LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the Editor

Dear Mel

I have to smile every time I hear people moaning about LIV Golf and all the senseless criticism that is directed Greg Norman’s way. Ironically the value of a PGA Tour card has gone through the roof and it’s all due of the supposedly terrible people at LIV Golf. Despite all the howling and gnashing of teeth from those who call LIV a classic case of ‘sportswashing’ by the Saudis, with help from some sell out professional golfers, it took the PGA Tour only a few months to find millions of extra cash to expand tournament purses massively and announce a major overhaul of the tour schedule designed to retain elite players. PGA Tour players should be cheering their colleagues who have moved to LIV Golf and thanking Greg Norman for his efforts.

Thank you for writing in. I must tell you that we have been bemused at the level of hostility directed at LIV Golf and in some instances at ourselves for merely reporting on LIV Golf on our social media platforms. Many people support the idea of a new tour but there does seem to be an element out there who see red when they merely hear the name LIV Golf. From reading the comments on our posts, these people seem to be by and large non-golfers as their comments often make no sense at all. Competition is always a good thing and yes, the PGA purses have improved since the inception of LIV Golf. The various tours must get over themselves now and learn to work together. Regards

Whatever the PGA Tour looks like in five years, it will have been radically transformed by LIV Golf, and more than likely for the better. Regards Mel Cook

The Blue Label Development Tour events carry a R50 000 purse for each of the 10 one-day tournaments while expanding playing opportunities for players to sharpen their skills further.

Mclachlan has had a couple of near misses in this 10-tournament series which the Sunshine Tour and Blue Label have created to afford more players opportunities to play and earn money and order of merit points. He was runner-up at Services Golf Club in the fifth tournament of the series and he came third in the preceding event at Modderfontein. There were 10 tournaments in the series and

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S

GENERAL MANAGER

Shaun Oosthuizen - General Manager - Pretoria Golf Club 1. How long have you been in the golf industry and what made you choose this career? I started playing golf in 2010 and found a deep love for the sport. I went on to study golf in 2011 and found work in the industry where my career officially began. Through coaching and working as an apprentice I understood more and more about the game and so I wanted to be more in-volved. 2. Has it always been golf for you? Golf has always been my first choice, but I did investigate other opportunities and explored different options. 3. Did you ever play, or did you ever want to play on tour? Yes, I did want to play on tour through my studies and would still love the opportunity one day. 4. Who has been your biggest mentor? My father has been and will always be my biggest mentor. We still play together, and we love coaching each other to improve our games. He is playing better golf than me at the moment.

18

5. Describe a typical workday for you at Pretoria GC? I don’t have a typical day at the club as each day has its own surprises and challenges. I usually check in with all the staff early in the morning and have a quick trip around the club to make sure all is in order. Once in the office I will work on my emails and any other projects presented to me. 6. What are your biggest challenges currently at Pretoria GC The biggest challenge at the club is catching up on paperwork and maintenance as our previous office lady passed away unexpectedly due to Covid. May she rest in peace. Her death has had the club on the back foot and our committee has done a great job to keep this ship afloat. 7. Has golf grown in your opinion over the last 2 years? Here at the club, we haven’t seen that much growth over the past 2 years because of Covid but I believe with the hard work of our development team we are getting back on track. 8. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days,

what is your plan to attract people to the club? Affordable prices and excellent service is key to attract players to our club. We strive to give each player a day they can enjoy without asking a fortune. 9. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Pretoria GC? We do our best to have a marshal out on the course on busy days to help speed up play. 10. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Members are right but as the Manager of the club I need to make sure the club comes first and not an individual. My main objective is to make sure my members are happy and that the club is prosperous. 11. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? November | December 2022

Yes, I need to be available to work late at least once a week and participate in club related events over weekends. It does affect my personal life but it’s part of the opportunity and I’m making the best of it. Besides a golf course is not a bad place to be when working late… 12. What are your short & long-term goals? Short-term: Building my career to create a stable income for me and my wife as we have a baby on the way. Long Term: My goal at the moment is to sell my house in 3-4 years after a few renovations done and move to a better location and a house more suited to our family needs. 13. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy playing golf in my free time if I can but these days, I will rather spend it with my wife or spend some time around my house we just bought a year ago.

The golfing challenge on the Par 72 course was developed around the meandering Jukskei River with its undulating terrain and is a truly spectacular layout. The river is in play on six holes with the rolling terrain providing a challenge to both amateurs and professionals and affords breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape. Dams, water features, natural rocky outcrops, weeping willows as well as abundant birdlife provide a tranquil country ambiance. JOBURG OPEN HELPS DRIVE SA'S GLOBAL GOLF SUCCESS

