We absolutely felt they were the perfect fit for our cover as we want to highlight people and businesses that capture the true essence of Surrey. They are well established and in the process of growing and expanding. Stay tuned for more information about their new location in the near future. Surrey's Community Foundation Celebrates 25 Years We hope you'll help us celebrate our 25th year serving the community of Surrey! Established in 1994, Surrey has Francisca and Edwin Darts to thank for seeding our very own community foundation. The Darts created a trust for the land to be preserved as a
botanical garden and an endowment fund to ensure the garden would be maintained in the way they envisioned. They wanted to make sure that the stunningly beautiful Darts Hill Garden Park they created could be enjoyed for generations to come.
Original endowment of $200,000 now stands at $4 million With our management, Francisca and Edwin Dart's legacy will provide an estimated $4 million in interest over the next 25 years, monies that will finance improvements and upkeep in the garden. Their original investment is still intact, and yet their gift will continue for many generations.
Community foundations help guide volunteer efforts and financial support to where it will have the greatest impact. Community knowledge gives us a deeper understanding of the wellbeing of our community and fosters collaboration with others. It is at the heart of our work. SurreyCares Community Foundation helps donors make a positive difference in our community, and in the lives of the people who live here.
SurreyCares provides several ways to help you improve the lives of others in our community. We have both investment and community expertise to help you direct your charitable giving. We connect donor passions with community needs to have a significant and long-term impact. We work with donors from all walks of life; individuals, families, registered charities and corporations. We can help you today and into the future.
Surrey - a giving, connected community We inspire donors, grow endowments and invest in people Each year in March, SurreyCares Community Foundation opens grant applications to qualified applicants. Registered charitable organizations who are based in Surrey or who's work benefits the residents of Surrey are eligible to apply for a grant from SurreyCares Community Foundation.
Areas supported by these grants include:Â Supporting individuals with special needs, youth initiatives, arts & culture, education & literacy, heritage, successful integration of immigrants into Surrey society, the environment, and seniors.
Here's what one grant recipient said last year:
"
We couldn’t run the program the way we do without our outside community partners, and SurreyCares is one of them for sure. Their support of our program has been huge.

How to build a LEGACY: How Will History Remember You? By Anthony & Lisa Alexis “The drive and energy to discover our significance and achieve our life’s purpose is the greatest untapped resource of our time.” In today’s age of social media, instant messaging, instant streaming entertainment, and overnight viral celebrity, it can be very difficult to sell people on the idea of legacy and long-term impact. Yet in our life-coaching practice, Lisa and I have not talked to a single healthy minded client who wants to wander aimlessly through life without purpose, and nobody wants to die and be quickly forgotten without having accomplished anything of significance for either themselves or others.
There are two fundamental ways we commonly express our healthy desire for significance: Passionate SELF-EXPRESSION, and GENEROSITY towards others. SELF-EXPRESSION is exemplified in the massive market for luxury goods and services, and once-ina-lifetime luxury experiences. We frequently want to prove we are significant by what we can achieve, experience or possess. The Success Rail was created to quickly identify your most common DERAILER. Take the quiz today at www.thesuccessrail.com
On the flip side, our quest for significance in GENEROSITY is exemplified in the proliferation of social enterprises like TOMS Shoes, who partnered with their customers to give away over 60 million pairs of shoes in 10 years. That is lasting impact through generosity. We have the most fun when our clients are inspired to achieve their own legacy-based projects to create a fulfilled life and multi-generational impact.
We believe the world can handle a near INFINITE number of “social enterprises.” Every person can be a social enterprise for good, and our mental and emotional well-being actually depends on it. Achieving success and having status symbols without meaningful connections to others and without a plan for sustainable generosity is a recipe for depression from a lack of purpose and fulfillment. Mercedes-Benz and other luxury companies are tapping into our desire for SIGNIFICANCE and SELF-EXPRESSION to sell cars and other luxury items, but they are frequently missing the legacy-driven generosity piece which is a dead end. You must COMPLETE the circle of achievement with a generous and impactful legacy that gives meaning to all your hard work, otherwise you risk feeling like you accomplished all your achievements for nothing. Trust us. We’ve been there!
You are your biggest investment and how you do anything is how you do everything. If you fail to commit to work on yourself and your mindset, that will carry over into everything you do in life.
When our energy for significance lacks the outlet of generosity energy that can be used to address society's greatest problems, we miss a deep sense of fulfillment in return. We all desire a lifestyle that fully reflects our passions and interests, but how are our leveraging our unique lifestyles to also connect with the widespread needs of this world? That’s where coaching comes in. Handling success and generosity well are each challenging on their own, let alone together. It’s actually rare amongst world-class achieving individuals to show up without a coach, so why do we show up to our life and legacy without one? It’s crucial to have an expert in your corner who can help you stay primed and focused on manifesting your ultimate desired outcome. We also celebrate unique milestones with you along the way that you may not be able to share with many people. Not everybody understands your trajectory, or your level of sacrifice like we do. We push you to continuously evolve into the greatest version of yourself, unlock and support your inner genius, and overcome roadblocks to building your greatest life. We help you learn to enjoy the process and the results! You are your biggest investment and how you do anything is how you do everything. If you fail to commit to work on yourself and your mindset, that will carry over into everything you do in life. Don’t ever settle for what is simply possible. New personal bests are achieved by otherwise ordinary people every day. When building something people believe to be impossible, you must continue reaching higher despite the challenges, despite the pain, and despite the temporary setbacks. Here’s our promise: you will experience deep personal fulfillment to the degree that you see your life as a social enterprise for good. Our lives are all allotted an undetermined amount of time, resources and energy. To avoid any regrets, our collective mission should be to leverage our achievement drive for the betterment of ourselves, our communities and the world around us- this is where we find our most powerful and aligned sense of significance, meaning, legacy and connection.
