SUMMER 2022 CLASSES REGISTER ONLINE at continuingstudies.saic.edu Session 1: June 27-July 1 | Session 2: July 11-15 | Session 3: July 18-29 | Session 4: August 1-12

ANIMATION AND VIDEO Animation Studio Session 1, June 27-July 1, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Explore traditional and digital animation techniques, such as frame-by-frame, stop-motion, and more. Students complete several projects that focus on communicating ideas through motion studies, character/environment development, storytelling, and other cinematic devices such as composition, set creation, and props.

Moving Images Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 1-4, In-Person This course serves as a foundation for students interested in video production, motion graphics, and animation. Students may work with traditional processes such as sketchbooking alongside digital applications such as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere.

ARCHITECTURE Architecture: Design & Drawing Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 9-12, Online Learn basic architectural drawing, perspective, drafting techniques, and 3D modeling. You will create a final piece that may include prints and drawings, 3D physical models, and much more. No experience necessary!

DRAWING AND ILLUSTRATION Comics and Graphic Novels Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 1-4, Online Learn how to tell engaging stories and investigate character development, plot structure, scripting, and storyboarding. Explore penciling, inking, coloring, space, and perspective through the use of a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional media, which may include colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, and handmade zines. All levels are welcome.

Digital Drawing and Illustration NEW Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Begin with traditional media and processes and then translate your ideas digitally in programs such as Procreate and Adobe Illustrator. Presentations will feature work by contemporary illustrators who are pushing the field of illustration forward using new approaches to mark-making.

Drawing Studio Session 1, June 27-July 1, M-F, 9-4, Online Session 2, July 11-15, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 4, August 1-12, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Express yourself through drawing and learn a variety of techniques and approaches to build your technical, spatial, and creative abilities. Working with a range of materials, investigate contemporary subjects and themes through skills such as line, perspective, tone, proportion, composition, value, gesture, and contour. All levels are welcome.

Figure Drawing Session 1, June 27-July 1, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 2, July 11-15, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Working from the nude model, you will learn how to draw the human form from direct observation and gain skills in representing proportion, volume, composition, gesture, and the accurate and expressive use of line and tone.

FASHION Fashion Construction Session 1, June 27-July 1, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Session 4, August 1-12, M-F, 9-12, In-Person You will be designing, constructing, and sewing your own garments from start to finish utilizing a wide variety of materials such as paper, muslin, second-hand clothing, and fabric off the bolt. No experience is necessary!

FASHION (CONT’D.) Fashion Illustration Session 4, August 1-12, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Develop drawing skills and fashion illustration techniques with an emphasis on individual style and expression, inspired by live and clothed models and garments from SAIC’s Fashion Resource Center. Previous drawing experience is helpful but not necessary.

PAINTING From Drawing to Painting Session 2, July 11-15, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Transition from drawing to acquiring painting skills such as line, volume, space, materiality, form and function, and palette using a variety of traditional and contemporary materials. This course is recommended for both beginners and those wanting to improve and develop their current abilities.

Oil Painting Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Session 4, August 1-12, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Learn to stretch a canvas, lay out a palette, paint application techniques, and color mixing, along with color theory, composition, structure, proportion, and perspective through observational painting, as well as exercises that encourage you to find your own direction and style.

Water-Based Painting Session 1, June 27-July 1, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 2, July 11-15, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Explore traditional and non-traditional materials and methods used in water-based painting. Working from a variety of subjects, you may use ink, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media while building skills in color, tone, volume, contrast, and temperature.

WRITING Creative Writing Session 3, July 18-29, M-F, 9-12, Online Learn how to craft short stories, monologues, poetry, and personal essays, as well as edit, revise and workshop your writing with your peers. Push your skills through journaling, free writing, writing through music, digging through memories and dreams, and other methods of responding to the world in written form. All levels are welcome.

SAIC and the Art Institute of Chicago In addition to the Art Institute’s famous collections of French Impressionist, PostImpressionist, and Surrealist work, the museum’s new Modern Wing houses a worldrenowned collection of 20th and 21st century art. Students enrolled in ECP have unlimited access to the museum’s collections. ^ ^

Registration Register online at continuingstudies.saic.edu. Call 312.629.6170 or email cs@saic.edu if you have any questions about online registration. All students in grades 9–12 may register for noncredit. Students who have completed their sophomore year have the option of enrolling for one college credit per course.

Tuition Audit (noncredit) course: $500 1.0 college credit (student must have completed their sophomore year): $1,740 Tuition does not include supplies. Students provide their own supplies and will receive a material list on the first day of class. Supplies vary by class and can range from $50–$200.

Refund Policy 100 percent tuition refund will be issued one week prior to the session start date. No refunds will be issued after this date. All requests to drop a course must be submitted in writing to cs@saic.edu and include the student’s name, ID number, and course information. Refunds take four to six weeks to process. Refunds will not be issued if a course delivery format changes from in-person to online due to health guidelines.

COVID-19 Policy Starting in the 2021-2022 academic year, all undergraduate, graduate, postbaccalaureate, and Continuing Studies students who are eligible for a COVID vaccine and who intend to be on campus for any period of time will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. SAIC will continue to follow COVID protocols informed by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH). All students will be required to follow SAIC’s evolving policies around masking, social distancing, and submission of vaccine status documentation.

Financial Assistance Financial assistance is available in the form of limited need-based aid and scholarships where need is not a requirement. Visit saic.edu/ecpfinancialaid for more information and how to apply.

ECP Chicago Youth Artist Scholarship Founded in 2012, the ECP Chicago Youth Artist Educational Scholarship will benefit Chicago Public Schools high school students enrolled in the Early College Program. The scholarship will cover 100 percent tuition for a fall, spring, or summer class. Applicants must submit the ECP registration form and CYA application form which can be found at saic.edu/cya.