Oliver Bekker, South Africa’s latest DP World Tour star, has confirmed his place in Novembers Joburg Open and believes the tournament will help to open doors for even more South Africans to become household names in European golf within the next five years. Bekker is back on local fairways following a successful debut season on the DP World Tour in which he had eight top-10s and a runner-up finish in the Catalunya Championship as he has climbed into 33rd place on the DP World Tour Rankings. His focus is now on a strong run of Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournaments in South Africa, beginning with the Joburg Open at Houghton Golf Club from November 24-27, 2022. At various levels of South African professional golf the Joburg Open has provided a strong sense of opportunity for the country’s golfers and their global aspirations, while at the same time also helping to transform the South African golf landscape through its support of historically disadvantaged professionals competing in this event. Thriston Lawrence claimed his maiden DP World Tour victory in the 2021 Joburg Open and went on to win a second title on the Omega European Masters this year as well as play in his first Major in the 150th

22

Open in St Andrews. And Dylan Naidoo, who has played in the Joburg Open since he was an amateur and is a member of the Sunshine Tour’s Papwa Sewgolum Class for historically disadvantaged golfers, will return to the tournament this year as a true inspiration after breaking through with his maiden Sunshine Tour victory in the SunBet Challenge Sun Sibaya this year. “I’ve always believed that with our DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournaments, and then the added Challenge Tour co-sanctioned tournaments, that we’re going to have a lot of South Africans making it onto the DP World Tour. We’re going to make an impact over there.

We’ve got so much talent in this country and you just need the opportunity to get there, and for that door to open and to get that chance to get in there. I’m sure a lot of our players will stay on the DP World Tour for a very long time, and that we’ll also see a lot of South Africans coming through in the next five years that will be household names in Europe for a long time to come. It’s good to see the South African players making their presence felt on the DP World Tour. It’s exciting,” said Bekker.

John Collier Survey CLUB OF THE YEAR! At the recent annual conference of the Club Management Association of Southern Africa (CMASA) held as San Lameer, Paul Leishman and his team at Bryanston Country Club were awarded the CAMASA “blue ribbon” award as CLUB OF THE YEAR. This award was in recognition of professional standards in management, financial control, productivity, service and efficiency of the club’s ongoing education and best practice. CMASA also presented Bryanston CC with a Certificate of Recognition for their commitment and support of environmental sustainability. These awards are no “flash in the pan”, but evidence of a long-term commitment to compliance and excellence over the years. This process started well before 2016, and in the same year Bryanston CC achieved a John Collier BRONZE Level certification for environmental compliance and good governance. It did not take the club long to raise its game to GOLD Level status and to hold it there over the years. In 2021 – 2022 the club was once again awarded GOLD Level status.

In terms of the Natal Midlands, the John Collier Survey has measured the environmental compliance and good governance journeys of two clubs, namely Gowrie Farm and Bosch Hoek. Both clubs have must play golf courses and Bosch Hoek, which enjoys the pedigree of having been designed by Robert Grimsdell, was opened in 1963. Gowrie Farm, which is soon to be an 18 holes’ layout, was originally designed by Guy Smith and opened in 2007. Both these courses are set in a particularly beautiful part of South Africa and offer a very scenic and enjoyable playing experience. (See our special feature on KZN Midlands on page 64) In terms of environmental compliance and good governance, their journeys so far have taken Bosch Hoek to BRONZE Compliance Level and Gowrie Farm to SILVER Compliance Level for 2021 - 2022. A wonderful achievement. Why not reap the benefits of participating in the 2022 - 2023 John Collier Annual Survey.

JOHNSON CLAIMS LUCRATIVE LIV DOUBLE WITH TEAM VICTORY American Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces squad won the inaugural LIV Golf Series team championship at Trump National on Sunday to claim the $16 million top prize.

“Personally, my season, yeah, you add up the numbers and it was great, but I played good - I didn’t play my best, so it always could be better, but that’s golf,” Johnson said.

Johnson, who earned a reported $150 million by signing up to the Saudi-backed venture, pockets another $4 million as his share of the team prize money to add to the rewards he gained through winning the debut season’s individual title.

“But I’m just happy that the 4 Aces just won this tournament. That’s all that matters,” he said.

Between team prizes throughout the season and individual event wins, plus his $18 million bonus for claiming the year’s individual crown, Johnson ends the inaugural LIV campaign with an eye-watering $35 million in earnings.

November | December 2022

Johnson’s all-American team - featuring Talor Gooch, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez - shot a combined 7-under 281, winning by a shot over Cameron Smith’s all-Australian Punch GC. British Open champion Smith shot a superb 65

The winning team were sprayed by champagne on the final green on a day in which $34 million in prize money was distributed to the four teams in the final. While the celebrations were genuine and the team format certainly generated enthusiasm from players and attracted a decent crowd to the South Florida course owned by former US President Donald Trump, the first LIV season has caused division within golf that shows no signs of ending.

“Just look at what happened today,” he said. “Obviously, yeah, it was a team effort, but coming down the 18th hole, it ended up coming down to me and Cam playing the 18th hole to see who wins the team championship. “You couldn’t have drawn it up any better, but I think that’s what LIV is. Look at all the fans. Look how much fun they have. I think this season went incredible and I think next season is going to be even better.”

Reports suggest LIV Golf is looking to add more top players to its lineup ahead of an expanded 14-event second season. Johnson said LIV will go from strength to strength.