Anthony and Lisa Alexis Life Coaches at LIFESTORY PEAK PERFORMANCE CONSULTING www.lifestoryconsulting.com As life coaches, our desire is to help people discover the desire to what drives them and align their values with their lifestyle for maximum impact, fulfilment and legacy.

An interview with Julie Redlin, R.M.T. Owner of Julie Redlin’s Massage Therapy Clinic in Guildford, Surrey Questions by Rina Gill.
How long has your massage therapy clinic been in Guildford? I originally opened my clinic in 1992 in Fleetwood. I was the first massage therapist in the area and I was instantly busy. I have now been in Guildford for 16 years. This totals 27 years that my clinic has been in operation.
What types of massage therapy are offered at your clinic? Our therapist use a variety of effective techniques. To name a few, we offer trigger point release, fascia work, Swedish massage, active and passive stretches, neuromuscular therapy, pregnancy massage and hot/cold therapeutic stone massage.
Are you located near Guildford mall? Yes, we are approximately two blocks east of Guildford mall. We are located inside a multi-disciplinary clinic that offers physiotherapy, kinesiology, certified hand therapists, and acupuncture. Julie Redlin’s Massage Therapy clinic operates INSIDE of this multidisciplinary clinic called Health One.
What are some of the conditions that can benefit from massage therapy? Massage therapy is excellent for headaches, migraines, computer related muscle strain, insomnia related to stress, ligament sprains, muscle strains, sports injuries, TMJ (jaw pain), fibromyalgia, digestive orders, anxiety, tendinitis, osteoarthritis, whiplash, scar tissue management, postural education, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff problems, and so much more.
That is an interesting set up. I would imagine it allows a comprehensive approach to healthcare with so many health services under one roof. It is an excellent set up. I have my own separate identity with my own booking system and phone number. I am essentially renting space off of this clinic and operating independently, all the while cross referring patients and working as a team. How many massage therapist work for Julie Redlin’s Massage Therapy Clinic? Including myself I have three Registered Massage Therapists. Julie Redlin, RMT, Kerry Marion, RMT, and Shannon McDougall, RMT. I also have one student massage therapist who has just completed her schooling to be a RMT. She is waiting to write her board exams to become fully licensed. She is working one day a week right now at a reduced rate of $65 an hour that is not claimable on extended health until she is registered. It’s a great way for patients who do not have coverage to get an excellent massage. Would you describe your treatment room as spa-like or medical? Both actually! It is spacious with vaulted ceilings and a skylight. It has a breezy tropical feel. We have one wall covered in a mural of Fiji and you will find seashells and sea glass in the room. It also definitely has a medical feel with various trigger point charts on the wall. It’s the best of both worlds.

SURREY HEALTH MAGAZINE MARCH 2019
I would imagine computer related strain is very prevalent right now. We treat somebody with computer related strain injuries every day. People are really not aware of how critical their computer set up and sitting position is. Improper set ups lead to back pain, neck pain, headaches, wrist pain, shoulder pain etc. In speaking with our patients and discussing their pain we play “detective” and figure out what needs to be changed in their work set up so the pain does not just keep coming back. Do you see a lot of people coming in because their neck is sore from looking down texting? Again, every day I see somebody that has a sore neck and headaches from texting. Not to mention sore thumbs. Everyday I go out in the waiting room and every single person has their head down looking at their phone. The human head weighs about 10 to 15 pounds and when you tip it forward the amount of strain on the muscles in the back of the neck is alarming. For example tipping your head forward only 15° equates to 27 pounds of pressure on the muscles in the back of the neck. Most of us tip our head forward 45° when looking at our phones this is equivalent to 49 pounds of pressure on muscles at the back of the neck. 60° of neck flexion equals 60 pounds of pressure on the muscles. No wonder everybody is sore! Massage therapy helps to loosen up those muscles and teach you different ways to look at your phone.
