Good for you Charl! It was an absolute pleasure to stay up late and watch arguably the best finish ever to a Major! Winning is great, but to win in the style with which Charl Schwartzel did it is nothing less than awesome! Congratulations Charl, for winning the Masters and for showing the world the talent that South African Golf possesses! I believe that many a golf commentator (especially in Australia) were left speechless after Charl played the last four holes at Augusta flawlessly and flew past the field like a Ferrari overtaking a Putco bus! Congratulations also to our talented business administrators who have secured a World Golf Championship event to be played in South Africa. Who wouldn’t want to watch the 70 best golfers in the world? What a treat for us golf hungry South Africans.

Part 2 of 3 in our new series on how the golf course superintendents get the courses ready for tournament play. Brought to you by Sue de Zwart who was golf course superintendent at Leopard Creek Country Club from 1997 to 2005. Sue has worked at four U.S. Masters and two U.S. Opens. As the event draws closer you need to continually tick items off the checklist you have drawn up. 3 months prior to the event is a critical time as there is a lot to happen in the next 2 months. The last month is purely for the finer detail.
Tournament Check List 3 months prior to an event: •
Send out an invitation to potential volunteer staff. It is great to give previous volunteers who worked well the 1st option.
•
Ensure that you have sufficient equipment for your tournament schedule plan to be way ahead of play – ideally all maintenance should be completed or no more than 6 holes left by the time the golfers tee off. This will allow you a cushion in case of any unforeseen issues – e.g. animal damage on a green, equipment break down. One additional staff member in the workshop is really helpful.
•
Do a final hole by hole check on the irrigation system. Ensure that the information in the field matches the information on the central control – if the number of sprinklers doesn’t correlate or % adjustment is too high or too low this will affect the end product.
•
Check all the pumps – clean the leaf trap & the filter.
•
The irrigation system is the heart of the golf course – the turf quality is largely dependent on meeting the water needs of the plant.
Mowing patterns This should be started 6 weeks prior to an event provided you are able to alternate the direction of cut. Don’t mow clean up passes unnecessarily to cause unnecessary compaction in these areas. Remember to check all your lines from the green to the tee (as the TV cameras are set up), in order to do any necessary tweaking of lines. Mowing patterns are personal – different clubs have different tastes however there are a few key goals one would like to achieve. 6

SPECIAL FEATURE
•
Define the hole as best one can
•
Keep lines in line with the direction of play where possible i.e. if you opt for a straight line on the fairway – let it guide the golfer as to where the line of play is.
•
Mow straight lines – it is critical to have a well trained eye on mowers for an event
•
Strive for perfection
Greens: This is a good time to ensure that the leaf blade is standing upright to ensure a true roll. A light verticutting & regular brooming is critical from 3 months prior to the event. Don’t take any drastic measures – slowly but surely stand the turf up. Ensure that you have a healthy surface going into an event. Allow a collar to grow up to 6mm which you can slowly take down 6 weeks prior to the event. If you would like a collar on the green for the week of the tournament it needs to be clearly visible – this can be tough with regular mowing & the occasional rolling. My experience has been best to have no collar to avoid ruling issues.
Bunkers: All capping of bunkers must be completed 2 months prior to a tournament. This is a good time to ensure your bunker sand levels are all 100 to 150 mm. All edging of bunkers should be completed to ensure that the bunkers are as close to the original shape as possible. It works well to have a 100 mm wide & 2mm thick rigid plastic liner around the bunkers which one continuously edges back to. The picture below is of a group of us mowing at the very 1st major tournament I ever worked in the USA. We all filled up our machines with diesel & set out to mow. The volunteer ahead of me had forgotten to replace his diesel cap & as a result there was diesel splashing everywhere which would clearly kill areas once we reached the course. As our machines were all the same speed & equally noisy it was very difficult to catch his attention. After this we were all given tennis balls to throw at another operator in the event of a hydraulic leak or similar issue! It works like a bomb for all groups of ride on equipment. The more organised you are prior to a tournament the better the end result, the less stressful it is & you can actually enjoy a wonderful week! March/April 2011

