of research carried out through the John Collier Survey many of the so-called big clubs could learn a great deal from these nine-hole courses in respect of environmental compliance and good governance. Good examples of these clubs include Hankey Golf Club in the Eastern Cape, Jagersfontein Golf Club in the Free State, Utrecht Country Club in Kwa Zulu Natal, Mooi Nooi Golf Club in the North West, Springbok in the Northern Cape and Chrome Golf Club in Mpumalanga.

GOLFRSA LAUNCHES THE COASTAL/ INLAND CHALLENGE GolfRSA has announced an exciting new team tournament for Mid-Amateur and Senior golfers. The GolfRSA Coastal/Inland Challenge comprises two teams of eight players, each made up of the region’s top four Mid-Amateur and Senior golfers and will be played at St Francis Links from 2 – 5 December. Adopting a Ryder Cup-style format, the event promises to be an exciting affair that pits the country’s best Senior and Mid-Amateur golfers against each other for a chance to be crowned inaugural champions.

“We recognise that international tournament golf has been severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic over the last 18 months and there has been little opportunity for our top players to test themselves against global opposition,” said GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn. “In the absence of the chance to earn national colours, we decided that the next best thing to keep the competitive fires of our elite Mid-Amateur and Senior players burning is to create an event where the country’s top players can test themselves

against each other on one of the country’s top layouts. “It also gives us the opportunity to recognise the individual achievements of our top players over the last 12 months. “As a team event, we believe that the GolfRSA Coastal/Inland Challenge will generate a lot of excitement and stimulate much interest as players look to play their way into their respective teams. “We are delighted to be able

St Francis Links will provide a stern test for the teams, but the match play format should encourage plenty of good scoring on this magnificent links layout.” Teams are due to be announced on 25th October, following the conclusion of the Senior Amateur Championship at Glendower Golf Club. The top four golfers on the Senior Ranking from each region will be selected to represent their region, while the Mid-Amateur players will be selected based on a player’s

With a number of events on the calendar between now and the cut-off date, players have a good opportunity to play themselves onto the teams. St Francis Links CEO Jeff Clause said, “We are privileged and excited to be the inaugural host for a new GolfRSA event. St Francis Links breathes for tournament play, matchplay in particular, as every hole will challenge and reward great shot-making. This will be an honour.” TEAMS Inland Unions: Central Gauteng, Gauteng North, Ekurhuleni,

At Oubaai this is the cornerstone of our belief. Home means something different to all, but a home should be a place that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. This is the underlying value that has created and grown Oubaai Golf Resort into the outstanding residential estate that it is today. Situated adjacent to Herolds Bay on the Garden Route, a mere 8 minutes from George Airport, this hidden gem is ideally located with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. Authentic is one of the first words that comes to mind when thinking about Oubaai, designed to blend in with the natural splendor of the Cape. The eco-friendly ethos has created a natural paradise – providing a haven to an array of wildlife. State of the art security systems offer complete peace of mind, enabling Oubaai residents to wander the expanse of the 546 hectare estate without a worry. The Ernie Els 18 hole Championship course is kept in mint condition and it is one of the most beautiful settings that can be seen anywhere in the golfing world. It was recently awarded 3rd best conditioned course in Southern Cape and 10th in South Africa. The layout of the course is a traditional links type layout where veld grasses line the manicured fairways. The course measures 6,516 meters from the pro tees, which is uniquely long for a coastal course.