I would imagine texting pain is affecting children as well as adults. Last week I had a six-year-old in my office who was off school because of having headaches. Many hours of the day his head is hanging down looking at videos on a cell phone and also gaming on it. It is an epidemic and there is much education that needs to be done to school-age children. I have never heard of hot and cold stone massage. Can you describe that please, it sounds interesting. I began using hot/cold stones in a therapeutic massage about 15 years ago. Now I am instructing other RMT’s in the technique by offering continuing education courses. Hot stones help to dilate the blood vessels drawing fresh blood into the tight muscles. This is essential for loosening the tissue and reducing the pain a patient feels. In a particularly tight area we may alternate with a cold stone which again greatly increases circulation. The cold stone constricts the blood vessels and pushes back out the fresh blood, oxygen etc. and along with it waste products that build up in tight muscles. We continue to alternate back-and-forth all the while doing the massage with the stones in our hands. This acts like a pump flushing out the tight muscle thus softening and loosening it. If you think a cool stone sounds unpleasant I can promise you I have a technique where I apply a hot one on at the same time and you don’t even feel the cool one. I’ve only ever seen hot stones placed on somebody’s back like in those spa ads. So this is different? Yes this is very different. We are actually holding the hot and/ or a cool stone and doing a deep therapeutic massage with it in our hands. You also mentioned that you do pregnancy massage. How does a pregnant lady lie on the table? The massage therapist will discuss with the pregnant client how she has been feeling, what is the most comfortable sleeping position, how the pregnancy is going, if it’s a high risk pregnancy and then together they will discuss the best position for the client on the table. We have these great pregnancy specific cushions that let someone lie on their stomach even in the 2nd and 3rd term of their pregnancy. These body cushions made of dense foam have a circular indentation in the middle where the baby and belly are nicely cradled and the body is cushioned without putting strain on the client’s back. These pregnancy cushions are definitely a favourite with our pregnant clients. What is the benefit to a pregnant lady receiving massage therapy? As the baby grows, the belly becomes heavier and stretched, this can add pressure to organs, ribs and strain on back muscles especially the low back. Pregnant women often experience ligaments stretching and pelvic pain. The muscles in the thighs, pelvis, back and buttocks can become sore and taut as they try to stabilize. The heavier the baby gets the more changes to her posture as gravity pulls her forward, this increases tension on the muscles. Massage therapy can be a great aide in relieving sore muscles and ligament pain, re-
ducing stress, reducing swelling in feet and ankles, as well as relieving pregnancy induced carpal tunnel. Are there any risks to having a massage therapy treatment when pregnant? Before we treat a pregnant lady we thoroughly discuss how their pregnancy is going. We talk about any complications they have had, if they are high risk, past pregnancies etc... It is perfectly safe to have a massage therapy treatment after discussing your health history and pregnancy with your massage therapist. As massage therapists we will be honest with you if we feel it would be unsafe for you to have a treatment or if we need more information or clearance from your doctor and/or midwife we will ask them. Each treatment is discussed and modified to each individual client for the best therapeutic outcome. Do you find most of your patients have extended health benefits at work? Yes many patients do have good coverage through their extended health. However not everybody utilizes their coverage. I have seen many patients that have had coverage for 10 or 20 years and have never had any type of treatment and yet they have back or neck pain. What are your rates for massage therapy at your office? A 30 minute treatment is $62 A 45 minute treatment is $89 A 60 minute treatment is $110. The rates are the same whether you are having deep tissue massage or hot/cold therapeutic stone massage. Our non-registered massage therapist Victoria has different rates until she becomes a RMT. You can enjoy an excellent Swedish massage at the following rates: 30 min massage = $40 45 min massage = $50 60 min massage = $65

Shifting Your Health Paradigm
By Didar Grewal Chiropractic Intern
Medicine is the study of disease and what causes man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes man to live”. BJ Palmer
T
his quote from one of Chiropractic’s founding fathers would mean nothing to me 5-6 years ago, I had very little knowledge of the world of chiropractic. This was due to the fact that I was raised on medicine, where I always went to my medical doctor for every concern I had. My health history is quite extensive, I’ve had asthma and allergies from a very young age. As a teenager I also was hospitalized with pneumonia, twice. As you can imagine I was taking medication as a preventative measure for many years, both for my asthma and allergic reactions. To add to this, I was playing basketball year round for Tamanawis Secondary in Surrey. Unfortunately the rigorous training schedule did not help my health. As my physical health deteriorated I became more and more interested in learning about taking care of my body, which eventually led me to pursue exercise science. In 2015 I received my Bachelors in Human Kinetics which is the study of human movement, from the University of British Columbia. I was first introduced to chiropractic during my time at UBC.
For years I was searching for a career I was passionate about, after learning about chiropractic I knew it was the field for me. As of March 2019, I am officially a Doctor of Chiropractic, received from Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California. When something hurts, aches, or just doesn’t feel right, we go to a professional to receive a diagnosis and get treatment. Treatment is usually external to the body like a pill, which relieves the symptoms. This model will not negatively impact you in anyway because when done correctly relief is almost immediate. However, relying on external means of treatment does not allow the body to heal from within. Currently we are stuck in this type of health model, called the pathogenic model. The contrary to pathogenesis is salutogenesis, where the focus is on facilitating optimal human health and wellness. With the help of chiropractic care, your intelligent body has the opportunity to restore normal health internally before you have to rely on external treatment. When coming in to my practice we will be focused not only on your primary concerns but your overall health and wellness. The chiropractic adjustment is designed to facilitate optimal health by allowing you to better adapt and address all the stressors life throws your way. These stresses can be emotional, physical, or chemical. Everyone encounters these 3 stressors but when we have too much emotional stress or too much physical trauma or we ingest to many of the wrong toxins our body begins to deteriorate and goes into the direction of pathology.
Your spine is a highly sophisticated structure made to protect the vital spinal cord and the nerves that sit within it. Every single cell, muscle tissue, and organ in your body relies on the spinal cord to relay messages to your brain at faster-than-lightning speeds. Spinal misalignments impede this performance. Coming into my office you will receive precise chiropractic adjustments which address misalignments in the spine.Chiropractic adjustments of the spine allow the body to adapt all stressors thrown at it. Adequate alignment of the spine allows for normal input and output from the body to the brain and vice versa. I have been receiving chiropractic adjustments regularly for the last 3 years. The benefits from these adjustments have been incredible. I have seen improvements in all aspects of my life. Physically I have never felt better, the visits to the medical doctor have reduced, and my usage of medicine has also seen a large decrease. My goal within the upcoming months is to ensure a greater amount of our Surrey population get under chiropractic care. I want people to start focusing on wellness and prevention before the disease or injury process even begins. With the use of precise, specific, and light adjustments, together we will achieve whole health. I will be practicing in South Surrey come Summer 2019, Make sure to follow my journey on Instagram @d.grewalchiropractic. Any questions or concerns can be forwarded to my Instagram or email dgrewal@college.lifewest.edu.

