WELCOME A very decent return to form for the lads as the season heads to a finale Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium, home of the Saints and the Mick George Academy, for this, our last Evostik League South Premier Division match of the season and probably for good as we are more than likely moving to the new Central League Premier Division next season. Today we extend a very warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Gosport Borough and we hope you enjoy your stay with us here this afternoon and also a huge welcome to the players and adults of Alconbury Under 7s who are spending the afternoon with today and will be leading the Saints onto the pitch come kick off time. Our last game here saw us destroy a, previously unbeaten in eleven games, Banbury United by three goals to nil. I have to say that personally, it was one of the most complete performances I’ve witnessed form the Saints for a very, very long time. Our forward line was on absolute fire Jordan, Dyls and Nabs scoring the goals, assisted by DSF, who terrorised the visitor’s back line all night and let’s not forget the rest of the team who defended superbly all night. Special mention fior young Fin Iron
who made a worldy save right on half time to keep us in front. This was followed by a trip to second placed Kings Lynn Town on Saturday and once again, we returned with a positive result from Norfolk, coming home with a point after a one-one draw. Yet again, Fin Iron was heavily involved in proceedings; saving a first half penalty and that man Nabil Shariff scoring the all important equaliser very late on after we had finally been breached after seventy-six minutes. So, all in all, a very decent return to form for the lads as the season heads to a finale with a Senior Cup final appearance coming up on Wednesday evening against Eynesbury Rovers here at the Premier Plus Stadium. Please note admission for this game, set by the local Football Association, is £8 for Adults and £5 for Concessions/Children.
Don’t forget that tickets are available for Presentation Night on Saturday May 12th – costing £20 a head. This includes a meal, casino, disco and of course, the Awards themselves. Well, that’s a wrap from me for another season. Thank you to everyone who has taken time to read the publications throughout the season. Please keep looking at our website / social media for details of our exciting Pre Season schedule which is just being finalised and of course details of our new league in which we will be competing next season. Cheer the lads on loud and proud for the remaining two games and I look forward to seeing you all in pre-season. Thanks for your ongoing support – Enjoy your summer breaks

MANAGER’S NOTES A warm welcome to our visitors today, Gosport Borough and to all you fans who have come to watch on this final league game of the season. We have been on a great run recently with some superb performances and mature displays, so one final league performance of that showing is in order. With 12th place and a top half position looking secure, we still want to finish the season with our mini unbeaten run intact. I’d like to say a genuine, huge thanks to the fans.
You’ve supported us through some ups and downs but like to think more ups this year and if you can give us one big last roar we’d respect it so much as I promise to prepare the players to match your class and efforts. I’d also like to warmly welcome Alconbury colts who are our mascots today and wish them
a great afternoon and experience at the club Remember, we still have our Cup Final on Wednesday (2nd May) but today it’s all focus on the job in hand and ensuring we perform for you. Once again, thank you all for your fantastic support this season. COYS Matt Clements

GOSPORT BOROUGH FC Joined League: 1944 Chairman: Anthony Stares Website: www.gosportboroughfc.co.uk Nickname: The Borough
A special welcome for our final Southern League Premier Division fixture of the season with GOSPORT BOROUGH our visitors this afternoon. When these notes were written it was unclear whether our visitors need to win today to retain their Step Three status. Last Saturday Gosport recorded only their third home league victory of the season – this in fine style as they thrashed visiting Frome Town 7-0! With Dunstable getting a point from their home match with struggling St Ives the victory over Frome lifted Gosport off the bottom of the table for the first time since Christmas Eve and it left the one relegation place with a very dramatic finale. The table last Saturday evening showed Gosport and Dunstable each with fourteen points and an identical goal difference of -107. However, Dunstable had a game in hand away at Biggleswade which they were due to complete on Tuesday, and then on Thursday (less than 48 hours ago) the bottom two were due to go head to head at Dunstable with a ‘winner takes all’ likely outcome. (A good example of the wonderful ability of the computer to add drama to the season). As short a time ago as April 2015, Gosport finished sixth in the (then) Conference South, just three points off a play off place that could have propelled them into the Conference just one step below the Football League and in those three short years since they could
be facing Step Six football next season. Come 4.50 pm this afternoon they will know their fate and even if they survive it will only be because of the restructure of football at Step Three for next season. As this is my final programme of the season may I pay tribute to Manager Matt Clements (our longest serving Step Three Manager) and his management team, and all our players for giving us our second-best season ever at this level of football. Finally, thanks also to our supporters – you are the reason we all do what we do for St Neots Town Football Club. See you all next season (first pre-season friendly in about ten weeks!!). FORMATION AND EARLY YEARS Gosport Borough Athletic Club were founded in 1944 in an initiative to bring back organised football, athletics, swimming and cycling to the town of Gosport after a break of several years. In their first season (1944–45), the football section of the Club won the Portsmouth and District League Division One under the guidance of former Southampton player, Stan Cribb.[3] The line-up at that time included Jimmy Scoular and Peter Harris, who both went on to become full internationals. For their second season, the Club were accepted into the Hampshire League and won the Division One title at their first attempt.
