“Good afternoon Everyone and welcome for the 1st of 2 very important home fixtures for the Saints.”.
Christmas time is always a very busy time for all and especially here at the Saints as we have a busy run up to Christmas with so many important games ahead. We are pleased to offer a very warm welcome today to all the Players , officials and supporters of Northampton Sileby Rangers. When we visited our visitors earlier this season they proved a very tough Nut to crack and it took a big second half performance to make a breakthrough and secure a very hard fought victory , so we are under no illusion what a competitive game we are expecting this afternoon.
Cameron and the boys have done the Club proud with an incredible run of top class and sometimes gritty performances to push forward into a fantastic position to challenge the best in our competitive league this season. So after last weeks narrow away defeat to a very good Coventry Utd team , We find ourselves starting a new challenge this week, to build on the fine recent performances and and kick start another unbeaten run and maintain our challenge.
So with your incredible support behind Cameron and the team, let’s wish the team every success for today and this very busy period and hopefully secure more valuable points to maintain our challenge at the top.
Look forward to catching up with you all at some point in the near future.
COME ON YOU SAINTS

SAINTS COME GOOD SECOND HALF (12th October 2024)
SILEBY RANGERS 0 ST NEOTS TOWN 3
This was St Neots first visit to Fernie Fields for 30 years having been beaten 4-1 in the League KO Cup on their last visit in October 1996, so this was appropriate revenge. The result extended St Neots’ current winning run to four matches and cemented their position in the play-off places in the league table four points behind leaders Aylestone Park but with a match in hand. Manager Cameron Mawer named an unchanged line-up for the first time since early August but made two second half substitutions. Sileby were a side in form having won three and drawn two of their last six league matches and St Neots had to be at their best after the break to return home with all three points. They also had man-of-the-match goalkeeper James Goff to thank for some vital saves both before they had scored and whilst they boasted only a one goal advantage over their hosts.
The first half was a cagey affair with both sides able to produce some impressive possession football without serious testing the opposition goalkeeper. In the first twenty minutes there were only two serious attempts on goal – Rob Parker releasing Rhys Thorpe on goal, but home keeper Dean Love saved well, and a longrange effort by Harvey Williams that flew wide. Gradually the contest opened-up with home striker Kenzie Cross testing James Goff, and at the other end Love was again in action bravely saving at the feet of Williams. A three-man St Neots move ended with Thorpe just off target, and Connor Furlong tested the home keeper after neat work by Mike Amaeshike. The tireless Thorpe shot across the face of goal after being played clear and the half ended with Sileby striker Nathan Burrows seeing his shot rebound from a post to be cleared.
The second half began with the home side on the offensive and St Neots had to funnel back and defend. Goff saved bravely at the feet of Lamin Jammeh and a searching cross by Josh Drain was cleared off the St Neots goal line. Another important save by Goff heralded a change in the pattern of play as the visitors began once again to string together their passes. On the hour an incisive break forward saw Kieran Barnes break down the left before pulling the ball back for Connor Furlong to thunder his shot past the home keeper to give St Neots the lead.Sileby replied with Burrows testing Goff and then the keeper kept the visitors ahead with a full length save to deny Drain.
BLAST FROM THE PAST
SA St Neots sent on Sam Willis for Williams and created several promising openings thwarted only by the offside flag. However, in the last ten minutes St Neots took full advantage as the host side appeared to flag. Hard-working Rhys Thorpe eventually slipped the offside trap collecting a lengthy clearance to add the second goal and the icing on the cake for the visitors came in the final minute when substitute Sam Willis was set up by Amaeshike for St Neots’ third goal.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR VISITORS NORTHAMPTON SILEBY RANGERS
This is to be Sileby’s first visit to St Neots Town FC since the 1994/95 season (yes 30 years ago!) when we were both members of the lower division of the United Counties League and Northampton Sileby were known as Northampton Vanaid. Of course, that means it is their first visit to the Premier Plus Stadium because their last visit to Town was to our original Loves Farm ground. In that memorable season – our first back at Senior level after moving to out new ground – we beat Vanaid 3-2 at home and 5-2 away in the league but in between those two matches we went to Northampton in the League Cup and were convincingly beaten 4-1 with Mike Phelan getting our consolation goal. Six former players featured on the scoresheet of our league victories in that first season and for the benefit of the historians reading this they were Steve Galbraith, Steve Brown, Paul Scott, David Albone, Andy Meeks, and Grant Ager.
However, now back to the current Sileby Rangers. Our two sides met in our first league meeting this season at Fernie Field on 12th October when our lads ran out 3-0 winners with Rhys Thorpe, Connor Furlong and Sam Willis on the scoresheet. Sileby are currently 14th in the league table with six wins and five draws in their 20 completed league matches.Away from home Sileby have won twice – at Bugbrooke and Godmanchester both of those sides below them in the league table. At home on the league they held leaders Aylestone Park to a draw and last week they equalled their best home league victory of the season when they defeated Lutterworth Town 4-1. In the FA Cup they lost in an extra-preliminary round replay away at Boston Town and in the FA Vase they were beaten at home in a penalty shoot-out by their neighbours Northampton ON Chenecks.Meantime in the League KO Cup they travelled to Newark and Sherwood but lost 2-1 and to complete a quartet of first match cup defeats they were beaten 4-1 away at higher graded Brackley Town in the Northamptonshire Hillier Senior Cup.

