M ic r oblading At The Perfect Feather we specialize in microblading, which is a cosmetic tattoo procedure that uses a small hand tool with tiny, sterile needles to draw fine, hair-like lines. Microblading is perfect for those who want to fully reconstruct, define, cover gaps, or fill-in overplucked brows while maintaining a soft, natural look. The procedure is typically a two-step process. The initial appointment includes consultation and the initial application of pigment while the second appointment, which is about 6 weeks later, is a touch up to ensure consistency and longevity of the pigments applied at the first session. Annual refreshers are recommended to keep results looking their best. Microblading lasts between 6 – 18 months if proper aftercare instructions are followed. Cosmetic tattoo procedures are performed using various devices, however, at The Perfect Feather we only use disposable hand tools to ensure your safety. We are proud to be Fraser Health approved, licensed, and insured. We offer teeth whitening and microblading as stand-alone services and also offer an All-in-One package which offers our clients the opportunity to have both services in one appointment at a discounted rate. “I had my teeth whitened by Erin at The Perfect Feather and all I can say is WOW! Not only is Erin super personable but she was really great at explaining the process and checking to make sure I was comfortable throughout the entire experience. The end result is amazing, I am super happy and will definitely be returning to see her in the near future.

“Many years of over plucking left my eyebrows vey thin and sparse. Erin completely transformed my face! She really took the time to make sure myeyebrows were the right size, shape and colour for my face (even putting in extra hairs where I asked for them) and that I understood how to care for my new brows while they healed to achieve maximum results. Her studio is not only extremely clean but beautiful as well. Erin whitened my teeth while I was getting my eyebrows done. I couldn’t believe how white they got! I feel like I have a new mouth! Her caring thoughtful approach to microblading and teeth whitening and her friendly attitude really set me at ease and I would recommend Perfect Feather to anyone considering either of these processes! Thank you Erin!”

Nutrition & Health By Saira Hayre

She says that this method of balance is important because it helps build good long-term eating habits. Understandably, these eating habits, which include the consumption of lots of fruits and vegetables, are particularly beneficial for children as they grow older and develop into teenagers, because this is the time when they go through immense physical change. Unfortunately, because a vast majority of them drink too much pop and caffeine, their bodies do not absorb enough iron and consequently, there is a high chance of them having mild aenemia, which makes them feel tired, according to Lemay.

January can be termed as the month of change and renewal because besides being the start of a new year, it’s also a time when a significant chunk of the world’s population indulges in the good old ritual of setting new goals and resolutions. Unfortunately, these goals and resolutions, which often revolve around health and fitness, are usually left unaccomplished, for various reasons. Indeed, along with being unrealistic and complicated, most of the individuals who set them are uninformed about the age specific exercise habits that would benefit their bodies as they transition from being children, teenagers, adults and finally seniors. They also often fail to realize the importance of one key component that plays a starring role in our lives during each of these transitions. This component, which is especially important during the growing up years, is known as nutrition. Claudia Lemay, a Surrey based Registered Dietician who has written two books dedicated to children’s nutrition, says that healthy habits should start early. In order to build them, she encourages parents to follow a model called the Division of Responsibility in Feeding. Developed by an internationally renowned Registered Dietician named Ellyn Satter, it promotes confidence in children and helps them become competent eaters. According to the model, parents decide what, where, and when in relation to food, while the child decides how much and whether to eat it. “It’s the job of the parents to decide what goes on the table, at what time, and where. So, for example, not in front of the TV. The child then decides how much and whether to eat it,” explains Lemay.

She adds that this system works well because it helps the child feel in control, makes them feel like they have a choice, and encourages them to follow their internal queues. Being able to develop and follow these internal queues at an early age is especially important and beneficial for children, because according to Lemay, specialists believe that many of the problems associated with obesity, stem from people not following them. “When parents say finish your plate, if you want desert, kids don’t learn to eat only what they need, and instead end up eating more. So again, it’s very important to follow the internal queues.” Besides this, Lemay says it’s equally important for children to drink lots of water and milk and also spend time outdoors. Elaborating on simple outdoor activities that benefit children between the ages of 5-11, Personal Trainer Julianne Nimmo explains that parents can enforce a “take a walk after dinner rule,” or at least ensure that their kids are “getting active for 30 minutes a day, on most days of the week.” Alongside physical activity, Nimmo, who is the owner of the Better Body Fitness Studio in Surrey, believes that children should be given “a balance of healthy foods…made up of 80% nutritious choices and 20% good food choices which they love, that may not be as healthy.”

