PGA NEWS Special Olympics are Special The PGA of SA’s social responsibility project is the Special Olympic Golf Event for athletes with special needs. Each year, in conjunction with stakeholders Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club and The Golf School of Excellence 10 weeks of training and a competition day are held. Special Olympics is founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. This year 120 athletes from 16 schools and homes assisted by 30 coaches participated in the various skills and unified golf event. This was the culmination of 10 weeks of preparatory coaching and divisioning into 17 different groups based on skills levels. Athletes perform the 6 golf skills in the level 1: the short putt, long putt, chip, pitch, iron and wood shots. Each skill has different scores according to the distance from the target the ball finishes. Athletes who have reached higher levels play 9 or 18 holes with a “unified partner” and the pinnacle of 18 holes of golf on his own. Working with the athletes is both very humbling and rewarding. One realizes how blessed we are to be able to cope with life. Says Tracey Marais, PGA SA’s event coordinator who puts the day together, “I’m always moved and inspired by the Special Olympics athletes’ positive attitude and perseverance.” PGA Master Professional Dale Hayes demonstrates to the athletes

Head coach, Martin Briede, summed it up from the coach’s point of view:

“Instruction is kept very simple and basic which is very effective. It is a good reminder that golf instruction in general needs to be kept simple. The athletes get a lot of pleasure out of hitting good shots and are not too concerned with the bad which is another lesson that all golfers should take to heart. It is inspiring to see the athletes participate in this game we love.” Martin has recently been appointed Assistant Technical Delegate for Special Olympics International. This means that he is responsible for assisting in running the golf event in the Special Olympics 2015 World Summer games which will be held in Los Angeles.

WINNING LETTER Dear Ed I am sick and tired of watching American golf on TV these days and having to listen to all the inane comments that get shouted at the players after they make a shot. As a relatively young 35-year-old guy I feel that I might sound like a grouch but I am sure that I’m not the only one that this annoys. Thanks to an unfortunate increase in the number of annoying shouts at US golf events, I find myself shaking my head at the TV like a grumpy old man. For too long now, these ill-mannered American fans have spoiled golf events for ‘normal’ fans around the world. It’s not a problem in SA or elsewhere in the world. It doesn’t happen. We’re above that kind of ‘behaviour’.

Not even on golf tours where there are loads of guys who have been drinking do you hear stuff of this nature which shows you it boils down to simply being an idiot. It’s become custom to shout something that relates to the tour player. It’s their way of saying “we know who you are” and we’re supporting you. Clapping is no longer a show of support, according to these buffoons. It’s no wonder that tour players have, in recent months, walked up to supporters and told them to stop it. It’s beyond a joke now. Regards Andrew Shield

They are morons! Only an idiot would shout “get in the hole” after someone’s hit a shot, followed by “yee-ha! Maybe it was funny the first time – but it has worn very thin. Dear Andrew Well said, I think it is attention seeking and it detracts from the golf. However as we battle to attract crowds to tournaments in SA we have to remember that the spectators must be able to interact with the players in a way that makes them feel special. The odd chirp here and there is not a problem but when the spectator makes a spectacle of himself then he should be told to “get in the hole”. Regards

Periodizing your new season - Player Management 2014 As 2013 starts winding down, some players are fighting for exemption on Tour, the prospects of a better card and playing privileges for 2014. Some players are transitioning from hopefully a successful Amateur career or Satellite Tour and will be campaigning in Q-schools locally or abroad to engage in a prosperous Professional career.

How you have got to where you are and the results you have achieved for this season are a collaboration of what you have worked on technically and how positively it has effected your results, the physical condition you have been in and how it has aided your mental stamina or helped prevent injury and finally how your circumstantial situation in and around your life has effected your conscience, kept distractions at bay and given you the drive to perform at your optimum.

Create AWARENESS of areas in your game and life that need repair and start implementing inspirational goals that will propel you towards your ultimate destination. Your input will = your output. How you structure a periodization plan for a season, a phase or an important event is based similarly to a shot routine.

Every individual exists primarily on three basic levels, one on a physical level, two on the mental plane and three as a Spiritual Being. We must satisfy and find balance in all three to be competent in a successful journey ahead. After all,

statistical information from a previous phase to validate your process of physical and technical improvement. Set simple, realistic and achievable goals in these areas and start training. You will be a bit technical in this phase, work hard in the gym and deconstruct weakness in your short game. In the next phase or week ahead, continuation and refinement of game principles will take place, however a constructive mental approach needs to be looked at, gearing you towards positivity and tension management. This is the unseen work that champions do in the background. This is known as the REPARATION phase. They will find positive affirmations to work on and drill them into their minds, visualize success, work on their breathing to calm their state under pressure and refine their routines to incorporate their new game principles. Once this phase is complete its time to get out onto the course, even if just socially, be dedicated to cementing the principles you have worked on. Maybe create a competitive environment between your friends or enter a satellite event to start sharpening things up. Routine refinement must be made and valuable feedback will be gleaned to polish things off. This is known as the PROGRAMING phase. Your strength, fitness and mobility should be at an optimum by now with your body having stabilized itself with the training that took place over the previous two weeks. You would continue training but ease back on over exertion physically, lessening fatigue and amplifying your energy levels. Technical input will also start being reduced to a swing feeling and your general miss shot understood to fit into your corridors. The next phase in peaking yourself into your zone of optimum performance is the EXECUTION phase. Here you definitely have to compete in an event of relative importance and really test your

