Greenie’s Greeting Mike Green

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of

the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League South Premier Division Central match. Today we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Lowestoft Town and we hope your brief stay with us here is a pleasant one. What a fantastic few days for the Club we have just witnessed. Last Saturday saw us hold a playoff seeking Biggleswade Town here at the Premier Plus Stadium, with our visitors equalising in added time to prevent us from taking a deserved three points with goals from GARY WHARTON and PRINCE MUTSWUNGUMA. We had two new faces in Saturday’s squad too so please join me in welcoming DAN TRENDALL and AARON HUDSON to the club and these guys will add experience to our young squad. Saturday’s game was followed up by Monday night’s Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division match where our scholars entertained a very good Royston Town side and despite going a goal behind early on in the proceedings, came out 3-2 winners and claimed their third League Title in a row, with one game still to play. John Walker’s match report can be found later in this edition. Very well done to everyone connected with the Youth Team and we hope you go on to take the County Cup later in April too. Back to today then and we face a couple of familiar faces in Adam Tann and Dylan Williams, who recently left Biggleswade Town to join up with his ex-managers from his time on loan at AFC Sudbury. Get behind the lads as you always do and hopefully we can secure the win and the three points in our battle to avoid the drop. Til Next time….

BE LOUD… BE PROUD… BE A SAINT

Gaffer’s Notes… With Manager

Today we welcome Lowestoft Town FC to the Premier Plus Stadium - With Lowestoft currently

occupying the last relegation place & with ourselves sitting 1 point above in 19th place. We hope that all of their supporters and club officials present today enjoy their time at the game today.

Firstly, I’d like to welcome two new additions to the St Neots squad - Dan Trendall has joined from Saffron Walden Town where he’s had a fantastic season, scoring 20+ goals and gained lots of positive reviews from his consistent performances this year. Dan’s profile is one that fits in with our philosophy. Secondly, Aaron Hudson had previously had numerous sessions in preseason - he has step 3/4 experience so like Dan will be a valuable player from now until the end of the season.

Last weekend saw us take away a point versus Biggleswade Town, drawing 2-2. Personally, Myself, Clemmo and Ben thought the endeavour and commitment shown by the players was excellent for long periods of the game and it’s the small details that can really hurt you at key moments of the game with Biggleswade equalising in the last minute of the match. Although the players and staff were disappointed with the ending, once again the young players have shown outstanding resilience to be pushing another top 8 team hard to gain another point. The second goal that we scored was an excellent goal, full of combinations, forward running and quality. Once again there were some competent performances from a side who are growing and maturing week by week, both on and off the pitch.

Today we host Lowestoft Town, who have some fantastic people in Jamie Godbold & Andy

Reynolds leading their side. Having followed their journey, it will great to be opposite them both in the dug out. The support we have received over the last few games has been fantastic and we hope as many of the supporters continue to drive the players on, we all really appreciate each and everyone’s commitment to helping keep St Neots Town FC in the Southern League Premier Division. Although today’s match is an important game, each game will have an importance at this time of the year. I’m sure that there will be lots of twists and turns right up until April 27th.

We hope you have

you all enjoy the game and continue your fantastic support

all shown over recent weeks.

OPPONENT SPOTLIGHT

LOWESTOFT TOWN FC Joined League: 1887 Chairman: Gary Keyzor Website: www.lowestofttownfc.co.uk Lowestoft Town have a fine history stretching back well over 100 years. The club is first recorded as East Suffolk F C with games, all friendlies in those days, recorded back in 1884. On merging with the original Kirkley club the title of Lowestoft was adopted in 1887 with ‘Town’ added in 1890. When the Norfolk & Suffolk League was formed in 1897, providing the first inter-county competitive matches, Lowestoft dominated, winning the title 6 times in the first 7 years. The ‘odd’ season out 1899-1900 saw Lowestoft’s attentions turn to the F Amateur Cup with victories over such famous names as Leytonstone (9-0), and Gt Marlow (1-0) on the way to the final which brought a 1-5 defeat by Bishop Auckland at Leicester. In 1904 Lowestoft had to appear before a F A Commission to answer charges of professionalism after a testimonial had raised just under £5 for player Fred Timoney who was about to emigrate. Norwich City who had ‘poached’ 4 of Lowestoft’s successful side amongst others were also called before the commission. Whilst City accepted the ruling and formally adopted professionalism to start on the road that has seen them up amongst the top clubs in

