ON THE COVER: Cold Air Balloon, Matthew Rucker, Schmidt Artists Lofts Painting is a way for me to go to a place that existed only in my dreams when I was young. This place was quiet, clean and simple. Most importantly to me, in spite of my colorblindness, I could see everything in bright and vivid color. My paintings are snapshots of this place. The most prevalent theme in my paintings is the yin/yang relationship between humans and nature. Using a painting style I refer to as subtle surrealism, I playfully invent ways in which humans might attempt to dominate, mimic and connect with the natural world.

Writing the Future of the Arts in St Paul At last year’s Art Crawl, the Saint Paul Art Collective (SPAC) asked visitors for their opinions on what they would like to see in Lowertown through comment cards and an online survey which were part of a feasibility study financed by a Bush Foundation grant. Your participation helped the SPAC board made significant progress developing a plan for the continued growth of the arts in Lowertown.
The Saint Paul Art Collective (SPAC) and the St Paul Saints announced two new partnerships to celebrate the opening of CHS Field, the new Saints ballpark in Lowertown this spring.
up a large base of users that will build towards a larger center in time. As part of these next steps, SPAC will measure actions against many of the stated desires and needs gathered from the online survey, such as a need for more opportunities to exhibit work, to give or take classes or the articulated need from visitors for more venues and opportunities to view art or performances.
At a town hall style meeting in January at Bedlam Theatre, Artspace and members of the board of the St Paul Art Collective summarized the findings of the study and presented their suggested recommendations for the next steps to the community. The results supported our hypothesis that Lowertown should seek designation as a historic arts district and recommended that the SPAC board contemplate and evaluate a viable community art center for the near future, using a “hub and spokes” art center model that is more realistically achievable both financially and temporally than a larger traditional “bricks and mortar” art center would be. SPAC would develop a small, central presence, either physically or virtually or both, that would serve as the “hub” and this hub would coordinate a formal outreach to individuals, artists, organizations, and businesses that have an interest to participate as “spokes” as part of the “hub and spokes” model. We will enact specific communications and outreach campaigns to different stakeholder groups—such as visitors to Lowertown, or artists, or arts collectors—to inform them of the artistic/cultural resources opportunities available, publicize classes and events to attract usage of the hub and spokes model, and keep building
The board has set up a Feasibility Study Implementation Committee that will now take the recommendations from the feasibility study and create an action committee that will set about implementing different steps from the recommendations. The idea is to start with small, achievable, measurable steps that specifically focuses on creating access, connectivity, and greater collaboration amongst the assets that already exist in Lowertown and greater St Paul enabling everyone to create, collaborate, exhibit, teach, perform, or interact with the arts in a meaningful way. In time, SPAC will also continue to monitor the possibility of expanding into a larger physical art center space to encompass performance, exhibition, meeting, community, and other spaces.
The Saint Paul Art Collective and the St Paul Saints are again teaming up to bring an “art meets baseball” event to the 2015 Spring Art Crawl. Last year during the spring Art Crawl, the Saint Paul Art Collective partnered with the St Paul Saints to present the extremely successful “Art of Baseball” project. 108 baseballs were distributed to artists who were asked to decorate them anyway they wanted. The baseballs were returned and judged and displayed at the Union Depot during the Art Crawl. This time we wanted to see how creative artists could be in designing homeplate! 100 wooden, regulation size homeplates were distributed in early March. Artists had a month to create their own version of homeplate through paint, sculpture, photography or whatever their chosen medium. The homeplates were returned for judging and are displayed at the Saints new ballpark, CHS Field during the Spring Art Crawl.
In recognition of the importance of the arts in the Lowertown neighborhood in which it is located, the Saints CHS Field has been designed with a special art gallery in the concourse behind home plate dedicated to the late Andy Nelson, the Saints official artist for many years. And the Saints have contracted with SPAC to provide member artists with the opportunity to display and sell their work during each of the Saints 50 home games this season in Andy’s Gallery. Two artists will be selected for each game, for a total of 100 artists during the season. Artists will be provided with space in Andy’s Gallery to display their art from pregame activities through the 7th inning stretch. The names of the artists will be displayed on the Saints scoreboard during the game and it will be a great opportunity for baseball fans to sample local art during the games! Visit http://saintsbaseball.com/ for game schedules and ticket information.
If you would like to be part of writing the future of arts in St Paul by serving on the Feasibility Committee, offering opportunities as one of the spokes on our “hub and spokes” model or volunteering in another capacity, email us at info@stpaulartcollective.org. We need your help, support and input as we move forward.