WINNING LETTER Dear Neville I am myself nowhere near being a Pro player and have mostly been playing off a middle of the pack handicap. Now as an amateur and someone who is constantly trying to find ways and means of improving what I do on the golf course over weekends it has become almost natural for me to tinker and change my golf swing to try and better my game. This, in my life and game, is not a major thing as it is normally little changes that mostly occur by themselves. This brings me to my point. Why would a professional golfer undergo a swing change? If this is something that they do for a living and they have been doing successfully for a number of years, why would they want to make a change that could potentially cost them quite a lot of money as it were? I understand being in a job where you are not happy with your position or circumstance, but here I am referring more to
changing something that seemingly was not broken to start off with. I am referring specifically to Tiger Woods now. He has made 2 swing changes during his career, the latest one still giving him problems on the course. Why would he make these changes to his swing when what he was doing before was obviously working if you consider how much he has won and how successful he has been through the years? He was winning regularly and swinging confidently and then he decides to make the latest swing change and now he is struggling a lot with consistency and finding that same dominance he used to have. Please enlighten an uneducated mind as to why one would make such as dramatic change that has such a big impact on what you do for a living, and used to do really well without the change as well.
Dear Johan This is something on many people’s minds as Tiger Woods is now in fact in the middle of his third major swing overhaul as a professional. He first changed his technique after the 1997 Masters, which he won by a record 12 strokes. Woods felt that he got lucky and that he needed sound mechanics rather than relying on good timing alone. So his first pro coach, Butch Harmon worked on slowing down his torso movement on the downswing. These initial tweaks produced the greatest run in modern golf history. Between the 1999 PGA Championship and the 2002 U.S. Open, Woods won seven out of 11 majors, including four in a row (2000 and 2001). But after his victory in the 2002 U.S. Open, Woods wanted another overhaul, which Harmon didn’t believe he needed and they parted ways that year. His next coach, Hank Haney said that when he and Woods first teamed up in 2003, Woods sought changes that would ease the pressure on his left knee; however Hankey believes that Woods' knee was not the sole reason for the changes. So now Woods is rebuilding yet again, with his new coach Sean Foley getting him to tighten his grip on the club and keeping his arms closer to his body, this should improve his efficiency and keep Woods straighter. But as you say golf swings are sometimes perhaps best left alone. Even for someone like Woods you have to wonder how many changes he can handle before self doubt starts creeping in. Regards
Congratulations to Johan - you have won a PGA voucher worth R500! May/June 2011

Charl Schwartzel. . . The Masters During that run of 10 pars, Schwartzel had been a little iffy off the tees, but there was nothing of that on 17 and 18, and his approaches were as secure as they ever have been, leaving himself with makeable – but not short – birdie putts. That he drained both of them to first draw one clear and then two clear of Scott – and to keep off the charge by Day who closed with two birdies of his own on 17 and 18 – spoke volumes of his character. Tiger Woods made a thrilling charge when turned in 31, igniting the roars around the course which make the final day so exciting, but when he bogeyed the par-three 12th in the heart of Amen Corner, his iding a run of four successive birdies over push for victory came unravelled. the final four holes of Augusta National, Charl Schwartzel pulled off an extraor- There were no such problems for Schwartzel, who dinary victory in one of the most surfed the excitement and the noise home for a fabulous victory. “It was such an exciting day,” he said. thrilling Masters ever. “The atmosphere was incredible. His closing six-under-par 66 shut out by two strokes the attempts by the Australian duo of Adam Scott and Jason Day to become the first player from Down Under to win the Masters. And it took extraordinary patience by Schwartzel as he endured a run of 10 consecutive pars as the lead ebbed and flowed about him before he was able to launch his final assault on the summit. “I was getting tight coming down 15,” he admitted. “Adam was in front and Jason was making a move, and I needed to do something,” he said. He hit a six-iron in to the par-five 15th, setting up the first of his closing four birdies there, and then, with almost uncanny calmness, he managed to put his tee shot on the par-three 16th close enough for the next one. 10

