LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA golf Trader

WINNING LETTER To the editor Although the game of golf may look simple to someone watching it on TV, it isn’t. Golf is the following (mental, physical, strategy and patience) all working together so that you can hit a tiny white ball into a tiny hole. So even if many individuals are taking up golf, some beginners quit too soon out of frustration. There are many obstacles to overcome, such as how to choose the best clubs, how to hold the club, the best way to swing without throwing out your back, and how to increase your skills with specific instructional lessons. As with any sport, good coaching is paramount and it is for this reason that I have to say that the on- course- golf-pro’s need to become more involved with their “customers”. I feel that they are often too busy organizing golf days or too involved with administrative operations and that their time would be better utilized assisting players.

4

It used to be like this many years ago but things seem to have changed, anyway that’s my opinion. Regards Richard Tomlinson

Dear Richard Thank you for your letter. Golf is indeed a challenging game as you have mentioned and the golf industry itself has many obstacles to overcome if it wishes to grow successfully. I have to agree with you that there could be more interaction between the players and the on-coursepro’s. A few pointers here and there go a long way to improving ones game and also it enhances the overall experience at a golf club. The pro should be out on the course, interacting with his “clients”, ensuring that they have a fantastic day out and that they will return time and again. Regards

PGA NEWS PGA’S APPROVE VOLUNTEER COACHES

PGAs approve volunteer coaches for Olympic golf growth

W

ith golf’s inclusion in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics being seen as a means to grow the game globally, the PGA’s of the world have agreed on a new framework to allow more volunteer coaches to work in golf. The framework was discussed and agreed upon at the PGA World Alliance meeting held on the weekend before the Open Championship in St Andrews. This meeting takes place every 18 months and brings together the nine largest PGAs in the golf world, including the PGA of South Africa, which was represented by Chief Executive Ivano Ficalbi and Chairman Paul Marks. “The focus of this meeting was to finalise the coaching framework for golf that is required by the International Golf Federation (IGF) and International Olympic Committee,” said Ficalbi. “Golf’s inclusion in the Olympic Games will be a catalyst for the growth of the game around the world. This new coaching framework takes into account the role of the volunteer coach in the development of the game.”

6

“The rules of golf are clear on earning a living from the game, and a volunteer coach is an accepted part of this where the basic development of the game is required.” An example of a volunteer coach in South Africa would be the current members of the PGA’s Grow Golf Association, whereby schoolteachers and South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) coaches are able to introduce young children to the game. The PGA of South Africa also has a mandate from the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and PGA World Alliance to help facilitate the growth of the game and to upskill PGA professionals throughout Africa, and this framework will form a vital part of this. “It will assist the PGA of South Africa to grow the game into African countries whereby volunteer coaches can be trained to introduce the game to young children within their communities and PGA professionals can then identify the talent and take them to the next level,” said Ficalbi. The Coaching Framework has been approved by the PGA World Alliance and adopted by the IGF in preparation for the Olympic Games in 2016 and 2020.

NE WS CLIP Els named 2015 Payne Stewart Award recipient

T

he PGA TOUR and Southern Company today recognized Ernie Els – a four-time major champion – as the recipient of the 2015 Payne Stewart Award. Els – who is known for his off-the-course philanthropy, in particular his devotion to improving the lives of those with autism spectrum disorder as well as development of junior golf talent in his native South Africa – will be honored on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in conjunction with the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in Atlanta. The ceremony will be televised live on Golf Channel as part of a GolfCentral special from 7-8 p.m. ET. The Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to a professional golfer who best exemplifies Stewart’s steadfast values of character, charity and sportsmanship. Stewart, an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR and World Golf Hall of Fame member, died tragically the week of the TOUR Championship in 1999. Southern Company, the “Official Energy Company of the PGA TOUR and the Champions Tour,” was the TOUR Championship sponsor the year of Stewart’s passing. A year later, the PGA TOUR created the Payne Stewart Award in his honor, and Southern Company has supported the annual presentation since its inception.

Name: Elizabeth Payne 2. What is your handicap? Golf is my handicap. Kidding, normally say max 32, so there are no expectations but 22 is realsitic. 3. HWhen did you start playing Golf? Only later in my life when I had to give up my hockey career. 4. Who got you into playing Golf? My friends and later my husband. 5. Who is your favourite women’s and mens golfer? It has to be Lee-Ann Pace and Gary Player. (‘The more I practise the luckier I get’ is one of my life mottos). 6. Where are you currently a member at? Nowhere at the moment, I play where and when I can but I never miss a game at The Somerset East golf club near my parents farm in the Eastern Cape, I consider it my home course. 7. Which is your favourite golf course in South Africa? Skukuza Golf Course, when I played there we had to wait for the elephants to move off the 3rd fairway before we could tee off. And on the 9th you have to hit over a water hole filled with hippos. I’m still saving for a round at Pezula. It’s on my bucket list. 8. What has been your most embarrassing moment on the golf course? Freshies and lots of them. Often you want to tonk that ball with all you’ve got and the slight lift of the head... equals FRESHIE! 9. What do you hope to achieve in the coming years? A consistant game with a decent drive. 10. Any superstitions? Nah, life to short. But when I make a birdie I always use the same ball at the next hole and suddenly it becomes a ‘lucky’ ball.

In this issue we focus on good rhythm in your putting stroke & how understanding the dynamic of a pendulum can greatly improve your stroke... by Paul Cuningham - PGA Professional - Elite Coach at The Golf School of Excellence - Huddle Park

Y

ou can tell a lot about your set-up with the help of hanging a pendulum from you hands, down the back of your putter. Builders have done this for centuries to straighten out their lines ;-) If your putter doesn’t sit symmetrically front on to your pendulum you have less chance of launching your ball on a good line. Some guys set their hands to far behind the ball creating too much loft in their launch angles, base or leading edge strikes can occur & left launches off the putter face. Other guys that forward press to much, getting their hands ahead of the ball, can get negative launch squeezing the ball into the turf (not ideal into the grain), tend to get more top edge strikes & right side launch lines. Zach Johnson has a bit of rearward tilt with his putter & less loft on it, while Phil Mickelson has forward tilt with more loft on his putters, plural! Try it sometime, make a home made pendulum, I don’t care if it’s your tea cup hanging at the bottom of the string, set or find your optimum shaft lean & club head loft, then you can start launching your ball on line more consistently :-) One last point on setting up with a pendulum is that it shows you where the bottom-out-point of your stroke is & this can help you find your optimum ball position. You want it just ahead of the bottom of your stroke for optimum launch & roll. It can even show you if you are leaning to much weight on your left leg or right side.

