PGA NEWS 2012 PGA Programme begins A new year is upon us and with it a whole new intake of apprentices and students start the PGA programme.

The course includes subjects such as Golf Coaching, Business Finance and Retailing, Sports Science and Equipment Technology.

As an apprentice you need to play to a 5 handicap or better, work under a qualified PGA member, study a distance learning programme and pass playing and practical exams. Doing it this way means that you join the PGA and forfeit your amateur status.

If you fit the bill and see yourself making a career out of being a golf professional contact Andrew Gunn or Janine Muller at the PGA on 011 485 1370.

Or you can join one of the PGA’s approved education providers and study the academic programme full time as an amateur and then should you wish to join the PGA, you do practical time as an apprentice. Right: PGA graduate Jarrod Cole-Edwards with CEO of the PGA Ivano Ficalbi and Titleist’s Beau Barnard who sponsored the academic achievement award.

SA represented at PGAs of Europe Conference PGA of SA was represented at the 2011 PGAs of Europe Conference by Education and Training Manager Andrew Gunn (pictured right). Presentations during the week included a fascinating question and answer session with Michael Bannon, Rory McIlroy’s coach, a synopsis of the state of golf in the USA and the PGA of America’s 2.0 programme to address this, Golf at the Olympics, The development role of the R+A, the pro as the club’s Rainmaker, The Education of the pro, The role of the PGA, Leveraging off Golf Tournaments, The European Tour Performance Institute, Environmentally sustainable Golf and many more. The annual awards dinner reflected PGAs E’s status as custodian of the heritage of European Professional Golf. Michael Bannon won the John Jacobs award as coach of the year, George O Grady for his role as CEO of the European Tour in furthering the Tour and a very emotional posthumous award to Seve Ballesteros for his contribution to golf. For more info on the week see the archive section of the PGAs of Europe website http://www.pgae.com/pages/view/archive-news.

WINNING LETTER Dear Editor I want to know if I am the only one but I say lets start a pressure group to ask those concerned with golf to consider the following; Golf is a noun, not a verb. One plays golf -- one does not golf. One plays golf on a golf course, not a track. Runners and race cars do what they do on a track. And please, scribes and commentators, it is Leopard Creek – not Leopard, Pinnacle Point – not Pinnacle just like it is Pebble Beach -- not Pebble. Well I feel better now!! On another note I would like to know if you think Tiger Woods “is back”. As I write this, Mr. Woods has just won the Chevron World Challenge and

the press seems to be going bananas! I am not so sure that this victory means that Tiger Woods will go marching back to his number one in the world position. I feel that he still has a long way to go. I am sure the press is hoping like mad that he is back as when he is playing well their ratings are so much better. Thank you for an entertaining magazine that I read religiously. Yours truly Murray Jones

Dear Murray You make a good point as this so often happens; my pet hate is when a cricketer says “he really stepped up to the plate”. To my knowledge stepping up to the plate applies to baseball! There are many instances of this and I think that sportsmen should be made aware of this, so YES we will join your movement. Send me the forms! Is Tiger back? Well, he went back to number 21 in the world but just how much does a win at the Chevron really mean? This was an end of season event with a limited field; Woods on the other hand was well rested and really keen to snatch a win which he did by one shot against Zach Johnson. Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Rory Mcllroy were not there. Let’s see him win in Abu Dhabi at the end of January and then start counting our chickens! Regards

Congratulations to Murray - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! January/February 2012

De Smidt wins Q-School, 36 Sunshine Tour Cards received

Ruan de Smidt finished first, but all 36 players who received Sunshine Tour cards at the close of Qualifying School last month felt like winners. “I was hitting it well the whole week, and winning Tour School is really something for me – it means I can compete with the top guys,” said De Smidt. Bloemfontein Golf Club hosted the 68-man finale of a 90-hole endeavour, undertaken by 252 players looking to make their mark in 2012, but only 36 went on to claim Tour cards. De Smidt was a cool customer and carded 67 to close the tournament at 16-under-par, four strokes clear of runners-up Danie van Tonder and Wesley Worster. On the final day De Smidt took the game to his competitors, making an eagle at the 15th and carding four birdies during his five-under-par final round. “That eagle was really the moment of my round. I hit driver and then eight-iron to 10 foot and when I sank that putt it was amazing,” he said. The front stretch was calm for the 22-year-old – he made birdies at the first and fifth, slowly building up his rhythm before turning at one-under for the day. The last nine of 90 holes of golf would see the Krugersdorp Golf Club professional close in style – he penciled in no drops on the back stretch and calmly pulled away from the field. 10

Kyle Scott, Chris Erasmus, Drikus van der Walt, Daniel Hammond, Graham van der Merwe, Francois Coetzee, Thomas Lovett, Juan Langeveld and Francois Haughton respectively made up the remainder of the top 10, all of whom took a cut of the R70,000 prize fund. But prize money was not the objective – earning a Tour card was – Riekus Nortje, Steve Surry, Andre van Zyl, Jacque Etienne van Tonder, Gary Birch, Lean Boezaart, Beyers Smith, Johann Mostert, Willie Steyn, Brendan de Lange, Kevin Stinson, Wendell Bossenger, Pieter Moolman, Michael Hollick, Steven van Heerden, David Ryan, Greg Petzer, Aron Zemmer, Coenie Bester, Teboho Sefatsa, Francois van Vuuren, Nathan Waghorn, Jared Harvey and Martin Du Toit all earned the right to compete next year by finishing within the top 30 and ties. Amateur Jared Harvey managed to squeeze into the 2012 Tour - he carded 69 on the final day, closed at level-par and snatched his card. “The nerves and the confidence took a knock when I shot 77 for round one, but I managed to finish birdie, birdie today and sneak in. I have my sights on pro golf and my confidence would have been shattered had it not been my week,” he said. For De Smidt it was a long road, but after a grueling trial he proved his mettle and will surely look for Rookie of the Year glory in 2012.

