The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) Early College Program (ECP) invites you to join us at the nation’s most influential art and design school this summer. All students in grades 9–12 may register for noncredit. Students who have completed their sophomore year have the option of enrolling for one college credit per course. 2 | saic.edu/ecp

SUMMER 2020 CLASSES REGISTER ONLINE at continuingstudies.saic.edu

Advanced Projects (AUGUST 3-14, M-F, 1-4, #1281) For students with previous experience, a deep interest in the visual arts and a desire to work on individual projects, this course will allow you to explore the media of your choice with an emphasis on interdisciplinary practice. Ideal for building a portfolio.

Animation Studio (AUGUST 3-14, M-F,

Architecture: Design & Drawing (JULY 6-17, M-F, 9-12, #1217) With Chicago as inspiration, you will learn basic architectural drawing, perspective, drafting techniques, and 3D modeling. You will create a final piece that may include prints and drawings, 3D physical models, laser-cut digital models, and 3D printed models. No experience necessary.

Artist Books (AUGUST 3-14, M-F, 1-4, #1220) You will be using traditional and digital methods to publish your own limited-edition books and/ or zines. Basic Adobe Photoshop and InDesign software, printing from low-and high-quality printers using a variety of papers, and a range of bookbinding methods are introduced. No previous experience is necessary.

9-12, #1275) Explore traditional and digital animation techniques, such as frame-by-frame, paper cutout, claymation stop-motion, digital hand-drawn, and 3D animation to complete several projects. **NOTE: Basic drawing and computer experience required.

Comics and Graphic Novels (AUGUST 3-14, M-F, 1-4, #1257) You will learn storyboarding, penciling, and inking/coloring, as well as multiple methods of print and online presentation. Traditional as well as digital drawing methods are explored, and may include pencil, pen, ink, Wacom tablets, Adobe Photoshop, and/or Adobe Illustrator. *Previous drawing experience required.

Creative Writing (JULY 6-17, M-F, 9-12, #1294)

Digital Photo I (JUNE 22-26, M-F, 9-4, #1291; AUGUST 3-14, M-F, 9-12, #1292) You will be focusing on technical skills, communicating your ideas through photographs, and creating high-quality prints using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop software, Canon inkjet printers, and high-resolution laser printers. Students must provide their own digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera that has manual control options (no point-and-shoot cameras).

Fashion Construction (AUGUST 3-14, M-F,

Fashion Design (AUGUST 3-14, M-F, 9-12, #1268) You will gain skills in fashion illustration, draping, and developing patterns, as well as gaining exposure to contemporary designers and the history of individual garments.

1-4, #1269) You will be designing, constructing, and sewing your own garments from start to finish utilizing a wide variety of materials such as paper, muslin, second hand clothing, and fabric off the bolt.

Learn how to craft short stories, monologues, poetry and personal essays, as well as edit, revise and workshop your writing with your peers. Push your skills through journaling, free writing, writing through music, digging through memories and dreams, and other methods of responding to the world in written form.

#1266; JULY 20–31, M-F, 9-12, #1267) Develop drawing skills and fashion illustration techniques with an emphasis on individual style and expression, inspired by live and clothed models and garments from SAIC’s Fashion Resource Center. Previous drawing experience is helpful.

JULY 6–17, M-F, 9-12, #1251; AUG 3-14, M-F, 9-12 #1254) Working from the nude model, you will learn how to draw the human form from direct observation and gain skills in representing proportion, volume, composition, gesture, and the accurate and expressive use of line and tone.

From Drawing to Painting (JUNE 22-26, M-F, 9-4, #1289) Transition from drawing to acquiring painting skills such as line, volume, space, materiality, form and function, and palette using a variety of traditional and contemporary materials. This course is recommended for both beginners and those wanting to improve and develop their current abilities.

Moving Images (JUNE 22–26, M-F, 9-4, #1273; AUG 3-14, M-F, 1-4, #1274) Explore video production, motion graphics, and animation using traditional processes such as sketchbooking, alongside digital applications such as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere in combination with equipment such as hand-held cameras and digital drawing tablets. No experience is needed for this course, but computer familiarity is very helpful.

Tuition Audit (noncredit) course: $465 1.0 college credit (student must have completed their sophomore year): $1,666 Tuition does not include supplies. Students provide their own supplies and will receive a material list on the first day of class. Supplies vary by class and can range from $50–$200. Note: College credit must be declared prior to the second class.

Refund Policy Please visit saic.edu/ecp to review our refund policy. Please note that all withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing to cs@saic.edu and include the student’s name, ID number, and course information.

Financial Assistance Financial Assistance is available in the form of need-based aid and scholarship opportunities where need is not a requirement. Note: Students must apply for financial assistance at the time of registration. Once registered for a particular term, students may not retroactively apply for financial assistance.

Need-Based Aid Limited need-based aid is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants must submit a completed financial aid form, financial documentation, a completed registration form, and a $50 tuition deposit. Financial documentation may include a copy of the family’s most recent tax return, proof of unemployment, Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statement, or Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) medical card.

Grace and Walter Byron Smith Scholarship The Smith Scholarship covers a percentage of tuition for any ECP course. To be eligible, students must have attended a parochial high school in Illinois for at least one full academic year. Applicants must submit a completed financial aid form including their parochial high school and years attended, and a completed registration form. Note: Financial documentation is not necessary. ECP Chicago Youth Artist Scholarship Founded in 2012, the ECP Chicago Youth Artist Educational Scholarship is a needand merit-based fund that will benefit Chicago Public Schools high school students enrolled in the Early College Program. The scholarship will cover 100 percent tuition for a fall, spring, or summer class. Applicants must submit the ECP registration form, the Chicago Youth Artist Educational Scholarship Application, a portfolio, one letter of recommendation, and financial documentation.
