Welcome to the Spring 2018 Saint Paul Art Crawl On behalf of the artists, volunteers and St Paul Art Collective, I want to welcome you to the 2018 Spring Art Crawl! This is the 27th year of the Art Crawl and the 41st anniversary of the St Paul Art Collective. With the number of participating artists now exceeding 400 and the number of visitors averaging around 38,000 for each semi-annual, three-day event. It is truly one of the premiere arts events in the Twin Cities. The Saint Paul Art Crawl has evolved from a fun weekend art event to a framework for creating and fostering important, interdependent relationships between the arts community and the residents and businesses of the city of St. Paul. The Art community in St Paul is vibrant and growing each year. The community of artists, art patrons, and supporting businesses adds to the rich cultural history of St. Paul making the St Paul Art Crawl a great event. As the community grows we add new venues, new events, and bring more artists into the Crawl. Over the years SPAC has started and participated in many projects in St Paul but the Art Crawl is always at the front of our organization and the community. Artists enjoy the opportunity to welcome you into their space to show art and we enjoy hearing from visitors about the art they purchased or event they attended during the crawl. I want to thank all the artists and volunteers for their hard work before, during, and after the crawl, it would not happen without all of you! This spring we have some exciting new locations and events on the Art Crawl: The George Latimer Central Library is having an exhibit of student artists from the Creative Arts Secondary School in downtown St Paul.
Creators Space at 218 7th Street in downtown St Paul (corner of 7th Street & Wacouta) is a new arts center for Lowertown that offers a coffeehouse, classes, gallery space and artist workspaces for a wide range of artistic disciplines. They will be hosting guest artists in their 34,000 square foot space and telling visitors about their opportunities to think, learn and explore. TruArtSpeaks, a non-profit that works with about 30 schools in the metro area, has a scheduled spoken word performance for us. They will be sending student poets into Indigenous Roots, check out the Event Guide for the performance time. The Virginia Street Church at 170 Virginia St in St Paul will be hosting artists. Built in 1886, the beautiful Victoria Street Swedenborgian Church was designed by Cass Gilbert, the St. Paul architect who later became famous for designing the Minnesota State Capitol. Burning Brothers Brewery at 1750 Thomas Ave W in St Paul will feature local artists along with totally gluten-free beer and food trucks. Also new for the Spring 2018 Art Crawl are a new feature called District Tours. The Fearless Comedy Productions will be giving one tour on Saturday and one on Sunday in the Raymond Station district. The walking tours will explore 4 locations, giving the history of the area and some insider information on each building, along with some visitor etiquette when touring studios. This piece is an exploration of urban landscapes and the energy they create. I’m interested in how that energy is visualized. Cities can be chaotic experiences and the challenge is to produce an equivalent feeling. Fracturing the subject matter creates the visual energy and also adds the necessary chaos. One of the problems of functioning in an urban environment is how to organize the chaos. One of the ways to do that in the real world is to use grids, either on street maps or even in the actual organization of streets in the initial urban plan. I use grids in these paintings as a nod in that direction. Artistically the grid provides an organizing static visual to contrast with the underlying asymmetrical chaos of the fractured subject matter. I have also tried to stay away from static “pretty” compositions in favor of more diagonals and oblique collaging, going more in the direction of a raw “street photography” approach, such as in Gary Winogrand’s work.

Celebrity portrait artist, Anthony R. Whelihan, has made his mark on the contemporary art community with his bold use of color, signature style and captivating imagery. Whelihan has been commissioned by the NFL, Nascar, Disney, U.S. Open, Timberwolves, Nobel Conference and numerous celebrities in film, music, sports and theater. Whelihan’s largest commission work “Seasons of the City”, commissioned by Ameriprise, is the wall mural on the Minneapolis Convention Center building. At 5,500 square feet, and 3.5 stories tall, it is one of the largest murals on canvas in the world. Whelihan’s work is bold, imaginative, volatile and yet introspective. To experience the work is to experience the artist himself. Learning to Look, is the Vision to See.

Dulcey Heller is a maker and an avid member of the local art/craft community. A long-time public librarian, she has also worked and volunteered for art libraries. Textile arts are her primary creative focus. Dulcey’s first medium is seed beads and thread. She is also attracted to creating forms in the fascinating medium of glass. Recently, she added weaving to her studio practice. Her artistic and creative interests are far ranging, and she has enjoyed the many opportunities in the area to view and learn art and craft. As a librarian and a curious creative, she has knowledge of a variety of craft techniques, and looks forward to learning more.