Tell us about Surrey Natural Foods? Surrey Natural Foods is Surrey’s first health food store. Established in 1974 the store was owned by Mrs Ann Wallace until 2001 when Mr Terry Dingman took over. He operated it till 2011 when he passed away. In 2011, my family purchased the store and have continued to run it till now. The original owner, Ann passed away last year at the ripe age of 95. I hope to beat her record. What inspired you to get into the Natural Health industry? My family has been active in the field of natural health for many years. We have researched countless products and health protocols over this time to see which ones are effective and which are not. When the store became available we jumped at the opportunity to put our knowledge and experience into practice. It has been a challenge to absorb the tremendous amount of information available and to provide our customers with useful information. How has your store and business evolved in order to keep up with the industry? I don’t like to jump on the band wagon every time a new product or health fad comes out. I like to learn about it first to see if there really is a health benefit. My best teachers are my customers. They tell me what works for them. Besides them my favourite resources are books and the internet.. The problem with the internet is that there is more information than one can absorb in even ten life times. People get confused because of all the different opinions out there. I have spent well over 10,000 hours in the past 8 years reading and researching and then trying different things on myself and/or my customers. I operate on the principle that in order to succeed at something you firstly have to learn how not to do it. Eventually you will succeed.

SURREY HEALTH MAGAZINE MARCH 2019
What are the common types of health issues customers complain about? Our customers’ health problems are all over the map from minor issues to those of the life-threatening type. While we never claim to have all of the answers we are for the most part able to at least steer them in the right direction. We don’t get sick overnight. Rather our health gradually deteriorates. So it’s important to help them realize that the road back to health takes time. People often want something that will make them better immediately but for most of us it will take time. There are times when the customer hesitates or doesn’t believe what I am telling them. I just tell them, I don’t think you’re ready to make the necessary changes yet. You need to come back when you are sicker and ready to make the changes. I do this to try to wake them up to seriously think about what they need to do. What do you recommend to your customers in order to stay healthy? I tell them to take care of the basics: 1. Breathe good clean air and breathe it deeply. The best air is either on the seashore or in a forest. Go and breathe as often as you can. Remember, air is free. 2. Drink clean purified water every day. That includes things such as herbal teas with medicinal qualities. 3. Take care of your digestive tract by eating healthful foods in as much variety as possible. 4. Get plenty of exercise. Walk, run and swim every day. 5. These four matters will set up a good foundation upon which you can build a healthy life. Tell us about some of your most popular products? I love the tried and true products that have stood the test of time for gut health I recommend probiotics. My favourite one is Vita Biosa, a fermented probiotic. Along with pro-
biotics we need an adequate intake of fiber. My favourite is called Nutracleanse. The third supplement for gut health is a digestive enzyme. My personal favourite is called Ultragest. For general health I recommend Vitamin C to almost everyone and vitamin D, especially during the winter months. Along with this I use spirulina which is a natural source of almost all the nutrients our body needs. Spirulina is nature’s perfect food. What are your thoughts about all the trendy fad diets out there like, Keto, Paleo and Alkaline etc.? Many fad diets are designed to separate you from your hard-earned money. Before investing in a health program do your research by talking to your family and friends to see if anyone has had any benefit. There is also a lot of good information on the internet. Remember though, that there is a lot of misinformation out there too. For example, the pharmaceutical industry would like nothing better than to have their customers on as many drugs as possible. The dairy industry would like you to eat and drink nothing but cheese, milk and ice cream. The supplement industry would like you to take handfuls of their products every day. Each one of us is different. We need to find what works for us. This takes a lot of trial and error. Remember, if you do nothing about your health expect to lose it. If you make small incremental changes that you can continue to do for the rest of your life you can expect to live well over one hundred. My personal goal is to live at least to 120. I am a little over half way there and I’m getting stronger and happier and more excited about life the longer I live.

Vitamin D: A.k.a - Vitamin Happy! Everyone can benefit from a healthy dose of Vitamin “happy” during the winter months. A lack of sunshine is not the only reason behind our increased need for Vitamin D. We also need this multi-action vitamin for: - Proper delivery of Calcium into the bones - Immune supportive benefits - Functioning of healthy Thyroid gland - Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes, cancer and autoimmune diseases - Mood elevation, food sources include: fish, butter, egg yolks and cheese Probiotics: Microorganisms of various strains and species spread throughout your entire body. Used to reestablish healthy gut flora. Benefits are: - Supports Immune system - Decreases, eliminates and prevents bad bacterial growth (candida/yeast) - Supports proper functioning of the GI tract - aids digestion,
relieves bloating and constipation/diarrhea - Helps minimize or eliminate skin conditions such as eczema, acne and redness - Certain types of strains are specific to helping with weight management (bacteroidetes and fermicutes), allergies and food sensitivities - Helps in the prevention of h.pylori, bacterial vaginosis and other bacterial conditions Food sources of probiotics include: fermented foods like sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, yogurt and kefir. Unfortunately, if there is a known bacterial imbalance such as candida or digestive problems, food sources alone may not be effective in treating those conditions. A diet rich in fibre, minerals and fermented foods along with a probiotic supplement as shown above are highly recommended. Fish Oil: Often derived from sources such as mackerel, sardines, anchovies and cod. These provide beneficial essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and support overall health and well being. Fish Oil aids in aids in various functions such as brain, eyes, teeth, hair, skin and nail health. It also works on hormonal and digestive balance and helps reduce overall inflammation, especially joints.