Pace cements place among elite in Europe Lee-Anne Pace followed up her breakthrough order of merit winning season on the Ladies European tour in 2010, with another impressive year with a second place finish in the Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club last month. Pace's total of 11 under par 277 with a closing round of 69 was enough for sole possession of second place, four strokes behind American teenager, Alexis Thompson, in the final event of the season. Fellow South African Stacy Lee Bregman was a further two shots behind in a share of fourth on nine under for the week. It brings to an end another solid season for Pace as she managed nine top 10s, and heading into the Dubai event was sixth on the order of merit.

A top five would get Pace into the Ladies US Open in 2012

Speaking at the Gary Player Invitational in November, Pace said she was satisfied with her consistent season despite not notching up any further wins to add to her five from last season. "I'm hitting the ball better than last year. I'm hitting six percent more greens and seven percent more fairways plus I've gained 10 metres on my drives," said Pace. I've done everything I've wanted to do golfing wise, the putts just haven't dropped enough and literally sometimes one shot has been how close I've been to winning." With a number of close finishes Pace said the Open de Espana where she finished second was one event she would have liked to win the most. "I should've won that one, but the greens were kind of funky, some were fast some were slow," she said. "Unfortunately I three putted the last hole but I should've won it earlier in the day. January/February 2012

"But maybe just a bit of luck and things would be different, but that's golf." With her earnings at the final event, Pace might move inside the top five on the moneylist which was one of her goals heading towards the end of the season. "My goal for the moneylist is top five, a top ten or top five in Dubai should get me a top five and that gets me into the US Open next year." Looking ahead to next year, Pace said she will continue working at her game with little time off. "I'm working quite hard, and also in the off season I'll be working quite hard," Pace said. "I'll probably only take about two weeks off over Christmas and spend some time with my family. The first Australian event [next year] is now a combined LPGA event which is I think is a $1,2 million event."

Stone wins Freddie Tait trophy

Pretoria amateur Brandon Stone ended a remarkable year by winning the Freddie Tait trophy for finishing as the leading amateur in the South African Open at the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate last month. Stone posted a final round of 73 to finish the week on three under par. Jared Harvey, the only other amateur to make the halfway cut, finished at two over par with a final round of 77. “This has capped a fantastic year for me,” said 18year-old Stone. “I’ve won five times this year and played internationally. My grandfather and my parents walked with me during the final round. The support I’ve had this week has been unbelievable.” Stone only finished writing his matric exams the day before the first round, leaving him little time to prepare for the South African Open. “I knew it was going to be difficult. I wrote my last Afrikaans exam on the Wednesday morning before the tournament started and went straight to Serengeti in the afternoon to practice. And I just made up my mind to go out there and enjoy it this week.” A tricky final round played in a stiff breeze and with the Serengeti greens firming up also tested his resolve. 14

“It was unbelievable out there today. The greens were getting so firm with this wind. I knew today was going to be tough. But you don’t win titles like this easy. I just took a couple of breaths and said to myself, ‘You’ve got to get through this because you can’t just give it to Jared. You’ve got to fight for it’. But my 73 felt like a 65.” Stone will be focusing on his golf for the next nine months before he takes up a golf scholarship at the University of Texas. “I wanted to get into that American system. You see players like Luke Donald, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler – all of them came through that. It put them at that extra level. I want that level of competitiveness where you are pushed to improve.” Stone is also in no hurry to turn professional just yet. “It depends on how it goes in the States. It depends on how I develop and improve while at College.”

omatipoort golf course is unique in every way. First in how it came to be?? A group of dedicated farmers came together as a community and begun clearing the site in 1997. Course designer Douw van der Merwe added his expertise to the layout and slowly this beautiful course set at the confluence of the Komati and Crocodile Rivers took shape. It was literally a case of your bull dozer today, my tractor tomorrow; anyone got cement, sand or perhaps you can lend a hand on the weekend? You can understand how and why this course is a success with such a great community effort with pride and love for the game of golf. It didn’t happen overnight and the grass was planted in 2001, shortly thereafter the course opened for play. The Golf course "Kambaku" named after the great tusker from the adjacent Kruger National Park. The word KAMBAKU translated from Shangaan means "Exceptionally Big Elephant Bull". Kambaku was one of the magnificent seven great tuskers of the Kruger National Park. He was an imposing animal fully deserving of the title bestowed upon him. The length, the curve and the weight of his ivory were impressive. His left tusk 259,5cm, weighing 63 kg his right tusk 265cm weighing 64kg. Kambaku had unique features and his tusks where almost identical, he had no "paint –brush" on the tip of his tail, he had three horizontal creases or folds at the base of his trunk and a perfectly round hole in his left ear. These features made Kambaku recognisable from a distance. During the dry season Kambaku spent most of his time along the banks of the Crocodile River which today forms part of the Kambaku golf course border. With its dramatic river frontage Kambaku golf course is the ideal golfing destination. To all those avid golfers and non-golfers alike, you must play Kambaku. Elephant, buffalo and hippopotamus are often seen in the river during the course of play. If you keen on birds bring the binoculars with, birdlife is prolific and the resident woodlands kingfisher, fish eagle, white fronted bee-eaters to mention a few make bird watching wonderful.