12

www.sagolftrader.co.za

When making a stroke front on with the pendulum, you will get some initial lag as you move the putter back but as you start swinging it back & through a couple of times you will start getting in sync with the motion of the ball. With the ball hanging from your hands this extends the base of your pendulum visually. Your arms being the pendulum of your stroke, whatever is attached to them, hands, swinging ball or putter should move in sync with them. If your hands are to loose or to mobile the swinging ball & putter will move about with less control & consistency. The job of your hands are to remain soft in pressure but firm enough to stabilize face & shaft angles through impact.

September / October 2015

tuition & instruction If you feel like a ‘spaz’ & can’t seem to get in sync, it’s probably because you are trying to hard to make the swinging ball move with your putter ;-) Rather get control of the swinging ball first, even without your putter at first, then combine the putter & let the putter follow the motion of the swinging ball. Start off small & then work your way up to bigger pendulums. Play around with it a little, once you start getting in sync with your pendulums you can upgrade them & reduce them at will with immense feel & control.

With good posture, weight dynamically balanced on the balls of your feet, take note of the pendulum hanging directly below your hands & shoulders pivot point. Everything moves in relation to this. Hands that are to much inside this line will create to much in-to-out path through impact & if your hands are ahead of this point it will create an arc that will cross the ball to the left. If you want to keep the pendulum on line, your shoulder line must remain square to the path you wish to keep it on, no hint of shoulder rotation left or right or else you will start creating figures of 8 back & through ;-) Probably one of the most important keys to great putting is squareness of shoulders to path with your hands hanging directly under them! Whatever is attached to them should move in unison with your shoulder/ arm movement. Emphasis on the word should ;-) as for some of us there seems to be a little problem with the hands at times, hey!!?

Too many golfers focus on their hands in their stroke, numbing themselves out from their feel & confidence. I often hear guys telling me that they take back the putter with this hand, then take it through with the other, some putt great with their left hands only, back handing the ball down the green, others just feel it better with their right hand & some just can’t put them together. A sad affliction caused at some point by over thinking the natural & now trying to outthink the unnatural Yip! :-( A stationary pendulum with just the use of the hands is not ideal. Notice how the arc of the stroke leaves the ground faster leading to missed strikes. An arms/shoulder stroke shallows out your arc ;-) A much better pendulum... Always remember there is hope, there is a way. Surrender your fears, the doubt, the tension that you clutched onto in your old ways. Embrace your putter in a new way. Hold it with the gentleness of love & the firmness of fortitude. Find a way to get an uncoordinated dominant hand out of your stroke or even off the putter & then find your pendulum again. Remember, it’s okay to use your hands but only to keep the putter connected to them :-) The work in the stroke is done through your shoulders & arms, the bigger muscle groups that can control slower, finer muscle movement, especially under pressure situations ;-) Now that’s where we want it the most, let’s go find it & own the show...

Durbanville Primary wins Ernie’s Championship

D

ebutants Durbanville Primary School celebrated a roaring eight stroke victory in the fifth Ernie Els Primary Schools Championship after denying Curro Aurora repeat success at the Fish River Sun CC last month. Ayden Senger (74), Louis Loubser (75) and Max Orgovanvyi (83) enjoyed a great opening partnership of 232 that put Durbanville Primary School in pole position in their first appearance at the premier annual junior team event. Loubser returned a 76, Senger carded a 77 and Orgovanvyi posted another 83 for a final round 236 to secure victory on 468. “We are so happy and so proud of the team,” said coach and team manager Lana Orgovanyi. “We sat with Curro Aurora at dinner during the opening ceremony and the trophy was on the table. I pointed to the trophy and told the players that this is what we came to play for and it was up to them if we would take the trophy home. “They all came to the party in a big way. Even when they struggled at times, they played with great determination and commitment and I am incredibly pleased for them.

Minnie marches to Africa Junior Open victory

S

entanio Minnie held off a spirited challenge from Gauteng North’s Dylan Mostert to claim his first national title with an eight stroke victory in the Africa Junior Open last month. The 17-year-old Ekurhuleni junior shared the first round lead with Allan Lones after both players opened with 73s at the Fish River Sun CC, but he pulled two strokes clear of Lones with a second round 74.

“I thought it would be a two-horse race between Allan and me, but Dylan Mostert ended up providing the fireworks,” said Minnie, who kept control and closed with a 73 to win on four-over-par 220.

Svensson denies De Lange at Boys Amateur Keegan De Lange

Marcus Svensson

S

weden’s Marcus Svensson defeated South Africa’s Keegan De Lange 4&3 in the 36-hole final at Royal Birkdale to win the 89th Boys Amateur Championship last month.

The 17-year-old from Halmstad GC became the second Swedish player in succession to win the title, following on from Oskar Bergqvist’s victory at Prestwick in 2014. De Lange from Pretoria CC, the first South African to reach the final of this prestigious international championship, opened with a double-bogey six, but Svensson took full advantage of the benign conditions at the historic links. The South African dropped a further shot on the third hole to give Svensson the early lead, which the Swede never relinquish through to the conclusion of the match. After a slow start, the left-handed De Lange made birdies at six and eight, but Svensson responded with gains at eight and 10 to turn 4-up. The Swede took a five hole lead as De Lange struggled down the back nine. But after Svensson bogeyed 14, De Lange holed a 30-foot eagle putt on 15 cut the deficit to three holes.