SPECIAL FEATURE – WINTER GOLF BREAKS – KNYSNA
Knysna Golf Club
K
nysna Golf Club was founded in 1909 and only moved to its present location in 1953. It started as a 9-hole course and was made an 18-hole course in 1960. The course originally had bayview greens and very few bunkers until, in 1994, an extensive upgrade program was launched and 19 new Crenshaw bent grass greens were built.
Over the years, new tidal pools and channels have been introduced and real attention paid to the bunkering throughout the layout. That this has been successfully implemented can be seen from the clubhouse, for the eighteenth hole now has a superb bent grass surface covering a large undulating area. Together with an attractive and potentially hazardous water feature as a backdrop, shapely and well manicured bunkers protecting the green add to what is now a substantial finishing challenge. The Knysna golf course nevertheless remains an enjoyable and gentle stroll through tree-lined fairways and you will not experience the fatigue you might on the more testing courses in the region. The surrounding hills and mountains provide scenic backdrops and there is a great variety of trees, flowers and bird-life to watch out for.
The newly rebuilt clubhouse comprises a luxurious bar and lounge with 4 widescreen satellite television screens. A large deck with braai facilities overlooks the 9th green and provides a good view of this wonderful golf course's signature hole. The Halfway House serves light meals, snacks and drinks at affordable prices. The Knysna Golf Club is able to cater for large groups and frequently hosts business and social functions. The course measures 5,924 meters off the men's tees and 5,168 meters off the ladies' tees. It plays to a par of 73 with a South African Golf Union rating of 71.
Pezula Golf Course Pezula is a stunningly beautiful golf course and is a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine Southern Cape landscape. The breathtaking, award-winning 18-hole golf course, designed by David Dale and Ronald Fream of GolfPlan USA, offers visitors an unsurpassed golf experience, and rates amongst the best and the most scenic golf courses in the world. In 2001, just a few months after it opened, the course was awarded Best New Golf Course in South Africa. Continued on p21

the Garden Route) reflects his philosophy of attuning the layout and design to the natural lie of the land. The course offers challenging and rewarding golf amidst spectacular scenery. Set below the high ridges, it’s free of the wind that so often plagues coastal courses. Fairways flow with the natural undulating contours of the terrain and the unusual configuration of five par-5’s and five par-3’s adds a new dimension to the game. It is clear to see why Simola takes its place as one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations.
The average round takes 4 hours 50 minutes, including a half-way break. Rental sets of golf clubs are available for guests who do not bring their own clubs.
Simola Golf Estate Situated high up in the hills above Knysna, Simola Golf & Country Estate is a world apart. The Knysna Oyster Festival – 1st to the 10th of July The best 10 days of your winter!
C
elebrating sport and the good life, the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival has established itself over the last 27 years as one of the most popular annual events in the Western Cape.
The first Oyster Festival took place in 1983 and was the brainchild of the late Dick Ginsberg, a local businessman. He and Rose Smith from the then Knysna Publicity Office organised the Knysna Winter Festival, which featured a marathon, rugby, golf, squash, and bowls. The purpose of the festival was to attract people to Knysna during the quiet winter period. The Navy was involved almost from the outset and in 1984 the Chief of the Navy, Vice Admiral A P Putter visited Knysna together with a navy minesweeper and a number of crew. In 1988 the Freedom of Entry into the Municipality of Knysna was conferred on the Navy. In 1985 the cycling races added more sporting events to the program. Today it is every runner's dream to complete the famous Pick n Pay Cape Times Forest

Oysters are, of course, a huge component of the festival and every year about 200 000 of them are consumed over the 10 days by visitors. Other traditional favourites of the festival include the Pick n Pay Oyster & Wine Mardi Gras (previously the Oyster Cooking Competition), the Oyster Eating Competition, the Waitron Race and the Bowls Tournament. The festival has grown to include a huge charity component and the involvement of the local community, to ensure that everyone in Knysna benefits from the huge boost to the economy that the festival brings every year.

