BLAST FROM THE PAST
Buildbase FA Trophy First Round Qualifying -
A see-saw Victory
BEDWORTH UNITED 2 ST NEOTS TOWN 3
Two incidents in this match seemed to contribute to a result in St Neots favour in their debut in this season’s FA Trophy. In virtually the final action of the first half they were awarded a controversial penalty which saw them claw back to level terms at the break and then the issue of a red card to a home defender midway through the second half seemed to break the spirit of the hosts. Twice behind St Neots showed real character to pull back before claiming a late winner just eight minutes from time. Without injured skipper Tom Ward with Tom Wood replacing him in defence, St Neots fielded an entirely changed eleven from the side that had beaten Bedworth in the corresponding round of this competition last season at the Premier Plus Stadium. Bedworth are members of the Southern section of the Northern Premier League and it is a venue that St Neots seem to relish because this was their fourth victory on the ground in as many visits. Bedworth have a 3G surface and it produced some swift flowing football from both sides with St Neots running our worthy winners as they picked up the £2,700 from the prize fund.
It was Bedworth who made the better start forging into the lead with a goal after just 55 seconds in the first real action of the match. Goalkeeper Alex Archer came out towards the edge of his penalty area to challenge for a high cross but seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball only managing to knock it down to Justin Marsden who was left with the simple task of sliding the ball into the unguarded net. The home side then bombarded the St Neots goal with a series of long ball attacks testing the nerve of the goalkeeper who responded by making a smart save from Lee Moore. Luke Rowe sent a free kick over the bar but gradually St Neots regained their poise and acting skipper Micky Hyem won a free kick taken by Declan Rogers who found the head of Taylor Parr but former Coventry City defender Iyseden Christie cleared off the line. After 13 minutes the scores were levelled when from a Miles Smith cross James Hall showed fine control to send a shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net. Jordan Archer then missed a great chance to restore the lead when unmarked at the far post. but his free header was too high. Eight minutes before the break Bedworth went in front again when Parr seemed to mistime his challenge,c and the ball ran loose for Daniel Creaney to rap a low shot under the diving body of Archer. It looked like a half time lead for the hosts but three minutes into time added Sam Mulready was impeded in the penalty area by Christie and from the resultant spot kick James Hall levelled the scores with his ninth goal of the campaign.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
SJordan Archer had an early second half chance to score for Bedworth from a long throw by Luke Rowe but once again his effort was off target. The match seemed to go off the boil with lots of midfield exchanges leading to few clear chances although Peter Clark did bring a good save from James Martin after good approach work by Declan Rogers. After 69 minutes a long cross field pass from Smith found Mulready wide right and as he attempted to go past Richard Bryan the defender appeared to kick him to earn a straight red card. For a while Bedworth seemed to concentrate on defence unable to make any headway against a St Neots defence that was growing in confidence. With just eight minutes left a Hyem shot following a Rogers free kick was blocked by a defender and the ball fell at the feet of Taylor Parr who claimed his first cup goal for St Neots. Both Clark and James Hall then saw shots blocked with Bedworth unable to offer any real chance of a late levelling goal and a replay.
Footnote: St Neots Reserves made it a Cup double on the day by defeating neighbour’s Eynesbury Rovers Reserves in the second round of the Hunts Intermediate Cup. They now travel to AFC Stanground Sports in the quarter-final.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR VISITORS AYLESTONE PARK – THE CURRENT LEAGUE LEADERS
Aylestone Park were the surprise package in the UCL Premier Division South last season. Promoted as champions of Division One two seasons ago they made a cautious start in their new surrounding losing five of their first 14 league matches but went on to earn a place in the end of season play-offs.Like St Neots they failed to navigate the play offs but this season they have come back stronger than ever and have led the way with a string of consistent results. When our two sides met in Leicester at the end of October Aylestone had a rare off day as our lads returned home with all three points from a 2-0 victory so today could be pay back day with our guests determined to reverse that result. However, at this midway stage in the season it will be consistency in the remainder of the season that will determine the fortunes of our two sides come the end of April.
In cup competition Aylestone have had mixed fortunes. In the FA Cup they were beaten 2-0 at home by Wellingborough Town whilst in the FA Vase they won comfortably ‘over the fence’ at Leicester Nirvana before featuring in an unbelievable tussle at home to Clay Cross Town that finished 6-6 before the visitors won a penalty shoot-out by four goals to three. More drama was to follow in the Sports Ground Development league Cup where another penalty shoot-out was their downfall when they lost 5-4 to visiting Newark and Sherwood after a 1-1 draw. However in the Leicestershire and Rutland Challenge Cup it was third time lucky with a successful 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Ashby Ivanhoe after another 1-1 draw and they followed that up with a 3-1 home victory over Leicester Nirvana.

