UCL PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots 1 Daventry Town 3

St Neots Manager Steve Lomas was left cursing his luck after watching a second consecutive home defeat for his side. The smiles on the faces of the Daventry players at the end of the game spoke volumes. They had played for more than 50 minutes with just ten men and had survived St Neots hitting the woodwork on three occasions yet still travelled back to Northamptonshire with three valuable points as the top half a dozen sides jockey for finishing places. The sending off of Richard Wesley for an awful tackle on Matt Bannister actually worked against St Neots interests because from that point on Daventry’s only aim was to protect their lead leaving just one player up front. St Neots created chances but were frustrated both by the woodwork and a hard-working solid defence that gave little away. Even with four recognised strikers on the field for the last half hour St Neots never really threatened to make their extra man pay.

St Neots began very confidently creating the first five chances in the match.Visiting keeper Joe Mellings who looked solid and confident throughout saved well from the inform Chris Johnson after neat play by Matt Kenneford and then Callum Reed glanced a header from a Luke Knight corner the wrong side of the far post. Kenneford was again the provider to set up Josh Sozzo after 14 minutes, but Mellings got down to save at the second attempt and then a well struck free kick by Luke Knight was fisted out of a crowded six yards box by the keeper. With 21 minutes gone Sozzo against tested the keeper who allowed the ball to squirt free and Johnson retrieved it to cross for Michael Hyem whose uncontrolled acrobatic volley flew wide. Then there was a gasp of incredulity around the ground as Daventry scored with their first shot at goal after 22 minutes as Andrew Gordon hit a tremendous shot from 30 yards that beat goalkeeper Lee Crockett for pace, and it flew in off the underside of the crossbar. St Neots continued to have much the better of the possession and Johnson again brought an important save from Mellings and a volley from Josh Sozzo rebounded from a post. Then six minutes before the break Daventry went further ahead with an opportunistic shot from well outside the area by Tom Berwick cutting in from the left and unleashing a fierce shot across the surprised goalkeeper. Sixty seconds later the score was 3-0 as Steve Dogbe and Lee Crockett both hesitated leaving a through ball to each other and Richard Wesley was quickly in to score a simple close-range goal. A further minute later the visitors were reduced to ten men and St Neots saw another chance go begging as a Glen Fuff volley was pushed for a corner.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

St Neots sent on Ismael Ehui after half time to boost their strike power and within a further quarter of an hour Pete Okechukwu was also on giving the side that unprecedented four strikers on the field. Ehui made a quick impact heading against a post and both Michael Hyem and Sozzo were close to reducing the arrears. However the only second half joy for St Neots came after 74 minutes when a mazy run past two defenders by Ehui set up Chris Johnson for St Neots’ consolation goal. There was still time for both sides to hit the woodwork again – Berwick for Daventry in a area breakaway and Ehui again for St Neots. Even in time added st Neots were still bombarding the Daventry goal but Glen Fuff’s header was touched over the bar by the visiting goalkeeper.

St Neots: Crockett, Reed, Bannister, Hyem, Fuff, Dogbe, Kenneford, Knight, Sozzo, Johnson, Abraham

Subs: Ehui (for Kenneford 46 mins), Okechukwu (for Abraham 61 mins), Hughes, Rogers & Mackney.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR VISITORS DAVENTRY TOWN FOR OUR PENULTIMATE LEAGUE MATCH

Daventry accompanied us in relegation from Step Four to the UCL at the end of the 2022/23 season. They had finished in 19th place in the final table and were automatically relegated and we finished one place and eight point better off but shunned a possible reprieve when we were beaten 6-1 at home by Lye Town in the play-off. Last season attempting to regain Step Four status Daventry finished ninth in the final table whilst our lads finished fourth but were beaten in the play-offs by Aylestone Park.