routines of perfection, your disciplines, the use of your miss shot and your energy conservation. This phase is also a point of SURRENDER as there is nothing more you can do in preparation, so just give in the need to control, be patient and just allow the outcome to reveal itself. I know you will be pleasantly surprised. Either way, you would have learnt something of serious value through putting yourself through this commitment, gained some invaluable FEEDBACK progressing towards the next event, hopefully your "Biggie" and the one that will progress you up a level. For the next two events you will be operating at your optimum and as long as your drive factor is still high and a relative amount of success has been achieved you could just carry on competing. In any event or phase, CLOSURE must be made and DOWNTIME must be enforced to refresh body, mind and spirit before engaging into another phase of events. This helps revive your reason for self motivation. So, work hard, play hard and get away from it. You should never play in more than four events in a row. Better vision = better golf A new series brought to you by Sir Nic Rose (Dip-Optom(SA)FOA(SA)Wits 1976) Golfers all have one thing in common: they want to strike the ball more precisely, improve their handicap and get more enjoyment from the game. In my life I've been involved in various sports that require high definition vision and extreme precision to excel: combat shooting, polo, helicopter flying, show jumping and motor racing. Now as a leisure golfer I have also found that the crisper, clearer and better your vision, the better your game.

Problem no 1: Glare As golf is an outdoor sport, golfers often find that glare from the sun impairs their game. Even for non-prescription wearers the correct choice of sunglasses is of primary importance Most off-the-shelf sunglasses are not available with choices of lens colour. Sunglass lens colour is often a matter of aesthetics with no consideration for the practicallity of changing light conditions and what the different lens colours actually do for your vision. People may see what frame they think suits them best and then go with the lenses that are already fitted into that frame, not knowing that there are a lot of things to consider when choosing a set of lenses. After all you are buying the sunglasses for the lens to protect your eyes and to allow you to see properly.

Other colours are specific to particular sports. Golf specific lenses generally highlight greens and blues making a white ball stand out against green grass and a blue sky. It goes without saying that you also need to make sure that the lenses provide adequate UV Protection as the cumulative effect of UV will cause a chemical reaction with the crystalline lens in your eye causing it to loose transparency and thus clarity.

Problem no 2: Precision

When do you want to wear your sunglasses? Are they just for golf? For motoring and golf? Or just for social?

Technology has now reached the point where lenses can be specifically engineered for specific activities and environments. Golf specific lenses are intended to make you see more.....more detail, more contrast, more depth. Golf requires acute visual abilities not only to follow a long ball but also to analyse the direction of the growth of grass when analysing a put. These together with fluctuating light conditions make the demands on visual ability quite specific. Inferior lenses can cause "prism shift" or magnification, making a hole appear shifted from its true position.

Consistency in the golf game is an element each and every golfer would like, irrespective of whether our handicap is a high or a low one. Since the average male handicap in South Africa is 16 consistency needs to be relative to ability levels. How often have you heard an 18 handicapper say that all they want is to play to their handicap more often than not â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a comment perhaps expected from a scratch golfer?

But that does not mean to say a player cannot achieve selected positions which will make their swings more efficient. From a physical point of view, keeping the hands under the club will help to create effective sequencing. This means there is a flow of muscle contraction from core to extremity, and power is transferred effectively into the external object (golf club). This can only happen with proper alignment and mechanics of the body, and if the golf club is properly aligned with the body. Deviation from this can lead to the power being mis-directed resulting in poor contact of the club face with the ball, or even overload on muscle tendons and joints leading to injury.

I recently had the good fortune to be able to talk technique with South Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest golfer and he passed on a tip given to him by the legendary Ben Hogan â&#x20AC;&#x201C; arguably the greatest ball striker the game has seen. Mr Hogan believed that you should get your hands under the shaft at the top of the backswing irrespective of whether your swing is flat or upright to produce an efficient repetitive swing.

A correct hip height arm/shaft position will help you achieve the desired position at the top of the backswing. A poor position at hip height will often lead to a shaft that is either laid off or across the line which will produce inconsistent shot patterns.

