One gets the sense, when reading the earliest accounts of the St. Paul Art Crawl from the 1990s, that there is some light confusion and maybe some bemusement at the whole concept. Lowertown does indeed have a “critical mass of artists,” writes one local columnist in 1993, on the eve of the second Art Crawl. She adds, as a sort of odd proviso: “But the activity is largely within the studio-homes.”
representation. In the spirit of the Lowertown area, it’s perhaps closer economically to the Art Crawl’s longtime weekend neighbor the Farmer’s Market than it is to a traditional gallery setup: in both cases, you’re buying directly from the source. Beyond that, consider the fairly radical act of an artist opening their studio to the public, and letting everyone see not just the finished results of the work, but also the place in which that work is created. The experience is less polished than seeing work on a white wall, or through a storefront window. There is an act of hospitality in allowing the public into your space, a perfect reversal of the old idea about the artist’s garret as a solitary, monastic retreat from the larger world. It pushes, surprises, confounds, and delights. The distinctions between a commercial space, a work space, a project space, a retail space, a living space, and an experimental space seem blurrier. With some of the spaces you walk into on the Art Crawl, you don’t know which it is. Possibly the artist doesn’t completely know, either. That uncertainty is, after all, the very essence of the kunstgestaltungwohnraum, or studio-home, or whatever you’d prefer to call it.
Note the befuddlement there. “Studio-homes”? There is no precise word for “studio-home” in English, so the journalist has created one by hyphenating two related words. “Studio-home.” Roll that one over on your tongue for a bit. It’s like one of those infamous German compound words: kunstgestaltungwohnraum. Maybe replacing the coinage “studio-home” with “kunstgestaltungwohnraum” in the assessment above can help us understand how novel the concept behind that word may have seemed in 1993. The St. Paul Art Crawl is such an institution more than twenty years after it was founded that it’s difficult to imagine how strange it might have seemed to early attendees. Certainly there’d been a standard operating procedure for seeing artwork in the Twin Cities (or anywhere else, really) for a long time. There were galleries, and the artists took their work to those galleries, and had shows, and maybe one night a week or month, all the galleries would be open and you’d see all the shows. And that was that. The Minneapolis of the 1980s was well known for its gallery crawls, until the money dried up. That was how artwork was seen and experienced.

Andy Sturdevant is an artist, writer and arts administrator. He has written about art, history and culture for a variety of Twin Cities-based publications and websites, including mnartists.org, Rain Taxi, and heavytable. com. Andy writes a weekly column on arts and visual culture in MinneapolisSt. Paul for MinnPost called “The Stroll.” His first book, Potluck Supper with Meeting to Follow, was published by Coffee House Press in 2013. The Star Tribune called it “inquisitive, witty and intelligent.” He’s also Artist Resources Director and runs the Resource Center at Springboard for the Arts in Lowertown St. Paul. See his work at www.andysturdevant.com.
But open studio crawls, where you’d see artwork in the spaces the artists made it, and where in fact many of them lived – this was something different. The experience of seeing artwork in this kind of environment is radically different than seeing it in a gallery. In purely logistical terms, there’s no overhead, no commission, no agent’s fees, no 6
The Godmother of Lowertown: A Tribute to Marla Gamble By Andrew Gaylord - Playwright and director for PlaceBase Productions.
After more than thirty years as an active member of SPAC, Marla Gamble will step down from the Board this year leaving an astounding record of engagement and service. Among her peers she is known as the “keeper of knowledge” in the Saint Paul Art Collective, the “wise” and “all-knowing” bedrock of SPAC activities.
at some time or other and as SPAC director for three non-consecutive terms. Marla is a designer of custom, one-of-a kind jewelry, which she creates herself using Lost Wax and Vacuum Casting methods. She created and ran for many years the jewelry center at Perpich Center for the Arts. Marla is also a painter in oil, watercolor and acrylic, and she has taught oil and watercolor technique in Saint Paul, Minneapolis, and Wayzata community education classes.
She got involved in everything, and she was a “strong voice in every decision.” Everywhere she went she brought with her a positive spirit and endless energy. When asked how she came to be known as “Mother Lowertown,” “Queen of Lowertown” and “The Godmother of Lowertown” Marla said, “If you stick around long enough they’ll start to call you whatever they want.” Speaking with her about nearly anything Lowertown-related one can see that she is also dreadfully modest.
Marla considers all of her work with SPAC as time well spent. As an artist living in Lowertown she has always seen a direct correlation between her own well-being and the health of the neighborhood. “It’s good business to be involved,” says Marla. She also ascribes her survival as an artist to her partner, Jim Thielen, who worked for twenty years as the Manager of the Northern Warehouse.
Marla Gamble joined The Saint Paul Art Collective in 1982 for the second meeting of its new housing committee. She quickly became a fundamental force behind the opening of the first artist-owned cooperative in Lowertown, The Lowertown Lofts, of which she is still Site Manager. Since then, Marla has served on nearly every SPAC committee
To one who invested nearly everything in this neighborhood before it had a bright future, the members of the Saint Paul Art Collective offer Marla Gamble their deepest gratitude.
