PGA NEWS AGM and Class of 2012 graduates The PGA of SA held their graduation ceremony for their Gauteng Graduates at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf club recently.

The Gauteng graduation group for 2012

PGA apprentices have to complete a rigorous 3 year Diploma standard course with subjects such as Coaching, Sports Science, Equipment Technology, Business Finance and Business Law as well as completing three years working in the golf industry, practical assessments and passing a playing ability test. Once again Titleist added to the prestige of the programme and generously sponsored the Academic Achievement award for the top 5 graduates who were: Johann Naude (My Golf Academy) Juan Haggard (Walmer Country Club) Gavin Sumption (Wanderers Golf Club) Mario van Zyl (Dubai) Pieter de Wet (The Golf School of Excellence) Also held that day was the PGA’s national AGM where amongst other business conducted, the new board of Directors was elected. Incumbent members Louis Destroo (Stellenbosch Golf Club), Paul Marks (Woodhill Country Club), Nic Grundtvig (Pinnacle Point), Martin Briede (Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club) and Wayne

Krambeck (Cotswold Downs) were confirmed and newly elected onto the board were: Phil Simmons (Mt Edgecombe Golf Club), Dave Usendorff (Inside Right Golf Management), and Michael Balderstone (The Golf School of Excellence) After a term of 13 years on the board and 8 years as chairman, Craig Ross, (General Manager of the River Club) stood down. We asked Craig what the biggest changes he had seen to the PGA during his term were and he said that the implementation of an internationally recognized Education programme, the growth of the PGA in terms of numbers of members from 200 to 500 members and the wide variety of positions that golf professionals find themselves in now. He said that the PGA brand has become more widely recognized and respected but that there is still work to be done to make the golfing public understand that as compared to Tour Players, the PGA is grass roots ie PGA members help the golfer to play golf and with anything that relates to golf. The Board will elect a new Chairman at their next board meeting.

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). If your letter is published you will win a two night weekend stay for two sharing, including three meals and two game drives at Mabula Game Lodge located in the Mabula Private Game Reserve in the Limpopo Province.

WINNING LETTER Dear Editor As an enthusiastic golf fan and player and after watching countless masters and loving every minute of them. I feel obliged to write to you and comment on the state of this great game. The chairman of Augusta National this year once again danced around the subject of female membership. I do not care if they ever actually have a female member; however, they can not be permitted to avoid the subject. Yes they are a private club and as such can do as they please. But The Masters is not--it is very public. Sanctioned by the PGA [Tour] and as such they must be forced to address this issue.

The chairman boasted that they would be watched in over 200 countries, that they put a great deal of time, money and effort into the future of this great game. That they would lead or follow. They are way too late to lead, so when they reach out to our kids to bring them into this game, as we all agree they are the future. What exactly is their message: 'Hello boys and girls. If you play this great game and get to be one of the world's elite players, one day you too could play here at the Augusta National. Oh, we mean just you boys; you girls are not welcome.' Traditions are important. However, when it comes to traditions Augusta National is very young. The British royal family has had traditions in place for hundreds of years. Recently they upgraded one of their oldest traditions. No longer is it the first male born that is Heir to the throne of England, but the firstborn no matter which sex that child is. Even monarchies have seen there is no place for sex discrimination in this modern world. Step to the tee August National and take your rightful place in golf's future.

Perception of discrimination by not clearly stating otherwise is as bad as discriminating. I think we would all agree that in our modern world any form of discrimination is unacceptable. To discriminate against another for any reason is wrong; it is an evil from past times. The PGA [Tour] is doing nothing. If the PGA [Tour] associates with a tournament then they are saying we approve this tournament. If that tournament has the perception of discrimination, Regards then they are in turn approving that discrimination Ben Powe by association. Dear Ben

Thank you for the letter. At the time of writing this Condoleezza Rice, the former U.S. defence secretary and Darla Moore, a banking executive have accepted invitations to become the first female members in Augusta’s history, seems they are moving with the times. Regards

Congratulations to Ben – you have won a weekend getaway to Mabula Game Lodge. September/October 2012

Win 1 of 3 Geneva “Fight Cancer Like A Girl” Watches For Breast Cancer Awareness Month In South Africa more than 8000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. However, by doing regular self-examinations and undergoing regular medical checkups, early breast cancer detection can reduce risk and save lives. This is the message that International Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims to promote, year on year. Cancer might not affect everyone, but everyone can help fight it. You can help fight it by actively supporting a cancer initiative such as the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) through donating your time, buying their products or taking part in drives that help support the cause. CANSA is a leader in the fight against cancer in South Africa and their main objectives are to enable cancer research, educate the public and provide support to people who are affected by cancer. We at SA Golf Trader believe in the work CANSA does and to show our support we will be giving away three Geneva “Fight Cancer Like A Girl” watches to three lucky readers. These watches are an initiative from Questia Golf Glamour, a Pretoria based ladies golf apparel & golf accessories company. R50 from each watch sold will be donated to CANSA and the money collected will go towards CANSA’s Women’s Health campaign. High-tech testing of disabled golfers part of joint SU, Irish research project Can the handicapping system used for golfers be applied directly to golfers with physical disabilities? This is what researchers from Stellenbosch University and the University of Limerick in Ireland have set out to test in a joint research project that explores the areas of sport vision and biomechanics in golf. During the course of ten days, the researchers from the Sport Technology Unit of the Centre for Human Performance Sciences at Stellenbosch University, and the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick tested 28 high-performance golfers and 15 golfers with physical disabilities. The Centre for Human Performance Sciences is one of Stellenbosch University’s HOPE Projects through which research is put into practice to the benefit of specific communities. The golf project is an extension of the partnership between Stellenbosch University and the University of Limerick within the European Union’s Erasmus Mundus Masters in Adapted Physical Activity (APA). The necessary precision testing and monitoring of the driving and putting abilities of these golfers were completed using the Tobii visual gaze tracking instrument and ultrasound-based technology of the Sam PuttLab and FlightScope. The data were collected at the indoor facilities of the Swingfit Performance Academy at De Zalze Golf Estate outside Stellenbosch.

