June 21 - August 19 Nine COURSE credits

Join us for this distinctive summer program that accelerates your college career and integrates intensive studio work with art history lectures and discussions. You will be doing what SAIC is known for — merging making and meaning, working across a broad range of media, and accessing the amazing resources that SAIC and the city of Chicago offers. Participation in this program fulfills necessary first-year requirements and offers you the opportunity to take more elective coursework in the fall. This course is designed exclusively for students who graduated from the high school class of 2020 and chose to delay the beginning of their college career until Fall 2021.

HIGHLIGHTS » A distinctive program designed to integrate studio making courses with art history curriculum, which will also teach you a wide range of research methods for artists and designers.

» Team-taught by Contemporary Practices faculty who are all practicing artists and designers, as well as highly acclaimed and widely published SAIC faculty member James Elkins, E.C. Chadbourne Professor of Art History, Theory, and Criticism.

» Merit and need-based financial aid apply toward the cost of tuition for the program.

» SAIC’s incredible on-campus resources are available to you, including our Woodshop, Advanced Output Center (3D scanning and printing, laser cutting), Media Center (cameras, microphones, light kits, and other stateof-the-art equipment checkout) large format printing, sewing machines, libraries and special collections, and 24-hour access to studio classrooms.

program details flexible planning to meet a variety of student needs WEEKS ONE AND TWO June 21–July 2 Art History and Studio Orientation Focus The first two weeks of coursework will be delivered both in-person and online so that you can participate if you are required to quarantine when you arrive in Chicago. In-person classes will be held for students who are able to attend, with extensive connection to the class for students participating online. In these first weeks, you will be introduced to the program and have a series of six art history classes taught in person and online. There will be an Orientation class and two days of studio classes online, or in-person, depending on your needs. WEEKS THREE–NINE July 5–August 19 Intensive Studio Focus Beginning in Week 3, class will be delivered in person as much as possible with rooms reserved to ensure students and faculty can work together on campus while engaging in any necessary social-distance practices at this future point in time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. How do I register? A. R egistration begins on April 11th with registration times available throughout the day, and we will also accommodate students for whom this day is not convenient. You will work one-on-one with our admissions representative to register for summer, as well as secure your fall 2021 schedule — beneficial to ensuring you have access to the courses in which you are most interested. What is the cost of the program and am I eligible for financial aid? A. T uition is $15,660 USD — the cost of nine credits that will apply directly toward completing your degree. You are eligible to apply any merit or need-based aid you are eligible to receive toward that tuition amount. On-campus housing is an additional $3,285 for a double room or $4,365 for a single room for 9 weeks. There will be a meal plan for students whose cost is to be determined. SAIC is specifically preparing specialized facilities to ensure a highquality experience for any students who may need to participate online during the first two weeks. Q. What type of housing arrangements are available?

DAILY SCHEDULE:

A. Y ou may live on campus in our residence halls or live off-campus in Chicago. Your plans for fall housing can be the same as your summer plan or can be changed.

Q. Do I have to reapply for merit scholarship for this program?

A. N o. Any previous merit scholarship you were awarded will be prorated for the tuition cost for this program. To determine eligibility for additional financial aid, eligible students should file a 21-22 FAFSA found at fafsa.gov.

Wednesday a.m. – Free Wednesday afternoon – Art History Thursday – Studio Day Friday – Studio and short art history concept lecture; also reserved for discussion and critique with all faculty and peers Along with working in the studio and being introduced to facilities, materials and techniques, students will explore the city of Chicago and its vast cultural resources. Please note: at the start of week three, July 5, all participants must be able to participate in-person, on-campus with their quarantine completed.

Q. Will classes be taught in-person? A. T he program is designed to be taught entirely in person following COVID-19 safety protocols, with online options available during the first two weeks for those who need to quarantine. Due to the fluidity of the COVID-19 situation, in-person courses may need to move online due to city, state, and federal guidelines. Q. When does the Fall semester begin? A. T he Summer Kickstart Program will conclude on Thursday, August 19, and the Fall 2021 semester is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 1. In the interim, students will have time to rest, prepare, and further enjoy summer in Chicago.