SA'S DEAN BURMESTER EARNS PGA TOUR CARD

South African golfer Dean Burmester was among the 25 golfers to earn his PGA Tour card for the 2022/23 season at the Korn Ferry Tour finals. Following his tied for fourth at the Albertsons Boise Open and T46th at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship Burmester ensured his first PGA Tour card via The Finals 25. “Now I got goosebumps from where I’m going to, number one tour in the world and the best job in the world and I’m just so excited. “Only when I realised I was in and that I’ve given myself to be on the PGA Tour. With everything is going on in golf, to have an opportunity to play the greatest tour in the world is super exciting.” Last year, Burmester found his way back to the winner’s circle as he clinched the Sunshine Tour’s PGA Championship and then claimed his second DP World Tour title at the Tenerife Open in Spain.

30

Despite not tasting victory this year so far, Burmester captured two runner-up finishes at the Dimension Data Pro-Am and Steyn City Championship. Burmester then finished T10 at the Scottish Open and earned a career-best finish at a Major when he finished T11 at the 150th Open at St Andrews Old Course. “To do well in the Scottish Open and the Open, my agent called me up and said, I have enough points to get on the Korn Ferry Finals and I definitely going to play. There’s no way, I’m backing down on that,” said Burmester. “So much blood, sweat and tears. There have been good and hard times. My caddie and I have been together for four years and he has been through a lot, caddying for over 17 years and it’s the first time he’ll be on the PGA Tour.”

DAISIES DELIGHT HOME CROWD WITH SA WOMEN’S IPT WIN Gauteng North rallied to win their first Women’s Inter-Provincial title since 2013 when they edged defending champions Western Province in the final round of matches at Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate. After a narrow 1.5 – 2.5 loss to Central Gauteng in the opening round, the Daisies routed Southern Cape 5 – 1 in the second round to reignite their title hopes. Going into the final round, the mathematics was simple. “We need to beat Western Province and we were counting on Southern Cape to dismiss Central Gauteng,” the Gauteng North A team captain Bronwyn Doeg said. Thankfully the hosts got both their wishes. “We knew it wouldn’t be easy and we really needed Southern Cape to play their part, but the team was very determined. Every member on the team knew their role and goal for the day, and all we had to do was manage what we could control and let the chips fall. “Winning The Women’s Inter Provincial Tournament starts a new era for the Gauteng North Daisies and will motivate us to go from strength to strength.” “Playing on home soil, with our families and supporters out there rooting for us, made it possible for us to step up and rise to victory. The vibe and energy that we had with all the supporters and family really kept us going. This was a real team effort, and everyone put their hand up and delivered.” Fifteen-year-old Kleynhans topped the Most Valued Players’ List with her perfect score.

36

Central Gauteng rookie Shannon Berry shared second with Doeg on 5 points, edging out Chen from Western Province by half a point. Traut rounded out the top five with 4 points. At the start of the week, Western Province A and B had a double reason to celebrate when the two teams scooped victories in the A- and B-Division Stroke Play seeding round respectively. A-DIVISION LOG – A 1 (Pos-Union-Played-Won-Drawn-Lost-Points-Matches won) 1 Gauteng North A (3, 2, 0, 1, 4, 11) 2 Central Gauteng (3, 2, 0, 1, 4, 10) 3 Western Province A (3, 1, 0, 2, 2, 8) 4 Southern Cape (3, 1, 0, 2, 2, 7) A-DIVISION LOG – A 2 (Pos-Union-Played-Won-Drawn-Lost-Points-Matches won) 1 Ekurhuleni (3, 2, 1, 0, 5, 13.5 2 KwaZulu-Natal (3, 2, 1, 0, 5, 12) 3 Boland (3, 1, 0, 2, 2, 9.5) 4 Eastern Province (3, 0, 0, 3, 0, 1)

BRAVE BORDER CLINCHES SA WOMEN’S IPT PROMOTION Border’s Demi Flanagan, Kesha Louw, Millie Dondashe and Sanet Pieterse had a huge incentive to win the promotion battle in the 61st South African Women’s Inter-Provincial Tournament and they pulled it off with a classy performance at Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate. “We won the B-Division stroke play qualifier last year but lost out to Western Province B in the match play,” Flanagan, the captain, explained. “When we learned that the seeding round would be abolished in 2023, it was all the motivation we needed to finish the week at the top.” “I am stoked for the team. We don’t get to play or practice together much because we are in different areas, but when we got on the golf course, we come together as a unit and we play for each other. We’ve worked really hard for this, and it’s absolutely fantastic that we’ll be teeing it up in the top draw next year.”

B-Division LOG – B 1 (Pos-Union-Played-Won-Drawn-Lost-PointsMatches won)1 Border (3, 1, 2, 0, 4, 9.5) 2 Gauteng North B (3, 1, 1, 1, 3, 10) 3 Western Province B (3, 1, 1, 1, 3, 7.5) 4 Mpumalanga A (3, 1, 0, 2, 2, 9) B-Division LOG – B 2 (Pos-Union-Played-Won-Drawn-Lost-PointsMatches won) 1 North West (3, 2, 1, 0, 5, 11.5) 2 Free State (3, 2, 0, 1, 4, 13.5) 3 Mpumalanga B (3, 1, 1, 1, 3, 8.5) 4 Limpopo (3, 0, 0, 3, 0, 2.5)

In the B-Division B2 Section, North West came up trumps after defeating log leaders Free State 3.5 – 2.5 in a battle royale on the final day.

