WINNING LETTER Dear Editor In my opinion the Americans just don’t get it. I find the idea of expanding the size of golf holes to be insane. Golf, it would seem, is becoming less popular in America, with the difficulty of the game named as one of the main reasons. So what do you do? You expand the cups! It is impossible to believe but, incredibly, larger holes are being installed at about 100 courses across the US as part of a pilot scheme. Like every golfer who has ever played the game, I have found myself standing knock-kneed over putts so short that an ant could have pushed the ball into the hole – then missed, as my heart started pounding and my hands shaking. The yips, as golfers know them, have affected far better players than me, including top professionals such as Bernhard Langer. They are golf ’s equivalent of the emotional paralysis
that grips a flyhalf when he steps up to take a penalty in the 80th minute on which South Africa’s hopes are riding. Cruel, yes. But in the alchemy of professional sport, a necessary cruelty. If Tiger Woods holed every putt within 10ft – as he would, if larger holes were introduced – the game would be very dull. It is the fact that the best golfers in the world can, and often do, miss putts that a child of six could sink that makes the game so fascinating. If you take the fear of missing humiliatingly short putts out of golf, you take away its soul. Regards Julian Rich
Dear Julian I have to agree with you, in the quest to make the game of golf more attractive to a wider audience we must not as you say “take away its soul”. It is tantamount to shortening the Comrades marathon to attract more runners. Thank you for writing in. Regards

Bavaria 0.0% Announced
‘Official Beer’ of the PGA of SA The PGA of South Africa has announced it’s new partnership with Bavaria 0.0% and the introduction of the first ‘official beer’ of the association. This sees the joining of two prestigious ageold traditions – the institution of golf and the 300-year expertise of the Bavaria independent family brewery.
C
hief Executive of the PGA of South Africa, Ivano Ficalbi, said, “Our decision to partner with Bavaria 0.0% mirrors our philosophy to support responsible drinking on golf courses and in the clubhouse. We are confident that as an alcohol-free and healthy alternative, Bavaria 0.0% will become the preferred choice of beverage amongst golfers, during their round of golf and at the 19th hole”. Roger Ter Horst of Bavaria Brewery Holland, added, “We are proud to be the official beer of the PGA of South Africa and excited at the opportunity it presents to introduce Bavaria 0.0% to the South African golfing scene. With the full flavour and aroma of a beer, Bavaria 0.0% perfectly meets the
4
aspiration of finishing a round of golf with an icecold beer, but without the negative effects of alcohol. We believe that this will make it an excellent and positive thirst quencher, when golfers want to sink a few quick ones after golf ”. Bavaria 0.0% is brewed in accordance with a method that does not produce any alcohol. This technique has been patented and to date it remains unique in the world of brewing. As there is no need to filter and evaporate any alcohol, there is no loss of vital aromas and taste. Golfers following stringent health and fitness programmes will be pleased to know that Bavaria 0.0% is brewed using pure, natural ingredients and contains wholesome vitamins, making it the ‘above par’ choice that carries the full endorsement of the PGA of SA.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Sir Nicholas Rose has made a life study of helping people obtain HIGH DEFINITION VISION using the best possible optics
BETTER VISION = BETTER GOLF A new series brought to you by Sir Nic Rose (Dip-Optom(SA)FOA(SA)Wits 1976)
The importance of protecting our young golfers properly and preserving their precious vision from an early age
There are 4 cardinal rules when it comes to your children's eyes 1) Protect their eyes 2) Protect their eyes 3) Protect their eyes 4) Don’t leave it until it’s too late!
What we look out for:
Protection of the eyes from an early age is essential to maintain clear sharp vision in later years.
These days a standard part of the eye-test in our practice is a very precise digital measurement of the clarity and transparency of the different structures of the eye.