The story behind the fabled Knysna forest elephants
I
n the deep-green depths of the Knysna forest lives the last, tiny remnant of the once great herds of Cape bush elephant. Of the original group just one female remains, though three elephants where recently brought in from the Kruger National park. Elephants are the largest land mammals, second to the great whales as the largest living creature. A big male can stand up to four meters tall and weigh six or seven tons. The Knysna Elephants are the last of the most southern elephants on the African continent. They represent a remnant of large populations, which occupied the Cape in the 17th century. The elephants were confined to an area of roughly 150 square km in the forest of Diepwalle, Gouna and Buffelsnek. In 1876 it was estimated that between 400 and 500 giants roamed the forests of Knysna. The numbers declined partly due to poaching and ivory smuggling. In 1908 when the elephants were declared royal game only 20 were counted. An elephant's tusks or ivory can extend to three meters each and weigh as much as 100 kilograms. This is a very popular item to smugglers. An elephant's tusks are its only two front teeth, which continue to grow throughout life. Tusks never grow again when they are lost. Males carry longer and heavier tusks than females. It can reach such a length that they touch the ground when the animal stands at rest. Apart from fighting, sparring and jousting, an elephant uses its tusks almost continuously while feeding. Using them in conjunction with its trunk to break branches, peeling bark, stripping off thorns and digging for roots. Elephants are usually left or right handed and will use one tusk almost exclusively. According to forestry records 12 elephants survived by 1920 and in 1962 only 10 were counted. After having remained static for 50 years, the Knysna elephant population decreased rapidly and in 1983 only four were recorded. This population crash was merely the dying out of the old animals. The Margate Sardine Festival – 23rd June to the 12th of July
S
ardines, or more correctly the pilchard Sardinops sagax, are a small and primitive fish that do not as a rule find the Zulu Kingdom's warm stretch of Indian Ocean to their liking. Incalculable, vast shoals prefer to enact their short, yet virulent life cycles near the surface of the Cape Province's cold to icy cold waters. Each year around June or July, however, when the Hibiscus Coast sea temperature drops by a mere four or five Degrees Celsius from its average midsummer high of 21 Degrees, sardines off the Eastern Cape mistakenly sense a potential expansion of habitat to their north. This is the widely accepted theory in scientific circles. Earlier postulations of instinctive spawning or feeding-migrations have been ruled out on account of KwaZulu-Natal's relative lack of plankton and tiny crustaceans - the staple diet of young and juvenile sardines. A narrow continental shelf thereafter ensures that the shoal proceeds close to shore - and in mortal danger throughout its journey. The sardines' running of the gauntlet begins in this narrow underwater strait, an 'exodus' with only one possible outcome, and dubbed with the now familiar moniker the 'Sardine Run'. By the time these hapless sardines reach Port Edward, they've already garnered a mass of unwanted attention and are in a state of utter frenzy. This agitation increases as more and more waiting predators join the freefor-all. The view from any Hibiscus Coast beach - Port Edward to Hibberdene - is of an exploding, silverpurple hued ocean surface being attacked from the air by thousands-strong squadrons of Cape gannets and cormorants, and from all remaining sides by a massed variety of denizens of the deep.

O
ver the past year Margate Country Club has played host to many fund raising events. The response from our members to the efforts made by various organizations has, and always will be fantastically overwhelming. It is with this effort in mind that we are now appealing to you to bring your group or individuals to support OUR once a year fundraiser. This Is a fund raising Golf Competition to be held over the period 16, 17, 18th June 2011. Funds from this event will be channeled to our much needed ‘self-help’ cause, namely, irrigation of our grounds. Let’s make it a win, win situation. • Sponsorship of a team [betterball pairing] R 1500.00 or R750.00pp for individuals. • Sponsorship of 2 or more teams R1500.00 per team, allows for advertising of your business on designated holes. [R1000.00 for both] • Donations of vouchers, prizes and discounts will be greatly appreciated. Please note that a VAT invoice will accompany all payments. Fees cover all 3 days play and include a player’s Goodie bag, halfway house refreshments, snack baskets at daily prize giving, entry into LUCKY DRAW prizes, Should you have any queries and would like to book a hole or give a prize or donation please contact Dereck Hirson at 0393120571 or 0832269568 May/June 2011

Bothma crowned the king of Kenya Eleven years after his compatriot Trevor Immelman won the event, South African Michiel Bothma triumphed at the Barclays Kenya Open to capture his first Challenge Tour title. His victory by two shots from fellow South African Tyrone Ferreira was sweet relief for Bothma, who had won previously on his native Sunshine Tour but never in five seasons on the Challenge Tour. The man from Pretoria, who played in the final group with his cousin Branden Grace and room-mate André Bossert, got his round off to the best possible start with a birdie on the first hole at Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi on route to a superb round of 68. Bothma received the trophy from Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki and a winner’s cheque for €30,400 which moved him to the top of the Challenge Tour Rankings, and gave him every chance of claiming a European Tour card for the first time.

