LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). If your letter is published you will win a fantastic PGA voucher worth R500 to be redeemed with any registered PGA Pro, for equipment or golf lessons

WINNING LETTER To the Editor I recently read an article where it suggested that the days of a dad kicking a rugby ball outside with the kids were on the way out. The article implied that interactive computer games such as Wii were taking over and that kids from now on would start to abandon traditional sports and become bound to there television sets and computers. What a lot of hogwash! I have young children and it seems to me that outdoor activities are alive and well with children yearning for simple pleasures such as kicking a ball or hitting a ball around the garden. Golf in particular is an ideal activity as it provides uninterrupted family time outdoors and is also a great way to spend quality time with your family and friends! It is great exercise in a beautiful setting. Studies show that walking the golf course reduces levels of bad cholesterol, burns calories,

prevents heart disease, and helps oxygenate the body and improve posture. Golf helps children learn how to focus and teaches great life lessons respect, integrity, sportsmanship, camaraderie and problem solving. It is also a great business tool for networking for when they get older. Golf is a game for a lifetime and can be enjoyed by young and old. How many other sports can a parent, child and grandparent participate in together? We really need to be accountable for our actions and I feel that sport (real sport) will always be a part and parcel of our children’s lives. Regards Trevor Bailey

Dear Trevor I could not agree with you more. Although computer games and the like are very much a part of life today there can very few things better than playing rugby, soccer, golf or whatever in the yard with the kids. When it comes to golf I think that more children should be encouraged to visit driving ranges and that a round of golf needs to become more of a family activity. In addition children should be encouraged to attend golf tournaments as they do for rugby, soccer, cricket etc. Congratulations on winning the R500 PGA voucher and good golfing to you and your family! Regards

Congratulations to Trevor - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! November/December 2011

Changes to Rules of Golf unify the world of golfer Finally, golf ’s official rulebook will look the same in golfing countries around the world. On Oct. 24, the U.S. Golf Association and the R&A, announced identical formatting worldwide for the newest Rules of Golf, the 2012-2015 edition. In anticipation of golf ’s return to the Olympic Games in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro, the layout and format of the Rules of Golf will be the same in every country. For example, the content of page 62 in the United States will match the content on page 62 in Britain or Asia or South America. All will contain identical rules, illustrations and photographs. The only differences will be in the local languages. This is unparalleled for golf. In the past, the rules were the same around the world, but individual countries or golf associations often created their own layouts and formats. The rulebook is reissued every four years by the 10

USGA and R&A, the two governing and rules-making bodies that oversee golf around the globe. This time, they vowed to produce a uniform rulebook. “It may sound easy, but it wasn’t,” said Thomas Pagel, the USGA’s director of the Rules of Golf. “It was complicated and difficult, and it took a lot of time to get it done properly.” In the past, the USGA occasionally reprinted the Rules of Golf every two years. There is a 2010-2011 edition of the rulebook, although it is the same as the previous printing. The only change is the title. Pagel affirmed there will be no more two-year editions. All new rulebooks will read 2012-2015 to support public recognition of the four-year rules cycle. However, the comprehensive Decisions on the Rules of Golf will continue to be published every two years (the 2012-2013 edition will be available in November).

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE NEWS CLIP

Donald wins Disney event and money-list title With his breakout season, Britain's Luke Donald has quietly laid claim to the position of golf's top player, assuming the role in a much different manner than former world number one Tiger Woods.

In compiling two wins on the PGA Tour this season, Donald finished outside of the top 25 on just three occasions in 19 tournaments. He also added two victories in Europe this year, winning the BMW Championship in May, before claiming the Scottish Open in July.

While Woods once occupied the throne with breathtaking power and dominance, Donald climbed the ranks with precision and consistency signaling a new era in the game. Donald's win at the Disney Classic on Sunday, which allowed him to capture the PGA Tour money-list title, was crafted with his irons and putter as he leaned on the accuracy that has him on the verge of becoming the first player to win the orders of merit on both sides of the Atlantic.

An uneven performance in the majors was the only blemish on Donald's 2011 record. Despite top-10 finishes at the Masters and PGA Championship, he missed the cut at the British Open and was never in contention at the U.S. Open. Winning a major would be the final piece in solidifying Donald's career, and after his season of ascension he may have proven that he is up for the challenge.

"It would mean a big deal to win both money lists," Donald, a four-times winner on the PGA Tour, told reporters. "Getting to number one and holding onto it and extending my lead and winning four times now, you know, obviously that's a pretty good year."

November/December 2011

"I think I answered a lot of critics' questions, coming (to Disney) knowing I had to win and coming up with the goods when I needed to," said Donald, who needed to finish no worse than in a two-way tie for second to take the money-list honors. "I feel like I've answered all the questions thrown at me."

