WINNING LETTER To the Editor I came across an interesting article on Math the other day. The writer highlighted the negative connotation so prevalent in the attitude of 'former math students'. The author came to the conclusion that we make the learning experience positive so the long term attitudes to math will be rid of antagonism. Now golf is a very hard game and mastering it completely will never occur. Mathematics is much the same; infinite time would not guarantee that the finest student would ever understand all that could be known about it. Math learning is essentially a progression of skills to be learned and then built on at the next level. Successful initial learning should increase the likelihood of long term success so why the feedback as mentioned in the first paragraph? Golf instruction is essentially the same; skill-based learning broken down into various 'strands' of knowledge. Acquire the skills and master the game. Yet the average player is not any better then they were 80 years ago when the instruction was almost non existent.

The comparison is interesting; the contrast is remarkable. While we focus on testing the learning of one area in math at a time, the 'test' of golf involves the act of playing which means that all areas are part of the challenge. Many golfers will tell you that they were successful in one area and not so in another, i.e., ' I drove the ball well today but I could not buy a putt'. Always, the person begins with the positive and then accepts the area needing more attention. Golf seems to have developed a holistic approach that allows a person to believe that despite his current failures, the opportunity for success will be just around the corner. Many people create their own successes by changing their goal or 'par' to create an atmosphere where they can be successful. High school math courses that focused on interesting and challenging problem- solving opportunities and encompassed all the areas of mathematics would be an excellent opportunity to change the adult attitude to mathematics. Yours faithfully Terence Ryan

Dear Terence What an interesting comparison and how true it would seem. Accentuating the positive is always a good thing and if we could encourage students to look at not only math but all subjects in the manner that you mention then I can only see that being a good thing. Remember though that we strive to always break ‘par’! And that par for a course is set and can not be changed. Regards

Congratulations to Terence - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! March/April 2012

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE NEWS CLIP

Branden takes down Ernie, Retief for second consecutive European Tour Title Branden Grace won the €2-million Volvo Champions at The Links at Fancourt in the first hole of a sudden death playoff on Sunday to take his second European Tour title in just two weeks. He sank a three-footer for birdie on the 18th – after missing one of similar length in regulation play on the same hole – and then defeated Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, two icons of South African golf, as he became just the sixth player to win their first two European Tour events in back-to-backtournaments. And there was the small matter of beating two boyhood idols, too. “Just standing on the tee with Ernie and Retief was unbelievable on the playoff,” he said. There was a calm about me, the whole playoff hole actually. I think I was more nervous and more pumped up going down the last hole when I walked up the fairway.” Even though he wasn’t able to pull off his victory in regulation, he was aware of what he eventually achieved. “I’ve beaten Ernie and Retief in a playoff,” said Grace of his victory, “and I know that I can do it again.” The win also catapulted him into the ranks of golf ’s elite as he will move inside the top 100 in 10

the Official World Golf Rankings when they are released after the weekend’s action is over. That’s a huge climb from his 258th spot before he won last week’s Joburg Open. He started his final round so unimpressively, too: With a double-bogey on the third and a bogey to follow that up, it seemed as if his chances of winning – so good when he led by four at halfway – had evaporated as Els, Goosen, Charl Schwartzel and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts all made attempts to wrest the trophy from their opponents. But, in an exhibition of his new-found imperturbability, he birdied six and nine ahead of the turn, and then 12, 13 and 16 on his way in. After missing his birdie attempt on 18 www.sagolftrader.co.za

in regulation play it was down the 18th fairway for a second time in the final round. “I had said to my caddie Zac [Rasego] when we walked up the first time that I didn’t want to have to climb the hills again,” he said. But the 23-year-old set out for that second journey with Els, 42, and Goosen, 43, giving two of the greatest players South Africa has produced nearly 20 years in experience as well as age – and he played the hole much better than either of them. The enormity of the victory won’t sink in immediately, much as his win in Johannesburg didn’t. “I think I’ve just been running on emotion. I’ll keep playing and playing until I’m exhausted and until I find it’s time to take a break.” March/April 2012

Jbe ecstatic with Indian win Jbe Kruger pumped his fist as the final putt dropped at the Avantha Masters in India – after many close calls he had finally gotten the monkey off his back – he had won his first European Tour event.