Winner of 2014 Chase to the Investec Cup to receive R3.5 million After the resounding success of the inaugural Chase to the Investec Cup series which ended in the four-day Investec Cup tournament in March 2013, the 2013-14 series will now feature a lucrative bonus pool of R10-million, double that of 2013. The winner of the 2014 Chase to the Investec Cup will win R3.5 million, with the second-placed finisher winning R950,000, and third R700,000, whilst 30th spot in the bonus pool pay-out will take home R50,000. The Chase to the Investec Cup got underway at the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open in April of this year. Ulrich van den Berg is currently leading the Chase, 15 tournaments in, with 640 points. This is just under 20 clear of Titch Moore. With 900 points available to winners of the European Tour cosanctioned events on the Sunshine Tour summer calendar, there can still be dramatic changes to the top 30 as the Investec Cup in March 2014 looms closer and closer.

New Survey: Spain still Europe’s No.1 golf destination A new study of European golfers reveals that Spain remains the No.1 travel destination for visitors from the UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia, with more than 28% of respondents playing golf in the country over the past 12 months. Of the 28.5% of golfers who travelled to Spain to play golf, 12.7% went to the Costa del Sol, 3.9% went to the Costa Brava region, 3.2% visited the Canary Islands and 8.7% went to other areas. The research also revealed the popularity of other destinations with 17% visiting Portugal, 16.1% travelling to Great Britain & Ireland, 7.5% booking trips to Turkey, 7.1% visiting France and 6.9% booking long-haul golf trips to the USA. The Spanish study also revealed that a golfer’s na36

tionality impacts on their choice of region they are likely to visit, with British and Scandinavian golfers preferring the Costa del Sol; French golfers more likely to visit Costa Brava; and German golfers travelling to all regions, including the Canary Islands. Some of the key contributing factors that put Spain ahead of its rivals was the standard and range of the country’s golf courses, consistent levels of high quality accommodation and the favourable year-round climate.

164,000 years of golf in Mossel Bay? Scotland might think it invented golf - but at a stretch you could argue that a golf course in Mossel Bay invented culture.

s with all new property developments, the founders of Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort were required to commission an environmental impact assessment (EIA) as part of the application process for permission to build. But who could possibly have imagined that the archaeological survey that Jonathan Kaplan and Peter Nilssen made as part of this EIA would change the way the whole world thinks about the beginnings of modern human behaviour – and put the Caves under the Pinnacle Point Golf Course as the very birthplace of both culture and technology? As soon as he had an inkling of what they’d found, Dr. Nilssen called in Professor Curtis Marean of the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at the Institute of Human Origins at Arizona State University - and the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project was born. But it wasn’t just the archaeology that was significant here: the Caves also contain information on ancient climates and environments, and by 2005, the SACP4 project had been created to study them.It would go on to become the biggest scientific project of its kind in the world – and its work continues to this day. What the archaeologists have found was that (amongst many other things) this is where people first began systematically harvesting shellfish from the sea; where we first began using ochre – the first ingredient of the ancient painter’s palette; and where we first used fire to heat stone, and so anneal it to create a more workable material that produces a more consistent product when you’re manufacturing stone tools. And that much of this happened around 164,000 years ago. 40

The first results of the scientists’ work were published in 2007, but it wasn’t until this year that the Pinnacle Point Caves became accessible to the public via the ‘Point of Human Origins Experience.’ These tours – presented by Dr. Nilssen in collaboration with the Pinnacle Point Homeowners Association, the Oystercatcher Trail, and Prof. Marean - are usually limited to just twelve guests because of the sensitive nature of the material that still lies untouched in the Caves. And here’s the good news: if you take part in one of these tours, a full 20% of your ticket price goes to a fund which Prof. Marean and the Homeowners Association use for the conservation and maintenance of the Caves, the access walkways, and the environment around them. “Peter begins every Point of Human Origins Experience with a presentation on the significance of the archaeology, and he also focuses on the importance of our relationship with the environment of Mossel Bay which allowed our species to survive a near-extinction event between about 150,000 and 200,000 years ago,” said Fred Orban, who manages the tours through his award-winning Oystercatcher Trail. “And as an appreciation to guests who visit the Caves, we always record their names on a roll of honour on our web site -www.humanorigin.co.za.” For more information – and to see some fascinating videos – please go to www.visitmosselbay.co.za/archaeology. Tournament preparations (behind the scenes) This month I will be talking about tournament preparations and the people behind the scenes that make a good event a great event.

hen it comes to big tournaments on your local course there are always great benefits that go along with good television coverage and good revenue for the club during and after the event. But most of all I will be talking about the behind the scenes work that happens to ensure a successful event on the course.