the country, Lowestoft paid a restitution of 2 guineas to regain amateur status. In 1925 came the decision to adopt the blue and white colours that have served them so well since. Lowestoft became founder members of the Eastern Counties League in 1935 but before starting out on this new challenge once again merged with local rivals Kirkley. The move proved a wise one with the first season seeing them sharing the title with Harwich & Parkston and then winning it outright 2 years later. Lowestoft took the bold step of becoming semi-professional in 1962. & 7 ECL titles and twice runners up in the following 9 seasons is clear testimony to the manner in which they dominated in those years. The ECL title was again won in 1977/8. The 1980s saw a decline in the club’s fortunes as crowds and income dropped. The unique club pavilion, originally the Yacht Club before being taken down and moved from the harbour to the Crown Meadow in 1902, was gradually falling into disrepair and the floodlighting system installed in 1964 was coming to the end of its lifespan. The floodlights were updated in 1986 and the new dressing room complex occupied in 1989 and at last attention could be paid to

playing matters. As playing fortunes declined a 19 year old local lad signed for the club in 1980 who was to figure prominently in the affairs of the club for the next 30 plus years. Micky Chapman soon became a favourite with his all action style, eye for the goal, long flowing hair and a genuine desire to bring success back to the club. 5 ‘Player of the Year’ trophies adorn his display cabinet as testimony to the respect he has earned from supporters and players alike. The 1990s saw Micky progress from captain to assistant manager and finally manager in 1994. A persistent back injury forced Mick to hang up his boots in 1997 allowing him to concentrate fully on the managerial side. With the unwavering support of successive chairmen Mick had been able to improve the side year by year. In February 2012 he took charge of his 1000th game as Lowestoft manager. After several years in the doldrums the 21st century has seen Micky team up with Ady Gallagher to bring a return to trophy winning days with the Ridgeons League title won twice, the League Cup collected twice and the Suffolk Premier Cup brought back to the Meadow five times. The

culmination of all that recent success came in May 2008 when joint managers Micky Chapman and Ady Gallagher proudly led their squad out onto the hallowed Wembley pitch in the F A Carlsberg Vase final. On a blazing hot Sunday afternoon in front of over 14,000 Lowestoft supporters, the Blues were in the lead for three quarters of the game before conceding a last minute goal to lose out to Kirkham & Wesham by the odd goal of three. Season 2008-2009 saw the first team win a League and County Cup double, as well as reach the semi final of the F A Carlsberg Vase and the season ended with promotion to the Ryman League Division One North. Success continued unabated in 2009/10 with back to back promotions seeing the Blues soar to the Ryman Premier Division at the first attempt achieving a century of points and goals for the second consecutive season. An excellent F A Cup run saw the first round proper reached with the run ended at Wrexham by a cruel deflected goal in the final minutes. The first season in the Ryman Premier Division saw the Trawlerboys involved in the promotion race right to the end. There was just 9 minutes of the season left when Tonbridge Angels scored the goal that gave them a 3-4 victory and ended Lowestoft’s hopes of a third successive promotion. It was a similar story in the following 2 seasons with late goals in the Play Off final denying them promotion before the dream of Step 2 football was realised in 2014 with a play off victory

over AFC Hornchurch and a 3rd promotion in 6 seasons. Season 2014-2015 was one of consolidation in the highest sphere the club has ever reached and despite several early morning departures and a mere 8500 plus miles of travelling a satisfactory season ended with them holding a 16th place finish suffering just a single defeat in their final 13 fixtures. On top of this the Blues closed their season out by winning the Suffolk Premier Cup for the twelfth time; beating Whitton United 2-1 after extra time. It was also a season that marked the farewell of a true Lowestoft Town legend with Micky Chapman retiring after the last league game of the season at home to Barrow, who sealed the league title that day with a 3-2 victory over the Blues. After 32 years, 480 first team appearances, 193 goals, 1640 games and 147,600 plus minutes as a player, player/ manager and then manager during that time, it was the end of an era for a figure who will forever be etched in the history of Lowestoft Town FC. Season 2015-2016 saw Ady Gallagher in sole charge for the first time but a season plagued with injuries saw the Trawlerboys relegated on the last day of the season on goal difference bringing a return to the Ryman League Premier Division. Season 2016-2017 was to prove one of consolidation as they adjusted to life at step 3 in a season once again plagued with injuries. Season 2017-2018 proved to be one of turmoil as firstly Ady Gallagher stepped down to be replaced by his assistant Dale