Riaan Spreeth, DrIanKenny, DrMarkCampbell and Sean Surmon

While golfers were showing their form over a total of 20 6-foot and 8-foot putts, 28 different crucial variables were measured. During the putting exercise each golfer’s visual gaze, swing pattern and point of ball contact were recorded. During the driving exercise, aspects such as the direction 10

of flight of the ball, the spin of the ball, and the point of impact on the ball from the club were measured. “It’s all about finding similarities and differences in the biomechanics and visual skills between an able-bodied and disabled golfer, and then comparing that information to their currently assigned golf handicap” says Mr Shaun Surmon, Manager for Research and Development for the SU Centre for Human Performance Sciences. Unlike Paralympic sports, in which athletes take part in various categories based on their specific disabilities, people with all types of disabilities play against each other in golf based on a golf handicapping system. According to anecdotal reasoning, the fact that people have a disability – be it deafness, blindness, cerebral palsy or an amputation – should not be a consideration in classifying them for golf competition. Their ability to play golf should be the only consideration in categorising them for participation in golf. “With this research we want to test if this is indeed true, or whether it would be more ‘fair’ to modify the golf handicapping system when applying it to golfers with disabilities,” says Mr Surmon. According to Dr Ian Kenny of the University of Limerick’s Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, golf is set to become an Olympic sport again in 2016, which makes the chances therefore very good for it to also be included in the 2020 Paralympics. He says that once the research is published, recommendations based on their analysis of the results will be sent to the international governing bodies of golf as well as disabled golf to take into account when considering golf as a Paralympic sport event. According to Mr Surmon, it’s not just the researchers who benefit from this project. “All participants received an easy-to-understand graphic report about their putting performance, as well as a video of their driving abilities which they can again use in conjunction with a coach to fine-tune their game.” “In their take-home feedback each golfer’s performance on our tests were compared to the performances of golfers playing in the European professional tournaments,” he explains. “These feedback reports are quite valuable for the continued assessment and further honing of each golfer’s game,” said Mr Dawie van Wyk of the Swingfit Performance Academy.

Groete,

TUITION SPECIAL & INSTRUCTION FEATURE

The Lower Back & Abdominals By Roger Wessels and Jan Fourie Hitting a long ball into play off the tee does a few things for golfers; a sense that all is well with the world and add to that some bragging rights! But more importantly it allows the player to be more competitive. There are no secrets to hitting the ball long; you need a high swing speed and a square strike on the ball. Generating a high swing speed whilst maintaining stability to achieve consistency is the tough part, hence the theme for this article in highlighting the lower back and abdominals.

Roger Wessels – Golf Director KeNako Golf & Sports Academy

The lower back and abdominals are probably the most important areas of the body for golf. Golf demands a player to have strength in these areas for 2 fundamental physical skills: 1. Stability to maintain the spine angle – this is where the consistency in strike is created 2. Power, through generating rotational acceleration – the clubhead speed Let’s have a closer look at what both of these skills mean; which muscles are involved; and what exercises you can do to improve them.

20

www.sagolftrader.co.za

September/October 2012

TUITION & INSTRUCTION

1. Stability to maintain the spine angle: This is the ability to keep your pelvis and lumbar spine at the same angles throughout the golf swing. It requires strength in the deep Abdominal muscles, such as the Transverse Abdominis and Internal Oblique, as well as the deep Spinal Extensors (Multifidus). There is a tremendous force placed on the body through the hitting zone and players with a lack of strength in these areas will battle to maintain the “bent-over” posture , and rise to a more upright position (early extension causing blocked shots or big draws and hooks) as they perform the down-swing. 2. Power, through generating rotational acceleration: To generate a powerful rotation in the down swing, the motion has to start from the pelvis and abdominal area. The more superficial External Oblique muscle is responsible for rotation of the lower torso and pelvis, independent of each other. These muscles allow a player to rotate the pelvis first, stabilize it, and then rotate the abdominal and lower back area to transfer the energy up and into the shoulders, arms and ultimately the clubhead. A great exercise to strengthen these muscles for stable and powerful abdominals and lower back is the “Bent-over Oblique Rotation”: 1. Hold on to a D-handle, attached to a low pulley. Turn so that one shoulder points to the resistance equipment. 2. Move away from the resistance equipment far enough for the weights to lift, ensuring that there is tension on the cable. 3. Go down into the Dead Lift posture, with your weight pushed back into your Hamstrings and the spine straight. 4. With arms straight, use the Oblique muscles to rotate your torso away from the pulley, keeping the pelvis still. Return back to the starting position. 5. Perform 3 sets of 20 fast repetitions on each side. Some of us are blessed with bodies that have the necessary stability, strength and power which creates the sequence to hit that long ball, but for those who do not have that ability all is not lost - a little effort in the gym working on the right areas could well add distance to your tee shots and have you collecting the longest drive prize after golf!

ON TOUR WITH TANDI

Tandi on Tour The last few weeks has seen the Ladies European Tour playing its United Kingdom string of events. The Ladies Irish Open was held in the first week August at Killeen Castle Golf Club which was also the venue for 2011 Solheim Cup that saw the European Team successfully retain the coveted trophy in a nailbiting final day of singles matchplay last September.

T

he Ladies Irish Open is always an event where the weather plays a key role in the conditions, playability and ultimately what side of the draw you get is key. This year was no different where I recall in my second round we had a total of six rain storms blow through in one round. Needless to say temperatures rarely get above 15 degrees celcius and the worst part is that is summer in Ireland. The best finishing South African competitor that week was Stacy Bregman on a score of +8 and 48th placing followed by Connie Chen who finished 64th. It is almost ironic that the European Team won on a Jack Nicklaus design course however it is by far one the favourite courses amongst the South African players due its 'target' style of golf in the wet conditions. Players missing the cut were Lee Ann Pace, Laurette Maritz and myself. In the gap week between the Irish Open and the British Masters, most players stay in the UK with family or friends. I however returned back home to South Africa for a week and a good golfing jolly in Nelspruit, Mpumalunga, another one of my favourite places and golfing destinations. I then returned to the UK for the ISPS Ladies British Masters which was held at Buckinghamshire Golf Club, Denham, England. I was greatly surprised with the Buckinghamshire Golf Club and what a fantastic hidden gem of a golf course it is. The course is wonderfully picturesque in the beautiful English country side and is 22

carved inbetween lovely flowing links grass and hundred year old oak trees. The gusting wind is what makes the course challenging and the prevailing winds are always coming either into or behind you at an angle and not one hole plays straight into or down wind. The final three holes which were reversed for the event are clearly make or break holes and great finishing holes. They definately test a players grit, risk or reward tendancies. The 17th is a drivable par 4 only if the wind is blowing in the correct direction and the green is well guarded by water and bunkers. The South African players had an impressive showing that week with the best placed player during the week being Stacey Bregman and Ashley Simon on tied 3rd and a score of 5 under par. Following them was Lee Ann Pace in tied 11th and 3 under par, myself on 1 under and tied 18th, Connie Chen on 2 over par and 37th, and Laurette Maritz on 61st position. The upcoming events on the Ladies European Tour schedule are the Reiffeissen Austrian Open in Vienna first week of September followed by the Ricoh Ladies British Open at Hoylake and then the Ladies Open De Espana in Tenerife. The South Africans participating in the 2012 British Open include Ashley Simon, Lee Ann Pace and myself. This will be my first Open and first Major event since turning professional in NovemSeptember/October 2012

