special 10th anniversary issue - SPRING 2018
PUBLISHERS NOTE Welcome to the 10th Anniversary issue of the South Asian Health Magazine. The ONLY publication in the world solely dedicated to health, beauty, wellness and fitness in the South Asian community. Since launching in Surrey BC in 2011, we have been consistently organizing FREE admission trade shows for the local community as well as publishing this FREE magazine. It has not been easy but we realized that it is absolutely necessary to provide continuous health awareness, education, on-going support and resources to the South Asian community. It started off as a passion project but has now turned into a full movement! In this 10th Anniversary issue, we want to not only celebrate this major milestone but to also to share a big announcement with everyone. To get the full scoop, please read my feature cover story in the magazine. And as always, we have more quality content for your reading pleasure. Allergy season has officially arrived! So, we absolutely had to have an article about how to take the necessary precautions and cope. Also, we have a new business launching in B.C. called Nurse On The Go. You can get first dibs on the variety of services they offer and how to connect with them. Also, an organization we work very closely with called SAFA is celebrating their 15 year anniversary this year - please check out their organization profile and upcoming events. The longterm goal has always been to expand the SA Health Brand across Canada. We are hoping to do this in 2018/2019. We appreciate the continued support from our advertisers and the community as a whole. Health is not the most exciting topic but it is one of the most important issues we deal with on a daily basis. The South Asian community (of all ages) needs to be more proactive and receptive to this message. We have definitely observed improvments over the years but still have a long way to go. Please join us on this journey. Cheers to Good Health! Rina Gill 778 688 4973 rina@thehypeadagency.com Organizer, SA Health Expo Publisher, SA Health Magazine CEO, The #HYPE Advertising Agency

Do you ever feel paralyzed by LIFE? You know that feeling when everything just feels SO overwhelming that you just feel frozen in time and space not knowing where to begin? When you feel completely incapable of anything but know that something has to change.... For obvious reasons it’s a hard place to be. Just thinking about how you are going to navigate your way into a better position is overwhelming, let alone actually DOING anything about it. The pressure is heavy and the weight of the pressure can be downright paralyzing. Sometimes the weight is physical weight, sometimes it’s the weight of the world and sometimes it’s both. I know this weight. And I know so many women who know this weight too. It’s exhausting, it weakens you, it takes its toll and it often forces you to question everything. The weight is often derived from EXPECTATION and our feelings of not measuring up. We feel the: • • • • • • • •
Expectations we have of ourselves Expectations that others have of us Expectations we have of others Expectations about the way life SHOULD be Expectations about success and achievement Expectations about what we SHOULD look like, act like, be like Expectations about parenting, about finances, relationships, about sex, about motherhood, friendships..... And the list goes on....
No one is immune. BUT when our own expectations are continually not being met or when we feel like we are not measuring up to someone else’s expectations, we get worn down, and when we are worn down it becomes so challenging to find the energy to get back up. Sometimes our body even gives up as health conditions begin to kick in.... So for those of you who are feeling worn down, whose health is starting to suffer and who needs to find the oomph to start getting back up (possibly AGAIN), I want to share with you the 7 Keys to overcoming “LIFE paralysis” that I have discovered through my own personal experience and my professional experience having worked with 1000’s of women in and around mid life: 1. Find some inspiration. Books, podcasts and blogs are great resources. I look for recommendations or
seek information sources that offer me new insights or a refreshing point of view to help me shift my frame of reference. I love hearing how someone else has navigated challenges and made it through to the “other side” and always find that it gives me hope and optimism which is sometimes just what I need to find the oomph to get started or to keep going. I also seek inspiration by signing up for programs and by hiring mentors who are at least a few steps ahead of me in an area that I am feeling stuck or in need of guidance. Sometimes we get so blinded by our own struggles or view point that it’s difficult to see the sun through the clouds or even just to have the right tools to clear the clouds! I love learning and tapping into the expertise of people who have walked the path before me, it is one of the best ways to navigate challenges. I have been in a variety of group programs as well as one on one programs in order to work with: • • • • • •
A Money Coach A Business Growth and Development Coach A Psychotherapist A Relationship Expert A Personal Trainer (even when I was one myself!) A Mindset Coach
The healing, the insight, the learning and the self care that I get from working with all of these mentors and coaches has enabled me to not only help myself, but my family and my clients too! 2. Find someone to believe in you. When you struggle to believe in yourself, finding someone who can believe in you until you are able, is invaluable. Navigating “paralysis” alone can be completely daunting and often only further perpetuates your situation. When you can find someone who can “hold your hand” and even lead the way, it can be the greatest form of RELIEF. Let’s be real, the pressure to hold yourself together for everyone else in your life is a lot, so when someone “holds YOUR hand” for once and says, “you can let go, let’s do this together” it is such an amazing gift! When someone can hold space for you it may just be the ONE thing that gives you the ounce of strength you need to put one step in front of the other and keep going. 3. Find where you BELONG. We spend so much of our lives just trying to fit in, to feel like we are a part of something or trying to be accepted. When you continually have to try or pretend to be something you are not in order to fit in, it’s exhausting and