Currently seventh in the league table following last week’s 4-0 home defeat by Coventry United, Daventry have a game in hand over the two clubs above them, but they face the toughest of run-ins after today to the end of the season with successive trips to Eynesbury, March and Aylestone Park before winding up their season at home to Easington. In the FA Cup they were beaten away from home in the extra-preliminary by Hereford side Westfields, but in the FA Vase they had a memorable run playing six matches to reach the fifth round proper before losing in a penalty shoot out in Kent at Erith and Belvedere. They had seen off Rushden and Higham, Highgate United, Staveley Miners Welfare, Newark Town, and March Town United – four of those six matches away from home. In the League Cup they were beaten in another penalty shoot-out at Boston Town, and in the Northants Senior Cup they were beaten 2-0 at home by an U23 Northampton Town XI. So regardless of their main ambition being promotion back to Step Four they have enjoyed a fairly memorable season.

Previous meetings of our teams:

There have been eight league meetings at St Neots between today’s teams – one on our previous facility at the bottom of the estate and the rest here at the Premier Plus Stadium. Our best ever victory over our visitors was achieved on our former ground – we won 7-1 on 2nd October 2004 with goals from Liam Harrold (2), Paul Bloss (2), Ozzie Foster, Ian Trott, and Jon Hoggett. The overall record in league matches between our two sides (15 league matches) is:

St Neots 7 victories, Daventry 5 victories plus three drawn matches. The only goalless draw came earlier this season at Daventry. Four of Daventry’s five league victories against our lads have been league ‘doubles’ in 2008/09 and 2019/20.

Enjoy the match.

ST NEOTS TOWN 3 O.N. CHENECKS 2

Intent on maintaining their hard-earned lead at the top of the table, St Neots had to rally to come back from behind twice to earn three more precious points in their quest for promotion at the end of the season. Visitors ON Chenecks had held Cameron Mawer’s side to a draw in the first meeting this season of the two sides at Northampton and leading by the odd goal in three after an hour of this match, they were threatening to dent St Neots’ championship hopes. Then, in a late rally, St Neots’ leading scorer Rhys Thorpe scored twice in a three minutes’ spell before his side hung on to repel a late Chenecks push for a third goal and a share of the points. There was just one team change from the Hinchingbrooke Cup defeat at March, with Harvey Williams returning to replace Danny Baulk who was on the bench.

St Neots got off to a lightning start and could have been two goals up on the first five minutes. After just 40 seconds Rhys Thorpe played Kieran Barnes through the visiting defence but the visiting goalkeeper got down to block his finish and in the next significant St Neots attack Sam Willis overlapped on the right but his narrow- angled shot was bundled out for a corner. After six minutes the visitors displayed how dangerous their attack could be when former Saint, Lewis Irwin, got behind the home defence to beat the Saints keeper, but skipper Robbie Parker got back to clear off the line! However, St Neots’ luck was compromised five minutes later when a clearance rebounded off a home player and landed at the feet of Romeo Ingman who sent a smart finish past the stranded home keeper to open the scoring. Another sharp finish by Ijah Augustine flew over the St Neots crossbar and the home side had to work hard to get back into the match. Then, after 27 minutes, the hard- working Rhys Thorpe rose high above his marker to knock down a cross from the left and CONNOR FURLONG produced a perfectly placed finish just under the bar to level the scores. Three minutes later the visitors regained the lead when Ray Poku cut in to set up Lewis Irwin for a goal against his former Club. The nearest St Neots got to a second equaliser before the break was a Thorpe header from a free kick that visiting keeper Bradley Lashley did well to push around a post for a corner.

St Neots came out after the break in determined fashion and in the first five minutes Michael Amaeshike was twice close to levelling the scores. First a header from a Sam Willis cross was well saved and then a closerange volley hit the body of the visiting keeper before being scrambled clear. A Barnes header was comfortably saved and now the visitors were concentrating on defence in a bid to protect their narrow lead. However, St Neots were determined to make their possession pay and after 67 minutes they got their reward when leading scorer RHYS THORPE rose at the far post to convert a Willis cross to level the scores. Three minutes later it was THORPE again who put St Neots in front from a Barnes pass. After Ray Poku had squandered a chance to level the scores, Chenecks threw on two attacking substitutes to try to get back into the contest but they never looked likely to spoil St Neots comeback until added time when substitute Tyrun Primus and Romeo Ingman both squandered good openings to snatch a late share of the points.