ber 2008. Needless to say I am hugely excited and feel like a horse in the starting block. The Open this year is being played much later on in the season than normal due to a shuffling around of events to accommodate the 2012 London Olympic Games. September is normally the start of their change of season as they head in Autumn so temperatures can drop down and become very cool. Rain jacket, thermals, beanie and gloves are going to be the first items I pack! Playing Royal Liverpool, Hoylake will also be a real treat as the course and venue is steeped in history as well as British Open drama. Maybe I can pull a little 'Ben Curtis'? Other news from Tour is that Stacey Bregman and Lee Anne Pace will both be attending the second stage LPGA Tour School at the end of September to qualify for the US Tour Cards for the 2013 season. Sunshine Tour pros weigh in on long putter debate The debate about the legality of long or belly putters is not only raging amongst global golf ’s governing bodies, but also on the Sunshine Tour. With three of the past five Major winners using long or belly putters, the Royal & Ancient and the US Golf Association are said to be closer than ever to agreeing on a final way forward in terms of banning these putters. Zimbabwean professional Mark Williams used a long putter for the first time in his career during last month’s Vodacom Origins of Golf at Selborne, and in the second round he signed for an eight-under-par 64 “It definitely helps on putts from inside 10 feet. I’ve been struggling with that distance. Those are the ones for birdie or to save par. I feel you do give a little away on the longer putts. It’s tougher to judge the pace. But it’s working for me, and it’s giving me an advantage at the moment.” McGuigan’s rounds of 68 and 66 for the lead this week have been achieved with the traditional short putter. And he believes that’s the way it should stay in this game. “I don’t believe in these putters. Putting is about nerves, and the long putter helps with nerves because the anchoring makes for less moving parts during the putt. When you’re nervous under the gun, you really feel it in your forearms and your hands. But that’s part of the game. The long putter or anchoring takes this out of the game. I always say that at the highest level, if you can’t run the 100 metres in under 10 seconds, they don’t let you start at the 90-metre mark.” Adilson da Silva, winner at Selborne thinks it’s a mental thing. You see the guys holing putts from everywhere with these long putters, and maybe those who don’t agree with it are a bit jealous and wish they could be holing putts like that.

BRADLEY WINS 2012 WGC – BRIDGESTONE INVITATIONAL FOR THIRD PGA TOUR VICTORY HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – Cleveland® Golf/Srixon® congratulates staffer Keegan Bradley for his victory at the 2012 World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational, held at Firestone Country Club’s South Course, in Akron, Ohio. Winning his first PGA TOUR title of 2012 and third of his career, Bradley carded a 6-under-par 64 to finish at 13-under-par 267 and collect the $1.4 million winner’s check. The 26-year-old was four shots off the lead heading into the final round, and found himself six shots back when the tournament leader opened with three straight birdies. But Bradley, the reigning PGA TOUR Rookie Of The Year, kept pecking away at the lead, holing a 25-foot birdie putt on the seventh and then notching four more birdies on the back nine. On the final hole, Bradley needed a seemingly improbable up-and-down from a plugged lie in a greenside bunker to win. He played his bunker shot to 15 feet and drained the putt, adding another dramatic moment and victory to his highlight-filled first two years on Tour. “I just kept telling myself that this is the exact moment that I live for, that you play golf for, that you grow up your whole life, and I’m living it,” said Bradley. “It’s just an amazing feeling to be in that moment and just loving every second of it.” For the week, Bradley led the field in birdies and tied for sixth in Driving Accuracy. The defending PGA Champion now moves into fourth place in the U.S. Ryder Cup team standings and seventh place in the FedEx Cup standings. 26

A new ball that’s saving golfers’ lives Golf ball technology is renowned for its ability to allow players to hit the ball further or with greater control. Millions are spent on marketing the latest golf ball technology, and equipment companies will invest up to $200-million in the research and development of a new ball. But in South Africa, a revolutionary little ball is quite literally saving lives – off the fairways. As the annual Sanlam Cancer Challenge wrapped up its nationwide club competitions in July, the most talked about balls involved brands such as Titleist, Srixon, Callaway, Nike and so on. But when it comes to making the greatest impact in South Africa’s largest charity golf initiative, the P-Ball has been the clear winner. Every year, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge raises millions of rands for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) through its club competitions from March to July, then the Regional Finals from August to September, and culminating in the National Finals at Sun City in October. But even more important is the cancer awareness the competition generates. The P-Ball is a ball made of biodegradable powder that dissolves in liquid. It is used to detect the early signs of prostrate cancer. Basically, if a person is unable to completely dissolve the ball when urinating, they may have prostrate cancer. September/October 2012

Alfred Dunhill Championship becomes richest event on Sunshine Tour JOHANNESBURG – The Alfred Dunhill Championship will become the richest tournament on the Sunshine Tour when it takes place at Leopard Creek Country Club from December 13-16 this year. With a prize fund of €1.5million – an increase of more than 50 per cent – the tournament, which is cosanctioned by the European Tour, will also carry a two-year exemption on the European Tour for the winner. “We’re very pleased that the relationship with our longest-standing sponsor on the Sunshine Tour continues,” said Sunshine Tour Executive Director Selwyn Nathan. “And we’re delighted that one of the Sunshine Tour’s best tournaments now carries a reward for the winner which is appropriate for the prestige of the event.” Christopher Colfer, Chief Executive of Alfred Dunhill, said: "Everyone at Alfred Dunhill is passionate about golf and we are very proud of the support we have been able to give golf in South Africa over the years. “The Alfred Dunhill Championship goes back to 2000, but of course we supported the South African PGA Championship for five years before that. We are delighted with the way the Alfred Dunhill Championship has grown as an event and I am thrilled that we are now able to make a further significant investment by increasing the prize fund. This will enable the Championship to grow in stature and ensure that it continues to attract the best possible field." The Alfred Dunhill Championship first took place at Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg in 2000, so the 2012 tournament will be its 13th playing. This year’s defending champion is Garth Mulroy, and former winners include Ernie Els, Charl Schwartzel and Richard Sterne, as well as the man Els beat to win his second Open Championship at Royal Lytham last month, Australia’s Adam Scott, who took the title in 2001. Young star bags Els’s SA caddie After claiming his maiden victory on the Sunshine Tour in July, Allan Versfeld entrenched his status as one of the rising stars of South African golf. Simon Masilo certainly sees him as such. As the regular caddie for Ernie Els whenever he’s played in South Africa for the past 17 years, Masilo knows a thing or two about a good golf swing. The 56-year-old Masilo was just about ready to retire as a fulltime caddie when the call came through to work with Versfeld. “We started at the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at Selborne and finished in a tie for 5th. Versfeld will have to make way for Els when the reigning Open champion returns to South Africa for a few tournaments at the end of the year. Masilo will be on hand to take Els’s bag, as always. “When Ernie comes back, hopefully I’ll have his bag again. He’s the man, and he takes good care of me,” says Masilo, who was one of the first to send Els a text message congratulating him on his Open triumph. September/October 2012