depleting! BUT when you get to be a part of something where just being you, the REAL you, is enough, you FINALLY get to feel what it’s like to BELONG. Trust me, the feeling of belonging is truly the most incredible feeling, it’s freeing to finally feel like you are not alone. So find a group, a place or a network where you can surround yourself with people who GET you and understand you, the connection will heal and nourish your soul and empower you to move forward. 4. Start small and lower your expectations. When all you see is a STEEP mountain ahead of you that feels crazy overwhelming, just start small. What is step #1? Then, what is step #2?... Stop trying to do 10 steps at once and just take one step at a time. Expecting yourself to be able to LEAP forward while skipping steps is unrealistic and only magnifies your challenges. Expect less of yourself and start small so you can actually start experiencing success! (Especially important if you are a perfectionist or someone who tends to be ALL in or ALL out).
present, to be still and to quiet your mind is an essential life practice. It is in these quiet moments that you create space to tap into your internal guidance system and listen to your heart. Your heart is always speaking to you and signalling to you but you have to slow down and be still to hear it. Starting your day and finishing your day with a connection practice through meditation, prayer, yoga, walking in nature or simply just being still, is a wonderful way to connect. So there you have it. The 7 Keys to Overcoming “LIFE Paralysis” from someone who has been through it and led 1000’s of women through the process too! I know each person’s journey is unique but the root of “paralysis” is the same. It is my hope that by sharing this process that you too will be inspired to find the courage to take the first step towards experiencing the vibrant health, wellness, and happiness that you desire so you can Live Connected and Be Free.
5. Stop focusing on what’s left. When things start to go well, when they start to shift in the right direction be sure to NOTICE and be thankful! Ignoring the good and re- focusing on what you still have left to overcome only makes it harder and perpetuates stuckness. Noticing the small successes and allowing yourself to celebrate them is KEY. Of course your struggles aren’t over, of course there is so much more yet to do BUT celebrating your successes by acknowledging them helps you to create more of them. Find someone who you can share your successes with, who will cheer you on and support you as you find your way. When you find a place where you belong, you can surely count on them to be your BEST supporters! 6. Get it onto paper. One of the best ways to process and work through challenges is getting your thoughts onto paper. I have journals for processing. Sometimes all the swirling thoughts in my head just compete for my attention and serve only to further overwhelm me. So, when my head is “spinning” or I am dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, getting my thoughts out of my head and onto paper is incredibly powerful. I let the pen do the writing and just keep going until I get it all out. I keep asking myself questions until I feel like all the thoughts are out. It’s a cathartic release that often offers much useful insight. 7. Daily connection practice. Taking time to be

Who is Rina Gill? B
The HYPE Advertising Agency
V
orn and raised in Toronto, Rina moved to BC in 2004. It was like a whole new world for her. She was used to growing up in a diverse, fast-paced environment that exemplified big city life in a concrete jungle. BC was a refreshing change and allowed her to explore a different perspective. Although Rina always wanted to be an entrepreneur, amazing job opportunities with well-known companies would come her way and she just couldn’t refuse. Even when she moved to BC, she landed a dream job in the corporate world that allowed her to network with the community and start building relationships. Eventually Rina was able to branch out on her own as she had built a strong foundation in the community. When the opportunity came to launch her baby, The HYPE Advertising Agency - a full service boutique marketing company, she ran with it and never looked back!
Under the Marketing umbrella, event planning and management is one of the services Rina offers and there have been many clients coming on board over the years for various types of events.
Mr. Olympia in Vegas
Coming from a big city like Toronto, Rina attended many events and noticed there was a void in many areas when it came to the types of events in BC, especially within the South Asian community. So, she started doing research and started putting a plan into place to produce her own events as well.
It wasn’t until a trip to Mr. Olympia that took place in Vegas September 2010 that Rina realized that there wasn’t a health, wellness, fitness show being organized for the South Asian community anywhere in Canada (and maybe even in the world). Ultimately her interest was to do a mainstream trade show for the entire community however it made sense to start small with a more targeted approach in order to test the waters. What better place to launch this initiative other than Surrey, BC, a place where approximately 40% of the population are South Asian.