The jewel of the Simbithi Country Club is undoubtedly the magnificent 18-hole golf course, designed by Peter Matkovich. Thoughtfully-placed greens that hold a well-struck shot, pristine fairways and a layout that allows you to play every club in your bag. South Africa’s first executive course, Simbithi has a par of 60 comprising par-3s, par-4s and one par 5. Each hole is intriguingly named after the area it occupied when Simbithi was once farmland.
Simbithi Country Club incorporates a selection of eateries, wedding and conference venues and, of course, the unparalleled 18-hole Executive Golf Course.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE
Errol Stewart SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKETER
1. Where were you born and what schools did you attend? I was born in Durban and did all my schooling in Westville - Westville Junior Primary, Westville Senior Primary and Westville Boys High School, matriculating in 1987. After school, I pursued a law degree at Natal University, Durban and qualified as an attorney, although I stopped practicing law in the late 90’s to join the financial services world. 2. Did you come from a sporting background? My mom, Shirley, played field hockey for South Africa from 1978 to 1980. My dad, Rae, played 1st division rugby for Berea Rovers. 3. You played most sports at school at provincial level, how did you manage to get to academics as well? Given how busy my days were, I had to get a good routine going, which I managed to do, sometimes ‘kicking and screaming’ if truth be told! Obviously mornings and lunchtimes were focussed exclusively on academics and afternoons on sport, so it was important for me to get the days homework done before lights out. Consequently, I’ve always studied at my best late afternoon into the early evening. My mom also made sure the studies didn’t get neglected…….
84
4. You also represented the Sharks (35 matches and the Dolphins 97 first class matches) at senior provincial level, when did you realize that cricket was the sport you want to take further? I witnessed serious injuries to fellow team mates Wayne Fyvie and Joos Joubert which made me think seriously about my rugby future. I felt I had a better chance of playing cricket for a longer period of time with the risk of injury also being greatly reduced. Of course there was my work career too. In a nutshell, playing both sports became unmanageable and untenable. 5. Winning both Currie Cups (Rugby and Cricket) in 1995 makes you one of a handful of sportsman to achieve this feat. This must have been one of your biggest highlights of your career? It was thrilling to achieve that feat, namely being part of Currie Cup winning teams in cricket and rugby in the same year and it certainly ranks as one of the highlights of my sporting career. 6. Who has been the most influential person in your cricket career ? The most influential people, in not only my cricket career but all my sport, are my parents.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE No-one comes close to the immensely positive effect that they had on me. 7. You are the new Chairman at Durban Country Club, what has been your biggest challenge ? Revenue, cash flow and cost management are critical elements of any business and the same is true at Durban CC. It’s pleasing to note that we’ve started winning on these fronts but you can never take your eye off the ball. Constant attention and focus is required. 8. South Africa is currently playing winning rugby, but it is branded as boring by many pundits, what are your thoughts on this ? I loved the British & Irish Lions series. I’m not sure what the naysayers were expecting other than a tough physical and mental battle between a gathering of many of the worlds premier players and in seriously trying circumstances. It was, therefore, never going to be free flowing but that’s test rugby. It was an enthralling series and, for me, edge of the seat stuff! As a team, the Boks are well coached,
G ETTING ON T O GOLF • When did you start playing golf? I took up golf in my teens, probably when I was 16. • What is your current handicap? As at the end August, my handicap index is 7.2. • Which is your favorite golf course and why ? Durban Country Club is my favourite golf course. Why? You can play 5 times in 5 days and have a varied experience each round. And you will love it whether you’re playing well or not-so-well. A beautiful environment, quality golf course and just a fine test of golf for all. • Have you had any embarrassing moments whilst playing golf? well prepared, generally clinical, design a game plan around their strengths and opponents weaknesses and make sure that each player understands his role in the team on and off the field. And they play for each other! If my facts are right, all our tries in the series were scored by our outside backs. Food for thought for the critics. And just look in the trophy cabinet. 9. You have your private pilots license, do you still manage to make time to fly? Since qualifying for my pilots licence back in 1992, I have always been current and kept my licence up to date. Flying is my absolute passion so I fly as often as I can. Generally speaking, that’s at least once a month, sometimes twice or more. 10. What advice would you give to youngsters today as far as sport is concerned? You can be successful and at the top of your game yet still be a good person adding positive value to society. ‘Respect’ is a word that should be at the forefront of your being. 1st tee at DCC for my tee time in a club competition, greeted everyone on the box (it was a busy day), teed it up at my supposed tee time, only to be told by the club captain, to great amusement, that I was off the 10th that day! It cost me in the pub afterwards…… • When you play, do you walk or take a cart? I always walk when I play and only take a cart when compelled to on cart-only courses. I also like to take a caddy. • If you could pick a golf swing, who’s would it be? I have followed Ernie Els’s career since he turned pro and have always loved the rhythm and simplicity of his swing. Effortless. • Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Still waiting for the elusive ace…… • • What would be your ideal fourball? My ideal fourball would be Roger Federer, Ernie Els and Brian Lara

