Southern League Premier Division Semi-Final Play-Off match 29/April/2015
A magnificent penalty kick save by Paul (the cat) Bastock and a single goal a quarter of an hour from the end of a tense and closely contested match has left St Neots within just ninety minutes of a place in the Football Conference next season. Cheered on by around a hundred travelling supporters St Neots did themselves proud in the face of a massive challenge as they lost midfield lynch pin Mat Mitchel-King at half time to a seven inch gash in his shin that required hospitalisation having already named a side with two key players (Jack Wilkinson and Nathan Frater) still sidelined by weekend injuries. Hosts Poole at one time five points ahead at the top of the table with two games in hand were odds on favourites for automatic promotion but having lost the championship to Corby Town in their final league match they started this semi-final play off as clear favourites but fell short for the second time in four days. St Neots had to reshape their starting line up and brought in Josh Bickerstaff and Brett Longden – the latter after his one match ban – and included Lorenzo Ferrari up front for his first start since mid-February. Adam Tann also returned after injury with Sam Harty and Matt Spring both on the bench.
Poole began the better of the two sides and created two early openings with Carl Emmerson testing Paul Bastock with a well placed shot before Like Burbidge shot wildly over the bar when well placed.St Neots were finding it hard to get their passing game going and they almost fell behind after 18 minutes when a Joe Quigley header rebounded from the crossbar after clever play by Burbidge. The really significant incident of the first half came on 19 minutes when Steve Devlin was impeded by Bastock as he made for goal and the well placed Referee pointed to the penalty spot.Devlin’s well placed spot kick was perfectly anticipated by the diving keeper who pushed it away to safety. That seemed to boost St Neots’ confidence and they came more into the game as following a lengthy Mitchel-King throw after 21 minutes Lee Clark glanced his header wide of the far post and then a minute later from a Drew Roberts corner Mitchel-King won the ball in the air but home keeper Nick Hutchings saved well. Towards half time play became scrappy with Lewis Lindsay volleying Poole’s best chance over the bar from a Devlin corner and Drew Roberts working hard in an unfamiliar role wide on the right testing Hutchings with a long volley.
Mat Mitchel-King failed to appear after the break along with Josh Bickerstaff and they were replaced by a new midfield pairing of Sam Harty and Matt Spring. Clarke headed over the bar from a Lewis Hilliard cross and then saw a second effort deflected but Poole were still dangerous on the break and a Harrison Gilkes shot was blocked after good work by Quigley. A series of further substitutions by both sides seemed to break up the rhythm of play but St Neots were now looking the better side and fifteen minutes from time the all important goal arrived. Long throws have been a feature of St Neots’ attacking play recently but with the two best exponents of the art not on the field a long effort by Tom Ward was flicked on at the near post by skipper Ryan Frater and Lee Clarke headed in to break the deadlock. Poole now threw everything forward but with Ward and Frater supreme at the back they never managed a significant shot on goal in the remaining time. In fact St Neots might have finished with a more impressive final score line in their favour because with home goalkeeper Hutchings too far off his line in time added Lewis Hilliard produced an audacious shot from fifty yards that went over the keeper’s head but rebounded to safety off the top of the crossbar. So the patched up St Neots squad are now off to Truro on Bank Holiday Monday for the final showdown with Conference football the prize for the winners.

OUR FINAL
We visited Oadby for our first meeting with our visitors this season last October returning with all three points after a 3-0 victory, thanks to goals from Kieran Barnes, Rhys Thorpe and Connor Furlong, and today Oadby are at St Neots for only the second time for their final match of the season having secured a point from a 22 draw on their last visit. They had to relocate because of a ground dispute and now play in Leicester at the Riverside Football Ground. At the time these notes were penned they stood eighteenth in the league table and were facing the likelihood of relegation – a decision to be made by the Football Association at the end of the season. However, with only nineteen teams in the division (due to the demise of Cogenhoe in the last close season) a reprieve could be a possible outcome. Our visitors have had a difficult season starting on the first day when their pitch was unfit for play when we arrived in Leicester back on 27 July last year for our originally dated visit.Since that inauspicious start Oadby rose to ninth in the league table but by 14 September they were at the bottom of the table and were rooted there until the end of October when an away win at Easington took them above Godmanchester. Since then, those two clubs have been unable to get out of the likely relegation zone despite Oadby having won a further five matches. In National competition Oadby were beaten in the Extra Preliminary Round away at Grimsby Borough and three weeks later at home by Radford FC into this seasons’ venture into the FA Vase. In the League Cup Retford United inflicted on them a 7-0 home defeat and to complete a quartet of cup defeats they were eliminated from the Leicestershire and Rutland Cup 0-3 at home by Shepshed Dynamo FC. However, if they are relegated it will be an opportunity to regroup and bounce back to Step Five and we wish them well if this proves to be the case.