St Neots advantage at the top of the league table was extended to eight points as they won at Easington Sports, whilst neighbours Eynesbury Rovers did them a huge favour as they defeated second placed Aylestone Park by the odd goal in five. Now as the season draws towards a close St Neots know that three victories and a draw from their remaining six league matches would guarantee them automatic promotion back to Step Four. The victory at Easington came courtesy of a first half double from Rhys Thorpe – his 25th and 26th goals of the season. Again, Manager Cameron Mawer was able to name an unchanged line up as his side completed their tenth league double of the season.

In the first half hour the visitors bossed the game dominating possession and creating a host of chances leaving their goalkeeper as a virtual spectator. The opening goal after five minutes was created by Connor Furlong who teasing cross was too high for home keeper Adam Doyle and then he failed to get any length on his attempted punched clearance the ball fell to Rhys Thorpe who applied the finishing touch. Ten minutes later home defender Ellis Champkins had to clear off the line from Harvey Williams and in the next St Neots attack sixty seconds later, an angled shot from Furlong rebounded from a goalpost with the home keeper beaten. The pressure on the home goal continued as Mike Amaeshike volleyed narrowly wide and the inevitable second goal arrived on the half hour when Murphy Culkin set up Rhys Thorpe for his second goal. At 2-0 St Neots seemed to coast for the remainder of the first half but they never looked like conceding their two goals advantage.

EASINGTON SPORTS (A)

The home side came out in a more positive frame after the break and substitute Luke Fuller became the first Easington player to test the visiting keeper. The home side were looking more positive and confident as Ellis Champkin then found the roof of the St Neots net from a corner. At the other end Harvey Williams shot narrowly wide after a mazy run and then the visitors introduced a further substitute to boost their attack. Jake Humphreys twice headed wide and despite having the bulk of attacking play the home side never seriously tested visiting keeper James Goff. The final fifteen minutes saw multiple substitutions which served to nullify any serious attacking play by either side and St Neots saw out the match comfortably well happy with their seemingly unassailable three points and two goals cushion.

LUTTERWORTH TOWN 0 ST NEOTS TOWN 2

St Neots continued in their pursuit of promotion to Step Four with an effective but unspectacular victory over struggling Lutterworth Town. In an impressive start to the match, they bombarded the home goal for the first half hour deservedly running up a two goals lead but after that despite totally controlling possession they never really looked like extending that lead.A missed penalty compounded their disappointment, and they will be looking to regain a more ruthless approach in their remaining five matches with three victories needed to ensure the Championship and promotion. Their hosts proved to be stubborn in defence and St Neots’ goalkeeper had a relatively easy afternoon apart from one early scare. Again, Manager Cameron Mawer was able to\ name his first-choice team selection, and his defence obliged with their usual efficiency having now conceded just three goals in their last nine league matches.

The first period saw one-way traffic towards the home goal. After six minutes the first goal arrived when Michael Amaeshike ghosted in to convert a Murphy Culkin cross from the left and two minutes later the score could have doubled when a Connor Furlong shot rebounded from a goalpost. It did not take too long for that second goal to arrive when after 19 minutes from a Kieran Barnes cross, Michael Amaeshike arrived at the far post to claim his fifteenth goal of the campaign. However, between those two goals St Neots suffered their only scare of the match when a misplaced back pass sent home striker Jude Coates clear on goal, but James Goff raced out of his area to acrobatically divert the shot at his unguarded net away with his feet. That was the keeper’s only real involvement in the match until just before the break when two misguided efforts by the home attack were wide of target. Harvey Williams looked lively on the left flank for the visiting side, and he provided two searching crosses that failed to find a colleague before shooting wide himself.

The second half resumed with St Neots still dictating much of the play. Both Connor Furlong and Rhys Thorpe saw net bound shots blocked in the same attack in the first two minutes after the restart and then Williams burst through but saw his effort pass the wrong side of a post. Unmarked in the area Thorpe squandered a good chance heading a Williams cross over the bar and then the lively winger was upended in the penalty area and a spot kick awarded. The usually reliable Sam Willis seemed to under hit his attempted penalty that was scrambled clear, and then when the same St Neots player was again brough down – this time just outside the area – this tim Barnes’ free kick was too high. Amaeshike almost completed his hat trick from a corner, but his headed effort was just too high, and then substitute Cole Butler on for Williams, fired over the bar.Just before the end Furlong sent a fierce volley over the bar as St Neots settled for the points with that never threatened two goal cushion.

