Photographers occasionally discover a scene that grabs their attention and demands to be documented. Lowertown Fire Escapes was one of those scenes for me. Due to harsh midday light, my first exposures of the escapes were unsatisfactory. I returned to its location across the street from Saint Paul’s Mears Park on a lovely, but overcast day. The diffused light was perfect for the evenly lit, shadowless image that resulted. The photograph’s success, which consistently evokes comments about its “West Side Story” feeling, is the result of several diverse elements: the dominant red fire escape staircase, the multi-colored doors and windows, the variations in the brickwork, and the contrasting nondescript fire escape and coloring of the building on the right-hand side combining to complement each other. St. Paul’s Only Major Art Museum Opens Its Doors in Lowertown This December By Susannah Schouweiler
Rendering of the new M’s front entrance, courtesy VJAA and the Minnesota Museum of American Art.
Art-lovers who live, work, or play in Lowertown, St. Paul are getting an early holiday gift this year: the brand new Minnesota Museum of American Art (“the M”) will open its doors to the public on Sunday, December 2. Grand opening festivities will include a full day of free, familyfriendly experiences in the M’s brand new facility: artmaking, performances, artist talks, and curator-led tours through the inaugural exhibitions and freshly renovated spaces of the new museum facility, housed in the Historic Pioneer Endicott. There will be a ticketed preview party on Saturday night for those interested, a swanky sneak peek. The museum’s grand opening is a milestone that’s been years in the making. Since 2013, the M has organized touring shows and presented nationally recognized exhibitions and programs in its Project Space gallery, in the Historic Pioneer Endicott on the corner of 4th and 30
Robert Streets. All the while, behind the scenes, civic leaders, community supporters, trustees, and M staff have also been fundraising, planning, and mobilizing city and state support to realize the dream of building a permanent home for the museum in this historic location. The M is one of the oldest visual arts organizations in Minnesota, with roots stretching back to the 19th century. The museum boasts an ever-growing collection of more than 4,500 works of American art. It’s a collection particularly rich in artworks by distinguished Minnesota artists, past and present; Native American artists; and midcentury studio craft. The M’s history in St. Paul has been a restless one – in the course of its 100-plus years, the M has operated out of 13 spaces around the city, under seven different names. What’s more, since the museum lost its previous space on Kellogg Boulevard in 2008, most continued on page 54

installation for the M’s new Sculpture Court. Sheila Pepe: Softly…Before the Supreme Court refers to renowned architect Cass Gilbert, who designed the Endicott building housing the new museum as well as the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington D.C. (among many other notable sites around the country). Pepe’s monumental crocheted shapes for the M’s Sculpture Court will offer a soft, gestural rejoinder to two landmark buildings by one of America’s most famous architects. The M will animate the streetscape with its new Window Gallery facing Robert Street. For the first installation in the Window Gallery, David Bowen: wave line, Duluth-based multimedia artist David Bowen is capturing real-time wave videos from locations all over the world, and then channeling the data into large screens lit by thousands of LEDs. Passersby will see the virtual undulation of water washing up on shorelines all over the globe – a view on distant shores, as seen through the M’s windows in St. Paul. A New Making and Learning Space The museum’s Sifo Center for Creativity, named for the St. Paul-based Sifo Toy Company, also opens with the M in December. The M began as a school of art, and the museum is reviving that legacy with 4,000 square feet devoted to arts education. The new M will offer a variety of studio classes geared for adult learners, including: drawing, oil painting, Hmong embroidery, rope-stitch jewelry, weaving, ceramic Mesoamerican flute-making, and more. Instructors include local artists at the top of their game: Xilam Balam, Leslie Barlow, Suzanne Thao, Maggie Thompson, Megan Vossler, and others. The M will also offer summer youth workshops in 2019. In addition to studio art and craft classes for adults and youth, the Sifo Center for Creativity will be home to community convenings, drop-in art-making, family activities, and rotating Artist Takeovers. The M’s new Artist Takeover residency program empowers artists of all disciplines to shape the M’s learning spaces as makers, teachers, and
creative catalysts. The M’s first Artist Takeover will be led by Rebekah Crisanta de Ybarra, a local artist and co-founder of Electric Machete Studios. She’ll be involved in both class instruction and her own art-making on-site, working in Latinx and Indigenous art forms. The M’s grand opening on December 2 will make accessible 20,000 square feet of exhibition, learning, and gathering spaces. Then, in late 2019, the museum will expand further, with the opening of its permanent collection galleries. Upon completion of this second phase of construction, the new M will eventually cover 36,000 square feet of space on the first floor of the Pioneer Endicott. "This museum, nestled in the heart of St. Paul’s bustling urban center, holds so much promise for the community,", says the M’s Executive Director Kristin Makholm. It’s a boon for city’s residents, workers, and visitors, artists and arts-lovers – a beautiful new space for people to discover themselves and their community through American art. “This is our opportunity to build a place honoring the all unique voices and experiences of American artists and visitors alike. The new M is built, from the ground up, with the values of a 21st-century museum at its core—accessibility for all, intergenerational learning and community exchange, support of living artists, and responsible stewardship of a great collection for generations to come.” For more information about the new Minnesota Museum of American Art, visit mmaa.org, or follow @mnmuseum on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Welcome!
Hello, Welcome to the Saint Paul Art Crawl! On behalf of the artists, volunteers, and the community, I thank you for visiting and supporting the arts in St. Paul. We have a vibrant art scene in the city because of your support and patronage. The Art Crawl is in its 27th year and continues to grow every season with new artists, locations, events, and art! Each crawl weekend is a great time in the city and allows people to see the city’s neighborhoods in an artistic way. I invite you to explore other Art Crawl destinations and really take in all that is happening throughout the weekend. We have a few events of note that I would like to share with visitors. The Raymond Station District of the Saint Paul Art Crawl is doing a district tour of the area. If you have never been to a crawl before, this is a great introduction. The tour is hosted by a comedy troupe and will take you to different destinations, talk about how to participate, and give you the ins and outs of the best way to enjoy the Art Crawl. Check out the Event Guide for more information! We invite visitors to the Northern Warehouse in Lowertown to stop into #206 and learn more about the St. Paul Art Collective, which is the 501(c)3 organization that produces the crawl and other events in St Paul. Support the arts; get free art. If you become a member or make a donation to the Collective, you will receive a piece of art, vintage poster, or art class certificate as a thank you. Come see the wonderful work donated by member artists and hear about what the Collective has done for the artists of St. Paul.
The month of October is Hispanic Heritage Month and to celebrate the Saint Paul Art Crawl is sponsoring the Other Exhibit at the Schmidt Artist Lofts. The Other Exhibit is about checking an ethnicity box that lumps all Hispanic/Latino peoples together, even though they are from different countries, different cultures, different languages even. The exhibit will showcase different points of view through beautiful art. We are excited to present this for visitors and hope that you can check out the opening on October 6 from 7 - 9 pm in the Landmark Gallery at the Schmidt Artist Lofts. I want to close by thanking the staff and volunteers that make this event possible. I also want to thank all the Artists that participate in the Crawl and call St Paul home. You provide a wonderful and rich cultural experience year-round that makes the Art Crawl and St Paul truly wonderful. Thank you! Josh Intemann President of St Paul Art Collective Board of Directors