Tina Blondell was born in 1953 in Salzburg, Austria, to an American father and Austrian mother who encouraged her early interest in art. Crucial to her education as an artist were her firsthand encounters with art in Italy, where she lived until 1971, particularly the work of Caravaggio and of Artemisia Gentileschi. Other influences are Goya, Francis Bacon and Alice Neel; whose paintings combine an emotional impact with a vision of the human condition. Blondell’s involvement with earlier art informed both her technique and interest in narrative, and her quoting of images from the history of art in this painter’s decidedly contemporary work. In the mid 1990s Blondell settled in Minneapolis, where she continues to live. Blondell has exhibited her work widely both nationally and internationally. Her work is in many private and public collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Weisman Art Museum.

Bronze Sculpture Casting and the “Lost-Wax” Method By Thomas Zahn, Zahnworks Studio
As an aspiring figurative sculptor I was first introduced to the complexities of the bronze production process in the year 2000. I began attending
sculpture studio classes at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, a regionally recognized arts complex and foundry located west of Minneapolis near Lake Minnetonka. Somewhat unknowingly, I had stepped into the world of truly heavy metal. The art birthed from boiling hot wax; cauldron brews of plaster, water, and sand; glowing molten pours; welding torches; metal grinding, and the spraying of chemical mixes onto sizzling-hot bronze were all part of the foundry’s dark circus. And I was hooked. This spring will be the third time the Zahnworks Studio has participated in the Saint Paul Art Crawl. Because of the many factors that make bronze sculpture expensive I don’t expect to market sales through a walk-in audience. Generally, a completed 12-inch figure may start out at about $1,500, with larger pieces going into the $10-50,000 range. A human-sized figurative public art bronze statue, pedestal and prep work could easily cost over $100,000. In addition to the artistry, the cost of bronze and foundry fees are very high. During past Art Crawls the most common question studio visitors ask is: “How is bronze sculpture made?” Expecting a relatively straight-forward, simple answer, they soon learn, more often than not, that they are in for a longer explanation than they were bargaining for. This article will attempt to answer that question and like most good things in life, its complicated. First a bronze primer, then the “process.” Bronze has played such a pivotal a role in the human story that it has an “Age” named after it. Bronze was one of the first metals known to man. The earliest “lost-wax” cast bronze 30
artifacts found in the Middle East and Egypt date back to circa 3,700 BCE, making them more than 5700 years old. The ancients had discovered that tools could be shaped in wax and then encapsulated in hollowed fired clay molds. The molds would then be fired to burn out the wax (lost-wax) creating a shaped, negative space within. Molten bronze would then be poured into the core of the mold, allowed to cool and then the bronze object was removed from the mold. Through the centuries elements and steps of the “lostwax” process have been refined, however, bronze casting is essentially the same as it was in ancient times. Bronze, the most durable of art forms, is an alloy of 95% copper, 4% silicon and 1% manganese with traces of other elements such as iron. Bronze figures from Greek and Roman antiquity have been lifted up from the seabed unscathed by the salt-water or time. “Silicon bronze,“ developed in the 1920s, has been the bronze of choice for fine art castings since its inception. It is corrosionresistant, strong, resilient, formable and weldable. Also known as “hot-cast” bronze, a fine art “lost-wax” casting of silicon bronze is created through many labor-intensive steps. While the model may originally be made of clay, wax or other pliable material, for this analysis we will assume the figure is created in clay. From concept to finished artwork the production steps are: 1. The Original Model Artwork — If the clay figure needs internal support, a wire “armature” may be necessary to serve as the skeletal reinforcement. Through the creative process the artist works the clay into the detailed model as it will appear once it is cast in bronze. At this, the beginning step, the artwork is most malleable — to the point of even recording the sculptor’s fingerprints. The most extensive form-making and creative sculpting is completed in this first step in the process. Continues on page 83

The Joy of Being a District Spotlight Sponsor By Laurie Fitz
The District Spotlight Sponsorships have been a part of the Art Crawl since the Spring 2016 season and offer community sponsors to experience a deeper connection with the participants of the Saint Paul Art Crawl by curating artwork for the District Spotlight Gallery. Laurie Fitz and AM950 have been a District Spotlight Sponsor since the beginning. Below, Laurie Fitz describes why this experience has been so important as well as how the sponsor approaches jurying the images they receive. Why is being a District Spotlight Sponsor important to you? Understanding connections has always been both important and intriguing to me. My AM950 “Connections” radio show aims to spend time talking about our connection to ourselves, our community and our world around us. I believe ART can give us a special access to discovering and creating