St Neots Town edged themselves to within touching distance of the league title with a solid, if unspectacular performance against playoff hopefuls Daventry Town at the Premier Plus Stadium in what was a tense game of few real chances and was settled by one moment of class when Mike Amaeshike headed what was to be the winning goal upon the hour mark. Manager Cameron Mawer had the luxury of naming an unchanged starting eleven once again after Sam Willis recovered from his knock picked up in Tuesday evening’s Senior Cup Final win over St Ives and Danny Baulk returned to the squad after missing the last two games through injury.
Saints got the game underway, kicking into what was a stiff wind and this was going to become a thorn in the home team’s side during the first period as they were to struggle to reproduce the levels they reached on Tuesday evening when they played slick, controlled football on the deck. In fact, whilst looking defensively solid and in control, they never really threatened Patching in the visiting goal with any chances of note. It was Daventry who managed to create the best chances of the first half with Hoeness having an early chance in the third minute and more notably in the forty-second minute skipper Rob Parker had to be alert and clear off the line when the visitors almost took the lead from a corner. Daventry picked up two early yellow cards when Price was cautioned in the sixth minute for pulling Harvey Williams back and he was followed into the referee’s note book by Rinaldi in the twelfth minute following a late challenge on Connor Furlong.
The second half began with no changes made by either side and the visitors continued to rack up the bookings in the opening exchanges with skipper Jack Ashton and Rhys Hoeness joining their compatriots in the black book, the latter for alleged assimilation on the box when it looked like he had been caught and a penalty kick would be the resultant outcome. The allimportant goal was to arrive on the hour and what a goal it was too. A Sam Willis free kick wide out on the left flank was delivered to the near post and was met by the inrushing Michael Amaeshike who managed to get infront of his marker and head home past the flailing arms of Patching.
DAVENTRY TOWN (H)
29-03-2025
Kieran Barnes was to go close to extending the lead on two occasions, firstly in the 64th minute when he frustratingly fired over the bar when well placed and five minutes later when he forced the save of the day from Patching when he unleashed a sweet strike from the edge of the area and the visiting custodian got a strong hand to the ball and somehow divert the ball over the crossbar for a corner. A raft of changes for the visitors was to follow with two forward players entering the frey and this signalled their attacking intent as they looked to get back into the game and salvage their faltering play off hopes and after a continued bombardment of the home box from Lewis Burgess’s ridiculously long throw ins, Murphy Culkin had to be smart at the far post to make an amazing clearance from off the line when it looked like the equalising goal was about to nestle in the net.
So, this hard fought victory leave Cameron Mawer’s men needing just two points from their remaining four games to make sure of the league title and a return to Step Four football.

RUGBY BOROUGH (A)
05-04-2025
After just their second season back at Step Five St Neots Town will be promoted back to the next level as United Counties League Premier Division South champions. They achieved their target with three matches to spare, away at third placed Rugby Borough with a sparkling haul of four goals after falling behind early in the match. The spectacle was spoilt by a strong gusting wind that made their usual style of neat passing impossible but they persevered to recover from the shock of conceding an early penalty goal to score twice in the final quarter of an hour to give them the solid final scoreline their play had deserved. The home side battled well and only two outstanding saves from St Neots’ man of the match goalkeeper James Goff cemented this important result. Manager Cameron Mawer was able once again to name an unchanged line-up and this solidity has been a feature of the sides’ eleven match winning run. Roared on by around one Hundred travelling supporters, St Neots finished strongly and will look forward to being presented with the league trophy at their next home match on Easter Saturday.
