From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

“Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Matthew 10:39)

Charitable works are an intrinsic part of the life of a Christian. The Scriptures and teachings of the Church constantly exhort us to give of ourselves for the good of others. In our Gospel today, Jesus Himself reminds us that hospitality to a prophet and a believer brings blessings to the life of the giver. St. James reminds us that ”faith without works is dead.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) reminds us “faith requires of us a personal act-the free response of the human person to the initiative of God who reveals Himself (166). We must seek out Jesus and to know Him we have to live like Him. Jesus spoke often, especially in the Gospel of St. John, of the importance of love. For us, as believers, love and how we live out that love must have the component of how that is expressed in our service to others. All faith must be rooted in grace, which is a participation in the life of God. This is lived out in our works of kindness and mercy to our brothers and sisters in need. In St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus separates the goats from the sheep. The sheep (those who do good works) are invited into the Kingdom while the goats (those who refuse to assist those in need) are condemned to hell.

With this in mind, there needs to be a caution and challenge for us. We can sometimes see “good works” as the only criteria for us to act. If we go back to the words of St. James that faith without good works is dead, then we have to build on that. Good works without faith are simply good works. This reduces what we are commanded to do to simply humanitarian actions. For us, there must be something deeper. What is the criteria; certainly good works, but good works done how? Jesus says when I was hungry, naked, and imprisoned and you fulfilled these, you did them for and to ME. That is the key. It is doing and acting in the name of and for JESUS Himself. Good works and charity are important when they flow from our faith in Jesus.

There is sometimes a tendency to think that if we do good works then we are good Catholics. Remember that you don’t have to be Christian to do good works. Many non-Christians and even non-believers can do good works. For us, there must be the constant reminder of in whose name we do acts of charity. It should flow from our belief that Jesus is Lord and Savior. We must condition our minds and hearts to name the reason we serve one another.

Wasn’t this lived out in a very concrete way during the COVID-19 pandemic? With the suspension of Holy Mass and Communion, we “suffered” for the sake of our sisters and brothers. We laid down what was and is so important to us to protect the vulnerable and, in a real way, died to self. I know the medical and essential workers are very grateful for our sacrifice. Jesus says in the Gospel today, “For My sake” we are called to act. It is then through and because of Jesus, as the fruit of our faith, when works of service take on a deeper meaning. They become the works of our salvation and a return to the Lord for all He has done. Continue your generous acts…just remember in whose name you act.

I want to thank Fr. Kingsley Nwanwa for his dedicated service to our parish. He has been assigned to St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington to minster to the Spanish-speaking community. We welcome back Fr. Rafal Borowiejski, a son of our parish, who was ordained a priest of our diocese three years ago. He has completed his first assignment at Our Lady of Victory in Floral Park and should be here this week barring a possible visa renewal complication. We also welcome Fr. Edward Obi, MSP, a priest of the Missionary Society of St. Paul, who will be with us for a year. I know you will welcome him as you do to all the priests who serve the parish.

As we celebrate our Independence Day, let us be mindful of our freedoms and those who sacrificed for them. Let us continue to pray for our Freedom of Religion. Let us pray for an end of violence in our cities so that dialogue may take place. We also pray for those who feel excluded from society.

Rosary Society

Our Mission Statement:

The Rosary Society fosters devotion to Mary through prayer and good works for causes that would be dear to her heart

Invest 20 minutes of your day to pray the Rosary, and see the difference it will make in your life.

If you would like the Rosarians to pray for a special intention, please e-mail us at rosarysociety@stmary.ws.

On June 27th we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour)

Just as the Child Jesus fled into the arms of his Mother when he was frightened, so too do we flee into the arms of our Blessed Mother with child-like confidence whenever fear envelopes our hearts. Just as the Virgin Mother consoled and comforted her Divine Child, so too does she console and comfort us, her spiritual children, in our afflictions. We can always come to her in our time of need and receive her help.

Mary’s Making Moves: Middle School Advances to Immaculata Hall

Since St. Mary’s Elementary School’s opening in 1926, generations of youth from Manhasset and neighboring communities have benefited from a faith-filled, rigorous, and cheerful Catholic education at 1340 Northern Boulevard, from early childhood all the way through to 8th grade. After graduating from the Elementary School, students had previously moved on to two separate High School buildings, Immaculata and Marist Halls. However, as part of a massive campus-wide reimagining, Fr. Bob has made moves to redesign and repurpose the third floor of Marist Hall so that the entire High School academic operation can take place in Marist, leaving Immaculata Hall open for the Middle School to advance to.

