Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match.
Today we extend a very warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of Barwell FC and we hope you all enjoy your brief stay with us here this afternoon.
Well, where do I start? It certainly has been a busy, traumatic and turbulent time here at the Club
this past few weeks with now well publicised off the pitch goings on with many of the senior players deciding to move on after the Club decided to lower the playing budget for the remainder of the season, the talk of voluntary demotion, which has now been put to bed and of course, the arrival of new manager, MARC ABBOTT, after MATT CLEMENTS moved upstairs to become our new Director of Football so it gives me great pleasure to welcome MARC and his young family to the Club and we hope your time with us is both successful and enjoyable.
As mentioned, many players have chosen to move on and we wish them well in their futures but
I’d like to personally like to thank new skipper MATT MILES, GARY WHARTON and SCOTT SINCLAIR (who is currently injured) for sticking around and adding much needed experience to MARC’s young, exciting squad. I’d also like to welcome JOE HOOD, JOE SUTTON and HARRY BECKLEY to the Club and to congratulate youngsters JACOB JOSEPH, JOE RIDER, LEON FULIANTY, OWEN DUNNETT and STEVAN SHAW for making their First Team debuts in recent weeks.
I won’t go through all our recent games here as all the match reports are elsewhere in this edition but what I will say is that although the results haven’t been too kind to us, nobody can knock the team’s effort and commitment and that is all we can ask of them, giving 100% every game and that’s what they’ve given us thus far.
I must also thank all our supporters who have continued to support us on our travels these past
few weeks, whole
as ever, it’s very much appreciated by the squad and the Club as a and may I thank you all for your ongoing support.
BE LOUD… BE PROUD… BE A SAINT
Greeny
Gaffer’s Notes… With Manager
Today we welcome Barwell FC to the Premier Plus Stadium- With Barwell currently occupying 16th place & with ourselves sitting in 20th place. We hope that all off the supporters present today enjoy their time at the game today. Firstly, I’d like to say how much I have appreciated my welcoming to St Neots Town Football Club, having been with the club for three weeks now I have been blown away with the amount of support I have received from everyone associated with the club, thank you all! The transition and handover from Matt Clements has been professional, detailed and clear which has made my introduction to The Saints a much smoother one to support the club in their ambitions to stay in the Southern League. Last Saturdays match v Stourbridge FC ended with the single goal being scored. We approached the game with a clear structure & contained a very good/ free scoring team for long spells of the game. Defensively we were excellent throughout the game in not allowing them to enter into our box on many occasions. We made things difficult for Stourbridge, coming really close to equalizing in the latter periods of the game. Our performance was professional, organised & efficient, unfortunately just lacking that final bit of quality inside the box, however myself and Matt were really pleased with the players endeavor and effort in what was a tough fixture. There were some excellent individual performers who have really matured in recent weeks, one being young Stevan Shaw who plays the game in a manner beyond his years and has really thrived off the opportunity given. Moving further up the pitch it was great to welcome Gary Wharton back into the side after the slight hamstring injury he sustained away at Needham Market a few weeks back and he worked tremendously hard for the team throughout the game- having someone of Gary’s experience will be a fantastic boost to the side as we saw Saturday. We were very pleased to have brought in 3 new players at the back end of last week- Joe Hood some may have known from his time with St Ives, Joe Sutton on loan from Histon FC and finally Harry Beckley, who has gained professional experience as well as step 2 appearances. All 3 players performed competently last week at Stourbridge FC and will add some strong qualities to the current group of players. Three other players who have experienced the 1st environment & set up over recent weeks are Jacob Joseph, Leon Fulianty and Joe Rider - all have been an absolute credit to youth section of the club over recent weeks. All of the boys’ education in the game has been accelerated for sure with their invaluable experiences so far!
We hope
you
all enjoy today’s game and really get behind the players throughout the 90 minutes.
OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT
BARWELL FC Joined League: 1992 Chairman: David Laing Website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/barwell
The Club played for the first time in the Midland Combination under the name of Barwell FC in the 1992/3 season when Barwell Athletic from the Leicestershire Senior League joined forces with Hinckley FC. Barwell became one of the founder members of the Midland Football Alliance League on its formation in 1994/95. The Sports complex with its bowling, cricket, football facilities and sports club is situated just out of the centre of the village making it an ideal venue for local residents. The facilities of the complex include a cricket pitch which was used for two Leicestershire first eleven county championship matches just after the Second World War, is a current venue for some Leicestershire second eleven and youth team matches. There is an outdoor bowling green and a magnificent indoor bowls centre complete with bar and restaurant serving a wide range of drinks and meals at prices to suit all pockets. Floodlights were installed
prior to the 1992/93 season and have been updated to comply with current FA lighting regulations. A covered stand was built prior to 1996/7 season and during the 1997/8 close season the ground was enclosed, an important step in our quest for higher status. Towards the end of 2000/01 season a new 250 seat cantilever stand was erected at Kirkby Road, and officially opened by goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on 31st July 2001 - a Barwell lad. Barwell reached the last sixteen of the FA Vase in 1995/6 their highest finish in the completion losing 3-1 away at Flixton. Other honors include the Leicestershire Senior Cup in 1996/7, the Presidents Trophy in August 1997. They have also reached the final of the Westerby Cup (played at Filbert Street and latterly the Walkers Stadium) on 3 occasions 1999/2000, 2000/01 and 2004/5 unfortunately losing all three finals to Leicester City, Hinckley Utd and Oadby Town respectively. Barwell also reached the League
Cup Final losing after extra time to Rushall Olympic. A new Manager, Bob Steel, took over the reins at Barwell in February 2004 and brought in Steve Greenhill and Ian Blyth as Assistant Managers ( with Ian also being coach). He steadied the side and instilled his way of playing into the players and is gradually getting the squad he wants. 2005/6 finally put some silverware on the shelf when Barwell won the Polymac services league cup final at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium, beating Leamington 3-1. 2006/7 saw Barwell finish in a disappointing 6th position and come runners up in both the Westerby Cup and the Rolleston Charity Cup. It was also the first season for Barwell’s Youth team who played in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League finishing a creditable 6th in the League and to round things off the reserves also finished 6th with a great run of results to finish the season. 2007/08 was a somewhat mixed season for the
Club. The first team saw two change of Manager, Bob Steel stood down in November to take on the running of the Sports Bar on the complex and his Assistant Ian Blyth took over as manager, after a run of indifferent results and the team slipping toward the bottom three the Club decided to appoint a new Manager in Marcus Law. Marcus took over the reigns in February and with a run of good result lifted the Club to a respectable mid-table finish. The Reserves had a great season, despite losing a lot of players to the first team, finishing 3rd with the Youth team finishing runners up. 2008/09 was Marcus’s first full season at the Club and he has brought in Paul O’Brien as his Assistant with Coach Lee Knibbs and Gk Coach Pat Pattinson and Physio Alan Cooke. This was The Clubs best season to date, they finished runners up in the League on 91 points and also won the Westerby Cup beating Quorn 2-0 at the Walkers Stadium. Barwell have started the new season on a high by lifting the Joe McGorrian trophy at Market Drayton by beating the home team 4-0. 2009/10 proved to be our most successful season to date. The season started well with the lads winning
the Joe McGorian Cup at 2008/09 league winners Market Drayton. After 16 season in the MFA we finally won the league and promotion to The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League. The League was won in style with the team playing 42 games winning 36 and drawing 6 with no losses and amassing a League record 114 points. They also scored 125 goals and conceded only 18. The season was also a successful one in the FA Vase where we reached the semi final losing in the last minute of the second leg to the eventual Vase winners Whitley Bay. 2010/11..again proved to be a very successful season. The season started where the last one had finished on a winning streak. In September the Manager Marcus Law left, with our best wishes, for a full time post at Kettering Town. Assistant Manager Paul O’Brien took over with Jimmy Ginnelly taking the post of Assistant Manager, unfortunately Paul had to step down due to work commitments and so he and Jimmy swapped places for our 3rd change in two months. As always with a new Manager there are comings and goings but Jimmy managed to retain most of the Squad and won the Evo Stik Division 1 South at the first attempt.