M

any South Africans (and at Christmas and Easter it is many, many) think of Komatipoort as little more than a gateway to Mozambique. However, it offers much more than transit to sun, sand, surf and seafood. An historic railway settlement since the 1890’s, the town is called after the Komati River: a siSwati name that with great economy of words indicates river of cows or hippopotami. Nestled in the corner where the Komati and Crocodile rivers meet is Kambaku Golf Club. Tuskers and lesser Lowveld fauna can frequently be admired whilst playing at Kambaku, as the Crocodile River, the course’s northerly boundary, is the southern border of the Kruger National Park. The clubhouse, bar and restaurant, overlooking the river, is excellent for an hour or three’s liquid assisted contemplation of what would constitute a decent handicap for an ellie… Should you wish to ask one, an 8km hop out of town takes you to the park’s Crocodile Bridge Gate. The recently raised bridge is open through all weathers and accesses officially the best game viewing in the KNP. A short drive to the south of Komatipoort is the Mananga border with Swaziland. Too often ignored by South Africans as a potential holiday spot, the mountainous kingdom is well on the agenda. It makes Komatipoort a town where three countries and a great national park meet. Near Mananga border is the eerily moving memorial to Samora Machel, whose aeroplane crashed there in 1986. An affecting site, the memorial and visitors’ centre essentially proclaim that past differences between nations can be reconciled. Given the vacation and trade possibilities of its location, there is little surprise that this little Lowveld town is blessed with numerous fine guest houses and some decent eateries. Local cuisine follows a clear Portuguese influence with prawns a speciality. Whilst the centre of town won’t win beauty competitions most visitor accommodation is nestled amongst the pleasing, tree-lined backstreets or with views over the Crocodile or Komati rivers. The latter river is justly famous for the fighting qualities of its tiger fish. Given notice, most local lodges can organise a day out with rod and reel and lend a credulous ear to tales of monsters caught and released. Apart from game viewing, golf, access to Mozambican beaches and Swazi mountains, tiger fishing and Portuguese cuisine, other local attractions include micro-light flights along the Crocodile River, bookable from the local airfield and elephant back safaris from a local game lodge. Four and a half hours from the bustle of Gauteng, Komatipoort is not just a different World, but many worlds in one.

SPECIAL FEATURE – GOLF IN THE WILD

TIGERFISH Tigerfish can be considered Africa's equivalent of the South American piranha, though they belong to a completely different family, as they are famous for their ferocity when hunting. They have razorsharp teeth that are interlocking, along with streamlined, muscular bodies built for speed. Tigerfish are aggressive predators. A tigerfish has a gas-filled sac in its body that it uses as a sound receiver. This transmits vibrations from the water, enabling it to detect any animals nearby and respond accordingly. A school of juveniles can tackle animals of almost any size, including any land animals that stray too close to the water's edge. Adults tend to travel in smaller groups of four or five, but they are no less dangerous. Even an individual can take down prey as large as itself. When food is scarce or the competition for food is too great, tigerfish may resort to cannibalism. This is particularly common in the dry season. Tigerfish have also been known to attack humans, these attacks can be devastating owing to their sharp teeth and aggressive hunting tactics.

Malelane Golf Course is a nine-hole golf course that is located close to the Malelane Gate entry to the Kruger National Park and offers double tees on each hole. The golf course is normally in outstanding condition throughout the year. The course is literally a chip & a putt from the Kruger National Park and has a variety of beautiful indigenous trees. A water stream winds its way through the course and there is a wide variety of bird life to be seen. Vervet monkeys are a common sight; always busy foraging at the fruits and flowers. It is an easy walking course but it does get hot in this region during summer, so take plenty of refreshments with you when you play. While not a championship golf course, it is a fun holiday experience to play Malelane and a welcome break from the Game Viewing. The world renowned and South Africa’s number one golf course Leopard Creek which hosts the Alfred Dunhill Championship is across the road.

Who did you first play provincial rugby for? I first played provincial rugby for Natal U16 Craven week, where I was captain. What made you move to Gauteng? The move to the Lions was a hard decision to make. I had moved up the ranks in the Sharks system and played 19 games for them in Currie cups 2009, 2010 when we won the Currie cup. The Sharks had bought in and already had quality loose forwards in the senior structure and I found myself not getting as much game time as I would have liked. My move was purely based on what would be better for my career. In your opinion what was the magic that enabled the Lions to win the Currie Cup again after such a barren patch? I think we really grew as a team throughout the Super Rugby campaign and endured some tough times which made us a stronger group. We also really put in the hours on the field with the coaches and conditioning staff, which resulted in us being a really fit side. This showed in a number of games where we beat teams in the last quarter of the match and allowed us to play a wide, running game. Just how hard did the boys party after the win? We had a good celebration after the final, and it was good to spend it with the team and family. Let's just say the boys looked a little tired on Monday when we met up again. Sunday fun day!!!! Who were your most difficult opponents this season? There is no such thing as an easy game in the modern day competition, but if I had to pick 32