September / October 2015

Svensson bounced back with a birdie 17, though, to take a four hole lead into the last 18 holes. It was the Swede’s turn to struggle and he dropped four shots against a lone birdie on the front nine. De Lange closed the gap to two holes by the turn, but bogeyed the 28th hole to trail by three holes. He matched Svensson’s birdie at the 29th hole, but a duffed approach shot into a pot bunker on the 31st hole for a double bogey six. This left Svensson four up with six to play, but De Lange kept the match alive by getting up-and-down from the edge of a greenside bunker on the 32nd to halve the hole. Svensson matched De Lange’s par five at the 33rd hole, though, to secure a 4&3 win. A gentleman in defeat, the Gavan Levenson Academy player praised his opponent and paid tribute to the event and the six-time Open Championship venue. “It was a bit of a struggle out there and I wasn’t playing my best golf, but I had an unbelievable week so I can’t be angry about that,” De Lange said. “Marcus played really well and put the pressure on early in the game and kept it going. All in all, well played to Marcus, he deserved the win.

4 rounds of 67 = Southern Cape Open Champion. Australian Jason Day and Western Province amateur Carlo O’Reilly may have almost nothing in common, but for both players, Sunday 16 August 2015 will live on as the day that changed their lives. contention with greater consistency and after I took the first round lead, my only goal was to finish in the top five. “It’s a huge achievement for me to put together four solid rounds; the best reward for all the hard work that’s gone into the last six months with my coach, Paul McKenzie.

Impressively, O’Reilly shot four successive rounds of 67 at Knysna GC to match Day’s Major record-breaking 20 under par total at Whistling Straits. Like Day, O’Reilly’s victory was in no small part due to his resolve to get the job done. “I’ve been close so many times and you start to wonder if it’s ever going to happen for you,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of great rounds, but there was always the one round that killed my chances. “My only aim this season has been to put myself in

International experience inspires Telfer in George “It is going to sound really weird when I say this, but my mind-set was still in Europe,” Telfer said. “The standard of the players who competed in the Annika Invitation Europe and the Girl’s British Open Amateur Championship was incredible high. You really had to step up your game to have any chance and I was still competing against them in my head when I teed off in George.” Telfer finished joint 37th in Sweden and tied for fourth in the 36-Hole Stroke Play Qualifier to reach the Match Play stage of Girl’s British Open Amateur Championship in Scotland. She was eliminated in the second round, while Samu reached the semi-final at West Kilbride GC. “Ivanna and I gained an incredible amount of experience from the trip,” said Telfer. “You get used to playing a certain game here at home, but even as early as the first round of the Annika Invitational Europe, we had to dig deeper. You are completely out of comfort zone, facing fierce competition on courses that are nothing like what we are used to.

F

resh from competing in back-to-back international championships in Sweden and Scotland, Kaleigh Telfer was untouchable as she carved out a 10 stroke victory in the Southern Cape Championship at George GC last month. The 17-year-old Bryanston golfer opened with a six under 66 to pull two strokes clear of top ranked Ivanna Samu and fellow Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member Zethu Myeki. She stretched her lead to seven strokes with a second round 67, which included a career-first albatross at the par-five second, and closed with a 70 to seal her second provincial triumph this season on a winning total of 13-under-par 203. Telfer’s victory vaulted her to second in the Womens Golf South Africa Senior Rankings and she credited the recent international trip for her success.

September / October 2015

“We had to think out of box to succeed and find reserves we didn’t even know we had. We are both greatly indebted to Womens Golf South Africa for giving us the opportunity to compete in these world-class events. I think the pressure to perform brought out the best in us.” Reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play champion Samu, who also played bridesmaid to Telfer at the Free State and Northern Cape Open in April, protected her number one spot with another runner-up finish. She carded rounds of 68, 72 and 73 to finish on three under 213. Myeki from Border climbed to fifth in the rankings with a third place finish in the recent Gauteng Stroke Play Championship. The West Bank golfer further closed the gap on fourth ranked Carrie Park with third overall on three over after rounds of 68, 68 and 73.

After trading bogeys at one and three for gains at two and four, the Wingate Park player reeled in five straight pars for a second successive 70. Van Heerden opened with a 66 and carried a one stroke lead over James du Preez into the final round. The Walker Park golfer returned a 74, while Du Preez from Pretoria Country Club carded a 73 to share second place.

Loubser relishing return-trip to Italy after KZN triumph

B

oland junior Herman Loubser is savouring his return trip to the Reply Italian International Under-16 Championship next week after winning the 2015 KwaZulu-Natal Amateur Championship last month. The 16-year-old Theewaterskloof golfer underlined his growing status as one of the South Africa’s rising stars when he eliminated Albert Venter 4 & 2 in the 36-hole final at Selborne CC. The victory was his first on the South African Amateur Association’s Open Amateur provincial circuit and Loubser said the timing could not have been better.

His opponent’s casualties included Gavin Sole from KwaZulu-Natal (2 & 1), David McIntyre from Central Gauteng (2 & 1), fellow Gauteng North golfer Reinhardt Blaauw (3 & 2) and Southern Cape Open champion Carlo O’Reilly (2 & 1). “Albert claimed a huge scalp when he beat Gavin in the first round and he defeated some other to players on the way to the final, so I knew I was in for a tough match,” Loubser said. “I nailed two 15-footers for birdies at 31 and 32 to lead 3-up and the match wrapped up at the 34th hole when Albert drove his tee shot out of bounds. It was a great battle of wills and I really enjoyed playing him in the final.”

Strauss wins LPGA Q-School First Stage

S

outh Africa’s Bertine Strauss moved one step closer to the LPGA Tour when she claimed the First Stage Qualifying School with a wire-to-wire victory in California last month.

The Koster golfer recorded rounds of 67, 67, 70 and 70 at the Dinah Shore and Arnold Palmer courses at Mission Hills GC in Rancho Mirage to triumph on 14-under-par 274. “I feel relieved,” Strauss told the LPGA Tour media office after edging out leading American amateur, Megan Khang, by one stroke for the medallist honour. “This a good confidence builder for me for the rest of the year. This was the lowest four-day total I’ve ever shot, so it gives me the confidence to know what I am capable of.” The former University of Texas ace will lead Khang and 58 other qualifiers in the Second Stage at the Plantation CC in Venice, Florida from 19-25 October.