As he headed down the 18th the 25-year-old held a two-stroke lead over playing partner Marcel Siem, but Kruger overcame the nerves to claim the €2-million tournament at DLF Golf and CC. “I’m very relieved to win for the first time,” said Kruger. “If you want to win you need to make putts on the final day and I did that today.” “It’s a big relief now that I’ve won but I think I needed all those second-placed finishes to be able to appreciate it. There was no pressure even when I made my only bogey of the day on the 17th,” said Kruger, “I felt that victory was inevitable when I got to the 14th hole. I knew that I had a good chance as I had a comfortable three-shot cushion then. I like to know what’s going on and I’m aware of the movements on the leaderboard.” The Bloemfontein local is yet to win in South Africa – his two Sunshine Tour victories were in Zambia and Zimbabwe – and the Indian win marks his third professional trophy outside of local borders. He finished fourth on the Asian Tour Order of Merit last year and learnt to deal with the travel between South Africa and the East, which clearly paid off in India. On the third day he shot a superb 66 to lead the field by one stroke as they headed into the final 18. Siem had a sniff at victory when Kruger’s second on 18 found trees to the left of the fairway, but the German put too much into the shot and it landed in a greenside bunker, relieving much pressure from Kruger. It was his first win in 38 appearances on the European Tour and, aside from the cheque, has given Kruger something very special – a winner’s confidence. 14

Tee it up in the Kruger Lowveld

In our last edition we visited the regions of Komatipoort & Malelane and the great combination of golf and wild. In this edition we continue the trend as we see what’s on offer in Nelspruit, White River and Hazyview (an area know as The Kruger Lowveld). Two major festivals take place in this region, namely the Big Five Easter Tournament (4th April to 8th April at the White River Country Cub) and the Jock of the Bushveld amateur tournament (7th May to 13th May at the Nelspruit Golf Club). Whilst on our travels we heard about a 9-hole course situated on the Escarpment. Between Machadodorp and Nelspruit and billed as a “mountain links”, Drakenzicht is a little piece of heaven and features as our cover picture and main article within this feature.

SPECIAL FEATURE – THE KRUGER LOWVELD

Drakenzicht “The Mountain Links” Golf Course

We were told that something special awaited us 60km out of Nelspruit on the Schoemanskloof road. So in great anticipation we left Nelspruit and after a half hours drive found the gravel road to the right and cautiously made our way 7km onto the top of the escarpment where we came upon Drakenzicht Mountain Links. The overwhelming beauty of the surroundings takes a while to comprehend and when you see the golf course blending into this landscape it is really impressive. When I stepped out of the car I felt a pleasing sense of solitude. We were then warmly greeted by course architect and developer Thys van den Hoven and his wife Marcelle. It was by now late afternoon so we jumped on a cart and Thys took us around the course, both Louis and I marvelling at how Thys has virtually single handedly built this course. But a “mountain links” where did that come from? Well back at the clubhouse over dinner and a glass or two of wine Thys gave us the background to this fascinating project. The 160ha farm on the Drakensberg Escarpment overlooking the Schoemanskloof valley was bought in February 2007. At the time sheep were kept on the property, but the presence of baboons, type of graze available and illnesses proved sheep farming not to be a sustainable option. The process of rezoning the farm from agriculture to business and tourism resulted in some environmental adjustments being made. All alien and invasive plants had to be removed. Large areas were covered with black wattle and blue gum trees and through a tedious process these trees were cut down and chopped up to supply the lodge with firewood. Areas infested with bug weeds, lantana, bramble and bracken ferns were cleared. This left huge areas that now needed rehabilitation. Together with the borrow pits and totally overgrazed sheep camps a big threat of erosion and re-infestation with alien invasive plants now existed. The idea of using these areas to establish some recreation on the lodge to make it sustainable over a long term came to the fore and was the first step in the establishment of a unique golf course. The natural landscape was kept as it is: areas of unspoilt grasslands, few to no trees and a misty, windy climate reminiscent to that of the Scottish coastline ... and hence the criteria of the links courses of Scotland were used to design the course. Almost no major earthworks were done. More than 95% of the course design was in the previously disturbed areas. Pot bunkers were also used where possible mainly to prevent the sand from blowing out of the bunkers. However Thys was well aware of the fact that this couldn’t be a true links course as it is 1400m above sea level. Thus the idea to label this as the first Mountain Links course in the world! With extraordinary views across the valley pictures do not do it full justice. The course is situated on the top of a mountain with the highest point on the course a full 120m higher above sea level than the lowest point. The signature hole with its drive across a gorge is a very testing 421m par 4 and a true stroke 1. Your tee shot on the 18th may well be the one with the most spectacular view. 18