Food sources are fish of course, however you need to be careful of sourcing and heavy metal toxicity. Fish oils are highly tested for quality and ethical fishing as to not harm ecosystems. Liquid form is better absorbed (and often flavoured) but there are also softgels available. Quick tip: oils are best blended in smoothies for great taste and bioavailablity with other macronutrients. Taken on an empty stomach is not recommended.
- Supporting energy levels, blood sugar, immune system and detoxification pathways - Better absorbed in a whole food complex (greens powder) rather than a standard multivitamin
Minerals: These are the foundation of our bodies. There are at least 12 minerals present in every cell of our bodies that need to be replenished daily in order to fulfill primary functions such as: - Your heart beat which needs magnesium and iron phosphate to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your cells. - Proper hydration balance from potassium, sodium and other electrolytes. - Production of stomach acid - Nerve function and transmission efficiency - Cellular energy (mitochondrial support) bringing overall energy to the body - Metabolism regulation - The list could go on! Without minerals and trace minerals, many of the bodies daily functions become compromised, leading to numerous health problems such as dehydration, dry skin, blood sugar imbalances, diabetes and a weak immune system. Food sources: Organic, raw fruits and vegetables, herbs and grass fed butter Minerals suspended in a colloidal preparation in liquid or naturally occurring in zeolite or fulvic acid (mineral powders) can easily be added to water. My personal favourite is concentrace, seen below.
Food sources: Organic fresh greens offer the same benefits. However, you would need to consume high amounts of organic greens everyday to ensure you’ll reap the rewards (4-6 servings). With our busy lives, sometimes this isn’t always sustainable. Whenever someone is feeling like they need a boost in their overall health, I’m quick to recommend a greens blend over a multivitamin any day! There are plenty of forms to take it in; liquid, powder, capsules or tablets. You can even buy it frozen to add to fresh juices! These are my top supplement recommendations that I hope will serve your health needs! Make sure to consult with a health professional for more information. You may be advised to seek medical advice if taking medication as to avoid any contraindications. Most importantly, enjoy your journey towards a healthier you!
- Greens: a superfood complex from various sources of greens in vegetables, herbs and algae. Greens are a nutrient dense staple to enhance anyone’s overall health. They support our bodies by: - Creating an alkaline environment for our probiotics to proliferate and reducing in oxidative stress/inflammation. - Acting as a source of insoluble fibre, antioxidants and concentrated vitamins and minerals that can be hard to obtain from diet alone

e may be rightly called as the ‘messiah’ for those who are suffering from the harrowing repercussions of being obese, for obesity is not just a disease in itself but also gives way to many other diseases. While a controlled diet and exercise can work well in some cases, but there comes a time when either your will power gives up or your body just stops responding to anymore efforts. What can you do in such a case? Don’t you worry! We have Dr Gurvinder Singh Jammu, a visionary and an innovative doctor, whose determination to rescue people from the clutches of obesity, led to the inception of Jammu Hospital in Jalandhar. Jammu Hospital provides a perfect solution to you in the name of “Bariatric or Metabolic Surgery”, and this is the first hospital in Punjab to provide BARIATRIC surgery under all kinds of high-tech modern equipments and facilities. Doctor Jammu did his graduation (MBBS) in 1991 and Masters in Surgery (MS) from Dayanand Medical College & Hospital Ludhiana in 1995 and also served as the chief surgeon of the Guru Nanak Mission (GNM) hospital, Jalandhar before founding his own hospital. He has an experience of more than 25 thousand laparoscopic, general and cancer surgeries to his credit. According to Dr Jammu, Bariatric or weight-loss surgery should be performed on those patients who are unable to treat obesity through a good diet and exercise regime. “If your BMI is greater than 30 and you no more can lose the extra kilos with a healthy diet and exercise, then this surgery is a good option for you. The biggest advantage of under-going the Bariatric surgery is that, in the process, a lot of other problems resulting out of obesity, like, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart ailments, Kidney problems, Snoring etc, get cured too,” he says. “Bariatric surgery limits the amount of food you can take in. Many people who have the surgery lose weight quickly. If you follow diet and exercise recommendations, you can keep most of the weight off,” adds the noble doctor. The Jammu Hospital at a glance: With state-of-the-art facilities, Jammu hospital is a multi-specialty hospital that has four Operation Theatres well equipped with Ventilators, Central Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide and Vacuum, latest Multi-parameter Monitors and Defibrillators, and the most-modern equipments for surgical procedures. From the routine laparoscopic surgeries like, Gall bladder stones, Apendix, Ovarian Cyst, Tubal Patency, Pancreatic laparoscopy, etc. to the most advanced ones like Bariatric Surgery, Metabolic Surgery for Type II Diabetes, Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Thoracoscopy, Nephrectomy and Intestinal Surgery, the hospital provides treatments for all.