Exclusive Interview with Greg Norman Brought to us by KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice

Greg Norman has long been considered one of the most successful athletes turned businessmen. By all accounts, this is a man who understood the value of branding early on in his career and decided to invest in building his own brand rather than endorsing someone else’s. This strategic business move has obviously served him well as the “Shark” is now recognized among lifestyle brands created by some of sports most iconic figures, such as tennis legend Rene Lacoste. Normans’ clothing brand, which is identified by his infamous shark logo, is among the top brands in the golf apparel industry and Greg Norman Estates Wine consistently sells over 150,000 cases of wine annually. While other golfers may tout more expensive wines for the discerning palette, none come close when it comes to sheer volume of sales. And then there is Greg Norman Eyewear, Greg Norman Australian Wagyu Beef, Greg Norman branded real estate, the Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy, the Greg Norman Production Company and Greg Norman Golf Course Design. Among all of these businesses, golf course design just may be the one that Norman enjoys the most. The Shark’s thriving golf course design business has primarily focused on designing new golf courses around the world, but in recent years his company has begun working with existing courses in need of a facelift in order to help them compete with some of their younger, more modern counterparts. Norman has several projects, currently underway where he has been hired to re-design the course, which will then be rebranded as a Greg Norman Signature Design. Among these projects, is the Ponderosa Golf Club in British Columbia, Canada. This was an existing 18 hole facility that sits on the side of Pincushion Mountain overlooking the Okanagan Lake. “We really saw tremendous value in associating our entire project with the Great White Shark brand which stands for high quality and perfection within the golf lifestyle industry. These additional branding opportunities really helped us make our decision to work with Greg Norman to redesign and rebrand our golf course,” said Norm Porter, owner and developer at Ponderosa Golf Club in British Columbia. “We really felt like these additional branding opportunities set the Greg Norman Golf Course Design company apart from their competition. Having these additional branding and marketing tools at our dis32

posal has really helped us differentiate our product in the market place and elevate the status of our property.” Norman is also redesigning The East Course at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide, Australia which also happens to be the site of Norman’s first victory as a professional at the age of 22. Norman won the 1976 West Lakes Classic over the likes of established golfing legends, David Graham, Graham Marsh, Bruce Devlin and Bruce Crampton. Norman returned to the site of his first professional victory to focus his efforts on the redesign of the East Course which will open later this year.

Continued from p33 Recently KPMG had a chance to sit down with Greg Norman to discuss his company, Great White Shark Enterprises, including his golf course design business and his opinions on the state of the golf course design industry. KPMG: Greg Norman Golf Course Design has been in business a quarter of a century now. You’ve designed more than 74 golf courses on six continents that have won numerous, prestigious awards for design, and many of the projects bearing your name have garnered awards for environmental stewardship. Norman-designed golf courses have hosted sanctioned events on the PGA, Nationwide, European and Australasian Tours. What is your general design philosophy? Is there a particular legacy you like to leave behind with every golf course you design? GN: Having grown up in Australia, I guess you could say I’ve always been somewhat of a naturalist. I’ve always loved being outdoors and close to nature. So taking a very minimalist approach to golf course design was very easy for me. I always try to find something inspiring on a particular site or in a region we’re working in that I can incorporate into the design of the course. I am a firm believer in using what Mother Nature has given you and I try hard to incorporate this philosophy all the way through planning, construction and operation of each course. This not only helps control costs, but also keeps the course as natural and as visually pleasing as possible. In the old days, the architects whom we now consider the masters only had a horse drawn plow. They didn't have bulldozers to push dirt around, so their approach sometimes seems minimalist when we consider it today. But I love their philosophy and I continue to put it into practice today. Obviously we can’t do that on every project due to site conditions, but it’s very rewarding when you can create something you know will be sustainable from both an environmental and economical standpoint for many years to come. I’m very proud of the fact we have about 38 jobs under contract right now, even in this tough economic environment. Not all of them are under construction, but we continue to sign jobs. It’s a very, very tough environment, but for us to be able to say that we have almost a dozen golf courses under construction right now is fantastic in this environment. That’s what I like. Your credentials speak for themselves. Continued on p40

