As we near the end of the spring 2019 semester at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), we can look back on an eventful year in the Department of Fashion Design. Fall 2018 kicked off with Fabric Fest, a weeklong symposium dedicated to broadening our understanding of fabric. We explored fashion’s primary medium of expression by using the history and production of textiles to draw connections to current social, political, economic, and environmental factors. A quest for sustainability is pushing scientific advances that are blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological. The symposium was further enriched by compelling lectures and workshops given by Fashion department faculty Sandra Adams, Caroline Bellios (BFA 2003), Gillion Carrara, Anke Loh, Bambi Breakstone, Yoshiko Fredisdorf, Abigail Glaum-Lathbury (BFA 2006), Kristin Mariani (BFA 1994), and Pamela Vanderlinde, in addition to visiting lecturer Marianne Fairbanks (MFA 2001). We also introduced digital patternmaking through a course titled Virtual Flat to Form, taught by Aubrie Meyer. As we look toward the future of fashion, innovations in materials and technologies are offering students new perspectives and potential approaches to making garments and accessories. How does one go about making something precious within a dystopian context? It is a question that is very much present in the minds of young designers today, who are confronted by the enormous environmental, economic, and social costs of an industry fueled by fast fashion. It is a model of production and consumption that will need to change, and our students are poised to take it into a new direction. This year our sophomores explored the term “metalliferous”—A term used to describe metallic hues and materials with conductive properties—as a driver for color in their sculptural and conceptual work, which is on display on the ground floor of Venue SIX10. The creations on display consider the potential for transformation through the process of making and design. This academic year also marked the introduction of a new capstone course called Spatial Habitats. Under the guidance of SAIC faculty Jackey Cave, the graduating seniors in the Fashion department’s Body-Builder pathway have collaboratively designed and built installations on the second floor. I invite you to explore the creative output of our exemplary students on display over four floors of the Spertus, Venue SIX10. K AT R I N S C H N A B L

This year, we have created one section of the poster book featuring senior posters and the program for the runway show, with a complementary section featuring curricular sequences in the undergraduate pathways and graduate offerings, as well as the enrichment and resources the Fashion department has to offer.

We are looking ahead to 2020 as our 10-year anniversary, celebrating the first graduating master’s class from our innovative graduate program, Fashion, Body, and Garment, approaches. With more than 90 alums across the globe, the ripple effect of the ground-breaking curriculum exploring fashion broadly, both on and off the body is palpable. Our alums are breaking the mold and making new waves across design houses, galleries, museums, and as practitioners and teachers.

In a curriculum interlaced with conceptual design development projects, students explore the bodice and the skirt as initial garment shells close to the skin through draping, pattern-making, and sewing to construct a variety of shapes in cotton. In their spring semester, S O P H O M O R E students completely reimagine the idea of a skirt and a top to build unique and outstanding garments to express their concepts, as they question preconceived notions about garment categories. The J U N I O R class builds the skills and talents required to design and produce innovative fashion. Initially, students learn how to develop a group of garments and then create a collection using a wide range of fabrications. With a focus on use of color, texture, and patterns, students work on a series of creative draping challenges that embody the fundamental building blocks of proportion, fit, and design refinement, with final projects fitted on models in both muslin and fabric. The spring semester culminates with students designing, executing, and presenting a three-look collection that conveys each student’s personal vision.

Spatial Habitats is a brand-new Capstone class that designs the exhibition for the Body-Builder elective work on the second floor of Venue SIX10. The course explores methods and processes for planning, production, and research leading up to the installation, where students will consider the space, duration, audience, and partners. Students contemplate curation for solo or group exhibits, work in teams, and gain professional practice as they lay the groundwork to develop a fully considered display.

The Collector’s Eye “I was taken aback when I first saw it, as I didn’t know what to expect. But it’s grown on me since then and we continue to enjoy looking at it,” says Nancy Mollers, while pointing to a 1975 portrait of herself by the late Chicago artist Ed Paschke. It hangs beneath text art by Adam Pendleton in the West Loop home she shares with her husband Bob. Among the many artworks they’ve collected over the years, Paschke’s painting may be the most personal, recalling a time in their lives when they were young collectors beginning to explore the art world.

“Art was a fun interest we developed together as a couple, even though we didn’t have a background or education in it,” says the Chicago native, who strikes a dramatic pose in front of a psychedelic backdrop in Paschke’s portrait. “Ed took a few photographs of me at his studio and ended up using that pose. Even though it’s my face, the hair and costume I’m wearing were entirely his creation,” says Nancy of the painting, which was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing from July 2011 to February 2012. In the early ‘70s, Nancy and Bob

began acquiring the work of the Chicago Imagists, a group of young emerging artists that included Ed Paschke as well as Roger Brown, Jim Nutt and Gladys Nilsson. Since then, they have spent the last four decades building a thoughtfully considered collection of works by living artists. “Their work was generally more affordable, and we focused on what interested us,” she says of their impressive collection, which today includes art by Wolfgang Tillmans, John Currin, Sol LeWitt, Kehinde Wiley, Damien Hirst and Nan Goldin, in addition to many others. “To be independent in one’s choices, means taking the time and commitment to build your eye and develop a focus,” adds Nancy, of the couple’s journey as art collectors, one that also appears to inform her approach to dressing. A peek inside her wellorganized closet reveals an equally considered collection of garments with a distinct point of view. It includes a number of key pieces by designers known for their conceptual and craft-based approach to fashion, such as Hussein Chalayan, Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake. Her choices also demonstrate an affinity for designers who think like sculptors or fiber artists, by using construction techniques or surface treatments in unexpected ways. Among the gems in her wardrobe is Junya Watanabe’s hybrid tartan skirt sporting tiers of flounces and one pant-leg, in addition to a charcoal grey sweater with a 3D honeycomb construction, also by the experimental Japanese designer.