2011/12..During the closed season Barwell were put into the Evo Stik League Southern Premier Division and so for the first time were competing at level 3 . Paul O’Brien left the Club during the close season to take up a coaching position with Ex. Manager Marcus Law now at Tamworth, Martin Hier stepped up to Assistant Manager and Craig Woodley joined the Club as Coach, Rob Lawrance also came on board as GK Coach. Craig Woodley left for a job in America and Steve Anastasi came on board as coach. The team finished a creditable 9th in their first season and now look forward to improving on this in the forthcoming season. 2012/13..The Club sat in the top 5 of the League for the major part of the season but form dipped in the last couple of months and they lost out on a play off place with a draw on the last day of the season leaving Barwell in 8th position. Two or three experienced players joined at the start of the season and with a mixture of youth and experience improved on last season. 2013/14..Barwell were moved from the Southern League back to the Northern Premier League. A very difficult season lay ahead, after settling in the Southern
League they now had to get used to the ways of the North. They had a reasonable start but dipped badly during the Middle part of the season and were down in the relegation battle but they turned it round and finished in a creditable 14th position. 2014/15..In their second season back in the Northern Premier League Barwell did not make the start they hoped for and after a few weeks found themselves bottom of a very strong League. A couple of players then returned from injury/ suspension and they began to put results together and at the end of the season finished a creditable 7th=. They also had a good FA Cup & Trophy run and topped the season off when they won the Westerby Challenge Trophy at the King Power stadium beating neighbours Coalville Town 2-1 with goals from Nigel Julian & Jamie Hood. 2015/16..Finished a creditable 9th in the League after a great run in January/ February where they had 12 straight wins. They also recorded their best FA Cup run when they got to the 1st round proper losing to National League South team Welling United 2-0. Craig Woodley joined the coaching staff as fitness coach.
2016/17..A poor start to the League saw Barwell finish 14th at the end of the season. Poor FA Cup and Trophy results saw quite a disappointing season. The highlight was winning the Leicestershire Challenge Cup at The King Power Stadium beating our neighbours Coalville Town. 2017/18 Once again poor FA cup/Trophy were very disappointing, but a 9th place league position was a creditable finish. Next season sees Barwell feature in the new Southern Central Premier division with new ground to visit and less travelling over the season.
Barwell FC Squad – 2018/19 Liam Castle Castle is entering his 13th season with the club and has virtually been an everpresent at Kirkby Road under Jimmy Ginnelly, barring a few games that he has missed through injury. The goalkeeper has achieved plenty of league and cup success with the Canaries and will be hoping to replicate that this season. JEAN-RUBEN DESROSIERS Joined from carlton Town experienced centre back, also had spells at Coalville &
Loughborough Elliot Percival The former Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday defender signed for Barwell last summer and has not looked back. Percival is now one of the key players in Jimmy Ginnelly’s side and can play all across the back four as he looks to help push the team into the play-offs and maybe beyond. His fantastic attitude both on and off the pitch will set him up for a long and successful career in the game. Jai Rowe Signed from Nuneaton Borough this summer, Jai is an exciting full back and is the youngest member of our squad this season. The youngster impressed during our pre-season friendlies over the summer and the management team did not hesitate over their decision to get him signed as quickly as possible. Brad-Lee Gascoigne Gascoigne is an experienced defender, having played for several clubs, including neighbours Nuneaton Borough. The central defender is based in Mansfield but revealed over the summer that he already feels ‘the most settled he has ever been at a club’ so does not mind the travel. The central defender adopts a ‘no-nonsense’ attitude but
is also a skilled technical footballer who likes to play out when he can. Guy Hadland Manager Guy Hadland has signed player registration forms for the season ahead, in case of an injury crisis in the centre back area of the pitch. The former Nuneaton Town defender served as Jimmy Ginnelly’s assistant for several years and his knowledge and passion for football provides a huge boost to the squad and has now taken on the role of Manager
committed to the club once again. The tenacious central midfielder isn’t afraid to get stuck in and recover the ball. He can also create attacks from deep for the Barwell side.

