Dear Ed A few thoughts on the game that we all love. Golf allows you develop a skill and is a form of entertainment that you can do from a young age all the way through your 80’s. Other sports such

as soccer, cricket & rugby, you will more than likely give up as it is tiresome as you age to play these and the physical demands needed to compete leave you exhausted. Imagine people in their 30’s of 40’s trying to get a group of people to play a game of rugby or soccer on the weekend or after work? You can practice different aspects of golf by yourself or with friends or strangers at the local golf course. You can go to the driving range and hit balls or practice chipping by yourself or with friends. You may have a foursome that you play with weekly and socialize with and compete with. The best part is that you can track your results through the handicap system. Using this handicap, you can play numerous games for money or fun with your group, as the handicap evens out everyone so they compete on a level playing field.

Dear George Thank you for writing in. It is clear to see that you are passionate about the game and your enthusiasm is infectious. The many benefits of playing golf are well documented and as you say the handicap system is unique in that it allows for competition between people of vastly different abilities. That said, I know of many people that are playing the other sports that you mentioned well into their later years, which is fantastic. Here’s to all sport and the great joy that it brings to all of us! Regards

Part 2: How to perfect the dreaded ‘Flop Shot’
THE SHO How to perfect the dreaded ‘Flop Shot’ So basically you have found yourself in a bit of a tough situation. You have hit a bad shot and have found yourself short sided and in a tricky situation around the green. The flag is tucked just 4 metres over a bunker and your playing partner is sitting comfortably in the middle of the green with a virtually certain two-putt. You need to up-and-down to halve the hole and win the match.
Performance Tip brought to you by Karl Lehmacher – BSI Coach
Let’s start with the basics of the Set-Up of the Flop Shot (for right-handed golfers): Firstly, you are going to assess how your ball is lying and make sure you take the club in your bag with the least amount of bounce, we do this to ensure we can get under the ball easily, so we can get the ball up as quickly as possible. 1. Weight distribution When addressing the ball, you would want to stand a little wider with 70% of your weight on your lead/ front leg. 2. Aim You would want to be aiming left of target as you will have your club face well open to expose all the loft that the club has to offer you. This would mean that the golf ball should come out right of where you are aiming. 3. Body Positioning With your body position, you will want to get a little lower than usual with the hands lower at set up also. You would also grip down slightly.

To execute the Flop Shot you would strike the ball in the centre of the clubface or slightly off the toe of the club, due to the club face being so open and the club path being out-to-in, with your hands gripping the club softly. 5. Club Speed. To get the ball up in the air as soon as possible, you would need to generate a lot of club head speed, more than your basic chip shot.

The Flop Shot is an intimidating shot to pull off and is not for the faint-hearted. To control the distance the ball travels, it comes down to the players feel and skill level in controlling the speed and strike of the shot. YOUNG SUNSHINE TOUR STARS SET FOR CHALLENGE TOUR OPPORTUNITIES
The Sunshine Tour’s rising stars are set for another season of incredible opportunity with the four European Challenge Tour co-sanctioned tournaments that will tee off the new year on South African fairways. In February 2024, Sunshine Tour professionals will be able to compete in four Challenge Tour events on their home fairways in the SDC Open, Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open, Dimension Data Pro-Am and NMB Championship. The value of these events in South Africa was clearly seen last season when Sunshine Tour professionals made a clean November | December 2023

Benjamin Follett-Smith (Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open), JJ Senekal (SDC Open) and Dylan Mostert (NMB Championship) all used their victories last season to play the Challenge Tour in search of a DP World Tour card. Casey Jarvis also built on his strong start to the year in these four tournaments and went on to claim a maiden victory