The Official Launch
Over the Years
Less than 6 months later, The South Asian Health Wellness & Fitness Expo launched in Surrey, BC. Aside from organizing the trade show, it also made sense to have a magazine distributed at the Expo. It required more work and would generate more expenses, however Rina was adamant about the publication being FREE for the public.
Since launching in January 2011, Rina and her team have produced 7 Expo trade shows and 10 magazine issues. This is a major feat to accomplish as the concept is new to the SA community and health is a subject matter that cannot compete with the likes of Bollywood movies, music, entertainment and kabbadi, which are some of the areas that South Asians take great interest in. The reality is, the SA community is predisposed to certain medical conditions and they tend to be more reactive vs. proactive. Hence the reason launching the SA Health Expo & Magazine and continuing it annually was absolutely necessary.
Although it seemed like the Non-South Asian community was being excluded (and that didn’t feel right) this initial strategic approach was meant to develop a strong foundation while building up the support to expand the concept on a larger, mainstream scale in the future.
It's Time
Living in a Healthy Community
In anything you do over a period of time, as long as you are consistent, experience and knowledge is gained while building a strong network and foundation simultaneously. With that being said, in 2018 Rina felt it was time to take this health initiative to the next level and cater to the broader community as a whole. Cue the birth of the Surrey Health Expo & Magazine. This is an opportunity for Rina and her team to bring the entire community and all ethnicities together under one roof to explore the world of health, wellness, beauty and fitness. There will also be a diverse group of vendors, advertisers, sponsors and attendees.
The City of Surrey is already committed to promoting wellbeing and social change through their Healthy Communities initiative: it's all part of the process towards social development for all Surrey residents. Hence the reason organizing the event in Surrey at Surrey City Hall made absolute sense to Rina. To this date, an event of this magnitude has not taken place in Surrey. So, an enormous amount of support on all levels throughout the community will be necessary in order to make this event a huge success.
The City of Surrey is Growing Rapidly According to the 2016 Census, Surrey’s population is 517,887 with approx. 1,000 new residents moving into the City every month. At the moment, there aren't very many venue options to hold large scale trade shows (like the Vancouver Convention Centre) however Surrey City Hall is a great option with the beautiful Atrium and spacious outdoor Plaza area. Rina previously held 2 of the SA Health Expos at Surrey City Hall and she believes it will be a perfect fit for the upcoming launch of the Surrey Health Expo.
What everyone can expect to see at the upcoming 1st Annual Surrey Health Expo It will be taking place on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 from 12PM to 5PM at Surrey City Hall. Pre & Postnatal Fitness Designed Just for You – Fit 4 Two Surrey/White Rock March 2, 2018
It’s been a few weeks since I set my plans to get back into shape after the birth of my third child. To say it’s been an easy task would be a bold-faced lie. But it hasn’t been completely impossible, and I have found some amazing tools and resources to help me along the way. Fit 4 Two has been a much need dose of motivation and sanity during my hectic, and often sleep deprived, days.
When I first started planning to get fit and start eating properly again (hello delicious bagel carbs, I see you), one of the things I knew I needed was a fitness program that wasn’t too intense and offered considerate support. As much as I like to think that I’m superhuman, there was no way that I could jump back into daily weightlifting and running. My third pregnancy was rough on me, so I needed something adaptable and intended for my postpartum body and emotions. Group fitness isn’t something I’ve done a lot of in the past, but the idea of working out with other moms rather than trying to go it alone seemed encouraging. I’m so glad that I found Fit 4 Two and gave it a try! I chose the Stroller Fitness class as it was perfect for my schedule and my fitness goals – and baby could chill in his stroller while I sweat it out. The instructor, Courtney, was amazing and supported everyone in the class regardless of where they were at physically. I was motivated to do what my body would allow, but thanks to Courtney’s guidance, didn’t push myself towards injury or burnout. Because I was so impressed and excited about the program, I reached out to the Fit 4 Two Surrey/White Rock owner, Erin Gabriel, to find out why having classes designed for expectant and new mothers is needed. It turns out its not only moms who need wellness support, but programs like this are so vital for our community. Meeting passionate people who care about giving others a boost is also super motivating so learning about the mission of Fit 4 Two was eye opening for me.