connections that bring insights and feelings that inform, surprise, delight, disrupt and resonate at a level that taps into an unspoken “knowingness”. I love having good conversations about art on my radio show. And as a sponsor, I look forward to having conversations with participating artists of the Saint Paul Art Crawl. Each artist shares stories about their art, which I hope connects with the listeners in all kinds of ways. I love when the radio show conversations get listeners wanting to splash into the experience of the Art Crawl. Sometimes it just takes a nudge to get folks to put the Art Crawl on their calendar, and I am delighted to give that push. Art is to be experienced and when our “Connections” conversation gets folks motivated to visit the lofts and art spaces and celebrate the art of Saint Paul – then our conversation have opened a special door. Stepping
over the threshold to see art live and in person in our community allows the power of artist’s visions and gifts to make an impact. It welcomes visitors to all the magic. Being a District Sponsor is my way of joining in to help spark our imaginations. I also believe art has the power to change our world. Art transforms and now more than ever our world is in need of transformation. Being a District Spotlight Sponsor also fulfills a dream of mine to be a curator – to pick pieces that move me and speak to me about the way they connect to me, my sense of community and the world around me. There is an artistic viewpoint, an opinion – an artistic “voice” that being a sponsor allows me to claim and share. I look forward to the opportunity every year to review the art and make my picks. It is like opening a box of gifts and I always fall in love with each piece. I push myself to make the choices and enjoy the
chance to collaborate with Chad Larson -- the owner and President of AM950 – The Progressive Voice of Minnesota, to make our picks together. I am deeply appreciative of the time each of the artists who join me on “Connections”. It is my hope that the conversation we have on air inspires the folks who listen – to gain a vocabulary of questions and ideas to explore and that they will feel more confident to ask questions and get to know the artists throughout the Crawl. I want my listeners to feel a connection and buy the art for themselves and perhaps for their family in the years to come. I now own art pieces that my parents cherished and it is my hope the art I buy will be loved by the next generation. I am honored we start artistic conversations on Connections Radio Show and I deeply hope that we are part of igniting more conversations throughout the Art Crawl.
How do you approach the method of curating your pages? I spend time with each piece. I go through each file and let it sit for a time on my computer screen. As it sits . . . I just let each work speak to me. I spend about an hour just going through them all – and being with them. I have always found a connection to each piece I have been given to review, which I think speaks highly of the Saint Paul Art Crawl Artists. I then spend a few days seeing which pieces stay with me as I go about my work and time on my hobby farm. Invariably, certain pieces have stronger impact on me and I then make choices based on the “connection” The connection may be the way the piece brought out certain feelings, or I was struck by a technique or a story that the piece tells. For each piece I can name the connection . . . but narrowing the choices to 3 full pages and 4 quarter pages is part of the
collaboration. Chad and I share our favorites and then I look for our similar top picks. We often have picked the same top two and then it is a bit of a give and take on the rest. We respect each other’s artistic opinion and it becomes a cool way to see what we both are “connected” to and choose to represent the District. Is there anything else you would like to say about your experiences as a District Spotlight Sponsor? Each District Spotlight Sponsorship has had its own special rewards. During my first sponsorship opportunity I met an artist whose work grabbed me by the heart and I KNEW I wanted her to create my logo. I have had conversations with artists who I purchased their work over twenty years ago and love their art as much now as I did then. I have brought my nephews to experience the Saint Paul Art Crawl
and see the Crawl from their first visit eyes and love the freshness of their perspective – and supported them in making their first artistic purchase that “spoke” to them. And the greatest gift of being a sponsor is that I feel more connected to artists and our community. What a joy each new Art Crawl brings, seeing favorite artists as well as being introduced to the next generation of artists who bring new insights and perspectives. Art creates “connection” and I believe inspires our imagination to explore new ways of interpreting the world around us. And for me it gives hope. Hope to redefine and re-imagine. Art celebrates ways to be in community. Art allows us to see beyond what is . . . . . to something more. My hope for you who may be reading this -- is that you will find a special piece during your exploration that you will buy and treasure. 2. Mold Making — A mold is made over the original clay model. The mold, which captures the clay’s form and detail, is built in separable sections. It is formed by applying plaster directly onto the original clay surface. Once the plaster is set, it’s sections are opened and the original clay figure is removed leaving negative space in its place. The mold’s interior is then cleaned of residue clay and the empty plaster mold is closed and tied shut. By this stage, the original positive artwork has been destroyed and its likeness remains as negative space captured in the inner walls of the plaster mold. 3. Wax Casting — Molten wax is then poured into the mold and swished around until an even coating, usually about 1/8thinch thick, covers the inner surface of the mold. Once the wax has cooled typically two more coats are applied until the inner cavity of the mold is covered with an approximate 3/8th-inch layer of cooled, hard wax. 4. Wax Removal — The hollow wax copy of the original model is removed from the mold. With a plaster “waste” mold this often requires that the mold is broken apart or “wasted” to get access to the embedded hard wax original.