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S
GENERAL MANAGER
Gavin Chowles - Club General Manager Port Elizabeth Golf Club 1. You have been in the management industry for a long time, what made you choose this career? It all happened by accident, I was in the job market and I received a mail from the PEGC President informing members that the manager has resigned, I decided that I should try and was successful with my application. 2. Are there any unique differences being a GM at a golf club? I come from the retail industry, hotels and restaurants, mainly in the casino environment, dealing with many different cultures of people. Golfers are similar to gamblers, wanting the best every time when they visit. 3. Who has been your biggest mentor? As I come from the entertainment industry, I would like to recognise my first GM in my casino employment, Graham Vaas, true gentlemen that was driven by service.
18
4. Describe a typical workday for you at Port Elizabeth GC? My day will always start with a walkabout, I make sure I go and greet everyone that is at work, fellow employees, then off to greet all members that are at the club. Once all that is over, I move to my office to start with mails etc. 5. What are your biggest challenges as the GM of Port Elizabeth GC? I think the biggest challenge in life is to keep fellow workers motivated, to ensure the working environment is friendly and enjoyable, whilst still getting the job done. 6. Has the golf industry grown in your opinion over the last 3 years ? I have only been in the industry for 4 years, personally I think golf clubs are better off now than previously.

7. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to Port Elizabeth GC? To give them the best experience when visiting our club, whether for golf, light meal or just a drink. 8. In your opinion, what factors contribute to excellent customer service and keeping your standards at such high levels? The main factor in my opinion, is consistency, always making sure that a customers visit is better than their previous visit, this will make them return numerous times.
10. What are your short & long term goals? Personal goals are reviewed yearly, work goals are reviewed quarterly. 11. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I enjoy racket ball, padel and walking. I often play golf at other clubs when not at work, playing at my club feels like work. 12. Do you still get time to play a round of golf? Yes, sometimes I play with members, I generally try and play twice a month with committee members or members.
9. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes, I am fortunate that my family has always known my working hours to be different to our friends and family, they support my industry and when I am off, generally on a Sunday, we spend family time together.

John Collier Survey INFORMATION GATHERING PARTICIPATION
When the John Collier Survey started researching environmental compliance and good governance some 20 years ago, we assumed that the best source for information would be the clubs’ greenkeepers and superintendents. At that time, the participation rate was 9.6 % of clubs in South Africa, and there was a compliance level of 30%. Some nine years later, after a discussion with Mr. Dale Hayes and others, it was suggested that the Survey should also target club managers, general managers, and directors of golf. During this time, the club participation gradually increased to 40%, while the compliance level fluctuated between 28% and 30%. Recently, participation and compliance levels have tended to plateau out, which has prompted the question, why would this be the case? We looked at Survey results submitted by South Africa’s current TOP CLUB, Blair Atholl Golf and Equestrian Club and host to the 113th South African Open, and Special Mention Club, Elements Private Golf Reserve, as well as the gold, silver and bronze compliance level clubs. What became clear is that we have missed an important stakeholder within golf, in women golfers, and women in golf management. What our research indicates is that many of the gold and silver compliance level golf clubs have strong women involvement in club management, and in particular environmental compliance, and where this is the case, these clubs reflect positive environmental compliance levels. However, it is a moot point that golf is a male dominated sport, in respect of numbers of players, as well as in terms of management and management committees, and where international research still often characterises men as dominant and controlling, while the female identity is described as emotional and caring. International research, into sport environment sustainability, has been studying the issue of
environmentally friendly behaviour by members at sports clubs. The first important finding is that in order to be environmentally compliant, sports clubs depend on their members’ willingness to behave in environmentally friendly ways, which reinforces the issue of peer pressure. In this context, one has to ask, whether members and management are prepared to be held accountable, when environmental compliance issues need attention? The current research indicates there is room for improvement in this area. The second factor, of what would appear to be lowering compliance levels, is the issue of male dominance within golf clubs, and the influence by a male club environment, which, it is believed, has shaped women’s attitudes negatively in terms of their environmental behavior. In an effort to adjust to this male club environment, it is thought possible that women club members have responded, by adjusting their attitudes towards environmental compliance. The concern with this is that while the role of gender has been widely discussed in environmental research, and it is generally agreed that women tend to act more in a more environmentally friendly manner than men, this inevitably raises question, given the lower that the required levels of environmental compliance, whether women’s views on in this key area of club life are being ignored, shouted down, or drowned out? In terms of engagement with our stakeholders, we certainly need to raise our game, however in the interim, the 2023 John Collier Survey period is rapidly drawing to a close, and following previous calls to participate, we once again encourage all clubs in South Africa to participate in the Survey.