Liam is a young centre half that we have signed from Bedworth United Under-21s this summer. The youngster is a calm and composed defender looking to get his first taste of senior football and develop as a footballer with the Canaries.
Alex has rejoined Barwell after a spell at Worcester City, speedy midfield player
Eddy Nisevic As trustworthy as nonleague left backs come, Eddy has been at Barwell for several years and is committed to the club. He is a solid 1-v-1 defender and can also create dangerous opportunities when he travels forward down the left wing. Nigel Julien Club captain Nigel celebrated his testimonial over the summer and has
Jake Warmington Former Aston Villa youngster ‘Warmy’ joined us last season and made a number of appearances towards the end of the campaign, including 90 minutes away at Shaw Lane. SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
Biggleswade Town 1 An heroic performance by the least experienced St Neots side ever to play in the Southern League fell just eight minutes short of a deserved but unexpected League point at play-off chasing hopefuls Biggleswade. The imposed austerity due to the club announcement of an immediate cutback in the budget, had seen the prompt departure of no fewer than six senior first team regulars and with three more on the injury list Manager Matt Clements had to call upon the youth team for reinforcements. As a result eight changes were made in the starting line up with no fewer than five players handed a senior league debut for the side. In all the team boasted less than a hundred St Neots senior starting lineups between them but they belied the statistics and almost recorded a totally unpredictable result. However, with more than a third of the season remaining, it was the performance on the night that was as important as the result and with Marc Abbott announced as the new Manager immediately after the match it is now an exciting new beginning for the side. The Biggleswade side were naïve, perhaps believing they only had to turn up to collect the points, but the determination and effort of the young visiting side quickly made it clear that they were going to have to work hard for the points. Significantly it was a Biggleswade substitute introduced to replace former St Neots player Dylan Williams that made the late breakthrough with the only goal of the match. Williams had the first goal effort of the game after ten minutes, but he could only find the sidenetting. St Neots replied with a Joe Rider effort comfortably handled by Saints former keeper Sam Donkin. Joe White then had the chance to open the
St Neots Town 0
scoring played clear in space by Williams, but he volleyed well wide. Another effort by White from close range was deflected by Matt Miles – the fifth player to wear the St Neots captains’ armband this season. As the game settled on the very heavy surface Rider had another effort saved but the best first half chance fell to Biggleswade’s Matt Ball after 31 minutes, whose shot was brilliantly turned over the bar by Finley Iron. Biggleswade were shading possession indicated by a growing corner count but the St Neots defence playing together for the first time were resolute and determined. From one of those corners, another former Saint, Jordan Gent won the ball in the air only to see it rebound from the crossbar to be cleared. The half ended with a St Neots breakaway attach in which Jordan Norville-Williams shot over the bar. A smart move at the start of the second half saw Ball and White combine on the left to set up Williams, but he volleyed over the bar and was shortly afterwards replaced by substitute Johnny McNamara. Another Norville-Williams effort was wide from a Scott Pollock free kick and then new skipper Matt Miles joined the St Neots attack to short narrowly over the crossbar. For a spell St Neots seemed to take the initiative with the impressive Jacob Joseph and Prince Mutswunguma both going close for St Neots but with the home side regrouping with all their substitutes utilised the visitors began to flag in the difficult conditions. Gent again used his height and strength to carve out another shooting opportunity but saw his effort fly wide and Iron saved well from White. The deciding moments came eight minutes from time when following another Biggleswade corner
Johnny McNamara forced the ball home from close range in a goalmouth scramble. It was a disappointing blow, but St Neots refused to submit and in a late show of defiance Pollock sent a lengthy effort just wide.