Day wins PGA for first Major

I

t was a long time coming, but Jason Day, always one of the best but never the best in a major, seized his moment and never let go until the very end at the 97th PGA Championship. The tears spilled out of him on the 18th green and as he spoke with reporters afterward, the emotions of a player who never gave up on himself even when things looked very, very bad. After entering the final round with a two-shot lead over surging crowd favorite Jordan Spieth, Day birdied four of the first seven holes to maintain a comfortable cushion, then cruised home at Whistling Straits for his first major title. He signed for a 5-under 67 to beat playing partner Spieth (68) by three strokes, and Branden Grace (69) by five. “I was trying to hold back the tears over the first putt,” Day said with the Wanamaker trophy sitting next to him in the winner’s unusually candid and emotional press conference. “And when I saw the putt go up to half a foot, I just couldn’t stop crying. It’s just a lot of hard work that I’ve been putting into this game to dedicate myself to have a shot at glory, have a shot at greatness.”

28

Day, shattered the tournament record for strokes under par, and easily bettered the winning scores at the previous PGAs at the Straits in 2010 (Martin Kaymer, 11 under) and 2004 (Vijay Singh, 8 under). His total also set a record for the most under par in a major championship, beating by one Tiger Woods’s total at the 2000 British Open at St. Andrews. “I didn’t see close to 20 under par winning this tournament,” said Rory McIlroy, who in his return from an ankle injury shot a final-round 69 to finish 9 under par and in 17th place, 11 strokes behind the winner. Jason just made it look easy. He uncorked a massive drive on the par-5 11th hole that wound up 382 yards down the fairway, and when Spieth walked up and saw it he turned around and said, “Holy s---!” Day simply smiled and playfully flexed his biceps. “I knew I was going to be playing uphill from there,” Spieth said. Day, 27, said before Sunday’s final round that he felt as if he was going to make every putt he looked at, and he played that way again under the gun. He took 27 putts while hitting 10 of 14 fairways and 13 greens in regulation.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - J ason ’s M ajor day ! and see his mother cutting the lawn with a knife because the lawnmower was broken and they didn’t have the money to fix it. So poor that the family sometimes had to heat up kettles for hot showers. Golf was his way out. He won the Queensland Amateur at 16 and a Web.com Tour event at 19, becoming the youngest to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event—Day would rue his missed chances in the majors. And it wasn’t just this summer. There was the tie for second at the 2011 Masters, and the solo second at the U.S. Open later that year. He lost much of 2012 to injuries, but finished in the top 10 at three of the four majors in 2013. He tied for fourth at the 2014 U.S. Open. Day’s victory came in the third straight major in which he had either led or shared the 54-hole lead, and was his third title on Tour so far in 2015. It also comes with a $1.8 million check, another reminder of just how far he’s come. That was what he was thinking of as he broke down crying even as he cleaned up his two-putt par at the 18th hole around dinnertime on the Sunday.

But on Sunday at Whistling Straights, the trophy was Day’s, and the emotion poured out of him. He and Swatton shared an emotional embrace on the green, and Day’s son Dash tapped him on the leg and hugged him next. There was wife Ellie and Day’s

The son of Queensland meat workers, Day bought school clothes one year at St. Vincent de Paul—everything he could cram in a bag for $5. He first hit balls at age 6, using a 3-wood his dad, Alvin, found on a trash heap, but he was preoccupied with other sports. That changed when Alvin died of stomach cancer. Jason, 12, started to drink. He got in fights. His mother sent the boy to a golf academy, which doubled as a boarding school, and Day connected with Col Swatton, the golf coach. They’ve been inseparable ever since, with Swatton serving as Day’s coach and caddie. “He means the world to me,” Day said on the Sunday night. Day spoke of his father’s death being the catalyst for the rest of his life, starting with his family scraping together enough money to get him out of his deadend town. “My mom took a second mortgage out on the house,” Day said. “Borrowed money from my aunt and uncle, just to get me away from where I was to go to school, seven hours drive. longtime agent, Bud Martin. They’d stuck with him as Day’s mother and sisters stuck with him all those years ago when he was a lost soul. “I knew today was going to be tough,” Day said afterward, “But I didn’t realize how tough it was going to be.” In fact, he called Sunday’s final round, “probably the hardest round of golf I’ve ever had to play.” It only made the reward that much sweeter.

MANYAMA COMPLETES HIS “GRAND SLAM” AT PGA CHAMPS

to the PGA of South Africa that they helped to make this possible for me,” he said. “The PGA of South Africa is honoured to have assisted Theo in this regard and we commend Theo on the friendships he has built within the worldwide golf industry that ultimately made this dream possible,” said Ivano Ficalbi, Chief Executive of the PGA of South Africa.

O

n the same day that Gary Player was celebrating his 50th anniversary of winning the Major Grand Slam with the community in Soweto, another Soweto golfer was completing a Grand Slam of his own. Renowned South African rules official Theo Manyama attended the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits thanks to support from the PGA of South Africa. And with this he completed his own Grand Slam of having officiated at all of the four Majors. He is also the only South African rules official to achieve this. “I’m delighted to have completed my Grand Slam. It’s been a big dream of mine because I always felt that if I didn’t do the PGA Championship there would be something missing from my career. I am very grateful

34

Manyama has now officiated at 16 Masters, nine US Opens, 19 Open Championships, and one PGA Championship. And he says he has been overwhelmed by the support he has received from the South African golf community. “I’ve had so many South African golfers and caddies coming up to me and congratulating me, and telling me that I’ve made them proud. Gary Player is the only South African golfer who has won the Grand Slam. And I am very proud that I am the only South African rules official with a Grand Slam in officiating. I can honestly say this is the highlight of my career as a rules official.”