T

he George Golf course is a beautifully manicured, par 72, 18-hole course, set in the heart of the Garden Route. This traditional parkland golf course celebrates its 105th birthday this year. As one of the busiest clubs in the area, averaging close to 50 000 rounds annually, the club attracts a steady stream of visitor rounds in addition to a membership base of close to 1300. The course has seen a few changes to its layout over the past few decades with the most visual being that of the addition of 24 new bunkers added to the original 9 in 1993, as well as the building of the large dam between the fairways of the 1st and 18th holes in 1999. The club offers a two tee start twice a day, with morning starting times in the region of 7am to 9am and 12pm to 2pm for the afternoon during the summer months. Visitors are welcome daily with the exception of Wednesday and Saturday afternoons which are reserved for members and their guests. Booking for golf is essential. Please note that no group bookings are allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The course rating for men is either 70 (club – 5862m) or 72 (championship – 6162m), while that for the ladies is 72 (5204m). Caddies and motorised golf carts are available for hire; golf carts must be booked well in advance due to a small fleet of carts available at the club. SPECIAL FEATURE – GEORGE

The Links at Fancourt recognised for environmental excellence Located at the foot of the spectacular Outeniqua Mountains, The Links was officially opened just over 10 years ago by course designer Gary Player. Inspired by Scotland’s famous links courses, here Player and his design team have created an authentic links test on what was once the site of an airfield. Unique to South Africa, The Links presents undulating windswept terrain and dune-style landscape, with the tees and fairways a combination of four cool season grasses.

F

ollowing hot on the heels of its first ‘green’ certification, which was awarded by GreenStaySA in 2010, the Links golf cours has added another important conservation accolade to its status, this time as Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, awarded by the international Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. The Links is one of two courses in South Africa, and the 931st in the world to receive this honour. These include the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in Johannesburg, as well as golf courses as far afield as the USA, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, New Zealand and Southeast Asia. The campaign to attain Fancourt’s prestigious ‘sanctuary status’, was spearheaded by Graham Corbett (Resort Course Manager), and implemented by Spencer Cooper (The Links Golf Course Superintendent). Says Cooper: ‘After three years of environmental dedication, the Links team feels honoured to have received this coveted certification, and trust it will go a long way in demonstrating that, if constructed and managed properly, a golf course can in fact have a positive impact on the environment. We will continue to do all we can to improve and preserve our eco-system for generations to come.’ November/December 2011

SPECIAL FEATURE – GEORGE

Driven by Tana Scott (Fancourt Environmental Consultant), Fancourt has adopted a ‘green’ approach in general, which is applied to all aspects of the business operation. It has established an Environmental Management System to improve its performance, with focus areas including management of invasive alien vegetation species; waste, water and electricity management, as well as providing a safe habitat for wildlife along streams and lakes, and educating golfers about the importance of natural areas. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses is endorsed by the United States Golf Association, providing information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect their natural resources. In order to qualify for this prestigious accolade, The Links course had to demonstrate their dedication to environmental responsibility within a number of categories, including Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Water Conservation, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Quality Management, as well as Outreach and Education. Renowned for hosting international golf legends such as Gary Player, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, The Links golf course was proud to recently identify two special ‘locals’, when two different protected tortoise species were found here for the first time. 20

November/December 2011

SPECIAL FEATURE – GEORGE

Spencer Cooper, Golf Course Superintendent of The Links, spotted a Bowsprit tortoise (Chersina angulate) while crossing the cart path between hole five and nine of The Links. This medium-sized tortoise is known for its fast walking and can be found close to the coast. It is unique among South African tortoises in having a single unpaired gular (extension of the ventral plastron) that is used to ram and overturn rival conspecifics. This behaviour has earned it the reputation of a 'fighting tortoise'. Also found on The Links golf course, the Leopard tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) is the most widely distributed tortoise in Southern Africa. Sometimes known as the Mountain tortoise, they are found throughout the savannahs of Africa, from Sudan to the Southern Cape. A Leopard tortoise can grow rather large, and to sustain their shell-building at a good clip, they need to consume a fair amount of calcium – which, being entirely herbivorous, they find solely in the grasses and shrubs they meander through.

Johan Marais, author of the book ‘What’s that Reptile’ explains that contrary to what people believe, golf courses can be beneficial to wildlife. ‘As golf courses become older and more established, one automatically sees more animals taking up permanent residence there. Those with ’green’ spaces, such as The Links, are sure to provide a welcome sanctuary for many small animals and bird species in the years to come. Neither the Angulate or Leopard tortoise are endangered in terms of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but both are threatened and listed by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). This means they may not be captured or kept without the necessary permits, nor may wild tortoises be exported from South Africa.’ November/December 2011

SPECIAL FEATURE – GEORGE

‘The Fancourt Links course has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,’ says Joellen Lampman, Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program’s Director. Voted Africa’s Leading Golf Resort at the 2009 World Travel Awards, Fancourt is dependent on its natural beauty and location along the scenic Garden Route for its status as a major tourist attraction, and is therefore 100% committed to preserving its own, and the surrounding natural habitat and eco-system.

George 200 years old this year!

T

he town of George was established as a result of the growing demand for timber and the wood used in building, transport and furniture. In 1776 the Dutch East India Company established an outpost for the provision of timber; its location is thought to be near the western end of York Street. The Timber Post had its own manager, some 12 woodcutters, a blacksmith, wagon maker and 200 oxen plus families. After 1795 and the British occupation of the Cape, a caretaker of the forests in the area was appointed. After the second British occupation in 1806, it was decided that the Swellendam magistracy was too large and needed to be sub-divided. George was chosen because of the availability of good water. In 1811 George was declared a separate district and Adriaan Geysbertus van Kervel was appointed the first magistrate and the town was proclaimed by the Earl of Caledon, governor of the Cape Colony on St George's Day, 23 April 1811, and named after the reigning British monarch, King George III.