We have had the privilege to be the host of the Vodacom Origins of golf Final 2013 at St Francis Links, and what a great event this was. We had fantastic weather and a golf course to be proud of. The work on the course started 4months before the actual event, work that included a larger driving range tee, more walk paths for the Proâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, bunker maintenance, building new tee boxes, servicing and sharpening of all mowers, different shifts for our staff to ensure that everyone knew what to do and many more projects. On a golf estate it is made more difficult to plan all the work with the least amount of disturbance to the residence, this is easier said than done when your day starts at 4am to get the work done before the first tee off time at 06h30. The whole idea during a tournament of this caliber is to get the golfers on the golf course without even noticing 54

any maintenance equipment or maintenance staff; it must look like the course got into tournament condition by magic. We succeeded with this by starting all mowing and bunker raking from the front and the back nine. The first maintenance group finished the 18th and the 10th holes and then worked through holes 11 to 17 and the second group started at the 9th hole and then finished holes 1-8 to move under the radar and move off the course without even being detected. Our rough was also cut every day with holes 1 and 9 being cut

first for the good first and last impression, and we also did the rough on the 10th and 18th first each day for the same reason, and then moved off the course when the golfers got close and during the afternoon shift we finished the rest of the rough behind the field to ensure that we get all the work done in time to start the next shift at 4 am again the next morning. During big tournaments we take special care of the greens and the bunkers seeing that this is where matches can be won or lost. We made use of headlamps for each staff member to ensure that they rake each bunker to the correct standard throughout the course even when it is dark. The procedures were followed every day to ensure that everyone knew what was expected from them. We also had test runs prior to the tournament to ensure that we get rid of all the glitches in our procedures before the tournament started. If I may give some advice to golf courses looking at hosting bigger events, it will be to allocate certain tasks to certain people ahead of the tournament and not to deviate from this plan during the event, if every person knows what is expected from them then it makes supervision and standard control so much easier!

with so much great golf courses and players! I hope you get a small insight into the world of a Golf Course Superintendent and tournament preparations that goes along with big events, this was just the tip of the iceberg, but I hope you found it interesting.

For big tournaments we look at the course with a new perspective, seeing that we need to think about television coverage and spectators viewing the golf. Your course should be the showpiece that people would want to come and play after seeing it for the first time, I think we succeeded with that and we hope to see many new golfers coming to visit us soon.

Pace wins the Sanya Ladies Open in China Lee-Anne Pace put the seal on a fantastic week in South African professional women’s golf with victory at Sanya Ladies Open in China last month. Just seven days ago, Pace was nominated for the 2013 Sportswoman of the Year award. On the same day, the WPGA launched the Sunshine Ladies Tour, and then South Africa’s first lady of professional golf made the week even more spectacular when she came from behind to win her third title this season with a play-off victory at Yalong Bay GC. The 32-year-old Mossel Bay pro lagged one stroke behind overnight leader Ye Na Chung of Korea going into the final round, but in pure Pace style, rallied with a final round two-under-par 70 to tie rookie Yu Yang Zhang at 13-under-par 203 at the end of regulation play. Pace showed her grit and determination with a perfectly timed 20-foot putt for birdie to beat the Zhang at the first play-off hole. “I love it here and it’s a really nice feeling to come back and win here again,” said Pace. “I started to get really pumped up towards the end and all the feelings came back from 2010 when I won here and I made a birdie on 16 in 2010 so I was really pumped up to go.” In a sense, it was poetic justice for Pace after she slipped and fell in her hotel room last year, injuring her elbow on broken pieces of mirror.

Where good players become tour players ! Players like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy struck it big and fast at a young age, but extra-ordinary success is limited to a select few in professional golf. The rest have to start at the bottom, graduate from feeder Tours, slog it out and pay their dues and hope experience will carry them to the highest echelons in the sport.

or many decades, the PGA and European Tours have been fed by a vast network of mini-tours that provide start-up professionals and aspirant amateurs with a competitive platform across the two continents. In fact, the European’s Challenge Tour and Web.com Tour in America both started life as mini-tours and today, are the primary feeders for the world’s two most prominent playing circuits. For as many years, South African players have really one had only two options: while the cream from the amateur ranks received golf scholarships to American colleges and universities and graduated to mini-tours, the rest had to make the leap to the pro ranks without a bridge or safety net. But, as the Sunshine Tour has grown in stature and size over the last decade, too many talented amateurs started falling through the cracks due to their inability to cope with the “big picture” – the pressure of qualifiers, travel, expenses and the standard of competition. The numbers dictated the necessity for a second tier feeder Tour and the scene started changing with the launch of the IGT Challenge Pro Tour in 2008. Billed as the Tour Where good players become Tour Players, the IGT Tour initially provided a competitive base for amateurs only to test and hone their skills and fit neatly in the gap between the amateur ranks and paid circuit. Soon, however, the IGT Tour expanded to give professionals who failed to make the grade, a second pass at success. “We are a developmental Tour that caters for both male and female amateurs and professionals and we strive provide a competitive platform for the players to develop, to improve, to acclimatise to the pro environment and to make an educated decision about their future,” explains commissioner Cois du Plooy. “We cater to primarily to amateurs looking to turn professional, professionals who lost their cards, and those who just missed - the often forgotten ones.

