Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for today's Pitching-In Northern Premier League Midland Division game.

Today we extend a warm welcome to the Players, Officials and Supporters of Harborough Town Football Club and we hope your brief stay with us here in St Neots is an enjoyable one.

After missing last weekend's draw with Gresley Rovers here at the Premier Plus Stadium I'm delighted to be back today and back on the Mic too. Many thanks to Gary Wilson for stepping into the breach in my absence and I will be bringing you all the normal half time scores and 50/50 draw this afternoon.

So, last week's game ended in a draw courtesy of Trey Charles' twentieth goal of the season. We didn't lose but if truth be told, I'm sure both managers would admit the point really didn't help either side in their quests for Step Four survival. Another tough game in store today against a side who are still knocking on the playoff's door. Last weekend over visitors played out a goalless draw at Bedworth United whilst we were drawing here. We had a couple of new faces in the side last weekend, one of which may be familiar to some Saints fans with the return of centre back Tommy Boxer and striker Albert Adu also joining the ranks so it's a big Saints welcome guys and we hope your time with us will be enjoyable and fruitful. Saturday also saw striker Trey Charles hit the Twenty Goal mark for the season, something that hasn't been done for a good few seasons since Tom Meechan last achieved that tally so a massive well done to you Trey.

I would like to offer a warm welcome to the Fans, Officials, Management and Players of Harborough Town to the Premier Plus Stadium for today's game.

Earlier in the season we had a competitive game with our visitors on their 3G surface and after taking a 1-0 lead at half time I feel sure we where close to securing a precious away victory only to be denied by the home team who had a period of pressure midway through the second half and equalized and the game finished with both teams trying to get the win but finished all square and the Saints denied an away victory on the road as both teams shared the points on the day.

Hopefully the Saints can put in a another positive, determined performance like then and secure some much need points against a strong, competitive Harborough team that are pushing to get themselves in to the play off positions.

Last week the team put in a lot of effort to secure a valuable point in a 1-1 draw against a Gresley Rovers side just a few places above us and it’s vitally important we keep putting in strong performances and get ourselves in a safer league position and secure Step 4 football for next season.

We wish Pete and the lads all the very best today and I know they will recieve the very best support from you all to help drive them on to success today.

As it had been seven days earlier St Neots looked far more comfortable kicking down the slope after half time. Another Lee free kick brought a good save from home keeper Bradley Catlow and Jay Davies playing behind Simon Thomas was beginning to find space and he also tested Catlow after clever approach play.St Neots then decided to exploit their great freedom sending on Shane Tolley and moving Davies to the right flank.Their best move came midway through the second half when Ryam Frater broke up a Redditch attack and found Ben Farrell who ran from the half way line beating two players but seeing his shot blocked. Redditch utilising their pacey front runners always looked dangerous on the break but they were beginning to tire quickly although there was some concern when Dean Cracknell handled to concede a free kick in a dangerous position but Flanagan’s rising free kick was pushed away by Abbey and cleared. Another Lee free kick was blocked by the defence and St Neots could have stolen all three points at the death when Cracknell found Ed Adjei clear on the right but off balance he skied his shot high over the bar. The point was sufficient to lift St Neots above Truro and Frome who are two of their next four league opponents.

Our two sides met for the first time at Harborough in October when it finished honours even at a goal apiece. Like us, Harborough are in their debut season in the Northern League Midlands Division but unlike us who arrived here on transfer, our visitors won their way to Step Four for the first time in their brief history by winning the United Counties League Premier Division South championship last season.

FINAL UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH TABLE 2021/22 SEASON

The number of goals scored and conceded illustrates how much they deserved their promotion to this level, and they have not disappointed currently sitting in eighth place just sixpointsshyofaplay-offplace.WhenourtwoclubsmetatHarboroughinOctobertheresult was a 1-1 draw with a Trey Charles goal giving us a first half lead before a penalty goal late in the game earned our hosts their point. Away from home Harborough have won at Cambridge City, Corby, and Daventry (all without conceding a goal) plus victories at Shepshed and Sutton Coldfield so they travel well. Harborough had a busy time in National Cup competition this season. In their first year in the FA Trophy they defeated Bedworth (away) and Shepshed (home)beforelosingtohighergradedBasfordUnitedinapenaltyshoot-out,andintheFACup they featured in five matches beating Boston Town in an extra-preliminary round replay before victories over Bottesford Town (home) and Lye Town (away) but eventually losing to highergradedAlvechurchUnited.

This was Harborough’s first season in the competition – and their last for at least some time, because their promotion to Step Four next season debars their entry! However, they made themostoftheirmomentbythrashingfellowUCLPremierDivisionSouthrivalsPottonUnited thanks to three second half goals after a tight first 45 minutes. Already crowned League Champions this has been a memorable season for them as the first Leicestershire winners of thisprestigiouscompetition. Theyalsoboastedastrikerwithapersonalhattrick–thefirstin the competition for many years. This was Potton’s first appearance in a Hinchingbrooke Final since2005andtheycompetedwellbuthadtosettlefortherunners-upmedals.

