PGA NEWS PGA launches Grow Golf
Coaches Association
At the recent Telkom PGA championships Telkom Business and the PGA of SA joined forces to give school children the opportunity to experience golf in a fun and exciting way. Children from schools across Gauteng were invited to participate in a Grow Golf Zone which included a Long Term Athlete Development Cyclone, Instruction nets and mini golf course. The Cyclone encapsulates the LTAD philosophy where children have fun, improve their “physical literacy� and learn the basics of golf. Children in small groups traverse a circuit of golf specific and more general physical literacy exercises that teach the various skills needed for the game. A PGA pro and trainee from the Golf School of Excellence supervised each group on the Cyclone, and kids enjoyed a free giveaway pack in a safe area. There was a jumping castle and live broadcasts from Radio Jacaranda added to the vibe. Children also went down to the course and saw the big boys in action. Many teachers attended with their parents and there was in information centre promoting the Level 1 course and the Grow Golf Coaches Association. The PGA has recognized the need for Level 1 coaches to introduce children to golf at schools. A Level 1 course has been created that teaches junior coaches how to coach golf in a way that is both user friendly, makes golf fun for kids and gives kids maximum benefit. The Grow Golf Coaches Association has been created to provide Level 1 qualified coaches with resources, support and a structured communication system to facilitate schools interaction . WINNING LETTER Dear Editor Watching left handed Bubba Watson win the Masters reminded me of what initially sparked my love for the game of golf. For it was many, many years ago when that I happened to watch the Masters on TV.I was 9 years old and no one in my family played golf but my dad watched all sports. I had been playing outside that day (probably cricket or rugby) and when I came in that afternoon my dad had fallen asleep in his chair watching the Masters. I sat down and started watching these chaps hit a little white ball what seemed like a mile compared to a cricket ball! For whatever reason I knew right then I had to play this game. I had found a golf ball in an open veld where we normally played. A neighbour use to hit balls there so we would find one every once in awhile. Before that fateful day that I watched the Masters a golf ball was just a funny looking ball that we would bounce really high on the road. I needed a club so I took a block of wood about 20 cm long and a old croquet handle and
mounted them together, got out the lawnmower and cut a small area a little shorter than the rest of the garden and put in a tin can. I came up with a couple different tee areas from all over the garden and I played to that hole all year long. Every waking moment I would be out there playing my version of golf! Initially my parents thought this was a fad that I would get tired of but as that year went by I spent more and more time at it. I found out years later that my mother had eventually gone to my father and told him "you have to get that child a set of golf clubs because this is more than just a passing phase". My dad found a used set in the local newspaper and the following summer he got me my first junior membership. Three years later my father and younger brother started playing and we obtained a family membership. Golf has been a part of my life and my entire family’s lives ever since that fateful Masters Sunday in 1975 when Jack Nicklaus took the green jacket. Kind regards Mungo West

Land dispute threatens Olympic golf course SAO PAULO – A land dispute is threatening construction of the golf course for the 2016 Summer Games, when the sport is to be played at the Olympics for the first time since 1904. City officials might have to find a new site, meaning the project would start from scratch and possibly not be ready on time for test events in 2015. The city said in response to The Associated Press that it recently became aware of the situation and is "evaluating the measures it will take." Local organizers had considered using existing golf courses in Rio, but eventually decided to build a new one because the renovation projects would likely be too complex and expensive. The Rio 2016 committee wants the venue to become a legacy to the city and serve as a tool for bettering youngsters through sports. It will be used as a public facility after the 2016 Games. Hermanus: A whale of a time! Situated on the Cape South Coast, Hermanus is a charismatic fishing village famous for the whales that come here annually to calve. The Climate is generally mild – seldom reaching exceptionally low or high temperatures. Hermanus is a winter-rainfall area, and summer is usually sunny and dry. The champagne air makes for idyllic weather conditions in early autumn (March to April). Average temperatures: summer 26, 4’C; winter 14’C. Upon entering Hermanus, it’s an excellent idea to drive up Rotary Driveway for a bird’s eye view of the whole area. Birding is also popular in the area, and the Middlevlei Nature reserve offers unique sightings of rare migratory birds. The Pink Flamingoes and Sterns come in their hundreds to this area, and the rare Oyster catchers nest on the secluded dunes. There are even wild horses in the area surrounding the Bot River lagoon – up to the Rooisand Nature reserve. Hermanus offers a good home-base for touring the fascinating towns which form part of the Overstrand area, from Gansbaai to Rooi-Els. The area boasts the famous Big Five Marine animals: whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and penguins. Hermanus offers an incomparable all-round holiday experience – for local, national and international tourists. Don’t miss out on this!