ST NEOTS TOWN 6 LEICESTER NIRVANA 0
After a convincing second half display that saw St Neots plunder five goals –including three in a fifteen minutes’ spell just after half time – Cameron Mawer’s side became league table toppers for the first time since the 2011/12 season. Leaders Aylestone Park were inactive after a waterlogged pitch prevented their trip to Easington Sports and St Neots took full advantage. After a tepid first half when they were defending their goal against a strong wind and driving rain, the home side produced some sparkling attacking second half play to crush a fragile visiting defence and score almost at will. The visitors showed some determination in the first half but had nothing to show for their efforts after the break as St Neots recorded their second league double of the season in confident style. Danny Baulk was drafted into the side when Harvey Williams failed a pre-match fitness test, and he grasped his chance impressively scoring twice after the break to deservedly earn the man of the match award. The side showed just one other change from the previous match with skipper Rob Parker serving a one match ban. Into his place recent signing James Sage moved into defence alongside Charlie Bowen with Murphy Culkin returning at left full back.
Conditions dictated play in the first half with the visiting side having the wind and rain behind them and they took full advantage of possession in the early stages of the match. However, apart from one effort by the lively Eraid Memaj after eleven minutes, the home goal was rarely threatened with the defensive partnership of Charlie Bowen and James Sage mopping up the better openings created by the visiting side and Bowen even found time to join the attack to head wide from a Kieran Barnes free kick. Then, after 25 minutes, Rhys Thorpe produced a burst of speed to pick up a Barnes free kick and score after going clear of the visiting defence. When the speedy Connor Furlong was upended, Barnes sent his dipping free kick narrowly wide and then at the other end Memaj once again threatened but saw his effort pass wide of the far post. Two more St Neots efforts followed with a Furlong effort deflected for a corner from which Sage headed wide of target.

The second half saw a much more positive approach by the home side. A Barnes effort was only just wide from a Baulk low cross, and Furlong wastefully shot over the bar after a mis-hit clearance. Then after 55 minutes a Rhys Thorpe effort rattled the woodwork and Danny Baulk followed up to knock in the rebound to make the score 2-0. Five minutes later after the unfortunate Thorpe had seen a second effort rebound from the bar the lively Furlong went down the right to set up full back Sam Willis for his seventh goal of the season to make it 3-0 on the hour and ten minutes later Connor Furlong was rewarded with St Neots fourth goal with a sizzling 30 yards effort following an uncleared corner kick.
St Neots were now cruising towards an inevitable victory and their fifth goal came seven minutes from time when Danny Baulk, set up by Barnes, produced a crisp finish for his second of the match. The sixth goal that took them top the top of the table came on the stroke of full time from substitute Dammy Nickels with a neat finish past the stranded keeper.