Fancourt links to host the European Tour's Volvo Golf Champions event next year

S

outh Africa will host the European Tour's Volvo Golf Champions event next year after it was moved out of Bahrain because of security concerns. The European Tour announced in August the $2.8-million tournament would not return to Bahrain in 2012 because of recent instability in the Gulf state. Instead, the Fancourt links course which staged the 2003 Presidents Cup - will now host from Jan. 19-22 and will have an "elite field of champions," the European Tour said. The decision gives South Africa three successive European Tour events in January with the Africa Open, the Joburg Open and the Golf Champions falling on consecutive weekends. Paul Casey won this year's inaugural Volvo Golf Champions at Bahrain's Royal Golf Club. The 2012 field will be announced this month, with winners on the 2011 Tour and players who have won 10 or more European Tour titles eligible to compete for the $486,000 winner's check. "We are delighted to announce the Volvo Golf Champions will take place at Fancourt Golf Resort in 2012 as the first genuine season-opening tournament of champions, a format we are very pleased to incorporate on our international schedule," European Tour chief executive George O'Grady said. O'Grady added the event could return to Bahrain as early as 2013. Bahrain also lost a Formula One Grand Prix this year in the wake of anti-government protests that have left at least 35 dead. "We know that Bahrain is working hard to address the issues it has faced in recent months, as well as to reach out to the international community," O'Grady said. "We, together with the European Tour players, look forward to returning and building on that first, very successful, event in the future." The shift adds to South Africa's growing golf portfolio after it was announced in April the country would host a big-money World Golf Championships event at the end of 2012. The Tournament of Hope - set to be the richest in the world with a prize fund of $10 million and likely to attract top players - will take place in late November or early December.

Many of the world's top 50 players are also expected for the Volvo Golf Champions event. Country Snapshot: India Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice

Great challenges…even greater potential

Overview of supply The British Empire left a golfi ng legacy to India, and a number of high quality courses, steeped in tradition. The introduction of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) in 1955 took over responsibilities for golf organisation and development from the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, who had been handling India’s golf interests since the club’s inception in 1829. According to the IGU, India currently has 196 registered golf courses, and up to 35 additional courses not affi liated with the IGU. Around 50% of the registered courses are situated on military bases, which are only accessible to military personnel and select individuals. This leaves approximately 100 courses to cater for a civilian golf demand. The makeup of the golf course supply is split between 18-hole (39% share) and 9-hole (60% share) facilities with three 27-hole clubs. There are fi ve existing signature courses in the country, including ones designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman. The majority of courses in India are located in proximity to main urban centres, with many in or close to New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and India’s largest city, Mumbai. Surprisingly there are still no resort courses in the country even though inbound tourism in India has grown 8.1% in the last year. 30

Overview of demand It is estimated that India has approximately 150,000 active golfers, of which 100,000 are golf club members. Of these, 55,000 subscribe to the IGU for a oneoff fee of around USD 200 benefi ting them to concessional rates at affi liated clubs. The demographic of these players is heavily skewed towards male participants (85-90%) while female and junior golfers comprise the remaining share. In recent years private clubs have become more accessible to green fee players, however many courses still advertise, or like to be seen as members only. According to our sources, there are only two clubs, both in the capital New Delhi which are defi ned as public courses. Many clubs restrict green fee players with the majority of courses closing to visitors over the weekend to cater for the members’ demand.

Rounds and revenues Research collected for KPMG’s Golf Benchmark Survey indicates that the average number of rounds played per annum at 18-hole facilities ranges from 25,000 to 30,000 (excluding military courses). At some of the busier clubs where fl oodlights are used, hours can be extended to accommodate a higher demand. Average annual revenues for both nine and 18-hole courses range USD 180,000- 200,000 (excluding military courses) with some larger, more popular clubs reaching anywhere up to USD 800,000 per year. Membership initiation fees typically range USD 1,800-2,000 however, at some of the more high profi le clubs with very restricted and exclusive membership policies, fees of up to USD 20,000 may be charged. Annual subscriptions for individual membership can range USD 100-300 depending on the club. With the average number of members per club estimated at 1,000, although some courses exceed 2,000 members, it becomes clear that a large portion of annual revenues emanates from subscriptions. Average green fees range USD 10-50 and do not contribute to annual revenue in the same way as subscriptions, due to most rounds being allocated to members. Some high-end courses charge up to USD 100 but these are low in numbers.

Challenges Our discussions with local industry stakeholders highlighted an underlying theme of lack of professional expertise and knowledge within the Indian golf industry. The requirement for more dedicated and experienced resources to advise and understand the challenges that are faced not only with new projects but also when looking to overcome inherent problems of long established operations. Another major challenge India faces today in developing golf courses is the ability to acquire land in both a cost and time effi cient manner. Land parcels are generally small; and developers need to purchase multiple plots at a cost that can quickly infl ate. The initial steps taken when planning a project with a golf component can be time consuming, expensive and misunderstood, delaying developments and have, in some instances, resulted in the omission of golf from project master plans. In an attempt to drive participation rates, the sport needs to be supported by an increase in accessible courses that focus on affordability to a wider audience. However the viability of such projects can be questioned especially when the only cost effective land available for this would be away from urban areas with limited transport infrastructure. 32