Continued from p34 KPMG: What are the biggest challenges facing the golf industry and the golf course design industry in particular? GN: Obviously the global economic downturn is having the biggest negative effect on almost every sector of the golf industry. But we all have to adjust our business models and the way we do things to meet the current market. From a design standpoint, what worked three to five years ago doesn’t work at all today and we have to factor that in from the initial planning stages all the way through construction and operation of our courses. At the end of the day, financial sustainability is just as important as environmental sustainability because you can’t have one without the other. KPMG: Can you elaborate a little more on economic sustainability? GN: Sure, in the not so distant past we were in a period of golf course development in many parts of the world where no expense was spared. Both residential and resort golf development became about who could build the biggest and best in a particular market. And when the crisis hit, most owners of these properties were left with a course that not only costs millions to build, but millions to maintain as well. So ultimately these costs either get handed down to the members and resort guests or absorbed by the developer. When you go from opening 350 plus courses a year to closing over 150, like what happened last year in the United States, other Countries try to learn from those mistakes. So these other countries, where we go, they have observed that, and they are aware of that. The word “sustainability” is very much in the forefront of everyone’s mind as they go forward and build golf courses. So you don’t just go down there and blast away and have an unlimited budget. People are much more financially and fiscally responsible these days. To be honest, most companies who have been involved with golf development at the mid to upper end of any market in the last ten years are guilty of this to some degree, but now we have to change our philosophy so we can make sure that this great game of golf continues to grow. Designers in particular have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience from the downturn and it is our collective responsibility to use this knowledge to perpetuate the game on a global basis. As we look at emerging golf markets in developing countries, it is more important than ever that we learn something from these past mistakes in the United States and work hard to design and redesign courses in an effort to make them more environmentally and economically sustainable. In the United States in particular, we have seen a strong movement towards golf course renovation and redesign. Many buyers are looking to take advantage of the market and acquire golf courses for less than a quarter of what they cost to originally develop. In many cases, the acquisition will involve an older golf course that is in need of capital improvements to help them compete with some of their more modern counterparts. My design company has several projects, currently underway where we have been hired to come in and re-design the course which will then be rebranded as a Greg Norman Design. And our branded course will give older existing golf courses a chance to compete with newer courses in the area for a fraction of the cost. The key is that these improvements need to be responsible and allow the owner to recoup their investment while offering greens fees and memberships that are competitive in their respective market. KPMG: Do you see golf course redesign and renovation as a wave of the future? Do you feel that your design philosophy lends itself well to redesign or renovation work. GN: Yes, in certain markets that are saturated with an abundance of golf courses like the United States, redesign and renovation will be more prevalent than new design and construction of golf courses. However, we are still seeing new golf course projects in emerging markets so it really depends on what part of the world you are in and supply and demand. As to your second question, I think that it’s our responsibility as golf course designers to implement a design approach that will help leave the owner/developer with a more sustainable golf course. Continued from p36 A least disturbance design approach such as the one that my firm implements, happens to be one way to accomplish this goal. It’s also crucial that while going through the redesign and renovation process, we are conscious of future maintenance and operating costs that the owner will be left with. If we can treat each project as if we were spending our own money and we were the owner, than the project will be better off in the long run. KPMG: During your playing career, you maintained an active membership in the U.S., European and Australasian Tours, and now your businesses—take you all over the world. What are some trends in golf that you are seeing in your world travels? Is the game of golf growing? Is there a next, great emerging destination? GN: Where I love seeing the growth, honestly, is in countries in South America and in Asia, even though the Chinese have got this moratorium on building golf courses that’s still in place, there are other parts of Asia where golf is emerging and China will eventually loosen up. I think there’s going be a tremendous opportunity there in the future. But then you look at Eastern Europe, and look what’s happening in Turkey. I’m proud of a project we’ve got going in Jordan, just a magnificent project we have going there. So then you look at India, and I look at my homeland, which is still churning out golf courses. And the Pacific Rim, Southeast Asia. You’ve got to understand the market and where the market is. There is a bit of a shift toward the Third World parts of the globe right now. The Vietnamese government has been very emphatic in saying they would like to see 70 more golf courses in their country, because they think golf is great for their country, maybe because it brings tourism and real estate development, because for the Chinese it’s easier to get down there to play in the warmer climates during the winter. KPMG: You mentioned growing the game of golf to help the courses become more sustainable. In your travels what are some of the more creative things you have seen done to grow the game at a grass roots level? GN: I can’t stress enough how important this is. We need to work diligently to continue to grow the game by introducing the sport to our youth, who will one day make up the majority of our golfing population. This can be accomplished through youth programs like the First Tee or golf education programs like Golf Para Todos. Together with OHL and the Mayakoba Golf Classic, we created Golf PARa Todos which is a community outreach program, to grow the game of golf by encouraging active participation in the game as a participant and as a fan. In January of 2011, Golf PARa Todos earned a place in the Guinness World Records by hosting the world's largest golf lesson ever. 1,073 people participated in the lesson. I read an article recently that went even one step further with a plan to grow the game. The author suggested that if you want to grow the game of golf, you should let children play for free. While the author claimed it was a radical solution, it sounds like a good one to me. The more golfers we can create the more economically sustainable our golf courses become.

Monty Backs Golf Development in Turkey Former Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie has returned to his signature designed golf course at the Maxx Royal Resort in Belek, Turkey, to discuss the country’s golf development with business leaders and politicians. Monty, who is a popular figurehead for golf in Turkey, was also in the country to look at potential development opportunities with his golf course design partner European Golf Design (EGD). His visit follows the recent announcement of a new matchplay event in October, supported by Turkish Airlines, featuring Tiger Woods and other top players, which is to be played at another of EGD’s courses in the region, the Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club, where the country’s first prospective European Tour Event, the Turkish Open could take place in 2013. With golf returning to the Olympics in the Rio 2016 Games, it is hoped that a committed approach to the sport’s development from grass roots through to elite level will also pay dividends in Istanbul’s bid to host the Games in 2020. Colin Montgomerie said: “The opportunity for golf to develop in Turkey is phenomenal. I am hugely impressed with the measures instigated by the Turkish Golf Federation and the government to develop golf for tourism and local play. “Revisiting The Montgomerie Maxx Royal, which is in outstanding condition, and looking at other opportunities to develop golf courses throughout Turkey, this is a country the golfing world needs to watch closely.” Boasting 14 golf courses, Turkey’s Mediterranean coast has already established itself as an award-winning international golf tourism hotspot, hosting the International Golf Travel Market in 2011, and has ambitious plans for more golf resorts. What is a Links Course? We have recently had many enquiries as to what constitutes a Links Course as it seems that the name is being attached to many courses that do not really meet with the correct criteria. As such, here is the best explanation that we could find.

A

links is the oldest style of golf course, first developed in Scotland. The word "links" comes via the Scottish language from the old English word hlinc: "rising ground, ridge “and refers to an area of coastal sand dunes and sometimes to open parkland. It also retains this more general meaning in the Scottish English dialect. It can be treated as singular even though it has an "s" at the end and occurs in place names that precede the development of golf, for example Lundin Links Fife. Links courses remain most widespread in Ireland and also in Great Britain especially in Scotland. The Open is always played on links courses, and this is one of the main features which differentiate it from the three Major Championships held in the United States. In the United States especially, the term "links" is frequently misapplied. "Links" refers to a very specific type of golf course. But nowadays it is common for any golf course that is relatively treeless to call itself a links course. And that's not correct. Many golfers have never seen a true links course except for the ones they see each year while watching the Open. The British Golf Museum says that "links" are coastal strips of land between the beaches and the inland agricultural areas. This term, in its purest sense, applies specifically to seaside areas in Scotland. For back in the mists of Scotland, someone had the bright idea to start knocking a ball around that land, hitting it from point to point. And from those modest beginnings, links golf courses emerged. Because they were close to the beach, lots of sand bunkers were natural (after all, the soil was very sandy). 46

SPECIAL FEATURE

But such bunkers had to be deeply recessed to prevent sand from being blown away by the continuous wind. Because the soil was of a poor quality and constantly buffeted by the seaside winds, not much would grow on it - mostly just tall, reedy grasses, and definitely no trees. So "links land" is land where seaside transitions into farmland. Links land has sandy soil, making it unsuited for crops. Such land was often, in times past, thought to be worthless because it was not arable for crops. This reflects both the nature of the scenery where the sport happened to originate, and the fact that only limited resources were available to golf course architects at the time, and any earth moving had to be done by hand, so it was kept to a minimum. Even today, some links courses do not employ a greens staff, use only basic machinery such as hole cutters without boards to ensure that the hole is cut unevenly, and use grazing animals to keep the grass cropped. So a true links course is not any course that is treeless. The term "links" historically applies specifically to strips of land in seaside areas that feature sandy soil, dunes and undulating topography, and where the land is not conducive to cultivated vegetation or trees. Because they were built on narrow strips of land, links courses often followed an "out and back" or "out and in" routing. The front nine went out from the clubhouse, one hole stringed after another, until reaching the 9th green, which was the point on the golf course farthest from the clubhouse. The golfers would then turn around on the 10th tee, with the back nine holes leading straight back to the clubhouse. This affects the style of play required, favouring players who are able to play low accurate shots due to the wind. In modern terms, a "links course" is more broadly defined to include golf courses built on sandy soil and that are buffeted by winds. A links course must play firm and fast, with sometimes crusty fairways and greens that feature many knolls and knobs to create odd bounces and angles. And, of course, a links course needs to be relatively treeless with a native rough that is tall and thick.

