WELCOME Saturday saw us finally record our first win of 2018 Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division match. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players’ officials and supporters of Chesham United and we hope you all enjoy your brief stay here with us this afternoon before safely travelling home this evening. Also, please give a big welcome to our guests this afternoon, the players and parents of Huntingdon Town Rowdies Under 11’s who are spending the afternoon with us and hopefully enjoying the matchday experience so make sure you give them all an extra loud cheer as they lead the teams onto the pitch today. Saturday saw us finally record our first win of 2018 but boy, did the lads make us wait to finally secure that elusive three points. The match report is elsewhere in this edition so without spoiling the record of events, I’ll just say well done boys, good job done and we move on to today’s game. Also, Saturday saw the
debut of giant goalkeeper Jake Jessup. As things unfolded over the weekend, Jake has been signed as our new Number One after it was agreed between player and manager that Mike Emery could leave and seek football at another club perhaps nearer to his home in Lincolnshire after his recent combination of personal issues and problems with travelling so I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Mikey for his efforts whilst with us here at the Saints and also a big welcome to Jake, who will be making his home debut here this afternoon. Off the pitch, don’t forget that during this cold weather, why not wrap up warm with one of our new scarves – priced at £12.50 and we have just taken delivery of number of beanie hats too with the Club badge embroidered into them – priced at £10. Both are available to buy
either behind the bar or in the merchandise kiosk at today’s game. We also have a QUIZ NIGHT coming up on Saturday 24th March (Bishops Stortford at home that day) so if you fancy getting a team together (max 8 members) do get in touch. Entry costs £25. We currently have 15 teams entered so do come along, the more the merrier. Right then, back to today’s game. Chesham have been on a decent run recently and sit on the cusp of the play-off positions, so we expect a really tough game today. Please play your part as our 12th Man as you have done so superbly all season. You really do help drive the boys on and really appreciate your support.

MANAGER’S NOTES Welcome to you all today and I thank you for your continued support Firstly I want to apologise for our last home performance against Frome, so unlike us but It’s done and since then the players have responded well with a positive second half at Royston and a great win away to Dunstable. We face a tough month starting today with a Chesham team on fire. But that’s what we want and relish, the chance to be able to compete with the top sides and see how far we have come and can go this season. So I’m looking forward to a great
battle today. We also welcome our mascots today, Huntingdon Town Rowdies Under 11’s and I hope they have a great afternoon and enjoy the experience with us here today. As you probably know, Lee has stepped down as chairman of the Club and I want to personally say thank you as his tireless and class efforts to keep and increase the stature of this club is one of the main reasons I am here and he should be applauded for all he has done
and continues to do here. So, enjoy the game, remember we need your continued backing as we remain on course to finish as high as we can as well as compete in the latter stages of the Hunts Senior Cup. Lots of games and lots to play for as we enter this final third of the season. COYS Matt Clements