Besides iron, teenagers can also benefit from exercise because it will help them maintain a positive body weight as well as psychological fitness. “As teens go through many changes physical, emotional, cognitive and social, exercise…has many benefits on the mind and body,” says Nimmo. She adds that decreasing teenagers’ time on social media and encouraging them to get involved in social activities which incorporate dance and fitness, can help them better cope with the academic pressures and stress that is commonly asssociated with high school. A similar and slightly modified approach incorporating regular exercise can help individuals deal with stress as adults as well. Coupled with a diet consisting of fruits, vegetables and whole grain, they can also avoid common problems including Vitamin D defficiency, diabettes, weight gain and heart disease.

Following this approach, according to Lemay, will help adults attain longevity and transition more smoothly into old age, during which time individuals commonly lose their sense of thirst and sometimes become dehydrated and malnourished. To counter these common problems, she suggests the consumption of 6-8 glasses of water a day along with a diet rich in protein based foods like yogurt, nuts, tofu, cheddar cheese, and soy milk. Along with the consumption of protein based foods, which aid in the buidling of muscles, elderly individuals should focus on staying active by doing yoga, stretching and bodyweight/resistance exercises because it will improve their balance and posture, according to Nimmo. Summing up the benefits of exercise for all individuals, Nimmo explains that “regular exercise can enhance psychological fitness. According to her, “[It] also creates a boost of the endorphins in the brain, and these are associated with a happy, positive feeling.” Agreeing with Nimmo, Lemay also reiterates the importance of making healthy food choices. “People need to understand that food is important. Our body is made with food. We need vitamins and minerals for biochemical reactions to occur i.e., for stuff to happen (making a new protein- like a muscle cell of the heart). We also need the pieces from the food to build our body. Eating real food, like fruit and vegetables, whole grains and beans is important. Pop and cheetos do not have vitamin and mineral for the chemical reactions to happen!”

Gary Saint Lion Mangat “

By Saira Hayre

He initially took up training in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) because he found it challenging, but Gurdarshan Singh Mangat’s growing passion for the sport eventually turned it into his full-time profession.

With time, dedication and an immense amount of hard work, he eventually mastered the sport, which consists of different martial art forms like kickboxing, wrestling, boxing and jujitsu.

Indeed, it’s been ten years since his first fight in 2008, and since then 31-year-old Mangat has won a slew of titles, fans and worldwide recognition, as he is currently the number one ranked Indian fighter in the world.

Undoubtedly, the hard work continues even now, as everyday he practices at least two to three of the four disciplines that make up the mixed martial arts form. Alongside, he is also constantly on the lookout for different strategies and moves to use in the ring because for him, the sport is “a daily lifestyle” which he has to study and obsess over in order to maintain an edge over his competitors.

I never really chose [Mixed Martial Arts.] It just kind of found me … when I did it for the first time, it was the hardest thing that I had ever done,”

admits Mangat, who thrived on the complexities that came with the art and slowly built up his skills.

“I have to put together a lot of information and turn it into something useful. At the same time, I also have to remember it and then apply it during the time of a fight situation. I can’t sit there and think about it. I have to be instinctive, “ he says.

Besides his instincts, Mangat also heavily relies on his mental strength while fighting an opponent in the ring. In fact, he candidly admits that on the day of a fight, an MMA artist has to use 99% of their mental strength and only one percent of their physical strength. His emphasis on the importance of mind over body doesn’t come as a surprise because despite not actively participating in sports while growing up and “still lacking certain athletic abilities” even today, Mangat has successfully managed to overcome and break society’s preconceived notions of what a typical sports person should be or look like.

What I realize now looking back at [high school], is that it doesn’t matter if I was skinny, chubby or short… if I accepted that I wasn’t the ideal image for whatever sport [I wanted to play] or whatever else I wanted to be…it really came down to mindset… Eventually, I just realized what I had, who I was and what I wanted to become… looking back on it, if I wanted to become the best basketball player [or any other kind of sportsperson], I probably could have. It was just me not accepting that I could fulfill those roles, at that time…now I choose not to accept any of those limitations.”