SPECIAL FEATURE – THE KRUGER LOWVELD

The entire course can be seen from here and you have a fantastic view over the valley. The course totals a distance of 6120m par 71 and is a true test of golfing ability and course management. The course is a great mix of short, medium and long holes. Three of the par 4's could well be par 5's. Although only 9 holes, the front and back nine differ considerably in distance and angles to give the challenge of a true 18 hole championship course. All things being equal a player will probably use all his clubs during a round. Thys is to date the only player to record a sub 80 round on the course and invites all keen golfers to extend this list. The old farmhouse was used to create a truly historical feel to the clubhouse (similar to those of the links courses). The 5 self-catering chalets and lodge can sleep up to 22 people presently with plans to add 25 more units on the estate. Adjoining land has just been incorporated and the estate is now 250 hectares in size. Other facilities include tilapia fishing, mountain bike and walking paths with great 360 degree views and a swimming pool. We left early the next morning after a great nights rest and a delicious breakfast. The gravel road to Drakenzicht is quite rough so allow for some extra time but don’t let this deter you as this is a unique and rewarding golfing experience! March/April 2012

The Kruger Lowveld region of Mpumalanga is an ancient landscape framed by what is likely the oldest mountain range on Earth, preserving some of life’s earliest forms. One glance down from the rugged Klein Drakensberg Escarpment allows one to understand why the Panorma Route is so called.

Apart from breathtaking natural icons, this is also a place of historical and cultural significance. Iron Age trade routes and African traditions reach back across many centuries. Gold rushes at Pilgrims Rest and Barberton were precursors to the discovery of gold in Johannesburg. Steeped in the history of traditional cultures, pioneers and fortune seekers, visitors will encounter a contemporary Lowveld culture with a wealth of stories that inspire the senses and connect one to the land and its people. The Kruger Lowveld is also a place of easily reached frontiers where you can visit three countries in one day by road, or take a leisurely drive, because this is also a place for solitude, relaxation, self-discovery, and connecting with nature. The Kruger Lowveld region is a distinct, physical area of Mpumalanga Province that follows the boundaries of the Ehlanzeni District Municipality. This region is bordered by the towns of Komatipoort in the East, Lydenburg/Mashishing in the West, Barberton in the South, and Bushbuckridge in the North. eopard Creek has grown out of the vision of a banker and skills and expertise of one of the world’s great golfers. It is founded on the values of friendship, a common love of the game of golf and a shared reverence for nature. Drawing from the intricate wealth of nature, Leopard Creek is an unobtrusive part of that environment – blending, complementing and enhancing. Situated near Malelane in the heart of Mpumalanga, on the southern border of the Kruger National Park. The 360 hectare development is bordered to the north and the west by the picturesque Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park. Typical bushveld koppies overlook the course from the east, providing an ideal backdrop for a magnificent course. Innovative architectural and landscaping techniques ensure that the Leopard Creek golf course and living areas are naturally protected from animals,

while lakes and small streams have been diverted through the development to create scenic vistas and interesting golf strategies. Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek, for much of the water is home to the magnificent creatures for which the river is named, crocodiles. Extensive use has been made of water features and sightings of crocodile, hippo, antelope, buffalo and wild boar are commonplace, either on the course itself or in or next to the river running alongside several holes. The 505 meter par-five 13th is one of Leopard Creek’s most memorable holes. Here the green is right on the edge of the Crocodile River but 32 meters above the level of the water, offering magnificent views up the river and into the Kruger Park. Gary Player is especially proud of the parfive 18th with its island green and the par-four 9th with its peninsula green jutting out of the same body of water.

Golf participation in Europe 2011

While golf is not considered a bellwether for economic conditions in Europe, there is little doubt of the cause-and-effect link between the economy and the success of golf as a participation sport. The number of golfers in Europe has more than doubled in the past 25 years, buoyed by economic growth and the spread of the game to both developed and emerging economies. However, in 2011, European golf experienced its first fall in participation in more than two decades. Which countries lost golfers in 2011, and why? Which countries enjoyed golfing growth? This snapshot report of golf participation in Europe will provide an insight into recent trends across the region, based on available statistics.

Headline facts • After more than 20 years of growth, Europe’s golf market experienced the first decline in golf participation, with a net loss of 46,000 registered players in 2011. • Nine countries experienced a decline in the number of registered golfers, but the most significant falls were in three large golf markets: UK & Ireland 42,700 (-3.1%), where the number of golfers has been falling since 2007, Sweden -21,000 (-4.1%) and Spain 9,700 (-2.9%). • Some countries have counterbalanced Europe’s overall decline in golf participation: Germany +10,800 (1.8%), the Netherlands +7,600 (2.2%), Finland +4,600 (3.6%) and Eastern Europe’s most established golf market, the Czech Republic +3,500 (7.6%). • Despite their potential, the growth in demand for golf in Eastern European countries was insignificant, in absolute terms, in 2011. • German-speaking countries1 and the Netherlands, remain flagship markets for female participation, with more than 30% of players being women. Female participation is also high in 40