This is particularly pertinent when we look after the eyes of our young golfers who spend extended periods of time outside on the golf course and who are exposed to an ongoing assault of harmful UV. Harmful UV present in sunlight has a cumulative aging effect on the lens of the eye causing a chemical change in the lens where it progressively loses its clarity. The lens of the eye is cleverly designed to absorb UV to prevent the UV from going through the lens and damaging the sensitive visual cells of the retina. When the clarity deteriorates due to long term UV exposure, it can become like looking through a frosted bathroom window....you just can't see through it. 10
I see patients whose transparency varies on average between 40 and 100% depending on the amount of UV damage that has occurred to their eyes over the years. Some teenagers already show a reduced score of 5060% which is generally directly attributed to UV exposure. This deterioration can only be stopped or slowed down by wearing UV protection whenever you are outside. From my personal active outdoor sporting life my own lenses were losing 5% of their clarity per year until I stopped the deterioration by diligently wearing protective sporting sunglasses whenever I am outside.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Don’t get any old sunglasses 100% UV protective sunglasses can be made up in high definition prescription and specialised tints per the individual young golfer’s vision requirements. Even if you do not have a prescription we strongly advise: Don't get any old sunglasses! There is more to it than just letting your youngster pick the coolest design. It is always best to use an Optometrist who understands sports vision to advise you and to find the best solution for your child. A simple example: Dark tints deteriorate visual abilities when used on overcast days. In a normal everyday situation such a tint may be perfectly comfortable and provide top glare protection – but on the golf course the wearer could be disadvantaged. Instead we suggest a contrast-enhancing tint for golfers. This tint provides all the necessary protection and simultaneously enhances contrast in all conditions. Find out which Optometrist specialises in Sports Vision in your area. Always seek professional advice – even for non-prescription sunglasses. When can my child wear contact lenses? An old lady of 90 came into the practice the other day. In all my years of seeing patients she is the only person who had an almost 100% clarity of her lens. This is what she told me: Her mother had always from the earliest she could remember made her wear eye protection outside.....even when she was swimming. She hated it but did it... The results speak for themselves. No child should be outside on the golf course without wearing adequate UV protection Sunglasses provide two types of protection: UV and glare. Many children may believe that the glare is not worrying them and therefore opt to not wear sunglasses at all. This is a cardinal mistake as it means that they have ZERO UV protection. UV protected clear spectacles Clear prescription glasses can have a UV protective coating added as part of anti-reflection coating treatment. In my practice we advise this as a standard treatment for all clear glasses. It is a simple way of ensuring that our prescription wearing patients are never exposed to the sun without UV protection.
Apart from the many visual advantages in wearing contact lenses, they also give children confidence. Image is very important for many children who may not want to be seen to wear prescription glasses on the golf course. I have fitted children from age 12 upwards but always assess on an individual basis. The most important factor is that the child must want to wear them. Disposable contact lenses are ideal for children as it eliminates the hassle of cleaning and maintaining lenses. This option is sterile and safe and you simply throw them away after a day’s wear. Do you really know how well your child can see? As most learning is gained through the eyes it is essential for your child to see well. Ideally parents should have their children’s eyes tested by a qualified Optometrist every second year. Remember that you child will be very excited about seeing better so wearing spectacles for the child is sometimes more difficult for the parent than the patient. Just imagine how their game will improve when they can see the hole clearly...

