BLAST FROM THE PAST

A memorable day for our current Assistant Manager!

UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots 4

Ford Sports 1

Player/manager Steve Kuhne has scored more than 300 UCL goals – more than half of them for St Neots – but he has seldom had a better afternoon than he had last Saturday when he rewrote the record books. He scored all four St Neots goals in their 4-1 victory over Ford Sports to lift his tally for the season to 42 in league and Cup and also taking him to his highest individual tally for a season and the highest number scored for St Neots in a season since their return to senior football. It was the first time he has scored four in a match for the club and there are still at least eleven matches left for those figures to be further improved. He achieved it without the support of his regular strike twin Gary Walker who was unwell, and this let in 17 years old Sean Murray for his first senior start and although he did not score he can be proud of his first showing full of enthusiasm and strength.

There was a gale blowing down the pitch at the start of the game and St Neots found themselves kicking against it. As a consequence the visitors’ enjoyed early possession and after eight minutes as the St Neots defence waited for an offside flag Dave Bond let fly with a volley that rebounded from a post. Three minutes later the visitors went ahead with a fluke goal as visiting player/manager Shane Geary floated in a long lob that Steve Young seemed to misjudge, and the ball sneaked in at his near post. Those two early efforts were the sum total of Fords’ first half attempts on goal and then St Neots settled down to dominate. Kuhne had the ball in the net after 16 minutes rules out by an offside flag and within two minutes he could not believe his bad luck when a header from a Matt Endersby corner beat the keeper but rebounded from a post. Sean Murray then wasted his best chance of the game shooting wide after being played clear by Kuhne, but St Neots did not have to wait much longer for their threatened equaliser. After 26 minutes from another teasing Endersby corner Steve Kuhne swivelled to volley the ball into the net and only a world-class reflex save from Roger Leeson prevented him from doubling his tally. Cameron Clark should have scored but fired wildly over the bar but a minute before the break St Neots did get the half time lead as Jon Hoggett had a shot blocked on the line, but he chased out wide to retrieve the ball and cross for Kuhne to add to his tally with a full-length diving header.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

The game took a strange twist after the break, as St Neots seemed to lose their impetus. For a spell there was a lack of goalmouth incident and Fords sent on all three substitutes in a bid to boost their efforts. However, after 66 minutes Kuhne was felled by Ian Giles in the area and he climbed to his feet to send Leeson the wrong way from the spot to complete his hat trick. Jon Hoggett then went close with a header as St Neots regained the initiative and the victory was completed seven minutes from time with the award of a second penalty kick when substitute Mark Franklin was tripped. There was little surprise when Kuhne ‘volunteered’ to take the spot kick before trotting off for a well-deserved early bath. It was only left for Franklin to fail to score in an empty net in the final minute with the Fords defence absent.

St Neots Town: Young, Clark (Grant 84 mins), Endersby, Watts, Hurst, Hoggett, Dear, Maltay, (69 mins), Kuhne (Darvall 84 mins), Murray (Franklin 78 mins), Griggs.

Subs not used: Jordan and Matthews.

Goals: Kuhne (FOUR) 26 mins, 44 mins, 66 mins pen, 83 mins pen.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO ALL AT THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM ESPECIALLY TO OUR VISITORS – COVENTRY UNITED

When we travelled to Coventry at the end of November for the first meeting of our two sides this season, our hosts gained revenge for a 6-0 home defeat at the hands of our side last season. They were responsible for inflicting on our lads our first defeat in fifteen league and cup matches so today our lads will be hoping for pay back.St Neots will also be hoping to repeat last season’s performance here when goals from Nabil Shariff (2), Jordan Brown and an own goal gave us a 4-2 victory. Sitting comfortably in mid-table our visitors have won nine and lost nine of their 22 completed league matches – the other four having been drawn.Coventry ground share with Coventry RUFC and last week lost their home match due to a very heavy frost. Away from home this season they have recorded victories at Godmanchester, Leicester Nirvana and Newport Pagnell whilst sharing the points twice in Northampton at ON Chenecks and Sileby Rangers. In Cup competition our visitors have had a tough season being beaten in the first round of all three major competitions. In the FA Cup they lost 3-0 at higher graded Sporting Khalsa, in the FA Vase they were on the wrong end of a 5-4 result in Wolverhampton against AFC Wulfrunians, whilst in the League Cup they were beaten at home in a penalty shoot-out by Deeping Rangers. Their next three scheduled matches are all against our neighbours as they face Eynesbury Rovers (home and away) with a visit from Godmanchester Rovers in between those two matches.

Previous meetings of our teams:

GCE HIRE PLANT UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH

ST NEOTS TOWN 5

EASINGTON SPORTS 0

With Aylestone held to a draw by Coventry United, St Neots Town took full advantage to go back to the top of the table with a ruthless five goal demolition of visitors Easington Sports. In a scintillating display of attacking play the home side scored four times in an eight minutes’ first half spell to destroy their Oxfordshire opponents who were visiting for only the second time and looking to replicate the victory they had recorded at the Premier Plus Stadium last season. With recent victories over Daventry and Godmanchester, Easington were in good form but they were swept away on that tide of St Neots goals and unable to respond despite a plucky second half defensive performance. St Neots made just two team changes with Charlie Bowen and Michael Amaeshike returning at the expense of James Sage and James Peters, the latter being on the substitutes bench.

