BLAST FROM THE PAST

UCL KO Cup Round Two (2nd November 2010)

ST NEOTS TOWN 8 ON CHENECKS 1

Eight was the key number at the Hunts Post Community Stadium in the midweek Knockout Cup match. Saints Manager Dennis Greene made EIGHT changes from the starting side in the previous match at Holbeach and then saw his side score EIGHT goals against their lower grade opponents to move into the last EIGHT in the competition. Their opponents in the next match will be Kings Lynn if they beat Irchester in their outstanding second round tie. Apart from the obvious result of winning the match Greene must have been delighted for the chance to display the size and quality of his first team squad and give several of them the chance to stake their claim for a first team berth if any of the regulars fail to perform.

Despite the wholesale changes in the side it took St Neots only eight minutes to impose themselves on their Division One visitors as Bryn Williams slipped a short pass to Lewis Hilliard who scored with a low shot. Five minutes later the advantage was doubled as Matt Haniver picked out the head of the unmarked Roy Essendoh at the far post and he placed his finish well wide of the overworked visiting keeper Andy Curran. However the inspiration for St Neots in a first half of what was often exhibition football was Kieran Davies. He terrorised the Chenecks defence running freely down the right flank and providing a stream of accurate crosses to keep the visitors at full stretch. A perfect example of this was St Neots third goal as Davies left two defenders trailing in his wake to cross for Roy Essendoh to apply a simple tap in finish.Curran then produced an outstanding save to push a Davies shot over the bar but after 27 minutes the flanker inspired the fourth goal with a subtle change of tactics and a near post cross converted by Bryn Williams. However six minutes later the biggest cheer of the match came for the fifth goal as Kieran Davies showed a fine turn of pace to outstrip the defence to collect a long forward pass by Lewis Hilliard to deservedly put his name of the score sheet.St Neots goalkeeper Luke McShane recalled for this match after a six match absence following his red card at Newport Pagnell had been a spectator whilst the goals had been going in at the other end but eight minutes before the break his displayed his customary sharpness to leave his area and clear after Adam Fry had given the ball away and right on half time he did well under pressure to push away a cross cum shot from Elliott Muddiman.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

TChenecks had their best spell of the match in the opening ten minutes after the break.Their most dangerous player Muddiman was prominent as he beat his man to cross on to the head of the unmarked Kieran White who headed tamely over the bar from eight yards and then he ran on to a through pass from Harry Barnes to calmly round McShane and claim an unlikely consolation goal for the visitors. However usual service was quickly resumed, and play became one way again after St Neots had introduced Shane Tolley and Dan Jacob as substitutes.Tony Scully who had a relatively quiet match saw a net bound shot deflected over the bar but a typical one touch move by St Neots produced the sixth goal as Scully and Hilliard combined to set up Dan Jacob. Two more goals in as many minutes put Chenecks back on the rack as Jacob teased defenders before crossing for Roy Essendoh to head home to complete his hat trick and Jacob was again the architect of the final goal as he sent Kieran Davies away to notch his second goal of the match from a narrow angle.Thereafter Curran kept the score down with three notable saves as St Neots cruised through the final fifteen minutes of a very useful workout.

St Neots Town: McShane, Haniver, Hyem (M), Fry, Gent, Fordham, Davies, Hilliard, Essendoh, Williams, Scully.

Subs: Tolley (for Williams 58 mins), Jacob (for Fry 61 mins), Webb (for Hilliard 71 mins), Jones & Fuff.

Man of the match: Kieran Davies

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR VISITORS NORTHAMPTON ON CHENECKS

This is to be only the third time our Northampton visitors have joined us at St Neots and the first time at the Premier Plus Stadium because their last two visits in 1994 and 2010 were to our former home at the bottom of the estate. It was 31 years ago that our two teams first met when we were both in the lower tier of the United Counties League. In that season – our first back in the UCL since our reformation – we beat our visitors 4-0 before going on to complete a double with a victory at Billing Road by the odd goal in three. Then in 2010 – our last UCL season prior to our promotion to the Southern League – Chenecks returned when we were at our best and we beat them 8-1 in the League Cup.For the record our scorers that day were Roy Essendoh (3), Kieran Davies (2), Dan Jacob, Lewis Hilliard, and Bryn Williams. Going back to our earlier meetings in 1994/95 I note that a youthful Iain Parr scored in both games!!