one it would probably be our super 14 game against the Highlanders. How are the guys feeling about the Super 15? We have grown a lot as a team, with our win in the Currie cup giving us belief and confidence to take into next years Super 15. It is the world’s toughest competition and will never be easy, but we are looking forward to the challenges ahead. Who do you rate as the best flanker that the game has ever seen? There are so many amazing flankers in the world that have had a different influence on the game. I personally feel that Juan Smith is the best blind sider in the modern game even though he has had a few injuries in the past few seasons. Richie Macaw and David Pocock are also exceptional players that I look up to. In three words what would you say about the Springboks loss to Australia in the RWC quar-

terfinals? I was absolutely shocked at the ref in that game!!! I was furious because we were and are so much better than the Aussies, but what can you do when you have to play against the ref as well as 15 other men. David Pocock got away with murder and if he had been dealt with the way that Craig Joubert dealt with him in the semi-final, SA would have gone through to the final. I believe that you are into vintage cars, which ones in particular? I am mostly into 1960s American muscle cars but also love old e- type Jags and Aston Martins. Cars seemed to be a lot more emotional back then when the only goal was to look amazing. I can't wait to get my 65 fastback Mustang in a few months time. Where do you like to go to relax and get away from it all? I love to go back to our farm outside Nelspruit where my folks live. It is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places to be. I like to do a little shooting, ride my motor bikes and have a round of golf at Leopard Creek. What are your goals for the coming years? My goals for 2012 are for the Lions to be a real threat in the Super Rugby competition and personally to put my hand up by playing great rugby every time I step onto the field. I would just like to add value to my team’s efforts in becoming successful. If through all this I could gain selection for the Bokke, it would be a dream come true!!!

play quite frequently as our farm is 5min away. It's a very beautiful course with some amazing holes. Your preferred club is? Royal Johannesburg and Kensington. Do you walk or take a cart? It sounds a little lazy but I always take a cart. We only get to play on our days off from training and our legs are normally pretty tired after the weeks work. It also helps to speed our game up when you hitting as many shots as I am ha ha!! Your favourite golfer is? I enjoy watching Rory McElroy, Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer. All very young, exciting players. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? No, I have never hit a hole in one before, but I did hit a hole in three at Beachwood in Durban. First tee shot, short into the water then second one bounce and into the hole. Best par I ever made, and I celebrated like it was a hole in one. Do many of the Lions players play golf? We do have a good number of golfers at the Lions but only a hand full of whom can really play competitively. Won't mention any names.... Your ideal fourball would be? My ideal fourball would be Ernie Els, actor Russell Brand and Miguel Angel Jimenez. Think that would be an interesting round of golf and a very interesting 19th hole!!!

GETTING ON TO GOLF When did you start to play golf? I didn't start playing golf from a particularly early age, which you would guess from my handicap. I only started to play frequently after high school in Durban, when we had time off from rugby. What is you current handicap? Ha ha ha!! My current handicap is probably a 20, but to be honest I don't play enough to improve my game at any reasonable pace. I'm more of a social golfer!! Where do you play out of? I’m currently a member at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington, Rand Park Country Club and Johannesburg Country Club. I mostly play out of Royal though. Which is your favourite golf course? My favorite course is Leopard Creek where I fortunately get to January/February 2012

The next three editions of the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, will return to Jumeirah Golf Estates, host venue since the inaugural Race to Dubai in 2009, with the prize fund increasing by US$500,000 to a total of $8 million, and the winner’s cheque rising from $1.25 million to $1.33 million.

Exclusive Interview with Ernie Els

Ernie Els talks about golf course design, from where it all began, current projects around the globe and looking towards the future.

What inspired you to start your golf course design business? Just after I’d won my second US Open in 1997 at Congressional the developers of Whiskey Creek in Maryland approached me to co-design its course in partnership with architect J. Michael Poellet. From that moment onwards, I knew I wanted to design more golf courses. Initially I joined forces with the Jack Nicklaus Design Group. It was a good move from a professional standpoint and I was grateful for the opportunity. Our business quickly blossomed, though, and we evolved from that initial joint venture into a standalone, full service design company. I’ve got a great team of people and I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve in a relatively short period of time. I think most professional golfers love the idea of being able to design great golf courses. For me, it’s not just a business. It’s become a passion. 40

Ernie Els Design has a history of designing great courses on islands – e.g. Hawaii, Mauritius, The Bahamas. Has this become a ‘signature’ for the business? That’s true; we’ve been fortunate to create golf courses in some wonderful locations. As a designer it’s obviously exciting to be able to make the most of what the landscape offers you and incorporate those features into your design. But no, it’s certainly not a signature for the business. We just have plenty of experience now with the challenges and nuances of building on islands! One of the Middle East’s iconic developments is the Els Club in Dubai that opened in 2008. What were the key design and construction challenges that you had to overcome to bring this project to fruition? I made at least six or seven site visits during the construction phase of the Els Club Dubai and fun-