The combined SA Amateur Championships comprise the Women’s SA Stroke Play Championship, which determines the A- and B-Division fields for the SA Women’s Match Play Championship. The men contest the 36-hole stroke play the Proudfoot Trophy, with the leading 64 advancing to the match play stage of the SA Amateur. “We are delighted to bring the SA Amateur Championships to KZN and Mount Edgecombe,” explained GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn. “It will be the first time the women return to the coast since 2018, and 2019 for the men.

JUSTIN ROSE REVEALS WHAT COMPANY MADE HIS MYSTERIOUS NEW CUSTOM 'JR' IRONS

Justin Rose recently revealed a mysterious set of irons, showcasing no other logos aside from his personal “JR” logo. It used to be easier to identify the brand of irons that a PGA TOUR player uses. These days, it’s becoming more difficult. In the current golf equipment landscape, ultra-personalized custom irons are growing in popularity among PGA TOUR players, whereas they historically would use irons that were available to the public on the retail market. The tide is shifting. In 2022 alone, Adam Scott debuted custom Miura Golf-made irons with his logo on them, and Maverick McNealy used a custom set of Callaway

Apex prototype irons – a set that included an “11iron” – throughout the year. Justin Thomas also has been using a “1-of-1” custom set of Titleist irons that meet his specs. There may be another big name added to that list soon. In a Halloween-day post on Instagram, former FedExCup champion Justin Rose revealed an equally mysterious set of irons, showcasing no other logos aside from his personal “JR” logo. The golf world was abuzz trying to figure out which equipment manufacturer designed and built the set.

NE WS CLIP continued from page 43.. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long to find the answer. Rose revealed shortly after, in a comment on the GolfWRX Instagram page, that Custom Golf Works at Gatwick Studio custom-built the irons. He later confirmed via Instagram DM with GolfWRX that the iron heads themselves were manufactured by Miura, much like Scott’s custom irons. While Rose is not entirely positive if and when the custom “JR” irons will go into play, he’s giving them serious consideration.

When Rose switched to Titleist clubs earlier in the year, it was simply because the irons won out over other brands he was testing. For Rose, changing irons wouldn’t be anything new; since becoming an equipment free agent in 2020, Rose has used multiple sets of irons in PGA TOUR competition, including TaylorMade P-730 irons, Mizuno MP-20 irons, TaylorMade P-7MC irons, and Titleist 620 MB irons. This time around, it seems Rose’s new custom “JR” irons are made especially for his look and preferences, so maybe his iron search has reached a finish line.

Most players do the bulk of their equipment testing in tandem with a company’s reps – often at tournaments, a company’s home office or the player’s home course – but Rose has used Custom Golf Works, an independent, off-site clubfitting facility, multiple times this year. They also helped fit him for the Titleist 620MB irons he was using earlier this year. The fitter boasts a decade of fitting players on the DP World Tour but also is open to the public. It isn’t affiliated with a single equipment brand.

SMIT JOINS SA STARS WITH VODACOM ORIGINS FINAL VICTORY Combrinck Smit added his name to an impressive list of Sunshine Tour stars who have all won on the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series as he clinched the Final of this year’s series in a playoff at the Pinnacle Point Estate. Smit overcame a double-bogey on the 16th in regulation play and then battled through a sudden-death playoff against the experienced Jake Redman to claim victory. With his win on this series, Smit joins the likes of Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Dean Burmester, George Coetzee, Justin Harding, Thriston Lawrence and a host of

Redman had earlier signed for a 68 to lead in the clubhouse and was then joined by Smit following his 72. Both played parred the par-five 18th as the first playoff hole. Playing the hole again, Redman pulled his drive into the fynbos on the left and was forced to take a penalty drop, from where he went on to make a double bogey. Smit parred the hole to take the title.

relieved Smit, who also wins a Jaguar F Type for use until the end of the 2022/23 season.

“It’s never a great thing playing against a good friend and such a great guy as Jake in a playoff. But somebody has to win and thank goodness it could be me,” said Smit. He started the final round with a one-stroke lead and admits it was a hard day on the fairways, which began with a bogey at the first and then included that double bogey on the par-five 16th.

The tournament marked the end of yet another successful season of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series, which since 2004 has been the backbone of the Sunshine Tour’s winter schedule.