Tamworth

Forget the score line it was the performance that mattered, as St Neots struggle to find a semblance of normality following the midweek defection of seven senior players. As they had four days earlier, the youngsters came up trumps despite the defeat by a side with several years’ experience in the Football Conference. 5-0 sounds like a thrashing but it was far from that with two key moments that shaped the final score. Tamworth scored twice in two minutes prior to the break after the visitors had kept a clean sheet for 43 minutes, and then in a further two minutes spell in the second half experienced and much travelled striker – substitute Gregg Smith who had played for almost all the senior clubs in Lincolnshire – added two headed goals to extinguish any hopes of a St Neots come-back. The visitors never gave up and created the two last chances of the match, but luck was never on their side trying find their way through an uncompromising home defence. With three players still on the injury list St Neots named an unchanged side for the trip to Tamworth – only the fourth time in 38 games that their starting line-up has been unchanged. With new Manager Marc Abbott an interested spectator in the dug-out, he will have made his assessment of what he needs to do going forward to try to pilot his side out of the relegation zone. Tamworth man-of-the-match Chris Lait quickly made his mark on the game dribbling past three defenders to go clear in the fourth minute, but Finley Iron anticipated his shot and blocked with his legs. A minute later the same player then cut in from the left but shot over the bar and shortly afterwards Jack Concannon and Claudio Dias both shot wide of the
St Neots Town

target. St Neots first real attack after 22 minutes was halted when Kristian Green cynically upended Jordan NorvilleWilliams as he bore down on goal earning the home player an early caution. For a spell there was limited goalmouth action as St Neots seemed to get the measure of their opponents but after 35 minutes the visitors were lucky not to concede when the lively Lait set up Jordan Gough whose volley beat Iron but rebounded from the inside of a post across the goal and was cleared. Another run and shot by Norville-Williams flew wide and then after 43 minutes Jack Concannon was given too much space just inside the area and his lob beat Iron to put Tamworth ahead. In time added before the break Chris Late was somewhat fortunate to double the lead when his complete miskick fooled the defence and made it 2-0.
that they produced their best chances. Pollock shot wide and substitute Reif BissettClarke forced a good save from Singh. The other substitute Owen Dunnett had a shot blocked following a NorvilleWilliams corner and the home keeper had to dive bravely at the feet of Joe Rider to smother a cross. Smith was denied a home hat trick when Iron produced another good save, but St Neots had the last word when Bissett-Clarke cut in from the right to see Singh deny the visitors a consolation goal that they deserved.
Two efforts immediately after the break – one at each end could have shaped the outcome. First hard-working Scott Pollock brought an excellent save from home keeper Jas Singh whilst at the other end Iron produced the save of the match to deny Lait. However the home player had to wait only sixty seconds to make up for that disappointment as he rapped home from ten yards from a Joe Magunda free kick. St Neots then introduced two substitutes pushing skipper Matt Miles into midfield, but it was a Tamworth substitution that was to prove more significant. Within five minutes of joining the fray Gregg Smith picked up two goals to kill St Neots hopes, first rising high over the defence to power home a header from a Ryan Beswick corner and then stealing in unmarked at the far post to head home an accurate cross from Lait. THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION
Saffron Walden U18 1 St Neots Town U18 3 With the hosts being second from bottom in the league it appeared that St Neots might be on to a good thing here. But having seen the hosts draw 3-3 with Mildenhall here seven days earlier I knew that Saffron Walden are better than their results show. In fact, if they could believe in themselves a bit more, they could be a very useful side, next season. But this evening it took St Neots just 15 minutes to open the scoring. The ball was headed in from a free kick by goal machine Joe Rider – his 26th league and cup goal this season. Then ten minutes later the lead was doubled when Raif Bissett-