On top of that, Lee becomes the second player in history to win an LET tournament without dropping a single shot – Italy’s Diana Luna recorded the other at the 2011 UniCredit Ladies German Open.

RECORDS PILE UP FOR GOLFRSA’S LAMPRECHT Christo Lamprecht set two new benchmarks for South African amateur golf when he rose to No 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings in September and moved to the summit of the PGA Tour University Rankings in early October. The GolfRSA National Squad member became the first South African since the inception of the World Amateur Golf Ranking in January 1997 to reach the number one spot on the world list after a one-shot victory last month in the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields CC. This marked his second individual title on the US collegiate circuit. The lanky Lamprecht – already on the crest of a wave after he became just the third South African to win the Amateur Championship in England in July – led the field with rounds of 65 and 66 and triumphed on nine-under after the final round was cancelled because of poor weather. The Southern Cape native surpassed the previous two best ranked South Africans, Cameron Johnston and Nicol van Wyk, who both reached third in the rankings. On October 11th, Lamprecht moved to the top spot in the PGA Tour University rankings ahead of the 2023-24 academic year following a runner-up finish Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Shady Oaks CC.
It continues a year of history-making moments for Lamprecht, who took the Amateur Championship title when he secured a 3 & 2 victory over Rohan Kleu from Switzerland in the 36-hole final at Hillside GC The Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy graduate followed that by a performance which saw him become the first-ever South African amateur to win the Silver Medal in the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. Lamprecht was also named to the 2024 Fred Haskins Award list this September. This prestigious award recognises the most outstanding male NCAA Division 1 college golfer, and should he be successful, Lamprecht will join four former Georgia Tech golfers who have won the Fred Haskins Award, including David Duval (1993), Stewart Cink (1995), Matt Kuchar (1998) and Bryce Molder (2001). The South African amateur was a Haskins Award finalist last year following an outstanding 2022 | 2023 college season with Georgia Tech. He won the Inverness Intercollegiate, racked up runner-up finishes in the Watersound Invitational, the Linger Longer Invitational and The Goodwin, and was selected to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team for the second straight year.
The Georgia Tech standout is also the first South African to reach No 1 in the rankings for collegiate seniors. The winner of this two-year cycle of the PGA Tour University rankings at the end of May 2024 will earn PGA Tour membership, while the players ranked one to five will earn full exemption for the Korn Ferry Tour and players ranked sixth to 10th earn conditional cards.

She backed up a top five finish in her first start at the Cougar Classic with victory in the Mason Rudolph Championship, finishing the event as the only player in the field to return three sub-70 rounds. Signing for rounds of 69, 67 and 68 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club’s North Course in Franklin, Tennessee, Macnab celebrated a two-shot triumph on 12-under-par 204 and helped Ole Miss to a fifth-place finish overall.
South Africa’s leading women’s amateur Caitlyn Macnab climbed to a career-high 18th in the official World Amateur Golf Ranking at the end of September following her second individual collegiate win and first victory with the Ole Miss Women’s Golf Team. Following a stellar career on the GolfRSA amateur circuit and her victory in the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s 2021 Sunshine Ladies Tour’s Jabra Ladies Classic, the former double SA Amateur champion took up a golf scholarship at Texas Christian University in 2021. She excelled at No 1 for the Frogs and notched her first collegiate title in the Schooner Fall Classic, where she fired rounds of 69, 67 and 64 to win on 10-under-par 20. Her six-under 64 in the final round was a career-best and tied the second-lowest score posted in TCU history. At the start of the 2023 | 2024 season, the 21-year-old Ekurhuleni golfer transferred to the November | December 2023
In recognition of her success in Tennessee, Macnab was named SEC Women’s Golfer of the Week for the first time in her career, although she was named the All-Big 12, First-Tam Academic All-Big 12, and Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team during her time at TCU. She also received All-American Honorable Mentions from the Womens Golf Coaches Association back-to-back in 2022 and 2023. Macnab had the distinct honour of flying the flag for South Africa in the prestigious invitation-only Augusta National Women’s Amateur twice, where she finished 11th and ninth respectively in 2022 and 2023. The Serengeti golfer also represented South Africa in the Espirito Santo Trophy in Abu Dhabi in October alongside fellow GolfRSA National Squad members Kajal Mistry and Megan Streicher. This marked her third appearance in the World Team Amateur Championships. She made her debut in Ireland in 2018, and again in France last year.