Mossel Bay’s golf property values on the rise

L

ooking for property on the Mossel Bay Golf Estate or at Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort? Now’s the time to invest, says Seeff Mossel Bay licensee, Kaaiman Schutte. “Estate living is a global trend that’s become particularly popular in South Africa, where a variety of residential, golf, and leisure estates have been developed over the past decade - and the trend shows no signs of slowing,” he said. In Mossel Bay, he said, Pinnacle Point and the Mossel Bay Golf Estate offer secure lifestyles in dramatically beautiful settings. “Both offer access to high quality recreational facilities, and, because of their sense of community, residents have good control over estate expenditure and development.” (The Pinnacle Point Homeowner’s Association recently announced extensions to its club house, which include the construction of a wellness centre, a heated indoor swimming pool, a beauty salon, a kiddies’ entertainment centre, and conference facilities for up to 80 people.) Kaaiman said that the market for primary residential properties in South Africa has been recovering over the last two years. “The leisure market in coastal towns like Mossel Bay which includes the golf estates - has shown significant growth since the last quarter of 2013,” he said. “But this isn’t unusual: we always see a pick-up in primary housing sales before secondary and leisure property buyers return to the market. “It appears that the renewed interest in second homes was driven by value chasers who took heed of talk that both

36

demand and prices are on the rise. Banks have also become more lenient in mortgage lending.” Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that the town itself is growing in popularity as an investment destination. “It isn’t hard to see why,” she said. “It’s well managed, safe and clean, and it offers excellent infrastructure (including private schools and the best-equipped hospital in the Western Cape outside of the Cape Town Metropole) - and an unparalleled lifestyle that anyone would envy.” Kaaiman said that buyers who’ve shown interest in Mossel Bay include retirees, married couples with young children, young single professionals, and foreign residents alike. “They’re all buying for similar reasons,” he said. “They want security for their families; they enjoy golf, nature and other recreational activities; and they’ve seen how the demand for this type of housing has created investment opportunities that will appreciate in value or generate good rental income over the medium and longer term - all of which they can find here in Mossel Bay.”

Harman shot a two-under final round of 68 to finish at two under par - 17 shots behind Day, who finished six strokes clear of the field.

So ek het vir my ‘n gimnasium by my huis ingerig sodat ek ook sterk, fiks en reg kan wees wanneer ek weer by Greg oorneem vir die volgende 6 weke.

Celebrating five years of Switzerland’s pop-up golf course

T

his is very interesting and one wonders if this could catch on in South Africa

When it launched five years ago, it could have been dismissed as a one-off event jumping on the back of the pop-up restaurant trend, a publicity stunt even, but the Golf Mountain pop-up course on Adelboden’s Engstligenalp has proved it has staying power and this year celebrates its fifth season, opening on 10th September and closing on 25th October. With 18 holes ranging from par 3s to a par 5s, Golf Mountain provides even the most skilled of golfers with a unique challenge. Hazards include streams and rocky outcrops as well as swirling mountain winds and extreme weather conditions – one minute, golfers might be in bright sunshine, the next in dense cloud.

52

The unpredictable conditions are worth enduring, however, as the stunning setting is a sight to behold. Located at 1,964 metres, making it the highest golf course in Europe, Engstligenalp is a nature reserve of other-worldly character with breathtaking views over the village of Adelboden, where the stresses of the everyday easily slip away. As a pop-up, the only part of the course that is properly laid out is the greens, which are created from artificial grass; the rest of the course is “au naturel”. In addition to the course, Golf Mountain has its own driving range and a traditional wooden Alpine chalet that is converted into a clubhouse every summer, complete with a pro, a pro shop for renting clubs, changing rooms, a cosy bar and rustic restaurant, serving local specialities such as fondue and raclette.

Mount Edgecombe Country Club,

twice as nice!

Mount Edgecombe Country Club is one of South Africa’s most impressive and successful golf estates boasting not one, but two, 18-hole Championship Golf Courses and a state-of-the-art driving range. Squash, tennis, bowls and angling we also offer.

O

f the two courses the older, Course One was upgraded about twenty years ago when the Mount Edgecombe Residential Estate was initially developed. Originally known as the Huletts Country Club, and created by Sid Brews in 1936, the course was upgraded and modernised in 1992 by Hugh Baiocchi, and is one of the few courses in the Country to meet the USGA specifications. Course One has a parkland layout and this extremely attractive golf course has hosted numerous amateur as well as professional tournaments and will therefore test any level of golfer. With four sets of tees, the course is playable by golfers of any handicap. The Club recently hosted a Sunshine Tour Event, the Sun Sibaya Challenge. The course received great reviews from the Professionals regarding the remarkable improvement to the greens, as well as the exceptional attention to detail on the course.

There are four special holes that constitute the course’s “Amen Corner” from the 13th to 16th. The 13th’s tough uphill Par 4 tee spot must be kept right of the large tree in the middle of the fairway. The second shot to a very narrow green. Holes 14 to 16 are where water hazards come into play. The first one is a par 5 with water guarding the green, followed by a par 3 across water, and a par 4 where a dam must be carried to reach the fairway. These 3 holes normally are the deciding holes in club championships.

Plans for the second course began in 1994. Daysen, De Villiers and Van de Merwe were commissioned to design the Championship Course directly south of the existing course on Estate 1. Course Two was opened at the end of ’97 and is undulating and different from Course One, with indigenous bush in places and its share of imposing water hazards. This course has its own small club house overlooking the Pani Dam where fish eagles can be spotted. The design philosophy adopted by the golf course architects was a course that is challenging, but fair – where a serious golfer could test his skills but an occasional golfer could enjoy the game.

Mount Edgecombe Country Club has become renowned as the top venue for the hosting and facilitating of corporate golf days. Top companies from all over South Africa have relied on the unparalleled service, efficiency and quality of the Club and its staff. With the two golf courses and a fleet of golf carts, the Club is capable of holding fields of up to 264 players. The professional infrastructure and world class facilities make it the ideal venue for the perfect golf day. Two memorable holes are the eighth and ninth, running alongside the Pani Dam to complete the front nine. Water guards the left side of the holes, and indigenous bush the right, so make sure that you’re accurate from the tee.

Mount Edgecombe Country Club has various stunning venues available for all your corporate and private functions. Their facilities will make sure that your wedding, conference, birthday, year-end function, cocktail party or even team building event is an unforgettable one!