Golf Assessment Program for any player aspiring to progress up a level in the game.
By Paul Cuningham, PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon
Rediscovering the short stick! As of January 1st, 2016, Rule 14-1b bans the anchoring of long putters and belly putters against the body. Rule 14-1b Anchoring the Club In making a stroke, the player must not anchor the club, either “directly” or by use of an “anchor point.” Note 1: The club is anchored “directly” when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm. Note 2: An “anchor point” exists when the player intentionally holds a forearm in contact with any part of his body to establish a gripping hand as a stable point around which the other hand may swing the club. 1 - Eye-line over the ball: With the correct putter fitment you can achieve your ideal set-up over the ball. It's important to have a clear view down your target-line & to watch your strike. 2 - Hands under the shoulder-line: This is your pendulum point, not the putter head! Whatever you attach to your hands will move in unison with them as long as they are stable.

3 - Dynamic balance on the balls of your feet: When humans stand upright they balance through their heels. Putting on your heels makes you tend to fall out of the strike easier, striking the ball low & in the toe of the putter. When finding stability in a mobility activity your best strike is made when you are in the ready or athletic position. Feel like you're coming off a bar stool & not sitting on it! 1 - Sandwich your ball between your putter & your left foot: Position the ball just forward of the bottom of your swing arc. I call this the "BOP", find your "bottom out point" & position your ball just ahead of it for your best launch & roll. 2 - Grip comfortably & feel the weight of your putter hanging under your hands: It's so important to have a solid connection to your club, there are so many variations so make sure you find the right one for you! A comfortable grip allows you to maintain the stability you need with your club face through impact. Keeping the putter head moving underneath or in sync with your hands is vital for optimal ball launch through impact. 3 - From close range, the precision range (3 meters & in), keep connected & soften your elbows into your sides: This is so important for enhanced putter head stability & consistent club face rotation through impact. Depending on the type of putter head you use the rotation amount & path will differ. Choose wisely! 1 - Putter face alignment & optimum speed: Better players, do I even have to justify this!? In this modern era in the game the addition of lines on the top of the putter & alignment assistance on the ball have aided us in better putter face positioning - use the technology! Once you've squared it up, roll your ball a foot & a half through the hole, this will give you your best chance at making it! 2 - Foot alignment: This is of secondary importance to shoulder alignment. Parallel is ideal but if you do have problems with your shoulder-line or launch-line you could close or open your stance slightly to correct this (not ideal). 3 - Shoulder or chest alignment: In precision putting this is the most important fundament to have lined up correctly. Square them up, connect your arms & use the bigger muscles of your upper body to create motion. Rock your shoulders up & down your line or make sure your chest is square through impact. 4 - Spine angle: A bent axil won't keep your car on the road, don't expect your putts to stay on path either with a bent spine! A bent spine locks out mobility making it harder to use your bigger muscles to activate in the stroke. Pushing your bum out & lifting your chin up slightly gets your vertebrae lined up & sitting more comfortably. A comfortable solid set-up is key towards using the "short stick" effectively again. In the next issue we will look at legal ulterior options towards putting solutions i.e. the "Almost Belly" & going "Kuch Style" Till then, keep it tidy on the dance floor & if you have any woes with your game, go to www.gap2success.co.za to find a solution to your golfing success..

SPECIAL FEATURE -THERE’S ALWAYS TIME FOR NINE
There’s Always Time for Nine The discussion these days often centres on why more people are not playing more golf and the fact that the game takes too long is often cited as a reason. For an ever increasing number of people our lives are busier and more complex than ever. More hours are being spent at the office and after that we like to spend more time with our children. Leisure time is precious, and the considerable portion of a day that an 18-hole round often requires is not something everybody can afford. 9-holes typically take 2 hours to complete and it makes sense to promote shorter rounds that golfers can fit into busy lifestyles. Most other recreational activities seem to take 2 hours (bowls, tennis, gym) and one would think that in today’s world the time needed to play 18-holes is excessive. Rather play nine than do not play at all! It is a misconception that golfers who play 9 are beginners, 9-hole golf should be seen as a legitimate alternative and it is an experience that is as complete and as enjoyable as 18-holes. It is also consistent with the time honoured traditions of the game. 18-hole golf will always be the mainstay but many people were introduced to the game on 9-hole courses. Let’s encourage a resurgence of this form of the game.

Cullinan Golf Club is situated about 30 kilometres east of the centre Pretoria and sits within the heart of the village of Cullinan, best known for the discovery of what became known as the Cullian Diamond – the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found.
P
reviously owned by South African golfer and golf personality Dale Hayes, Cullinan Golf Club was bought by ex-provincial cricketer and entrepreneur, Quentin Ferreira, in early 2013. Since then, a huge effort has been made on restoring the club back to its heyday status as the top 9 hole golf course/club in South Africa. Every effort is taken to ensure that members and visitors leave the club talking about the quality of the course. Quentin admits that there are still milestones to achieve, but is quick to point out that the golf course itself, is looking and playing the best it has in years. Although the course was partly re-designed in the late 1960s, the majority of the course is still as it was, back at its inception in 1905. Beautiful Jacaranda, Oak and Blue Gum trees still line the fairways. 20

Boshoff triumphs at SA Boys U-19 Champs Ekurhuleni’s Paul Boshoff defeated Hennie du Plessis from Limpopo at the last hole of a humdinger 36hole final to lift the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Match Play Championship title last month. Throughout a very blustery day at Umhlali GC, the lead changed hands no less than seven times in the ding-dong battle for supremacy. The 17-year-old finalists were still all square at their second visit to the par-three 18th and it looked as if the battle would head to a playoff decider. However, Boshoff’s tee shot stood up to the wind gusting at 30 kilometers an hour off the left, and found the edge of the green, while Du Plessis’s effort splashed in the greenside bunker. The Limpopo golfer played a terrific trap shot that slipped just six feet past the pin, but Boshoff lagged a lengthy putt to the edge of the cup for a tap-in par. Du Plessis missed his attempt to extend the match, and the victory went to Boshoff. The country’s number five ranked junior was absolutely thrilled to get the job done. 24