Southern Right Whales These stately creatures are extremely intelligent, graceful and majestic. For eons they have travelled the seas singing their whale songs and danced to the beat of the waves. Mothers form close relationships with their young, who start suckling from birth until about one year of age. As mammals, they are born with a fine sprinkling of hair which through the years mostly disappear. Whaling started in Norway, some 5000 years ago, with the Southern Right Whales making easy targets by ruthless hunters. These beautiful animals are slow swimmers and float when killed, thus making them the “Right Whale” to hunt. Even though commercial whaling has been banned for more than 20 years, people continue to fire harpoons into these gentle creatures, causing many species to be endangered. The Southern Right Whale is conservation dependent with about 3000 in the sea to date.
LIFESPAN The lifespan of the Southern Right whale is estimated to be 90 - 100 years.
REPRODUCTION The gestation period is about 12 months and the calf is born tail first. The newborn is helped to the surface of the ocean by its mother to take its first breath, and after thirty minutes has learned to swim. The calf and mother spend the first year together, with the baby living off its mother's milk. Whales breed in warmer waters and females usually have one calf every 1-3 years.
BREACHING When a whale leaps out of the water, sometimes twirling around, it is called breaching. This action may be done purely for play, or may be used to loosen skin parasites and other irritations the whale might have. Breaching is also believed to be a means of communication with other whales and is usually done in sets of between four and six. May/June 2012

European Tour swings into Shanghai Golf ’s European Tour has expanded its presence in Asia by adding the lucrative Shanghai Masters tournament to its calendar, with the agreement including a deal for BMW to take up the title sponsorship of the event. Golf ’s European Tour has expanded its presence in Asia by adding the lucrative Shanghai Masters tournament to its calendar, with the agreement including a deal for BMW to take up the title sponsorship of the event. The announcement was made by the European Tour, China Golf Association and BMW last month. Last year's maiden event at the new Lake Malaren Golf Club was not sanctioned by a major tour, but this deal will allow the inaugural US$7 million BMW Masters to take place from October 25-28. The BMW Masters will bring the total number of tournaments on the European Tour’s 2012 Race to Dubai to 47 and represent the third on mainland China this year. After the Majors, World Golf Championships and the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, the BMW Masters will be the most lucrative event on the Tour. Last year’s inaugural event saw Rory McIlroy walk away with a $2 million winner’s cheque, the richest first prize in golf. As well as the BMW Masters, the German automotive giant is also the title sponsor of the PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in England and the International Open in Germany. “As the name indicates, the BMW Masters will play a particularly significant role in BMW’s commitment to the sport as a ‘Global Golf Player’,” added Ian Robertson, a member of the board of BMW’s marketing and sales unit. “The BMW Masters is another highlight in our sustainable global golf strategy. China is a key market for BMW and golf is the ideal stage, on which to present our claim of dynamics and precision.” 34