This feat was not repeated for thirty-one seasons, despite the club being a major force in Hampshire football during that period. THE SOUTHERN LEAGUE: 1978 TO 1992 Under the management of the long-serving and former club skipper Tony Brickwood, Gosport won the Hampshire League title in successive seasons (1976–77 and 1977–78) and were elected to the Southern Football League. In the team’s first four seasons they never finished outside the top four and when the League was restructured for the start on the 1982–83 season, Gosport were placed in the Premier Division. Two years later Gosport lost their Premier Division status and were relegated to the Southern Division. However, the next season saw the team bounce straight back after an incredible run of sixteen wins in their final nineteen matches. “Boro’” still needed to win the final match to be certain of promotion and, in front of a home crowd in excess of 1,500, they demolished Salisbury 5–0.In the 1987–88 season the team were once again threatened with relegation, and until the April of that season Boro’ had looked odds-on favourites for the drop. However, a run in the Hampshire Senior Cup that took the side all the way to the final – played at The Dell, home of then-Premier League club Southampton, lifted the players’ spirits. Victory over
favourites Farnborough in the final was followed by a good run of results in the league – lifting the team out of trouble to remain in the Premier Division. The club enjoyed their highest ever finish in the 1988–89 season, when seventh place in the Premier Division was achieved. Unfortunately, a mass exodus of players and a change in the management saw the team relegated to the Southern Division the following season, before a further relegation to the Wessex League in 1992. WESSEX LEAGUE: 1992 TO 2007 Following relegation the Chairman at the time, Ian Hay, appointed Roger Sherwood as manager. Although Boro’ had three good seasons under Sherwood, the Wessex League Cup in 1992–93 was, in his first season in charge, his only major success. After the departure of Sherwood at the start of the 1995–96 season, the Management Committee undertook a review of the Club’s policies, the result of which was to commence a period of financial consolidation and re-structuring. Three former Gosport players, John Hawes, Dave Pitt and Barry Cook, took up the running of the side, with a new emphasis on forming a team of locally based players and developing an extensive youth policy. In 1997, Boro’ approached Gomer Football Club, a successful youth club, to form an affiliation. This presented the senior side with the opportunity to tap into emerging local talent, while also providing this talent with a chance to aim for a higher standard of football than may have been achieved normally after youth football. Nevertheless, Boro’s position in the Wessex League
continued to deteriorate. Dave Pitt and Barry Cook resigned in October 1999 after a particularly difficult start to the 1999–2000 season. John Hawes became Chairman of the club, but resigned from that position after one year to return to his coaching role. During this period, Ian Hay restructured the club’s finances and implemented a new and relatively unique Trustee Scheme, which gave the club a firm financial base for the future. Dave Taviner, another former player, took over as caretaker manager until former reserve team manager Mick Marsh was appointed as the new first team manager in December 1999. At the start of the 2000– 01 season, Vice-Chairman John Stimpson was elected to the Chairmanship of the club. He immediately agreed with Marsh that the club should continue to develop young local players and also look to include a mix of more experienced players in the first team.Marsh, along with his assistant Gary Lee, spent five seasons as manager. In that period the club’s gradual decline was halted and Boro’ were once again headed in the right direction. In Marsh’s five seasons the club finished in the top four of the Wessex League on four occasions and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Vase in 2003–04. With Marsh retiring from the game at the end of the 2004– 05 season to move to Spain, the club appointed John Robson as his successor; Robson’s tenure only lasted a few months, and in December 2005 the club appointed Alex Pike as first team manager. Pike came to Gosport with relative pedigree, having the honour of being the Wessex League’s most successful manager; having won league and league cup honours on
several occasions with his teams and also winning the FA Vase with Wimborne Town in 1992, his appointment seemed appropriate for a club aiming for promotion back to the Southern League. In his first full season in charge, Pike lived up to his high reputation, and Boro’ lifted the Wessex League championship title – their first title in 29 years. The championship was won on the last day of the season at title rivals AFC Totton; Boro’ had to avoid defeat by two goals to lift the title and, in a nervous afternoon, eventually lost 1–0 to win the championship on goal difference.Having captured the title, Boro’ officials and supporters waited for the news from The Football Association on their application for promotion. Two weeks after lifting the title, promotion was confirmed and Boro’ were elected back into the Southern League for the 2007–08 season. SOUTHERN LEAGUE RETURN: 2007 TO 2013 Things started well for The Boro’ on their return to the Southern League – at one point the side sat third in the Southern League Division One South & West table. However, a poor run of results before and after the Christmas period saw Gosport falling off the pace and towards the lower reaches of the table, before a more balanced side picked themselves up and strung together a solid run of results to lift the team to a creditable 11th-placed finish by the end of the campaign. The following season, 2008–09, started well and by Christmas The Boro’ were looking likely to occupy a play-off place by the end of the season. However, the board of the club were forced to cut the playing budget when the 2008 recession affected some of