(St Neots won 6-5 on penalties)

Ever since COVID St Ives had dominated the Huntingdonshire Senior Cup competition winning the trophy on three consecutive occasions but St Neots put an end to that run as they triumphed in a penalty shoot-out after a thrilling 2-2 draw. It was St Neots 39th victory in the competition but their first since 2014 – when they defeated St Ives! Since then, there had been just two semi-final meetings of the two sides in the competition, both won by St Ives who had gone on to lift the trophy on each occasion It was an excellent match which came to a climax in the final eight minutes with three goals and that dramatic penalty shoot-out. The crowd of 557 witnessed skipper Robbie Parker lifting the trophy for St Neots for the first time for 11 years amidst noisy celebrations and now St Neots must refocus on picking up enough points from their remaining five games to crown the season with promotion to Step Four.

St Neots began brightly with Harvey Williams twice getting free to provide crosses that failed to find colleagues in front of goal. St Ives then saw a free kick rebound from the crossbar and after a quarter of an hour St Neots created two chances – the first a free kick from Kieran Barnes that was deflected wide by a defender and the second bringing a full length save from Charlie Bowen by St Ives keeper Dan Wilks. As the contest moved towards half time Johnson Gyamfi saw a close range shot for the visitors blocked by a St Neots defender whilst at the other end a Michael Amaeshike header from a Sam Willis cross was comfortably gathered by Wilks. Then three minutes before half time St Neots took the lead when from a Willis corner Charlie Bowen netted from close range to put the hosts in front.

DAVENTRY TOWN FC

Since forming in 1886 Daventry Town Football Club has had a chequered history over its 132 years, from a devastating fire in 2005 which threatened the club’s existence to an incredible cup run which saw over 700 fans travel to League 2 Chesterfield in 2014.

Switching to the Northants Combination in 1987, under the guidance of Manager Willie Barrett, the clubs fortunes began to flourish, Barrett leading the club to successive championships in the Northants Combination First and Premier Divisions &in 1989/90 they secured promotion to the United Counties League Division One.

Leaving the “Hollow” in the centre of the town in 1990 when the club moved to its current home at the Elderstubbs, the club’s fortunes suffered a devastating blow in 2005–06, when the Elderstubbs clubhouse and changing rooms were destroyed during an arson attack.

With the club on the brink of going out of business, Iain Humphrey took the helm and work began to revitalise the club with the introduction of new floodlights, walkways and other infrastructure to support the clubs promotion ambitions. 2007–08 was a very successful season for the Town. They won UCL Division One, losing just once, and defeated three Premier division teams en route to the League Knockout Cup final, where they lost to Desborough Town 3–2.

In the season 2009–10, Daventry won promotion to the Southern League Division One Central, by becoming champions of the United Counties League under the guidance of manager Ady Fuller. Daventry Town reached the last 16 of the FA vase, the final of the NFA Senior Cup, beaten by Corby Town by 3 – 2 and the semi – finals of the UCL KO cup before Captain Paul Saunders lifted the UCL championship to secure Daventry Town a coveted place in the Southern League for 2010/11.

Under the guidance of Ady Fuller and assistant Paul Lamb, their first season in the Southern League almost ended with another promotion however they lost in the play off final to Hitchin Town.

Former Aston Villa, Charlton and Republic of Ireland international Mark Kinsella became manager in the summer 2011 however his season long spell was unsuccessful and former Daventry United/Ford Sports Manager Darran Foster was appointed with Neil Champelovier as his assistant in 2012.

Daventry Town made history in 2013-2014 by reaching the First Round of the FA Cup, a visit to Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium their reward. They were eventually beaten by 2 – 0 in front of over 700 of their own travelling supporters and a crowd of over 5269. Town also reached the first round proper of the FA Trophy losing 1 0 to Maidenhead United.