A winner on the Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour in the 1990s, DP World Tour success finally arrived at the South African Airways Open in what became a breakthrough year in 2007. Kingston would top the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit that same year.
The South African achieved a hole-in-one at the 2002 Dunhill Championships which didn’t happen in the conventional sense. His ace occurred on the 15th hole after his tee shot hit a tree, took a lucky bounce and rolled in the hole.

MAIDEN WIN FOR RUPERT KAMINSKI AT SA PGA CHAMPIONSHIP Rupert Kaminski stayed calm and centred through a gruelling and testing final day of the SA PGA Championship held at the St Francis Links in September, holding off Matthew Spacey, who stayed in contact with him the whole day, to claim victory by one shot and make his first Sunshine Tour title a big one. With extreme winds expected on the Sunday, Saturday was a race against time to get the tournament finished with both the third and fourth rounds being played, with three-balls going off at the same time in shotgun starts.
morning to close to within one stroke of leader Peter Karmis (71) on nine-under-par. In the afternoon, it became a two-horse race as Kaminski, who teed off on the first hole, and Spacey, who set off on the 18th, separated themselves from the field. Karmis could only manage a 77 in the final round, finishing on four-under and in a tie for third with Ryan van Velzen (72) and Adam Breen (73). Spacey had a troubled start with two bogeys in his first four holes, while Kaminski played sublime golf on the front nine, with three birdies in the first six holes.
Kaminski and Spacey both fired terrific six-under-par 66s in the third round in the

JON RAHM WITHDRAWS FROM TGL’S INAUGURAL SEASON Jon Rahm will not compete in the inaugural season of TGL presented by SoFi, the world No. 3 announced. Rahm had originally committed to the tech-infused golf league last fall, noting TGL’s potential in reaching new audiences and its innovative format. But the Arizona resident ultimately opted against competing in the league’s first season, set to begin in January, noting the level of commitment required to travel to south Florida for up to seven weeknight matches. “I am sad to confirm that I will not be participating in the first TGL season,” Rahm said on X, formerly known as

Twitter. “While I still think it’s a great opportunity, right now it would require a level of commitment that I can’t offer. Best of luck to everyone (involved) and may the best team win!” TGL will feature six four-player teams, with all matches contested at SoFi Center, a custom-built venue in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, that will combine a data-rich virtual course with a state-of-the-art short game complex. Each team will compete in five regular season matches, there will then be semifinals and a championship series.

In 1923 a visitor described the course as “A monument to the origins of golf played on a South African links next to a southern sea” Not much has changed since then. The undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by whose blue waters offer the most panoramic views from many of the fairways. In true links tradition every slope, mound and dip remains untouched, demanding creative shot making and deft reading of angles. Adding to the allure and charm of the course is its resident wild life. Normally shy bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while springbok and impala pronk with delight. The blesbok, fallow deer duiker and giant tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance. Come and see for yourself.