“While some of our regulars have gone back to the amateur circuit, while a lot of players have tasted success on the Sunshine Tour. Our biggest success story was top SA amateur Danie van Tonder, who cut his teeth on the IGT Tour in 2011, got his card and won the 2012 Sunshine Tour’s Rookie of the Year Race. But there are many others who have succeeded to stay on Tour.” In the last two years, 44 IGT Tour players have secured their Sunshine Tour cards. Du Plooy believes this is a direct result of the Race to Q-School series, which launched in 2010. “We play 35-40 tournaments a year on the regular Tour and all our events are 54-hole or 72-hole tournaments, just like they would experience on the Sunshine Tour,” he explained. “The Race to Q-School is an additional series of 12 events at the end of the season, specifically geared to prepare the players for golf ’s most gruelling test. “We set up the courses to test them, tucking pins into tough spots and moving tees back. It has proven extremely popular, especially among the amateurs looking to turn pro.” In addition to paying the Q-School entry fees for the top IGT Tour players after the Race to QSchool, Du Plooy is also offering the leading IGT player at the 2014 Sunshine Tour Q-School a huge incentive. “We secured a R100,000 sponsorship that will be paid out over 10 months to the leading player. We felt that the top player deserved to be acknowledged, and assisted. The rookie year is tough, because in addition to the pressure to perform, there is a lot of travelling involved and the financial pressure is huge.” The Orange Crab Race to Asia series in 2013 was another new addition. The series ran over seven tournaments and the top five top players received a fully paid spot to play in four top events in Asia.

When I won in Asia, I was very isolated and I lacked a support structure. Now I have so many people in my corner. The IGT Tour is great for guys like me with no status but still needing to stay competitive. I’m able to keep my hand in it and work on the small things that still need sorting out. And it’s kind of fun to play against the amateurs to see what we are going to be up against in the near future.” ILISKE VERWEY: Former Sanlam SA Amateur champion “The LET Q-School is absolutely gruelling and I was totally unprepared last year. I’ve been playing the IGT Tour this year and the Race to Q-School is the final step to getting mentally fit and really competitive ahead of Tour School. Playing against the men really gets my competitive juices going. I keep my focus better and, even when my game is not in top form, I push myself to score. Mental preparation is so important. Did Tiger cheat? GOLF Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee said he "went too far" in accusing Tiger Woods of bending the rules. In a column written for the Golf.com website, Chamblee pointed to several rules gaffes involving Woods this season. In an interview on Golf Channel's "Golf Central" program - his first televised comments on the matter - Chamblee said it was wrong to insinuate Woods cheated. "Cheating involves intent," Chamblee said. "There's no way that I could know with 100 percent certainty what Tiger's intent was in any of those situations. That was my mistake." In the article, Chamblee gave Woods an 'F' grade for his 2013 campaign. While Woods won five times in 2013, Chamblee said he was "a little cavalier with the rules". November/December 2013

Simon Dyson facing prospect of European Tour ban following his disqualification from the BMW Masters European Tour may ban Simon Dyson after his disqualification for signing for an incorrect score in the second round of the BMW Open Simon Dyson could face a three-month suspension from the European Tour after being charged on Thursday with a serious breach of the rules and summoned to appear before a disciplinary committee. David Garland, director of tour operations, decided that extra investigation was necessary after the Yorkshireman was disqualified last week for tapping down a spike mark with his ball in the third round of the BMW Masters in Shanghai. After an initial report that claimed he had “no recollection” of the incident, officials are understood to have collected evidence on other violations of which Dyson, a six-time winner on tour, has been accused this season. 29 Year winning drought ended The 2013 SA IPT ended in utter elation and delight for our Gauteng North team, who ended a 29 year winning drought with an outstanding performance at the 2013 South African Inter-Provincial at Rustenburg GC

The 2013 champions ended their campaign in terrific style by handing KwaZulu-Natal a decisive 9.5 – 2.5 drubbing in the final round to put the seal on an unbeaten record in the week-long premier team championship. “I said I needed everything they have and the guys delivered,” said the delighted skipper. “From the first match to the last, the guys played for the team. We came here as a unit, played as unit and we’ve won as a unit. We had a lot to prove, and I’m really proud of the fact that we didn’t lose a single match. Our record speaks volumes about the character, strength and commitment of the players on this team.” Gauteng North president, who also did duty as manager this week, was equally proud. “The last time Gauteng North lifted this trophy, we were still called Northern Transvaal, so there was a lot of pressure on these boys to deliver,” said Few. “We were the underdogs coming into this week, but our players stood their ground. I applaud each and every player on their commitment, their support for their fellow players and their fighting spirit.”

