Greenie’s Greetings With Director Mike Green

"Hello everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today‘s GCE Hire Plant United Counties League Premier Division South match. Today we extend a warm welcome to everyone connected to Hinckley AFC and we hope you enjoy our hospitality here this afternoon on what will be your first ever visit”.

The fight for pole position is now really heating up with ourselves, at the time of writing, tucked in nicely behind leaders Aylestone Park, just one point behind and still having a game in hand over the early pace setters. We of course continued to lay the foundations in a bid to cement our place in the Top Five by comfortably beating bottom of the table Godmanchester Rovers here at the Premier Plus Stadium by eight goals to two last Saturday in what was an entertaining game with Thorpey scoring three times and other goals from Barnesy, Con, Sammy, Baulky and young Marley. We lost both Nath and Bonesy to injury during the first half so have my fingers crossed that they could both be back in contention today along with Murph and Mike who were both unavailable.

Another decent attendance for the above game, 286, which was better than quite alot of the games played at Step Four. We have played seven home league games prior to today and have been watched by an average of 253 people during those games (1,775 total) and oour overall home average so far including all league and cup matches is 257 over eleven games, (2,829 total). Fantastic support so far and please do keep spreading the word and lets get that average up to the 300 mark.

From The Dugout

"’A huge welcome to Everyone associated to Hinckley AFC to the Premier Plus Stadium. A side who have adapted to this league very well with some impressive performances and will no doubt believe they are in the promotion push this season”.

An impressive win away at Lutterworth last time out shows what a good side they are and what they are capable off.

As for us, back to back home games is always nice, especially to play in front of such a vocal, supportive crowd. I think everyone will agree, last time out against Godmanchester was well worth the admission fee, seeing 10 goals, 8 being from us. In fairness, I thought we were very ruthless and professional, especially after losing both centre backs in the first half. Some outstanding goals and some outstanding passages of play made it an enjoyable afternoon.

We still have two cup competitions to look forward to as we face Eaton Socon in the semi final of the hunts Senior Cup and also await the winners of Potton/ Letchworth Garden City in the Hinchingbrooke Cup (was to be played Wednesday night) so two big local games which I am sure will bring big crowds.

Let’s hope for another entertaining game between two good sides and a positive result. Your noise is amazing and I look forward to hearing you for 90 minutes. #inittogether

Boardroom Gossip

“Good afternoon and welcome all. Today we welcome the players, officals and supporters of Hinckley AFC to the Premier Plus Stadium for this UCL Premier Division South league fixture. Hinckley have had a very good season so far and sit mid table and will be a strong test for the Saints this afternoon.”.

It’s been a hectic and full on October for the Saints both league and Cup fixtures and lots of away matches has proved a real test of character, fitness and determination to maintain an excellent run of fine performances helping the Saints push onwards and upwards and establish themselves in the leading pack. However, this has come at a price, picking up several injuries, which hopefully Cameron and his medical team can help get them back to fitness with no further midweek fixtures for the time being planned.

Off the field the club had introduced new pool table and will be looking to add Darts to the club facilities to offer both match day and mid weekly matches at the club for those budding Grand slam wannabe players, more information will be confirmed in the near future on these new facilities for all the local community to come and enjoy.

Finally I want to say a huge Thank you for all our incredible supporters who travel the highways and byways to Help Cameron and the Team through this busy season and give them that Extra lift to help them achieve their Goals.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

FA TROPHY – SECOND ROUND QUALIFYING 10 November 2018)