the club’s business partners and sponsorship money failed to materialise. Not wishing to push the club into debt, the board handed Alex Pike a new playing budget of £0 and consequently, the last three months of the season were a struggle for the side as they slipped gradually down the table to finish 12th. A better season followed in 2009–10, with the club threatening to achieve a play-off place all season before trailing off in the last few weeks, eventually finishing 8th but the upward momentum failed to continue into 2010–11. From the outset, Alex Pike’s side stuttered through their league season – mainly due to poor form away from home, which saw the team record only four wins on the road all season. With the side rarely able to put together a run of more than a couple of wins, The Boro’ slipped down the table and finished the season in 13th position, their worst since re-joining the Southern League. However, the 2011–12 was considerably better with Gosport continually well placed in the table, finally finishing in third place to qualify for the play-offs. Boro’ won their semi against near neighbours Sholing thanks to a superb strike by the division’s leading goal scorer Justin Bennett. In the final, away at Poole Town, Gosport trailed 0–1 until veteran striker Steve Claridge came off the bench and scored in the second minute of injury time to level the tie at 1–1, taking the game to extra-time. In extra-time, Gosport scored twice to regain their place in the Southern League Premier Division for the first time since 1990. 2012–2013 started indifferently, with the club initially in danger of relegation. However, an FA Cup run which saw them equal their previous
club best in making the fourth qualifying round, beating Bath City on the way, was a precursor to an unbeaten run of 23 games which lifted them into the play-off zone. After a run of poor results it required results elsewhere and a narrow 1–0 victory on the last day of the season to take them into the final play off place. A win against 2nd placed Stourbridge and a play-off final win against Hemel Hempstead (2–2 after extra time, 4–5 on penalties) saw the club promoted to the Conference South for the first time in the club’s history. THE CONFERENCE: 2013 TO DATE The club initially struggled through the first two thirds of the 2013–14 season as they came to grips with life in the Conference South. But a run in the FA Trophy gelled the team and the league performances followed. As the team progressed through round after round of the Trophy, they also climbed the league table – eventually moving well clear of the drop zone. The Trophy run continued to a “Battle of Hampshire” two-legged semi-final against near neighbours Havant & Waterlooville which saw underdogs Gosport win 3–1 on aggregate to book a final with Cambridge United at Wembley. The final (on March 23) ended in a 4–0 defeat despite matching their senior opponents for the first 40 minutes in front of 18,120 spectators. During the 2014–15 season, Borough qualified for the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. They were drawn against League One side Colchester United; the club installed additional seating and
terracing to raise the capacity of Privett Park to 4,800 for the match, which was played on Sunday 9 November 2014 and resulted in a 3–6 victory for Colchester. Boro’ went on to finish sixth in the Vanarama South, missing out on the play-offs by just three points. They did however cap another fine season by winning the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1988. On a chilly evening in early May, they beat Southern League Sholing 3–0 at Fratton Park, with goals from Justin Bennett, Adam Wilde and Matt Paterson. Another big plus was the club’s record goal scorer Justin Bennett winning the League’s Golden Boot and booking his place in the League’s “All-star” team for the 2014/15 season. The 2015-16 season got off to a good start with the club pushing themselves into play-off contention from the off but as the new year came, the club were hit with financial problems. Several players left the club in February and March after the club failed to pay their wages and an unpaid tax bill meant The Boro’ were under a transfer embargo and could not replace the players they’d lost. The form that had Alex Pike’s men looking certain for a play-off place disappeared and the last few weeks of the season became a struggle with the team recording only one win in their remaining ten league games. Talismanic striker Justin Bennett also announced that after nine seasons at Privett Park, he would leave the club at the end of the season but the 2015-16 campaign did at least end on a high with a 2-1 win against AFC Portchester in the Russell Cotes Cup Final and with Bennett recording his 262nd and 263rd goals in Gosport colours.