This is in stark contrast to his high school years though as back then, he was considered too short to even make the basketball team. >

“The effect of Mangat’s limitless attitude can be seen in the fact that he has only lost two matches in his career so far. Interestingly enough, he maintains that he has learned more from these two losses than all of his wins because among other things, even today they continue to motivate and push him to work harder for the next fight, without making him overconfident. According to Mangat, the balancing of these qualities is extremely important in a profession that is competitive, always evolving and seeing the entrance of new players. “I don’t believe I’m naturally talented whatsoever,” says Mangat. I believe I’ve slowly achieved the results I have based on my work ethic. So that alone doesn’t allow me to be overconfident. “I know that for me to reach any higher pinnacle I want, I have to keep working at it,” he explains. Keeping these sentiments in mind, it’s not surprising that Mangat, who has also obtained a degree in Accounting from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, only trains with people who are bigger, stronger and better than him – and he advises aspiring fighters and sportspersons to do the same. Besides his rigorous training and practice sessions, Mangat says that he draws immense strength and also inspiration from his religion and the stories and struggles of his Sikh ancestors. In fact, he believes that the strength, which has been passed down from generation to generation and also runs inside of him, is what gives him a distinct edge over his competitors.

This strength was put to good use once again when Mangat, who was born and brought up in Williams Lake, BC, fought Abdul Muneer in Mumbai, India on April 23, 2017. Gary who goes by the nickname “Saint Lion” was the winner of this fight, which was streamed across the globe, and he is now considered to be the best Indian fighter in the world. Interestingly enough, Mangat, who viewed the fight as a challenge, moved up two weight classes to fight Maneer, who is a featherweight. “For me, the biggest reason I did this was to represent the Sikh faith. It’s happened during the month of Vaisakhi so it was very important to me. It was especially nice to go to India to fight. It’s where all of our ancestors and ancestral history stems from… that’s why the weight difference [between me and my opponent] didn’t bother me. It was just another obstacle that I knew I could overcome.” Fought on April 23 in Mumbai with the first world organization to ever go to India. Owned by the Prince of Bahrain. Moved up two weight classes to fight who they called best Indian fighter. I took the fight and went into it underweight. 2 days before also got food poisoning but there was never a chance that I would pull out of the fight. I dominated the fight and beat him in a unanimous decision. Fight was streamed worldwide, the fans in India were so amazing. The rivalry between us leading up to the fight had a lot of people divided on who they were going to cheer for.

Gary & Chandni Get Married On July 9th, I married my best friend in Montreal. We had the engagement and wedding in Montreal and then the wedding reception in Vancouver. It was everything we had dreamt of and the moments we wanted to create. I even surprised her with a surprise dance performance that me and my groomsmen had been practicing for a couple months after my India fight. We wanted the wedding to show both our sides and each city had its own theme. Hers was all about food and lavishness, mine was a bit of the same but more about the party from having a transformer show up on the dance floor spraying everyone down to having one of the biggest Indian singers Zora Randhawa in attendance and performing. There was about 450 different guests in both cities. Planned it all in six months, proposed in February and got married in July, plus had a fight camp and a fight in India between that.

Life Mission I am always out to make history and cement myself as someone who took hold of his life and took it in complete different direction than where everyone thought it was going to be so I’m always trying to push the envelope with new challenges. The wedding was the first time in all my years where I actually put a pause on fighting to enjoy something else in my life but now its back to business. After the India fight there has been plenty of opponents calling me out to take a chance at gaining the spotlight I have earned. End of the day, this whole journey is about inspiring, motivating , and seeing just how far this small town kid can push it. I am always open to all organizations from Brave to the UFC, if the business side of it makes sense for the risk we take as athletes then the fights make sense. I am signed by one of the biggest sports agencies in MMA, Paradigm Sports Management who represent the biggest names in MMA, one of their clients being Conor McGregor. So I trust our plan on what we are set out to do that not only takes care of me and my family in the short term but also in the long term.

The Power of “Style” How to align your style with your Authentic Self by Style Coach Parry

Athenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are. Authenticity. Congurence. Mindfulness. Synergy... We are all becoming more familiar with these contemporary phrases in our collective pursuit of happiness. But what do they really mean? At some point, we all feel the restless nagging for some sort of eternal truth who am I?” and pieces of advice like just be yourself,” “ Follow your heart,” seem simple in concept, yet profoundly difficult to achieve in reality. Peel back the onion metaphor, each of us has many layers of personality... The first layer is like a mask. People usually take a mask on their faces everyday. There are certain ways people behave and appear when they interact with others. They are very careful and watch themselves so that they don’t show any of those behaviours that they would not want the world to know while communicating with the world. People tend to portray more logical, reasonable and analytic personality even though they are very emotional because it is what business world respect. Therefore they hide or camouflage their emotional side.