St Neots Town 0 Barwell 1

This match was supposed to be about a football contest, but it turned out to be more about an over-zealous Referee. The forgettable first half was dominated by the Referee who issued four yellow cards for offences not helped by the conditions thanks to a pre-match downpour, including two to visiting striker Massiah McDonald leaving his side to play for more than an hour with ten men. Boston Referee Alastair Wilson also dismissed one of the Barwell Managerial staff from the dugout and in the second half issued a second yellow card to Dylan Williams ten minutes from time balancing up the two sides. In addition to the two dismissals there were a further four yellow cards issued – three for the visitors – in a match that hardly boasted a single malicious challenge. One time million-pound Wolverhampton Wanders striker, 32 years old Sylvan Ebanks-Blake came off the Barwell bench at half time to fire his side to an unlikely FA Trophy victory claiming the only goal in a scrappy match between these two Southern League Central opponents. St Neots can have no real complaints because they had more than enough possession to make their numerical superiority count, but at present they are lacking quality in front of goal. In eleven matches at the Premier Plus Stadium, they have managed only thirteen goals whilst on foreign soil they have notched just a goal a game in league and cup. Manager Matt Clements had to make two team changes bringing in utility man Matt Miles for the suspended Johnny Herd and with loanee Ben Worman unavailable he gave Claudio Ofosu a starting berth for only the second time in the last seven matches. It was a bright enough start with both keepers in action in the first five minutes –Harry Reynolds saving well from Liam Canavan and Dion Sembie-Ferris seeing his effort pushed clear by Liam Castle. A free kick by Dylan Williams following the first McDonald booking saw Tom Wood just inches from converting the low cross and then a second Sembie-Ferris effort was deflected for a corner. Brady Hickey squandered the visitors best first half chance firing over the bar with the St Neots defence split, but further bookings saw the rhythm of the match deteriorate. Castle did have to leave his line swiftly to save at the feet of Nabil Shariff and a snap shot by Russell Short was competently handled by the keeper.Barwell could have taken a first half lead when they split the St Neots defence from a lengthy goalkeeper clearance six minutes before the break but Hickey volleyed wide when he should at least have tested the keeper. The half ended with a good move at the other end when the pace of Sembie-Ferris took him around his marker but at the near post, Dylan Williams’ header was over the bar.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

A bold approach by Barwell immediately after the break laid the foundation for this result. Despite being a man down, they sent on Ebanks-Blake taking off a defensive midfielder and taking the game to St Neots. Jahvan Davidson-Miller outpaced the St Neots defence and drew Reynolds off his line but his clever chip towards goal was acrobatically cleared off the line by the covering Short. As the visitors continued to press Reynolds produced a top notch save to deny Hickey but that was St Neots chance to counter-attack and Williams had a shot blocked and Shariff saw a looping header retrieved by the back-peddling Castle. Tom Wood then set up Sembie-Ferris on the right and his rising shot was well saved by the keeper and two more visiting players were booked for clumsy challenges. After 70 minutes Barwell sent on another attacking player and that proved to be the master stroke as within six minutes of his arrival substitute Nigel Julien won his way to the bye line to cross beyond the far post for Hickey to head back to Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to apply the lethal finishing touch. St Neots responded with Luke Knight bringing a good save from Castle and in a long period of seven minutes added time St Neots failed to produce a significant shot to bother the keeper. Now out of both National competitions St Neots must turn their attention to improving their precarious looking league position.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR OPPONENTS FOR THEIR FIRST EVER VISIT

In fact, this is the first meeting of our two clubs. Hinckley were transferred into the UCL from the Midland Football League where last season they were champions of Division One at Step Six finishing nine points clear of the runnersup, with just six league defeats in their 38 matches, so they came to the UCL on promotion and have started well sitting in midtable with five wins and three draws from their fourteen completed league fixtures. Their main problem seems to be consistency for they have not managed to record two league victories in succession so far this season. However, their five league victories have included a win over Eynesbury just down the road on the opening day of the season. In cup competition they won their first match in the FA Cup – 3-1 at home to Highgate United before losing to Malvern Town in the preliminary round. Then in the FA Vase, they were beaten in their first outing by the odd goal in three away at FC Stratford. They have fared better in the Sports Ground Development league Cup safely negotiating the first two rounds. They first saw off Rainworth Miners Welfare 5-1 at home before winning by the odd goal in five away at Lutterworth Town. Their County Challenge Cup tie saw them beaten at home by the strong Quorn FC in a penalty shoot-out after they had led 1-0 at half time.