However back to the present. Chenecks were moved sideways at the start of the season from the South Midlands League to the UCL and they are enjoying their best season for some time. Currently eighth in the table in a very competitive division, they were occupying a play-off slot at the start of last month before losing two consecutive away matches at Histon and Newport Pagnell. At present only four points separate the six clubs lying fifth to tenth in the table – all vying for that fourth play-off place at the end of the season in less than two months’ time. Chenecks have performed well away from home this season with league victories at Eynesbury, Coventry United, Easington, Yaxley and Oadby, as well as a creditable draw at Aylestone Park. Earlier this season our two sides shared the points in a midweek 2-2 draw at Billing Road with Michael Amaeshike and Christian Tavernier (his only goal this season) earning us a point. In the FA Cup this season Chenecks recorded a thumping 6-0 Extra Preliminary Round start at Leicester Nirvana but were then beaten 3-2 at home by Barton Town from the Northern Counties East Premier Division. In the FA Vase they enjoyed their best ever run in the competition squeezing through a first-round qualifying match beating neighbours Northampton Sileby in a penalty shoot-out and then went on to beat Bugbrooke, Heather St John, and Kirby Muxloe, before losing in the third round proper at home to Bourne Town. Meantime in the League Cup they lost by the odd goal in five at Dunkirk.

Previous meetings of our teams:

GCE HIRE FLEET UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH

ST NEOTS TOWN 2 SILEBY RANGERS 0

With Aylestone Park inactive and Rugby Borough dropping home points, St Neots extended their lead at the top of the table to eleven points with another comfortable home victory. Their two goals came in the final twenty minutes after they had dominated much of the play against a stubborn visiting defence. Sileby arrived at the Premier Plus Stadium with four victories in their last six league matches and proved they are a force to be reckoned with. St Neots refused to be cowed when they were unable to break down the visiting defence and persevered after having the ball in the net twice but having both efforts ruled out by an offside flag. They made two team changes from their last match with the influential Charlie Bowen returning at the heart of the defence for James Peters, and new signing Cole Butler making his first appearance for the absent Kieran Barnes who was on holiday.

On a dull drizzly afternoon there was little to excite in the opening half hour. St Neots enjoyed the lions share of possession but found the visiting defence firm and well organised, and a single lengthy effort by new boy Cole Butler that flew wide was their only early threat towards the visiting goalkeeper. For the visitors the pacey Lamin Jammeh tested James Goff, but after 34 minutes St Neots thought they had broken through when Murphy Culkin got the ball in the net, but an offside flag quelled the celebrations. Harvey Williams was the main home threat, but no one seemed able to get on the end of his searching crosses and a second St Neots effort was chalked off by the offside flag. The visitors threatened little seeming content to clear their lines with little attacking menace and just before the break Rhys Thorpe should have taken advantage of another Williams cross but unmarked, he headed well wide of his target.

John Walker's Match Report

SILEBY RANGERS (H)

08-02-2025

The visitors began the second half more brightly but failed to get a significant shot on target. The ball was in the visiting net for a third time, but Bowen was clearly offside and then the same player headed over from a Williams cross. St Neots’ only anxious moment came after 57 minutes when a Sileby attack caught their defence napping and an angled shot from Dylan Surace beat Goff at his near post but Culkin got back to clear off the line. Butler was then substituted in a straight swap with Danny Baulk who sixty seconds after his introduction was only inches short of connecting with a Connor Furlong cross in front of a gaping net. In a rare Sileby attacking foray Michael Cirelli shot over the bar for the visitors and at the other end from a Williams cross, Baulk’s header was too high. The longawaited breakthrough came after 72 minutes when from a Willis free kick, a well placed near post header by Charlie Bowen gave St Neots the lead. Now St Neots played with greater confidence and Baulk shot narrowly wide before from another Willis free kick after 84 minutes Michael Amaeshike got behind the visiting defence to net a second goal from close range. It was a patient and well-deserved victory that leaves St Neots in a position where they can only themselves lose the advantage they have set up as they chase their automatic promotion ambition.