In April of this year maintenance of the golf course was handed over to Matkovich Golf Course Maintenance and Mike Wallington, who already looks after Durban Country Club, Beachwood, San Lameer and Cotswold Downs and has in a short time improved the conditioning of the two courses substantially. The Country Club is currently in the more than capable hands of Desirée Stone who previously worked at Centurion, Copperleaf and Wingate before relocating to Durban.

Changes announced to Presidents Cup format.

T

he PGA Tour announced changes to the format of the Presidents Cup last month, revisions that will go into effect with the matches later this year in South Korea. The total number of matches will be reduced from 34 to 30, which remains slightly higher than the 28 matches contested at the Ryder Cup. While in previous years there were six four-ball and six foursomes matches across the first two days of the Presidents Cup – meaning each player on the 12-man rosters had to play both days – there will now be five matches per day. Saturday’s schedule will include four four-ball and four foursomes matches, as opposed to five matches per session, followed by 12 singles matches on Sunday. An additional change was made to match scoring, as matches that are tied after 18 holes will now be declared a draw, with half-points awarded.

September / October 2015

Each player from both the U.S. and International sides will be required to participate in two of the first four sessions, a reduction from the previous rule that required players to participate in three of the first four sessions. “I think just looking at the record of the Presidents Cup, we’re 1-9-1. I think all of us on the team feel that a points change would really make it more exciting and more competitive,” Price said earlier this month. “That’s the only reason that people say, well, it’s because you want to win. I think win, lose or draw, we all want to see it come down to the final match on Sunday instead of being done with eight matches left on the golf course on Sunday. That’s a big deal.” The Presidents Cup will be held Oct. 8-11 at Jack Nicklaus Golf Course Korea in Incheon, South Korea.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE

Barry Richards

South African cricketing legend 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? Born in Durban, attended Clifton Prep School and DHS. 2. You played in four test matches, opening the batting against Australia in 1969/70. South Africa won that home series 4-0 and you scored 508 runs at an average of 72.57, what stands out most in your memory about that series? Sadly, that it was my last.

5. Who was the best bowler that you ever faced? The conditions varied. I played on uncovered wickets, so somebody like Derek Underwood was very difficult on a wet wicket.

3. You bowled John Gleeson in Australia’s second innings of the first test. An opening batsman taking a wicket? That must have been special. A blind squirrel gets an acorn every now and again. 4. You played for Hampshire for many years where you forged a formidable opening partnership with West Indian Gordon Greenidge. The West Indies had such great players in that era and in par-

64

ticular an abundance of fast bowlers who could tear a team apart. Do you think that the modern game is perhaps becoming too dominated by the bat? Yes, rules, boundaries and bats have seen to that.

6. You were hugely successful in the Currie Cup which is today known as the Sunfoil Series, just how strong was the level of domestic cricket at that time? Yes, it was very strong because we had no Test cricket so Natal vs Transvaal was a test match. 7. What is your opinion on the third umpire, should technology be embraced in full or would it be best to let the on-field umpires have full control of the game? I think it’s very good but its work in progress.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE I think each player knows within himself when the right time is. I think he still has the talent to play for SA, but has he the motivation? 9. Does South Africa have a mental problem at World Cups or has it just been a case of bad luck? It’s a bit of both. 8. Do you think that Jacques Kallis retired at the right time?

10. What are you currently doing? Enjoying my life in Knysna with a lot of golf!

GETTING ON TO GOLF •

When did you start to play golf? When I was 40.

What is your current handicap? 7.

Where do you play out of? Pezula and Simola.

Which is your favourite South African golf course and why? St Andrews, because of the history.

Which is your most trusted golf club? 6 iron (certainly not the putter).

Do you walk or take a cart? Both – walk if I can.

Your favourite golfer would be? Nick Price (attitude), Ernie Els (wonderful swing) and Gary Player (the best ambassador for golf ).

• Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Two. •

Your ideal fourball would be? Ideally, I enjoy my golf with family members, but if you ask me for high profile golfers: Rory McIlroy, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and myself.

Dawie joins the PGA Tour

D

awie van der Walt will compete on the PGA Tour in 2016, a feat he achieved by finishing third on the Web.com Tour’s Money List this season.

The two-time European Tour winner, who also claimed the 2013 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, wrapped up a stellar season on the American feeder tour with a share of 26th at the Portland Open last month. While his result at that event was nothing to write home about, he had produced the goods earlier in the year, firstly with a victory at the season-opening Chile Classic in March. That week Van der Walt carded rounds of 64, 66, 68, 65 to clinch his maiden title on the Web.com Tour and then backed up the result with a share of ninth at the Louisiana Open a week later, solidifying his status as a contender on tour. He continued to add good results over the next three months, including a share of sixth at the Air Capital

66

Classic in June, but needed something big to secure his spot in the top 25 on the earnings list. His day would come at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in August, where he finished the week on 23-under-par and sealed his second win of the year. The victory placed Van Der Walt firmly within the top five on the Web.com Tour Money List and effectively guaranteed his playing privileges for the PGA Tour. He took to social media to express his happiness. “All the travel bags, hotels, and seemingly endless lonely nights on the road, when all you want to do is hold the people you are playing for, wash away on days like these. Today I fulfilled a dream and got my PGA Tour card. Missed birthdays, weddings, and years of sweat, struggle, and sacrifice went into reaching this goal. Thank you to all my friends and family, and most of all my girls BJ, Allie, and Mia for supporting me – I couldn’t have done it without you,” he wrote on Facebook.

Turning back the clock is the Golfer from the past?

WHO

• This golfer was born on August 12, 1891 and passed away on August 1, 1971. • He was the first U.S.-born golfer to win the U.S. Open, in 1911 and 1912. • He remains the youngest player to win the U.S. Open, at age 19. • He was one of the world’s top players between 1910 and 1914. • In 1914, he visited the UK to compete in the Open. On his way home his ship collided with another vessel. This dangerous incident had a serious effect on him. Upon his return home, he blacked out when entering the clubhouse where he was the club professional. He was 23 years old. He spent the rest of his life in mental hospitals and rest homes, or living with his family in Philadelphia, suffering from mental illness. He competed sporadically in regional golf events into the 1920s, but without notable success. He occasionally spectated at important golf events near his home, and watched the 1971 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, some six weeks before his death. • Golf historian Robert Sommers wrote that, if not for his illness, McDermott could have been the greatest of them all.