At this step the sculptor can continue to make modification to the design, but the changes are generally minor given that the hard wax is nowhere near as “workable” as the original clay model. 5. Spruing and Gating the Wax — (Now it gets complicated) Wax rods are attached (melted) to the wax figure like the branches of an inverted tree. These rods are called sprues or gates. The sprues will eventually provide feed paths for the flowing molten
bronze and the gates provide channels for the escape of air during the pouring process. 6. Investing the Wax — Once the original wax has been sprued and gated a container/enclosure is built around it. (At the art center we would wrap tarpaper sheets into a cylinder shape bound with cord to encapsulate the wax figure). The open cylinder is then sealed around the bottom. A soupy mixture of plaster, sand and water (“investment”) is then prepared and carefully poured over the wax artwork and rods until the entire figure is covered with only the top of the rods projecting from the investment. 7. Burnout of the Wax, Sprues and Gates — Once the cylindrical investment hardens the outer tarpaper sheet is removed and the investment, which at this point looks like a solid, white sewer pipe, is placed in a kiln. High temperatures (1500 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit) and pressure force the wax from the investment shell and the wax melts out, thus becoming “lost” creating a thin ¼” negative space and hollow channels in the investment. Once again the positive artwork has been destroyed and it’s reverse image remains as 3/8-inch channels of negative space buried in the belly of the investment. 8. Metal Casting — Once the investment is de-waxed, it is cooled and placed in a sand-filled pouring pit. The compacted sand around the investment keeps it from exploding during the molten bronze pour. Bronze ingots are placed in a crucible and heated to approximately 2000 degrees . The glowing crucible is then removed from the kiln and the molten bronze is poured into the hollow channels of the investment cylinder. The metal is then allowed to cool and solidify. 9. Break Out — Once the bronze and investment have cooled, hammers, power tools, and sand blasters may be used to break the bronze out of the investment. Once cleaned up, the sprues, which are also faithfully recreated in metal, are cut off leaving a rough bronze casting of the original artwork. 10. Metal Chasing — The sculpture is then polished to remove any sign of welding or casting defect. In some cases, the piece is then sand blasted to prepare it for the patina (coloring process). Here in the least flexible stage some “sculpting” is still possible, but this has to be done with industrial grinding and polishing tools. 11. Patination of the Bronze — Patination of the Bronze — The patina is the color of the finished bronze. It is created, like many of the bronze production steps, with the use of fire. With the use of a propane torch, bronze is heated to approximately 450-475 degrees. Chemicals are then applied by brush or sprayer creating a colored or textured appearance on the sculpture’s surface. Durable and rich hues that only improve with time, are literally burned into the bronze surface. The 4-minute video is a delight to the eyes and ears. Heidi was my instructor at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, and she remains one of Minnesota’s most talented figurative sculptors.
Bronze sculpture production is a long and somewhat dangerfilled process, but knowing that the finished bronze will withstand whatever the centuries have to challenge it, make the work seem insignificant. Only recently I discovered that I and the other sculptors at the art center were the beneficiaries of a teacher-student line that can be directly traced back to Auguste Rodin himself, the founder of modern sculpture. Rodin, followed the same regimen, and likely had similar uncertainty and anticipation as his art took shape, often out of sight, but always through intense heat and flame. Hopefully you will have an opportunity to stop by the studio in the Midway Triangle Building at 2500 University Avenue. The building, which is on the Green Line, offers a wide variety of studios and artistic interests.

Thomas Zahn, currently serves as the President of the Society of Minnesota Sculptors (SMS). He has been sculpting in bronze since 2000 and in 2002 a jury from the National Sculpture Society selected his second bronze of a diver, titled Free Fall, to appear in their Sports Sculpture Exhibition in Manhattan. In addition to winning regional awards and recognition through the annual SMS exhibitions, in 2014 he was one of 48 sculptors selected to exhibit at the National Sculpture Society’s 81st Annual Awards Exhibition at Brookgreen Gardens, Pawneys Island, South Carolina. He currently shows his work at the Leigh Gallery in Chicago. His studio E2 is located on the second floor in the southwest corner of the Midway Triangle Building at 2500 University Avenue, Saint Paul. His work can be seen at: Zahnworks.com