VODACOM SUPPORTS SUNSHINE TOUR CADDIES WITH DONATION support all professional caddies approved by the Tour. The donation comes after Vodacom confirmed the return of the Vodacom Origins of Golf series to the Sunshine Tour’s schedule in 2021 and 2022 after it had to be postponed last year due to the Lockdown Level 5 restrictions. The five-tournament series teed off in August, with the final tournament set to be played in 2022 and with a total of R5 million in prize money on offer throughout the series. “As a result of the coronavirus pandemic we were unable to host the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series in 2020. We realise that this impacted heavily on the Sunshine Tour caddies across the country who rely on these tournaments to earn a living,” said William Mzimba, Vodacom Business Chief Officer.

odacom has once again thrown its full support behind South African professional golf with the anouncement of a significant donation to permnent Sunshine Tour caddies to help alleviate the economic pressures they have suffered during the corona virus pandemic and specifically the hard lockdown of professional golf in 2020. “Since its inception in 2004, the Vodacom Origins of Golf series has been strongly aligned to the communities where the tournaments are played and supporting charities as well as golf development initiatives. It is for this reason that, in partnership with the Sunshine Tour and events rights holders FLOOID, we have made this donation to a sector of the golf industry that is critical to all of our enjoyment of this game.” Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, said: “The Sunshine Tour is blessed to have sponsors and partners of the calibre of Vodacom, a company that has always supported the Tour and the greater golf family in South Africa. This is an incredible contribution to our efforts to assist our caddies financially.”

Great Grass comes from Great Care By: Sue de Zwart “Time is love” is not only true for our children, but our greens too. You need to know your greens intimately as most superintendents do. Experience is critical when growing grass. I recently had the privilege of attending a webinar with a USA superintendent, Rod Lingle, with 48 years turf experience – WOW he exudes passion for turf!
off the leaf as quickly as possibly by mowing, whipping poles or dragging a hose pipe. I am not a fan of opening sprinklers to remove dew.
A few key pointers I like to follow:
Mowers – walk with at least one mower each day to check the clipping volume – this helps you determine your PGR rate. We like to increase or decrease your Primo Maxx at 30ml/ha per week within your application rate window for your turf.
Daily Dew Check – this is where you pick up any early signs of disease. Remember to get your dew
Measuring your clippings from one green is a great tool, but it doesn’t replace your gut.

SPECIAL FEATURE - G R E AT G R A S S CO M E S F R O M G R E AT C A R E Height of cut – this is always a contentious issue. Don’t sacrifice your plant health by pushing your HOC too low. Rather do regular double cutting to gain your desired speed & ball roll – we typically mow until there are no clippings in the box. Moisture check – a thorough moisture check of all greens first thing in the morning is really important. You can touch up any areas needing water with a hose pipe & be ready for the day ahead. Anyone allowed to irrigate should have at least a hand held moisture meter. I like to avoid the guessing game wherever possible. Collars – you either love them or hate them. Remember if you have a collar – particularly in a tournament scenario it needs to be clearly visible to avoid ruling issues. I prefer no collar for a tour event, however they are a great tool for protecting your turf in the cooler months. We typically would raise the height by 0,25 mm weekly until you reach your desired height of 5-6mm & immediately start bringing them back down at 0,25 mm per week. This can be an ongoing process, however I prefer

no collar on cool season turf during the heat of summer. Slowly, slowly catch a monkey is the absolute key on so many elements of a green – particulary nutrition, verticutting & your PGR applications. A little more often does not gives you inconsistent spikes of growth & will give you a fantastic playing surface year round. Remember to base your nutrition programme on your soil tests (at least annually) as well as regular leaf sampling on your greens (at least every 3 months during the growing season). Being a superintendent is a demanding, but incredibly fulfilling career so we are reliant on the support of our families & teams. Delegating is a must and an awesome way to see your team move up through the ranks. Choose carefully what you do delegate though, as you need the best agronomist making turf related decisions. I personally prefer to delegate the admin side of the business & work closely with my team on the agronomics which is my passion after all. All the best for a fantastic season in grass & golf!