The best part is that in case of advanced surgeries like Bariatric Surgery, the patients are also provided with pre-surgical psycho-counseling wherein they’re taught about the post-operation lifestyle they must adhere to. “Since we provide the facilities that conform to the international standards, therefore, a large percentage of the patients visiting our hospital are either from Metropolitan cities or from the countries like US, UK, Italy and other European countries. The Bariatric surgery cost in India is much cheaper than the western countries and this fact alone, helps a great deal in promoting the medical tourism in our country,” enlightens Doctor Jammu, who is also, a member in good standing, at International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists, and Oncologists- IASGO.
The Achievements * Jammu hospital, under the aegis of Dr Jammu, has achieved the feat of becoming the first hospital in North India to start SILS (Single Incision Laparoscopic surgery), and NOTUS (Natural Orifice Trans Umblical Surgery). Along with this, the hospital also holds the honour of being the first hospital in North India to acquire the most advanced Visual System for Advance Laparoscopic procedures, i.e. HIGH DEFINITION SYSTEM by Karl Storz, Germany. * The Director and the Head, Doctor Gurvinder Singh Jammu himself, is a dynamic and self-motivated individual who has been honoured with a number of awards and accolades at both the national and international level. Besides being the member of prestigious international medical organizations, like, SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons), ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons), he’s also been instrumental at organizing live Laparoscopic workshops (the first of its kind in Jalandhar) in the Jammu Hospital. A ‘Healthy’ Piece of Advice: According to Doctor Jammu, the part of India that’s suffering the most from the obesity-epidemic is Punjab with having 35 percent of the population, obese. Though in 40% of the cases, the reasons tend to be genetic, but in the remaining, it’s all due to the erratic lifestyles that the people of this region have got themselves accustomed to. “Alcoholism, fast food culture and lack of physical activity and stress, all contribute towards obesity. Diet-control followed by healthy exercise regime is a ‘must’ in case you want to curb obesity in its earlier stages, however, beyond a certain point, no amount of dieting and exercising can stop the occurrence of obesity. In such cases, going for a life-saving surgery like, Bariatric surgery becomes an absolute must if you want to lead the rest of your life disease-free,” says, Doctor Jammu.
Does Bariatric Surgery remove all fat from the body?
What are the types of Bariatric surgery?
Not a single gram of fat is removed or liposuction is done in bariatric surgery. It is based on the principle of restriction of food and less absorption of food.
Bariatric surgery is a type of procedure performed on people who are obese for the purpose of losing weight. It refers to the various procedures perform to treat obesity by modification of gastrointestinal tract to reduce nutrient intake and absorption. Before you decide to go for bariatric surgery you must know which procedure suits you as there are different types of surgical procedures which include: • Mini Gastric Bypass • Gastric By Pass • Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Resection • Laparoscopic Gastric Banding • Duodenal Switch • Ileal Interposition • Endo Liner
Is Bariatric Surgery a cosmetic surgery? This surgery not only reduces your over weight but also helps in the resolution of your comorbidities like Type II Diabetes Mellitus, High Cholesterol, Snoring, Sleep Apnea, Joint Pain, PCOD and Fatty Liver Disease. So, this is not a cosmetic but a ‘life saving surgery’.
When is Bariatric Surgery recommended?
What is Obesity or Morbid Obesity?
Who will benefit from Bariatric Surgery?
Obesity is considered a health “condition”. A person is considered “obese” when he or she weighs 20% or more than his or her ideal body weight. At that point, the person’s weight poses a real health risk. Obesity becomes “morbid” when it significantly increases the risk of one or more obesity related health conditions or serious diseases. Morbid obesity, sometimes called “clinically severe obesity” is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
People with Diabetes Mellitus, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, High Blood Cholesterol, Asthma, Respiratory Insufficiency, Sleep Apnea Syndrome, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, Gallbladder Disease, Stress Urinary Incontinence, Low Back Pain, Degenerative Disk Disease & Degenerative Joint Disease.
Bariatric surgery is major life-changing procedures. It can help reduce your risk of weight-related health problems. It increases your life expectancy. Bariatric surgery could be an option for you if: • Your BMI is 30 or more then 30 without any medical problem. (IDF guidelines for Asian’s) • Your BMI is 27.5 with medical problems like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure etc. • Efforts to lose weight with diet and exercise have been unsuccessful. • You are unable to perform routine activity in your day to day life due to overweight.
These surgical procedures are major gastrointestinal operations that work on the principles: • To bypass most of the stomach to reduce the amount of food one can eat. • To rearrange the small intestine so as reduce the calories the body can absorb.
At what age you can undergo Bariatric surgery? Age is not the bar for bariatric surgery, as it improves the longevity and quality of life. There are different surgical procedures for different age group. There are bariatric surgery procedures which are done in younger age group like children < 18, adults & old age.
Renu Mishra weighed a mighty 115kg when she first visited Dr. Jammu. Within a few months, she underwent the Bariatric Surgery, her body weight slipped down to 80kg and today, after a year, she’s a bright and cheerful woman with a high self esteem, weighing just 70kg.