Development of golf participation in Europe At the end of 2011, there were a total of 6,740 golf courses and nearly 4.4 million registered players in Europe, resulting in an average participation rate of 0.73% (based on a total population of 600 million)2. Following dynamic growth (6% per year) since the 1980’s, and a modest increase (1-2%) in the last five years, Europe’s golf market entered a downturn in 2011. While the number of golf courses has remained stagnant, participation in the game started to decrease, resulting in a net loss of 46,000 registered golfers last year. It is generally believed that the stagnation of Europe’s golf market can be attributed to two principal factors: • Significant decrease in registered golfers in some of Europe’s largest golf markets, notably the UK & Ireland; • Lack of dynamic growth in Europe’s emerging markets (e.g. Eastern Europe and the South-East Mediterranean). It should be highlighted however that in the UK & Ireland golfers do not need to be registered to play, and, as such, the reduction of registered players could be attributed to cancellations of club memberships. Many of these socalled “casual golfers” continue to play the game on a green-fee (daily pay-and-play fee) basis, on which there aren’t any accurate statistics available. As such, although the significant drop in registered golfers is a clear indication of decreasing demand, it is harder to measure the impact on the number of rounds.

While in absolute terms this represents only a few thousand young players, this is a potentially important factor in the future development of the game in these countries. • No countries experienced a significant Source: EGA and local golf federations with KPMG elaboration growth ingolf supply, but some new courses opened in Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Poland, for example. Distribution of demand in Europe:

Supply and demand characteristics in 2011 The golf market in Europe remains concentrated, with 92% of all golfers and 90% of courses focused in only 10 countries. The UK & Ireland alone have the highest share of demand in Europe with 30% of players and the highest share of supply with 44% of courses. The following maps indicate the maturity Distribution of supply in Europe: of Europe’s golf markets, according to the size of population per golf course, and the proportion of the population playing golf.

In recent years golf supply and demand has been relatively stable in most European countries, resulting in little change in market maturity. The UK and Ireland remain Europe’s most mature markets, along with the Nordic countries. In fact, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Finland and Norway have Source: EGA, local golf federations and Eurostat, the highest participation rates in Europe, paralleled with a strong supply relative to the population size. with KPMG elaboration March/April 2012

Women and junior golfers make up 25% and 10% of the total, respectively. While total female registrations have been decreasing across Europe in 2011 by about 2%, Germany, Switzerland, Finland and the Czech Republic managed to notably increase the number of their female golfers – Germany by more than 5,700, and the latter three by 1,000-1,400 each. German-speaking countries and the Netherlands remain the flagship markets for female participation, with more than 30% of their players being women. SPECIAL FEATURE – GHOLFBANE: GROEN OASIS OF GROEN WOESTYN

D

UK drought highlights water usage An emergency ‘Drought Summit’, called this week by the government’s land resources agency, Defra, has highlighted the perilous state of the UK’s water reserves. Large parts of England are already experiencing drought conditions, with forecasters warning that it is likely to continue into the summer. For turf managers in much of England, especially the south, there is the very real prospect of water restrictions on irrigation resources. Many golf courses have already had restrictions imposed on existing abstraction licenses that would normally now be filling reservoirs ready for the summer. Water companies in affected areas are now expected to file for emergency drought orders and drought permits that will impose further restrictions on water use. NEWS CLIP

Golf Datatech Releases Serious Golfers and Modern Media Study Key findings in the Serious Golfers and Modern Media Study include the following: • The two major U.S.monthly magazines Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have the strongest readership among printed publications; however, they are read less frequently than they were one year ago. • Although it remains in its infancy, digital delivery of golf information is the fastest growing method of distribution. • Facebook is the most widely used social networking tool by serious golfers, with 30% saying they visit daily and 49% reporting they visit at least weekly. Findings reveal social media consumption is skewed towards younger golfers. • 82% of respondents watch the Golf Channel at least once a week, and golfchannel.com leads PGAtour.com, golfdigest.com and golf.com as the most popular golf websites. 54

Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point supports responsible tourism It started with the Cape Town Declaration of 2002 - when delegates from all over the world came together to commit themselves to making tourism responsible both for its actions and to the people it affects - and now the concept of responsible tourism has entered the mainstream.

I

t’s one of the most talked about subjects on social media, and the general consensus is that it’s best for everyone.

is the only refreshment station along the way, we’re delighted to be able to offer them the use of our facilities, restaurant and bar.

But more importantly, it’s good for local communities and for the environment.