Town reached the final of the Northamptonshire Senior Cup – Hillier Cup beating Cogenhoe United, managed by Andy Marks, 3 – 0, Scott Cross (2) and Luke Keen scoring the goals.

Town had been season-long favourites for promotion from the Southern League Division One Central in 2013 -2014 but the back log of fixtures caused by the cup runs took effect. They lost the promotion play-offs at the semi-final stage at Kettering Town, narrowly beaten 1-0.

Darran Foster resigned as manager on 30th October 2014 following budget cuts and was replaced by former Watford, Oldham and Preston star, Allan Smart. Former Manager Ady Fuller was appointed as his Assistant Manager with the bulk of the players supplied by Smart’s London based Academy.

In the Summer of 2015, the club were moved to the Northern Premier League Division One South and with Smart and the players based in the South, het resigned in July 2015. Darran Foster returned to Daventry Town as Manager just nine months after leaving however he also resigned on Easter Saturday after a 5 0 home defeat to Kidsgrove Athletic. Club Goalkeeping Coach Derren Midson and the Club’s Juniors Development Officer Pete Flockhart stepped in as Caretaker Managers with Brian Porter returning as Club Secretary to ensure the club somehow completed their remaining 6 fixtures of the 2015/2016 season.

In a move planned to reset the club’s financial problems, Town took voluntary relegation to step 6 football and the club returned to the United Counties League Division 1.

In April 2016, Steve Tubb took over as Chairman and on the 12th May 2016, the club appointed Arron Parkinson and Andy Marks as joint managers. With a zero budget for the season, the team management have worked wonders in turning the club around and winning the UCL Division 1 title, unbeaten at home.

Andy Marks left the club at the end of the season due to family and work commitments. Ian King joined Parkinson as Joint Manager in May 2017. Town finished the 2017/18 season in 10th position, winning the Buckingham Charity Cup for the first time.

2018/19 saw the return of the Reserves managed by Andy Emery. Ian King left to join Northampton Town Academy. Arron Parkinson took over as Manager with goalkeeper Matt Finlay as his Assistant Manager and Pete Harris coming in a Club Coach respectively.

After an excellent start to the 2018/19 league season and two FA Cup wins scoring 16 goals in the process, the Town went on to win the UCL Premier Division with a 1 1 draw at Pinchbeck United. The club were presented with the trophy on Easter Monday after a 3 0 win over local rivals and pre-season favourites Rugby Town in front of a crowd of 393. They also won the UCL Knock Out Cup by beating Holbeach United 3 1 in the final at Raunds Town. Town then returned back to the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central. In 2019–20, the club returned to the Southern League, however, the Covid 19 Pandemic meant that they would not complete this or the 2020–21 season.

Sadly during this time, the Town lost three members of the Hobbs family in quick session. Club President, Frank Hobbs died just two weeks after his wife Sarah. Frank’s younger brother, Malcolm Hobbs died just three months later. Between them, they had covered just about every position within the club and had given almost 200 years of combined service to the Town.

In 2021–22, the club moved to the Northern Premier League Midlands Division. After a difficult start to the season, Jim Scott joined the coaching team and along with a number of new signings, Town ended the season in 16th place but 15 points clear of the relegation spots.

The club also started a third male adult team playing in the Northants Combination League Division 3. This team was named Daventry Town Hobbs after the sadly missed Hobbs family.

Off the pitch, the club announced that it had cleared all inherited debts since taking over in 2016 and that the club was now debt free.

The 2022-23 season was challenging for Daventry. A slow start in the tough Northern Premier League led to the budget being cut and manager Arron Parkinson left after 6 seasons. Almost all of the players left leaving a scratch side of reserves and youth team to unsuccessfully avoid relegation from the Northern Premier League.

Prior to the 2023-24 season Daren Young was unveiled as First Team Manager. Following an inconsistent season and with only 2 wins in 2024, the club and Young mutually agreed to part company.

Jamie Forrest was appointed as First Team Manger prior to the 2024-25 season where the club would compete again in the UCL Premier Division South. This season also saw the return of the Reserves to the UCL and will be managed by Jamie Jollands.