Development and future outlook In the last 10 years, 38 golf courses have been affi liated to the IGU, of which 30 were new developments and the remaining eight as redevelopments of existing military courses. This has been a very slow growth rate for the last decade, however based on our research; there are currently as many as 30 courses under construction. Due to the lack of transparency it is diffi cult to estimate future growth rates of demand. One approach, as shown on the left is based on expected participation rates applied to a small section of the population who can feasibly afford to choose to play golf. This suggests that India may need to build up to 100 new courses o satisfy the demand over the next decade. An increase in participation can be achieved by: • Building more affordable and accessible facilities • Increasing activity in junior and academy golf • Effectively promoting professional golf to a wider audience. The IGU has taken positive steps to ensure the development of golf in years to come. A joint venture with the R&A and IGU saw the creation of the National Golf Academy, intent on improving the standards of teachers, players, trainers and course managers. The reach of the professional game will be just as important in driving the sport forward in the future. Players like Jeev Milkha Singh and SSP Chowrasia (both European Tour champions) inspire all ages to take up the sport. Professional competitions such as the Indian Masters (which was inaugurated in 2008 and is now India’s fl agship golf tournament with a purse of just over USD 2.5 million in 2011) bring exposure to both global and national Indian markets. Additionally, the Indian Open on the Asian Tour has been won by an Indian national three out of the last fi ve times. Future course development seems inevitable and may need to come hand-in-hand with real estate opportunity. Provided that the challenges that exist in India can be overcome, there is great potential in this growing golf market. November/December 2011

SPECIAL FEATURE – GOLF CLUB REVIEW

Golf Club Review

Kempton Park Golf Club During early October I was invited by an acquaintance to play a round at Kempton Park Golf Club. As this is one of the friendliest Golf Clubs around I did not hesitate to accept the invite. Once again this was a fantastic experience so we decided to give our readers some more information on the golf club itself.

K

empton Park Golf Club was designed in 1965 by Grimsdell & Kerr, and is characterised as a typical Parklands golf course with kikuyu fairway grass and a mixture of poa and bent grass on the greens. It is known to be an easy-playing and friendly course, with a vast array of animal and bird life, which is typified by their logo. Both the course and the club house were re-designed in 1981, with the addition of a new and re-designed bar area. Recently, both the ladies and the men’s locker rooms have been newly renovated.

The Club currently has approximately 700 members, with an active ladies and junior section. In 2010 the junior team won every single junior trophy in Ekurhuleni. The golfing coach Mike Sebanz is a qualified PGA Professional who has coached the game at various levels from beginner through to professional and offers lessons on their range. 34

GOLFING DESTINATION – GAUTENG NEWS CLIP

Player of the Ballots delayed until after HSBC The PGA TOUR Player of the Year race may not be over yet. The TOUR decided Monday to wait until after the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions is over to send out Player of the Year ballots since the tournament would count as an official win if a PGA TOUR member wins it. Ballots still must be returned by Dec. 9. "When we send out the ballot, we have a brief summary of the player’s year on the PGA TOUR. It would be a glaring omission if someone won the tournament and that wasn’t on there." A year ago, the HSBC Champions was played prior to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic, which concluded the 2011 Fall Series on Sunday. With his win at Disney, Luke Donald joined six other players with two victories this

year – capturing the PGA TOUR money title in the process. (Money earned at the HSBC Championship is unofficial.) Three of the two-time winners – PGA champ Keegan Bradley, Nick Watney and Mark Wilson – are currently expected to play Nov. 3-6 in Shanghai along with Fed Ex Cup champion Bill Haas. Also playing in Shanghai is Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, who has not missed a cut this year. Schwartzel is not likely to be on the ballot now, but adding a World Golf Championships title to his major could make a difference. The other three two-time winners – Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson and Steve Stricker – are not entered in the tournament at Sheshan International Golf Club at the current time.

The new 588 Forged wedge from Cleveland Golf

C

leveland Golf, the winners of more than 335 PGA Tour championships, including 26 majors, is extremely pleased to introduce the new 588 Forged wedge. The 588 Forged wedge, which maintains the popular, tour-proven shape of Cleveland Golf's original 588 wedge, offers a series of technological breakthroughs to provide added performance benefits for players of all abilities. Forged from 1025 carbon steel, the 588 Forged wedge offers golfers an incredibly soft yet solid feel and less unwanted vibration. The advanced Precision Forging process ensures the highest level of part-to-part manufacturing consistency for supreme confidence and trust over every shot.

“The confidence-inspiring shape of the original 588 wedge remains the standard by which all competitors’ wedges have been judged for more than 23 years, and attempting to build upon that benchmark is not a task we take lightly at Cleveland Golf,” said Todd Harman, President of Cleveland Golf/Srixon - U.S.A. “Our 588 wedge is the most popular wedge in the history of the game, and with sales in excess of 3 million units worldwide, it’s arguably the single most successful golf club ever brought to market. Our new 588 Forged wedge not only lives up to the 588 legacy, it takes Cleveland wedges to a whole new level.” 52

SPECIAL FEATURE – PRODUCT REVIEW

Laser Milled™ Face Technology Using the precision accuracy of a laser, four perfectly calibrated texture lines are milled between each groove of a 588 wedge exactly to the conforming roughness limit. This breakthrough surface roughness application optimizes ball-to- face friction, maximizing spin under the rules of golf. "This treatment helps to create a lot of friction between the ball and the face on every shot, from the rough and from the fairway," says Scott Carlyle, Cleveland Golf's business unit leader for wedges.