That early shock of conceding a penalty after just five minutes that was confidently tucked away by Daniel Fraser will have galvanised the visitors resolve who set about repairing the damage. Furlong, lively on the right flank, produced a searing shot that passed just beyond the far post and then at the other end James Goff had to race out of his area to clear when his defence had been breached. Joining his attack, Sam Willis cut in to see his net bound shot blocked by a defender and then after 21 minutes Harvey Williams was upended in the penalty area, but St Neots’ appeals were waved away when the Referee spotted a late offside flag. The visitors were now having the better of the play and Rhys Thorpe twice cut into the penalty area –the second time to be brought down by a defender. For the second time in the game the Referee pointed to the penalty spot and Sam Willis stepped up to confidently level the scores after 37 minutes to the delight of the travelling supporters. Williams was again brought down in the area but once again the offside flag saved the home side and then three minutes before the break St Neots struck a significant blow when leading scorer Rhys Thorpe burst through the home defence with a burst of speed and when his first effort rebounded from the advancing keeper’s body, it fell kindly for the St Neots striker who was able to walk the ball into the net to put his side in front. On the balance of play this was well deserved.
RUGBY BOROUGH (A)

Two minutes after the restart Goff had to be at his best to dive full length to turn a shot from Thabang Dube around a post but St Neots were quickly back in the ascendancy with Williams firing over the bar, and Kieran Barnes seeing his effort pass the wrong side of a goalpost. An off balance Thorpe managed to send a closerange header high over the bar as St Neots dominated the attacking play, and then after 70 minutes Goff again came to his sides’ rescue when substitute Shad Riza went past two defenders to send a low shot just inside the far post. Rugby now stepped up their attacking and another fine Goff save from Antonio Cristofaro kept St Neots ahead. Then, in the final fifteen minutes, as the home side appeared to tire St Neots took full advantage. After 78 minutes Rhys Thorpe again used his speed to breach the home defence to make the score 3-1 and five minutes later from a Murphy Culkin free kick, Charlie Bowen rose above the home defence to claim St Neots fourth goal and snuff out the home team’s resistance. At the final whistle the side celebrated with the enthusiastic travelling support.

St Neots gave their supporters a bit of a shock at Barwell (the home of Hinckley AFC). After totally bossing the first half in which they dominated and created (and missed) a hat full of excellent chances they conceded a goal after 53 minutes to go behind for the first time since 1st March but then recovered to equalise two minutes later and go on score two more goals to continue their winning run. It was a special day for striker Rhys Thorpe who opened St Neots account to claim his thirtieth goal of the season – the first player since 2015 to achieve this milestone. With skipper Robbie Parker unavailable and Connor Furlong unwell Manager Cameron Mawer had to make enforced team changes, and he rested Kieran Barnes bringing in Nathan George in defence and Danny Baulk and Cole Butler in a reshaped attack.
The first half was a revelation for the supporters but incredibly failed to produce a goal. For the opening 25 minutes St Neots totally dominated play creating countless chances that either went begging or were saved by inspired home keeper Keelan Fallows. Time and again he was in the right place and when his goal should have been breached St Neots finishing was wayward. In St Neots first attack after two minutes newcomers to the team both Danny Baulk and Cole Butler saw net-bound efforts blocked by defenders and then Fallows produced a stunning full length save to deny Rhys Thorpe from a Baulk cross. Baulk then shot wide after going clear of the defence, and then Butler shot wide after seeing another effort well saved. Harvey Williams was terrorising his marker, and he shot wide and then saw Fallows save and then a Murphy Culkin effort was headed off the line by Chandler Pegg.
After half an hour St Neots keeper James Goff was in action for the first time saving from Hinckley’s first shot on target by Jared Bradshaw. The half ended with Fallows twice saving well to deny Baulk and Thorpe.
After the break the home side adopted a more attacking approach and were rewarded after just five minutes when from a corner Brian Kolyrelon forced the ball home from close range. It took St Neots just two minutes to get over the shock and claim an equaliser when Rhys Thorpe headed home a Sam Willis cross in a swift response. St Neots then brought on substitute Kieran Barnes who was quickly in the thick of the action. He set up Amaeshike to force a good save from Fallows and then after 67 minutes the lively Williams was upended in the penalty area and a spot kick awarded. The usually reliable Sam Willis saw his effort pushed away by the inspired goalkeeper but ten minutes later as the home side appeared to tire and after their keeper had again saved well from Barnes, Mike Amaeshike followed up to give St Neots the lead with 23 minutes left.