“Our goal is to create a comfortable and supportive environment for all people who attend our classes. Yes, we’re meant to be a program for moms. But if you’re a caregiver or an expectant dad or a legal guardian, your fitness and health matters too. So long as you’re comfortable with breastfeeding and lots of sharing about development milestones and lack of sleep, you’re more than welcome.”
Erin explains that the classes are intended to be a holistic approach to maternal health. “There are so many benefits to being in a group class that extend beyond getting in shape. Most new moms need the emotional support that comes from being around others going through the same things. Its easier to cope with hormonal changes that come with motherhood if you feel connected to a community and are taking some time to move your body”. Erin’s goal for the future of Fit 4 Two is to see a new standard of care established for moms throughout Surrey and White Rock. With nutrition, emotional support and true community connections, there are plans to work with public health professionals and organizations to see the best services possible become the norm for pre and postnatal women. These goals are ones that support healthy families and hopefully, in turn, healthy communities. Fit 4 Two strives to provide an enjoyable place for new moms to get a regular and safe workout and to make new mom friends. And maybe Stroller Fitness isn’t your thing – they offer a wonderful variety of classes to take part in! AquaFit, Spin Class, Yoga, Barre Class and more; there’s an option for you no matter what your activity level or interests are. I’m grateful that I took the step to join in with Fit 4 Two as I begin to feel like a human again and not just a zombie-like milk machine. My food and fitness goals extend beyond these first few steps but meeting some new friends and accomplishing a few workouts has allowed me to dream about getting back to my pre-baby self.

ways to reduce your cancer risk
Did you know that about half of all cancers can be prevented? Learn about the impact of cancer and how to reduce your risk with It’s My Life! 01 Be a non-smoker
06 Practise sun safety
Quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health. Within 10 years of quitting, an ex-smoker’s risk of dying from lung cancer is cut in half. If you don’t smoke, do your best to avoid smoke. No amount of second-hand smoke is safe.
In Canada, sunlight is strong enough to cause skin cancer. Stay in the shade, wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and apply sunscreen properly. Also, don’t use tanning beds! Tanned skin is damaged skin.
02 Have a healthy body weight
07 Ask about vaccines
Besides not smoking, having a healthy body weight is one of the best things you can do to prevent cancer. Check with your doctor about what a healthy body weight is for you and how you can work toward it.
Hepatitis B infection increases your risk of liver cancer. HPV infection can lead to cervical, penile and other cancers. Check with your doctor about whether a hepatitis B or HPV vaccine is a good idea for you.
03 Eat well
08 Test for radon
Enjoy a variety of vegetables and fruit every day. Limit red meat and avoid processed meat. Eat lots of fibre. Eating a healthy diet can help reduce your cancer risk.
Radon is a colourless, odourless, tasteless radioactive gas found naturally in the environment. About 16% of lung cancer deaths in Canada are related to indoor radon. Test your home for radon by buying a test kit and take steps to lower radon levels if needed.
04 Move more and sit less
09 Be aware of hormones
Aim for 30 minutes of daily activity that gets your heart going each day to help protect against cancer. Too much sitting is different from not enough physical activity and can also increase your cancer risk. Try to take frequent, short breaks from sitting.
Taking hormone replacement therapy for menopause or the birth control pill increases the risk of some cancers and decreases the risk of others. If you’re concerned, talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits.
05 Limit alcohol
10 Get screened
It’s sobering news, but drinking any type or amount of alcohol increases your risk of developing cancer. The less alcohol you drink, the more you reduce your risk of cancer.
Screening tests help find cancer before you have any symptoms and even help prevent cancer by finding changes in your body that would become cancer if left untreated. Find out about organized screening programs for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers in your area.

DON’T DUMP, DONATE On average, Canadians throw out approximately 68 pounds of textiles each year, ranging from clothing, shoes, boots and accessories, to bedding and bath items, and more. Where do you think most of these items end up? If you said landfill, you are correct. Textiles are the new environmental problem. So what’s the solution? It’s easy: don’t dump, donate.

iabetes Canada has been collecting clothing and accessories from more than one million households and 4,500 donation bins across Canada for more than 30 years. In an average year, Diabetes Canada’s reusable goods program diverts 100 million pounds of textiles, electronics and small household items from landfill. This translates into savings of 942 million kWh of energy — equivalent to driving a compact car around the globe more than 46,000 times — and reduces our carbon footprint by 130 million kilograms. With the majority of the textiles you donate being reused, repurposed or recycled, you are truly helping to reduce what goes to landfill. But that’s not all you’re doing: your donations also help to fund world-leading research to end diabetes; send 2,400 youth and families to D-Camps for children living with type 1 diabetes; and support the