Brooks. The club was then hit by financial problems which saw the departure of several leading players but Brooks achieved a minor miracle by avoiding relegation with the remnants of his squad aided by a bevy of youth loan signings and the clubs scholar’s. Brooks stepped down during the summer to be replaced by two former players Jamie Godbold and Andy Reynolds who between themselves boast over 900 appearances for the Trawlerboys. With a mixed squad of experience and exciting young prospects, optimism is rife for the forthcoming season. SOUTHERN LEAGUE CENTRAL PREMIER DIVISION

St Neots Town They say lightning does not strike twice but St Neots are living proof that it does, and two goalkeeping errors – one at each end – made this outcome of the contest happen. For the second consecutive week a goal conceded three minutes into added time robbed the young inexperienced home side of two extra points they had worked so hard to achieve but the single point was enough to lift them out of the relegation zone for the first time in as many months. Ultimately it was inexperience that cost them dear, but they continue to learn as they build experience at this higher level of football for most of them. The commitment of the side is beyond question and proud Manager Marc Abbott heaped praise upon his team in his post-match interview. He had been forced into a team change when playmaker Scott Pollock failed to recover from the injury sustained in the previous match, so he brought in Dan Trendall for his debut and he added pace and imagination in attack. The first serious effort on goal after 6 minutes saw Sean Lucien’s effort blocked but St Neots took the lead two minutes later. A long clearance by James Philip sailed over the heads of defenders and former St Neots custodian Sam Donkin opted to wait for the ball to reach his area but Gary Wharton pounced to steer the ball past him and into the open net – his third goal in consecutive matches. The visitors had a further shock after 11minutes when David LongeKing misdirected a header back to his keeper but luckily for him the ball passed the wrong side of a post. However, St Neots’ lead was short-lived for after 15 minutes a Matt Ball corner was headed back by Jordan Gent and Joe White headed past the keeper. Prince Mutswunguma

2

Biggleswade Town

tried a lengthy effort that just cleared the crossbar and then Philip did well to push away a searing cross from Lucien that looked to be creeping in at the far post. Ten minutes before the break St Neots regained the lead as Dan Trendall switched play from left to right and Mason Rhiney’s cross was stabbed in at close range by Prince Mutswunguma. It was the first time St Neots had scored twice in a league match since 8th December. Five minutes before the break Philip saved well again and then White headed in from an offside position as the visitors sought parity. The second half saw the visitors adopt a more attacking formation with former St Neots player Claudio Ofosu on to test St Neots down the flanks. Lucien seemed to be getting all the better chances for the visiting side, but he sent a free kick high over the bar and was well off target with two more efforts. St Neots seemed to have lost the rhythm that had seem them competitive in the first 45 minutes and their back line had to defend well as their opponents began to dominate possession. They looked particularly threatening from set pieces with their tall defenders supplementing their attack. Another striker was added to the visiting attack, but Ball squandered a good chance with a centrally positioned free kick that he dragged well wide. St Neots did threaten on the break with Trendall a constant threat, but they lacked the finishing touch to carve out what could have been a clinching goal. With five minutes left Philip again rescued his side with a point blank save to deny White and Ofosu earned a booking for simulation diving dramatically in the penalty area. The Referee signalled four added minutes and in the third of those the