few months ago, I embarked on a low net carb regime. Some colleagues are following a more strict Ketogenic plan, which I will test soon and give some feedback on this, but for this first two weeks, I knew a lower carb plan; net carbs of maximum 50 per day, is what I could reasonably manage, given my husband I had 4 day getaway planned at a resort in the interior of BC. If you’ve read previous blog posts on https://foreverfit.today, you know I am not about any specific dietary regime as a rule of thumb, which ends up putting pretty strict lines around what you eat and does strange things to our mindset. Disordered eating is very prevalent and I don’t want to encourage that with my clients. This is what we know about carbohydrates: we have simple and complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs are whole grains and whole foods with a high fibre content. They digest more slowly due to the fibre and therefore don’t spike blood sugar. The Glycemic Load is ideally low. Simple carbs are processed and refined flour products, some fruits and pure sugar. The simple carbs digest quickly and are used by the body as a primary source of fuel. Glycemic Load is generally high. Excess sugar is stored in the muscle but also as fat. The pancreas and liver work together to do the balancing act of keeping blood sugar levels balanced in the body and keep us in a relatively happy, healthy state. The net carbohydrate count of many foods, even healthy ones, can be relatively high – take steel cut oats for example. A net carb amount of 27 for ¼ cup of oats. Add to that any sweetener; fruit, sugar or maple syrup and it goes up considerably. According to Macronutrient guidelines carbs should provide 45 to 65 percent of your daily calorie intake. So if you eat a 2000-calorie diet, you should aim for about 225 to 325 grams of carbs per day. But if you need to lose weight, you will get much faster results eating around 50 to 150 grams of carbs. So you can easily see how fast these numbers can add up if you’re not paying attention. I personally would consume much less – around 168-243g. The obvious sugary high carb things are easy to avoid. It’s the foods where we think we’re eating something healthy and simply not checking the numbers. I also know physiologically that with toxins in our environment, overuse of alcohol and other
substances and high stress levels for a lot of people, our hard working liver and pancreas have a harder time keeping up, along with other components of our metabolism, so our ability to use these carbs efficiently gets impaired. After 10 days in, this is what I (and my hubby who happily joined me in this) learned: The exercise of measuring and tracking my food intake for one month is showing me real numbers that I had gotten out of touch with. I do recommend this to my clients for a week or two as my husband, who is a scientist, has always said the credo of science is “You can’t manage what you don’t measure”. I don’t intend to continue to measure after the month but use my new awareness to make more mindful choices. I feel lighter and leaner, my weight and my percent body fat have both dropped by a few pounds and percentage points. My brain feels more switched on and my energy, which is generally quite good, has gone up a notch. All positive things. We are all unique and there is never a one size fits all approach, but learning more about your body and the food you feed it is always a good thing.

ife will not simply hand you something because you earned it, you have to work hard and fight harder to get what you deserve. After successfully graduating from a local high school, I went straight into university. My first year there was spent trying to discover myself and find something that really intrigued me. There was a lot of pressure to pursue medicine, however my heart was not set on it. I wanted to be my own boss. I was not interested in receiving regular paycheques. I wanted to leave my mark in this world, and now I am working my way towards doing just that.
High school had given me an illusion about how the adult life would be. I thought it would be more freedom and independence. In way I was right but wrong about this theory. I achieved more freedom when my mind was developed in the classes I took, and I gained independence when I had nobody to hold my hand throughout the process. Coming from high school and into university was a huge jump. I had less time now for a social life and everything seemed to focus around “building a future, I had soon forgotten how to live in the present. Second year university and I had started to finally pull myself together. I started to take classes like Philosophy, English, and Psychology and realized that I wanted to become a teacher. The one and only thing that always bothered me was that the rest of my life I would be having to rely on a bi-weekly or monthly pay cheque. I wanted to be my own boss and just couldn’t figure out how.
It was hard enough that I had to start planning on how to accomplish my teaching goals and started to feel empty again. It is very easy to say, “I want to start my own business”, but it was just as hard to do it. I couldn’t figure out what kind of business, how I’m going to do it, where it was going to be located or who was going to help me. I didn’t want to use my parent’s money for this because I wanted it to be solely my business. I wanted to take full pride in it. Therefore, I decided to start with something like lashes. Knowing that I wanted to start with lashes was only going to solve half my problems though. I registered myself in the lash technician course and took the classes. Throughout the course I felt very vulnerable. I had no idea how to do any of this because I had never even worn a pair of false lashes before. The instructor began to feel that I wanted to quit, however she didn’t let me. She mentored me and assisted me when I thought I didn’t have it in me. I was instilled with patience and grace. Patience to add one extensions lash to every lash of the individual.

After I had successfully gotten my certification, there were clients that had to be serviced right away. This was the ultimate dream of any owner of a start-up business. I found myself extremely busy and overwhelmed as we were in the process of moving houses, school stress and I also had another part time job as well. My life consisted of running around and getting things done. I had to be in so many places and there were only 24 hours in a day to accomplish everything. This is how I understood the life and role of a business woman. My goal now it to ensure that every client walks away with a smile, not just because I wanted them to enjoy my lash services, but I also wanted to connect with people. I always believe that if you listen closely enough, there is something valuable to learn from every individual. Being at such an early and fresh start of my business, I knew I had to offer more than a physical service. One thing I always keep in mind whenever a client walks in is “what can I do to blow this person away?” While I do the clients lashes I talk and I listen. I make a relationship with whoever my client is. Customer service is the biggest part of any growing business because word or mouth that travels faster than any social media site. I aspire to continue learning about my own business every day. I know that it will not be easy and there will be rocky turns, steeps mountains, stormy days, however the end destination is always worth it.