T

he European Tour and the Asian Tour have announced an innovative joint vision for the future of professional golf.

for our members to excel. This initiative will ultimately create an inimitable platform that will enhance our appeal to sponsors, partners and golf fans around the world.”

The vision will see the business element and the Membership portfolios of both Tours combine, reinforcing the current strengths of the two Tours by maximising global opportunities, as well as increasing playing opportunities and prize funds for the respective Memberships.

The agreement is the natural extension in the existing partnership between the two Tours which stretches back to February 1999 when the first co-sanctioned tournament – the Malaysian Open – was staged at Saujana GC in Kuala Lumpur.

Both organisations will now enter into an exclusive discussion period, working through the key points with their respective Boards, Tournament Committees and Memberships. Further information about the specific details will be announced in due course.

Since then there have been 92 co-sanctioned events offering considerable playing opportunities for Members of both Tours with total prize money in excess of €160 million.

Keith Pelley, Chief Executive Officer of The European Tour, said: “We have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the Asian Tour for many years and today’s announcement is the first step in the next stage of that partnership. “By combining strength with strength, we will ensure that professional golf in Asia will continue to enjoy sustained growth in the long-term; plus deliver a stronger platform

76

High profile winners from both Tours have tasted tournament victories during this period including seven Asian Tour Order of Merit winners – Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Arjun Atwal, Thongchai Jaidee, David Lipsky, Jeev Milkha Singh, Thaworn Wiratchant and Liang Wen-chong – and seven European Tour Major Champions; Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, José Maria Olazábal, and the reigning European Number One Rory McIlroy.

Prioritise Good Eye Care for World Sight Day and National Eye Care Awareness Month The last 20 years have seen a major improvement in eye technology, yet there are an estimated 285 million people worldwide who suffer from various eye conditions. According to a recent WHO study, approximately 39 million of these people are blind whilst others have low vision. Taking proper care of your eyes and having regular eye examinations are decisions only you can make and there is no better time to prioritise eye health than on World Sight Day (8 October 2015) and during National Eye Care Awareness Month from 21 September to 18 October 2015.

Eye care fit to a tee: eye care tips for golfers Glare and bright light on the green can make it challenging for golfers to focus on their tee and follow the ball. Everyday-wear sunglasses may not always offer golfers the best protection against damaging sunrays. The best solution for protecting your eyes against damaging rays are polarised lenses that can block 100% UV radiation and absorb other harmful light.

What is polarisation? Polarisation is when sunlight ‘ripples’ into

September / October 2015

various directions and hits a surface to cause a flux of light that reflects in one direction. The light can cause a blinding effect once it reaches your eyes. Polarised lenses eliminate most types of glare to improve contrast, make colours more brilliant and ensure outstanding vision, even under extreme light conditions.

Guidelines for selecting the right eyewear for the golf course: •

Consider wrap lenses and a curved optical frame and sunglasses to help block UV rays.

Did you know 90% of your movements are affected by what you see? Ask your optometrist whether your new or updated prescription lenses eliminate blurring on the margins of the lenses. If the lenses are distortion-free and professionally fitted, it can help avoid muscle and neck pain and ‘golfer’s elbow’ (pain on the inner side of the elbow).

Opt for light-weight optical frames. Contemporary materials such as titanium are ideal for lightweight frames. The frames are comfortable, are usually a better fit and are less likely to slip down your nose.

• Do not forget about semi-rimless optical frames which are best for large lenses and a wide field of view. •

Think twice about small lenses as these cause you to peek over the top of your frames. This is not ideal when focusing on different contrasts (blue sky and green golf course) and constant head movements can also become tiring.

• Considering a tint? Purple or yellow-orange tints are good alternatives for enhancing contrast on green surfaces, improving visual comfort and opti mising depth perception. The tint can help you spot breaks on the green and assess the ball trajec tory.

7 Reasons Why You Should Have Your Eyes Examined • • • • • • •

Should you lose your eyesight, it may never be reversed. Good vision allows a better quality of life. Unlike tooth ache, your eyes don’t necessarily ache when something is wrong. An eye examination can detect early signs of serious eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration, before you’re aware of any symptoms. An eye examination includes a general health check for injuries and abnormalities. The earlier the detection of a problem, the better the chance of successful treatment. Optometrists are often the first health care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol.

Regular eye examinations are important, regardless of one’s age or overall health. During an eye test, an optometrist doesn’t just examine the quality of your vision and whether you need spectacles or contact lenses or an adjusted prescription. An eye test will also include a general health check for any eye injuries, abnormalities and early signs of eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration before you’re aware of any symptoms – many of which can be successfully treated if detected early enough. Optometrists are often the first health care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes and cholesterol. Your eyes will also be checked to see how they work together as a “team”. • The earlier the detection of a problem, the better the chance of successful treatment. • Optometrists are often the first health care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol.

Optometrists generally recommend that most people should get their eyes tested every two years, however, in some circumstances, they may recommend more frequent eye examinations especially if you: • are a child wearing spectacles • have diabetes • are older than 40 years and have a family history of glaucoma • are aged 70 and older

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - G O O D E Y E C A R E

Facts on vision and blindness: •

Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with compromised vision and blindness

Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment

90% of blind people live in low-income countries

80% of visual impairment is avoidable - i.e. readily treatable and/or preventable

Restoration of sight, and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective inter ventions in health care

• The number of people blinded due to infectious causes has greatly reduced in the past 20 years • An estimated 19 million children are visually impaired •

About 65 % of all people who are visually impaired are aged 50 and older, while this age group com prises only 20% of the world’s population

Increasing elderly populations in many countries mean that more people will be at risk of age-relat ed visual impairment.