Strydom back to winning ways at Umhlali Ekurhuleni’s Triston Strydom finally just trusted his ability, his swing and emotions and it paid off handsomely with a three stroke victory in the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Championship in KZN last month. Strydom carded rounds of 71, 68, 70 and 72 to triumph on a winning score of three-under-par 284. Look, if there’s one South African destination you want to visit in the middle of the year, it’s Mossel Bay. And the reason? The weather. “With more than 300 days of sunshine in every 365, we don’t really believe in winter round here,” winked Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “This means that almost every day’s a beach day in Mossel Bay – so it follows that almost every day’s a golf day, too. “And because the weather’s stable - and generally warm* - you’re pretty much guaranteed that our courses (Mossel Bay and Pinnacle Point) will be in great condition, too.” In an attempt to make everyone’s mid-year breakaway even more affordable, many of the local accommodation establishment will be offering discounts of up to 50% on stays of three nights or more between the 1st of May and the 31st of August this year. “We’ve decided to call this campaign ‘Mossel Bay’s Mild Season’ – both because of our weather and because of our prices,” said Ms. Holm. But Mossel Bay is known for its vast and varied choice of attractions and adventures – and for its sport and its shopping, of course – so Mossel Bay’s Mild Season isn’t limited to accommodation. “If you take advantage of any of any of our accommodation deals, you’ll also qualify for discounts on activities ranging from scuba diving to golf – and May/June 2014
that’s good news if you’re planning to come with the family,” said Ms. Holm. In fact, she said, Mossel Bay has a proud reputation as a family holiday destination. “And in golf, it’s a reputation that’s grown since the Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort opened Africa’s first permanent, 6-hole SNAG course.” (SNAG - Starting New at Golf – is a radical new programme for introducing kids to the game). Ms. Holm invited anyone who’s considering a visit to Mossel Bay to download the town’s ‘Things to do’ brochure from its web site, or to collect a copy from the information office on the corner of Church and Market Streets. (The office is open seven days a week.) “We’ve uploaded all our Mossel Bay Mild Season offers and packages to the site – and if any new deals come up as we go along, we’ll advertise them there, too,” she said.

SA U-23 IPT joy for Gauteng North & KZN Gauteng North survived a final round onslaught from Ekurhuleni to lift their second successive South African U-23 Inter-Provincial Championship title, while KwaZulu-Natal secured a popular promotion to the A-Division at Royal Durban last month.
A-DIVISION Ekurhuleni managed to ruin Gauteng North’s undefeated run at this year’s team championship with a 7 – 5 victory, but it was all too little, too late. The defending champions began the final round with three points in hand and, despite the defeat, held out for victory on eight points. Second-placed Central Gauteng defeated Limpopo 7 – 5 to finish second in the standings, edging Ekurhuleni to third place on game points. Western Province took fourth in the log after beating North West Province 8 – 4.