Golf Travel Insights 2012
Introduction Golf tourism, in its own right, has developed into a successful business, and there are numerous tour operators tailoring their offers to the specific needs of golfers all over the world. Whether as a primary motivation for a holiday or simply as a secondary activity, golf attracts millions of holidaymakers worldwide. According to IAGTO1, international golf tourism exceeded 50 million travelers in 2011. Golf tourists purchase many different goods and services while on their trip, supporting a wide range of businesses such as hotels, restaurants, retailers and, of course, golf facilities themselves through the purchase of green fees, golf equipment and cart rental. IAGTO estimates golfers’ spend to be 120% more than that of other travelers’. While golf tourism demand still lags behind the volume of pre-crisis years, we were pleased to note that the number of golf tourists was on the increase in 2011 and there are several emerging golf destinations in the market. Nearly three-quarters of the tour operators surveyed are also positive about the future. In order to provide a reflection of golf tourism trends in today’s challenging economic environment, KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice has undertaken the Golf Travel Insights survey among international golf tour operators for the third time in early 2012. Golf bookings in 2011 Golf bookings indicate a positive trend in market demand as 60% of the surveyed golf tour operators have experienced an increase in the number of golf trips2 in 2011, compared to only 38% in our survey last year. A similarly encouraging sign is that fewer operators reported a decrease in bookings: 12% versus 54% in the year 2010. More than half of golf tourists booked 4-7 night trips in 2011, while a quarter booked short trips of 1-3 nights and 20% stayed for longer than a week. This distribution was similar in previous years, indicating little change in the average length of stay. About 35% of all bookings were group bookings in 2011, typically by groups of 8-12.
Most popular destinations The most popular destinations in 2011 continued to be Spain and Portugal, together with the UK and Ireland, while emerging destinations like Thailand, Vietnam and Turkey are also enjoying an increasing interest. Italy and Bulgaria are also considered as emerging golf tourism hot spots by many operators. North African destinations (including Egypt, Tunisia and to some extent Morocco) were hit hard in 2011 by the Arabic uprising in terms of inbound golf tourism. On the other hand, golf markets of Mediterranean Europe (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Turkey) could benefit slightly from the Arabic unrest by taking over some of the golf tourism demand. The United States traditionally has a very strong domestic golf tourism market, while Argentina and the Dominican Republic have become more and more popular outbound tourism destinations for US citizens.
Golf tourists and their expectations The biggest golf travelers remain the Americans, the Canadians and the Brits, followed by the Scandinavians (mainly Swedish) and the Germans. While golf tourists care most about the quality of the golf courses at a destination, they are becoming more and more price sensitive. Continued on p40 38

R&A and PGAs of Europe: ‘Freely Exporting Education World Wide’ Golf ’s policy of freely exporting education around the world was dramatically emphasised in two months of widespread activity recently when NINE emerging countries were visited as the Golf Development Programme gathered yet more pace. New golfing nations – spread between South and Central America, the Caribbean and the Far East- benefited from the joint initiative between The R&A and the PGAs of Europe as highly qualified consultant coaches were funded in helping fledgling golf cultures to adopt best practices as they grow the game. Between midOctober and December golfing missionary-style trips were undertaken to Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Republic of the Union of Myanmar (more commonly known as Burma), Panama and Trinidad and Tobago thereby taking the number of countries receiving such aid past the 50 mark funded by R&A surpluses from the staging of The Open Championship.

Pricing Based on our survey, a 1-3 night golf trip, including accommodation and green fee but excluding flight, costs between EUR 300 and 600, depending on the destination. A 4-7 night trip typically costs EUR 600-900, while those who travel for longer than a week should budget over EUR 1,500, with some luxury golf trips costing as much as EUR 5,000. Thirty-nine percent of golf tour operators have recorded an increase in package price, while the majority kept prices stable in 2011. Changes in pricing, however, also depend on which destinations they organize trips to. For instance, prices of golf trips in the markets of South-East Asia (e.g. Thailand and Vietnam) have increased significantly (30-50%), and have also gone up in Turkey by 10-20%. On the other hand, a 10-20% price decrease was experienced in Spain and Portugal. Continued on p44

Booking methods According to travel agents who participated in our survey, most bookings are made over the phone or by email/Internet, with golfers seeking personal contact with the agents in order to get information and advice. As golf trips are typically tailored to the tourists’ needs, many do not find standardized Internet platforms a viable way of booking golf trips. Over half of the trips are booked 1-6 months prior to the travel date, while 25% are booked more than six months in advance (typically group bookings). About one fifth of the bookings are made within one month of the travel date. Continued on p52

Future outlook Similarly to last year, over two-thirds of the surveyed tour operators expect a slight growth in golf tourism in the short to medium term, and about a fifth expects stagnation. While 9% are pessimistic and predict a decrease, 4% foresee spectacular growth. Whether tour operators have positive expectations about the future of their business also depends on which destinations they focus on. According to IAGTO, golf tourism continues to grow at pace, and is soon expected to reach the level of 2007 (before the economic downturn). Destinations with a strong product mix, competitive price and appropriate promotion strategy can especially prosper in the coming years.
Appendix – Survey profile This report is based on a global survey of golf tour operators, performed by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice in early 2012, reflecting the year 2011. Ninety golf tour operators from 35 countries have participated in the survey. Nearly half of the responses were received from European golf tour operators, 24% from Asia and 23% from those located in the Americas, with the remainder being Africa-based or from Australia and New Zealand.