Changing face of match officials Previously there has been a perception of who a referee is and what they look like – now they come from all walks of life and backgrounds. We meet our new Level 3 referees every July. You could line those 90-100 people up in any walk of life and you wouldn’t necessarily pick them out as referees. They are young, many from BAME backgrounds and more and more females – probably not what you’d expect 20 or 30 years ago. People are really seeing refereeing as a career where they can really achieve. This could either be at the elite level, where it can be a full-time career, or taking charge of games in front of big crowds, even in Non-League football. People really aspire to take charge of important games where they can have a really positive influence. Every game matters to players, managers, clubs and supporters – but also referees. If they have ambition to progress, they know they also need to perform. One bad decision could change your season. Just like promotion and relegation for clubs, it’s the same for officials. For every game someone referees, there are two marks – one from each club. There are also observers out watching and that is put into an Observers Merit List. The two are compared and more often than not, are not too dissimilar. If you’re showing in a season you are consistently one of the best referees, you have a good chance of promotion. It’s much like a player culture. If you prove you are good enough you will get an opportunity at the next level. Why should you be held back if you’re the best National League North referee even if you are in your early 20s? Similarly if you’re 52 – just because you have less active years in front of you, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to progress up. It gives service to competition and also rewards the referee. FROM NON-LEAGUE TO THE WORLD CUP FINAL The National League System structure in this country provides an unbelievable learning experience for English match officials. As a country we are blessed we have this 150-year-old structure that has effected itself now into such a strong Pyramid. In the ninth tier of football in this country can mean refereeing in front of 1,000 people. In other countries the ninth tier could be a local park. So it’s real credit to the structure, the clubs, the teams and the players for providing such good quality for referees to get such good experience at what can be an early stage of their career. You grow with the Pyramid. We always use Howard Webb as the example. Like every referee we now see in the Premier League, he came through the National League System. He was in charge of Northern Counties East games, the Northern Premier League and so on. In 2010, he took charge of the World Cup Final between Spain and Netherlands. INCREASE IN APPOINTMENTS AT STEP 3 & 4 With the additional Step 3&4 divisions being introduced into the National League System next season, it brings an increase in the amount of appointments that will have to be made. The appointments at those levels are made by the FA. We have a Northern Appointments Officer and a Southern Appointments Officer, who make a vast amount of appointments and re-appointments each season. A Level 3 referee, who takes charge of Step 3 and 4 matches, will on average have between 30 and 40 appointments per season. Some will also act as assistants on the National League as well as the National League North and South divisions. But just taking Steps 3 and 4, it will increase by two or three games per referee. That might not sound much, but if you times that by 330 Level 3 referees it soon adds up. Every April and May, we have a calculation that looks at the amount of fixtures we’ll have the next season, geography, the average availability time of any Level 3 referee – work commitments, the average injury time, availability over Bank Holidays, Christmas and New Year – and gives us a number of how many referees we need. EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT This is a side that, naturally, people don’t always see. We at The FA, alongside the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), have made a vow to offer more training, education and development for match officials. Not only does it service the game at Steps 4, 3, 2 and 1, it’s also planning for the Football League and Premier League officials of the future. So, who is going to be the next Howard Webb refereeing the World Cup final? FA CORE (FA Centre of Refereeing Excellence) is comprised of around 300 referees and 50 performance coaches. A number are referees at the top level while others are retired. It is designed to enhance the training and development given to the officials identified as a having potential to progress. If you’ve got someone on the phone three or four times a week, your chance of