Tour Zip Grooves™ The 588 wedge features Tour Zip Grooves™, which are crafted with precise milling technology that preserves groove edges and maintains perfect groove consistency. These grooves have the maximum allowable dimensions in accordance with USGA requirements.

Tour Concept Wedge Shaft co-developed and engineered by True Temper and Cleveland Golf Exclusive to the 588 wedge is the Tour Concept Wedge shaft, co-developed and engineered by Cleveland Golf and industry leader True Temper. With a unique stiffness profile that features a less active tip, this shaft promotes a more penetrating ball flight, increased spin and optimal distance control. The Tour Concept shaft also features variable wall thickness construction which limits vibration and improves feel.

Multiple Bounce and Finish Options The 588 Forged wedge will be available in lofts between 46 - 64 degrees with multiple bounce options. These wedges will be available in two finishes, Mirror and Satin Chrome and will be released domestically in mid-December 2011.

NEWS CLIP

Golfers 'given break' by R&A rule changes ST. ANDREWS, Scotland – Golfers will no longer be penalized if their ball moves after it has been addressed in one of a number of rule changes announced Monday by the sport's governing body. Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson were among those to have been hit with one-shot penalties this year for what is widely regarded as one of the harshest rules in golf. The revision was made by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which issues the sport's rules in conjunction with the USGA, the governing golf organization in the United States and Mexico. Beginning Jan. 1 and until 2015, players will not be punished if the ball moves after the address "when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move." "Every time the wind blows, I am worried that my ball is going to move and I am worried about grounding my putter, distracting me from trying to hole my putt," said Padraig Harrington, threetime major winner who is an R&A ambassador. McIlroy, the U.S. Open champion, was penalized in his final round at the British Open at Royal St. George's. The consequences weren't dire for McIlroy – he had little chance of winning and finished 25th – but the same cannot be said of Simpson during the final round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in May. The American was leading by a shot and closing in on what would have been his first title when his

November/December 2011

ball moved on the 15th green. After receiving a one-stroke penalty, he eventually lost in a playoff to compatriot Bubba Watson. Simpson lost the PGA TOUR money title to Luke Donald on Sunday by a margin of $335,861 – the difference between first and second place at the Zurich Classic was $460,800. Simpson at the time labeled the sanction "such a bad rule." Other changes announced by the R&A include allowing players to smooth sand or soil before playing from a hazard "provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached." Golfers will also no longer be automatically disqualified from a tournament if they start late, but within five minutes of their assigned tee time. Instead, they will lose the first hole in match play or two shots at the first hole in stroke play. "I am delighted with the changes, in particular the ball moving after address," Harrington said. "It is definitely giving us players a little bit of a break." In addition, the R&A has amended the definition of addressing the ball to mean "simply ... grounding his club immediately in front of or behind the ball, regardless of whether or not he has taken his stance." Before, the address position required a player to be stood over the ball with the club grounded.

World golfers championships held in KwaZulu Natal Having just completed a spring treatment that included hollow-tining of both fairways and rough, and the continuation of a redesign and redevelopment program for bunkers, the course at Prince’s Grant Coastal Golf Estate on the Kwazulu Natal Dolphin Coast is looking in magnificent condition to co-host the World Golfers Championships in November.

T

he greenkeeping team, headed by Danie Kok, author of the popular series of articles “Hou die lemme skerp” which featured in SA Golf Trader over the last year, have worked tirelessly to prepare and condition the course for this event.

For more than a decade WGC has inspired amateur golfers from around the world to take on the challenge of competing within their own skill levels and receiving the same status as the professionals do.

WGC gives amateurs the chance to experience the proud feeling of representing their country in a world championship final, individually as well as in a team. The tournament begins as a national championship in countries around the world, where winners from five handicap flights comes together and represent their nation as a team and individually within their flights. The event is hosted at four of the top golf courses in KZN, namely Prince’s Grant, Durban Country Club, Zimbali and Umhlali Country Club, over a period of a week, with each competitor getting a chance to play all 4 courses. Mike McNamara, marketing Manager of Prince’s Grant, and South African Golf Tourism Association council member for Kwazulu Natal, was quoted as saying “The fact that these four courses in KZN have been selected to host this prestigious international event highlights the world class quality of golf available in this area. To increase the ease of accessibility of KZN to both regional and international golfers, SAGTA has been working closely with our member golf clubs and tour operators, and we are very happy that packaged golf circuits which include the top KZN courses will be launched at World Travel Market in London and the International Golf Travel Market in Turkey in November.” Prince’s Grant has a successful history of association with amateur golf. Since Prince's Grant Golf & Country Estate was founded in 1994, it has been the vision and mission of the club to promote amateur golf in South Africa. In line with this philosophy, Prince’sGrant has extended honorary life membership of the golf club to all winners of the South African Amateur Championship. In addition they have inaugurated a national amateur invitational tournament that is held on an annual basis, to which they invite the top 60 amateurs in South Africa. Over the past few years, many of the best amateurs in South Africa have played in the event and some have gone on to become successful professional golfers both locally and internationally, most notably 2002 winner Charl Schwartzel. Prince's Grant plans, organizes and runs the tournament and ensures that both the number and quality of the field are maintained through strict selection criteria as well as ensuring that development players are given the opportunity to participate at this top level of competition. The amateurs invited to the tournament do not pay any entry fee for the tournament, and their stay and meals is at no cost to them. The full cost of the tournament is borne by the Club with the assistance of sponsors, who in 2011 consisted of local companies Cedar Paints and Xpanda Security. 58

Challenge yourself at Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point When Mark Twain said “The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” he could well have been referring to the golf course at Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort - because, although the company that developed the resort is under liquidation, the golf course and club house continue to run successfully under the management of the Pinnacle Point Homeowners Association.