B-DIVISION KwaZulu-Natal mowed down Southern Cape to win the B-Division to the delight of the home crowd. The local heroes took a two point lead into the final round and completed an undefeated run when they mowed down the Garden Route side 9 – 3 to seal their promotion. Meanwhile Boland held off Eastern Province 6.5 – 5.5 to tie Southern Cape and Free State, who beat Mpumalanga 8 – 4. Although all three teams finished with six points, Boland took second on 33.5 games points and Southern Cape, on 29.5 points, edged out Free State for third place by one games point. Park claims Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur glory Gauteng North’s Carrie Park claimed the biggest victory of her amateur career when she won the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Stellenbosch GC last month.
“I was mentally pretty strong and didn’t feel any pressure until the 18th. I knew I was only one shot ahead, and that second shot on 18 was quite intimidating with the water in front of the green. But it worked out well in the end,” she said.
Park, the Women’s Golf South Africa (WGSA) Player of the Year, closed with a 71 to finish on four-over-par 220 and one shot clear of KwaZuluNatal’s Michaela Fletcher. Fletcher was one shot ahead of Park playing the par-four 18th, but three-putted the last. Playing behind her, the 17year-old Park made the only significant putt she had all day when she holed a 10-footer for birdie on the par-four 16th. She then parred her final two holes for the win. Fletcher took second place on five over with a 71 while Ji Sun Kang finished third on six over with a final round of 74. The tournament was still wide open going into the final round, with Park one shot off the joint lead of Ji Sun Kang and Magda Kruger. A bogey at the first was hardly the start Park wanted, but she regrouped while those around her began to falter. “I just focused on making pars and then waiting for the birdies to come,” she said. Kang dropped four shots in her opening four holes on her way to a 74, while Kruger bogeyed the first two holes on her way to a 77. Park picked up her first birdie at the sixth, but the critical putt came on 16. “The birdie on 16 really swung it for me,” said Park. “This means a lot to me because I’m in matric and I didn’t prepare as well as I would’ve liked for this tournament. I wasn’t hitting the ball well so had to rely on my confidence to know I was good enough, and I just had to play my own game.” Park was only aware of Fletcher’s bogey while standing on the 18th fairway and with a one-shot lead. SPECIAL FEATURE – GREENKEEPING
What makes a great course? Behind every successful golf course there is a whole organized system that happens behind the scenes to ensure a winning product. In this article I will show you the true “Heroes” that makes a golf course look great. No operation becomes a success with only the Superintendent leading in the front; the true quality of a course gets measured by the team that does the tasks behind the scenes. I will start with the most important operation in my mind, the workshop. The Workshop determines every step taken on a daily basis, if you don’t have a sound system in place to have all the machines and transport vehicles in a good working condition on a daily basis, then you will see the negative results on the golf course. Machines needs to be checked after every mowing schedule for heights, tire pressure, oil and so much more. Without these checks you will have machines leaving unsightly lines on the fairways, greens and rough and even the roll of the greens won’t be up to the correct standard. It is the duty and responsibility of the workshop manager, which in my case is Nico Young, to make sure all the settings are done and ready for the next day. The daily responsibilities of the workshop team needs to be on par every day to ensure a healthy and visually satisfying playing surface. The schedules of the workshop gets divided into daily, weekly, monthly and yearly procedures. Daily: -
Checking machines heights
-
Checking oil
-
Checking tire pressures
-
Look for hydraulic leaks
-
Preventative maintenance
-
Placing orders for parts on time
-
Filling all machines with fuel
-
Report to the Superintendent to ensure that we can prioritize the work to be done.
-
Taking time every morning to check the machines while they are cutting.
-
Checking that all lights on machines are working on the machines.
-
Managing and delegating tasks to the staff under the workshop manager.
Nico Young (Workshop manager), in his parts store.
Weekly: -
Ensuring that machines that only get used on a weekly basis are in good working order.
-
Cleaning of the workshop.

Yearly: - Replacement program of machines when required.

- Servicing of key components like the compressors and the hydraulic lift in the workshop. These are just a few aspects involved in running a workshop and on a daily basis these tasks gets stretched to the maximum due to unexpected breakages and more. The other crucial part in a successful golf course will be the assistant Superintendent which in my case is Danny Mhlabeni. Without a good assistant no operation can ever be a success. At St Francis Links I am fortunate not to have a good assistant by my side, but a great one to ensure that the prioritized tasks gets done in the correct manner and at the correct standard. The two foremen and staff that completes the team are each crucial in their own positions, without one
A well organised workshop staff member on my team we would not be able to be the 8th best course in the country at the moment. With this article I salute my team and all the other course maintenance teams in this country for their dedication and hard work behind the scenes.

Golf Course Development Cost Survey 2014 (Part 1 of 3) Objectives and methodology Similarly to the previous two editions (2005 and 2008), we have conducted the Golf Course Development Cost Surveywith the objective of finding out the following information:
• What motivates investors to develop a golf course and how do they select key suppliers? • How long does it take to develop a new golf course and what are the major difficulties developers usually face in different geographical locations?
• Where were golf course developments concentrated in the last 6 years?
• How much does it cost to developa golf course in the EMA region?
• Where will be the golf development hot spots for the next 5 years?
• How much value can thename /brand of a renownedarchitect bring to a golf course develop-
ment? • What premium can a golf courseadd to adjacent real estate prices? The countries which are home to the golf courses that have participated in this survey were clustered into sub-regions based on geographical proximity and similarity in economic development. As such, the following groups were defined:
Regions
Countries/Sub-regions
Great Britain and Ireland Northern Europe Central Europe Western Europe & South-East Mediterranean Europe Eastern Europe
England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Russia & CIS, Slovakia Egypt, Morocco, UAE Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa
Middle East and North Africa Sub-Saharan Africa
Methodology The analysis presented in this report has been prepared based on a questionnaire survey of developers and operators of golf courses which opened after 1 January 2008 or are currently under development (the data collection period was February-March 2014). We sent questionnaires to more than 400 golf course owners/developers and recorded a 25% response rate from 32 countries in the EMA region. The golf courses constituting the base of our sample were identified by comprehensive secondary research. In order to complement the findings