R&A confirm putter “anchoring” is under review The legality of players “anchoring” their putting stroke is under active review by golf ’s governing bodies, The R&A’s Chief Executive Peter Dawson confirmed today. The move had been prompted by the recent upsurge in use of anchored putting strokes on Tour – not just among older players – but a final decision is yet to be made. Any action that is taken would most probably be by amending the Rules on method of stroke rather than limiting putter length, with any change effective from 1 January 2016, when the next edition of the Rules of Golf is published. Speaking during a press conference at Royal Lytham & St Annes, venue for this year’s Open Championship, Dawson said: “The use of long and belly putters, and in particular any anchoring of the club against any part of the player’s body, has been under review by The R&A and USGA for some time. The recent upsurge in use of anchored putting strokes on Tour has brought the subject into renewed focus. “We appreciate that this is a complex and emotive issue that divides opinion. Any decision will be made with the best interests of the game in mind and introduced only after a lengthy period of notice.” No specific length of time has been given for a decision to be made, with the final decision resting with the Rules committees of The R&A and USGA. The thing about a golfing breakaway to Mossel Bay is that it’s best if it’s done with the kids.
“Mossel Bay is the Do Stuff Destination for the whole family, and that means that there’s a whole lot of attractions activities to keep your spouse or your kids busy if they aren’t golfers,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. She said that the town considers the natural environment its biggest attraction, but that the many indoor attractions (like aquariums, entertainment centres, museums, shopping, and beauty spas) ensure that there’s something to do even on the wettest of days. “And, by the way, that doesn’t happen very often - we have more than 300 days of sunshine a year here on this stretch of the coast.” Which is good news for play, of course. Ms. Holm said that Mossel Bay’s tourism industry has begun to embrace the principles of responsible tourism - which is ‘tourism that creates better places for people to live in, and better places to visit. “We all want to leave a better world for our children, and, since tourism has such a large impact on travellers, hosts, economies and the natural environment, it’s become imperative that we pay attention to we travel and how this will impact on the future. “Fortunately Mossel Bay offers a number of fun ways of exploring both the environment and our different cultures,” she said. “These range from 5-night walking tours (the 56
Oystercatcher Trail and Hunter-Gatherer Trails, during which you learn about our ancient ancestors, and how they survived - and thrived - on this part of the coast), to the touch tanks at the Dias Museum Complex’s Shell Museum and at Oceans Aquarium at The Point - where even the littlest of the kids begin to learn about the creatures in our seas. “And our cultural experiences - like Back Road Safari’s Meet The People Tours - create opportunities for meaningful interaction with local businesspeople from across the community. “And since responsible tourism is all about generating mutual respect, engaging with one another, and reducing our impact on the world, these activities sensitise and educate - but subtly, and with real impact.” Ms. Holm said that the town has recently selected a ‘Responsible Tourism Photo of The Year.’ “It was taken by Fiona Ayerst and shows her son, Finn, and his dad, Ryan Johnson, looking at a smooth-hound shark in the aquarium at The Point - and we think it tells powerful stories about responsible tourism and about Mossel Bay. “Especially, it says ‘you’re all welcome!’,” she said.

Mobiles to be allowed at British Open
LONDON (Reuters) - Spectators will be able to use mobile phones at this year's British Open golf at Royal Lytham & St Annes after organisers announced they were relaxing a ban they put in place in 2006. Tournament organisers are particularly sensitive to phones ringing while players play their shots, leading the governing Royal & Ancient to introduce a complete ban at The Open. However, because of the growth of smart phones and the golfing apps that go with them, it has relented. Fans will be able to carry their phones with them on the course, although calls will have to be made in designated areas. "There is no denying the attachment people feel to their mobile phones both in terms of gathering information and staying in touch with family and friends," R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said in a statement on Monday. "We understand this and allowing their use at the Championship will enrich The Open experience." Dawson said fans would be able to use a range of Open apps, allowing them to keep tabs on scoreboards, tee times, news and video highlights. "We understand there will be concerns over this change in policy but will be liaising with spectators at the Championship to ensure calls are not taking place near play," he said. "Our spectators are very knowledgeable and understand golf and so we are confident they will respect the players." The Open begins on July 19. May/June 2012