nily enough, one of the main advantages also represents one of the biggest challenges. Sand is easy to move around and for that reason it’s easy to ‘shape’ the golf course. Trouble is, this is the desert and you can put the sand in a place one day…and overnight the wind shifts it to another place! You’re basically fighting against Mother Nature. So we tried to embrace the uniqueness of this environment and incorporate the natural dunes and native plant material into our design, as opposed to creating an artificial feeling oasis in the middle of the desert. I guess you could say we got Mother Nature on board and worked with her, not against her. And actually it helped give the golf course one of its unique qualities, one of its strengths I think. There is a genuine sense that you are playing golf in the desert. The remodeling of the West course at Wentworth received some criticism when it was unveiled for competitive play at last year’s BMW PGA Championship. Why do you think this was? Well, let me start by saying how much I love that golf course. It’s one of my favourites and I have a lot of fond memories from the tournaments I’ve played there, so being given the chance to bring it into the 21st century was a real privilege and in many ways a labour of love. But it hasn’t been straightforward and, as you say, not everyone immediately embraced the changes that we made. I was disappointed by some of the comments from players, but the fact is the greens were old and extremely inefficient in terms of drainage, which caused problems with surface quality and consistency, and many of the original Harry Colt shot values had been lost due to the advances in golf equipment technology. The Club’s owner Richard Caring provided an opportunity to address both of those issues and you have to give him a lot of credit for that. We feel we’ve done a great job renovating and modernizing this Harry Colt classic. It has taken a couple of bites at the cherry to get some aspects of it, such as the 18th green, just as we would want it. But there’s no question in my mind this is a better, more challenging golf course now. It’s a tougher test for the game’s best players, as it should be, and it is also a great members’ course. You now have many associated companies that sit alongside the golf course design business. Do you actively try and marry these into new projects and are there examples where this has been a success? Many of our business activities have grown naturally over the last decade and I think one of our strengths now is that we’re able to create opportunities that help bring more value to our clients. For example, in the golf design business it became clear that developers were looking to us for more than just golf course design services. We now have strong and dynamic offering with the Els Club concept, the Els Performance Academy, Els Residence programs and Big Easy Restaurant. Extending our involvement across various areas in the development has been very well received and I give a lot of credit to my team. I feel fortunate to have on board some of the best talent in the business. Of course, Ernie Els Wines is making a huge mark right now internationally and we’ve expanded the portfolio to include both award winning white and reds. And it goes without saying that our Foundation work both in South Africa and Els for Autism is something that means a lot to my family and team. Of the 11 courses now open for play around the world, is there one you are particularly proud of, and for what reasons? You’d expect me to say every one of our golf courses is special in its own way and that’s genuinely how I feel. But I guess I’ll always have a particular soft spot for Oubaai, which was our first ever design project in South Africa. We’re so proud of that golf course. And Els Club Copperleaf, too. That golf course was built on a piece of land where my grandfather lived, so that makes it extra special for the whole of our family. What are your key projects currently in progress around the world? It’s a good time for Ernie Els Design. In the past 12 months we had the official opening of Albany in the Bahamas, which is a beautiful golf course 42

in a stunning exclusive private community, backed by the Tavistock Group. We currently have 54 holes under construction in Malaysia, which is an exciting deal for us. Greg and I have also just completed our first site visits and finalized the hole routings on a new golf course in Namibia called Desert Star. This is very interesting and actually a totally unique concept, because the company is establishing resorts that not only combine sport, golf and luxury living but also incorporate spectacular onsite film sets to support the Namibian motion picture industry. It’s an exciting project to be a part of. As I say, business is going well and the way things are shaping up it looks like a very healthy situation for us in the next five, 10 years and beyond. How active are you in the design process? Do you have a particular ethos or design style? Right from the start we’ve tried to manage the growth of Ernie Els Design in such a way that allows me to be very much hands-on with all of the projects – by that, I mean have personal input in every stage of the design and planning process and then make regular site visits. It’s the way I always like to do business and I think it’s absolutely the right way to do this business. I think my career as a player and the experiences I’ve gained playing great golf courses all over the world contribute to my vision as a golf course designer. At the end of the day every golf course that we create is special and unique. It’s not just a case of creating a design template and applying it to different locations. And you have to be able to see the bigger picture. In my view you shouldn’t design a golf course for just one type of player. Part of the art of good design is making a course playable for all types of golfer and there are ways you can do that, such as the positioning of the tee complexes, the width of the fairways, and so on. Where are the current growth opportunities?

strong market but are seeing a lot of enquires from Southern American and some emerging Caribbean countries. It’s an exciting time of opportunities in that sense. As I said before, we have a number of new projects in the pipeline and I expect we’ll be able to make announcements soon. What are the main influencing factors helping or inhibiting the growth in this sector of the market? Globally it’s obviously been a challenging two or three years, but the same rules still apply. As with anything in life, in order to be successful you need to have a product that is demanded by the buyer. Some of the older models of golf development are no longer viable. At Ernie Els Design we are finding that every market is different as the cultures are different and they are at different stages in golf development. Can a new golf course still be economically practical? Of course, but you need to cut your cloth accordingly. You are heavily involved in charity work, especially the Els for Autism Foundation. What is the main focus for the charity at present? Our primary focus is a $30 million capital campaign to help create a new Els Center of Excellence in Florida. Thanks to various events, including the Els for Autism Golf Challenge and the Els for Autism Pro Am, we’re well on our way to achieving our financial targets. The Center will be the first of its kind in the world, offering professional and medical resources, and therapy and education for children from the entire autism spectrum to help them lead full adult lives. It will also have a global reach via a digital learning platform. It’s very exciting to think what this Center might be able to achieve. In fact as you are reading this we will have hosted over 500 people at our Grand Finale in Las Vegas capping what has been a tremendous year for our foundation.