becoming a better referee is enhanced. Hopefully leading to better chances of promotion. Over the past three years in England we’ve also taken on specialisation – people are now focusing on being a referee or an assistant referee. By people making that commitment, it says to The FA that we need to invest in them. Previously people may have wanted to keep their status as a Level 3 referee and take charge of, say, Wingate & Finchley, but only so they could run the line at Leeds United the week after. Nowadays it’s, ‘I’m refereeing at Wingate & Finchley because I want to’. IMPROVING RELATIONSHIPS Previously a referee has been seen as out on their own, working in silos. When you actually sit down and explain to clubs what we’re trying to do and the positive impact the work with referees has, they are very receptive to it. For the first time this year, we’ve offered visits to all clubs at Step 1 to 4. A member of The FA or PGMOL will go and talk about what’s topical, what laws have changed and explain to clubs how they can really help themselves. It’s also an opportunity for clubs to offer their thoughts on things they may be confused on or bits of law that they have queries on. We also attend the National League, Isthmian League, Northern Premier League and Southern League pre-season meetings. It’s vital there is a two-way relationship.
1ST TEAM REPORT ST NEOTS TOWN Southern League Premier Division St Neots capitalized on an impressive start to their penultimate home match of the season to take their points tally to 60 for the season – their second highest haul in the Southern League Premier Division. It was their second consecutive home victory over Redditch have been beaten in the sides’ first four meetings at the Premier Plus Stadium. After their disappointing run of results in February and early March when they scored just once in four matches, the last four have brought twelve goals and three victories. The two sides had drawn 2-2 at Redditch earlier in the season when St Neots conceded two goals in the last eight minutes but this time there was to be no repeat as the home side hung on to their half time advantage to claim victory. After the long midweek trip to Dorchester Manager Matt Clements recalled young full back Jordan Norville-Williams and reshuffled his side leaving David Bridges on the bench. In the first attack of the match after 55 seconds St Neots though they had won a penalty when Dylan Williams tumbled but the Referee issued a yellow card for simulation, but the home side were rewarded for their brisk start when they went ahead after five minutes. The ball ran towards the bye line and Tom Meechan was first to move, and he crossed to the far post where defender Liam McDevitt bundled the ball into the net for the opening goal. Redditch replied with a swift attacking move that saw home

keeper Finlay Iron parry a snap shot, the ball running loose to Adam Page, but he skied his effort over the bar. Nabil Shariff was looking lively, and he twice shot over the bar, the second time after cleverly creating space for himself. After 24 minutes St Neots had a let off when an inswinging Tristian Dunkley corner was not cleared and Montel Gibson headed towards an unguarded net, but Liam McDevitt got back to clear off the line. At the other end McDevitt won a Williams free kick but off-balance fired over the bar and eight minutes before the break, St Neots doubled their lead. A defensive clearance cannoned off a defender and ran towards the bye line. Tom Meechan retrieved the ball and sent in a low shot from a narrow angle that beat Ethan Ross in the visiting goal. The Redditch lifeline came three minutes before the break when Tom Wood was harshly penalized for a tackle on Louis Ezewele and Ashley Sammons rapped home the spot kick. Redditch upped their game upon the restart and Sammons shot wide when well-placed and the experience Stuart Fleetwood was played clear by Dunkley, but Iron got down to make a good save. After 64 minutes Redditch almost squared the contest when a Page corner was bundled into the net, but the Referee had spotted a push on the St Neots keeper and awarded a free kick. A minute later St Neots sent on two substitutes withdrawing the wide attacking players Sembie-Ferris and Williams and settled down to a 4-4-2 formation soaking up the Redditch pressure. Meechan had two shots over the bar, but
1
the game became scrappy with neither side able to dominate. Page had a shot well gathered by Iron and Sammons saw a rising shot blocked by a defender. Shariff continued to bother the visiting defence shooting wide and over the bar on the break, and teenager Jordan NorvilleWilliams joined the attack but was stopped when Ethan Ross dived at his feet. In the end with Taylor Parr dominant at the back St Neots held out comfortably for all three points.