“I don’t really know what happened today. There were some surprising shots out there. I’ve clipped the fynbos quite a couple of times this week and I was a bit shocked after the 16th. But I just told myself to keep going and that I still had a great chance to win the tournament. I got it done in the end,” said a

FRANSCHHOEK’S WHITSON CROWNED 2022 VODACOM ORIGINS OF GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPION Franschhoek amateur golfer Craig Whitson enjoyed a dream debut on the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series as he teamed up with Sunshine Tour professional Malcolm Mitchell to win the National Final of this prestigious pro-am series at the Pinnacle Point Estate, in what is quite aptly called “Iconic Mossel Bay”. Whitson, a nine handicap who plays his golf at Pearl Valley, and Mitchell finished the 36-hole competition with 87 points and earned the title of 2022 Vodacom Origins of Golf champions, edging out Merrick Bremner and his amateur partner Marco dos Santos who finished second on 83 points.

when we came off the golf course I actually said to Malcolm that I’ve got a tear in my eye about the fact that it had to end. As amateur golfers we were treated like professionals,” said a delighted Whitson. “Malcolm was just wonderful to play with. We became like brothers over these two days. We had so much fun. The highlight for me was being exposed to what professional golfers are exposed to. It’s just an absolute treat to see up close how these professionals approach the game and the decisions they make on the golf course. It gives you newfound respect for them.”

“What a fantastic experience. This was my first experience of the Vodacom Origins of Golf and

“The Vodacom Origins of Golf tournaments are always a pleasure to play, and this week was that much more special for me. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner this week than Craig. It was great,” he said. This was the 18th season of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series on the Sunshine Tour. The National Final brought together the top five finishers from each of the previous regional tournaments played around South Africa this year in their quest to claim overall honours.

Bosch Hoek Golf Club

The KZN Midlands

Gowrie Farm Golf Course

The KZN Midlands is fairly vast, yet so often when one thinks of the area, Nottingham Road and the golf courses at Bosch Hoek and Gowrie Farm spring to mind. Only an hour and a half’s drive from Durban, Nottingham Road is a quaint town reminiscent of an English village. Bosch Hoek is one of the best 9-hole golf courses that you will ever find and their greens must be in the top three of all golf courses in South Africa. Gowrie Golf Course is now extending from 12-holes to 18-holes and with the doyen of South African golf, Dale Hayes, now teaming up with original designer Guy Smith, this already exquisite golf course is set to become even more desirable. Gowrie Farm is in the town itself whilst Bosch Hoek is 20 kilometres away. The area offers wonderful places to stay, an array of restaurants, coffee-shops, spas, diverse shopping and fascinating cultural attractions. If you are driving down to Durban, stop over for a night or two. If you live in Durban drive up for a short break. Either way, don’t drive past as you will be poorer for it.

Bosch Hoek – An Enduring Classic Bosch Hoek Golf Club is home to a nine-hole course that has an interesting history, as it formed part of a farm that was among the original Voortrekker claims to be settled in the 1850s. As farming methods improved in the region and the demand for farmland increased, the property was subdivided & sections sold. A century later and vastly reduced in size, Bosch Hoek was acquired by the legendary industrialist Charles Sydney ‘Punch’ Barlow who transformed it into a model farm, employing the most advanced farming methods and animal husbandry. Although it was something of a hobby for Barlow, it became a highly successful operation. It was in the early 1960s that an interesting connection was made between The River Club, an exclusive private golf club in Johannesburg, and Bosch Hoek. A group of influential businessmen had decided to form their own club in Bryanston, The River Club, and one of these founder members was Barlow. The celebrated course architect Robert Grimsdell was commissioned to design and construct the new club’s layout. A part of the contract Grimsdell undertook to lay out Barlow’s own nine-hole course on his farm in the Natal Midlands. The first shot on Bosch Hoek was played in 1963, thereafter for thirty November | December 2022

years the club remained in the private domain of Barlow and his friends. After Barlow died in 1979, his stepson Peter Gallo acquired the farm and continued to maintain the golf course as a private facility. In 1990, Gallo formed the Bosch Hoek Golf Club & Country Estate and sometime later sold the development to the homeowners of the estate – who in turn sold the golf course to South African entrepreneur, Ivan Clark. It was obvious that Grimsdell’s brief was to produce a highly playable layout, and for the beginner or higher handicap golfer this course certainly fits the bill. In 2013, the single-most significant upgrade of the golf course took place. The greens were improved to Bentgrass and a number of very exciting and significant improvements to the golf course were all ably carried out by South Africa’s leading golf course design, construction and maintenance company, Golf Data. The Clubhouse kitchen was also extended and state of the art kitchen equipment installed. The Men’s & Ladies’ change rooms were renovated and the Clubhouse Patio area was extended and upgraded. Bosch Hoek is one of those enduring classics that has remained faithful to its original design, and hopefully will be preserved so for generations to come.

Love Notties Sometimes, through adversity, unexpected events can unfold organically. This is how Love Notties evolved. Sparked by a “need to feed” during hard lockdown, the little village of Nottingham Road in the rural Kwa Zulu Natal Midlands, rallied together to feed 3 500 people. Initiated by the Nottingham Road Landowners Association Relief Fund and a quirky combination of a farmer, a midwife/golfer and a caravan park owner, these three ladies worked tirelessly with local volunteers, farmers and donors to ensure those most in need received food parcels.

November | December 2022

Deep rooted community building resulted in the formation of the Love Notties Non-Profit Company. The three core functions of education, environment, and humanity. A rewards-based programme was initiated where impoverished or unemployed people could volunteer their time recycling or cleaning the village in return for tokens. These tokens could then be redeemed for food or clothing at the Love Notties Shop. The clothing and linen have all been donated by locals and can also be purchased for cash. This money is used to supplement the buying of food to make up weekly food parcels.