“The Homeowners Association has always done everything it can to ensure that lovers of Peter Matkovich’s sublime creation on the cliff-tops west of Mossel Bay have access to their favourite golf course,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “In their latest move, they’ve appointed Bertu Nel to manage the club - and we believe his legendary skills and sense of hospitality will make a good product even better.” To put things into perspective, Homeowners Association general manager Carl van der Linde said that more than 85% of the properties on the estate have been sold and are now in private hands - and that the golf course and club house are in excellent condition. “The condition of the course speaks of quality and success,” he said. “Pinnacle Point was crowned one of the ten best new golf courses in the world in 2007, and it’s won a number of other awards since then - and we are proud to keep living up to those standards.” Although at one time open only to members of the Homeowners Association, the Pinnacle Point Golf Course now welcomes all golfers. “This is a true championship course that’s often difficult and challenging,” said Mr. Nel. “But it

62

caters for all levels of player, with four sets of tees to choose from: Red for ladies, juniors and novices, Gold for low handicap ladies, seniors and high handicap men, Green for low and medium handicap men, and Blue for pros and low handicap players looking for an exceptional challenge.” He said that the Fairways Restaurant is operating successfully, and that it offers excellent food at affordable prices. “And it’s not only for golfers - anyone’s welcome to come and dine here, and to enjoy the exquisite views of the ocean and the fynbos.” As far as improvements go, Mr. Nel said that the parking area is presently being upgraded, a new practice green is under construction, and that plans have been put forward for the extension of the pro shop, and the opening of a gym and a spa in the club house. “The price of games at Pinnacle Point is very competitive, the golf is outstanding, the course is immaculate, and the surroundings are incredibly beautiful, with the flowers in the fynbos looking better and more colourful than ever before. “We look forward to welcoming you next time you’re in Mossel Bay.” For more information, visit www.pinnaclepointestate.co.za

The Golf Course property and controlling shares in the Club have been owned by Pezula Investments Pty Ltd since the inception of the Club in 2002.

P

ezula’s Chairman, Keith Stewart announced his intention to consolidate his business interests in South Africa and consequently offered the Sparrebosch Home Owners Association (SHOA) the opportunity to acquire the golf course, clubhouse and controlling shares in the Club. The Sparrebosch Home Owners unanimously agreed to this offer as Pezula Club represents the essence of their lifestyle and secures their property investment. On 15 December 2010 the members voted overwhelming in favour of the transaction and as a result took ownership of the Club and its assets as from 31 December 2010.

A further consequence is that the Sparrebosch Clifftop Estate will change its name to Pezula Golf Estate to reinforce the integral link between the two entities. With ownership and financial control now vested with the Club’s members, the Pezula Golf Club should now go from strength to strength. The course is now in excellent condition, future financial security has been established and the current season rounds have already improved on last year. The Golf Club, unlike many of its peers in the region has the potential to draw membership from a large immediate community of stakeholders. There are some 700 homeowners, suite owners and private residence members who have invested in Sparrebosch Clifftop Estate, the Pezula Private

66

Estate, the Pezula Resort Hotel and the Private Residence Club all which adjoin the Golf Course. In addition, the Golf Course is close to Knysna which has a large permanent resident population and attracts many tourists. The Club’s Committee has resolved that the Club should increase its membership and number of rounds played, and should make effective use of its catering and pro shop facilities. After having performed a due diligence of the Club’s financial position, the SHOA is confident that the Club will continue to operate as a viable concern. It has prepared financial forecasts which show that with reasonable revenue projections and cost reductions, the Club should be fully self-sufficient in its next financial year. A new Membership Structure has been agreed upon whereby Members can join for a nominal fee and purchase pre-paid rounds as and when required. The benefits of being a Member at Pezula Club: • 10% Discount on all Food & Beverage purchases in the Clubhouse, • Exciting Social member Events, • Member Golf Days and Club Competitions, • Lessons & advice from onsite PGA Golf Professionals, and • Exclusive use of Practice Facilities. It was left to 14-year old Carrie Park and Biance Barnard to turn the tables – and they did just that – winning their final two games over Simoné Burger and Chevonne Botha to claim the match 5-4 and successfully defend their title for the fifth successive year.