Obviously a lot of people are looking towards Asia and China in particular. We also feel this is a January/February 2012

NEWS CLIP

Brandon Grace leads five Sunshine Tour players into Europe It hasn’t been a good year for Branden Grace – until now, as the 23year-old Sunshine Tour youngster led four other South Africans to their European Tour cards in the European Tour’s Final Qualifying Stage at PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain. Grace carded a final-round 73 in a gruelling six-round event to finish 11th at 14-under-par, seven strokes off the pace set by winner David Dixon. The other South Africans to earn the right to play on one of the biggest stages in world golf – players from the European Tour are dominating the game right now – were Warren Abery, Darren Fichardt, Alex Haindl and Tjaart van der Walt. Abery turned a second-successive year of success on the Sunshine Tour into the kind of play which earned him his card: He had seven top-10s in 2011, including victory in the Nedbank Affinity Cup in a great second half of the year. Fichardt was even more successful than Abery on the 2011 Sunshine Tour, with 12 top 10, including victories in the Vodacom Origins of Golf event at the Wild Coast and in the Suncoast Classic. Haindl and Van der Walt both campaigned fairly extensively abroad in 2011 – Haindl on the Challenge Tour and Van der Walt in Asia – but Haindl did find time to post six top-10s in South Africa, while Van der Walt had four. 52

SPECIAL FEATURE – GHOLFBANE: GROEN OASIS OF GROEN WOESTYN

I

SPECIAL FEATURE – GHOLFBANE: GROEN OASIS OF GROEN WOESTYN

Foto 2: Glasvergruiser (“glass crusher”)

’n Werklike wen-wen situasie. Dr. Chris van der Merwe (Ph.D – Dierkunde)

GOLFING DESTINATIONS – GARDEN ROUTE

Discover the beauty of golf in Mossel Bay at Dias Fest 2012 They say the real reason Bartolomeu Dias landed in Mossel Bay on the 3rd of February, 1488, was to buy a new stock of golf balls - he’d been practicing aboard for months and hit his last one into the sea somewhere near Walvis Bay. OK, so they don’t actually say that, but one thing’s for sure: Dias had great taste when it came to location - as you’ll see when you play at Mossel Bay and Pinnacle Point. “These are two of South Africa’s most spectacularly scenic championship courses, and they’ll be teaming up to offer an exciting weekend of golf during the 2012 Dias Festival,” said Festival Organiser, Bertu Nel. He said that the Festival is the town’s celebration of the arrival of Dias (who was the first European to round the Cape, and the first to land on South African soil) - and of the many cultures that make South Africa the country it is today. The Dias Festival will run from the 3rd to the 5th of February, 2012. “Golf will be just one of the attractions on offer because the entire community is getting behind the Festival,” said Mr. Nel. “There’ll be something for every member of the family - from downhill skateboarding to fishing, sky diving, trail running, touch rugby, an urban assault challenge for mountain bikers, a naval gun run, and squash and sailing competitions. There’ll be an air show, a street parade featuring vintage cars and tractors, a number of displays by the police and the NSRI, concerts (including a Mossel

56

Bay’s Got Talent show), and a doggie walk - but most of all, there’ll be golf.” He said that Golf In The Garden Route will be offering a limited number of Festival packages which will include 18 holes at Pinnacle Point on the 4th of February, and 18 holes at Mossel Bay on the 5th - as well as golf cart hire on both days, and an exciting prize-giving ceremony - for just R 799.00 per person. Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that the Festival programme - and special offers on accommodation during the Festival - have been uploaded to www.visitmosselbay.co.za/festivals, and that updates are also posted to the town’s Facebook page - www.facebook.com/visitmosselbay. “Mossel Bay is the Garden Route’s Do Stuff destination because there really is that much to do here - and although we have great weather throughout the year, February is definitely one of our best months. “It’ll be worth bringing the family for a few extra days by the sea,” she said. Donald does it his way – Everywhere! The final event of the European Tour season was won by the man who has been the Tour’s biggest hitter for four of the last five years. But it is England’s Luke Donald, with a driving average of 282 yards which leaves him ranked 145th and some 30 yards behind Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, whose year has been the stuff of dreams. World Number One, leading money winner on the US PGA Tour and now The Race to Dubai champion as well, Donald has shown that brute force is not a pre-requisite for golfing success. Accuracy and a brilliant short game have still to bring the 34 year old a Major title, and that inevitably is the top target for 2012. But they have given him four victories, a stunning 20 top ten finishes in his last 25 events, and an incredible € 9,966,436 in prize money.

The first man to top the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic in the same season. “I think people are taking notice of what I’ve done and how I’ve done it, and maybe people will change the way they approach practice.” Donald prides himself on his work ethic, but also believes he has a great team around him in coach Pat Goss, who has been there since The Ryder Cup star’s University days in Chicago, sports psychologist Dave Alred – the man who helped Jonny Wilkinson become a World Cup winner – and caddie John McLaren. From tournament prize money this year, he has banked a total of € 7,359,552, and he has also earned a €1,499,710 bonus for finishing third in the FedEx Cup in America and a € 1,107,174 bonus for winning The Race to Dubai. His total of € 9,966,436, is more than Tiger Woods has managed in any year, including in 2006 when he won 11 times. 62

Donald finished a cumulative 116 under par on the US PGA Tour and 90 under par on The European Tour – and that does not include the two match play events, one of which he won and the other in which he was runner-up. He won The Race to Dubai despite playing six fewer events than runner-up Rory McIlroy, and he topped the American Money List despite playing seven fewer than runner-up Webb Simpson. It truly was an amazing double. In 2012, Donald wants to give himself the best possible chance going into all four majors. First up is the Masters Tournament at Augusta, where he was fourth this year and third on his debut in 2005. If he can maintain his current levels of performance, it would be no surprise if Donald were to receive the Green Jacket from fellow European Tour champion Charl Schwartzel this April.