In addition to supporting the local under resourced schools, The Dream Centre was initiated to create affordable and critical skills development, crucial to ending the cycle of poverty.

Julie Howe, Missy Hughes, and Sandra Berning continue to serve the Nottingham Road Community on a volunteer basis, juggling work, sanity and perhaps sneaking in a round of golf!

Love Notties aims to unite our community for positive change, as we believe we are better together, changing from me to we by creating a catalyst for transformation, hope and possibility. Their next major fund raiser is a two-day Love Notties Classic, Day one at Gowrie and Day two at Bosch Hoek in May 2023. This will become a very sought-after annual event, showcasing these two fabulous golf courses.

Hickory in South Africa and the Gowrie Farm connection The objective with the Hickory™ Golf SA Experiences is to let the participants play as per tradition with “no tees but sand” and certainly no “preferred lies” are allowed! A bagpiper might pipe the players onto the “links land” and players can often look forward to some interesting Scottish fayre from a “hickory menu” and perhaps a wee drappie or two might greet the players on completion.

The basic six-club hickory play set Hickory Golf was introduced to South Africa by Paul Adams who fell in love with ‘hickory’ a few years back when he played with hickories in Scotland and subsequently played in the World Hickory Open. Paul started collecting hickory sets, accumulated sufficient clubs to equip players to experience this form of the game and so Hickory™ Golf South Africa was born.

Experiences can comprise a few holes to gain an appreciation of how skilled golfers were in the 1800 and early 1900’s or maybe nine or even 18 holes of “competitive” hickory golf as played at the World Hickory Open Championship! Hickory™ Golf SA is ready to move to the next level and a new era is dawning; Gowrie Farm will become the “Home of Hickory™ Golf South Africa” which is an extremely exciting development that will provide a superb platform for many more golfers to “Play Traditional Golf in the Modern Era” through.

There are a number of supporters of Hickory Golf in South Africa including Dale Hayes as well as Louis Hattingh from SuperSport and the PGA Professional Dave Usendorff who both played in the first World Hickory Open Championship in which South Africa participated. South Africa has competed at the World Hickory Open Championship on four occasions and done extremely well with a third place in the Open Division and a Bronze Medal in the Handicap Division ….. and even winning the Team Challenge in 2014!

NAIDOO IS A SUNSHINE TOUR CHAMPION WITH SUNBET VICTORY Dylan Naidoo is acknowledged as one of the most talented young golfers in the country and the 24-year-old backed this up when he claimed his maiden Sunshine Tour title as he won the SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya at Umhlali Country Club by two shots. Naidoo – a member of the Sunshine Tour’s Papwa Sewgolum Class for historically disadvantaged professionals which is supported by Investec, SuperSport, Betway, VAT It, DNI, Credit Guarantee, Cobra Puma and TaylorMade, and The Papwa Foundation – said the key to his breakthrough title was becoming a creature of habit out on the golf course, and taking comfort from a set process. “The most important thing is that I felt I had the win coming. I’ve been playing very well for the last few weeks. It’s the culmination of having really good processes and discipline out on the course. Naidoo began the final round two shots off the lead and settled himself with a wonderful front nine that was bogey-free and featured back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes. But he was still a couple of shots behind Luke Brown until a brilliant eagle on the 489m par-five 10th saw the former Big Easy Tour golfer vault strongly into contention.

November | December 2022

Naidoo then targeted the short par-fours on the back nine, picking up birdies on three of them, and dropping a shot on the 15th, which he described as “a good bogey”. A pair of birdies on 16 and 17 beat back the tentacles of the chasing golfers trying to reach him at the top of the leaderboard. “My goal was just to turn under-par because I had not done it the whole week, so I got that job done on two-under, I played really solid,” Naidoo recalled. “We had 209 to the flag on 10, but we wanted to pitch it well short because the greens were really starting to firm up. It was a little downwind and my seven-iron pitched and bounced exactly where it needed to and I sank the eight-foot putt for eagle. Once the job was done with a four-under 67 leading him to six-under-par for the tournament, he was grateful for all the supporting cast to his biggest win yet in his fledgling golf career. “It’s taken thousands of hours of hard work and I could not have done it without the team around me – my sponsors, parents and loved ones – and everyone who helped along the journey. I’m just so ecstatic,” Naidoo said.

Golf course superintendent. Boschhoek Golf Club

1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further? I have been playing golf since the age of 10. I have always wanted to be involved with golf in some way, shape or form. I completed a turf grass management course at the Durban Technical College in 1997. Once completed, I was employed at Cato Ridge Country Club. From Cato Ridge I moved to Champagne Sports and worked under Trevor Livesey for my duration there. Thereafter I had the opportunity to work at Wentworth in the UK. Upon my return from the UK, in 2003, I began my journey at Bosch Hoek where I have been able to put my experience from courses in SA and the UK into use. In 2006 Bosch Hoek was then rated the Number One 9-Hole Golf Course in South Africa which was an accomplishment that cemented my passion for turf management and manicuring Golf Courses.