World Golf Championship for South Africa
F
ollowing extensive meetings in Augusta, Georgia with the US PGA Tour and the International Federation of PGA Tours (of which the Sunshine Tour is a founder member), Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour Gareth Tindall announced last month that the Sunshine Tour will host and stage a World Golf Championships event in South Africa from 2012. While the exact dates and venue are still to be confirmed, the event, which will feature the top 70 players on the Official World Golf Ranking, will be closely linked to building awareness of poverty and the HIV/Aids pandemic in Africa and will be known as the Tournament of Hope. “This is, without doubt, the most significant milestone in the history of professional golf in South Africa,” said an elated Tindall on his return from Augusta. “It is something that we as the Sunshine Tour have been working on for a long time and the unanimous support that we have received from the other professional Tours around the world confirms the major standing of our players and the Sunshine Tour in world golf.
56
“What is even more significant is that we have the commitment that we will host this World Golf Championships event for a period of five years. That has enormously positive implications for the game and for our country as a whole.” Also coming out of the meetings was the fact that the dates of the South African Open Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Championship will swap so that the SA Open will no longer clash with The Presidents Cup, which will be held in Australia from 16 to 21 November. This will clear the way for defending champion Ernie Els, new Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and other South Africans to play in both events. “The International team in this year’s Presidents Cup is likely to feature at least five South Africans,” said Tindall, “and we wanted to ensure that they have the opportunity to play in both events. We are delighted that we were able to reach this agreement and must pay tribute to our long-time sponsor Alfred Dunhill for agreeing to the compromise.” In closing, Tindall added, “We now find ourselves at the beginning of one of the most exciting chapters in South African sport and we have plenty of work to do. We look forward to being able to make further announcements about the WGC event in due course.”

Take that, Feherty!
I
have no problem with David Feherty – or anyone else – changing nationality and becoming patriotic in his adopted country. But Feherty’s Tigerpumping (like the word? I thought of it myself, and considered the implications of using it, too) during the final round of the Masters yesterday was little short of nauseating. I was too intoxicated with the excitement, and Woods was certainly part of the unfolding story – a big part of it. But, like all South Africans I guess, I was willing Charl Schwartzel on, hoping against hope that he would find another 58
birdie as he reeled off 10 pars in a row after he dropped his only shot of the day on the fourth. And, as Woods went on the characteristic charge which got the American patrons back to full voice around Augusta National, the implications of his being able to hold things together were certainly threatening to the scenario Charl fans were hoping for. But for Feherty to drool over his every move – good and bad – on an international broadcast was in extraordinarily bad taste.
week’s Global Golf Post, “At his best, Woods would never have played the stretch from 12 through 15 in even par from where he had the ball.
I

NEW ‘MIRACLE’ GOLF BALL ON THE WAY TO IMPROVE SA GOLFERS’ ROUNDS Last month leading science-based and services company, DuPont, has partnered with Nike Golf for a transformational golf ball core that adds distance, straightens shots and improves control, according to Nike test results. The revolutionary new Nike 20XI golf balls showcase a breakthrough design which increases distance, speed and control. The Nike 20XI ball features a lightweight core composed of highly engineered, thermoplastic resin formulated using DuPont™ HPF ionomer technology. “DuPont has been the ideal partner for us on the 20XI ball. They are the world leader when it comes to materials, science and innovation,” said Rock Ishii, product development director – Nike Golf. “This collaboration between DuPont scientists and Nike golf ball engineers has resulted in the next revolution of golf ball development.” Four years in the making, the new Nike 20XI ball design replaces rubber cores with a highly-engineered, DuPont thermoplastic resin developed specifically for use in golf balls. This advanced core technology makes the new 20XI ball faster, and Nike’s new design makes it possible to achieve both greater distance and greater control. “Collaboration is the catalyst needed to ensure DuPont science delivers a big impact to customers,” said Bill Harvey, president – DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers. “Nike brought us their challenge, and together we were able to develop this new material. Golfers will be well served.” “By working directly with golf ball design engineers, we can better understand how to transform their ball performance targets into property and performance targets for our materials,” said Jim de Garavilla, P&IP global technology lead for golf. “Having an intimate knowledge of customer needs, along with an intimate knowledge of our advanced ionomer technology platform, enables us to bridge the gap between customer needs and our DuPont material technology. “It's exciting to work with a partner like Nike that is as committed to innovation as DuPont,” Jim said. “Over the last four years, Nike has been relentless in their effort and commitment to bring DuPont's higher performance, advanced thermoplastic ionomer resin technology into golf ball core applications.” May/June 2011

Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point Open To All Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort - which Americanbased Links magazine recently rated the 8th most spectacular course in the world - has been open to all golfers for almost 18 months.
“You no longer need to stay to play, and the word is spreading, with a lot more locals coming to enjoy the course,” said the Resort’s general manager of golf operations, Jason Totos. Mr. Totos is deeply passionate about Pinnacle Point because, he said, it’s easy to explain why it’s so unique. “The setting makes the experience. “We’ve got seven holes on the cliff-side, and where many clubs blow you away with the condition of the course or the wow-factor of the club house, we prefer to let the course do the talking. “It really does take your breath away. Players go from one hole to the next thinking it just can’t get better - and it does! Watching whales and dolphins at play, those incredible cliff-top shots... “For me, this course is about being spectacular: it’s like playing golf IMAX style. “You certainly won’t find anything like it in Africa - and, in fact, it was the only African course in Links magazine’s top ten.” So - is it very expensive to play, then? “Definitely not,” said Mr. Totos. “We’re going into our winter period now, and from the 1st of May it’ll cost you just R495.00 a round - and that includes your golf cart. We also host a meat competition on the third Wednesday of each month which costs only R250.00.” 64
He said that accommodation is available on the course in a selection of luxurious private villas and lodges. “The accommodation is managed by Leisure Rentals, which is a subsidiary of the Resort’s Homeowner’s Association. “It makes our rates very competitive and affordable.”He said that the course is in very good condition despite the drought that’s gripped the Mossel Bay area for the last two years. “Even the rough is looking good; it’s all fynbos, and we’ve made the removal of invasive alien vegetation a priority so that the natural plant community is able to thrive.” Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that Pinnacle Point is an important part of the town’s tourism offering. “And it’s great that it’s open and available to all,” she said.

Course made longer for British Open
SANDWICH, England -- The Royal St. George's course will be 100 yards longer for this year's British Open, with par being reduced from 71 to 70. Organizers say the famous fourth hole -- with a huge bunker staring players in the face as they tee off -- is being changed from a 497-yard par 5 to a 495-yard par 4. The third hole will be increased by 30 yards to 240 yards, while the long seventh goes from 532 to 564 yards and the ninth from 388 to 412 yards. In the main alteration on the back nine, the 15th will be stretched from 475 yards to a 496-yard par 4. Eight years ago, American winner Ben Curtis was the
66
only player to break par at the course, and only by one shot. The previous time, in 1983, Greg Norman set a championship record of 13-under 267. In another change, the fairway on the first hole has been widened by about 12 yards. In 2003, Tiger Woods lost a ball with his first shot at Royal St. George's and took a triple-bogey 7. Less than 30 percent of all drives finished on the fairway in 2003. "Tiger's lost ball was not an influence -- it was the overall statistic of 27-28 percent," Royal & Ancient Club chief executive Peter Dawson said.