InthreeoftheirlastfourmatchesStNeotshaveledbyagoaltonilatthebreak yet have only gone on to win one of them. They returned from Harborough with a point that was welcome but if they had capitalised on their chances, it could have been all three.They were much the better side on the first half but had to withstand a lot of second half pressure as the home side hit back with a vengeance. Once again with the injury jinx forcing team changes, St Neots had skipper Callum Anderson and striker Robbie Mason missing from their starting line-up but Manny Osei, Andre Hasanally and Patrick Campbell returned to the side with Theo Sackey-Mensah on the bench. There was also a welcome return as substitute, for temporary Cambridge United loanee Mamadou Jobe coming backfrominjurythathadcurtailedhisloantoahighergradedclub. His second half introduction for the injured Alex Solomon saw St Neots defence assume a confidencethathadbeenmissingforawhile.

St Neots adopted a positive approach to the game and apart from a seventh minute volley by Dan Forbes confidently handled by Jamie Greygoose, St Neots looked the better side. Andre Hasanally had two shots from outside the area well saved by home keeper Elliott Taylor and the visitors’ front two Trey Charles and Manny Osei kept the home defence on their toes. St Neots took the lead on 21 minutes when Charles won the ball wide on the right to bring Osei into the attack and his cross was spilled by Taylor and Charles took full advantage darting between defenders to put his side in front. Restricted to attacking on the break the home sides’ best first half chance came in time added at the end of the first half when a Gary Mulligan corner found the head ofDanForbes,buthiseffortsailedwelloverthebar. Thesecondperiodsawmorescoringchancesatbothends. WithJobeonforthe limping Alex Solomon St Neots looked more assured in defence and following a set piece after 55 minutes defender Toib Adeyemi went clear, but his narrow angledshotreboundedoffthegoalkeeper’slegstobecleared.

Harborough had reshaped their side after the break and they looked more threatening in attack with Nat Ansu firing wide after a defensive slip and from a Rhys Hoenes corner, substitute Rhys Kelly sent an unchallenged header over the crossbar.Saleem Akanbi set up Charles with a penetrating through ball, but Taylor saved with his feet and at the other end Jamie Greygoose did well to save a Dom Wysocki header from a Hoenes free kick.After 77 minutes from another Hoenes set-up Kelly was again off target with a header but the home pressure paid off eleven minutes from time when Ansu sprinted into the penalty area to be brought down by a combination of two defenders and from the penalty spot James Ireland levelled the scores. Both sides tried hard to find a winning goal but now both defences seemed determined to give nothing awayandthesideshadtosettleapointapiece.

Gresley remain five points ahead of St Neots in the guaranteed safety position in the bottom five of the table after this rather pallid drawn encounter. It was a very poor contest with St Neots again taking the lead but unable to hold on for victory. The visitors who had failed to score in their last five matches were boosted by an outstanding goal struck from 25 yards by visiting defender Dominic Perkins after the home side had failed to clear a corner, giving St Neots debutant keeper Tom Finch no chance. St Neots may have shaded possession in the second half but created few genuine chances with the visiting defence holding firm. Now with time running out St Neots need six more points than Gresley from their remaining nine matches to guarantee Step Four survival next season although they may find a way back via the play-offs. In a bid to boost his side Manager Pete Gill made five changes to his starting line-up, but it turned out to little effect. Temporary goalkeeper James Goff had been recalled by St Ives so Cambridge United loanee Tom Finch took over in goal; Brandon Njoku was unavailable, and Liam Smyth, Jon-Paul Duncliffe and Dan Barton were all left on the bench. Into their places came Tommy Boxer to boost the defence, Liam Hook after injury, Manny Osei and new signing Albert Adu.

The visitors began more brightly and inside ninety seconds in Gresley’s first attack, James Spruce tumbled in collision with Tom Finch and it looked as though Referee Mario Stetakovic had awarded the visitors a penalty but after consultation with his Assistant, a goal kick was given. The same visiting player then fired over the bar and in St Neots’ first attack Trey Charles saw a fierce shot parried and then cleared. Then after 13 minutes St Neots took the lead when a Liam Hook corner was not cleared, and Trey Charles pounced to claim his twentieth league goal of the season from close range. St Neots continued to have the better of the attacking play as Hook brought a good save from Lewis Fenney and debutant Albert Adu off-balance shot wide. A lengthy effort from Lewis Belgrave brought a good save from Tom Finch and then in a midfield flare-up Panny Boxer and Bekir Halil found their names noted in the Referee’s notebook. Although St Neots were having the better of possession, they created little to seriously test the visiting defence and then two minutes before the break against the run of play, St Neots failed to clear a corner and from 25yards Dominic Perkins produced a crisp left footed shot that beat the St Neots custodian to level the scores at half time.