My Name is Parry, I am certified Hair, makeup artist and Style Coach. I work with women to match their inner beauty to their outer beauty and define what they want to represent on the outside. it’s about building their image in a natural, authentic, and empowering way. Style Coaching is a combination of personal styling advice, image consultancy tips and life coaching motivational techniques rolled into one. By approaching the coaching process from the appearance perspective women, and men, may benefit from gaining a better personal understanding of self and their goals and desires.

The way we dress goes beyond fashion to what i call “personal style” -- i.e., the way we dress to represent our authentic selves, so we can attract those who appreciate who we are internally. Experts estimate up to 95 percent of our communication is non Verbal, Style is the way we speak to the world without words. I believe that when your inside and outside work in harmony, that’s when you can really start to share your inner light with the world, instead of hiding it beneath heavy cable knit sweater or boring workwear uniform!

Second layer consists of what we do for our work, our hobbies, and how we define ourselves within our community. WIt is all about how we wish to be perceived and labelled by other people. Like choosing an outfit from our wardrobe, this layer can be used to tell the world what kind of things we value, or it can be hidden behind, like a protective suit of armour. “I’m a successful business woman”, “I’m attractive and desirable”, “I’m athletic and keep myself fit”, or conversely, “I’m not materialistic”, or “I’m a leader, not a follower.” This layer is commonly concerned with how other people perceive us, not who we really are.

This innermost layer represents our truest emotions, and our unfiltered response to the present moment being experienced. It is where we can connect with a sense of our greatest aliveness and we feel comfortable and “at peace” within our own skin. The outer layers of the personality are often referred to as the “Constructed Self”, and in truth, most forms of image consultancy and personal styling only ever touch on how others perceive us. In Style Coaching , without going into any deep psycho-analysis, we gently help people connect with the “Authentic Self”, and our approach is much more holistic. It takes a little bit of soul searching, but the result is that we are able to help people align their innermost self with the outer layer they present to the world. woman has an underlying belief or fear that she is not intrinsically beautiful, or that she may be less beautiful than other women, she may compensate for this by spending excessive time or money on looking attractive, or she might even seek cosmetic surgery. It’s helpful to bring about an awareness of our fears so we can overcome them, rather than just trying to mask them. Beneath all these layers, we have our true inner self, our core or “authentic self”. This is where we will find the answer to the question, “Who am I?” Style is also one part personality: spirit, verve, attitude, wit, inventiveness. It demands the desire and confidence to express whatever mood one wishes. Such variability is not only necessary but a reflection of a person’s unique complexity as a human being. People want to be themselves and to be seen as themselves. In order to work, style must reflect the real self, the character and personality of the individual; anything less appears to be a costume. Self Improvement, there’s always room for it. If you haven’t got any? Create some.

As Coco Channel Said “Beauty Begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” Clothes should enhance who you really are not mask it.. Choose to wear only the clothes that will best influence or develop our best behaviour. we must Empower ourselves with clothes and grooming aids that work for us. The clothes we wear should feel like a beautiful second skin. When we look in the Style Coach Parry mirror, we should see ourselves - not another person’s expectations or a cliché stereotype of how we think we ‘should’ look. There should be no internal “clashing”. Believe it or not, your outer appearance will start to click into place when you celebrate all of your layers. The outfit you choose should be the wrapping you lovingly place around your inner gifts!

4 SIMPLE STEPS TO ALIGN YOUR STYLE WITH AUTHENTIC SELF Have you ever worn an outfit that you love so much, you don’t want to take it off? It might have been something you always wanted, or that seemed to ‘call out to you’ from a shop window... An outfit that feels like it was made for you! If you have, then you’ll remember walking tall, with your head held high, brimming with confidence & feeling fearless. How come? Because authenticity begins when your inner world matches your outer world. Outfits that are perfectly matched to your inner self don’t make you feel like you are wearing a disguise, or putting on a costume to play a role. Instead, they empower you to proudly express who you really are, and to step into the best version of yourself! Dressing for your body shape, colour season & style personality are fantastic skills, but we also need to tune in to our own internal voice to help guide us towards authentic alignment too!

Step One Are you buying this because it is “fashionable”and in thing”? Remember if you don’t feel comfortable in something it shows and also feeling Fashionable can never outweigh feeling comfortable in your own skin. There is no escaping the idea that clothing can make or break someone’s energy, aura, first impression, vibe, etc. So why not put clothing on that adds positively to your mood? Aim for outfits that make you feel empowered and self confident.