Distance wise Hinckley are 66 miles from St Neots and the return fixture scheduled for April next year will be our second furthest league trip this season. Hinckley are currently tenants at Barwell FC.

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS (H)

02-11-2024

GCE HIRE PLANT UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH

ST NEOTS TOWN 8

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS 2

St Neots hit top form to demolish visiting Godmanchester with a polished display of finishing which included six first half goals. The visitors had the questionable reward of a goal in each half but may have got off lightly had the home side not lost both central defenders in a topsy-turvy first half. It was the fourth time that St Neots had notched eight goals or more in a league match since moving to the Premier Plus St.adium. With Michael Amaeshike and Murphy Culkin both unavailable, Dammy Nickels and Nathan George came back into the side – the latter after injury, but first half injuries to George and Charlie Bowen left St Neots unbalanced in defence but still managed to double their goals tally with a patched-up back line. Man of the match Rhys Thorpe took over as the sides’ leading scorer as he took his personal goals tally to fourteen in twenty starts with the sides’ first league hat trick of the season. Without a midweek match there will be time for the injured players to recover for another home league date next week, when in-form Hinckley are the opposition for their first ever visit to St Neots.

The first fifteen minutes saw Godmanchester start brightly without testing the home keeper. St Neots had two early openings with Kieran Barnes volleying over the bar before seeing a second net-bound effort blocked by the legs of the visiting keeper. Then after 16 minutes St Neots went ahead when Rhys Thorpe took full advantage of a defensive error to open the scoring. Two minutes later the score was doubled when a long throw by Dammy Nickels was headed on by Thorpe for Connor Furlong to apply the finishing touch and it was three goals in seven minutes when a long clearance from home goalkeeper James Goff was allowed to bounce between two defenders and the lively Kieran Barnes went around the visiting keeper to finish from a narrow angle. After 27 minutes it was 4-0 when Thorpe headed a Furlong cross back from the far post for Sam Willis to score his third league goal of the season but either side of this goal St Neots lost both central defenders to injury. In the reshaped home defence skipper Robbie Parker and the versatile Willis formed an unlikely central pairing and in the reshuffle Ronnie Sutherland and Danny Baulk came on as substitutes. Godmanchester took advantage of the temporary reshuffle as Dan Brown pulled back a goal from a corner but in sixty seconds just before the break, St Neots re-established their grip on the match by adding two further goalsthe first from substitute Danny Baulk and the second from Rhys Thorpe set up by Furlong.

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS (H)

02-11-2024

Godmanchester began the second half well with Lewis Arber converting a Declan Rogers free kick to make the score 6-2 but any thoughts of a visiting comeback was snuffed out as St Neots buckled down. Williams was replaced by Lamin Jammeh and St Neots slowed the pace and restricted the visiting side to shooting from distance. Goalmouth action became restricted although St Neots dominated possession although Furlong did test the visiting keeper. With fifteen minutes remaining Rhys Thorpe completed a well-deserved hat trick again with the assistance of Furlong, and substitute Marley Pitts-Wallace-Luke scored his first St Neots goal in the final minute of normal time to complete the 8-2 rout.

HINCKLEY AFC

Hinckley AFC is a community owned club that was established in January 2014, following the liquidation of Hinckley United. The club aims to promote football for all in the Hinckley and Bosworth community, and is built on a structure of one vote per member. The club is committed to investing its money into football at all ages in the community, with a constitutional promise not to take any profits out of the club. The town of Hinckley has had a football team for many years, the earliest recorded team being Hinckley Town, who played in the Leicestershire Senior League in 1889. Following a name change to Hinckley Athletic, the club acquired land on Middlefield Lane, and in the mid-1990s they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Southern League on three occasions. Meanwhile, Hinckley Town were formed after changing their name from Westfield Wanderers in 1972, and they were promoted to the Southern League after a successful spell in the 1980s.