GCE HIRE PLANT UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH
ST NEOTS TOWN 6 LEICESTER NIRVANA 0
After a convincing second half display that saw St Neots plunder five goals –including three in a fifteen minutes’ spell just after half time – Cameron Mawer’s side became league table toppers for the first time since the 2011/12 season. Leaders Aylestone Park were inactive after a waterlogged pitch prevented their trip to Easington Sports and St Neots took full advantage. After a tepid first half when they were defending their goal against a strong wind and driving rain, the home side produced some sparkling attacking second half play to crush a fragile visiting defence and score almost at will. The visitors showed some determination in the first half but had nothing to show for their efforts after the break as St Neots recorded their second league double of the season in confident style. Danny Baulk was drafted into the side when Harvey Williams failed a pre-match fitness test, and he grasped his chance impressively scoring twice after the break to deservedly earn the man of the match award. The side showed just one other change from the previous match with skipper Rob Parker serving a one match ban. Into his place recent signing James Sage moved into defence alongside Charlie Bowen with Murphy Culkin returning at left full back.
Conditions dictated play in the first half with the visiting side having the wind and rain behind them and they took full advantage of possession in the early stages of the match. However, apart from one effort by the lively Eraid Memaj after eleven minutes, the home goal was rarely threatened with the defensive partnership of Charlie Bowen and James Sage mopping up the better openings created by the visiting side and Bowen even found time to join the attack to head wide from a Kieran Barnes free kick. Then, after 25 minutes, Rhys Thorpe produced a burst of speed to pick up a Barnes free kick and score after going clear of the visiting defence. When the speedy Connor Furlong was upended, Barnes sent his dipping free kick narrowly wide and then at the other end Memaj once again threatened but saw his effort pass wide of the far post. Two more St Neots efforts followed with a Furlong effort deflected for a corner from which Sage headed wide of target.
John Walker's Match Report
LEICESTER NIRVANA (H)
23-11-2024
The second half saw a much more positive approach by the home side. A Barnes effort was only just wide from a Baulk low cross, and Furlong wastefully shot over the bar after a mis-hit clearance. Then after 55 minutes a Rhys Thorpe effort rattled the woodwork and Danny Baulk followed up to knock in the rebound to make the score 2-0. Five minutes later after the unfortunate Thorpe had seen a second effort rebound from the bar the lively Furlong went down the right to set up full back Sam Willis for his seventh goal of the season to make it 3-0 on the hour and ten minutes later Connor Furlong was rewarded with St Neots fourth goal with a sizzling 30 yards effort following an uncleared corner kick.
St Neots were now cruising towards an inevitable victory and their fifth goal came seven minutes from time when Danny Baulk, set up by Barnes, produced a crisp finish for his second of the match. The sixth goal that took them top the top of the table came on the stroke of full time from substitute Dammy Nickels with a neat finish past the stranded keeper.

POTTON UNITED (H) 10-12-2024
ST NEOTS TOWN 0 POTTON UNITED 0
(St Neots won 4-3 on penalties)
In a very undistinguished Hinchingbrooke Cup local derby St Neots squeezed past Potton to the semi-finals with a penalty shoot-out. Neither side were at their best and although both goalkeepers made important saves there was little to commend this midweek tie, with a trip to March Town awaiting the winners. There was little rhythm to a match in which there were too many hopeful forward passes leaving the defences of both team’s time and space to mop up any potential threats. Both had good spells of possession but lacked penetration and Potton had to play the last fifteen minutes with ten men after former Saint Jordan Brown picked up a straight red card for verbal abuse. Both sides paraded former players from their opposition camps but St Neots without the unavailable Charlie Bowen and Kieran Barnes brought in Christian Tavernier and Dammy Nickels.
In the first twenty minutes there was little of note although a poor clearance by visiting keeper James Hoskins handed Sam Willis an opening, but he shot wide, and at the other end Cole Butler squandered the visitors’ best chance shooting well wide. Playing in an unaccustomed forward role Willis ran at the visiting defence but saw his shot blocked and then midway through the first half Jordan Brown was driven wide but still produced a shot that rebounded from a goalpost. Hoskins did well to get behind a low shot from Michael Amaeshike, but then former Saint Charlie Clark found his way into the referee’s notebook for a clumsy challenge on Rhys Thorpe. Just before the break Willis shot wide for St Neots and at the other end another Jordan Brown effort was blocked.

POTTON UNITED (H) 10-12-2024
There were early second half substitutions by both sides in a bid to break the deadlock and one of St Neots replacement players Harvey Williams tested the visiting keeper with a snap-shot that was pushed over the bar. The same player inserting pace into the home attack saw a second effort saved but midway through the half home keeper James Goff had to save at full length from Butler who had worked his way in from the flank. The lively Emmanual Gbejuade was looking like the visiting player most likely to break the deadlock, but he was twice off target and then fifteen minutes from time Jordan Brown picked up that straight red card to leave the visitors a man short. St Neots tried to capitalise but both Willis and Williams were off target with their finish and Hoskins saved well from St Neots substitute James Hatch. Amaeshike had a late effort well saved and so the game was decided from the penalty spot. Willis, Murphy Culkin, Williams and Robbie Parker all scored for the home side but James Goff saved efforts by Gbejuade and Butler so St Neots eased through to a second Hinchingbrooke Cup visit to March in successive seasons.