Step three Will I feel Body-Confident Wearing this outfit? No matter how amazing an outfit might look on a mannequin, we need to consider how it will affect our physiology. They say that the fastest way to change how you feel is by changing how you are physically moving your body (emotion comes from motion!) This can be used to create powerful states of self-confidence, but conversely, if an outfit is physically uncomfortable then it will make you feel socially awkward, and your confidence will shrink.

Step four What does this outfit express about me as a person? Our clothes say a great deal about who we are and can signal a great deal of socially important things to others, even if the impression is actually unfounded. These outfits are more like a costume, or day-to-day uniform, but they lack personal touches to make them your own. Always ask, what can I do to authentically express something about myself in this outfit? Where’s the small tribute to ‘me’ in this? Be you , Be Confident and Be Your Own Style Icon!

Moving Forward Family Services: Counselling For Your Emotional Health

Moving Forward Family Services (MFFS) is a registered charity and registered non-profit collaborative of over 100 counsellor and social workers. The agency’s counsellors and social workers have clinical experience in addictions, mental health, domestic violence, parenting, couples and family conflict, anger/stress, victimization, grief and trauma. MFFS provide counselling seven days a week, including weekends and evenings, in Abbotsford, Surrey, Langley, White Rock, New Westminster, Burnaby, Victoria and Vancouver.

MFFS’ unique service delivery model is garnering attention! The Team is honoured to have received: the Canadian Association for Mental Health 150 Leaders for Change in Mental Health; the 2017 DRISHTI Magazine Award for Community Engagement; The 2017 Roopchand Seebaran Legacy Social Work Award for Advocacy; The 2017 Shakti Award for Community Services; A 2017 Nominee for ‘Serving with Distinction’ from Surrey Cares; The 2016 Dr. Nancy Hall Public Policy Leadership Award (awarded by Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Branch); The 2016 Inspiring Social Worker of the Year Award by the BC Association of Social Workers; The 2016 BC Public Health Association Award of Merit; 2016 Honourable Mention for Community Builder from the Surrey Leader Newspaper.

The evidence is clear, one’s emotional health and one’s physical health are very much connected – when one is struggling in one area, the other will also be impacted. To maintain optimal physical health, one must also ensure their emotional health is strong.

If you or someone you know is in need of high quality, confidential counselling, text or call Moving Forward Family Services at 778-321-3054.

MFFS recently organized their 2nd Annual Fundraiser on Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 and it was a Halloween theme with prizes given out for the best costumes. Stay tuned for information on the next fundraiser.

Unlike most non-profits, MFFS will see anyone – regardless of age, gender, presenting issue, where they live. Most organizations have funding parameters that limit who they can see / how often they can be seen – as MFFS is not directly funded they are able to provide an open service – counselling available to anyone who wants it. In addition to seeing anyone, they operate with little to no waits. Someone wanting counselling will never wait more than a week or two to access counselling services. Services are provided in multiple languages, including in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. Founder - Gary Thandi Currently Moving Forward offer free services with fully supervised, fully insured Masters Degree Level Counselling Psychology interns from accredited post-secondary institutions (research reveals that their clinical outcomes are equal to Counsellors in the field, meaning their skills and abilities are of the highest clinical quality) though clients have option as well to see Registered Clinical Counsellors for a subsidized rate of $35. In exchange for providing fee-for-service clients, their Registered Clinical Counsellors provide supervision to the students. Thus MFFS is mostly ‘self-contained’ – it does not need core government funding to operate. Another unique aspect to MFFS is they have minimal hierarchy and operate out of donated spaces meaning funds go to direct (clinical) services. Photographed by Aziz Ladha Photography

Abstain from self-stimulation for three days to ensure a higher sperm count. What can I do to mitigate the chances of infertility? • Stop smoking cigarettes - tobacco has been linked to low sperm counts and sluggish motility. • Decrease liquor intake since alcohol can reduce the production of normally formed sperm needed for a successful pregnancy • Watch your weight, both overweight and underweight men can have fertility problems. With too much weight, there can be hormonal disturbances, and when a man is too lean, he can have decreased sperm count and functionality. • Exercise in moderation. Excessive exercise could lower your sperm count indirectly by lowering the amount of testosterone in your body.

How many times should a boy or man check his genitalia for a lump?

When urinating in public restrooms, sometimes part of the leftover liquid pool in the stall splashes back on you. Can this cause a disease or infection? If yes, what should I do to prevent an infection? Urine is generally sterile – no bacteria or virus for a normally healthy person, so there should be no major concern. Just rinse the spot with water or use soap if there is a skin break. By the way, it is an old wife’s tale that urine can numb the pain of a jellyfish sting.