Schwartzel inspires Williams’ win at Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur12 Apr 2011 Kim Williams lauded 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel for inspiring her successful title defence at the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Rustenburg GC last month. The country’s number one ranked amateur trailed by three going into the final round. Williams said she took a page out of Schwartzel’s book to rise above two disappointing rounds. “The night before the final round I was thinking about the way Charl came from behind to win,” explained Williams. Williams fought her way to a masterful fourunder-par 68 to seal her second successive stroke play title with an emphatic four stroke victory. Monique Smit slipped into third on two over 218 with a closing 74 while joint overnight leaders Iliska Verwey and Nobuhle Dlamini signed for 78s to tie for fourth on one over. Williams knew going into the final round that she needed a good start and back-to-back birdies on the opening holes set her on the right track.
Williams was also thrilled to learn that she joined just a handful of players with back-toback victories at the Sanlam Women’s SA Stroke Play championship. Alison Sheard won the championship in 1974 and 1975, and again in 1978 and 1979. Tanica van As triumphed in 2002 and 2003 and Ashleigh Simon dominated the tournament from 2004 to 2007. “It’s quite an honour; it’s a great group of ladies to be amongst.” FINAL SCORES: 212 Kim Williams 70-74-68 216 Bertine Strauss 70-73-73 218 Monique Smit 70-74-74 219 Nobuhle Dlamini SWZ 73-68-78; Iliska Verwey 67-74-78
Verwey claims Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Iliska Verwey underlined her growing potential when she won an enthralling 34-hole marathon against Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini to claim the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Match Play Championship title at Rustenburg GC last month. The WGSA number two was delighted to lift the Match Play trophy just days after letting the Stroke Play championship slip. The 22-year-old Eastern Cape golfer had led the first two rounds of the stroke play championship but couldn’t maintain the focus to challenge Kim Williams, who successfully defended her title. On the final day Verwey found a way to push the envelope all the way to the winner’s circle. The match was an incredible tussle. She never let up and every time I got my nose in front, she lifted her game. “It all changed for me going down the last 11 holes. I knew I had to dig deep because only birdies would do it and I was able to deliver. “Winning on this stage has been my dream ever since I started playing. To come back after such a disappointing season last year and turn things around like this, is incredible.” May/June 2011

PRODUCT REVIEW
P R O D U C T R E V I E W RANGEHOLDER VISIT THE DRIVING RANGE IN STYLE!
Every now and then we at SA Golf Trader come across a new product that really impresses; the Rangeholder is one such product. The Rangeholder is a fantastic new innovation that makes your visit to the Driving Range an absolute pleasure. The Rangeholder is a small, very handy product that substitutes your golf bag. It holds 5 clubs which makes it ideal for the Driving Range and even a quick nine Holes. Whilst down the KZN South Coast recently I played nine holes at Margate CC and used the Rangeholder. I took along a Driver, 6iron, 9iron, sand wedge and my putter, and found that I could carry all that I needed with ease including my glove, extra balls, tee’s, wallet, cellphone etc. I showed the Rangeholder to the guys at the Tuks Golf Academy in Pretoria and they were really impressed with the lightweight construction and the brilliant way that the clubs are balanced whilst carrying them. The Rangeholder would make an ideal gift and I think here of the corporate market in particular, as it can easily be branded. With a recommended retail price of R380 including VAT, it offers good value for money. The Rangeholder is a very handy, practical product and if you are playing any form of golf that requires only five clubs then it is a must have! 72

Create more power and “zip” by turning your shoulders properly When I ask most Amateurs and Professionals alike, what is the single part of their game they would like to see improve, the answer is always- “I want to hit it further” The easiest way to create more power and width in your golf swing is, quite simply, to turn the shoulders correctly. Using my aiming sticks by placing them across my chest is probably the easiest way to check your amount of turn (you can also use a golf club)

TUITION & INSTRUCTION
In the pictures below I have not made a full turn as my shoulders have not rotated 90 degrees and my back is not facing the target. This has caused me to tilt and get steep on the backswing. I now have to use my hands and small muscles to create power instead of my legs, chest and shoulders!
In the following pictures you can see that by turning 90 degrees and having my back facing the target I have more space, width and coil. This ‘windup’ of the shoulders will allow me to unwind my bigger muscles thereby creating a lot more club head speed and giving me a much more solid impact position!
Ensure that your shoulders turn 90 degrees, either in a mirror or by using a club or aiming sticks. If you cannot rotate 90 degrees you will be limited in terms of your power.
To find out if you do have a full range of shoulder rotation, please consult with your local PGA Professional and start hitting the ball much further!