The discussion took place during the event’s annual “Trends in Contemporary Golf Course Architecture” presentation moderated by ASGCA President Rick Phelps and featuring ASGCA Past President Damian Pascuzzo; Gil Hanse, ASGCA; and Jerry Lemons, ASGCA Associate. On growing the game… Jerry Lemons: “Everyone needs to ask, ‘What first made you fall in love with golf?’ From there, work on making golf fun for all, affordable, accessible to anyone and then you are making business sense.”
Damian Pascuzzo: “Part of the attraction is that I can play with the same equipment and on the same courses as the very best players in the world. I will never get together with my friends and play baseball at Fenway Park, but I can play Pebble Beach and TPC.” On the value of golf course rankings… Gil Hanse: “Rankings are more a popularity contest than a true evaluation of architecture. Rankings fill magazine pages in the off season, but most people buy golf magazines for instructions and features, not rankings.” Pascuzzo: “Reading about rankings is no substitute for going out and seeing the great golf courses. It’s like just reading about great works of art instead of going out and seeing them first hand.”

The PH Fuel Highveld Mid Amateur Open The PH Fuel Highveld Mid Amateur Open was played at a cold and windy Middelburg CC on the 1st of April. 125 entries were received at the final field trimmed to 90 – the course is in mint condition The morning round got underway at 06h45 in really cold conditions. The leader at lunch was Graeme Watson on a fine 69 from William Morkel and Robert Marr on 70. The afternoon cleared somewhat but it was still windy making the course a lot tougher and longer. In the run in for top spot Hardus Maritz put in a charge and was leader in the clubhouse on 142 with Marius Lourens. Graeme was struggling with his game but hung on for level par 72 to win by a single stroke. Rowan du Preez and Henk Geldenhuys shared 4th spot on 144.
Watson adds another trophy to his cabinet Graeme Watson continued to his fine vein of form, which started at the Limpopo Mid-Amateur Open which he won at Zebula in December, with another win in the Volvo sponsored Gauteng North Mid-Amateur Open played at Bronkhorstspruit on the 25th March. Watson posted scores of 67 and 70, to win by 5 shots. Henk Geldenhuys managed rounds of 69 and 73 to finish in second place while Gauteng North players Rod Tiley and Pieter Cooper finished in 3rd and 4th on scores of 143 (1 under) and 144 (level) respectively.
Maiden victory for Van Wyk on Glacier Junior Series Keelan van Wyk claimed his maiden victory on the Glacier Junior Series when he won the Charl Schwartzel Tournament at Maccauvlei GC last month. The 13-year-old Van Wyk chipped in for an eagle on the par-five 18th on his way to a one-under-par 71 and a one-stroke victory over Dylan Naidoo in the A Division. Kyle McClatchie finished third on a count out on one-over-par 73. I’m very happy. This is my first big tournament win, so it feels really good, said Van Wyk, who was impressive off his five handicap. Naidoo seemed to have the tournament in his grasp with his levelpar 72 before Van Wyk’s late charge. But Naidoo was happy with his performance considering he wasn’t even sure he would get into the event. 68

