Dear Readers,
Welcome to another issue of the BC South Asian Health Magazine. Even though the first few months of 2023 is for new year’s resolutions and setting goals, by the time Spring comes around many tend to fall of track. Our goal is to equip our audience with some tools to help navigate and achieve health goals both internally and externally. In this special Women’s edition, we are featuring amazing women in different provinces who are helping the community achieve their health, wellness & fitness goals.
With mental health issues consistently on the rise, there is a lot of fascination around meditation. Our feature cover story for this issue is on Malinder Kaur, who is a meditation teacher, motivational speaker, author and model. She has mastered the art of meditation and her goal is to help the community understand the multiple benefits, so that they can master it as well. Check out the article inside to learn more about Malinder’s background and what inspired her to go down this spiritual path.
Speaking of mental health, we have a special feature from Ontario SAHM on Salima Jadavji, who is the founder of Dare To Heal. She realized early in life when she was in a position to seek counselling that it was hard to find someone who understood the cultural nuances she was dealing with. Hence the reason she decided to pursue a career in this field. She now runs her own private counselling clinic and offers online courses through her website as well. Check out her article inside and visit www.daretoheal.co for more information.
Fitness is a great way to improve your overall health including mental health. In the Alberta issue, our feature cover story is on Monika Arora, Owner of Wo-Men Rock Center. She has gone through a few body transformations and this inspired her to open her own personal training fitness studio. She gained a lot of weight after giving birth to her daughter so she’s very passionate about helping women get back to their pre-pregnancy bodies. Aside from offering one-on-one training and group classes at her studio, Monika’s fitness tips can also help the community across Canada as she regularly posts health and fitness tips on her social media. We are excited to share that the BC South Asian Health Expo will be back later this year. After almost 13 years of organizing this health tradeshow for the community and publishing the health magazine, we are gearing up for a big anniversary celebration. We will also be sharing a few exciting announcements that you don’t want to miss. Stay tuned ….

Free Gang Prevention Workshops for Parents This Spring
Learn risk factors to help prevent youth gang involvement.
Surrey, B.C. – The City of Surrey is once again offering free gang prevention workshops for parents this April to May. Empower Surrey Parent Workshops are free, two-hour in-person workshops that provide parents and caregivers with tips and tools to help recognize and respond to warning signs for gang involvement, minimize the chance of gang recruitment, and provide strateg ies for building protective factors.
“Gangs target youth as young as 10 years old from all cultural and socio -economic backgrounds so getting informed early is key,” said Brian Aasebo, the City’s Community Safety Manager. “We encourage all parents and care givers to attend and learn about how to start conversations with young people and equip them with the tools they need to build resiliency and avoid the allure of gang life.”
Workshops will cover the following topics:
• How to recognize and address risk fac tors
• How to recognize youth slang that may indicate potential for risk
• How to understand grooming and its effects
• How to recognize signs of online exploitation
• The difficulties Surrey youth face at school and in the community
• How to develop strong connections and build protective factors with children and youth
• Where to get help if a young person is at risk of or actively involved in negative behaviours
Build a strong connection by starting the conversation with these tips.
Building a strong connection through meaningful conversations on tough topics is one of the most important and effective ways to protect children from gangs. However, even though both children and parents often want to discuss the same topics, they don’t know where to start.
Children want to be loved and heard without fear of judgment, comparison to others, or punishment. Successful conversations that don’t cause emotional harm, start from a safe and open place. When we go into conversations with an open mi nd and the goal of listening, children may be more willing to share.
Before starting a conversation:
• Check your own biases and fears so you can actively listen to your child.
• Accept and acknowledge your child’s feelings.
• Talk about your own emotions and feelings so you can relate to them better.
• Empower them with choices.
• Do your research and learn more if you don’t know how to help.
• Explore youth truth to learn more about tough topics.
Caregivers are invited to register for the following workshops that will take place 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.:
• Tuesday, April 11 Sullivan Heights Secondary