An optometrist is a medical professional who is qualified to examine vision, provide guidance for good eye care and supply you with a copy of a new or updated prescription for spectacles and/or contact lenses. An optometrist should also be able to advise on further treatment or surgery and refer you to an eye specialist if necessary. Some optometrists may choose to specialise in certain areas such as children’s or sport vision, but should in any event be able to answer general eye health related questions and assist with eye concerns. In South Africa, in order for an optometrist to meet national standards and be recognised as a qualified professional, they need to be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). Although not compulsory, if an optometrist is listed with the South African Optometric Association (SAOA) this means they are recognised and noteworthy practitioners who value a strict and professional conduct in optometry. If your optometrist diagnoses vision problems, he or she should prescribe optical lenses that will improve your eyesight. The eyewear you select will however play a big role in how well you see and how comfortable you will be while performing daily tasks.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - G O O D E Y E C A R E

How do you know if your optometrist is giving you the best advice? Considering that the main purpose of new lenses is to improve your vision, it is important to be able to discuss your visual concerns with your optometrist and have the results of your test thoroughly explained. You should feel comfortable in asking questions about your eyesight, your current or new prescription, different lens options and have these answered with suitable examples. An optometry practice that distributes optical frames should offer a wide selection of fashionable eyewear to choose from. In addition to assisting you with your selection, your optometrist should recommend spectacles that meet your day-to-day visual needs.

To make the most of your appointment and become more informed patients should ask their optometrists the following questions (if the optometrist has not yet addressed them): •

What is the health condition of my eyes?

Has my prescription changed since my last eye examination?

What new lens enhancements or technological advances are available?

Are there new advances with regards to contact lenses or solution for contact lenses?

When should I wear my spectacles?

What lens types are available and what are the pros and cons of each?

When should I go for my next eye examination?

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - G O O D E Y E C A R E

Here are some more tips to see whether your optometrist measures up: •

The optometry practice is well-managed, organised and has a broad selection of optical frames.

When selecting spectacles, your optometrist should advise you on the correct frame for your face shape and give advice on aspects such as whether the frames are lightweight, flexible, non-allergic, comfortable to wear and suitable for your lens design.

Most practices are happy to provide eyewear inspections, cleaning and adjustments of your specta cles at no additional cost.

When you collect your new spectacles, your optometrist should once again check whether the right prescription lenses have been fitted to your chosen frames. Your optometrist should also note whether the frames fit properly on your face or need to be readjusted. The frames should not add unnecessary pressure on the bridge of your nose, temples or above the ears and should not slip off your nose when looking down.

The optometrist should provide you with a valid copy of your new or updated prescription for your spectacles or contact lenses. When travelling or on holiday, this can be useful when having to replace broken, lost or stolen spectacles.

How can vision problems put you further at risk? Serious health problems can trigger vision loss, but many people are not aware that eye problems can also put their life at risk. Here is why taking proper care of your eyes is essential: •

Low vision can be fatal. Day-to-day tasks such as driving and climbing stairs can become more challenging if you can’t see clearly. A 2014 JAMA Ophthalmology study estimated a 31% increased risk of mortality among the 2 520 participants who had difficulty perform ing basic tasks due to low vision.

Irregular eye examinations can mean serious health problems. Optometrists are often the first medical professionals to detect early signs of systemic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

Anxiety and depression aren’t strangers to people with eye problems. According to a 2014 report from the US National Library of Medicine, people with low vision are often more stressed, frustrated, dissatisfied and tend to have a lower quality of life than people with 20/20 vision.

L AUGH OUT LOUD

Something Funny! Mulligan

A Australian citizen is vacationing on his own in Ireland. He decides to play a round of golf and is paired with three local gents. He takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partners that he is taking a Mulligan. He pounds one down the center of the fairway about 280 yards out. With a big smile, he asks the others “In the U.S., we call that a Mulligan; was wondering what you called it here in Ireland.” After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, “Hitting three.”

Weight

A recent study had some interesting conclusions on the weight of golfers in a particular summer industrial golf league. This study indicated that the single golfers who play in these leagues are ‘skinnier’ than the married ones. The study’s explanation for this result was interesting. It seems that the single golfer goes out and plays his round of golf, has a ‘refreshment’ at the 19th hole, goes home and goes to his refrigerator, finds nothing decent there and goes to bed. The married golfer goes out and plays his round of golf, has a ‘refreshment’ at the 19th hole, goes home and goes to bed, finds nothing decent there, so he goes to his refrigerator.

Secrets Of Great Golf

A reporter was interviewing Jack Nicklaus. He said, “Jack, you are spectacular, your name is synonymous with the game of golf. You really know your way around the course. What is your secret?” To which Jack replied, “The holes are numbered!”

Note

I came home from golfing today. The wife left a note on the fridge: “It’s not working, I can’t take it anymore!! Gone to stay with my Mother.” I opened the fridge, the light came on, and the beer was cold......... What the hell is she talking about?

Back Spin

Arnold Palmer is playing in a big tournament and comes to a 235 yard par-3. After some deliberation, he takes out his 3 iron and sails the ball 20 feet over the pin and spins backs to within 3 feet of the pin. A fan in the crowd said “Mr. Palmer, how do you make a 3 iron spin back like that?” Mr. Palmer replied, “Do you own a 3 iron?” The fan said, “Yes, sir I do.” “How far do you hit it?” said Palmer. About 160 yards was his reply. Palmer calmly said, “What the hell do you want it to spin back for?

Take It With You

One day a golfer brought his regular golfing buddies together, and gave them each $50,000 cash and instructed them that upon his death, they were to throw it into the coffin, because he wanted to take it with him. As luck would have it, he died soon after. When the funeral was over, his buddies met. The doctor in the group said “I have a confession to make. I put in an empty envelope and I used the money to buy equipment for the free clinic.” The priest said “Me too, only I used the money to help build the youth center.” Somewhat shocked, the last member of the group, a lawyer, said “I can’t believe you guys went back on your word.” They asked him if he actually put the $50,000 in the coffin. He replied “I most certainly did....with my very own personal check.”