COVENTRY UNITED 2 ST NEOTS TOWN 1
Despite a brave second half performance, after conceding two goals late in the first half, St Neots left Coventry with their fourteen matches undefeated run coming to a disappointing end. Their rally after the break brought a consolation goal but they slipped off the top of the table after just a short stay of seven days with Aylestone Park regaining top spot now with a three points lead. The home side decided to protect their first half lead by concentrating on defence after the break and despite having the greater share of second half play St Neots lacked the cutting edge to take advantage. The host side are on an excellent run of form and this result stretched their record to seven games undefeated whilst the visitors tasted defeat for the first time since 21st September. There was just one team change from the previous game with skipper Robbie Parker returning to the side in place of the unavailable Christian Tavernier.
After a cagey start as the two sides sized each other up a Kieran Barnes free kick was deflected over his own crossbar by a home defender but then Coventry settled and began to dictate the attacking play. A long-range effort by Conner Mort deceived the visiting keeper but rebounded from the crossbar and at the other end Kieran Barnes burst through the home defence to be upended but the Referee waved away St Neots penalty appeals. A close-range header by Robbie Parker was comfortably gathered by home keeper Jake Bull who then saved at full stretch a testing cross from Danny Baulk. However, the home side ended the first half in impressive style. After 40 minutes a through ball found Connor Mort looking yards offside but the flag stayed down, and he advanced to comfortably beat James Goff to open the scoring.Worse was to follow for the visitors because after Rhys Thorpe had shot wide from a Barnes free kick, in added time play moved to the other end where the usually reliable Goff left his line in an attempt to field a high cross but he misjudged the flight of the ball which fell to Dylan Parker who scored into the unguarded net to give the home side a two goals advantage.

St Neots came out looking purposeful after the break with Harvey Williams replacing Danny Baulk and the home side seemed happy to sit back and protect their lead affording the visitors possession and space. However, they looked confident and assured in defence and the best the visitors could offer were long range efforts by Barnes and Michael Amaeshike comfortably fielded by the keeper. At the other end on a break Chris Cox shot over the bar when well placed but after 69 minutes St Neots sensed a comeback when Murphy Culkin scored from distance after a spell of sustained St Neots pressure to make it 2-1. The home side sought to break up any pattern in play by the visitors by introducing several substitutes and they picked up a couple of cautions as St Neots pressed. However, the only serious effort mounted by St Neots was a lengthy effort by Connor Furlong comfortably saved by Bull. As the final whistle approached substitute Harvey Williams squandered St Neots best late opening for an equaliser as the proud winning run was extinguished.

NORTHAMPTON SILEBY RANGERS
TThe club was founded in 1968 as the works team of the Sileby Engineering Company, whose main office was originally in Sileby, Leicestershire. Rangers initially played as a Sunday club and made rapid progress through the Sunday Alliance divisions, becoming one of the county’s leading clubs. Sileby won the Northants FA Sunday Cup in 1975 and were beaten finalists in 1973, 1979, 1983 and 1993.
The club branched into Saturday football in the mid eighties joining the Northampton Town League. They won back to back championships in 1989 and 1990 and were runners up in 1991 and 1993, by which time the club had changed its name to Vanaid as part of a sponsorship arrangement. The club also won the Gorell Barnes Cup and reached the Northants FA Junior Cup final in 1987, losing to the Irthlingborough Diamonds’ second string.
The introduction of the UCL Pyramid paved the way for the club to progress, and a site at Fernie Fields in Moulton was obtained and developed into a UCL standard ground. Second place in the Town League in 1993 earned Vanaid a Division One place as they became the first club to graduate from the junior pyramid.
Under the management of former Cobblers’ chairman Dick Underwood, Vanaid made a huge impact in the UCL, winning the Division One title and adding the Northants FA Junior Cup for the first time, beating ON Chenecks by the only goal at the County Ground. Vanaid also reached the Benevolent Cup final and claimed two Premier Division scalps in the Knockout Cup, but with planning permission for floodlights denied they were unable to move up to the top flight.
Vanaid won the NFA Junior Cup for a second time in 1997. Three years later the club reverted to the Sileby Rangers name, but on the field fortunes plummeted as they finished next to bottom. That downturn was a blip as, under manager Nick Verity, Sileby beat Rothwell Corinthians in successive Junior Cup finals in 2002 and 2003, winning the Division One title for a second time in the latter campaign.
The club’s long running floodlight saga finally ended in 2004 with the facility installed over the summer along with a new ground entrance. Rangers went on to win their third Division One title in manager Gary Petts’ first season in charge, heading Whitworths on goal difference.
Several disappointing league seasons followed, although in 2009/10 they narrowly lost in the Northants FA Junior Cup final, beaten 1-0 by ON Chenecks. With an eye on future promotion, the club installed an impressive new stand and terracing for the 2010/11 season.

