Class of 2015 Hosts Wine & Cheese Party The senior class hosted the annual Wine & Cheese event on September 26, 2014 at el Horreo de V. Suarez,. This is quickly becoming one of the main events for seniors and their families. Three years ago this event was created to supplant the anachronistic “Senior Auction”, which was last done in 2011. The “Wine & Cheese” is a cocktail party that brings together the parents, students, the community (and many parents and families from outside) in a major event to socialize as we kickoff the new school year. This year the event was also used to auction the original painting by renown Puerto Rican painter Carmelo Sobrino commemorating 100 years of excellence at SJS.

2014 Standardized Test Results Presentation For Parents Mrs. Lorraine Lago, Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning presented and analyzed the standardized tests results from 2014 on Wednesday, September 17 to a small group of parents on September 17 at 7:00 PM. The presentation included the results of the CTP4, PSAT, SAT, AP and SEPA exams. The remarkable scores by SJS students were highlighted in an article in the Caribbean Business about top private schools in Puerto Rico (right). The results this year were particularly noteworthy in the SAT, and they were equally laudable in the AP exams. In the SAT, SJS students scored a mean of 1845, which is over 400 points above the mean score of test takers in Puerto Rico (all private schools) and 300 points above the mean scores of test takers across the nation. In the AP exams, SJS had the highest number of students taking AP courses in seven years and 93% of these students achieved 3 or higher, compared to an average of 68% of AP test takers in Puerto Rico and 64% in the nation who achieved that score. Slightly over 20 % of all AP tests taken in PR were accounted for by students from SJS. Quarter 1—August & September

FAMILY DAY 2014 Saturday 15, 2014 – the evolution of Friendship Day, which had been celebrated in the SJS campus the last few years, is now the Family Day. It has the aim of bringing the families of all grades together in a day of friendship and camaraderie. This year the event was celebrated at Hacienda Campo Rico, located about 20 minutes east of SJS and a very comfortable drive from anywhere in the metro area. Some of the activities included inflatables, zip lining (for young kids and for older kids and adults), all-terrain vehicle rides, horse back riding, great food, beverages and a very festive atmosphere. The setting, the atmosphere, the excitement and the fun made it an amazing day. An estimated 1,000 guests attended and the great memories will last a lifetime.

Engineering Class for 12th Grade The Principles of Engineering class is taught by Mr. David Henner and it is an elective course that is taken as the science class by many seniors interested in the STEM fields. This year the class has had four guest speakers so far. Mr. Jorge Fuentes gave an introduction to engineering and used as a case study the difficulties experienced during the remodeling of the library last year and the challenges faced. Mr. Luis Torres of Fe Ri Construction introduced students to

CAD drawings. Mr. William Reichard showed students some of the problems involved with constraints in engineering design. Students saw schematics and plans for engineering and are well on their way to having a basic orientation as to what the field of engineering may entail for them. Mr. David Sanabria lead a presentation on the history of engineering discussing important periods in history and how developments in engineering changed the course of mankind.

Community Service Days for Secondary Division Students The Community Service Program for Secondary Division Students is being approached using a different model, where students will leave schools in groups during designated days to different sites they selected previously to perform service. This program is a cornerstone of the experience at SJS so thus it has integrated it to the school day. It also ensures there is commitment to a cause as they will visit the same sites throughout the year in these “CS Days. So far these have been a tremendous success, and the feedback from the students is simply amazing. The written reflections they complete upon returning are compelling and are indicative the experience is fulfilling and most worthwhile. Many have created special bonds and are eager to return. The logistics and coordination are being made possible by the efforts of Mrs. Karen Humbert, SJS CS Coordinator and a small army of parent volunteers involved in the entire process.