BUGBROOKE St MICHAELS (A) 15-02-2025

GCE HIRE FLEET UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH

BUGBROOKE St MICHAELS 0 St NEOTS TOWN 5

St Neots extended their lead at the top of the table to fourteen points with a five goals, five- star performance at lowly Bugbrooke. It now seems that automatic promotion at the end of the season is theirs to lose for with just eight league matches to go their main opponents seem to have faltered. The match was played in atrocious conditions – ankle deep mud in places –and the persistent drizzle was always present. Bugbrooke came on the back of a surprise draw away at third placed Rugby Borough and were buzzing with confidence in a fairly evenly fought first half. St Neots prevailed and dominated after the break with Kieran Barnes back in the side to claim his first league hat trick in a St Neots shirt. His return to the side after holiday was the only change to the team with recent signing Cole Butler making way. It was St Neots’ best away victory of the season and with a free Saturday to follow they will be raring to continue their winning streak at home to ON Chenecks on Saturday week.

St Neots got the perfect start after just four minutes when Kieran Barnes took full advantage of defensive hesitation to win the ball and chip the home keeper. The home side responded with Patrick Cichosz firing wide after a swift counterattack, and then Shad Reza burst through but also fired wide. Connor Furlong was a lively thorn in the home defence, and he fired over the bar on the turn in a packed area before forcing home keeper Nial Shackleton into a full length save. Reza then tested James Goff in the visitors goal before St Neots finished the first half strongly as Michael Amaeshike set up Furlong who took the ball too close to the keeper who smothered his shot, Sam Willis tested the home keeper with a header from a corner, and another Furlong cross was blocked on the goal line by a defender.

John Walker's Match Report

BUGBROOKE St MICHAELS (A)

15-02-2025

St Neots returned after the break looking confident and determined and Barnes fired wastefully over the bar after great work by Rhys Thorpe. Then after 55 minutes Furlong threaded a ball trough a square lying home defence and Rhys Thorpe beat the offside trap with pace to break away and slide the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to extend St Neots’ lead. A Barnes effort was deflected for a corner and then just past the hour Shackleton saved well from Furlong. For the home side the lively Reza broke through but fired wide and then after 69 minutes Thorpe went clear on goal, but Shackleton again blocked his finish. However, after 72 minutes after his first effort was blocked Kieran Barnes followed up to net his second goal of the match, and five minutes later completed his hat trick with a clever dribble around the keeper to find the corner of the net. The icing on a very wet cake arrived a minute into added time when veteran striker/substitute Shane Fox won the ball at the far post to complete the scoring.

MARCH

TOWN UNITED (A) 18-02-2025

HINCHINGBROOKE CUP SEMI-FINAL

MARCH TOWN UNITED 2 St NEOTS TOWN 2 (MARCH TOWN WIN 5-4 ON PENS)

For the second successive season St Neots bowed out of the Hinchingbrooke Cup at March, this time in dramatic fashion losing a penalty shoot-out after a hard-fought draw with the sides sharing four goals. Cameron Mawer’s side will think they should have progressed to their first Hinchingbrooke Cup Final since 2011 because they had led 2-0 after half an hour and looked well in control. However, March have built up the reputation of being something of a bogey side because in four meetings at the GER Sports Ground in the past two seasons the visiting side has been beaten three times. Player eligibility rules meant that the St Neots squad was short in numbers with just two substitutes named but there was only one team change with Danny Baulk replacing the unavailable Harvey Williams. March will go on to defend the trophy they won last season in a final tie against the winners of the outstanding semi-final between Deeping Rangers and Eaton Socon.

The match could hardly have started better for St Neots because in their first attack after just two minutes Michael Amaeshike converted a Sam Willis cross at the far post. Five minutes Baulk beat his marker and cut in but this time his effort was blocked by a defender. The visitors continued to have the better of play and after 18 minutes a shot by Michael Amaeshike passed the wrong side of a post and Connor Furlong was also off target after more good work by Willis. Then after 28 minutes a corner from Murphy Culkin was turned in by Charlie Bowen to give St Neots that two goals advantage. The home side managed little to threaten the visiting goal although they did see a shot rebound from the crossbar following a corner. After the break the home side looked more positive although Furlong might have increased the lead, but he shot wide after neat play by Christian Tavernier. However, after making substitutions the home side began to get a foothold in the contest, and Williams began to tease St Neots defence setting up a couple of chances that went begging.

