Cité du design : design puts down roots ! The Cité du design is open to the general public. It is a higher education establishment and a facility for research, experiments, company support and conferences. The lively and vibrant establishment also hosts temporary exhibitions.

Key facts

The Cité du design was designed by architects Finn Geipel and Giulia Andi to bring together renovated buildings (former arms factory) and modern installations such as the Platine : lecture theatre, exhibition rooms, resource centre, shop, designer’s office and even an Observation Tower.

An exceptional event The Biennial welcomes the general public to exhibitions, seminars, conferences and festive activities from March 14th to 31st 2013.

Musée d’Art Moderne (MAM) : a window into modern and regional artists Important information Every year the Musée d’Art Moderne hosts 3 major exhibitions : an opportunity to embark on a journey into modern art. Every day the museum hosts individual workshops, conferences, guided tours and so much more.

Must-sees At the Musée d’Art Moderne, Saint-Etienne artists such as Elzevir, Eric Manigaud, Sylvia Marquet and Gaëlle Vicherd are exhibited at Local Line exhibitions alongside international artists such as Boltanski, Dietman, Pinaud, Oldenburg and many more. An enriching and exciting experience.

I just can’t get enough ! The MAM shop sells major modern artworks, exhibition catalogues, periodicals, postcards and associated products along with a selection of pieces from current exhibitions. Recharge your batteries at the museum’s restaurant and sample its inventive seasonal dishes (Monday to Friday from midday to 3.30pm) or relax in the tea room (Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 5:30pm).

Site Le Corbusier : unique in Europe Key facts The Firminy Vert project received the urban planning "Grand Prix d’Urbanisme" award in 1961 and has over a thousand residences whose design was inspired by the Athens Charter. It is one of the most accomplished examples of Le Corbusier’s urban theories in Europe.

Absolute must-see The "centre de récréation du corps et de l’esprit" includes the Maison de la Culture, stadium, André Wogensky designed swimming pool and Saint-Pierre church whose "three beams of light" provide incredible lighting and acoustics ! Musée de la Mine : delve into the mining world

Don’t forget to book your visit, especially during the week !

The museum takes children and adults on a moving journey through everyday life on the mines in the heart of the last mine shafts in the Loire. The mine shafts were built from 1910 onwards and were operational until 1973.

City Tour 1 : walk through Saint-Etienne and explore its design roots ! 1 1 st stage of the 1.2 km walk : Châteaucreux Square A real outdoor art gallery with fascinating pieces from Philippe Million’s multi-colour tree to Assan Smati’s blue horses. Continue to the Georges Salendre’s "Fusillée" sculpture and the stunning "Tabourets" by François Bauchet.

2 The Ilot Grüner building (by Manuelle Gautrand) won’t fail to amaze you. The single unit is partly on the ground and partly in the air. 3 Chavanelle Square opens up a world of modern artwork such as Gyslain Bertholon and Maxime Bourgeaux’s "‘R’ du large", "Les colosses" by Yannick Vey, the "Pouet" by Remi Jacquier and "Pas à pas" by Dugave Chantal. Just minutes from the tramway (T1 to "Terrasse") you’ll find the Cité du design and the Observation Tower designed by Finn Geipel and Guilia Andi. Nature Tour 1 : feel the magic of the Gorges de la Loire ! Explore the Gorges de la Loire on a 28 km driving and walking tour. Dive into the untamed landscapes, ecological treasures and villages nestled in greenery that the natural heritage site has to offer.

1 Village of Saint-Victor-sur-Loire Its ancient stone houses (17th century) reflect the village’s history. Don’t forget to visit the peaceful haven that is the church and the impressive château.

Get your bearings : head towards the harbour at the bottom of the village.

5 Village of Chambles Have a walk around this charming medieval village perched on high ! Get your bearings : take the D108 to Unieux.

The Bridge of the Bicentenary of the Revolution in Pertuiset (Unieux) 6 The bridge was opened in 1989 and has incredible views of the Gorges de la Loire.

2 Saint-Victor-sur-Loire Harbour Over 300 boats moor here every year making it one of the biggest inland ports in France. The lake’s 365 hectares are ideal for swimming, water sports and fishing !

Get your bearings : retrace your steps and take the D25 then the D32.

3 Dam of Grangent, Belvedere on island of Grangent At the foot of the road stand Grangent tower, fortress and chapel. These buildings were once on a rocky outcrop but have stood on an island in the middle of the Gorges since the dam filling.

Get your bearings : take the D108 to Chambles then to Château d’Essalois ( 6.8 km).

The Château d’Essalois 4 The Château d’Essalois overlooks the Lake of Grangent on the other side of the dam. You can see the charming hamlet of Camaldules from the foot of the lakeside of the castle.

Nature Tour 2 : Pilat Nature Park, a taste of the great outdoors This fabulous mountain range is ideal for sports throughout the year and is a veritable treasure chest that simply begs to be uncovered. It is home to Pilat Regional Nature Park whose landscapes are as diverse as its history.

1 Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez : listed as one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France" This unique village lies on the buttresses of the Pilat mountain range. You will find former hermitages transformed into homes. The monastery became a village in 1793 and is a unique example of the transformation of a religious setting into a non-religious environment.

4 Rochetaillée : high in the hills This little village proudly overlooks the impressive Vallée du Furan. During your visit we recommend walking the wall-walk and the garden stairs. The Barrage de Roche-

taillée, also known as the Gouffre d’Enfer dam, was opened in 1866 and is the perfect place for a walk among fir trees and cliff sides.

2 La Maison des Tresses et Lacets  : see the machines in action In the heart of the Vallée du Dorlay you will find over 50 wooden looms bringing the age-old manufacture of laces, strings, braids, rickracks and trims to life. Spools and reels in a myriad of colours get to work and weave a wonderful web of a show.

Explore the nearby Vallée du Gier The Vallée du Gier is full of surprises and just a few kilometres from SaintEtienne. Start off with a walk on Saint-Ennemond Hill in Saint-Chamond (15 km from Saint-Etienne - road to Lyon).

Visit Saint-Martin-la-Plaine Zoo 12 hectares, pretty plants, over 100 species and 850 animals from Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. The park helps to protect threatened and endangered species. Please note : the zoo is also involved in the Lesio-Lounae Project which supports the Congolese authorities in the fight against baby gorilla poaching.