of our survey we have also sought the opinion of 40 golf course architects belonging to the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) or the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA). By addressing a set of specific questions to designers, we have collected their views about golf course development costs as well as their professional opinion about the issues covered by this survey. We wish to highlight some specific characteristics and limiting factors of the survey: In order to allow more significant comparison between different

courses that are part of this research, our survey focuses only on golf course development costs and excludes investments related to land acquisition and other facilities such as clubhouses, car parking or driving ranges, as well as investments in maintenance equipment, cart fleets or working capital. Differences in time of development, fluctuation of exchange rates and inflation, as well as differences in the development stage of the various countries involved in the research are limiting factors that we could not overcome.

Profile of our sample This third edition of the Golf Course Development Cost Survey in EMA is based on the responses of owners and developers of over 100 recently constructed/under development golf facilities. We have received responses from 32 different countries in EMA. Eighty-three percent of the participating golf courses were located in Europe, 6% in the Middle East and North Africa and 11% in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sixty percent of the respondents were 18-hole golf courses, 18% were 9-hole facilities and 22% were 27-hole or larger courses. More than half of the responding course operators were linked to tourist resorts or residential communities, while 46% were standalone golf courses. However, it should be noted that when considering only newly constructed facilities, there appears to be an even higher prevalence for the development of golfing facilities as part of housing communities or touristic resorts. In our 2008 sample only 42% of the golf courses were part of mix-used developments. In our sample, 88% of the facilities were already in operation, 10% were at the construction phase while 2% of the golf courses were under advanced planning. Nearly a fifth of the developers of new facilities had outsourced (or were planning to outsource) the operation of the golf course to a professional management company. The vast majority of the survey respondents operate on a membership & daily fee basis.Only 6% are private clubs formembers only. Respective quality ratings were also reported by the developers/ owners participating in the research. Our sample included four types of courses from “top quality” to “lower-end” golf courses. The vast majority (89%) of our survey participants rated their development as high-end courses (high quality or top quality). We also noted that the share of lower-end and mid-quality courses has shrunk significantly since our previous survey. It appears that both integrated developments and stand-alone facilities are trying to differentiate themselves by being associated with higher standards and often with certain brands and extra features. Overview of the EMA golf market The number of golf courses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa has, on average, been growing by less than 1% annually since 2008, resulting in a total of 7,3001 golf courses operating in the region at the end of 2013. This is a small growth in overall supply, especially when compared to the 3.3% annual growth achieved between 1990 and 2008. In fact, several countries, notably Great Britain & Ireland and Spain, have witnessed several closures of golf facilities in recent years. In the course of our research we have identified close to 400 new golf facilities in the EMA region which have opened after 2008 or started development since. Even though the pace of development has slowed, mainly as a result of the credit crunch, there is still activity in the market. Between 1990 and 2008, demand for the game of golf – reflected in the number of affiliated golf players – increased on average at an annual rate of over 5%. This was followed by a period of complete stagnation between 2008 and 2013. Today, the EMA region has around 4.5 million affiliated golfers2. The map on page 67 shows the maturity of the golf markets in countries of EMA, according to the number of inhabitants per golf course (thus reflecting the maturity of supply), and the proportion of the population who play golf (golf participation rate). Europe has over 90% of the golf supply and demand in the EMA region. The golf market has reached a challenging stage here with the development of the game having slowed down or being entirely stagnant in several countries. The decrease in the number of affiliated golfers can be partially attributed to the economic crisis but also to the change in lifestyle, work and golfing patterns. Specifically, in Great Britain and Ireland, where golfers do not need to be registered to play, more and more golfers choose to play on a casual basis, rather than paying club membership. I A L R E P SPECIAL SPECIAL FEATURE REPORT
Great Britain and Ireland comprise by far the largest golf market in Europe, with approximately 3,000 regular courses and around 1.25 million affiliated players. While golf has traditionally been a popular sport in Great Britain and Ireland, it has also grown to become popular in other countries of Europe, such as Germany, France, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries. In Sweden, participation rates are significantly higher than in the rest of the EMA region (5% of Sweden’s population are affiliated golfers). Denmark and the Netherlands have witnessed an impressive increase in their golf course supply in the last 6 years, with the opening of some 20 and 30 new golf facilities in each of these countries, respectively. Interestingly, about half of these courses have less than 18 holes. In an effort to increase golf participation, France, the host country of the 2018 Ryder Cup, has made a commitment to increase its golf course supply with 100 new six- and nine-hole urban golf courses by the time of the event. Therefore, golf course supply has been growing rapidly in Francein recent years, with many of thenewly opened facilities being Par 3 courses and practice facilities. In the Czech Republic, the most mature golf market in Eastern Europe, we have identified some 20 new course openings since 2008. As such, it can be considered among the growing markets in EMA. Since 2008, the Czech Republic has seen an average annual growth of over 9% in registered players. As far as golf tourism is concerned, Europe’s most popular golf tourism destinations continue to be Spain and Portugal, followed by Scotland and Turkey. Other increasingly popular destinations include Italy and Bulgaria, the newly emerging golf tourism hot spots of Europe. In Africa, South Africa continues to be the most dominant golf market, with close to 450 golf courses. Along with a strong local demand for golf (circa 129,000 registered golfers), golf courses benefit from South Africa’s reputation as a high profile tourist destination. While the number of courses in South Africa has dropped slightly in recent years, golf is still an increasingly popular component of residential community developments in the country. In addition to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Mauritius and Morocco also contribute notably to Africa’s golf supply, although these countries are May/June 2014