MARCH TOWN UNITED (A)

The turning point in the contest came after 70 minutes when Sam Willis conceded a penalty. The St Neots player protested too loudly and was sinbinned for ten minutes and from the penalty kick Danny Emmington netted to reduce the arrears. Now St Neots were under some pressure but they defended well until seven minutes from time when home substitute Danny Escorsio netted from close range to send the outcome of the tie into a penalty shoot-out.

The first four kicks were successful despatched but then home keeper Jonah Gill saved Murphy Culkin’s penalty whist the home players produced five perfect spot kicks to claim their place in the Cup Final.

Opponent Spotlight

O. N. CHENECKS FC

The club was founded as Chenecks FC in 1946 under the guidance of well-known Coroner Sergeant of the Borough Police, George Lloyd. The club was formed to enable boys at the rugby playing Northampton Grammar School to play football. The club’s unusual name is derived from the School Houses, Chipsey, Spencer, Beckett and St Crispins.

The club became members of the Northampton Minor League playing at Under 17 level, and when the team were too old for youth football the club joined the Northampton Town League in 1950, playing at Abington Park. In 1960 the Old Northamptonians Association invited the club to become one of their sports sections, thus Chenecks became ON Chenecks and relocated to the Billing Road sports ground.

They joined the United Counties Football League in 1969, and have had continuous membership ever since, albeit for most of the early years in the lower divisions of the league. The club has twice won the Division One Championship in 1977-78 and 1979–80, but were denied promotion to the Premier Division due to ground grading criteria as the club were restricted to develop their shared facilities. ON Chenecks beat Tam O’Shanter from Coventry to win the 1985 Daventry Charity Cup final and in 1994 they were Northants Junior Cup runnersup, losing 1-0 to Vanaid. In 1996 they lost 4-0 to Cogenhoe in the Daventry Charity Cup final having beaten Southern League Rothwell Town 1-0 away en route to the final. In the 2009–10 season the club won its first major honour under the guidance of Andy Marks when they picked up the Northants Junior Cup with a 1-0 victory over local rivals N’ton Silbey Rangers at Nene Park. The 2010–11 season saw rookie manager Graham Cottle accept the vacant position. Under his guidance the club had considerable success, winning the Northants Junior Cup in 2013/14 and 2014/15 and gaining promotion to the top UCL flight for the first time in the club’s history after finishing runners up in 2015/16. The club also participated in a national competition for the first time, defeating Sun Sports 2-1 in the FA Vase.

TUnder the guidance of Chairman Mr E Slinn, developments have also progressed of the field, with the erection of floodlights, extra seating, pitch barriers etc over the last couple of years which has enabled the club to secure the sufficient ground grading criteria.

In 2016/17 as well as participating in UCL Premier Division topflight, the club entered the FA Cup for the first time, losing to Harefield United in a replay. After finishing a highly respectable 12th position in their first topflight season, Chenecks had a change in management with highly respected UCL prolific goal scorer Ben Foster taking over the managers hot seat, with a 17th place finish in the 2017-18 season and 15th spot secured in 2018-19. Club Secretary Bryan Lewin picked up the UCL Administrator of the Year Award in 2019. As with all other clubs and leagues, the last two seasons have been affected by the Covid pandemic, which has seen both campaigns unfinished, although both the First and Reserves did reach the UCL Supplementary Cup finals in 2020-21, with the Reserves defeating Harborough 4-3 after penalty kicks to secure the trophy. In the close season Ben Foster stepped down for personal reasons and has been replaced internally with two of his backroom staff; Lee Burdett and Wayne Richardson promoted as Joint Managers.

After two seasons with Covid restrictions the 2021-22 season saw Chenecks finish second from bottom, despite a strong end to the campaign. As part of the FA’s National League System restructuring, Chenecks relegation saw them placed in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One along with a host of ex-UCL clubs. Last season the club had a new management team, headed by Jamie Forester. The new look side had an excellent campaign finishing just nine points shy of runaway champions Real Bedford but lost out in the final play-off promotion match to Rugby Borough.