5th/14th Green What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? The best part is seeing the fruits of your labour after trying new strategies and adapting to the challenges that arise, as well as being appreciated for the work that has been done. There is no greater pleasure for me than seeing people enjoy the golf course that has been laid out for them. The worst part is things not going according to plan due to inclement weather or machinery malfunctions. 2. You are at Bosch Hoek GC, an inland course in the Natal Midlands, what is your biggest challenge maintaining a course in the Midlands? The weather is the biggest challenge because we have very cold winters which come with severe

86

frosts. The biggest challenges in summer is the rainfall and the added heat, which creates the perfect breeding ground for diseases in the grass. 3. With Bosch Hoek being a 9-hole golf course, what are the pro’s and con’s from your point of view? Pro’s - fortunately being 9-holes, we can get the golf course ready very early in the day which allows for golf to commence from 06H30. This brings in added revenue. We are also afforded the opportunity to stay on top of course maintenance sooner than if we were an 18-holer. With the time and capability, we can set daunting goals and achieve them. Cons – We are restricted with space which impedes on the number of golf carts on the course at any given time as traffic control is a key aspect to the daily smooth running’s on the course. 4. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Bosch Hoek to other parts of the country? At Bosch Hoek, our fairway’s, rough areas and tee boxes are all kikuyu grass. Kikuyu is the most common grass used from the Midlands to JHB. In my opinion, it is the best grass when correctly maintained because although it is a vigorous grower, it most certainly provides the best surface to play off. Kikuyu, as opposed to cool season grass, found in JHB and Cynoden, found in coastal regions, is a lot hardier and in my opinion, easier to maintain. Our greens are A1-A4 bent grass, this provides a much smoother surface and runs at a more consistent speed. Other regions, such as the coast, would have Paspalum greens. This grass is difficult to get up to speeds for tournament standards because of its density. 5. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country? Anything cut with a cylinder mower, as apposed to rotary mowers, is always going to provide a better finish. The machinery found at any given golf course will naturally rely on their budget. I firmly believe that any rough areas on a golf course can still produce a quality cut on any grass type with a rotary mower. But if you are after a cut above the

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - A L L A B O U T G R E E N K E E P I N G maintenance? I do believe it is beneficial for the golf course to close a day per week for maintenance, however from a business perspective, we have a later tee off time on a Monday to allow for such maintenance to be carried out – again, we are able to do so because we are 9-hole course and have the luxury of staying open seven days a week without it impeding on course maintenance.

rest like we are at Bosch Hoek, I suggest cylinder mowers on fairways, greens and tee boxes, along with a decent rotary mower on the rough areas. 6. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance? Climate and location work hand-in-hand with the maintenance requirements of a golf course. Careful planning and strategic applications of specific products need to be timeous. The wetter, more humid regions would need to consider the diseases they are susceptible too, whereas the more arid ‘scapes would need to be conscious of where their water will come from for the season should rainfall not be a reliable option. This all plays a role in how one should conduct and strategise their maintenance both short-term and long-term. 7. To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it? As a 9-hole golf course, playing on the same greens twice does result in slow play too often. It is vital that morning tee times do not clash with the afternoon field in terms of set-up. We have course marshals to maintain pace of play and with the implications of our new GPS Visage systems on the carts, we can send prompts to players such as “Speed up Pace of Play”. 8. In your opinion does course machinery or golfers spread more seeds like POA or diseases? Our cool climate promotes POA in general, our objective is to keep the POA off the bentgrass-greens as they are both cool-season grasses and compete with one another. We have a program in place to execute this. In my opinion, I do not think the golfers impact the spreading of both POA and diseases as much as machinery would.

10. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this? Our staff are aware of the impact they could have on golfers in all aspects. They have been trained to operate consistently without interfering with the golfers. They are mindful of what is happening around them and courteously step aside whilst golfers pass through. On golf days, we have the course ready before hand and while play commences, our staff tend to various other duties around the working farmland. 11. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or a week later? If the divots and pitch marks are repaired immediately, the grass has an opportunity to recover overnight. If it is only repaired a couple days later, the grass has a greater task of recovering. The aim is to keep the course as pristine as possible, with golfers aiding the process instantaneously, the course can recover quicker and continue flourishing. 12. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? We hand rake all our bunkers. They are kept at 100ml sand in the base of the bunker and 60ml of sand on the faces, this is kept consistent by our staff with a user-friendly measuring stick. Bunkers are generally a nightmare to maintain on any golf course, for this reason we implement general checks using the measuring stick twice a week and after heavy rains.

MJ DAFFUE SECURES PGA TOUR CARD FOR 2022/2023 SEASON After consecutive solo-third finishes at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Visit Knoxville Open and AdventHealth Championship, MJ Daffue increased his season points total to 911, eclipsing the 900-point #TOURBound threshold.insurance

When I went over there, I didn’t really have any expectations, top-15’d, and that set everything up.” The most pivotal moment of Daffue’s season came in the fourth event, the Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard. Daffue finished T9 and not only skyrocketed up the reshuffle following the event, but also secured a spot in the next tournament, the LECOM Suncoast Classic, where he recorded a season-high T2 finish.