New rules of amateur status for 2012 Significant changes include allowing unlimited hole-in-one prizes

First-ever unified, worldwide code for amateur status

S

t Andrews, Scotland: Amateur golfers will be allowed to play for unlimited hole-in-one prizes under revisions to the Rules of Amateur Status announced last month by The R&A. Until now, prizes for holing a tee shot in amateur golf have been subject to the same restrictions as other competitions, including longest drive and nearest the hole. However, a Rule change which acknowledges the special nature of a hole-in-one during a round of golf means that restrictions on the prizes offered have been lifted. The new Rules of Amateur Status, supported by Rolex, also include changes for elite amateur golfers aimed at easing the difficult transition from amateur to professional golfer. It follows a far-reaching four-year review of amateurism in golf, which even questioned the need for a set of rules, and has resulted in the first-ever uniform, worldwide code for Amateur Status. Announcing the changes effective from 1 January 2012, The R&A's Director of Rules and Equipment Standards, David Rickman said: “We felt the time was right to carry out a fundamental review of the Rules of Amateur Status. We were conscious that many sports had done away with amateur status rules and we felt that was an appropriate question for us to ask. “We concluded that it is very important that golf retains its amateur regulations, mainly because of the self-regulating nature of the game, both in terms of the playing rules and handicapping. We felt that uncontrolled financial incentives could place too much pressure on these important features.” A new ruling (Rule 3-2b) excludes hole-in-one prizes from the general prize limit and allows high 66

value prizes, including cash, to be awarded. This exception, which brings The R&A into line with the United States Golf Association (USGA) Rules of Amateur Status, is specific to prizes for holes-in-one achieved while playing a round of golf and neither separate events nor multiple-entry events qualify. Suzann Pettersen, Major winner and R&A - Working for Golf Ambassador, said: “I think this is a really good change. Anyone who makes a hole-in-one knows there is a degree of luck. “Most professional tournaments offer hole-in-one prizes and it adds some real interest for players and fans. It is great to think that club golfers can now experience that same excitement.” Those who will notice the biggest changes to the rules are elite amateurs preparing to make the difficult transition to the professional game. Players will now be able to enter into an agreement with an agent or sponsor as long as they do not receive any financial gain while still an amateur. Rules have also been relaxed on subsistence payments paid through national golf unions. Rickman explained: “The rules on contracts now reflect the modern game and adopt a much more realistic and common sense approach. “Similarly, the rules on subsistence expenses should help the support of deserving talent wherever it may emerge across the golfing world.” Tom Lewis, who recently turned professional after an amateur career that included winning the Silver Medal at this year’s Open Championship as well as being part of the victorious 2011 Walker Cup team, welcomed the changes. He said: “It is an important change because some players are forced into turning pro early just because of financial difficulties.

AMATEUR NEWS

“It will make a real difference as they will now be able to turn professional for all the right reasons and also at the right time for them. It is probably the most important decision they will make in their career. “All the experience I gained as amateur has helped prepare me for life as a professional and I am pleased that I made the decision to play in the Walker Cup before joining the professional ranks.”

The R&A and USGA have historically had different Rules of Amateur Status and while the differences have reduced over the years, until now there had been two separate codes. As part of the fundamental review, the two governing bodies have developed a modern flexible code that meets the differing demands of golfers across the globe, thereby enabling a single joint code to be established.

Province claims 2011 SA Junior Inter-Provincial Western Province took control of the South African Junior Inter-Provincial on day two and remained in ascendancy throughout the next two rounds. Little surprise then that the Cape side claimed the country’s premier junior team competition with two more magnificent victories at Leopard Park Golf Club last month. Leading by just one point, there was at least a mathematical chance that second-placed Gauteng North could force a draw with Province if they won both their matches and the Cape side faltered. But while the Northerns team hoped that either Border or Boland would present a potential speed hump, the Western Province players saved their best for last. The eight-man side sparked to life in the home stretch of their title hunt, casting both opponents side with another imperious performance. Province came out firing against Border, losing one match and halving another to blast to a 10-5 - 1.5 victory. While their match against Boland went down the wire, the Province players underlined their tenacity in a closely fought contest to wrap up a 6.5 - 5.5 victory and claim the spoils. They finished two points clear of Gauteng North, on 20 points overall.

tally to 18 points. Meanwhile Central Gauteng beat KwaZulu-Natal 7 - 5 and Limpopo 8 – 4 to tie Northerns for second place, but Central was forced to third after losing on the games count by a slender 3.5. Since junior golf now also falls under the auspices of the South African Golf Association, this year marked the last time that all the teams competed at equal footing. Next year’s Junior IPT will be played to the same format as the SA IPT, Mid-Amateur IPT and Senior IPT, with six teams in the A-Division and seven in the B-Division. “We worked exceptionally hard for this win, right down to the last game in the last match. We never took anything for granted. Like I’ve said all week, we are a team that bats from one to eight; there are no superstars, the whole team contributed and that’s why we pulled it through.”

The R&A and USGA announces new rules for 2012 First-ever joint publication of the Rules by golf ’s governing bodies St Andrews, Scotland: The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced the publication of the new Rules of Golf for 2012 - 15. Changes in the Rules – which for the first time have been designed, published and presented jointly by golf ’s governing bodies – include exonerating a player from penalty if it is known their ball was moved by the wind after address.

is reduced from disqualification to loss of the first hole in match play or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play. Previously this penalty reduction could be introduced as a condition of competition.