home to less than 50 golf courses each. Other countries such as Tunisiaand Kenya seek to capitalize on the benefits golf tourism can bring to their economies by offering a growing number of golf resorts. In the rest of the African continent the potential for golf development is virtually untapped. Instrumental to the growth of the game in the Middle East has been the increase of the expatriate population from traditional golfing markets suchas Great Britain, Ireland and the USA.The region is currently witnessing a revival in the property market after a number of years of uncertainty. The UAE is still considered to beat the forefront of golf development, with more than half of the region’s grass courses located in the country.Typically high-end, integrated golf developments which also offer a number of other features and residential real estate opportunities have helped to position the UAEas a premier golf tourism destination.
An insight into global golf development As part of our research into golf course development, we have consulted golf course architects – members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA) – and asked them about their assignments during the last six years. On average, the responding golf course architects and designers have been engaged in 16 assignments each from 2008 to 2013 (2.7 per annum each), with about 40% of all projects located in the EMA region. In the period 2004-2008, the average number of projects per architect was 26 (5.2 per annum each). Continued on p68

It is apparent from these statistics how the economic downturn has negatively affected the development of golf supply. About 40% of architects have reported stagnation in their business in the last6 years and 18% a decline in turnover. We also noted that several architects have changed business direction or closed down their business. Nevertheless, a quarter of the surveyed architects achieved a turnover growth in excess of 20% in the last 5 years. Based on our interviews, those architects that recorded a notable increase in turnover have typically sought projects in emerging golf markets, where there is the opportunity to provide additional assistance besides the typical architectural services. Such services include project management as well as assistance with contracting construction companies and other suppliers. In the developed golf markets, competition is fierce and,as a result, prices are depressed. We have also noted that the share of new de-
O
R
T
velopments has decreased in the last six years versus the re-designs of existing facilities; previously, new developments accounted for 60% and this has now decreased to 50%. The majority of the golf projects worked on by our surveyed architects are located in North America and Europe (37% and 33%, respectively). In North America, these golf projects are largely dominated by renovation or rebranding schemes. Asia has gained a larger proportion of architects’ work: 20% compared to 15% in 2004-2008. Golf developments were mainly concentrated in China (despite the moratorium on golf course construction), followed by South Korea, Myanmarand elsewhere in South-East Asia.In the Middle East, the developmentof high-end projects continued.Only a few of the surveyed architects had projects in Africa.
Many projects were previously put on hold during the economic downturn; therefore, it is encouraging to see that more than 42% of the courses designed by the responding architects between 2008 and 2013 are now already in operation, despite continued economic difficulties. Another 18% are currently under construction, and the remaining 40% are still at the planning phase. For the first time in several years there appears to be stronger activity in golf-related real estate sales; in recent years several large transactions and projects have been successfully negotiated and initiated in various parts of the world.
Future hot spots When surveying golf course architects we asked in which markets they foresee the most significant growth in golf course development in the next 5 years. As in our previous survey in 2008, China was again the most selected location, followed closely by India, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS),South America & the Caribbean, and South-East Asia. Eastern Europe and the UAE were seen as being less dynamic compared to our last survey, but these, as well as other countries of the MENA region, are to some extent still considered by golf architects to be among the hot spots. 68