Justin Thomas and Colin Morikawa were also matched with their TGL teams. New York and San Francisco will also have TGL franchises, with a sixth team yet to be announced. Rahm’s replacement on the TGL roster has yet to be announced, as well.
Rahm is an 11-time PGA TOUR winner, including major titles at the 2021 U.S. Open and this year’s Masters. The Spaniard holds 10 DP World Tour titles and has spent 52 weeks at world No. 1. He was also part of the European Team’s decisive victory at this year’s Ryder Cup in Italy, compiling a 2-0-2 record.

his job, Robson famously did not eat or drink an ounce of sustenance during play, opting instead for a sandwich and a glass of mineral water upon the completion of play each day so as to not be distracted by bathroom breaks. As Rick Reilly wrote in a 1999 Sports Illustrated piece, Robson regularly lost “about a stone,” or roughly 14 pounds, during Open play. “This is the greatest job in the world, and I give it the ultimate respect,” Robson told SI then. continued on page 67...

Robson, a longtime resident of Moffat, Scotland, was maniacal about all aspects of the job — which required he work for roughly 10 hours each tournament day without sitting, taking a break, eating or using the bathroom — but no element was more important than the art of the pronunciation. As a first-tee announcer, Ivor was tasked with presenting each of the Open’s 156 competitors, a job that often meant working with competitors in those critical few minutes before their tee times to ensure he had mastered the proper pronunciation. As golfers more than a generation over November | December 2023
can attest, Robson commanded an unwavering presence and impressive precision from the lectern, no matter how difficult the name. Robson retired from his Open post in 2015, the 144th at St. Andrews also serving as his final championship in front of the microphone. “To the professionals, it has been great fun being here with you,” he said from the Old Course then. “We have had lots of banter and it has been wonderful. You are a credit to the professional game.” Asked for his secret to four decades of excellence, Robson answered simply. “I love this job,” he said. “I absolutely love it.”

SURPRISED ROHWER CLINCHES SUNBET CHALLENGE TITLE
Martin Rohwer had the good graces to call it “unexpected” and thanked the weather for helping him, but his wonderful victory in the SunBet Challenge hosted by Sun Sibaya at Umhlali Country Club in October was down to the fabulous golf he played on the final day. Starting the last round eight shots off the lead, Rohwer fired a superb six-under-par 65 on Friday, lifting him into a playoff with Christiaan Burke. Rohwer then parred the par-three 18th hole three times, with Burke making bogey on the third attempt, to seal a most unlikely triumph. “I just made the cut on the number yesterday and I missed the cut last week, so to win is obviously unexpected,” a delighted Rohwer said. “The win never crossed my mind and I was just thinking about getting a low round and moving as high up the leaderboard as possible.”
wind was going to pick up in the afternoon and as soon as I stepped off the 18th, the wind turned south-westerly and started blowing quite hard. So it was a struggle for the later golfers. “I made a really nice putt for eagle on the par-four 14th and then I chipped in for birdie on the 15th and that really threw me into contention. I then just tried to hold on and post something. I thought I might then potentially have a chance. “I had not hit a shot for a couple of hours and then I went to the range before the playoff. The 18th is a relatively short [182m] par-three with quite a strong wind coming off the left and I hit seven-iron all three times. I made a good putt for par on the first playoff hole, par again and then two putts for par the third time as Christiaan made bogey,” Rohwer said. The Kloof Country Club golfer said his putter

struggling to a five-over-par 76, Burke took control with three consecutive birdies from the ninth hole giving him a two-shot lead over Luke Brown and Luke Jerling.
“The best part of my game was on the greens. I made some really nice putts. I drove the ball pretty well too. It’s been a pretty solid season. I’ve finished third twice, had another top-10, and I’ve only missed two cuts. But I’m stoked to win and hopefully I can take this form into the summer swing and the rest of the year,” Rohwer said.
But Burke then dropped shots on the 14th, 16th and 18th holes to sign for a 72 and give Rohwer a chance.
The 30-year-old had three birdies and a bogey on the front nine, and then dropped another shot on the par-four 12th. But that was followed a tremendous birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie run as Rohwer roared into contention.