D

Ball Position & Stance
In this month’s tip we will be covering Ball Position and Stance.
One of the most common mistakes that we see young golfers’, in fact golfers’ of all ages make is incorrect Ball Position. The fact of the matter is that the Ball Position should always remain in the same place and only your stance changes! Confused?! Let me explain...
Emile Steinmann, Elite Coach Tuks Golf Academy
80
The Ball Position should always be just inside your left heel (if you are a right-handed golfer). To quote the game’s greatest, Jack Nicklaus, “The standard ball position is expressed as ball off the left heel. Just remember, the width of your stance determines how far back or forward the ball actually is.”
www.sagolftrader.co.za
May/June 2011
KIDS STUFF
If you are hitting a chip shot, your Stance will be very narrow. In fact, your feet will be touching each other. Because your Stance is narrow, the Ball Position appears to be on your back foots big toe but it is actually still just inside the left heel!
If you are hitting an iron shot, your Stance will be slightly wider. Your feet will be about shoulder width apart. Because your Stance is wider, the Ball Position appears to be further forward but it is actually still just inside the left heel!
If you are hitting a shot with your driver, your Stance will be wide. Your feet will be even more than shoulder width apart. To quote Tiger Woods, “your shoulders should be able to fit in between your heels.” Because your Stance is very wide, the Ball Position appears to be far forward when in fact it is still just inside the left heel! So, remember, your Ball Position never changes but your Stance width does! Good luck practising this very important fundamental and we’ll be back with another tip in the next issue. Play well!

R&A exec calls for public reprimands Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson believes the PGA and European tours should start going public with their discipline of players. The U.S. tour does not disclose when a player is fined, and the European Tour typically keeps such matters quiet. It made an exception when Tiger Woods was shown on TV spitting on the green in Dubai because of the enormous publicity. Woods later apologized on Twitter. "I would not want to give the impression in any way that the standards of behavior in golf are poor," Dawson told the Press Association on Tuesday at Royal May/June 2011
St. George's. "I think they are very high, and golf is still held up as a model for many other sports. These particular incidents that we see do get a great deal of publicity and rightly so.
"There are many good reasons for keeping it quiet, but I think it's possibly something that the tours who do that should look at changing, because I think putting these things in the public domain has a lot of benefits -especially now that golf is an Olympic sport."
"As regards what the tours' disciplinary policy should be in terms of whether it should be made public, I think if you look at the wider world of sport, that has become the norm," he said. www.sagolftrader.co.za

Sunshine Tour Announces Major Development Initiative The Sunshine Tour announced the launch of the Sunshine Big Easy Tour presented by Stonehage, a mini-tour dedicated to giving a wider cross section of professionals to play in competitive professional events. Sunshine Tour commissioner Gareth Tindall said, “As the Sunshine Tour continues to grow, we need to make sure we give more opportunities to develop skills in the professional game to a wider range of players, especially those who perhaps haven’t had many opportunities to excel in amateur golf ranks. The Big Easy Tour provides exactly that.” The Tour is named after three-time Major winner Ernie Els in recognition of his continued commitment to the development of the May/June 2011

What is a rider ? A foursome of ladies came back after a round of golf. At the 19th hole in the Clubhouse, the Pro asked them "How did your game go?" The first said she had a good round with 25 riders. The second said she did OK with 16 riders. The third said not too bad since I had 10 riders. The fourth was disappointed and said that she played badly with only two riders. The Pro was confounded by this term "rider" but not wanting to show his ignorance just smiled and wish them better golf the next time. He then approach ed Jerry the bartender and asked "Jerry, can you tell me what does this term 'riders' mean?" Jerry smiled and explained that a "rider" is when you have hit a shot long enough to take a ride on a golf cart.

Four guys who worked together always golfed as a group at 7 a.m. Sunday. But one of them got transferred, and they were talking about trying to fill out the foursome. A woman standing near the tee said, "Hey, I like to golf, can I join the group?" They were hesitant but said she could come once to try it. She said "Good, I'll be there at 6:30 or quarter to seven." She showed up right at 6:30, and wound up setting a course record with a 7-under-par round. The guys went nuts and everyone in the clubhouse congratulated her. Meanwhile, she was fun and pleasant the entire round. The guys happily invited her back the next week and she said "Sure, I'll be here at 6:30 or quarter to 7." Again, she showed up at 6:30 Sunday morning. Only this time, she played left-handed, and matched her 7-under par score of the previous week. By now the guys were totally amazed, and they asked her to join the group for keeps. They had a beer after their round, and one of the guys asked her, "how do you know if you're going to golf right-handed or lefthanded?" She said "That's easy. Before I leave for the golf course, I pull the covers off my husband, who sleeps in the nude. If his member is pointing to the right, I golf right-handed; if it's pointed to the left, I golf left-handed." A guy asked "what if it's pointed straight up?" She said "Then I'll be here at nine o'clock."