NORTHAMPTON SILEBY RANGERS
The 2011/12 season started in a disappointing manner, the club withdrawing their Reserve team from UCL Reserve Division One and the successful Under 18s side from the Northants Senior Youth League. The remainder of the 2011/12 season proved little better, with Sileby finishing next to bottom in Division One and ending with Gary Petts’ resignation as manager.
After a title-winning season with Long Buckby in the Premier Division, the management team of Glenn Botterill and and Matthew Green joined the club, and they managed to secure promotion to the Premier Division for Sileby in their first season. Sileby claimed the Division One championship with a 3-1 away win in their final match, pipping newcomers AFC Rushden & Diamonds to the title by just two points.
However, the start to the club’s Premier Division status suffered a setback straight away, with the resignation of Glenn Botterill and his team less than three weeks before the start of the season. Scott Goodwin was appointed as his replacement but, after a promising period in September, the club was forced was part company with the new manager after only just over 3 months in charge. Daren Young took over at the beginning of December with the unenviable task of building another new squad and avoiding the threat of relegation, and managed to do so with only just over a week to spare.
2014/15 again saw Sileby at the wrong end of the UCL Premier Division for most of the season, but a third consecutive season at Step 5 was secured just one game before the end of the season. The start of the 2015/16 season saw Daren Young step down, for personal reasons, and succeeded by Lee Duffy, who acted as his assistant for much of the previous campaign. Lee’s first season in charge was again dominated by a struggle to stay clear of the relegation positions, but a strong finish in the final couple of months again ensured survival.
The 2016/17 season was by far Sileby’s best in the UCL Premier Division, with the club being the last unbeaten side in the League, and for much of the season looking as if a top three finish was possible. A run of poor results towards the end of the season saw the club finish 8th, but overall an excellent achievement.
Opponent Spotlight NORTHAMPTON SILEBY RANGERS
With Lee Duffy resigning in the close season, 2017/18 the season started with experienced player Andrew Hall taking charge, assisted by former player Nathan Marsh. However, after a string of poor results, Hill resigned after a few weeks, leaving Marsh in sole charge. With little improvement in results, the club parted company with Marsh in October, appointing the experienced Matt Clarke and Paul Brackwell. The change failed to pay dividends, with the pair failing to pick up a single win in over 5 months, leaving the club bottom of the table and relegated to Division One.
The 2018/19 season started with a new management team of Mitchell Austin, assisted by Craig Mander and Jim Freeman, with most of the previous season’s squad having been replaced. However, the resignation in February of the management team, and subsequent departure of all but one of the players, left the club with the unenviable task of finding a new management team and a full squad of players less than three months from the end of the season. Former players Marc Ansell and Marc Fisher stepped in at short notice and steered the club to safety, and they continue in charge into the new season.
Major development work at Fernie Fields, that has been taking place over the last few months of the season and over the close season, is scheduled to be completed early in the 2019/20 campaign. The work will see larger changing rooms for the players, officials and female officials, an extension to the clubhouse to allow indoor bowling, enhanced kitchen facilities, and a separate clubhouse for the small-sided and disabled sports hosted on site.