2

visitors stole a goal and a point. It came from one of many corners after the excellent Philip had mishandled a shot dropping the ball over the bye line – this one delivered by Lucien and when St Neots failed to clear there were two shots blocked before Jordan Gent drove home from close range. It was a cruel ending, but it still took St Neots to a third consecutive match without defeat, following the defection of almost their whole team. St Neots: Philip, Hood, Norville-Williams, Miles, Hughes, Shaw, Mutswunguma, Rhiney, Wharton, Sutton, Trendall Subs: Clarke (for Prince 62 mins), Beckley (for Sutton 77 mins), Rider (for Wharton 88 mins), Hudson and Fulianty. THURLOW NUNN YOUTH LEAGUE CAMBRIDGE DIVISION ST NEOTS TOWN U18 St Neots Town U18 side are the Champions of the Cambridge Division of the Thurlow Nunn League for a record breaking third time in succession – with a match to spare. That was the outcome of a very competitive final home league match of the campaign with visiting Royston Town who still had a mathematical chance of the title. The visitors had lost just once this season – at home to St Neots – and they posed a real threat to the celebrations with a determined performance. St Neots were without their injured midfield playmaker Adrian O’Hara for the first time this season, so they had to reorganise but the bonus for them was the return of Jacob Joseph following his injury lay-off. With the stakes obviously high neither side settled quickly although two early openings for St Neots went begging as Joe Rider saw his effort easily saved ad Owen Dunnett headed narrowly over the bar from a corner. Then in their first significant attack the visitors took the lead as Noah Costin cut in from the right to shoot across the keeper.

3

ROYSTON TOWN U18

St Neots set about repairing the damage and Merkel Cousins headed over the bar, but the match became over competitive as Jack Dickerson was booked for a dangerous late tackle. Reif Clarke was then cynically brought down three yards inside the penalty area but the free kick given outside the box and as St Neots built the pressure Nehemiah Goodridge saw a header cleared off the line. Then a minute before the break from a Clarke corner, goal ace Joe Rider headed home for the side to go to the break on level terms. St Neots looked more comfortable after half time and when Clarke burst through the defence visiting keeper Christopher Gough saved well at the expense of a corner. On the turn Rider sent a shot just off target but on the hour, St Neots took control with a quality goal built from a neat Rider flick to free Jacob Joseph and his early cross picked out Reif Clarke for a clinical finish. For a while the home side dominated with Royston managing just one shot from distance by Dickerson

2

that was too high. After Gough had saved well from a Leon Fulianty free kick the defining moment arrived fourteen minutes from time as Dan Olive produced a stunning 30 yards effort to make it 3-1 with the goal of the season. Predictably with nothing to lose Royston threw everything forward and claimed a late consolation goal three minutes from time as Daniel Baulk forced the ball home from a Francis Shilton cross but St Neots had done enough to take the points and the title. St Neots: Burberry, Olive, Goodridge, Brown, Dunnett, Fulianty, Cousins, Routs, Rider, Joseph, Clarke Subs used: Leagas, Wood and Rowland. Cards: Brown (Y – 44 mins), Clarke (Y – 48 mins) Referee: Paul Dobbs

Last week it was reported that plans by the ownership at North Ferriby United to both re-name and re-locate the club appear to have fallen through. The proposals, which understandably triggered a furious reaction from the Villagers’ faithful, were a real injustice and would have essentially amounted to the theft of a famous football club. The problem of owners going to war with their own fan base has always been an issue in football and is a problem that affects teams in the Football League and the Premier League just as much as in Non-League. It is a tricky situation for the FA and although there are some that argue that the organization should perhaps perform more stringent tests on potential owners before ratifying a sale, this is much harder in practice than it seems in principle. In an age of extreme political and economic divisions, football clubs have the potential to offer a sacred space of unity and togetherness. It is therefore a tremendously sad sight to see when fan bases become divided and disenfranchised at the hands of rash and self-serving owners. Thankfully, for North Ferriby fans at least, this period in their history looks likely to soon be over after it was revealed that owner Carl Chadwick is believed to be looking to part ways with the club. Hopefully the Yorkshire club can now be passed into the hands of a group who want to properly engage with the fan base and make Grange Lane into a place where people can get away from the stresses and strains of modern life for a couple of hours every two weeks and simply enjoy a match with people they may otherwise have never spoken to –that’s what football is all about!