Mossel Bay’s spring is here – it’s one of the four best seasons for visiting the Garden Route’s favourite harbour town – and both the sea and the golf courses are sparkling and ready to welcome you. “The course is in fantastic condition,” said Carl van der Linde, the CEO of the Pinnacle Point Homeowners’ Association, which owns the Pinnacle Point golf course.

“Mossel Bay is the ideal golfing destination for families because it offers an unusually wide selection of attractions and activities,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm.

“We spent a lot of time over the winter renovating various areas of the course – including large parts of the rough, which were re-seeded – and the good rains have set the new planting in beautifully.”

“This means that if anyone in the family isn’t a golfer, there’s plenty for them to do while the players are out on the course.”

He said that bookings for the December to February period “are streaming in. “If you want to play Pinnacle Point over the summer, I’d advise you to book now – because you may be disappointed of you leave it too late.” Louw Strydom, the manager of the Mossel Bay Golf Club, said that his Club’s course is also in above-average condition. “We followed our usual programme of maintenance through the winter, and this gave the course a chance to bed in after all the work we did last year – and the results have been spectacular.” He, too, said that summertime bookings are gathering momentum. “I’d say now is the best time to book if you want to play when you come down for the DecemberJanuary holidays,” he said. 50

Mossel Bay Tourism has recently revised and reprinted its ‘Things to do’ brochure, which is designed to make planning activities in the area as easy as possible. The brochure provides essential information about things like swimming beaches, sports clubs, museums and cultural attractions - and comprehensive descriptions of all the town’s commercial attractions: everything from beauty spas and children’s play centres to shopping malls and restaurants, and from whale watching tours and lion walks to shark cage diving and scuba instruction. “The ‘Things to do’ brochures are available from Mossel Bay Tourism, and you can also download it from our web site – www.visitmosselbay.co.za,” said Ms. Holm. Golfbidder partners with the European Golf Course Owners Association The European Golf Course Owners Association has today announced their partnership with Golfbidder, Europe’s largest buyer and seller of used golf clubs. The thriving online club exchange has signed an agreement to be partners of the EGCOA for the next two years. Based in South-West London, Golfbidder began life in 1997 as Mashie Niblicks, a shop which specialised in buying and selling used golf clubs. The success of ‘Mashie’ encouraged the concept to expand online - and as a result Golfbidder, the busiest preowned golf retailer in Europe, was born. “We are delighted to welcome Golfbidder to the EGCOA community” says Lodewijk Klootwijk, EGCOA director “This unique service adds great value and advantages for golfers and pro shops alike, allowing them the opportunity to liquidate used clubs and unsold new stock. I would encourage any golf facility to visit www.golfbiddertrade.com to see the benefits of this powerful online resource.” One of the key benefits of Golfbidder is that it allows pro shops the option to accept used clubs in partexchange for new clubs, golf lessons or other products. An integral factor in the firm’s success has been its rigorous counterfeit screening processes that includes a team of PGA professionals employed to check the authenticity of all traded clubs. Golfbidder’s commitment to the industry has been recognised by the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland, along with the PGAs of Europe. September/October 2012

Sunshine Tour announces Tshwane Open The Sunshine Tour announced a record-breaking sixth tournament co-sanctioned by the European Tour with the Tshwane Open to be played from 28 February to 3 March in 2013. The â‚Ź1.5-million event will be the richest on the Sunshine Tour, which means the winner will earn a two-year exemption on the European Tour, and it will be played at The Els Club Copperleaf. The City of Tshwane will use learnings from other cities that have hosted similar events to ensure that it implements world-class practices in staging a prestigious golf tournament. "We intend replicating international models in order to optimise our return on investment out of the event and achieve a higher yield on the socio-economic impact for the city," said city manager Jason Ngobeni.

The Tshwane Open joins the South African Open Championship, the Nelson Mandela Championship, the Alfred Dunhill Championship, the Africa Open and the Joburg Open as European Tour co-sanctioned event on the Sunshine Tour, making South Africa the country with the most European Tour events on the schedule. The event means the Sunshine Tour's summer schedule for 2012-2013 will be more exciting than ever as the co-sanctioned events like the Tshwane Open will attract some of the best players in the world. Sunshine Tour executive director Selwyn Nathan expressed his satisfaction with the addition to the schedule. "I'm particularly excited that we have another European Tour co-sanctioned event, as it shows the confidence one of the two major tours in the world has in us," he said.

Where do you currently live in South Africa? Nahoon Mouth, East London. 3. Did you come from a surfing background? No, not really, my uncle surfed a bit but it was my friends at school that got me hooked. 4. At what age did you start surfing? 11 or 12 5. Was it always surfing or did you have other sporting interests? I did as many sports as I could at Primary school, cricket, rugby, soccer, swimming, biathlon, squash and tennis. In Std 7 I won the S.A. Championships for the under 14 boys and, that was that for most of the other sports I was doing! 6. I believe East London has got one of the best surfing spots in the country, is that true? Yes, Nahoon Reef is world renowned, there are also so many other really good surf spots in East 60

London. We are fortunate that Nahoon Reef is not as popular as Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay because it doesn’t get as crowded. 7. How does it compare to Jeffrey’s Bay? J Bay is a very long and perfect wave, Nahoon Reef is a lot shorter but has an amazing amount of power. 8. You were attacked by a shark in 2004, tell us more about it? It is impossible to forget, I was in J Bay with my wife, Sue, for our 10th wedding anniversary. I went for an early morning surf and as I kicked out of a wave I landed on the shark. It bit my right foot and pulled me under water, it was scary as I didn’t know how big it was or how long it was going to hold me under water for. I kicked it with my left leg and it let me go. 9. Isn’t it odd for a ragged tooth shark to attack? The Raggie didn’t really attack me, I landed on it and it would have got a fright and because it does have any other way of defending itself, it used its teeth. 10. Have you had any other encounters with sharks? A couple other scares but nothing too serious.