Dlamini claims wire-to-wire victory at Sanlam Women’s SA Stroke Play Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini survived a late round wobble to end a three year wait with a brilliant wire-to-wire victory in the Sanlam Women’s Amateur SA Stroke Play Championship at Umhlali CC last month. The Tuks Golf Academy student started with an eight shot lead and fired a final round two-over-par 73 to put the seal on a magnificent performance and a runaway victory. Dlamini finished a full 10 shots clear of Mpumalanga’s Izel Pieters, who eagled the par-five 10th and parred the last eight holes for a 73 to sneak into second ahead of Free State amateur Lumien Orton and 17-year-old rising star, Lara Weinstein. Orton, back on the circuit after a year-long lay-off, carded a 76 while Weinstein saved her best golf for the final round and signed off on a 72. “I am just completely overwhelmed at this moment,” said a smiling Dlamini, after popping in the winning putt under thunderous applause from her peers surrounding the 18th green. “This means so much to me. To lift this trophy after trying and coming close for three years, tells me I can really compete. I won the Sanlam SA Match Play in 2009, but this victory tells me I can play, really play.” In the windy conditions over the first two rounds, Dlamini was the only player in the A-Division field of 105 golfers to break par. After an opening 70 and second round 69, she shot a 2 over par 73 for a massive 10 stroke victory. Since joining the Tuks Golf Academy at the University of Pretoria last year, Dlamini has come on in leaps and bounds. She showed her determination when she successfully defended her title as the University of Pretoria's Women's Club Champion by shooting a 36-hole total gross score of 125 (-19) at Centurion CC this February and underlined her growing stature with victories this year at the Eastern Cape Match Play and Stroke Play, the North West Stroke Play and KwaZulu-Natal Match Play. Two common problems that are experienced with golfers include: 1. The thighs rotating in, pushing the knees towards each other at address. 2. Moving the knees forward towards the ball or straightening them in the downswing; this causes a change of the angles created at address and this in turn sacrifices space for the hands and arms to work through. If the above sounds familiar, it means that you may not have the required strength and stability in your knees and thighs. Knees pushed in towards each other at address will affect your ability to coil correctly, so sacrificing rhythm and power. Altering your height during the swing, whether it is by the knees bending or straightening too much during the swing, will lead to frustrating inconsistencies in your ability to strike the ball out of the centre of the clubface. Strengthening the muscles that stabilize the Femurs (bone of the thigh), and learning to load the Hamstrings as stabilizers to maintain the angles of the knees (the angle made up by extending a line through the thigh and the lower leg) will help you maintain your height while creating a powerful coil. The following is a great exercise to do in the comfort of your home. All you need is a golf club and a Thera(elastic)- band: 1. Keep your legs together and tie the elastic band tightly around your legs, just below the knees. 2. Then stand up and reposition your legs so that your knees and feet are hip-width apart. Maintain this alignment throughout the exercise. Do not allow the thighs to rotate in and the knees to come together. Pushing out against the band will activate the stabilizer muscles in the hips. 3. Hold a golf club horizontally in front of your thighs. Push your hips back and lower the club straight down in front of the legs by bending your upper body forward from the hips. Maintain a straight spine by keeping the distance between your belt and chest bone at a maximum. Don’t allow your knees to move forward. The knees must be bent to allow your hips to move back, but the knees stay in the same place all the time! 4. Do 3 sets of 12, 3 times per week. If you use a weighted bar, do not do the exercise more than twice per week. Try doing this exercise and we are confident that it will improve your stability and make a difference to your ball striking ability.

Die vrouens trek nou baie mooier aan en hulle kan bekostig om hulle mooi lyfies en gesiggies vir ons te wys wat gepaard met ’n pragtige “outfit”, pienk gholf skoene en mooi pastel kleure wat baie mooi op ’n vrou lyk, het gholf sommer heelwat lekkerder geraak vir ons mans, want daar is iets vir die oog as daar te veel “bogeys” in ons pad staan.

En tog as ons in die bed lê die aand, lag ons en sê, more sal ek alles weer oor doen, maar tog so nou en dan iets anders doen om die monster ’n rukkie langer te kan weg hou. Aan almal van julle, geniet hierdie wonderlikke spel. Trek lekker “sexy” aan, wees vriendelik, wees “competitive”, streef na daardie droom van julle. Moet net nooit vergeet dat hierdie is een “game” wat jy nooit gaan “conquer” nie. Hy gaan jou baie meer kere klop as wat jy hom gaan klop. Is dit nie maar die rede hoekom ons hierdie spel speel nie ? Get your long-range pu tts into that three foot zone! If a green is medium paced (around ten on the stimp-meter; ask Dad) and is relatively flat, then if you make a stroke one foot bac k and one foot through, your ball will rol l about ten feet or so. No w for every foot you add into the overall stroke, say a foot and a half back and a foot and half through, your ball will roll anothe r ten feet or so. Two feet back and throu gh and it will finish aro und the 30 foot mark and so on. Now if you have an up or downh iller or the green is quicker or slower tha n the average green the n you adjust the length of your stroke acc ordingly. Once you hav e tuned into your stroke lengths for the sur face you are putting on, then take six balls and start from a flag on the edge of putting green, moving back in ten foot intervals from the hole and start putting bac k towards the hole. See if you can get six out of six into the thr ee foot zone. You will say good-bye to three putts and maybe even ma ke the odd one! Make sure you have the same smooth pace and len gth of stroke back and thr ball strike the middle of ough. Also watch the the putter face to get con sistent distance control.