“As every golfer knows, walking is the best way to discover an area, and the St Blaize Trail surely lives up to that expectation since the fynbos at Pinnacle Point is in absolutely pristine condition, and the property offers brilliant opportunities for seeing whales, dolphins and birds like the rare African black oystercatcher in the marine environment that borders the estate.

“The concept is actually quite easy,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “Responsible tourism is defined as ‘tourism that creates better places for people to live and better places to visit.’” According to Bertu Nel, the manager of golf at Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point, it’s a principle that’s very close to the hearts of the members of the Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort’s Homeowner’s Association. “It’s important for us to have good relations with the people of Mossel Bay, and with visitors to the town - especially since the golf course is also the focal point of the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project, which has discovered the earliest evidence for modern human behaviour right here in the caves in the cliffs under the course. “The Archaeology has reignited interest in the beautiful St Blaize Trail, which follows a contour path along the cliffs, and takes walkers from Cape St Blaize to Dana Bay - and since the club house 56

“With the course in beautiful condition at this time of year, and the whale season (which coincides with the best flowering time for the fynbos) fast approaching - isn’t it time you played Pinnacle Point?” asked Mr. Nel. General Manager of the Homeowner’s Association, Carl van der Linde, said that the Association (a Section 21, not-for profit organisation) recently took ownership of the golf club, the course, the clubhouse, and related facilities, and that nonmembers are welcome to play whenever slots are available. Turkey is still experiencing junior growth from the ”Golf Junior League“ initiative, having added more than 900 golfers since the programme was introduced in 2009.

Key initiatives across Europe • Grow the Game of Golf is an initiative set up in conjunction with a number of organisations including the EGCOA, The European Tour, and the EGIA with the common goal of inspiring and encouraging golf clubs and associations to help grow the game from a grass roots level. They advertise many initiatives from national and local bodies which have proved successful, indicating the need for structure and support to develop the sport from a participation perspective. • Clubgolf is a government-backed initiative to give every child in Scotland the chance to play golf following the country’s successful 2014 Ryder Cup bid. One hundred forty thousand juniors have already been introduced to the concept. • Germany is a leading example in encouraging women to play, allowing higher handicaps (a maximum of 54). • In the Netherlands, Kids4Golf is a non-profit organisation aimed at 8-12 year-olds, providing fun golf events in public recreation areas, with special balls and child friendly hole-lengths. • Again in the Netherlands, Fun Factories is for children aged 5-12 years, with 10-15 events held annually. Established in 2002, there are now 50 participants at each event, on average. • Slovenia Plays Golf is a package deal the Slovenian Golf Association is running, where EUR 99 enables a player to acquire a licence and a 54-handicap. The scheme started in April 2011 and there are currently 1,800 players enrolled, from which 1,000 are projected to become full club members. Continued on p62

What’s next for golf in Europe? hile we expect 2012 to remain a tough year for Europe’s golf market, a recovery in the Eurozone and an overall upswing in the world economy would play an important part in the uptake of golf by new and returning players. However, the timing and nature of such a recovery is obviously difficult to forecast.

W

A future project set to be rolled out in 2012 is a new concept with the English Golf Partnership encouraging adults to start playing quick, social golf with rounds lasting no longer than 60 minutes. While these are all positive examples, the lack of proper promotion often hinders the success of such initiatives.

Some of the countries where golf continued to grow in 2011 – notably, Germany and Finland – have benefited from relatively resilient economies, given the scale of the economic downturn across Europe, and enduring uncertainties. These countries remain well positioned to see a growth in both numbers of players and, to a lesser extent, courses.

In Wales, the Ryder Cup Legacy has put significant effort into growing the youth game, which saw peaks in 2008. But, just two years after the Ryder Cup, there is a call for continued support and investment in fresh and new initiatives to turn around the recent reduction of junior players.

Where golf had previously been tipped to grow significantly was the emerging markets of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Despite the Czech Republic’s impressive growth figures (7.6% increase in the number of players to nearly 50,000, and seven new courses), demand and course development has slowed down across the region. However, based on our survey of industry experts, expectations for the CEE – as well as the Mediterranean region – remain high, following a recovery from the economic downturn. Once again, the timing is hard to predict. There is no doubt the apparent drop-off in the number of registered golfers in Europe’s largest golf market, the UK and Ireland, was significant in 2011, and follows an ongoing trend. However, it is difficult to determine how much of this is as a result of golfers giving up club memberships in favour of playing golf on a casual or daily fee basis, or giving up the sport altogether. (Unlike other European countries, golfers in the UK and Ireland don’t have to be registered.) There are several initiatives aiming to offset this negative trend. For example, the Over 45’s Project is a local scheme that has been running in conjunction with England Golf to involve people aged over 45 as part of a fitness and social concept. Significant funds have been allocated for this initiative between 2009 and 2013. 62