KZN triumph at SA Mid-Amateur IPT PORT ELIZABETH: It was always going to be a tough battle between the top three contenders but KwaZuluNatal blew their opposition out of the water to lift the South African Mid-Amateur Interprovincial title at Humewood Golf Club. The coastal side earned their second Mid-Amateur IPT title in three years when they wrapped up a comprehensive 8-4 victory over defending champions Ekurheleni to take their winning tally to eight points. “This is an incredible moment for the whole squad, because we prepared exceptionally hard for this week,” beamed team manager, Neil Champion. “We faltered along the way and it all game down to how we would perform as a team in this last game against Ekurheleni. I am so proud of how the players pulled together to ensure our victory.” The two teams were neck-in-neck after a 2-all result in the foursomes, but KZN six of their singles to seal their campaign. 68

Limpopo claims historic promotion at SA IPT wins 50th SA Inter Provincial BLOEMFONTEIN: While the battle for supremacy between Central Gauteng, Gauteng North and KwaZulu-Natal will continue in Friday’s final round, the B-Section celebrations started early as Limpopo Province sealed a historic promotion in the fourth round of the South African Inter Provincial at Bloemfontein Golf Club today. A draw against Eastern Province and earlier victories this week over Free State & Northern Cape and North West gave the Far North side an edge coming into the fourth round. Stepping up to the challenge, the young squad mowed down Border 8-4 and thumped Mpumalanga 6½ - 5½ for their third and fourth wins, cementing their position at the top of the BSection log in spectacular style. “It’s a great feeling to realise that the outcome of our match against North West tomorrow will be irrelevant to our standing,” said an emotional Johan Krugel. “This is a historic day for Limpopo. It’s the first time we challenged in the B-Section, the first time we’ve won and for the first time ever, we will be playing with the big dogs.”

Thailand Golf Tourism Heads towards $US2 Billion Led by growth from Australia and Europe, the value of foreign golf tourism to Thailand may reach 60 billion baht or $US2 billion in 2012 for the first time. Based on a Tourism Authority of Thailand forecast for a record 19 million inbound visitors to the kingdom next year, up to 600,000 foreign golf tourists - or three percent of the total - will make a beeline for its five major golf destinations: Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Pattaya and Chiang Mai. Meanwhile, the Thai Government has high hopes for continued strong tourism growth over the next four years. Earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism and Sports Minister, Chumpol Silpa-archa, announced a target of at least 30 million foreign inbound tourists by 2015, who he said were expected to generate national revenues of 1.4 trillion baht or $US466 billion at current exchange rates. If achieved, the target would almost double inbound arrivals in just five years. And if inbound golf market's share and expenditure remain at current levels, golf tourism will contribute 150 billion baht ($US4.5 billion) to the Thai economy four years from now. 70

“Close the Gap to stop coming over the top! Coming over the top, also known as across the line, is a common fault among golfers. This problem causes the club to enter the impact zone from too steep an angle and makes it near impossible to hit a draw. The most common results of this problem are a pull to the left or a slice that starts left of the target and usually finishes to the right of the intended target. In the pictures below you can see that from address and top of the backswing my hands have disconnected from the side of my body during the downswing creating a large gap. This causes club to strike the ball from the outside as well as too steep of an angle creating inconsistent ball striking.

Address

Top of backswing

Hands outside coming down, notice the gap between my hands and the right pocket.

A good way to avoid this fault is to feel that your hands are as close to your right pocket (left pocket for lefties) on your downswing. Another feeling is to feel that your right elbow is tucked in to your side on the way down. Notice that the line of the club is now inside the target line allowing me to swing through to the target giving me space to release the hands and create the draw spin that we are looking for! Hands feel like they are brushing the right pocket here.

Good luck with this tip and if you are still hitting pulls and fades, please consult with your local PGA Professional.

S

hierdie spelers is goed.

Julle sal weet wie hy is oor 2 jaar. As daar enige besigheids mense daar buite is wat moontlik jong sterre wil borg, gee my ’n lui. Ek belowe dat jy gaan “value” vir jou geld kry want niemand weet nog van hulle nie! ! Kom ons staan saam en help ons jong manne !

PUTTING:

CORRECT ADDRESS POSITION Alrighty then guys and girls, the last tip for the year! Luckily you’ll have loads of time to practice during your holidays! In the last issue we discussed an aiming routine for your putting. I hope you have spent some time practicing this very important basic. I also mentioned that the whole aim of the putting stroke is to keep the PUTTERFACE SQUARE throughout the stroke and most importantly during IMPACT.

Emile Steinmann, Elite Coach Tuks Golf Academy

In order to do this consistently you need to have a consistent, comfortable and correct address position! Let me show you how...

As with the long game, the grip is extremely important. You can grip the putter whichever way is MOST COMFORTABLE for you but make sure that the INSIDE OF YOUR FOREARMS are FACING EACH OTHER, that your hands are CLOSE TO EACH OTHER and that you are gripping very GENTLY.

Get yourself into a good, athletic POSTURE that allows you to get your EYES OVER THE BALL. Once in this position, let your ARMS HANG FREELY FROM YOUR SHOULDERS. ALIGN your EYES, SHOULDERS, FOREARMS, HIPS, KNEES and FEET PARALLEL to the BALL-TO-TARGET LINE. Once you have these BASICS in place, you can make a SIMPLE, SMOOTH STROKE. Remember, your wrists and hands may not break or hinge. Make your stroke by ROCKING YOUR SHOULDERS!