Born in Houston, Texas (May 24th 1910) he played barefoot and caddied at courses where the greens were made of sand. Bob Hope called him the funniest amateur comedian in the world. Ben Hogan said "he was the most underrated golfer in history. The man played shots I hadn't dreamed of." He was a nightclub singer for a brief time before he committed himself fully to golf. He won three Masters and 31 events on the PGA Tour. Largely known for his wit and his extravagantly elegant and colorful attire. He once said "If you're going to be in the limelight, you might as well dress like it." Along with Gene Sarazen, he hosted the popular TV show, "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf." Branden too good in China Branden Grace was untouchable at Binhai Lake GC last month and cruised his way to a three-stroke victory, his third on the European Tour this season. “I thought my first win was around the corner [this season]. To have three before May is literally unbelievable, but I’ve been playing well so I’ve been feeling like I can win and I’ve been giving myself opportunities.” The 23-year-old took his earning tally to a cool €1.05-million after a final-round 69 kept him three strokes clear of Germany’s Nicolas Colsaerts, the only man to take even a whiff at the lead. “I stayed really calm today,” said Grace. “I kept hitting the ball well. I missed a couple of shots the first couple of holes but regrouped well and made the birdies where it counts on the par fives, and just stayed with it from there. Continued on pg 85

He struggled in Europe during 2011, but after a breakthrough win at the 2012 Joburg Open he found the secret to success. A week later he lifted the Volvo Golf Champions trophy, leaping to number one in the Race to Dubai. “I’m definitely here to win every week I play now,” he added. Due credit must go to caddie to Zack Rasego, who was on Louis Oosthuizen’s bag when he won the 2010 Open Championship. Rasego, now Grace’s caddie, seems to have made the difference to the Fancourt professional’s mindset. Considering it’s only April, Grace is close to the record-books, with three being the magic number. He is the third-youngest player ever to record three wins in a single season, and is the third South African to do so, following in the footsteps of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. George Coetzee also shot 69 on Sunday and finished tied fourth, a superb result for the 25-yearold. But Grace was the man of the hour, and the limelight was his. May/June 2012

Third time lucky for Swanepoel in Zimbabwe Chris Swanepoel began his Sunday round five strokes shy of the lead, and would never have guessed he would end up with his first playoff win and the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open title. It’s my first playoff win in three tries, and it’s an incredible feeling,” he said. The 27-year-old fired on all cylinders on his way to the playoff, penciling in 10 birdies to reach 15-under-par and catch a faltering Trevor Fisher and then outdo him in a playoff. “This is a nice win,” said Swanepoel. “Against Fisher – he’s a really good player and a good guy. I feel sorry for him, but unfortunately there can only be one winner, we can’t split it.” While he waited in the clubhouse, Fisher was struggling to finish things, and a missed four-footer for par at the 18th left him tied with Swanepoel. And so the playoff was set on the 18th. The first trip saw both players make pars, but on the second Fisher went left and into the trees with his tee-shot. Swanepoel made the green in regulation and put his birdie putt just a foot past the hole. Fisher, putting for par for 15 feet, failed box the long putt, which left the Pretoria player with a tap-in for victory. Swanepoel was still shocked by the outcome, and happily added: “I thought today one of us might get up there, but I didn’t think I was going to get into a playoff. 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? Born in JHB. St Johns Primary School - JHB, Bishops Senior School - CT. My parents moved from JHB to Elgin in 1970. 2. Did you come from a sporting background? Not really - Both my parents played tennis and golf but not at any competitive level. My brother was also a talented sportsman but never played at representative level. 3. At what age did you start playing cricket? I played cricket from a very early age - bowling to my brother. I lived for sport and as a kid always had my cricket bat or soccer ball in my bed. At junior school i always played a year or two above my age and attended extra coaching sessions on weekends. 4. Was it always cricket or did you have any other sporting interests? I did play rugby at Craven Week and WP u/20. After inuring was forced to stop playing. It was always my dream to put on a green & gold rugby jersey. 5. Seems like South African Cricket is in a “good place” with lots of up and coming young players?

SA has some very talented players currently and will compete against all countries and should be at the top of the rankings in all forms of the game. If one was to add a world class spinner into the Test side we would be almost invincible. 6. Would you do anything different, or any advice on trying to win the World Cup? Our turn will come, and don't be surprised if it is at the next World Cup. With Gary Kirsten at the helm, and the current crop of players we have every chance of winning it. Although our record is poor, every World Cup is a new event and history has no meaning. What SA Cricket must do is sort out its administration. It is critical for our success that the admin is solid and professional. 7. Are you still involved in cricket in any sort of way? No, after cricket i had to focus on my farm and children. Living in Elgin made any involvement impractical. 8. What is your opinion on 20/20 cricket? 20/20 has been a great inspiration. It has developed the skills of all players in all departments of the game. As a result, Test cricket has developed amazingly and has made it so much more entertaining. Unfortunately they are playing too much 20/20 and nobody is watching the other forms of the game. I am not sure that is sustainable.