Have you prepared for your marriage? By Arv K. Grewal “Happily Ever After” …what does that mean? When I ask couples about their wedding, they begin to tell me about the wedding venue, what they are planning to wear, what the colour scheme is, etc. When I ask them about their marriage, they look at me in confusion. The truth is that a couple’s marital life is comprised of two parts: The Wedding (Day 1) and The Marriage (Day 2 onwards). It is a well-known fact that couples spend considerable time and money so that their wedding day is planned out perfectly and no problem arises to ruin the day. They dream of a happy, joyous wedding leading to a happy, joyous marriage…and this is how it should be. However, the question that comes to mind is, “have they discussed how to have the happy, joyous marriage?” The reality is that most couples spend considerabletime discussing and planning their wedding, but do not spend time discussing and planning their marriage. A marriage is a union of two different individuals with two distinct pasts. After these two individuals get married, they will have to find a way to blend their individuality to form a foundation that will carry them through their remaining lives together. Couples may find that their decision to discuss their
marriage is well-intended but may find that communicating their thoughts and views is difficult. Afterall, it is not the norm to question each other on views on money, chores, etc. It is easier and more fun to plan the wedding. Therefore, couples, many times with the help of their parents, spend lavish amount of money on the wedding and put little time, money, and effort on the marriage. However, this does not have to be the case. Preparing for your marriage can be fun too. Discussing each other’s likes, dislikes, similarities, and differences can be done in a relaxed, interactive, and fun atmosphere. This will help couples understand each other’s thoughts, opinions, and patterns of behaving that they learned during their upbringing, in their family of origin. It is not only important to recognize how your family of origin has shaped your thoughts and opinions but how these will impact your views on different areas of your marriage. Most couple’s do not go into marriage realizing their partner’s views and beliefs and are shocked that their partner does not agree with them. Usually this awareness of the difference in beliefs only becomes apparent when it becomes an issue between the couple. Couples should be proactive and talk about their values, beliefs, and views of a healthy marriage prior to their wedding. Some areas of discussion will require less work whereas other areas may take considerable time or need help from a professional. Money is known to be the reason for
most disagreements within couples, whether dating, engaged, or married. Next to finances, household chores are another area of conflict faced by most couples. These topics, among other marriage-related topics, can be shared with your partner through discussion. Discussion!!...discussion means communication and communication can be hard. Unless one has taken effective communication training, it can be hard to know how to communicate what you are thinking and/ or feeling. Many factors can affect communication between partners, such as respect versus disrespect or talking versus listening. Couples who are having difficulty communicating with each other do not need to despair because effective communication can be learned. There are many skills that can be learned to help couples relate their thoughts and desires to each other. They can either have these discussions on their own, or they can enrol in a marital education course. The purpose of a marital education course is to provide instruction, resources, skills, and to support couples who are considering marriage. Couples who participate in these courses tend to communicate better, solve problems more effectively, and report better relationships than those couples who did not have an opportunity to attend such a course. In short, marital education strengthens the foundation for a stronger marriage. Being prepared for the reality and challenges of married life helps build a strong foundation to deal with situations that arise post-marriage. With divorce rates around 40% in Canada and 50% in the U.S., many couples are deciding to become better prepared for the reality and challenges that come after getting married. Some people or communities might worry that taking a marital education course may cause a couple to not go through the marriage, due to incompatibility. This is not the role of marital education courses. Marital education is a method to help couples think about their experiences, wishes, desires, and share them with their partner. The course is designed to assist partners in understanding each other, discussing differences in opinion, and come to a comxsWpromise that satisfies both partners, or seek professional help, if needed. Unfortunately, there has not been a pre-marital education course geared to the South Asian community. Therefore, I have developed a structured, interactive course for this community. It incorporates the collective values of the South Asian community, as well the western community. The pre-marital education program will consist of 4 2.5 hours sessions, or a weekend intensive. For further information, please email grewal.arv@gmail.com.
How to speak so your spouse will listen? The following rules will help in communicating with your spouse: 1. Be sure your spouse is listening. Check to make sure your
spouse is not too angry or distracted. Generally, it is advisable to actively check out your spouse’s readiness by asking, “Can you listen to me now?”
2. Begin with something positive. Whenever you need to have a
serious discussion with anyone, it is always advisable to begin with something positive. Be sincere not artificial.
3. Do not attack. Attacks tend to begin with “you” statements,
such as “You are?,” “You never?,” or, “You always?” The best way to avoid attacking your spouse is to try to frame your comments using “I” statements to express your feelings.
4. Do not exaggerate. Exaggeration is one way in which we vent
our feelings when we are upset. This may relieve our inner tension but it does not do much to promote marital harmony.
5. Do not mind-read. If you assume that your assumptions of
our spouse’s motives are completely accurate, you run the risk of inflaming his temper.
6. Focus on preferences, not principles. Often spouses try to con-
vince each other that they are “right.”In order to “prove” that they are right, they often cite statistics, books and magazine articles.
They will assert that their position is “normal” or that “everyone” thinks and acts the way they do.
7. Explain what made you feel the way you did. If you do not explain, in the most specific language possible, exactly how you felt, your spouse will not understand what bothered you.
8. Clarify your needs. You will not be able to get what you want from your spouse unless you are able to articulate exactly what
your needs are, what bothers you, andwhat you would have wanted done differently.
9. Limit yourself to one or two topics. spouses sometimes find that they have accumulated a long list of complaints and grievances.
When each one finally gets his or her turn to be the speaker, (s)he often tries to address too many subjects all at once.
10. Allow time for questions at the end. It is always a good idea
to stop speaking before your spouse loses patience and allow him
or her to ask you questions. It is only through the questions of the listener that the speaker’s words are fully understood.