St Neots were out of the blocks quickly and after just three minutes RHYS THORPE had them ahead with a neat header to a Furlong cross to claim his nineteenth goal of the season. Harvey Williams was running the visiting defence ragged and he set up Michael Amaeshike who’s close range effort was the wrong side of a post. Williams also set up Thorpe with a searching cross, but his finish was also off target. The visitors seldom bothered the home defence with Rob Parker and Charlie Bowen mopping up any serious attacks and then after 28 minutes Thorpe was bundled to the ground, a penalty was awarded, and SAM WILLIS sent the keeper the wrong wat to double St Neots lead. That breakthrough heralded a magic spell for the home side who seemed to add to their lead each time they attacked. Three minutes later CONNOR FURLONG added the third goal again from a Williams assist and a further three minutes later FURLONG doubled his personal tally running onto a clever flick by Thorpe to play him clear. It was 5-0 after 36 minutes when a defensive error presented the ball to KIERAN BARNES and he left the visiting keeper helpless with a crisp finish.

John Walker's Match Report

EASINGTON SPORTS (H)

04-01-2025

So, the match resumed after the break with the visitors visibly strengthening their defence with the addition of two substitutes. St Neots continued their offensive with visiting keeper Max Tremi saving full length to deny Thorpe before saving well from Williams. St Neots then regrouped with a couple of substitutes introduced and seemed happy to play keep-ball as the visitors found it difficult to put together serious attacking moves. In the final half hour St Neots utilised all their substitutes to afford them some match time and despite the visiting side redoubling their efforts they made little headway against the well organised home defence. In the closing stages substitutes Danny Baulk and James Hatch could have added to the score line, but St Neots were clearly happy with their five goals haul that leaves them with a three goals difference over the chasing pack.

They now face a busy month with two midweek cup semi-finals. In the Hunts Senior Cup, they host neighbours Eaton Socon (January 21st) whilst the following Tuesday, in the Hinchingbrooke Cup, they travel to March Town United.

2013

Following the takeover of Coventry Spartans, Coventry United Football Club was founded. Spartan's manager, Edwin Greaves stayed on as Coventry United's first manager, along with club secretary, Graham Wood. The clubs debut league match took place at Kenilworth Town in the Midland Football League Division 3 on Saturday 13 August 2013 with a 2–1 victory. Kenroy Dennisur and Brian Ndlovu scoring the goals that day. United finished runners-up to Kenilworth, securing promotion at the very first attempt. Coventry United also reached their first Cup final, The Challenge Vase losing 3-1 to Enville Athletic FC. The clubs first league title followed the next season. United dominated MFL Division 2, finishing 15 points ahead of its closest rivals. Progression to Step 6 of the Non-League Pyramid followed. Season 3 saw Coventry United fighting for the Division 1 title with the likes of Bromsgrove Sporting, Lichfield, and Nuneaton Griff.

2016

In March 2016, Edwin Greaves left the club and was replaced on an interim basis by Terry Anderson, along with his assistant, Luke Morton. Under Terry's stewardship, United began a run to win their final 11 matches, conceding just 3 goals along the way. Consequently, they beat their competition to the title. Afterwards, Terry and Luke's roles were secured on a permanent basis. Following a flurry of promotions, Coventry settled into the MFL Premier Division.

2017

Following stints at The Cage (Alan Higgs Centre) and Sphinx Drive, the summer of 2017 saw United move into their new home, the Butts Park Arena.

2020

The club was bought from the original owners by Coventry-based businessman Joe Haggarty. After 5 seasons in the MFL Premier Division and finishing as Coventry's highest ranked non-league club for 5 years in a row, the restructuring of the nonleague pyramid saw Coventry United placed in the United Counties League Premier Division South. Following the departure of Terry Anderson in November 2021, the Red and Greens hired manager, Russell Dodds, and assistant manager, Darren Acton. They resigned from their roles due to personal reasons several weeks later.

Opponent Spotlight

Coventry United

2022

In February 2022, Joe Haggarty resigned as chairman and manager of Coventry United Football Club, with Ivor Lawton taking charge of first team responsibilities. Long term club supporter Nigel Ward took over the club in March 2022. Nigel's efforts to make up for lost time and money over the summer, along with the hardworking officials and volunteers, put the club in a much stronger position, both on and off the field, than during the closing months of the 2021/22 campaign. With his job to stabilize the club completed, Nigel stepped aside and was replaced as chairman by local businessman, Michael Kavanagh, with John Goodman appointed as Vice Chairman. In the summer of 2022, Carl Nolan took over as Team Manager.

Coventry United currently play their home games at The Butts Park Arena in Coventry.

Butts Park Arena is a multi-use sports stadium in Spon End, Coventry, England. Its main use is as a rugby stadium. It is the home ground for Coventry R.F.C. It was also formerly the home ground of the Coventry Jets, an American football team. From the 2017–18 season, the stadium is also the home of Coventry United, a non-league football club.

The stadium was built in 2004 and currently has one stand, known for sponsorship reasons as the XL Motors stand, which has a capacity of 3,000 and includes a number of conference and banqueting facilities. The West Stand which was a temporary structure holding 1,000 was removed at the end of the 2005–06 season on grounds of health and safety. There is also standing space for up to 1,000 supporters around the pitch.

In June 2019 the pitch was replaced with an artificial playing surface.