Buying Art 101
Landmark Gallery Surveys show that for the majority of people, art is the most intimidating purchase to make, more so than buying real estate or a car. Award winning artist and seasoned art consultant Matthew Rucker will help you get past the myths and fears of buying art and guide you on the path to acquiring a stellar art collection you can enjoy for the rest of your life. The half-hour lecture will detail the complete process from walking into a gallery to framing your new art to help you buy art as an informed collector, without breaking your bank.

INSIDE OUT Lowertown
A public art project called INSIDE OUT Lowertown will be unveiled during the spring St Paul Art Crawl. The project is a celebration of the symbiotic relationship between artists and the spaces where they live, create and share their work. Over 175 portraits of Lowertown culture-makers, including artists, musicians, writers, dancers, poets, photographers, creative professionals, curators, art advocates and art patrons will be displayed on the sides of buildings throughout Lowertown.
100 artists were given a wooden template in the shape of a regulation size home plate and asked to create a work of art. Come see the results on display at CHS Field and bid on one to take home as part of our Art of Baseball Silent Auction.
The Lowertown neighborhood of downtown St. Paul is a storied arts district that boasts the highest concentration of designated artist live/work art studios in the United States. Decades of initiatives by artists, art advocates and civic leaders have made this possible. However, despite Lowertown’s history and reputation, there is a surprising lack of visual indication that hundreds of artists call Lowertown home. Though it’s only a temporary measure, the INSIDE OUT Lowertown exhibit aims to address this problem. The project bares witness to the fact that an arts district is something more that a place. It is a cultural incubator where a community of culture-makers live, work, instigate, communicate and create.

For more information about the project, the portrait subjects and self-guided tours visit http://insideoutlowertown.com/ INSIDE OUT Lowertown is part of a larger global project called Inside Out. INSIDE OUT action groups around the world are turning their portraits and their stories into public, street exhibitions. Nearly 200,000 people from more than 112 countries and territories have created group actions on varied themes such as hope, diversity, community building and climate change. Each group action is documented, archived and exhibited online here: www.insideoutproject.net. Throughout Crawl

The St. Paul Art Collective welcomes Jill Osiecki as the Art Crawl Director for the spring and fall 2015 Saint Paul Art Crawls. Jill has over fifteen years of experience coordinating large art related events and we are delighted to have her join us this year. As Jill explained during the interview process, “Even though my work experience is largely based out of the small arts town of Cody, Wyoming, I always took the time to be in Minnesota several times during each year. I am very familiar with the Saint Paul Art Crawl and feel that it is a great event. My move back to Minnesota last year after many years away was largely based on being closer to my family.”
Welcome Jill Osiecki, St Paul Art Crawl Director for 2015
While Special Events & Program Coordinator for the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Jill was responsible for the creation, coordination and budget of many events to attract visitors and fundraising support. As an Events Coordinator for the Cody County Chamber of Commerce, she created, implemented and managed all community events including a major top-rated annual western decorative arts sale and show, wildlife festival and fine art fundraising auction. Since May 2014, Jill has worked as a Program Coordinator for the Uptown Art Fair, assisting in the execution and planning of this large community event attracting over 400,000 visitors during the course of one weekend. Jill started her new position in December, 2014 and has been busy meeting and working with all the volunteers and artists that make the Saint Paul Art Crawls one of the premiere arts events in the Twin Cities. If you would like to join Jill and volunteer to help at a future Art Crawl, contact her at jillosiecki@artcrawl.org 40

Louise Woehrle
Serving as Executive Director at White Bear Center for the Arts, Suzi Hudson has been with the organization since 2004. Suzi has an extensive background in visual art, creative writing and business. Her professional experience began in graphic design and museum installation at the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Natural History Museum. After moving to Minnesota, she co-owned Lake Country Booksellers in the 1990’s, an independent book store in White Bear Lake. As an artist, she continues working in various mediums, and is currently pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at Hamline University.
A life time of media and marketing adventures, to communicate clearly, that is my path. Hand-drawn art festival posters, pen and ink theatre programs, retail signage, logo design, print production, more software than you can imagine… All to answer the life-long question: What in the honk are we trying to say and to whom and why does it matter?
Louise is an award-winning independent documentary filmmaker with several feature and short films to her credit. As a writer, director and producer she has taken audiences to parts of the world with limited access. The projects she touches, move her, and offer hope. They have won several awards including a Regional Emmy for short dramatic film Grandfather’s Birthday, several Best Documentary awards, and Telly Awards. Broadcast and special screenings include, PBS, Sundance Channel, World Bank in Washington D.C., The Walker Women with Vision, opening films at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival, classroom and public screenings at Universities and nonprofits worldwide. She writes, directs, and produces through her company Whirlygig Productions, Inc. Her current feature documentary in post-production is Stalag Luft III – One Man’s Story.