While much of the golf market stagnation in Europe may be attributed to the overall economic climate, continued support and investment in new programmes will be needed to sustain demand and generate further growth in the game, especially in mature and developed golf markets. Golf clubs need to proactively and effectively face up to the challenging economic climate to retain members or attract new golfers. Based on our survey, rather than introducing youth and family promotional programmes, 30-40% of Europe’s operators and club managers actually increased prices in 2011. On the other hand, more than half of clubs have not enhanced marketing efforts – and (somewhat surprisingly) many have not yet capitalised on the opportunities provided by online marketing and social media. Today, there is a need for joint efforts by industry stakeholders – arguably more so now than at any time in the past two decades. Therefore, whatever aspect of the industry you represent, we invite you to share your thoughts, best practices and creative ideas on www.golfbusinesscommunity.com. Cool hand Porteous closes out for SA Stroke Play title Despite coming under intense pressure from Italy’s Andrea Bolognesi, South Africa’s Haydn Porteous was the coolest man at the final hole at Glendower Golf Club as he closed out the South African Stroke Play Championship with a even-par 72 last month. He delivered the shot of the tournament at the par-five 15th, where he pulled off a magnificent flop shot to match Bolognesi’s birdie.

The 17-year-old surrendered a three shot lead to the Italian after a bogey at the 12th and a double at the 13th – his Achilles Heel through four rounds. But Porteous showed incredible resilience to reel off two birdies in his final four holes and win one of the most prestigious titles on the amateur circuit. His winning score was eight-under-par 280, one stroke better than the Italian, who closed with a 74. “Words can’t explain how I feel,” said the emotional winner, who dedicated the victory to his good friend and 2011 winner, Jared Harvey. “My body is shaking and I don’t know if I want to laugh or cry. This has just been one of most unbelievable moments of my life. You don’t really know what to do, except smile. After Jared won last year, he challenged me and I swore I would win this for him. “I can’t wait to get him on the phone to tell him I pulled it off.” Porteous, playing with Bolognesi and Musi Nethunzwi in the final group, began his title charge one shot behind the Italian and one ahead of a chasing pack including Nethunzwi, Brandon Stone, Desne van den Bergh, as well as Toby Tree from England. After seven steady pars, he birdied the eighth and hit the front, putting three shots between himself and Bolognesi, Van den Bergh and Filippo Bergamaschi of Italy. 68

“I watched Musi hit it in the water on 12, so I went right and ended up under the trees,” he said. “I had to chip out and ended up making a bogey and it was a two-shot swing when Bolognesi birdied the hole. He is an incredible competitor under pressure and I knew I would have to birdie 13 to catch up to him.” But the 13th has been a problem for Porteous all week. “I haven’t been able to make anything happen at that hole. I had no confidence standing on the tee. It was probably the most conservative that I’ve played the hole all week. “But I found the water yet again. That was the third successive time this week. Double bogey, five over for that hole this week; it’s just not right. I told Mike, the head greenkeeper, they should dig up that hole and make it a par three.” The country’s number two amateur knew he would have to make a few birdies coming home to put pressure on the Italian. www.sagolftrader.co.za

“That was the best flop shot of my life,” said Porteous. “I was 30 metres out with no green to work with but it came out perfectly and finished about three foot from the hole. At the par-three, the 17th, I knew I had to sink an eight-footer when Bolognesi bogeyed and I drilled it in. “I went into the 18th with a lot of hope. I hit my tee shot exactly where I wanted to, just to the right of the middle of the fairway. That put the pressure I needed on Bolognesi. The Italian pushed his approach over the pin, leaving himself with a 20-foot downhill putt which he rolled six foot past. “Mine was below the pin, about 20-feet and I hit the lip and rolled to about a foot and a half. I knew he would have a tough second putt, All I could do was wait to see what Bolognesi would do and when he missed the putt by a couple of feet, I knew I only had the tap in to win. “I was so relieved when that putt dropped, I didn’t know what to do for about 10 second. I have to say, though, I feel a bit sorry for Bolognesi – he’s a solid golfer and it would have been a really good play-off had he parred the last.” March/April 2012

Weinstein stuns at Glacier Junior Series When she was younger, boys would often taunt Lara Weinstein on the golf course. They would tell her to “be a good girl, to go home and play with her dolls and leave golf to the professionals.” Play and Stroke Play).

But after pulling off the most extraordinary victory at the Glacier Junior Series at Ebotse CC in Benoni last month, no-one will dare to send this petite 17year-old home again.

She represented South Africa in Jakarta at 2008 World Junior Championships u/13 -14 girls and was awarded a golf scholarship to the Holy Rosary High School, where she is completing matric.

