REGISTRATION

Course selection for your first year at SAIC



Registration for your first SAIC courses is exciting and easy. First semester registration is completed with your admission counselor via the methods listed below. Second semester registration is arranged with your academic advisor. Schedule a registration appointment: Beginning April 1st, contact the Admissions office between 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (CT) at 800.232.7242 or 312.629.6100, to schedule a registration appointment. Appointments are available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be made for phone or virtual (Zoom) registration options. If you schedule a phone appointment, an admission counselor will call you at the number you designate to help select your courses. For Zoom meetings you will receive the meeting room link via email. Appointments will last between 30–45 minutes. For a comprehensive view of SAIC curriculum and academic degree requirements, we encourage you to visit saic.edu/bulletin. The 2022-23 Bulletin will be available in late summer.


Freshman Registration Studio Courses CORE STUDIO I AND II: This yearlong sequence of team-taught classes teaches you about the methods, materials, tools and concepts in the areas of and techniques for surface (2D), space (3D) and time (4D) as interdisciplinary study. RESEARCH STUDIO I AND II: In this yearlong sequence, you will learn the critique process, and connect with other artists, the museum, Chicago, and SAIC. You will be paired with an academic advisor, who will attend several classes and work with you on navigating SAIC’s curriculum. STUDIO ELECTIVE: SAIC allows you to delve into your areas of interest with a studio elective in both your first and second semester. Do you want to explore a passion you already have, or expose yourself to something completely new and different? Choose from 18 departments, including Sound; Painting and Drawing; Architecture; Ceramics; Film, Video, New Media, and Animation; Performance; Visual Communication Design; Photography; Fashion; Art and Technology; and more.


Freshman Registration Placement in first year academic courses is based on a comprehensive assessment of application materials, including college entrance test scores and writing samples.* Freshmen who have consistently earned B level or higher grades in English, history, and social science courses, have sub-scores in ACT Reading of 22 or higher, or SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing of 560 or higher, may be placed into this combination of courses. ART HISTORY SURVEY All students must complete: ARTHI 1001, World Cultures and Civilizations: Pre-History-Nineteenth Century, and one other 1000-level Introductory Art History course.

FIRST YEAR SEMINAR Inspired by literature, history, anthropology, and sociology, theme-based First Year Seminar courses teach college-level writing, grammar, and composition.

Freshmen who have consistently earned lower than a B in high school English, history and/or social science courses and/or have sub-scores below ACT Reading 22 or 580 SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing may be placed into the Academic Access Program (AAP), which includes this combination of courses. AAP courses are intensive critical thinking, reading, and writing seminars and count towards liberal arts elective credit requirements. Once students successfully complete these courses, they go on to complete their English and art history requirements. FIRST SEMESTER Reading Art: Students advance their critical reading and thinking skills while investigating the formal and contextual elements of artworks. Foundations Writing Workshop: Students engage in the writing process, learn strategies for exploring topics, and develop their knowledge of the language of art and design.

SECOND SEMESTER First Year Seminar I (AAP): Students develop their critical reading and writing skills in these theme-based courses inspired by literary, historical, anthropological, and sociological disciplines.

International Registration & English for International Students (EIS) Some international students are required to complete Fluency and Critique classes to receive the necessary academic preparation for success in Art History and Liberal Arts courses. Placement in EIS is based on a comprehensive assessment of application materials, including college entrance test scores, educational records, and writing samples. Certain circumstances relating to citizenship and residency may require students to be placed into our Academic Access Program instead of EIS. International students may be waived out of EIS if they have the following test scores: TOEFL (iBT): 96 or above International Baccalaureate (IB) English A or B test score: 5 or above on the Higher-Level examinations

IELTS: 7.0 PTE: 65 or above or above SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 580 or above

Duolingo: 120 AP English: 4 or above or above ACT Reading: 22 or above

English Language Fluency I and II: You will gain competence and confidence in college-level writing and self-editing by reading and responding to art history texts, and analyzing formal and contextual information. Presentations and class discussions will help develop your verbal communication skills. Critique classes: You will build your competence in the critique process, participating in class discussions, and giving presentations. *Academic Advising highly recommends enrolling in these four classes or 12 credit hour course load.

After completing Fluency courses students also take two semesters of EIS Tutorials in conjunction with their First Year Seminar 1 and ARTHI 1000-level courses. Small-group tutoring sessions provide additional assistance to support transition into academic coursework. EISKEY classes count towards the liberal arts and general elective credit requirements, and are offered during the summer for students who wish to start EIS classes early. Entrance Parking

Transfer Registration As a transfer student, you will receive individualized assistance in developing a schedule that meshes your previous academic history with your goals as an SAIC student. Research Studio for Transfers: All incoming transfer students are required to take this one semester class incorporating a variety of research methodologies, both traditional and experimental. This course utilizes SAIC archives and the community in response to studio-based conversations. Students receive an orientation to both the SAIC and Chicago community. In addition, students are connected with an Academic Advisor to help guide them in their individualized course of study. Core Studio for Transfers: This one semester elective course is highly recommended for transfer students who are coming to SAIC with little or no studio credit, or a narrow range of experience with diverse media. Core Studio introduces you to disciplinary and interdisciplinary art and design practices, as well as methods, materials, tools and concepts in the areas of Surface (2D), Space (3D), and Time (4D). You must have completed or transferred in the equivalent of 6 credit hours of English before enrolling in Natural or Social Sciences or Humanities courses to fulfill your Liberal Arts degree requirements AND completed or transferred in 6 credit hours of Art History Surveys (World Cultures/Civilizations: Prehistory to Nineteenth Century AND any 10021020 ARTHI Modern Survey course) before enrolling in Art History Electives (any 20004000 level ARTHI course).