Clarke scored with another header. For the remainder of the half the visitors seemed to be in cruise control, not needing to be at their optimum best on a night which grew increasingly chilly. Meanwhile Saffron Walden were quite spirited in what they did, but in truth they offered little threat. The second half initially produced much the same. The hosts kept plugging away though, and on 67 minutes they did manage to pull a goal back when the ball was bundled home from a free kick. This goal changed both sides attitude to the match. As Walden sought to get the equalizer
so St Neots had to up their game to ensure that they got all three points and a bit of frustration crept into their play. But soon, following the euphoria of scoring, the hosts faded and towards the end St Neots looked comfortable on the ball again, culminating in them getting a fine third goal with a 20 yarder from Routs in stoppage time. Elsewhere on the night Histon picked up their first league win of the season and St Neots main rivals, Cambridge City, lost at Haverhill Rovers, who now become their biggest threat.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION
Stourbridge There is no justice in football. The youthful inexperienced St Neots side were up against second in the table Stourbridge and suffered the disappointment of conceding a third minute goal but could and should have gone on to rescue a point after an impressive fighting second half display. Home officials were quick to concede that the visitors deserved a point, but luck was against them, clearly displayed in added time when substitute Joe Sutton just failed to reach a cross by the impressive Jordan NorvilleWilliams. Manager Marc Abbott in charge for just the second time expressed pride at the performance of his side and believes the experienced gained by his charges will be of immense value despite the defeat. His team selection saw Jacob Joseph, Leon Fulianty and Prince Mutswunguma dropped to the bench to be replaced by Gary Wharton returning from injury, and two new signings, defender Joe Hood and wide man Harry Beckley. St Neots had been beaten at home by the odd goal in three earlier in the season by their Worcestershire hosts after they had led by a Dylan Williams goal at the break. It was disappointing that the powerful home side went ahead after just three minutes in the first attack of the match. Their attack down the left split the St Neots defence and having been involved in the break, Greg Mills then sprinted forward to turn an Aaron Forde cross past Finley Iron to score what proved to be the only goal of the match. Robbie Thompson-Brown then shot narrowly over the bar and a feature of the early play was the ball retention of the home side as they waited patiently for an opening to present itself. On the break St Neots carved out openings but Gary Wharton

shot wide after good work by Scott Pollock and then Harry Beckley cut in from the left to shoot over the bar. Stourbridge are the second highest goal scorers in the league and their potential was clearly displayed as striker Luke Benbow a former National League player with Solihull Moors, and Greg Mills late of Derby County terrorised the St Neots defence with the latter twice shooting wide when well placed. Forde also ran at the defence shooting over the bar and putting a second effort wide so despite having a smaller share of possession, St Neots survived comfortably until the break.
player the only yellow card of the match. Norville-Williams took the free kick and from 25 yards beat the keeper but saw the ball land on the roof of the net. Stourbridge were now quite blatantly time-wasting to preserve their narrow advantage and as the match moved into added time Sutton just failed to convert that cross mentioned earlier and the same player had a second late chance that was too high. The St Neots team were cheered off by the home crowd – a deserved measure of their performance.
Both sides made half time substitutions with Prince Mutswunguma replacing Mason Rhiney for the visitors and playing down the slope St Neots began to look more confident. However the home side clearly decided to go for the kill and Iron had to produce two outstanding saves to keep his side in the game. He first denied substitute Bilal Yafai pushing away his fierce shot and then added the save of the match after 52 minutes, acrobatically denying a Leon Broadhurst header from a Thompson-Brown cross. Benbow then displayed great skill to take two defenders out of the game with a clever turn to set up Forde but his low shot rebounded from the inside of a post to be cleared. Although the visitors were enjoying a much greater share of play, they created few significant chances, but the balance of play was switching and with a quarter of an hour remaining the home side seemed to go into defensive mode. Second St Neots substitute Joe Sutton was looking lively up front and after shooting narrowly wide he was cynically tripped from behind by Broadhurst earning the home