Keeping Track Of Golf’s Global Expansion Since the announcement that golf would make its return to the Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, many in the golf business have speculated about the potential impact the game’s inclusion would have on the growth of golf in South America and around the world. And if golf development and participation do expand as a result of the worldwide exposure and potential increased government support given the sport, will we be able to measure and track this growth? (this report courtesy of NGF) The R&A and the National Golf Foundation (NGF) were concerned that the answer to this question was “no” – that golf lacked a method of accurately tracking the global growth of the game. After much deliberation on how this could be accomplished, the R&A and NGF agreed that tracking worldwide golf course supply would provide a reasonable and acceptable proxy for golf participation and the growth of the game itself. Thus, the International Golf Facility Database project was conceived.

an arduous and painstaking process to identify, through multiple sources and methodologies, all existing golf facilities and new projects. However, the effort was ultimately very productive and rewarding, as the information gathered has been standardized into a single, accurate and comprehensive database of the world’s golf courses. Though the project is ongoing and will require continuous tracking of information on existing and new golf facilities being planned or constructed, golf now has a tool that can be used to measure the game’s overall size and growth.

How Big is Golf? Through September 2013, more than 18,350 golf facilities* in 200 countries outside the United States have been identified. While the vast majority of the world’s golf courses have been identified and entered into the database, new courses continue to be found. In late 2010, with the support of the R&A and 15 of golf ’s leading companies, NGF undertook the ambitious task of developing a definitive worldwide database of golf facilities. It has proved to be November/December 2013

The project has confirmed that golf is widely dispersed, but highly concentrated. The U.S. contains about 47% of the world’s golf facilities, and North America about 54%. Continued on p74

Other interesting findings include: • Outside the U.S., 70% of courses are located in just 10 countries • 20 countries hold 85% of supply • After the top 20 countries, the average number of facilities per country is only 15 • Only 8 countries have more than 500 golf facilities

How and where is Golf Growing? We’ve seen where golf exists today. Let’s take a look at where golf is growing, and how this growth is manifesting itself outside the United States. Research has uncovered approximately 270 projects that are currently under construction and another 405 golf facilities that are in advanced planning. Additionally, another 328 or so are in preliminary planning phases or on hold. These new projects comprise the development “pipeline” and represent roughly four to five years of growth. To put this new growth in perspective, consider the following: • Overall, there are 100 to 150 new courses opening per year worldwide. 74

• Net growth, excluding the U.S., represents about 1% annual increase in supply. • If all 675+ projects in planning and under construction were completed, they would increase the international supply by about 2.5%. As with existing golf course supply, new course development is widely dispersed, though not to the same degree. The top 20 countries account for roughly half of all new development activity. Remember that those same countries represent 85% of existing supply. Thus, golf is spreading disproportionately away from the developed golfing countries.

Where is Golf Contracting? The game is contracting primarily in countries where golf is already highly developed, and where recent growth in golf course supply outpaced growth in the number of golfers. In these countries, such as Japan, Canada, Australia, UK, and the U.S., golf is undergoing a correction between golf course supply and demand. The U.S. represents the most obvious example of this kind of correction. Over the 20-year period from 1986 to 2005, the U.S. saw more than 4,500

golf courses open. However, there subsequently has been a net reduction of about 500 18-hole equivalent golf courses, equating to a decline of about 3.3% from the peak supply year of 2005.

What Does this Mean for Golf Across the Globe? Taking into account the corrections being experienced in some of the most developed golf countries, we estimate that the net change in the annual growth of golf globally is negligible at this time. However, though international course openings are generally being offset by course closures in other places, golf is growing. Rather than focus on the marginal overall growth of golf, it is important to understand that golf is spreading across the globe. However, some question whether international growth is happening in a way that will be most beneficial to the game in the long run. For instance, roughly two-thirds of new golf construction is tourism related. And while new resort golf may be great for the overall economies of places such as Hainan Island in China, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, this type of development may not be the impetus for meaningful growth of the game among

the residents of those countries. (China, as an example, might be better served by more affordable golf facilities, rather than new high-end resort courses, to foster golf demand among its rapidly growing middle class). The NGF will explore these issues in an upcoming edition of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dashboardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. *Because many countries have unique classification systems for golf facilities, it was necessary to standardize the definitions of golf facilities and golf courses so that the international database is consistent across countries. In summary, golf facilities can comprise multiple golf courses (think Bethpage State Park, Torrey Pines, etc.). Golf courses must become more aware of who their customers are and the importance of taking a customer-centric approach to their operations. Golf course design and conditions are extremely important to golfers, and playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wants and needs will help shape golf courses in the future.

Design matters According to research, golf course design is the most important factor in attracting golfers to visit a new course. However, it is the condition of the playing surfaces that can give them the greatest satisfaction when they are there.

A most recent survey interviewed a variety of golfers, lapsed golfers and non-golfers of both sexes and a variety of ages. The research found golf course design tended to more important to men than women, although women tended to put greater importance on environmental issues. Design is also a more important factor among younger golfers. Interestingly, on a regional basis within the UK, course design is most important to golfers in Scotland. For low handicap players, it was evident that design of the golf course was of greater importance, even above the cost of play. When asked ‘What factors most attract visiting players?’, overall the design of the course came out top. In contrast, clubhouse factors, including ambience, food and drink service, shop merchandise and buggy availability, all fell in the lowest six ratings. The implication is that if you have a capital sum to invest, redesigning holes, upgrading bunkers and investing in tools to improve turf quality is going to assist in attracting more players, and deliver a better return than spending money on improving clubhouse facilities. Both surveys were consistent in spelling out the importance of a golf course’s greens and the quality of the putting surfaces. In the most recent survey, smooth rolling greens was the number one ‘on-course’ demand of golfers (followed by course design and visual appeal), and is the definitive 76

measure by which golfers judge a golf course. Naturally, other factors come into play, including the cost of membership or play, but the important message is that the golf course is top priority, both in terms of design to attract golfers and the quality of the greens to create an enjoyable experience.