1ST TEAM REPORT ST NEOTS TOWN Southern League Premier Division Unbeaten in their last eleven league games since the end of January, Banbury arrived at the Premier Plus Stadium as firm favorites to extend that run. However, St Neots having turned the corner since their dip in form, deservedly won this match to make it four wins in five starts. It was St Neots’ best home performance since beating Merthyr 5-2 back in December and it was achieved with a reassembled formation with Dion Sembie-Ferris leading the attack with Tom Meechan back at work in Somerset. The performance of the makeshift centre forward was outstanding with his pace being well supported by the other attacking players and when Banbury threw on all three permitted substitutes early in the second half in an attempt to snuff out the 2-0 lead conceded in the first 49 minutes, the defensive pairing of Liam McDevitt and Taylor Parr were at their imperious best with goalkeeper Finlay Iron having only one serious save to make in the match. Again, a shuffle of the squad saw fit again Johnny Herd return to the side with David Bridges and Scott Sinclair recalled with Tom Wood and Kyron Wiltshire making way. Relishing his new role Dion Sembie-Ferris had his first shot in the first minute saved comfortably by Jack Harding. After 16 minutes Nabil Shariff then brought a good low save from Harding following a long throw from Johnny Herd and after a quiet start St Neots were now in control. Relishing

their superior possession, they continued to press with Liam McDevitt twice finding time to join the attack, first to fire over the bar and then to head over from a Jordan Norville-Williams corner. The pressure told after 30 minutes when a defensive error by Charlie Wise was seized on by Jordan Norville-Williams who cut in from the left to fire low past Harding. Already Banbury were unhappy with their shape and possession and they made an early tactical change sending on Elliott Sandy to boost their flagging attack. Sembie-Ferris continued to harass the visiting defence and he shot just wide and over the bar before bringing a fine low save from Harding after good work by Shariff. Harding then saved bravely at the feet of the onrushing Norville-Williams and Shariff saw an overhead kick just clear the bar. Banbury’s one first half moment of defiance same in the final minute when substitute Sandy flicked on a cross by Paul Stonehouse, but the underworked Finlay Iron went full length to produce an instinctive save. Banbury introduced a second attacking substitute after the break but after four minutes St Neots stamped their authority with a well taken second goal as a Norville-Williams cross from the bye line picked out leading scorer Dylan Williams who claimed his fifteenth goal of the campaign bidding for the golden boot at the end of the season. SembieFerris collided with Harding after being played clear by Luke Knight but recovered after treatment and then from Williams corner a McDevitt header rebounded from the bar. Sandy had Banbury’s
0
only serious second half chance but ballooned over the bar after making space for himself and St Neots continued to coast with Shariff, Williams and Knight all close to adding a third goal. That third and clinching goal came four minutes from time when Shariff stole the ball off a defender before taking a return pass from Sembie-Ferris to shoot past the hapless Harding. St Neots then slowed proceedings by sending on all three substitutes, but their goal was never in serious danger and they were able to stroll to victory. U18 REPORT ST NEOTS TOWN U18 Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cambridge Division This could prove to be the most significant result of the campaign for St Neots as they produced a very gritty performance to inflict on Godmanchester only their third league defeat of the season. However, the result was not as clear cut as the score line suggests because for long periods the visitors shaded play but could not match their approach play with clear scoring chances. With Cambridge City surprisingly defeated at home by Saffron Walden on the night, it leaves Godmanchester as the only side that can overhaul St Neots for the league title provided each win their final matches. However, Godmanchester still have to play Cambridge City twice as well as Royston who are second in the table and Walden who are on a good run. In the first fifteen minutes St Neots produced their best football of the season battering the visiting defence and scoring twice and that tally could easily have been doubled. However,

GODMANCHESTER ROVERS U18
Godmanchester are not serious title challengers without good reason and they battled back and for long periods at the end of each half they were well on top. St Neots domination began after just six minutes when Aaron Hiscock jinked along the bye line to cross and when his effort was not cleared the ball fell to leading scorer Kieran Waites who lashed in his sixteenth goal of the season. Visiting keeper Shay Griffiths then saved well from George Holman and Hiscock shot over the bar after clever work by Andre Williams. Defender Archie Southeran joined the attack to head over from a corner and a Leon Fulianty shot was cleared off the line by Ben Casey. The pressure told after 13 minutes when Joe Brooks crossed for George Holman to head the second goal. Godmanchester gradually recovered from the onslaught and two lengthy free kicks from William Greatorex were comfortably saved but St Neots had lost their rhythm and after32 minutes a defensive error allowed Daniel Turnbull to lob advancing keeper George Bugg to put the

visitors back in the game. After the break there was a period of even play with Michael Speed firing over when well placed for the visitors, and St Neots having a Waites shot well saved by Griffiths. An outstanding save by Bugg from Turnbull preserved St Neots narrow lead and as the second half went on it became clear that a fourth goal would be significant for either side. It arrived seven minutes from time against the run of platy when St Neots skipper Alfie Donkin reacted first when a shot by Hiscock was blocked by a defender. It was Donkin’s fourth, but most important goal of the season and St Neots held out through seven minutes added time to claim victory.