In the summer of 1997, the two chairmen, Kevin Downes (Town) and Mick Voce (Athletic) established that both sides had something positive to offer a merger. Thus, Hinckley Town and Hinckley Athletic became Hinckley United.

The intention of the merger was to create a higher standard of football in the town, something which was achieved when United won promotion to the Southern League Premier Division in 2001.

After finishing in 6th place in 2003/04, United were accepted into the newly formed Conference North. They moved into a new ground, on Leicester Road, in March 2005. After a successful start in 2006/07, tragedy struck when Matt Gadsby passed away while playing for the club at Harrogate Town on 9th September 2006. They went on to reach the play-off final, but lost out 4-3 to Farsley Celtic after conceding a last minute penalty.

Seasons of financial woe followed, and after being relegated from the Conference North in 2012/13, the club was liquidated six months later.

After appointing Carl Abbott as their first manager, Hinckley AFC’s first match was on 5th July 2014, a 4-2 win against landlords Heather St John’s. Abbott led AFC to a third-place finish in the Midland League First Division in their inaugural season, including setting a new league record for matches unbeaten. They went 27 without defeat in all competitions from 21st October until 28th April, when they were defeated in the Leicestershire Senior Cup Final. the on-field success continued into the start of the 2015/16 season, when they overturned a Redditch United side from three levels higher in the pyramid to reach the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in their first campaign in the competition. That season, the club finished fifth in the league and won their first piece of silverware: going one better than the previous season by winning the Senior Cup with a 5-1 victory over Oakham United in the Final.

Opponent Spotlight

HINCKLEY AFC

Continuing the theme of building on their success each season, 2016/17 yielded a new best league finish, with AFC ending as runners-up behind unbeaten champions Bromsgrove Sporting. Alongside that there were best ever runs in the FA Vase, where Abbott’s men reached the last 16 stage but were beaten in extra time by Buckland Athletic, and the Polymac Packaging League Cup, where they reached the final.

Abbott stepped down the following October, and the club had several managers for short spells between then and the present day – Dale Belford, Richard Lavery, James Jepson and John Ramshaw all with brief tenures before Dale’s son Courtney HunterBelford took charge in the summer to give renewed optimism after a disappointing campaign.

Covid regulations prevented him being able to complete either of his first two seasons in charge, ahead of the club’s move to the United Counties League in 2021/22.

But there the club mirrored their second-placed finish of five years previously, setting numerous records along the way. They hit a new FA Vase record 18-0 win at St Martin's in the FA Vase and set a 13-match winning streak on their way to the play-off final. Ultimately, though, defeat to Belper United in the final meant another crack at step six and lateral movement back to the Midland League after just one season away. Hunter-Belford stepped down due to work commitments, with his assistant Joe Conneely taking charge, though the duo were re-united at the helm months later. They guided the side to a third-placed finish but suffered play-off defeat again, this time at the hands of Droitwich Spa on penalties in the semi-final. The club did, though, go one better in the Midland Football League Cup, winning the final, at Walsall's Bescot Stadium, by beating Premier Division Whitchurch Alport 2-0. The 2023/24 season saw Hinckley remain in the Midland League and have the best start to a campaign since formation, staying in the top five and losing only two matches until January 2024. A run undefeated throughout March, including an important late win against nearest rivals Droitwich Spa, saw Hinckley win the Division One title, fittingly away at Heather St John's, on 6th April 2024 courtesy of an 82nd-minute winning goal by Chandler Pegg.

Now with Conneely back in sole charge, AFC were placed in the United Counties Premier Division South for the club’s first season at step five.

The memory of Matt Gadsby lives on through his wife Sarah and daughter Amelia, who hold the membership Number One of Hinckley AFC.