CHESHAM UNITED FC Joined League: 1917 Chairman: Brian McCarthy Website: www.cheshamunited.co.uk Nickname: The Generals A special welcome for our next home Southern League Premier Division fixture of the season with CHESHAM UNITED our visitors this afternoon. Chesham along with our Club, are two of only six sides who are competing in the Premier Division of the Southern League for the sixth successive season – the others being Weymouth, Frome, Hitchin and Redditch. With the geographical reorganisation of Steps Three and Four of the Football Pyramid and the introduction of a Central Football League Premier division predictions are that this will be the final league meeting, of our two Clubs with our lads transferred to the new division and Chesham remaining in the Southern League Premier Division. However, I must stress that this is still speculation and it is likely to be after the end of the current season when new formats are published. Chesham United currently have the best record of all 24 teams in the division with six consecutive league victories including a 4-0 comprehensive midweek victory over St Ives. Chesham had a stuttering start to the season and in mid-October they were 17th in the table but a steady improvement in results has seen they rise to fifth and a place in the play-offs after that midweek victory – nine points ahead of the Saints. Their record against St Neots is very impressive – particularly at home where St Neots have never won. Two draws including the most recent in October last year have been the best results for St Neots in six visits, whilst at home Matt Clements’ side have won twice and lost three times. They did however win impressively last time Chesham visited the Premier Plus Stadium with Jevani Brown recording one of his two St Neots hat tricks, and James Tricks claiming their fourth goal in a 4-1 victory.
CLUB HISTORY The story of Chesham United has many highs and many lows. It was formed in 1917 following the merger of Chesham Town FC (who were founder members of the Southern League in 1894 when still known as just Chesham FC) and
Chesham Generals (who took their name from the General Baptist Church in Chesham Broadway). Relative success in the following years paled into insignificance following the FA Amateur Cup run of 1967/68 when, against all the odds, little Chesham United went all the way from the Preliminary Round to the final of the FA Amateur Cup, finally losing 1-0 to Leytonstone in front of a 54,000 Wembley crowd. At a time when the population of Chesham was just 18,000 people, the club sold 22,000 tickets for this game. In January 1991, promotion and the Isthmian League Division One title were secured. In its inaugural season, the Loctite Final was reached but the match was lost to Bishops Stortford on penalties. In October 1992, the Club went to the very top of the Isthmian league after a famous win at Enfield, where they remained until the end of the season, being crowned Champions on the last day of the season following a 4-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet. Witnessed by an average home gate of just short of 1,000, the season also saw the arrival of ex-Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson. Promotion to the National Conference depended on ground improvements that could not be afforded. So, the season ended in disappointment after so much hard work. In the early 2000s the club again had an eye on promotion to the Conference as Bob Dowie led a strong Chesham side to 6th in the Ryman Premier, possibly an under achievement when considering the resources at his disposable. The team that year included Wayne Andrews and Fitz Hall, both players having progressed to enjoy professional careers in the higher echelons of football. Two years later and the club were once again relegated back to Division One. United’s first year in the Southern League was certainly adventurous. At times they looked title contenders, and then they flirted with relegation and in the end were happy to finish in midtable. The following summer the true price of years of over-achieving came to light. Nearly two decades of wealthy
Chairmen helping to fund the club was over and it was time for The Generals to stand on their own feet, a task that proved too much. The 2010/2011 season marked the start of a new era for Chesham United. For some time the club’s Supporters’ Trust has been the largest shareholder and in June 2010 the other two majority shareholders, including the club Chairman, relinquished control of the club and handed over their voting rights to the fans’ representatives ahead of the Trust securing sufficient funds to purchase shares for outright ownership. So, we went into the new season as a truly supporters’ run football club looking forward to the challenge of re-establishing ourselves at Southern League Premier Division level after a four years’ absence. In 2011/12 Chesham finished fourth in the Premier Division to earn a place in the play-offs but lost by the odd goal in five to third placed Totton in the semi-final.

In the face of adversity, the football community always shines. Hartlepool United’s desperate financial situation has once again brought the best out of supporters across the country. Pools suffered relegation from the Football League after 96 years last season and their struggles have continued on and off the pitch in the National League. Hartlepool were purchased in June by John Blackledge from previous owners Gary Coxall and recruitment firm JPNG. Since acquiring the club, Blackledge is believed to have invested £1.8m of his own money but just six months into his reign the club was put up for sale. Earlier this month it was then revealed that the club needed to raise £200,000 to pay staff, players and various other bills by January 25 to stave off the possibility of facing administration. Meanwhile, on the pitch, Craig Harrison’s side hover seven points above the relegation zone, at the time of writing. But the football community has rallied in recent weeks and after Hartlepool fan Rachel Cartwright set up an online crowdfunding campaign, donations from all over the country have raised over £70,000. Hartlepool’s North East neighbours Middlesbrough also took action by raising funds for the cashstrapped club, who had supported Borough in 1986 when their existence was under threat. Ebbsfleet United, their National League counterparts, did the same. Sky Sports anchorman and diehard Pools fan Jeff Stelling has pledged his full backing to support the club too. Last Saturday saw Hartlepool’s fixture at home to Wrexham dubbed #SavePoolsDay and a sell-out crowd of almost 7000 turned out, including coach loads of Middlesbrough fans. The money raised will cover the wages of players and staff for this month but the club still needs a long-term solution, and fast. It had been reported that Blackledge was to sit down with local businessman Chris Musgrave with a view to completing a potential takeover. The Hartlepool-born entrepreneur was the seventh party to have signed a non-disclosure agreement and provide proof of funds to the tune of £3m. Musgrave was the only one to have signed a NDA and then followed up intentions to thrash out a deal which could be completed by the end of the month. However, after seeing the club’s finances, he has pulled out and said: “No one has ever made money out of this club. That was never my intention and I was prepared to provide finance to the value of over £1.5m, but I am not prepared to sign blank cheques, with no end in sight.” Let’s hope this proud football club can find a way out of this distressing situation.

