Welcome to the Spring 2017 Saint Paul Art Crawl! On behalf of the St Paul Art Collective, I want to welcome you to the Spring 2017 Saint Paul Art Crawl. After celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Art Crawl in 2016, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Saint Paul Art Collective in 2017. With the number of participating artists now exceeding 400 and the number of visitors averaging around 38,000 for each semi-annual, threeday event, it is truly one of the premiere arts events in the Twin Cities. The Saint Paul Art Crawl has evolved from a fun weekend art event to a framework for creating and fostering important, interdependent relationships between the arts community and the residents and businesses of the city of St. Paul. St. Paul is a close-knit, vibrant and energetic art community that actively contributes to the greater Twin Cities cultural landscape. We want to thank all the participating artists, the sponsoring businesses and the hundreds of volunteers who work for months to stage this event for you. We hope you will continue to value locally produced art and that you appreciate the opportunity the Art Crawl gives you to meet face to face with the artists. A special thanks to the overall sponsor of this spring’s Art Crawl, the St. Paul Federal Credit Union. Enjoy the Saint Paul Art Crawl!

At Twelve Artist Statement - 2017 Like A Girl Exhibition It was small, they were small, and fragile. I wanted to protect them from time, age, the world outside of the garden, but they had already been taken out of the box. ('They' are the photos that inspire my paintings, and the girls in the photos and who they are pictured to be.) Still curious of how it all happened, that establishment of self, the declaration stating “I’m this! Not that” with fear and fierceness, painting them blurs the edges. Looking back, them at me, me at my own, sharing the pain and enthusiasm for a future we now know… forces me to scrape things away, lay on the floor and dilute with spirits, tilting the present in all the
4
directions our lives could have gone. We hang in the balance, taking the photo, holding who we are, hanging it on the wall so that we can step back and see. But it’s still smeared, it won’t come clean, we are not clean and pure anymore, that’s not how it works. I remember a dream of that red brick wall. Found a crack in it and I was still small enough to slide inside to a pink light garden with an electric organ. In their original photographic form, the photos I use may be everyday scenarios, but they change when painted into the memories of the viewer, constantly creating new performative definitions of girl-ness.

Self-Discovery Through Painting H.Leigh
Hi! My name is H.Leigh and I hope this story helps someone, somewhere, sometime. I fell into acrylic painting while climbing out of a barrel of wine and a keg of beer. When I quit drinking, I substituted the habit with the emersion of school and taking a painting class at Metro State which to my surprise, I found friendship, support and a love of painting. At the time, it was just a class but grew into the foundation of my B.A. in Creative Healing in Human Development. Painting is a painful process for me. Some of my best work has come from relationship problems that were experienced during the time of each piece of work. Some of my work has been about processing grief, letting go of relationships that no longer serve me, anxiety over politics, feeling out of control, surrendering and then accepting. My first series that started as an experiment in light and shadow became my “Recovery Horses”. Throughout my life horses have been integral to my core identity. I grew up with no siblings in a single parent household and spent most of my time around horses. Through my recovery journey, I have used horses to communicate emotion, struggle, growth, life lessons, and whatever else needs deep process work. The horses come to life and become their own beings in the process. I am often surprised by the end result as they turn out much differently than I originally design them to be. This is how painting is for me. It’s about going with the flow, allowing rather than controlling, supporting rather than destroying. Not only do I speak through my work, but the work speaks through my hands. I believe that the creative process surpasses the validation that it receives in school, society, and in basic healing of the human condition. Research says the creative process helps create neuropathways and speeds up the pruning process of old circuits in our brains. It has personally given me a wider visionary scope and has in some ways broken open parts of my heart that were closed and in some ways helped me create healthier boundaries because while in the actual process of painting, my soul works out the human dramas and dilemmas by seeing all views and finding forgiveness and acceptance for my relationship failures. Painting has also led me to see my value in life and in the people’s
38
lives around me whereas I have struggled with feelings of being a burden to others throughout my life time. In essence, painting has helped heal the most foreign parts of myself and the work has affected the lives of others as well. For me, being a painter isn’t just about painting, but it’s about healing and then helping others heal also. It’s about offering another perspective to the human and animal condition. Hopefully healing spreads through the work and the intention. It is way more than talent or time or patience; it’s about understanding through standing in our empowerment and then reaching out to others to help follow suit. I hope that each individual finds their way of healing in the way that is unique for them. Thank you! H.Leigh