Following an exhaustive, four-year review of golf ’s 34 playing Rules, nine principal Rules have been amended to improve clarity and ensure penalties are proportionate. Significant changes include:

Commenting on the revisions to the Rules of Golf supported by Rolex, The R&A's Director of Rules and Equipment Standards David Rickman said: “The key point is that the Rules of Golf will remain fundamentally the same. We have undergone a pretty extensive review although what has come out of that has been relatively modest.

Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b). A new exception is added which exonerates the player from penalty if their ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that they did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position. Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4). Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached. Time of Starting (Rule 6-3a). The rule is amended to provide that the penalty for starting late, but within five minutes of the starting time, 68

“The Rules of Golf are constantly evolving and our hope is that what we have produced for 2012 is clear, informed by common sense and reflective of the demands of the modern game.” USGA Senior Director of Rules of Golf Thomas Pagel said: “We have produced a unified code of the Rules of Golf for 60 years and although the context has been the same, we often found the perception that there were different Rules in place depending upon where you were to play the game. “Now the book will not only have the same content, but it will also be presented in a uniform fashion with similar formatting and covers; this will truly be a single code governing the Rules of the game that reflects the strong collaboration between The R&A and USGA.”

Improve your short game with 1 simple drill An essential part of lowering your scores is a good short game. A sound chipping “action is key to getting the ball up and down more often than not! Clinton is a member of the Sunshine Tour, European Tour and the Professional Golfers Association of South Africa

In this tip you can use a simple drill that is easy to practise and will improve your chipping fundamentals in no time at all!

Start by addressing the ball as per normal (for a pitch of about 20 metres). Then move your right foot back (for right handed golfers) so that your right toe is in line with your left heel. Lift your right heel off the ground.

Moving my foot into this position helps with the following: 1. It forces my weight onto my left foot (opposite for lefties) 2. It allows me to rotate through the chip and not “SCOOP” the shot 3. It forces me to finish with my weight on my left side.

In this picture you can see that a scoop leaves my weight on my right side and leads to thin and fat chips.

Good luck with this tip and if you have any problems with your short game, please consult with a qualified PGA Professional.

Vandag se spelers is nie so goed met distansie beheer soos Nick Faldo, Nick Price, Mark McNulty, John

76

Practicing Tips With the arrival of the December holiday there is ample time to do some practicing! These practicing tips will definitely help you when you go and play you with your dad so that you can take his cash! Practicing long game and pitching at home is difficult due to the length of the shots. But this doesn’t mean you can’t practice. Add some practice balls and hoops to your Christmas wish list to help you improving your game. Mareli Joubert Tuks Golf Academy Elite Coach: Centurion CC

So, how do we do this? Arrange the hoops approximately 4-5m in width; the number of hoops will determine the length of your fairway. With the knowledge that you already have about the full swing, make sure not just to hit the ball far but also straight, keeping it between the hoops! Place a marker where your ball lands to see how your distance improves.

KIDS STUFF

Chipping practicing must always be fun! When you are at the golf course, head over to the chipping area - place your hoop on long tees so that it is elevated from the ground. Put another hoop around a specific hole. The idea is to pitch the ball in the elevated hoop and then it must roll the distance to the hoop that is around the hole. This will give you a good idea of how the ball will react if you hit a high or low chip shot.

As you know by now putting is extremely important. Sometimes it is difficult to judge the speed of putt. Once again, place a hoop on long tees so that a golf ball can pass through underneath the hoop. To practice both uphill and downhill putts, place the hoop on a slope that will give you an opportunity to putt from both sides of the slope. Use 5 balls, starting +- 5m away from the hole. To be successful, the ball must finish inside the elevated hoop. See how many out of 5 balls you can do successfully, and then move further away. This can also be done with a putt that breaks from right-to-left or left-to-right!

Have fun practicing and playing!

Kelapile wins Vusi Ngubeni Q – School While only five players managed to score below par in torrential conditions at Observatory Golf Club, Alpheus Kelapile was as calm as the eye of the storm and shot 72 to win Vusi Ngubeni Qualifying School. “I really needed this. Last night I told myself to do whatever it took… today I restored my confidence in myself,” he said. His vision led him past the wind and rain, and he closed the tournament at eight-underpar, claiming the first of 10 Sunshine Tour cards handed out on Friday. He could see the finish line by the 14th hole and did not falter, finishing one stroke clear of Jack Kutumane, who shot 70 for his final 18. “From the 13th I looked at the scoreboard and I thought to myself ‘you’ve got this’ and didn’t look back. All I aimed for was to keep it in play: hit the fairway, hit the green. I knew that it was mine to lose, and I would not allow that,” he said. Also earning cards were: Irvin Mazibuko, Allister de Kock (AMA), Elvis Sithebe(AMA), Thabo Maseko(AMA), Rocky Tlhabanyane, Makgetha Mazibuko, Sung-Moon Hohng(AMA), George Brown. Hohng and Brown ousted Neo Thubisi and John Bele in a countout after all four players finished at one-over. Finishing first took cool nerves and showcased the 27-year-old as a quiet danger in the coming season. “It’s been a long, long time coming. These refreshments typically cost a fortune, which probably explains why golf courses hire beautiful young women to sell them.