ON TOUR WITH TANDI
Tandi on Tour The re-launch of the local ladies professional tour under the new banner of the Sunshine Ladies Tour was to say the least a huge success. Now, many of our young, up and coming Professional’s will head overseas for the European and Asian Tours, hopefully well prepared and ready to burn it up. The Sunshine Ladies Tour has been massively supported by the men’s Sunshine Tour, Investec, Super Sport, Sun International and Dimension Data with a great big well done and thank you to each and every one of them and especially the Woman’s PGA for all their hard work and effort.
I
t is so exciting to have Ladies Professional Golf back on the map again here in South Africa. With many of the events re-signed up for next season and the promise of even more events forecast, it is a sign that the support for woman’s Professional golf is gaining momentum. All very good news for us players and even more so for the local teaching Lady Professionals who still have so much to offer the game yet cannot compete overseas due to financial or work constraints. Hopefully, as time goes by, the events will increase in prize money and start to attract big names from Europe to help improve the Tour’s status and marketability. For us local players, myself included, the Sunshine Ladies Tour is a spring board to get back on the international tours, brimming with confidence gained from home soil competitive golf. Another spin off is the prospect of many of the new players gaining sponsorships through successful performances locally, a facet that has been a sore point for many years. Most of our talented young ladies have had to turn the hat in early and return home to find other ways of earning a living, sometimes when on the brink of success or a break through win, financial constraints being the main reason and the lack of adequate sponsorship or support. May/June 2014
I am positive the resurgence of the Sunshine Ladies Tour will change all this and bring forth a new chapter for woman’s Professional Golf and our talented young lady amateurs wanting to pursue golf as a career. Players to watch out for this year: Ashley Simon will be playing on the LPGA this year as she managed to successfully secure her full tour card at the 2013 LPGA Tour School. Lee Ann Pace has a conditional card but will nonetheless get many starts. Hopefully our girls can manage a win! Ladies European Tour Rookies: Nombuhle Dlamini, Kim Williams and Nicole Garcia. Seasoned campaigner’s Stacy Bregman and Connie Chen are looking in fine form. Come on girlsbring home some silverware! On the following pages, you will find the results for the last 2 events of the Sunshine Ladies Tour, Chase to the Investec Cup and the final Order of Merit as well as results for the Inaugural Ladies Zambian Open held at Ndola Golf Club in March. AMATEUR NEWS
Bezuidenhout triumphs at WP Stroke Play Ekurhuleni’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout battled to a comprehensive wire-to-wire victory at the Milnerton Golf Links last month to seal his second Western Province Stroke Play Championship title in two years. Unlike the sunny conditions that encouraged low scoring over the first two, the field was assaulted by a fierce Southeasterly wind that gusted with force during the third and fourth rounds. As the wind raged up to 37 km per hour, the country’s number one ranked amateur wrestled his way to rounds of 71 and 74 to seal a six-stroke victory on six-under-par 278. The Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member was absolute thrilled with the victory. “It was great to win under the trying conditions,” the 19year-old Nigel golfer said. “I was really excited when I won the title last year, but this year’s win actually means so much more to me. I am really pleased with the way I hung in there, because at times we were playing in a five club wind and my frustration levels went climbing through the roof.” FINAL RESULT 278 - Christiaan Bezuidenhout 68, 65, 71, 74 284 - Herman Loubser 69, 71, 69, 75 285 - Luca Filippi 73, 69, 74, 69 286 - Cameron Johnston 73, 72, 69, 72, David Meyers 72, 76, 68, 70

Roux scores home win at WP Amateur Gerlou Roux pulled off a home victory at the Western Province Amateur Championship when he defeated Gauteng North’s James du Preez in a tightly-contested 36-hole final last month. Roux already visited the podium at the Volvo Highveld Mid-Amateur Open earlier in April, but lifting the title with a 2 & 1 win at Milnerton Golf Links marked a first on the Open amateur circuit this season for the 37-year former professional after a number of close calls. Among a slew of top fives was a runner-up finish at the North West Open Championship in March, where Du Preez celebrated a lengthy return to form from injury to defeat Roux in a play-off. “I am absolutely thrilled to have won, because the Western Province Amateur is considered one of the majors on the amateur circuit,” said an elated Roux. “I had to dig really deep and draw on past experience and I’m extremely happy about this achievement.” 82