Lowertown First Fridays has a mission: To give the community a chance to get to know Lowertown artists in a relaxed, casual environment between art crawls, and to give artists a way to show their work for free, without even having to spruce up their studios. LFF started in 2009 and, remarkably, five sturdy volunteers still keep it running: Tara Weatherly, Stephen Workman, Winna Bernard, Rachel Wacker, and Barbara Evan. LFF hours are from 6 to 9 pm on First Friday of every month. The most active LFF artist building is the Northern Warehouse, along with several galleries: AZ Gallery, The Show Gallery, Lowertown Underground Artists, and 333 On the Park (opening soon). Lowertown restaurants are on board, as well! Twelve restaurants—all that have been asked so far!--have contributed a match toward a gift card! To qualify for the monthly award, the artist has only to participate that month and help get the word out via social media. By no means least, our guests love LFF! People come from all over the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota, and even other countries. They tell us their visit was pleasant, stimulating, and rewarding. We invite you to come and investigate for yourself. You will be warmly welcomed! http://www.lowertownfirstfridays.org/ Facebook: Lowertown First Fridays Instagram: #lowertownfirstfridays Lowertown First Fridays is a Program of the St Paul Art Collective.

An artists’ cooperative gallery in the heart of Lowertown since 1997
The expansion of the Art Crawl into the East Side has made it possible for the East Side Freedom Library to become a venue. This year our historic Carnegie Library building celebrates its centennial, while we – the East Side Freedom Library, a new non-profit – mark our third birthday. Since June 2014 we have collected resources and curated programs in order to inspire solidarity, advocate for justice, and work towards equity for all. ESFL sits in the midst of Saint Paul’s most diverse neighborhood. Dakota and Ojibway people, descendants of Swedish, Irish, Italian, German, Polish, and Serbian immigrants, and newcomers from southeast Asia, central America, east Africa, and the urban Midwest have made their homes here, maintained their cultures here, and developed new organizations and identities here. Art – music, theater, story-telling, poetry, visual art, pottery, dance, fiction, weaving, and more – provides means for our neighbors to share their stories, develop understandings of each other, and build solidarity with each other. ESFL provides a welcoming space in which these activities can take place, be nurtured, and grow.

Klosterarbeiten, or Monestary Artwork, originated during the Middle Ages in Bavaria, South Tyrol, and Austrian regions but reached the height of its popularity during the Baroque Period in women’s convents. These works of art, created with gold and silver filaments, gold papers, pearls, and velvet, were used to provide ornamentation and embellishment to religious objects such as Madonna figures and relics. The tedious process requires patience as the artist must create intricate identical pieces for a single work. Due to an altered relationship between religion and the culture in the Alps, this technique is not commonly practiced by younger generations in current times. Feeling the importance to keep the technique alive, I learned the process from my Aunt. In my most recent works I have transformed the technique from representing original ideas of religion and devotion to what popular culture is devoted to today: politics, sports, movies. In doing so I try to delve in to what European and American societies believe in today and why. MarieBaum Exhibiting at Union Depot

AC: For the upcoming Art Crawl you will be releasing your new “I Am” series which incorporates things like music and visual aids? Can you tell us a little about that series and what you think including those elements will add to the experience? Kristi Abbott: The I AM Series tells not just my story, but our collective story through the use of familiar imagery richly layered throughout each artwork. Each of the 8 pieces explores a theme that has been pivotal in my journey as an artist over the last 4 years.

As an experiential learner I understand how important touch and interaction are for me to engage with and understand an idea or concept. Art is no different, especially when it has a story to tell. I had already created story maps for my pieces, but when my partner, who is an interactive designer and UX developer, suggested taking it to a whole new level by making the maps interactive and have them link to resource material, I was like, “Hell yes! When can we get started?” Once we had that train rolling, it felt right to bring in other elements that would equally stimulate other senses. I believe that by adding food and music to support the art, people’s engagement and understanding will increase tenfold as they are able to experience the artwork on a much deeper level and through multiple stimulation points. To view Kristi’s “I Am Series” please go to Loft #406 of the Lowertown Lofts Artists Cooperative.