Whatever happene I was born in Johannesburg in August 1946. At the time my parents were living in Modderfontein, a small town on the east side of Johannesburg. I attended primary school at Saint Paul’s Parochial in Orange Grove. My high school years we spent at Saint Benedict’s College in Bedfordview. My father was an avid golfer and from about the age of 8, I realized that there were always golf clubs and balls lying around the house. This was when I first became exposed to golf, although when I was a toddler, apparently when my dad went off to play golf my mom would insist that he take me along. So, he would employ a caddy to ferry me around the course generally on his back.

My dad’s enthusiasm for the game resulted in me becoming interested in playing at the age of 12. My dad was a Bobby Locke disciple, having also competed in a Transvaal Open at Glendower which Bobby won by a street, shooting scores in the low 60’s. As a result, I was aware of the maestro’s eccentricities, such as wearing a tie on the course and wearing white golf shoes with tassels covering the laces. My dad owned a pair of those tasseled white shoes which I would ‘borrow’ when I went to the course after school. The shoes were obviously too large for me so I would stuff socks into the toes to make them fit. I would also wear my school tie when I played on my own.

Currently my wife and I are living in Palm Beach Gardens in South Florida where our daughter and her two cool sons also live. Our son lives in Australia with his lovely Australian wife and three beautiful children. Their youngest is also named Hugh, although when he was five years of age, he had a problem in accepting that I was also a Hugh Baiocchi! I have a regular Saturday golf group and we play at a Tom Fazio designed course named Riverbend Golf Club. One of our group is Brian Jacobs, brother-in-law of Gavan Levenson and father-in-law of Charl Schwartzel. Brian and I played amateur golf and competed together on the Sunshine Tour, so it is rather special that we now play together in the USA some 50 years later. I don’t hit practice balls very often, particularly in the summer, as the heat and humidity here are brutal. As a result, my game is not too sharp with my handicap index being 4.4. However, I do still enjoy playing and occasionally play with Nick Price, Charl and Louis Oosthuizen. Their golfing ability is amazing, they play a game with which I am not familiar.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments. Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too. Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme. Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

MOOLMAN CHARGES TO VODACOM ORIGINS VICTORY Pieter Moolman’s strategy on the final day of the Vodacom Origins of Golf KwaZulu-Natal event at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in October was to try and create as many opportunities for himself to net birdies, and the Benoni Lake golfer succeeded admirably as he fired a sensational 64 to get into a playoff with Ethan Smith, which Moolman won. The 32-year-old Moolman began the final round six shots behind on four-over-par, following a 68 in the weather-delayed second round. He was so far behind Hennie O’Kennedy on two-under that he began his last round on the 10th hole, and a wonderful start saw him birdie four of the five holes from the 11th.
although Moolman’s back nine (from the first) featured a couple of bogeys, at the first and eighth holes, he still collected four birdies to come home in two-under, his 64 being the low round of the tournament. Smith, meanwhile, also made a brilliant start with three birdies from the first hole, quickly overhauling O’Kennedy, who had been one stroke ahead of him. The 25-year-old from Paarl bogeyed the 18th hole however, forcing him into the playoff. Moolman added to his birdie count in the sudden-death decider as he made a three on the 305m par-four first hole, while Smith could only make par.
He went out in a stunning 31 strokes, and