As the most exiting and exhilarating it was surely my 100 off 49 balls at Springbok Park against Mike Gatting's team. However, there were many team efforts like: - Winning the Currie Cup for the first time in 1983/84. - Going to the World Cup in 1992. - Winning the Benson & Hedges competition on several occasions. 11. What are you currently doing? Are you still farming, and with what?? Although we live in Elgin and my wife and i farm together with Apples, free range chickens and cut flowers, i work for Pam Golding Properties. I manage the offices in Elgin, Onrus, Hermanus & Stanford. 12. Favourite music? I love all music but of my generation my favorites must be Cat Stevens and Neil Diamond. I also like Adele.

I try to practice several times a week after work before i head back home to the farm. This i try in summer, as in winter it becomes quite difficult with the sun setting so early. 5. Where are you currently a member at? I have been a member at Hermanus GC since i was 20 years old. 6. Where would your ultimate golfing destination be? Wouldn't Augusta be amazing ! I went to Scotland last year and played 6 of the British Open Courses. I would love to play in Ireland as well. (one day) 7. Who would be in your ideal fourball? Jack Nicklaus, Will Smith, Jack Nicholson, APK (me)

Bubba Watson's 'miracle shot' wins US Masters, with his pink clubs and unconventional style Bubba Watson, the idiosynchratic American left-hander, conjured a miracle shot at the second playoff hole to beat Louis Oosthuizen and win the US Masters at Augusta National. Watson, the selftaught maverick with the pink driver, looked to be in trouble when he hooked his tee shot into the trees at Augusta’s 10th hole. Although he had a decent lie, he needed a 30-metre hook to get it to the green. But nobody in golf swerves and curves and makes the ball talk like the 33-year-old Watson, who boasts that he has never had a lesson. "I’m pretty good at hooking," he would say later."I hit a crazy shot that I saw in my head, and somehow I’m here in a green jacket talking to you," he told journalists afterward. The American pulled off the shot, not only finding the green but hitting it to four metres from the flag. Oosthuizen came up short of the green, chipped it up to five metres and missed his putt to save par by the barest of margins. Watson had two putts to win the green jacket, and used them up. He was embraced on the green by his mother Molly, his caddie and various friends from the tour, including Australia’s Aaron Baddeley, and he cried openly.

He had parochial support from the crowd; he spent his college years at the University of Georgia. "It’s a blur," he said. "The last nine holes, I don’t remember anything." Playing together in the second-last pairing, Watson and Oosthuizen had finished at 10-under par for the tournament on another amazing Augusta Sunday. Oosthuizen had to make a tricky putt from almost two metres on the 18th green in regulation play to even make the play-off. Watson had missed a five-metre putt a few moments earlier for the outright win. They both parred the first play-off hole, the 18th on the course, with Oosthuizen’s putt for birdie grazing the hole, so they had to move on to the 10th hole as the light faded. Earlier Oosthuizen had produced just the fourth albatross in Masters history to seize control of the tournament. He holed his second shot from 230 metres at the long par-five second, striking the shot purely and seeing it seap through the gap between the two front bunkers, reach the green and trickle hard right and into the hole. It was the first ever two at the second hole in a Masters tournament. There have only been three previous albatrosses in the tournament's 78-year history - Gene Sarazen’s famous "shot heard around the world" at the 15th hole in 1935, Australian Bruce Devlin’s in 1967 at the eighth hole, and Jeff Maggert’s at the 13th in 1994. Four players finished tied for third - the overnight leaders Phil Mickelson (72) and Peter Hanson (73), Matt Kuchar (69) and the perennial near-miss man Lee Westwood (68). Mickelson was left to rue another meltdown - this time with a triple-bogey six on the par-three fourth hole after he blasted his tee shot into high bamboo left of the green and took two right-handed paddle shots to extract his ball. It was his second triple-bogey of the week; he took seven at the par-four 10th on Thursday.