Beth Bergman Not many people have made such an impact on the artists’ community as Beth Bergman. Beginning with her involvement with WARM as a founding member, Beth has supported the arts/artists actively. Her participation in local events included donations for silent auctions, attending openings, being a guest juror at community exhibits and specialized art instructions for groups. Beth has sat on the Board of Directors for the International Art Materials Association and the Minnesota Museum of American Art. In 2013 she received the prestigious Hall of Fame Award from the National Art Materials Trade Association. The list is long of the organizations Beth has actively supported. Through partnerships in programing and networking she has been involved with the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, the Bloomington Art Center, Highpoint Printmaking Center, Minnesota Museum of
American Art, St. Paul Community Education, and the Women’s Art Institute. We, the Saint Paul Art Crawl, have also benefitted from her support as the owner of Wet Paint Artist Materials and Framing. Wet Paint has been an Art Crawl sponsor for several seasons. For over thirty years Beth has provided a resource for our St. Paul art community with supplies for all sorts of creative endeavors. Beth has announced her retirement from Wet Paint, leaving it in the competent hands of long term employees. She is now ready to focus on making art herself. So many of us have benefited from her guidance and encouragement. Thank you, Beth for everything you have done. Best wishes on your retirement!
SAINT PAUL ART CRAWL FALL 2017 OCTOBER 13, 14, 15 For more information, please visit saintpaulartcrawl.org The St. Paul Art Collective is proud to announce the Spring 2017 Saint Paul Art Crawl season. This event is produced each season by the Collective, which relies on its members, artists and others who volunteer their time and resources, to make it happen. The Art Crawl is supported by the voters of Minnesota through grants, sponsorships, and other funding. Contributors include the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment, a STAR grant from the City of Saint Paul,
the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. The official sponsor for the Spring 2017 Saint Paul Art Crawl is the St. Paul Federal Credit Union. Additional support has been given by generous local businesses including Dark Horse Bar & Eatery, the Pioneer Press, KTNF AM 950, Metro Transit, Artspace, Modern Press, St. Paul Saints, Dayton’s Bluff Neighborhood Housing Services, Springboard for the Arts, Wet Paint, Pioneer Endicott/Northwestern Building, and others.
St. Paul Saints and CHS Field: Thank You For Your Support hrough a commitment to the arts, the St. Paul Saints and CHS Field have created a beautiful relationship between baseball, artists, and the community. Art has been an important component at CHS Field from the time of its design when the public art piece, Meander, was added to the Broadway Entrance. Inside the Ballpark, fans can view murals previously on display at the Midway Stadium by Andy Nelson in the Andy Nelson Artist Gallery. In addition to these permanent installations, each St. Paul Saints home game features a variety of opportunities for the fans to view and purchase artwork or to take part in a special project. Through a partnership between the St. Paul Art Collective and CHS Field, artists have the chance to exhibit their artwork inside the Andy Nelson Art Gallery during each home game as well as to take part in a special exhibition during the Art Crawl each Spring. Partnerships such as this strengthen the important relationship between art and community and it is an honor to work with the St. Paul Saints and CHS Field each season. This Art Crawl Season at CHS Field One highlight of the Spring Art Crawl is this year’s community art project is called “Nine Lives.” Like the proverbial cat with 9 lives, 100 artists were asked to 100
create a piece of art where recycled, repurposed or found objects are prominently featured. The exhibit is in keeping with CHS Field’s designation as one of the greenest ballparks in America. The pieces will be displayed in the second floor Securian Room at the Saints ballpark, CHS Field, during all the hours of the Spring Art Crawl April 2830 and will be sold at a silent auction with the proceeds split between SPAC and the artist. CHS Field Plaza will also be home to a tent featuring Flamenco dance performances coordinated by Deborah Elias and made possible by a Forecast Public Art grant.