STEVEN MOTITSOE
Golf Course Superintendent Maccauvlei Golf Club
1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further? I was a caddy and I used to play golf as well. When playing at Maccauvlei, I felt that I wanted to get involved in the course maintenance side. I started as a worker on the course 20 years ago. 2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? The best is when you have got sufficient staff and machinery. The worst is when the staff don’t come to work and the machines break down. Preventative maintenance on the machines is vital to ensure the course stays in excellent condition.
3. You are at Maccauvlei GC, right on the banks of the Vaal river, what are your biggest challenges especially when the river is in flood? Our biggest challenge being right next to the Vaal River is when we have flooding and we lose some holes due to this. We then have to redo the greens and clean up all the debris that has washed over the course. 4. Are there any precautionary measures that can be taken to prevent certain areas from flooding? Unfortunately there are no precautionary measures we can take to prevent flooding as we are right next to the river, Mother Nature can’t be beaten. 5. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Maccauvlei to other parts of the country? The difference is our fairways are Coco grass and the rough is normal grass. Our greens are Poa but we are inter seeding Bent grass. 6. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country?

The same machines can be used with different settings on cutting height etc. 7. What are the big differences for tournament setup as opposed to normal day to day setup? For tournaments, the fairways must be shorter and the first cut must be precise. During tournaments we let the rough grow to ensure tougher playing conditions when the player misses the fairways. The greens must be fast and true to ensure excellent putting surfaces. The course setup will be from the back tees during tournaments.
10. Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this? Sometimes, but I speak to my staff on what they must do. They must wait for the golfer to play and then he can carry on with his job. 11. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? With regards to the bunkers, it is sometimes difficult especially with rain and sprinklers. I do check them myself, by
8. In your opinion does course machinery or golfers spread more seeds like POA or diseases? It is difficult to say but foreign grasses are mostly brought in with golfers. 9. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance? No, I don’t think it should be mandatory. At Maccauvlei, we do not close the course and we work around the bookings for the day.

The experienced golfer, having turned professional in 2011, was coming off a brilliant 64 two weeks before in his final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the Old Course in St Andrews, and Moolman thrived on the similarities between the Scottish masterpiece and the challenging Wild Coast Sun Country Club. “My game is very close to where I want it to
be and I enjoyed St Andrews, playing really well there. It was the same thing as today in terms of approach, just trying to give myself plenty of opportunities. “With all the rain and the course flooding a bit, the Wild Coast was actually a bit similar to playing in Scotland and the wind was still up today, but calmer than yesterday,” Moolman said. Third place, just one stroke behind Moolman and Smith, ended up being shared property between England’s David Wicks (68), Trevor Fisher Jnr (69), who won the Wild Waves Challenge at this course in 2012, and MJ Viljoen (67). O’Kennedy shot a three-over-par 73 on Sunday to finish in the tie for 10th on one-over-par.

Integrated Pest Management – the trick is timing! I love starting with the soil – working on a nutrition programme which best suites your soils needs. Best to do annual soil tests (I like using Labserve – reception@labserve.co.za) who have given me solid soil results since 1997 – ask for the Talking Turf test to ensure all the necessary macro & micro nutrients will be tested. Nematodes – testing these annually is advised. Dr. Mieke Daneel at the ARC in Nelspruit is one of the few nematologists with good turf experience – mieke@arc.agric.za

WHO
• Our mystery golfer was born on April 4th 1939 in Kirkland, Washington, U.S. • She is the only woman to have won the U.S. Girls’ Junior, U.S. Women’s Amateur, and U.S. Women’s Open titles, and was the first person ever to win three different USGA championship events. • She captained the 1994 U.S. Solheim Cup team. • She was nicknamed “The Great Gundy” • While still an amateur in 1969, she won an LPGA Tour event, the Burdine’s Invitational. She was the last amateur to win on the LPGA Tour until 15-year-old New Zealander Lydia Ko won the CN Canadian Women’s Open in 2012. • Her greatest professional victories were her two U.S. Women’s Opens, in 1971 and 1976. • Her late husband and her were known for driving from tournament to tournament and staying in an Airstream trailer. FILIPPI BAGS BLUE LABEL CHALLENGE TITLE Making birdies is usually the name of the game in the modified scoring system used by the Blue Label Challenge but making 15 pars was at the centre of Luca Filippi’s success in October when he claimed the title by two points at the Gary Player Country Club. Filippi, who went into the final round leading by six points, had to recover from a tough start in which he bogeyed the fourth and sixth holes to lose two points. But after his mishap at the par-four sixth, Filippi did not drop another shot, his eight pars in a row being interrupted by a crucial birdie, worth two points, on November | December 2023
the par-four 15th hole. The 24-year-old then parred his way home, despite high drama on the last hole when he hit his approach into the water but managed to get up-and-down for par on the par-five. That left Filippi on 34 points, two ahead of Ryan van Velzen and Keenan Davidse. Van Velzen pushed Filippi hard with a seven-point haul, but he made crucial bogeys on the 13th and 17th holes, while Davidse scored four points on the back nine but paid dearly for a pair of bogeys