1ST TEAM REPORT KINGS LYNN TOWN Southern League Premier Division At the start of the day Kings Lynn required six points from their last two matches to ensure the runners-up spot in the league and a home tie in the play-off semi-finals. After this battling performance by St Neots that deprived them of two of those points they must wait for results of other matches to see where they finish in the play-off places. St Neots were outplayed in the opening twenty minutes of the match but managed to survive the concession of a doubtful penalty before coming back to test their hosts. They then conceded a goal eleven minutes from time yet rolled up their sleeves to snatch a deserved equalizer and return home with a point that guarantees a finish in the top half of the league table. With most of his squad fit and available, Manager Matt Clements opted for just the one team change from the side that had so comprehensively beaten Banbury in midweek, restoring Tom Wood in defence in place of Scott Sinclair who was on the bench. Kings Lynn began in very confident style and might have scored in each of their first two attacks. In less than a minute former Saint Ryan Hawkins beat the offside trap to go clear to collect a Cameron King through ball, but he rushed his finish putting the ball high over the bar. Then after four minutes a Simon Lappin free kick was won in the air by a second former Saint, Tom Ward, but his header was wide. It was still all action around the St Neots penalty box when after 11

minutes St Neots skipper Luke Knight misjudged a through ball allowing it to run to Finlay Iron, but Hawkins stepped in to get to the ball first only to be brought down by Finlay Iron who received a yellow card. However, the young keeper then dived to his right to parry the resultant penalty kick by Simon Lappin who then put the rebound over the bar. In the next attack Taylor Parr cleared off the line from King and at this stage St Neots looked fortunate to still have their goal intact. Gradually, however, the pattern changed, and St Neots began to create openings of their own – the best falling to Dion Sembie-Ferris after neat work by Jordan Norville-Williams, but he missed his kick and the chance went begging. Just before the break Hawkins again ran at the defence with pace only to be upended by Taylor Parr who became the second visiting player to be booked. St Neots looked far more composed after half time and from a lengthy Johnny Herd throw, Nabil Shariff shot narrowly over the bar. A corner was then only cleared as far as NorvilleWilliams on the edge of the box, but his shot was well saved by the diving Alex Street. Lynn seemed to change their tactics, now playing the long ball game but Liam McDevitt and Parr were their usual dominant selves dealing effectively with the home sides’ arial attacks. Lynn then decided to apply more pressure by sending on two attacking substitutes, but this seemed to afford St Neots more space in midfield to create their own openings. After 69 minutes a long throw by Herd was nudged
1
on at the near post to Dylan Williams who was unmarked, but he volleyed carelessly over the bar and just five minutes later the same St Neots player went clear after the Referee had played a good advantage but once again his finish was high and wide. Those misses looked to have cost dear eleven minutes from time when Frazer Blake-Tracy went around a defender to cross from the left and for once the St Neots marking was poor as Michael Gash rose to head past Iron. That late blow might have been the end for many teams, but St Neots are more resilient and as Lynn sought to slow down play substitute Scott Sinclair crossed from the bye line and Nabil Shariff rose above Tom Ward to claim a deserved equalizer for his side. Even four minutes added time were insufficient for Lynn to create the second goal they craved.