A force on the Women’s SA Golf circuit for some years, Weinstein underlined her growing stature when she outplayed 36 junior boys to become the first female finalist in the series sponsored by Glacier by Sanlam since it launched in 2010.

In 2010, Weinstein was selected for a third year running to represent South Africa at the World Junior Championships and made the SA Junior Team that competed at the Harder German Junior Masters and the Girls British Open Amateur Championships. She also won the Nomads SA Girls U16 Championship and Hex City Albatross Invitational in India and had five top-10 finishes in Provincial Women's Championships.

The teenager from Dowerglen in Edenvale booked her spot in the elite winners-only field for the Series Final later this year when she claimed the Dave Usendorff Tournament with a one-under-par 71 to win by one stroke from nearest rival, Phillip Kruse, and two shots former finalist Keegan de Lange and Arno Muller. Weinstein proved her worth against the boys before when she became the first girl ever to win the Glendower Junior Club Championships in 2009. She is no stranger to the winner’s circle and could very well deliver another surprise at the Final. Weinstein will tee it up in the Final, where she will compete with the other Glacier Junior Series Winners for an all-expenses paid trip to the Orange Bowl Junior Invitational in the United States in December. “The Orange Bowl is the biggest, most prestigious junior golf tournament in the world. March/April 2012

Along with various international appearances, Weinstein added the WP U-18 Championship, the Limpopo Ladies Amateur, KZN Botswana Ladies Amateur and Botswana Ladies Amateur to her impressive resume. The Glacier Junior Series is the only junior initiative that offers such an incredible incentive and this is my last chance to qualify and compete at the Orange Bowl. I definitely want to win and earn that trip.”

“Although I’m already guaranteed a spot in the final, I am certainly going to try to play more of the Glacier events when they don’t conflict with the Woman’s Golf SA calendar,” she said.

In 2006, she won the Oddesey World Putting Championship and in 2007, visited the podium six times, including a double victory in the KwaZulu Natal Ladies' Championships (Match

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

I have on many an occasion seen a reverse pivot, hip slide, poor shoulder turn, weight transfer or a host of other technical deficiencies linked to instability in the lower legs. You may initially struggle to do the exercise recommended by KeNako’s Biokineticist below, but work at it and you may well find that your golf technique and scores start improving! Try doing this exercise 3 times per week – it can be done in the comfort of your home or office. An exercise to improve stability and proprioception in the ankles and lower legs: 1. Stand, balancing on one leg. 2. Go down into a mini Squat. 3. As you come back up to full knee extension, bring the opposite knee up and across. 4. Lower the knee and go back down into the mini Squat. 5. Maintain your balance, carrying full body weight on one leg for 20 repetitions, before putting the other foot down on the ground. 6. The foot you are standing on should not be allowed to shift during this exercise. Do 3 sets of 20 rep’s on each leg! This exercise will improve the strength of your lower leg stabilizer muscles, resulting in greater ability to transfer weight from one leg to the other in your golf swing. Sukkel met my swaai? Sethoue wil nie val nie! My kap werk is nie goed nie! Kry nie die bal in die lug nie! “Fade” te veel? Klink dit bekend?

M

Geniet dit daar buite op die gholfbaan, en onthou, iemand het destyds gese: “The harder I practice, the luckier I get” Maar jy gaan nie beter raak as jy aan jou ou foute werk nie. Focus on Fundamentals This is not a trick question – if you build a house on sand and another one on a solid rock, which house is going to withstand a heavy storm the best? Easy answer, the house built on a rock, the one with a solid foundation. Let’s take Ernie Els and Jim Furyk for example their golf swings have nothing in common, but both of them apply good fundamentals (that I can promise you!!). Our focus is going to be on the fundamentals which are generally viewed from down the line. They are: posture, alignment and aim. Mareli Joubert Tuks Golf Academy Elite Coach: Centurion CC

Posture

1

Golf is one of the only sports where the ball is stationary. In tennis or cricket, you sometimes only have a split second to position your body in the best possible way to achieve the desired result. With golf, time is on your side so use it wisely! When you think of posture, you need to think of being in a ‘ready’ position. A good vision to have is that of a soccer goalie preparing to save a goal – I can bet you he’s not standing with straight legs and hunched over shoulders (pic 1)! Always make sure that your knees are slightly bent (like when you land on your feet after you have jumped over an obstacle). Create a nice angle between your hips and upper body by bending over from the waist and NOT dropping the head which will lead to a rounded upper back. (pic 2)

KIDS STUFF

Alignment Alignment is a very important fundamental in the game of golf. More often than not, alignment and aim are confused. Alignment involves the positioning of the body. This includes everything that you have two off: two feet, two knees, two hip bones and two shoulders that need to be positioned in relation to one another (pic 3), not like in picture 4!