With four floors of features that are ‘move-in ready,’ including a gymnasium, cafeteria and outdoor patio, auditorium, chorus and band rooms, dance and art studios, along with Biology and Chemistry labs, Immaculata Hall is built for students who are looking to grow in independence at a critical time in their development: middle school. Over the summer, renovations will also take place to add a Chapel, student common area, and literacy resource room, rounding out the first phase of the Middle School’s advancement and move to Immaculata Hall.

MARY’S MAKING MOVE WITH US MOVES

In recent years, both anecdotal evidence and quantitative data have proven that parents desire a middle school experience for their children that is enriching, challenging and mature but also age appropriate and in an intimate setting - no student is overlooked or left behind. While this has always been true of the St. Mary’s Middle School (grades 6-8), the move to Immaculata Hall and the programming that follows will take a step further in challenging the students to grow in independence and take on more responsibility, ultimately better preparing them for high school and beyond. With strong home-school communication and parent partnership, this incredible opportunity for growth in St. Mary’s Middle School is stirring up a lot of excitement among current Middle School students and their families, as well as Middle School faculty and administration. Principal Theresa Kemp stated, “Having Immaculata Hall dedicated for Middle School will allow us to carry on in a small, familiar setting while also fostering a culture of achievement that is specific to middle school students through positive peer influence, collaborative classrooms, stronger recognition of accomplishments, and age-appropriate celebrations.”

At St. Mary’s Middle School, every student has the potential to excel and achieve greatness, and part of that is having high expectations for academic and personal development. Make the move to St. Mary’s Middle School and learn more about the incomparable Catholic education available by calling the Main Office at 516-6270184. Registration for September 2023 is rolling.

St. Mary’s Elementary School Principal Theresa Kemp and Assistant Principal Michelle Tripi map out the calendar of moves to Immaculata Hall as part of the exciting summer transition for the new Middle School.

With four distinct programs, St. Mary’s is ready to pave the way for the next chapter of Catholic Education on Long Island. 2-K

The Schools of Saint Mary Graduation Mass & Cermony Held for Middle School

On Friday, June 9, 2023, the eighth-graders of St. Mary’s Elementary School gathered for their last Eucharistic celebration as a class on Denihan Field. The Graduation Mass celebrated by Father Bob together with Fr. Elias and Fr. Dominik beautifully marked the occasion as family members, administrators, faculty, and staff attended to pray with the graduating class, which was then followed by the commencement ceremony. Typically held as two separate events, the School once again showed strength in pivoting to combine the celebrations due to the extreme air quality conditions caused by wildfires in Canada that settled in the northeast earlier that week.

Principal Theresa Kemp opened the ceremony by welcoming all of the attendees, which included several legacy families. The invocation was delivered by Fr. Dominik, who serves as the Chaplain for the Schools of St. Mary. Special awards were announced, including two Honorary Awards named for Anne Salzman and Matteo Diaz, teacher, and student, respectively, who were beloved school community members. Mr. Doug Salzman, husband of the late faculty member Mrs. Salzman, and Mrs. Rita Diaz, mother of the late Matteo, were invited to the podium by Mrs. Kemp for the presentations. Assistant Principal Michelle Tripi announced the Class Agents for 2023 who came forward to participate in the traditional sealing of their time capsule, which contains a letter from each student to their future selves. The distribution of diplomas took place, followed by Father Bob’s address to the graduates and the final blessing. The Class of 2023 earned $950,000 in academic scholarships to St. Mary’s High School and other secondary institutions in the area. We could not be more proud of this entire class and joyfully welcome them to our St. Mary’s alum community! ■

to make a gift on behalf of the class of 2023 or for information regarding the honorary awards and corresponding named scholarships in this article, please contact mr. edward short, vice president of development: eshort@stmary.ws or call 516-627-2711.

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

In today’s Gospel hear Jesus tell us: “Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—Amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

This week, know that you will bringing hope to the poor by your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?

We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.

Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism. We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.

It’s one thing to say who you are.

It’s another thing is to live it.

Put your values into practice.

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Prayer in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

I adore You, Bread from Heaven. I adore You, Bread of Angels. I adore You, My Jesus, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. (Pause for silent adoration.)

I adore You, Jesus, my true life because You died for love of me. I adore You, Jesus, Divine Light because You show me the way to heaven. I adore You, Jesus, Divine Lamb, Who takes away the sin of the world. (Pause for silent adoration.)

My God and Savior Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, I firmly believe that You are really and bodily present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. From the very depths of my heart, I adore You. (Pause for silent adoration.)

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith.