Daffue joins China’s Carl Yuan and South Korea’s Seonghyeon Kim as the only players to achieve #TOURBound status. Although Daffue has yet to win this season, the 33-year-old Pretoria native has four top-four finishes, including a T2 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic, as well as seven top-25s in 13 starts. “I barely got in the first event this season and I’ve locked (a PGA TOUR card) up 13 events in. Just a year ago, I was Monday qualifying. Now I have my card.” “There was a strange start to the year,” Daffue said earlier this season. “I got into Exuma and wasn’t

Without the top-10 at the Astara Golf Championship in Bogota, Colombia – which Daffue secured with back-to-back birdies on the 71st and 72nd holes – he would not have earned a spot in the LECOM Suncoast Classic, as no players from the reshuffle category gained entry into the field.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

CSU – training on how to change a cup – this can truly make a green look so bad. Take the time to teach your team to knit a cup, ensure the levels are perfect and water the cup after changing. Whoever marks the cups PLEASE DON’T paint a big dot on the green……………. Remove the cap of the paint and keep it at 5mm and give the superintendent the measurement of the pin. IF you do have painted cups – ensure you knit it together BEFORE you change the cup. Bunkers – sand level and edging checks – this should be done by the bunker raking team every 3 months – I like using the guys that rake the bunkers for this task. Consistency is key on bunkers. Tough with irrigation to ensure all or none are irrigated. Most importantly make sure your faces are maintained so that the ball rolls down to the base of the bunker. If your bunkers are too firm then purchase a “Fluffy” from Charl Blaauw at St Francis Links – a cheap & effective tool. Any soft bunkers should be compacted with a wetting agent – 200 ml in a knapsack & watered in every Monday. Greenside bunkers should have a fluff of 2,5 cm & fairway bunkers a fluff of 1,25cm. Staff training – we are only as good as our teams. I love training in small huddles – greens mowers – be with your mowers in the morning. Check the dew for disease and check the mowers for operator errors and clippings – by doing this you truly understand your plant health.

health – ensure you are watering at the right time with the right amount. I love simple hand held moisture meters for every staff member using a hose pipe – takes out the guessing game. Soil tests – we review our clients soils annually and draw up new programmes according to their soils needs. IPM – we then add the integrated pest management to the programme allowing you to produce your ultimate playing surface. By applying the right product at the right time you will save your budget, operate in a sustainable manor & look like the hero! I love seeing the joy on our clients faces when it all comes together. We are blessed to do what we love.

Watering will ultimately determine your plant November | December 2022

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK is the Golfer from the past?

WHO

• The son of a mailman, our mystery golfer was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 12th 1891 and passed away in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 1st 1971. • He was the first U.S.-born golfer to win the U.S. Open, in 1911 and 1912, and at 19, he remains the youngest player to win the event. • He was one of the world’s top players between 1910 and 1914. • He visited the UK in 1914 to compete in the British Open, but because of travel difficulties, he arrived too late to play. On his way home his ship collided with another vessel. This dangerous incident had a serious effect on him. Upon his return home, he blacked out when entering the clubhouse at the Atlantic City Country Club, where he was the club professional. He was only 23 years old. He spent the rest of his life in mental hospitals and rest homes. • Golf historian Robert Sommers wrote that, if not for his illness, he could have been the greatest of them all. Answer on page 110

PGA TOUR, who are working with us to drive revenue and a long-term growth plan. “One of the many benefits we have been able to introduce because of this partnership is the new Earnings Assurance Programme, similar to what they already have on the PGA TOUR. I have always believed that it is an incredible accomplishment for any professional golfer to simply gain their playing rights on the DP World Tour and this new initiative recognizes and rewards that achievement.

The DP World Tour’s global schedule begins on November 24, 2022, with a double header – the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane and the Joburg Open in South Africa. The former is one of two tournaments in Australia on the DP World Tour schedule as part of the Strategic Alliance with the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, while the latter is one of six events co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour, also as part of a strategic alliance.

“Alongside the John Jacobs Bursary for the top five players who graduate to the DP World Tour from the Challenge Tour, it will provide security and a strong platform for emerging players in particular as they come through the global pathways we have created.”

Four new tournaments in Asia are also included on the 2023 schedule, with the Singapore Classic (February 9-12) and Thailand Classic (February 16-19) taking place in consecutive weeks, followed by the Tour’s first trip to Japan for the ISPS HANDA Championship (April 20-23) and a return to Korea for the first time since 2013 (April 27-30).

Included in the DP World Tour’s record prize fund of $144.2 million is an increase in the tournament prize funds for the first four Rolex Series events of 2023. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, Genesis Scottish Open and BMW PGA Championship all move from $8 million in 2022 to

There is also a new three-week summer break in the schedule following the 151st Open Championship and Barracuda Championship (both July 20-23) which has been introduced following player feedback. Further details about the autumn events will be announced in due course.

A unique golfing experience surrounded by nature and wildlife.

A challenge for any level of golfer.