I am sure these tips will help you to sink way more putts! Have a great holiday, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

He is an American, born on the 11th of November 1951 in New Albany, Indiana. He is one of three golfers to have won the Masters in his first appearance in the event. Known as a jokester he was most famous for waving a white towel in mock surrender from the fairway of the 72nd hole of the 1984 U.S. Open after Greg Norman holed a long putt on the 72nd green to tie for the tournament lead. At the end of the 18-hole playoff the next day between Norman and our mystery golfer (which our mystery golfer won by 8 strokes), Norman waved a white towel himself, returning the joke. He earned the 1985 Bob Jones award following his win of the 1984 U.S. Open. In 2002 he won the senior PGA Championship. He is an avid fisherman & hunter (preferring to hunt with a bow) and says that his ultimate goal is to bow hunt in South Africa. There is an Ultra Premium Vodka that he has placed his name to. A 1/2 dozen quick reflections on 2011 What did we think we knew that we really didn't? What had everyone talking? What boggled our minds? What did we ignore until it smacked us in the face? 1. Never say never. How many times did you hear someone harrumph about a long putter? Swear they'd never use one? We said pish-posh to the broomsticks, too. And then ... they were everywhere. Keegan Bradley earned an asterisk to go with his PGA Championship – first major won with a long putter. Won the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Phil Mickelson put one in the bag. Webb Simpson won a pair of events with them. Adam Scott made wielding one cool. They used to be for the old guys with yips. Now they're trending into 2012 and beyond. 2. Consistency. Never thought that top-10s would trump a major, but this year that just might happen. Think Luke Donald, who has won twice (including the World Golf Championships-Accenture World Match Play), finished second twice, collected 14 top 10s in 19 PGA TOUR events and more than 500 world ranking points. Webb Simpson, another contender, won twice, had three seconds and 12 top 10s in 26 events. 3. The kids. They're better known as twenty-somethings and they're pretty fearless. And seriously resilient. Think Rory McIlroy for starters. He follows a major meltdown at the Masters with a walkaway at the U.S. Open. Keegan Bradley and Jason Dufner go head-to-head at the PGA Championship. Rickie Fowler hangs in there and finally picks up his first professional win halfway around the world. Simpson is in the Player of the Year mix at 26, Bradley at 25. Bottom line? They one-upped the veterans more often than not. Don't tell them what they can't do. Continued on p88 November/December 2011

4. Getting out of your own way. Sounds like a little self-help babble, right? Wrong. Harrison Frazar, Sean O'Hair and Darren Clarke all took that route this year and ... Frazar was ready to change careers, O'Hair was just struggling period and Clarke was wondering if his major window had come and gone. Then they let go and had incredible life-changing weeks. So it's not babble. It's a roadmap to finding one of those weeks when everything works and everything falls into the hole. Trust. Accept. Stop trying to direct and let it happen. Frazar and O'Hair are back, Clarke's the Champion Golfer of the Year and has a year to sip out of the Claret Jug. Life lessons. 5. Break-ups. They happen all the time on TOUR. Player-caddie, player-coach, player-manager. But this year, the 24/7 news cycle, social media and ... well, we're not sure what else, pushed them to tabloid headline status and trending topics on Twitter. Tiger-Steve Williams. Adam Scott-Tony Navarro. Mark Steinberg-IMG. Fred Couples-Joe LaCava. LaCava-Dustin Johnson. Rory McIlroy-Holly Sweeney. McIlroy-Chubby Chandler. Ernie Els-Chandler. Padraig Harrington-Bob Torrance. O'Hair-Sean Foley. Oh my. Sometimes people just need a change. Yes, they get our attention, but never thought golf splits would rival Hollywood splits did you? 6. Sudden death. We always hear what the possible playoff holes are every Sunday afternoon, but this year we saw them what felt like more often than not. Yes, there were a 18 of them. A record. Two more than the record of 16 set in 1988 and 1991 and one that produced the shot of the year – Bill Haas' shot out of the water on the second playoff hole at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.

PGA Tour launches Latin American development series The PGA Tour is to launch a development series in Latin America in an attempt to build on the momentum of golf ’s introduction to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The “PGA Tour Latinoamerica” will start next year and feature 11 tournaments that will take place in seven countries. It will run from Sept. through to Dec. in Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru. The Nationwide Tour already holds an event in Colombia and will stage a tournament in Chile next year. Golf will be added to the program for the 2016 Olympics after the sport, along with rugby sevens, received the backing of the International Olympic Committee in 2009. The Latin American series will have 144man fields consisting primarily of players from the region. Henrique Lavie, the commissioner of the Tour de las Americas, will be installed as executive director of the new tour, which could expand to 14 events in 2013. According to The Associated Press, Lavie said: “This potential pathway to the higher levels of professional golf is something that is an improvement for the players in the region.”

LAUGH LOUD SPECIALOUT FEATURE

The A to Z of Golf: B Backhander: A putt struck with the back of the putter blade. Sometimes golfers will do this in a casual fashion when the ball is very close to the hole. When they miss a backhander and it happens often - amateurs often smile and record their score as though they had made the putt. This is known as cheating.

This shot is one reason why the word fore is heard on the golf course nearly as often as more notorious four-letter words.

Bogey: The number of strokes needed to finish a hole by a golfer of average skill and above-average honesty.

Barky: When one of your shots strikes a tree and you still make par for the hole, you have made a barky. Golfers often include a barky as one of their junk bets during a match.

Bogey train: A series of consecutive bogies. For professional golfers, the bogey train is a oneway ride to a job at a driving range.