St Neots Town: Goff, Nickels, Culkin, Tavernier, Parker, Sage, Furlong, Amaeshike, Thorpe, Willis, Baulk

PLAYING RECORD
SEASON
7 8 9 10 11
Opponent Spotlight Aylestone Park
Aylestone Park Senior Section was formed way back in 1980 and at that point it was a natural progression from youth team football where we were very successful at local level.
Our early years saw us develop from Sunday morning adult football in the Charnwood League to our first taste of Saturday football courtesy of the Leicester & District League where we were very successful, gaining many league honours and various County F.A Cup successes.
Without doubt this was a very vibrant time for the club and on the back of our previous achievements we were eventually accepted into the Leicestershire Senior League which was not only a major step up in playing standards but also level of facility. Floodlights, a spectator stand and post and rail pitch were standard requirements back then in the late 80’s and without doubt Leicestershire football was at a very good level, with the likes of Shepshed Charterhouse, Quorn, Coalville Town, Barwell, Friar Lane Old Boys to name but a few - all making for some very attractive fixtures.
Although ‘The Park’ thoroughly enjoyed their many years of Senior League membership, it became clear that the established clubs were looking to make progress and pursue pastures new. This ‘progression’ wasn’t lost on us and following our recent re-location to our new facilities in 2010 we finally enjoyed our best season to date in 2011-12, gaining promotion to the East Midlands Counties League which provides football at Step 6 on the National Football Pyramid System.
The season 2012/2013 was a beneficial one when APFC beat Ashby Ivanhoe 3-1 to lift the Senior Cup and the following season we were invited into the East Midlands Counties League following an 11th hour resignation from one of its member clubs, needless to say, we duly accepted the offer.
Season 2018/19 saw another milestone in the history of the club. The Leagues Committee that operates from the National Wembley Stadium decided to alter all step 5 and 6 Leagues in an effort to ease travelling time and also revert to 20 team constitutions. This re-organisation saw us relocated ‘sideways’ to the United Counties League. This also coincided with our highly successful youth team manager Matt Wormleighton stepping up to the plate to manage first team business. Matt’s loyalty, enthusiasm and dedication was there for all to see and he was ably assisted by other club stalwarts, Adam Hart and Kev Matthews plus the experience of Jason Genders and Tom Orton who completed the management team.
Opponent Spotlight Aylestone Park
In July 2021 Bob Stretton, one of the founder members of the club, retired from the role of Chairman from the club. Without Bob’s vision, determination and ingenuity the club would not even exist and would certainly not be in the positive position it is now. John Greaves, a former player for the club, was elected as the new Chairman and has been hugely instrumental in continuing to deliver further progress to the club. Indeed, since his tenure, a new 500-seater grandstand complete with accessible and standing areas has been installed, a new 6M x 3M digital scoreboard is in evidence, a new post and rail system now surrounds pitches 1 & 2, a new sports bar was opened in June and a complete refurbishment of the changing rooms was completed prior to season 2021/2022.
Season 2022/2023, saw a change in the management/coaching team with Matt Wormleighton stepping down after 4 years in the role as 1st team manager to undertake a new role at the club. Josh Dixon was appointed as first team manager and he was joined by Kade Lewis, as assistant manager, Liam Smith as coach and Martin Milnes is the goalkeeper’s coach. Dean Wright is the club’s physio and Kev Matthews continues in his role as kitman. With the introduction of several new players and a different style of football the club won the UCL Division 1 title by 6 points and were top of the league throughout the season after the opening round of matches.
The end of October 2023 saw a change in the management structure and James Dodd became 1st team manager and Elliot Shilliam was appointed as assistant manager with Matt Coates, Michael Milnes, Kev Matthews and Dean Wright all supporting James in their respective roles. Further changes occurred for the beginning of season 2024/2025 with Matt, Dean and Kev all leaving the club with Jake Duffy taking the role of player/coach, Michael extending his role to include the kitman’s duties and Beth Roberts joined the club as physiotherapist.
On a broader scale, Aylestone Park F.C provides football in the local community for not only adult football but also a wide range of age group sections i.e. mini-soccer, junior, youth and ladies football plus an inclusive section for youngsters with learning difficulties. It is this vision of how we see the whole footballing picture and what is required in our community that has enabled us to be assisted by various grant aid in addition to our own dedicated fundraising efforts that have given us an outstanding, first-class facility, most notably a ‘state of the art’ 3G pitch complete with floodlights and a 100-seater covered stand. Aylestone Park has made a massive effort in providing the very best for its players, supporters and club members and equally important its visitors from other clubs.