Environmental attraction While the quality of the golf course is of paramount importance, the environment in which golfers play is a key element of their enjoyment and overall experience. Around three-quarters of players say viewing birds and wildlife on the course during their round is of high importance. In addition, nearly 70 per cent of players indicated their desire to see more environmental initiatives instigated by golf courses. Detail from the survey has reinforced the importance of environmental features, alongside the provision of great golf. The research found that women and older golfers place the highest levels of importance on environmental factors. It is also of significant interest to non-golfers, who may be attracted by a greener, more natural perception of golf and a sport that offers more to the wider community through the environment. While it might be assumed low-handicap golfers focus on their play, the research shows that they, too, are interested in their surroundings and the environment.

The survey revealed more than 70 per cent of players rated being able to easily find balls in the rough of high importance. Asked if they thought the inplay rough on their golf course was too thick, 56 per cent said it was. The research showed clearly that slow play is a frustration for many players, with rounds of more than three-and-half-hours triggering discontent. Interestingly, the results reveal slow play is also an issue for younger players and new entrants to the sport, as well as low handicap players. For club managers, slow play has a fundamental financial cost, when the number of rounds playable in a day is compromised. It is apparent that as well as good golf, players prefer courses that incorporate environmental features and support ecological initiatives.

Picture perfect Surveys have also looked at the channels that influence where golfers play. For the top courses, television and tournament coverage are the most influential factors, while reputation and history are also vital for the significant top tier. However, the internet – including golf course websites and golfers’ forums – is having an increasing role in influencing where golfers play.

On many courses where rough has become dominated by tangled thick course grasses, the response is often to hack back vegetation several times through the season, impacting on original course design and appearance. This practice carries a significant financial cost and can create risk of ecological damage.

The studies indicate the many nomadic golfers, who are not members of a club and regularly play different courses, may spend more than 40 minutes online selecting their next round – reinforcing the need for an effective web presence. The research also reveals that golfers themselves are important advocates of golf courses. Nearly three-quarters (73 per cent) of golfers become aware of new courses through word of mouth, while 68 per cent of golfers recommend their course to others.

Rough outline While the rough on a golf course defines the shape and playing lines of holes, and adds to the visual appeal of a course, research shows that golfers are clear about what they want on-course – to find their golf balls in the rough in a reasonable time and avoid slow play. SA makes it seven in a row at AAGTC

South Africa extended the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dominance at the African Amateur Golf Teams Championship by putting the finishing touches to an impressive week in Swaziland last month. A South African team has won every edition of the prestigious biennial event since the first event in 2001. Callum Mowat, Zander Lombard, NJ Arnoldi and Gerlou combined to claim South Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seventh successive triumph at the Royal Swazi Sun CC with a total score of 34-under-par 830, finishing 26 strokes clear of Zimbabwe. Although the Zimbabweans took the first round lead, South Africa matched their opening 12under-par 204 in the second round to wipe out a four shot deficit. The local heroes carried a 13 shot lead into the final round after a superb third round 202 and rallied for victory with a final round 216. 82

Just days after she was denied the Boland Championship title in a play-off, Gauteng North’s Carrie Park exacted her revenge with a runaway victory in the 33rd Ackerman Championship last month. The 16-year-old from Pretoria was still smarting from her defeat when she teed it up at Rondebosch GC but rounds of 74 and 72 saw her to a two-stroke lead at the 36-hole mark and this time Park was determined to finally go the full course. While the rest of the field struggled in winds gusting up to 50km per hour, Park bravely romped to a nine stroke victory with a final round 75. Her winning total of five-over-par 215 saw Park finish well clear of Vanessa Smith and Cara Gorlei from the Western Province. Cornforth bests Kruger at Boland Champs Birdie machine Mae Cornforth defeated top SA junior Magda Kruger to lift the Boland Championship Match Play title in a testing battle at Somerset West GC last month. The Potchefstroom teenager wielded a hot putter as she navigated her way past Elzanne Kent, Carrie Park and Nicole Garcia to book her berth in the final against Kruger. Conrforth beat Free State’s Kent 2&1, defeated Park from Gauteng North 1-up and reeled in five birdies against Ekurhuleni’s Garcia in the semi-final to win 2-up. Meanwhile Gauteng North’s Kruger downed local hope Maggie Minnie 3&2, handed Gauteng’s Shawnelle de Lange an 8&7 drubbing and thrashed Maggie du Toit from Southern Cape 6&5 to reach the final. Kruger birdied the first hole to take early control in the final and extended her lead with a second birdie at the sixth. Cornforth birdied the eighth hole, but lost the ninth to turn 2-down. Van Aswegen claims Indwe SA Senior Amateur Open Gavin van Aswegen thought life could not get any better after his son Tyrone secured his card for the 2014 PGA Tour in September, but barely a month later, the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington golfer celebrated an emotional victory in the Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Open Championship at Fancourt. Van Aswegen followed an opening 71 at the Montagu with a 74 in the second round at the Outeniqua for a one-over-par 145 total, and took one shot lead over defending champion Mellette Hendrikse, leading SA senior Francois le Roux and Thys Marais into the final round at the Montagu. But, in a season where the elements have so often shaped the outcome of events, Mother Nature once again ruled the roost. With play barely underway, lighting, thunder and torrential rain rendered the course unplayable and eventually forced the cancellation of the final round. This wiped out the chance of back-to-back titles for Hendrikse or a first Indwe SA Senior Amateur Open title for Le Roux, but for 59-year-year old Van AsweNovember/December 2013