ST NEOTS

BLACKSTONES
St Neots moved back up to second spot in the Premier Division courtesy of this valuable victory over Blackstones. After a disappointing first half St Neots produced a much more convincing display after the break and deserved their victory over a side that have lots of matches in hand but never looked convincing. There was a debut goal for St Neots most recent signing Andy Findlay and a welcome return as substitute by Barrington Belgrave who has been out with injury since Boxing Day. However, the injury jinx struck again with defender Mark Burrows sidelined after just 13 minutes and he will need intensive treatment prior to a return to fitness. Danny Marlow and Jon Hoggett were back to their best in midfield and Jon Chatfield made some important saves to earn the man of the match tag. There was nearly a very dramatic start when in the first minute new boy Andy Findlay challenged the visiting goalkeeper who dropped the ball, but Findlay’s shot rebounded off the keeper for a corner. The two sides had drawn at Stamford three weeks earlier and they seemed to show each other some respect in the opening
1
stages with neither creating a great deal. Blackstones’ first chance came after 11 minutes when Liam Harrald played Phil Stebbing clear but Chatfield produced a great block to stifle his chance. The loss of Burrows so early in the match seemed to unsettle St Neots and Kevin Ainslie shot wide with the reshaped defence looking square. Dan Cotton had a shot deflected but four minutes before the break St Neots were ahead thanks to some skill and quick thinking by the new boy. A lengthy clearance from Chatfield had the Stones defence back peddling and when Robbie Blowers misjudged the bounce of the ball the keeper was caught out of position and Andy Findlay’s neatly judged lob nestled in the net to give St Neots an unexpected half time lead. St Neots best first half move came right on the whistle as Jon Hoggett and David Fisk combined to set up Danny Marlow who shot disappointingly wide. Both sides emerged for the second half showing a greater sense of urgency in their play. Chatfield produced another fine reflex save when Stebbing’s pace took him clear on the right and after 57 minutes from a series of corners Blackstones got themselves back into the
match. Dan Cotton sent over an inswinging corner that was allowed to bounce in the six yards box and Richard Jones stabbed the ball home. That was the wake-up call St Neots needed and with Belgrave and Mark Franklin on for Findlay and Fisk they adopted a more attacking stance and were rewarded eight minutes from time. A short Franklin free kick invited Marlow to cross and the ball was headed down by Hoggett for the lively Kevin Byrne to claim his fifth goal in eight games. This set up a lively last ten minutes with a great deal of added time played during which Mark Franklin and Bas Belgrave both went close to extending the lead before Mark Barry crowned a good all-round performance by clearing off the line to preserve maximum points for his side.
Saints: Chatfield, Russell, Barry, Burrows, Dogbe, Francis, Fisk, Hoggett, Marlow, Byrne, Findlay. Subs: McElroy (for Burrows 13 mins), Belgrave (for Findlay 65 mins), Franklin (for Fisk 80 mins), Maitland & Finch. Man of the Match: Jon Chatfield John Walker

1ST TEAM REPORT DUNSTABLE TOWN Southern League Premier Division A last gasp winner from St Neots deservedly gave them their first victory of 2018 after three defeats and two draws in their last five league outings. The victory was hard earned for a visiting team that started and finished the game well but for a twenty minutes spell either side of the break they struggled to compete with a side just four points off the foot of the table. Dunstable, reshaped and much improved of late, have recently undergone a root and branch reorganisation both on and off the pitch and prior to midweek they had won just twice in 29 matches prior to a surprise Tuesday evening victory over top five side Weymouth, so they came into this match with expectation of continuing their revival. They are a hard-working side employing a direct approach in attack and midway through the game they surprised St Neots with their ambitious but effective approach. Having come from behind to lead 2-1 they must have been hoping for another rare home victory, but they seemed to run out of steam in the last ten minutes whereas their visitors, now noted for their ability to play right up to the final whistle, broke their hearts with that late winner. With skipper Luke Knight back from suspension, he was reinstated in midfield in place of Tom Wood and Dylan Williams was preferred to Scott Sinclair in attack. The third change saw newly signed goalkeeper Jake Jessup make his debut in place of Mike Emery whose work commitments were behind his
2