3 4

The best way to think of alignment is thinking of railway tracks. Looking down the line, your feet will be on the left track and your club on the right track (the right track represents your ball to target line as shown in pic 5). It is of vital importance to make sure that when you practice, you are able to constantly check yourself by either placing a club or an alignment stick on the ground (pic 3). This will assist in practicing good alignment so that you can step onto the golf course with lots of confidence! Another good way to groove good alignment is by practicing your alignment in the mirror – this is awesome, immediate feedback as to how your body is aligned!

5

Aim

Aim involves the positioning of the club face, which is essentially the most important part as you strike the ball with the club face. The biggest mistake most golfers make is ‘aiming’ their body directly at the target, not taking into account that the club face then will be aiming a couple of fairways to the right!! As seen in picture 6, the club face is perpendicular (or square) to the intended ball to target line. You always want to get the feeling that if there was a mirror on your club face, it will reflect your intended target! In picture 7, we can clearly see that the club face is closed (aiming left) of the intended target. To simplify, if you are playing paint ball or shooting with a ‘kettie’ and you want to strike a specific target, but you are aiming at the tree next to the target…good luck to the tree!

6

7

Have fun practicing and playing!

Sanlam Cancer Challenge celebrates 20th Anniversary and a place in SA Golf Hall of Fame The Sanlam Cancer Challenge celebrates its 20th Anniversary as South Africa’s biggest charitable sporting event this year, earning it a place in the South African Golf Hall of Fame. The nationwide amateur tournament, which last year drew 37 000 golfers from 800 club qualifying competitions, annually raises millions of rands for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Since its inception in 1993 it has raised over R26 million for CANSA to assist with research into the disease and the treatment thereof. “For the past 20 years we’ve been proud to support CANSA, with the help of thousands of golfers around South Africa. With this being such a significant year for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge and for CANSA as an organisation, we’re hoping we can raise a record amount in 2012,” said Gary van Loggerenberg, Sanlam Sponsorship Manager. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge’s significant status in South African golf will be recognised in the South African Golf Hall of Fame at the Oubaai Golf Estate near George, where the tournament will be permanently showcased. With 2012 also marking the 80th anniversary of CANSA, this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge is expected to be one of the most memorable in its history. Golfers will register for the 2012 Sanlam Cancer Challenge in February, followed by the nationwide club competitions from March to July, the Regional Finals from August to September, and culminating in the Finals at Sun City on both the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Club courses in October. Sunshine Tour supports SA golf development through Big Easy Tour The South African Golf Association (SAGA) has welcomed a groundbreaking initiative from the Sunshine Tour to offer the country’s leading amateurs the chance to test the waters on the professional circuit during this year’s Sunshine Big Easy Tour. “The Sunshine Tour has afforded 40 amateurs the opportunity to compete on the professional circuit this year,” said SAGA president Colin Burger. “One player each from the SAGA, SAGDB, Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation and the SAGA Junior Golf will be given a spot to tee it up in each of the 10 tournaments that make up the 2012 Big Easy Tour. “This translates to 40 playing opportunities for our leading amateurs to gain invaluable experience and 84

test themselves against the professionals. It will also afford them the chance to gain invaluable insight into the pressures lying ahead when they join the paid ranks.” Burger said this opportunity follows a determined effort between the SAGA and the Sunshine Tour over the last 18 months to bridge the traditional divide between the amateur and professional ranks in South Africa. “There exists a much better understanding between ourselves and the Sunshine Tour these days and this step forward is a direct result of the improved relationship between our organisations. I believe this announcement will even further strengthen the relationship between us.” Selwyn Nathan, Chief Executive of the Sunshine Tour, echoed Burger’s sentiments, saying that the Sunshine Tour sees this as a major step forward in developing golf in South Africa. “The SAGA, in turn, feed their amateurs onto the Sunshine Tour. In the past, the view was held that the amateur ranks lost players when they joined the pro circuit, when in fact, it is exactly the opposite. Stonehage Chief Executive Officer, Giuseppe Ciucci, welcomed the inclusion of the country’s top amateur golfers to compete alongside professionals in a series that is aimed to offer a wider cross section of professionals the chance to play in competitive professional events. Burger said that the SAGA wished to give different amateurs the chance to compete, but the selection criteria still needed some refinement. “There is no doubt that this is a fantastic initiative. The chance to compete on a professional level affords the amateurs the chance to assess the state of their games and encourages an informed decision about their future in golf.”