Tandi on Tour Yet another season on the Ladies European Tour almost draws to a close with only 4 events remaining on the schedule, one is inclined to look back at the tournament season and review or reflect.

nfortunately the Ladies European Tour suffered the loss of 6 events on the schedule as well as many prize fund purses being reduced. This however was no problem or issue for the likes of Lee Ann Pace and Ashley Simon who have both had splendid seasons and produced marvellous results despite this fact. A great achievement girls! The main downside of losing events and then subsequently having prize funds reduced means the players, like myself, have to play less events and pick and choose which tournaments to play in order to save costs. The schedule and events are too spread out therefore meaning more long haul return flights to and from South Africa. It becomes too expensive to stay in Europe for the gaps between events which are sometimes 3 weeks!

These are all part and parcel of the difficulties on tour and being a professional golfer that sometimes get overlooked when one looks at the glitz and glamour of being a Tour Professional. An average week playing in Europe will cost between R12000 and R16000 and that is without a caddy! A Tour caddy will cost an additional +- R8000 before percentage breakdown and then a local

caddy will cost roughly R2000 for the week. So for the most part, players who don’t have a sponsor, which is 80% of the girls on tour, will not use caddies and always try stay in the most affordable accommodation to cut down on costs. The Rand – Euro exchange rates also make a huge difference when you are both earning and spending in Europe. In the smaller prize fund events, if a player makes the cut but does not finish top 30, you won’t break even for what it costs to get there. This might seem all very pessimistic but at the end of the day having a sponsor who covers tournament costs does alleviate mental stress and performance anxiety. For the same token, as long as the player is finishing inside the top 25 each week, they earn a living even though tour expenses are high. The purpose of this article is not to portray a negative picture of life on tour but rather an honest and realistic one for anyone who is considering professional golf as a career. WPGA breaks new ground with Sunshine Ladies Tour The Women’s PGA of South Africa (WPGA) has entered a new era in women’s professional golf in South Africa with the launch of the Sunshine Ladies Tour. The Sunshine Ladies Tour will kick off in February 2014 with a series of six qualifying tournaments, sponsored by Investec, Sun International, SuperSport and Dimension Data, and culminate in the inaugural Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies.

The leading 10 professionals at the end of the series will qualify for the prestigious finale, which will be played concurrently with the Sunshine Tour’s Chase to the Investec Cup from 20-23 March. WPGA chairman Margie Whitehouse, who has been the driving force behind the Sunshine Ladies Tour, hailed it as a giant step for women’s professional golf in South Africa. “Women’s professional golf in South Africa was in a wasteland since 2009, but the return of the South African Women’s Open as a Ladies European Tour co-sanctioned event in April 2012, sparked a revival in the sport,” Whitehouse explained. “When the new WPGA board was incorporated in October 2012, we acknowledged that our members and aspirant professionals were being forced to seek a competitive platform abroad. “We set about immediately to create a local competitive platform for our players and amateurs and we are absolutely delighted to have forged a strong alliance with the Sunshine Tour and to have Investec, Sun International, SuperSport and Dimension Data supporting the new Sunshine Ladies Tour.” Dimension Data, Sun International and SuperSport will sponsor one qualifying event each, while Investec will sponsor the remaining three tournaments and the prestigious Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies. “The six qualifying events will be 36-holetournaments and carry a prize fund of R100,000 each. We will run an Order of Merit to determine the leading 10 professionals that will qualify for the Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies, where the pros will compete with 10 invited Investec clients in a 54-hole stroke play tournament,” Whitehouse said. “The Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies carries a purse of R300 000, as well as a R100 000 donation to the amateur winner’s charity of choice.” The WPGA board will be making a further announcement regarding the dates and venues shortly, said Whitehouse. In the meantime, they are also hard at work securing more events, especially November/December 2013