sudden departure, having played all but two of his sides’ 34 league and cup matches this season. The pitch was heavy and sanded in places, but a prematch inspection saw it passed fit. A sixth minute long throw by Johnny Herd was headed on to David Bridges whose shot flew well wide but eight minutes later St Neots were ahead as Dylan Williams went around the outside of Gideon Okito but was pulled back and a penalty awarded which Williams confidently tucked away. The Dunstable player was booked, and a pattern of play emerged with St Neots using the Herd long throws as a principle attacking ploy. Another of his long efforts was headed on by Taylor Parr for Williams to half volley over the bar and apart from a length effort by Peter Kioso from a Gideon Okito cross, little was seen of the Dunstable attack. St Neots were looking comfortably in control with both Lewis Irwin and Williams having shots blocked and Luke Knight shooting well over the bar. Ironically the closest that St Neots came to concede a first half goal was after 41 minutes when Parr elected to head a bouncing ball back to his keeper who had to stretch well above his 6’ 5” frame to grab the ball. However, in added time before the break, the new signing showed his athleticism to turn a well placed free kick by Arel Amu over the bar for a corner. Having finished the first half well, the host side carried on after the restart and just three minutes into the second period they deservedly drew level when
3
Amu played Ryan Young clear on the right and he evaded a tackle to surprise the keeper with a fierce low shot. After 63 minutes Dunstable won a corner and Ryan Young’s teasing cross was not cleared, the ball dropping to Daniel Trif who hit a shot past the unsighted Jessup to give his side the lead. This was a wake-up call for St Neots and three minutes later Herd’s throw was headed on by Taylor Parr and when the ball was not cleared he pounced to level the scores. St Neots sent on all three substitutes for the last twenty minutes and that paid dividends when four minutes into added time a Herd cross from the left found Lewis Irwin on the far side of the penalty area and his low shot was helped over the line from close range by substitute Kyron Wiltshire. So, St Neots stay twelfth in the table as the season enters its final third. 1ST TEAM REPORT Royston Town
2
Southern League Premier Division A much improved second half performance after an unimpressive first 45 minutes saw St Neots claw back some pride after their mauling by Frome in their previous outing. However, the concession of two goals in the first sixteen minutes of the match was enough to earn hosts Royston their first Southern League victory over their visitors. For the first half hour St Neots was tentative, lacking in confidence and purpose and a carry over from their poor weekend performance seemed to be dogging them. No doubt the half time team talk highlighted their shortcomings and they looked a different team in the second 45 minutes. Royston sit proudly just one point out of the play-off places in their first season at Step Three with matches in hand and this excellent start to their highest ever league placing is no accident. Defensively they are solid and determined and they attack as a unit and despite their poor start the St Neots rearguard did well to limit them to just two first half goals. St Neots renaissance after the break saw them enjoy the greater share of second half possession but they lacked finishing and are still searching to rekindle their self-belief. With Harry O’Malley unavailable Manager Matt Clements made four team changes leaving Dylan Williams, Kyron Wiltshire and Ronayne Marsh-Brown on the bench and bringing back Johnny Herd in defence, Tom Wood and David
St Neots Town Bridges in midfield and Lewis Irwin up front. After David Bridges had set up Dion Sembie-Ferris for a shot punched clear by home keeper Josh Tibbets after five minutes it was all Royston and three minutes later there was the all too familiar sight of St Neots leaking an early goal. A long clearance by Sam Gaughran was headed down by an off-balance defender and it fell to ace marksman John Frendo who powered home a left foot volley giving Mike Emery no chance. After sixteen minutes the score was doubled as St Neots conceded a free kick wide on the right and full back Lee Chappell sent a dipping free kick towards goal, seemingly totally misjudged by Emery as it went over his head and inside the far post. Three minutes later it could have been even worse when Adam Marriott was played clear by Scott Bridges, but he delayed his shot and the ball went wide. A fierce volley by Ed Asafu-Adjaye tested Emery and Sam Corcoran volleyed wide as half time approached and the only notable attacks in the first 45 minutes by the visitors stemmed from long throws into the penalty area by Johnny Herd that were cut out by a combination of defenders and goalkeeper. The second half saw a different pattern to the game. Straight after the restart Tibbets twice saved well from Bridges and Sembie-Ferris and just before the hour St Neots sent on the lively Stefan Broccoli to replace Scott Sinclair. Now St Neots were enjoying a much greater share of possession but despite
1 some good approaches down the flanks by Sembie-Ferris and Broccoli they lacked the final ball and a cutting edge in front of goal. Long before the end Royston had clearly settled to sit on their two goals advantage and soak up St Neots’ attacking and the visitors gained a glimmer of hope after 74 minutes when they pulled a goal back. Wood and Sembie-Ferris worked the ball down the right flank and under pressure defender Asafu-Adjaye mistimed an attempted back pass towards his keeper and Lewis Irwin pounced to steal the ball and round the advancing keeper to score. In the last ten minutes most of the play was towards the Royston goal but St Neots could not create a second goal but left in defeat with some pride restored.