HINCKLEY AFC (A) 12-04-2025
A Barnes shot hit the post and a Williams effort was a foot wide but the icing on the cake came four minutes into added time when substitute Shane Fox was put clear of the defence to add the third goal.St Neots now look forward to receiving trophy and medals at their last home game with GNG Oadby Town on Easter Saturday.

The exact year of formation is unsure but it is believed to be either 1937 or 1939 under the guise of Oadby Imperial. The club did not have to wait long for their first honours winning the “City Medals” competition in the 1939–40 season. Around 1943 the club merged with a local junior side to become Oadby United, two years later in 1949 they reverted to original name of Oadby Imperial which coincided being accepted into the Leicestershire Senior League Division 2 for the 1949–50 season. The first season saw the club finish in 11th place out of 16. In 1951 Oadby Imperial changed their name to become Oadby Town FC.
In the same year they won the Leicestershire Senior LeagueDivision Two Championship and were promoted to Division One (later Division One became the Premier League and Division Two became Division OThe 1956–57 season saw the club finish as runners-up in the Leicestershire Senior League to Leicester City ‘A’ and also were runners-up to Whitwick Colliery in the Coalville Charity Cup. It wasn’t until 1963 that the club won its first major honours winning the Leicestershire Senior Cup for the first time beating Newfoundpool WMC in the final. The following season saw three pieces of silverware collected. As well as retaining their Leicestershire Senior Cup crown, Oadby also were Leicestershire Senior League champions for the first time and won the Coalville Charity Cup for a second time. It was to be a further four years (1967–68) for Oadby to regain the Senior League crown and for good measure they retained their Senior League title the following year and also added the Leicestershire Challenge and Rolleston Charity Cups. A fourth Senior League crown was achieved in the 1972–73 season. This was to be the last league title for over twenty years as it was not until the 1994–95 season that they regained the title. Titles six, seven and eight came in three consecutive years between 1997 and 1999, the latter resulting in promotion to the Midland Football Alliance Oadby Town have won the Leicestershire Senior League eight times and been runners-up seven times.
In the 1999–2000 season they joined the Midland Football Alliance, and in their first season in this league they were crowned champions. In the 2002–03 season Oadby Town were FA Vase semi-finalists, losing out to Brigg Town 3–1 on aggregate. The 2004–05 season saw the club win their first Leicestershire Challenge Cup crown for over 30 years and 3rd in total, beating fellow Midland Alliance side Barwell 2–1 at the Walkers Stadium in Leicester.
The 2006-07 season saw Oadby enter the Rolleston Charity Cup for the first time in nine years and winning the competition for a ninth time beating Barwell 2–1 in the final at Holmes Park. The following season saw Oadby retain the Rolleston Charity Cup beating favourites Hinckley United 4–1 in the final. On top of that they won the Leicestershire Challenge Cup for the fourth time beating Friar Lane & Epworth 3–0 at the Walkers Stadium. In 2010–11 Oadby Town finished 22nd in the Midland Football Alliance and were relegated to the East Midlands Counties League.
Lee Harriman, former Coalville Town chief, was appointed manager for the 2011–12 season. Oadby managed a successful season with a decent run in the FA Vase, being the only team from below Step 5 to reach the 5th Round, losing to Staveley Miners Welfare.
Oadby Town moved across to the United Counties League Division One (Step 6) for the 2012–13 season. Turbulent times followed over a few seasons with various management changes and inevitable financial pressures forcing the committee to regrettably resign the club from the United Counties League towards the end of last season due to unsustainable financial pressures. The club was fortunately reinstated without hesitation or fear of further stresses and strains by a fresh consortium with some existing staff and players. A fresh new management team and board stepped in who are all enthusiastic and committed to help sustain the clubs 80 year history and add strength , stability and who knows maybe some success. For this historic Leicestershire football club , The new management , The players and The fantastic supporters….old and new. Welcome to the future.