on the second and third holes, and then four in a row from the sixth. “It was a tough day with guys seeming to struggle to control their ball-flight in the hot weather, it went a bit further today,” Filippi said. “It was weird that I wasn’t that nervous because in this format it’s anyone’s game and I knew I was always in play. “I just wanted to make pars but give myself chances to make birdies, if the putt drops then it’s a bonus. Draining that birdie putt on 15, after hitting a lob-wedge from 81 metres in the middle of the fairway to two metres was big for momentum coming down the stretch, putting me all-square for the day.

“The 18th was nervewracking though. Keenan and I both hit good tee-shots and I had 185 metres to the flag, so I hit a five-iron, but I was short-right and into the water. Keenan missed a four-metre birdie putt to win, but I made my four-metre putt for par. “There’s no better feeling than winning a golf tournament, it was unbelievable, that’s the only word to describe it. I’m very happy, it was a great day,” Filippi said. The victory is the Milnerton golfer’s first in a regular individual event on the Sunshine Tour, Filippi having won the Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Teams Challenge at Pretoria Country Club in August.

“It’s been a long journey and it’s wonderful to get it done. The teams event didn’t quite feel like a proper win, there has been some talk about ‘is it really a win?’, but I just had to suppress those thoughts. Now the monkey is completely off my back,” said Filippi, who finished second in last year’s Blue Label Challenge at Sun City after his eagle-putt on the last lipped out. November | December 2023

MAJOR CHAMPION OOSTHUIZEN TO PLAY IN AFRASIA BANK MAURITIUS OPEN Major winner Louis Oosthuizen has confirmed that he will tee it up in this year’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open and compete against a strong Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour field on La Réserve Golf Links, which he co-designed. Oosthuizen, the winner of the 2010 Open, adds to a quality field that also includes defending champion Antoine Rozner and five-time DP World Tour champion and Heritage Golf Club ambassador Marcel Siem as part of the seventh edition of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open from 14-17 December.
The South African said he is looking forward to playing La Réserve Golf Links, which he co-designed with Peter Matkovich as the first and only contemporary links in the Indian Ocean and the latest and most keenly anticipated offering in Heritage Resorts’ golf portfolio. “I’m very excited to compete in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open once again. Mauritius is a wonderful destination to visit and enjoy with my whole family. I also cannot wait to play La Réserve Golf continued on page 111...

Links under championship conditions and to see how the course responds to a quality international field of professionals,” said Oosthuizen. “As one of my first golf course designs in partnership with Peter Matkovich, I am really proud of what we have achieved. When I first saw it, the site was immediately appealing and I had no doubt that we could produce something special on it. “It’s exciting that it will open its fairways with the hosting of the 2023 AfrAsia Bank November | December 2023
Mauritius Open and be able to showcase to the world what is an outstanding addition to the amazing golf offering in Mauritius. I’m delighted to be a part of it.” This will be Oosthuizen’s second appearance in the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open following his seventh-place finish in 2017. La Réserve Golf Links adds significantly to the already world-class golf offering in the south of Mauritius and on the renowned Bel Ombre estate, with Heritage Golf Club having hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open on three previous occasions on its critically acclaimed Le Château Golf Course.