HISTORY OF THE VODACOM ORIGINS OF GOLF TOUR Having identified a gap in the Sunshine Tour back in 2004, former head of SAIL Selwyn Nathan explored the possibilities of introducing a unique tournament on the South African golf scene, a tournament that would combine networking opportunities with amateur and professional golfers at world-class courses across the country. The team then brainstormed ideas and concepts before tying up sponsors, most notably mobile giant Vodacom as the title sponsor, thus giving rise to what has and still is today the most prestigious golf tournament on the South African calendar. Determined to fill the gap in the Sunshine Tour calendar, the team conceptualized the six-tournament series to be played at various locations across the country and in 2004, the inaugural Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour was launched.

Regarded as the single biggest and longest standing series on the Sunshine Tour, the Vodacom Origins is by invite only and offers unique opportunities for amateurs to experience life as a professional. Each year the courses are selected based on the theme for that year's Series, which pay tribute to current and former South African golfing greats. In 2010, the series honoured Ernie Els, with some of the host courses linking back to the former world number one. One such venue was Copperleaf, designed by Els on land once owned by his grandfather, while another venue was the Western Cape's Oubaai Golf Course, Els's first signature course in SA. The 2012 edition has been dubbed the Goose Chase in honour of the accolades and achieve62

ments of two-time US Open champion, Retief Goosen. The second event in this year's series took place at Zebula Country Club in Limpopo, a place that holds fond memories for Goosen, who has a home there. And, the 2012 Vodacom Origins of Golf finale will take place at The Links in Fancourt, George, a course that the 14-time European Tour winner is particularly fond of which is why he bought a wine farm not too far away from The Links. The most successful golfer in the series is Jean Hugo with seven wins throughout the Vodacom Origins of Golf's nine-year history, followed by the trio of Darren Fichardt, Brandon Pieters and Thomas Aiken on three wins apiece.

"My first win in the series was at Arabella in 2006 and everything just seemed to play into my hands as I won the tournament by five strokes. That was a special moment, but perhaps eclipsed by the 2010 event at Gardener Ross when I beat Charl Schwartzel by one shot with a course record of 62. Then in 2011 I clinched a record three wins in one season and was treated to a memorable prizegiving ceremony at the top of the mountain at the Extreme 19th hole at the Legends Resort," says Hugo. Now in its ninth year, Abt believes that the 2012 finale will be the most memorable to date. "After the pros tee off on the last day at The Links, Retief Goosen and the top amateur will play The Links course. Getting the opportunity to play with Retief definitely rates as the most magnificent prize we've ever offered and I'm pretty certain that the amateurs will give it their all to take full advantage of this unique opportunity." The Vodacom Origins of Golf series is widely credited with providing a good platform to develop and nurture South African talent for international success as it allows young professionals to participate on home soil in a competitive environment that teaches them all the necessary skills before embarking on that big step up to the major tours. The 2011 Open de Espana champion Thomas Aiken dominated in the inaugural series in 2004 winning three of the six events including the final. But he lost out in the penultimate event that year to Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 Open Championship winner and 2012 Masters runner-up. Each year, SAIL has set the bar even higher and has had numerous highlights varying in degrees of fun, heart-warming moments and zany challenges which involved celebrity guests such as Gavin Hunt, Josta Dladla, Daine Klate, Katlego Mashego, Rowen Fernandez, Breyton Paulse, Allan Donald, Mark Fish, Mark Boucher, Fudge Mabeta, Frik Kirsten, Jacques Kallis and Lionel Cronje to name just a few. Celebrities are usually teamed up with professional golfers and go headto-head in a series of challenges aimed at raising as much money as possible for the Birdies for Kiddies Campaign. Launched in 2008, the Birdies for September/October 2012

Kiddies Campaign has been the most successful of Vodacom's two other initiatives, namely Goals for Miracles and Tries for Smiles, and has raised close to R10 million to date. Vodacom has donated R500 for every birdie scored at each of its events since 2008 and this year, they will be donating packaged meals to five charities namely African Children's Feeding Scheme (ACFS), NOAH, Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA), New Beginningz and Ndlovu Care Group. "We wanted to give back those in need and this initiative is one that we're extremely proud of considering it is the only one still running and has been the most successful of Vodacom's three campaigns. This is a huge incentive for the amateurs, pros and invited guests to make a difference simply by playing his or her best round of golf possible and scoring as many birdies as possible in the process," said Abt. Jacques Blaauw turned professional in 2008 and describes his experiences on the series since then as surreal. "We participate at the most picturesque and pristine golf courses in the country, it really is a dream come true. My most memorable Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament was at Simola last year because I was teamed up with Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis. I usually watch them on television and here I was playing golf with them and having loads of fun at the same time, it was such an amazing experience. I don't think too many other sports offers the ordinary businessman or amateur the opportunity to play competitively with professional golfers and that in my opinion is what makes the Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour such a success." Abt concludes, "SAIL offers a turnkey solution, carrying this project through from the start to date which ranged from conceptualization, implementation and monitoring, to management and reporting back to Vodacom on a regular basis. As the rights owner, it is in SAIL's best interests to ensure that this tournament is as big a success as it can be and that it grows annually."

GAUTENG NORTH MAKES A CLEAN SWEEP OF BOTH IPT DIVISIONS 80 of South Africa’s top women amateur golfers have descended upon the Woodmead course at Country Club Johannesburg to represent their provinces in the 2012 Pick n Pay SA Women’s Inter-Provincial. The results of the first day’s foursomes and singles stroke play dictates in which section of each Division (A Inter Provincial and B Inter Provincial) the teams will compete for the match play. A cloudy, calm day greeted the players at CCJ, where the course is in its usual immaculate winter condition. The A Division foursomes results, with two out of three scores counting, provided some excitement on the live scoring when Boland overtook their rival neighbours, Western Province who had been leading for a number of holes. Boland held the lead until the 14th, but were unable to keep the momentum going, and Gauteng North and Ekurhuleni over took them. Gauteng North A’s foursome pairings of Kim Williams and Magda Kruger (72) and Nobuhle Dlamini and Carrie Park (75) put them in an early lead with a total of 147, with Ekurhuleni on 154. The wind picked up later in the day when the afternoon singles started. Kim Williams and Bonita Bredenhann teed off in the same group, and when both of them birdied the 1st hole, it looked more like match play than stroke play. Kim’s 5 birdies and 1 drop on the front nine, to Bonita’s 2 birdies, 1 eagle and 1 drop, put Kim in the lead by one at the turn. A see-saw battle ensued between these two top players, with Bonita emerging the winner of the battle on 4 under par (68). Kim posted a 69. Gauteng North A won the Jean Tindall Memorial Trophy, and Gauteng North B won the Nolan Karp Trophy for the foursomes and singles stroke play qualifying rounds. Bonita’s Benoni blitz earns her Sanlam SA Match Play title Namibia’s Bonita Bredenhann overcame the disappointment of a near miss two years ago and won the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Match Play Championship at Benoni CC in July. Bredenhann beat KZN’s Michaela Fletcher 3/2 in the final, producing some magnificent golf. “It’s awesome. I’ve been waiting so long for my chance and now I’ve done it,” said Bredenhann, who was just too strong for Fletcher. The victory is the culmination of two years of intense work by Bredenhann to strengthen her game and work on the mental side of it. In 2010, she made it through to the final but was beaten 6/4 by South African number one Kim Williams. “That was a big disappointment for me. But at that stage I just wasn’t strong enough. I’ve been working really hard on my game. I’ve been working with a sports psychologist to help me keep focused, and it all clicked this week.” Bredenhann had beaten reigning SA Stroke Play champion Nobuhle Dlamini to reach the semi-finals. Then she overpowered Bianca Theron with an 8/7 victory to make the final. September/October 2012