Nancy’s exposure to avant-garde fashion began in the early ‘90s, shortly after relocating to Houston, where she worked in risk management. “On weekends we’d walk around Saks Fifth Avenue, Nieman Marcus and even Chicago’s Marshall Field’s, which had a store there,” she recalls, of a time when Houston’s prominent department stores stocked the experimental designs of Claude Montana, Thierry Mugler, Issey Miyake and Romeo Gigli. “I was drawn to their clothes and started going to sales and acquiring #KarlLagerfeld @karllagerfeld @fashionresourcecenter @James.Prinz #JamesPrinzPhotography

pieces gradually, which I wore to art openings and at work,” says Nancy, noting that although she gravitated towards unconventional designs, the clothes had to be wearable. “I discovered this during the second weekend of Neiman Marcus’ Last Call in Houston, which was a huge sale that consolidated merchandise from their stores across the country. We were told they just put out garments from another box they found in the back,” says Nancy the next day in the Fashion Resource Center’s wardrobe. She’s holding up Issey Miyake’s tiered bouncing dress cut from four layers of the Japanese designer’s signature pleated fabric. Part of his Spring 1994 collection, the iconic design is one of many garments Nancy donated to the FRC over the years. They include a Karl Lagerfeld Fall 1993 chocolate brown skirt suit, with a jacket shaped like a corset, as well as a crimson

three-piece top from Italian designer Romeo Gigli’s Spring 1992 collection. During the couple’s travels, they sometimes came across museum exhibitions that would broaden their perspective on fashion as an applied art form. “I started thinking about fashion differently, as well as its place within broader conversations around contemporary art and design,” she says, while recalling one particular exhibition that resonated with her. “I was fascinated by the Radical Fashion exhibit at the V&A in London in 2001, which connected the dots between the work of designers such as Azzedine Alaïa, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and Martin Margiela with larger cultural, social and artistic movements,” adds Nancy, who continues to be drawn to designers who infuse their work with ideas that bridge the worlds of art and fashion. Nancy was introduced to the FRC in 2012, after seeing Material Translations, an exhibition of contemporary Japanese fashion held at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Ando Gallery. Curated by FRC’s former Director Gillion Carrara and Assistant Director Caroline Bellios, it highlighted exceptional pieces from its collection. “I noticed that a number of items had been donated by art collectors we knew such as Ruth Horwich and that they came from the Fashion Resource Center, which further sparked my curiosity,” says Nancy, who subsequently contacted Gillion to arrange for a tour of the FRC, as she wanted to donate designer pieces she no longer wore. During her visit, Nancy also learned about FRC’s dedicated team of volunteers, who are instrumental in maintaining the collection and building a

sense of community around it. “By that time, I’d moved back to Chicago and it felt like a wonderful opportunity to join FRC’s team, where I could further explore my interests in art and fashion,” she says, noting that she also enjoys interacting with the Fashion Department’s students and faculty as well as SAIC’s larger community. “I’ve been volunteering at the FRC for five years now, and I’m still amazed by the breadth and depth of its hands-on collection, which is unique for #COMMEdesGARCONS @commedesgarcons @fashionresourcecenter @James.Prinz #JamesPrinzPhotography

an institution of this kind in the United States because it’s so accessible,” she adds, while pointing out that the FRC stands apart from its peers as a powerful research hub, for its combined collection of vintage magazines, books, films, garments and accessories. “Similar to art collecting, you need to see examples of garments in person in order to fully understand and appreciate them. When I come here each week, it’s also an opportunity for me to grow intellectually and be a part of a community that’s presenting new perspectives on the world through the lens of fashion,” says Nancy, who continues to work with FRC’s team to create a dynamic and inclusive space where learning and curiosity are encouraged.

In its 85th year, the Department of Fashion Design at SAIC has evolved into a unique place to train the next generation of designers, artists, and thinkers. Our mission is to alert our graduates to the urgent issues of today and develop their voices to participate in global discourse. Our interdisciplinary approach to fashion is grounded in teaching technical, digital, artisanal, and visceral ways of making, pairing artistic exploration with concept development and skill-building.

C U R R I C U L A R PAT H WAYS CO R E FA S H I O N D E S I G N A N D CO N S T R U C T I O N The undergraduate fashion core curriculum pathway consists of a scaffolded sequence of co-taught design and construction courses at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels, providing a firm foundation in drawing, draping, patternmaking, and garment construction. In courses that combine historical research with contemporary explorations, students transcend the traditional boundaries of fashion to examine clothing as it relates to lifestyle, performance, display, costume, and art. B O DY- B U I L D E R Body-Builder pathway gives students the opportunity to specialize in their self-selected area of interest such as illustration, accessories, knitwear, embellishment, performance-oriented design, or foundation studies as part of the academic spine. FA S H I O N , B O DY A N D G A R M E N T The Fashion department offers two options for graduate study: — An invigorating, accelerated curriculum, the one-year intensive Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fashion, Body, and Garment prepares students for the rigor and challenge of a master’s program or professional work in the fashion industry. — SAIC’s groundbreaking Master of Design in Fashion, Body, and Garment moves beyond the merging of fine art with fashion design to explore the body in motion, on show, in suspension, in conversation, and immersed in the world.