KIDS STUFF

• She was born on December 22, 1951, in Sydney, Australia. • One of the top players in women's golf in the 1970s and 1980s. She brought glamour to the game, but some believed her emphasis on sex appeal overshadowed her golf. • Her first LPGA victory was the 1976 Sarah Coventry Naples Classic. Her most productive period was the early 1980s, when she won all of her majors in consecutive years: 1981 du Maurier, the 1982 LPGA Championship and the 1983 U.S. Women's Open. • She recorded eight holes-in-one in LPGA competition, the second-most in Tour history. • She continued playing LPGA events throughout the '90s, but was hampered by an injury incurred during a mugging in Miami in 1990. • She went on to win on the Women's Senior Golf Tour, a tour she helped found. • In 2003, she became the first woman to play on the Champions Tour, she missed the cut. • In 2011, she was a contestant on the Australian TV version of Dancing with the Stars. • She is generally considered the first female touring professional to get into the golf course design business. • Her many charitable efforts include being an honorary chairman of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Augusta National Golf Club admits first female members In what Augusta National Golf Club is describing as ‘a joyous occasion’, Augusta National and Masters Tournament chairman Billy Payne has announced that Condoleezza Rice, the former U.S. defence secretary, and Darla Moore, the banking executive, have accepted invitations to become the first two female members in the Club’s 80 year history. “We are fortunate to consider many qualified candidates for membership at Augusta National. Consideration with regard to any candidate is deliberate, held in strict confidence and always takes place over an extended period of time. The process for Condoleezza and Darla was no different,” said Mr Payne. “These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership. It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. “This is a significant and positive time in our club’s history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family.” Condoleezza Rice, 57, the former U.S. Secretary of State under the George W. Bush administration, lives in Stanford, California and in a statement said: “I am delighted and honoured to be a member of 72

Augusta National Golf Club. I have visited Augusta National on several occasions and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new ones through this very special opportunity. “I have long admired the important role Augusta National has played in the traditions and history of golf. I also have an immense respect for the Masters Tournament and its commitment to grow the game of golf, particularly with youth, here in the United States and throughout the world. “Golf is a wonderful source of enjoyment for me, and I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to grow my love for this great game.” Darla Moore, 58, is a businesswoman from Lake City, South Carolina. She is the vice president of Rainwater Inc. and the University of South Carolina’s business school is named in her honour. She said in a statement: “I am honoured to have accepted an invitation to join Augusta National Golf Club. Augusta National has always captured my imagination, and is one of the most magically beautiful places anywhere in the world, as everyone gets to see during the Masters each April. “I am fortunate to have many friends who are members at Augusta National, so to be asked to join them as a member represents a very happy and important occasion in my life. Above all, Augusta National and the Masters Tournament have always stood for excellence, and that is what is so important to me. I am extremely grateful for this privilege.” September/October 2012

NEWS CLIP

Proteas urges golfers to get behind Sanlam Cancer Challenge South Africa’s national netball team have thrown their overwhelming support behind the Sanlam Cancer Challenge golf tournament, urging the country’s golfers to get behind the country’s biggest charitable sporting event.“On the court, we recently celebrated a great run in the Diamond Challenge against Malawi, Botswana and Zimbabwe, but off the court, our success was clouded by the fact that several members of the Spar Proteas side has been dealing with the affects of cancer,” explained national coach Elize Kotze.“At least 150 people are diagnosed with cancer every hour and when cancer hits this close to home, you really become aware of the work others are doing in this area. That’s why we as a team truly appreciate the mammoth task Sanlam has undertaken with the Sanlam Cancer Challenge.”

Kotze explained that, in addition to herself, cancer has also affected three other members of the squad. “Two of my closest friends are currently undergoing aggressive treatment for cancer,” she said. “Our team manager Claudine Claassen is in remission with breast cancer, while our team doctor, Koba van der Walt, is being treated for leukaemia. Chrisna Botha, our chief goal shooter, has recently learned that her father has been diagnosed with cancer. “The Spar Proteas unit is like a small family and we all feel the effects of what our friends and family are dealing with. Cancer is hitting closer and closer to home and that’s why we think Sanlam is doing a fantastic job with the Sanlam Cancer Challenge to raise funds for research and the prevention of cancer and creating awareness of this global disease.” “As non-golfers, we have not paid much attention in the past, but now, with several of us directly affected, we can truly recognise the Sanlam Cancer Challenge as an amazing project. We want to challenge every golfer in South Africa to play the sport they love while they support the Challenge and raise funds on a national scale to fight this global disease.” Hundreds of golfers participated in the nationwide club competitions from March to July to qualify for the Regional Finals from August to September. The 2012 Sanlam Cancer Challenge will culminate in the National Finals at Sun City, and which is played on both the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Club courses in October. 74

LAUGH OUT LOUD SPECIAL FEATURE

The A to Z of Golf: I, J, K IIIII Identifying the Ball: Except in a hazard, players may, without incurring a penalty, lift a ball they think is theirs and clean it for purposes of identification. After doing so, they must put it back in exactly the same spot from which they took it. However, most golfers are aware that in the few seconds needed to complete this manoeuvre, the earth itself has moved in a number of directions, both because of its own rotation and due to the movements it shares with the solar system and the galaxy, and they compensate for these motions by shifting the position of the ball from, say, the muddy divot hole from which it was removed to a point a few trillionths of an Astronomical Unit away (about a foot) occupied by a nice tuft of grass.