St Neots began the second half brightly and in a swift move on 51 minutes Callum Anderson played Osei clear of the visiting defence, but his net bound shot was turned around for a corner. The same St Neots player had another effort well gathered by Fenney and the visitors then reshaped their side sending on two substitutes. This gave their attacking efforts more momentum, but the St Neots defence well marshalled by Tommy Boxer held firm. Midway through the second half St Neots thought they had a penalty when Charles was brought down in the area by two defenders but the Referee was unconvinced and for questioning the decision, St Neots skipper Callum Anderson was booked.St Neots then introduced Dan Barton for Osei and although he looked lively, he was easily stopped by uncompromising defenders. With defence the keyword for both sides the match ended in stalemate with the visitors very happy with their point.

HARBOROUGH TOWN FC HISTORY

Harborough Town F.C is the realisation of the merger of Harborough Town Juniors, Harborough Town Spencers and Harborough Minis in 2007, which created one club for all ages, gender and ability for the Market Harborough community. We are based in Market Harborough, where our impressive facilities cater for all of the club’s teams. The club became an FA Charter Standard Club in 2004 and through consistent development has achieved FA Charter Standard Community Club status which is the highest accolade currently available and recognizes best practice, ongoing development and a positive impact within the local community. The club currently has teams that include Minis, Girls, Junior, Youth, Ladies, Inclusive, Senior, Veteran and Walking Football sides.

Harborough Town Juniors was formed in 1975, running teams from U11 to U16. After initially playing at Symington’s, they developed facilities on Northampton Road in the 1990s. However, there was a desire to have senior football for the youngsters to move on to, and consequently they formed links with Spencers United, and in 2007 they merged with Harborough Town Spencers, as they had become called. In the early 2000s Harborough Minis had been formed to cater for U11s, and in 2007 they also joined the merger to create Harborough Town FC.

After three seasons in the Northants Combination, managed by Andy ‘Stan’ Wilson, the club won promotion to the United Counties League. On 14 August 2010 Market Harborough witnessed the return of UCL football for the first time since Symington’s FC’s last game in 1954, and by 2012 ‘The Bees’, as they had become known, had won promotion to the UCL Premier Division.

In the early years of HTFC the Northampton Road ground had seen much improvement, with a new clubhouse, first team pitch, two stands and a 3G artificial pitch. The Bowden’s Park ground had become a fine ground, but in 2018 the installation of a Class 1 artificial pitch (3G), funded by Market Harborough District Council, a Stadium Improvement Grant and the Football Foundation, saw the creation of The Harborough Town Community Football Ground, but known as The Beehive. This was opened on 1 November 2018 with a game against an FA Representative XI.

The senior side made steady progress in the UCL and the two aborted Covid-19 seasons saw us have good starts, reflecting the clubs on field progress. In 2020 experienced UCL manager Mitch Austin joined the club and immediately changed the mindset to a much more professional one. After 10 years of steady progress at Step 5 HTFC’s ambitions win the FA Pyramid were met when we won the UCL Premier Division South in 2022, amassing an amazing 102 points. We also won the UCL Champions Cup and the Hinchingbrooke Cup.

MITCH AUSTIN, Manager: an exciting young manager who has managed in the United Counties League at Sileby Rangers and Rothwell Corinthians and was Assistant Manager at Kettering Town and St Ives Town, who he joined ‘The Bees’ from in October 2020. His brilliant player recruitment and leadership last season led us to the UCL Premier Division South title and the UCL’s Champions Trophy. UCL Manager of the Season.

ELLIOT TAYLOR, goalkeeper: an excellent all round keeper, who is quick off his line; in his third season at the club Ever present last season and voted as best Step 5 goalkeeper in season 2021/22.

JAKE WILLIAMS, goalkeeper: a young keeper of great promise who has risen through the ranks at Brooke House Academy, also working with Burton Albion.

DAN COOPER, full back: one of three players that Mitch brought to the club from Rothwell Corinthians, he is powerful, raiding, consistent full back, with an amazing long throw.

SPENCER EDWARDS, full back a quick, play anywhere player who enjoys being a full back. Joined in the summer from Aylestone Park after an impressive season.

BEN WILLIAMS, central defender: our goal scoring, dominating centre half and captain. He has played over 300 senior games for the club having been a junior with us. Voted as best Step 5 defender in season 2021/22.

SAM PRESTON, central defender: one of our powerful and dominating centre halves who is in his fourth season at ‘The Bees’. Overcame a nasty injury to be a key part of the promotion side last season.

PAUL MALONE, central defender: a hugely impressive and experienced quality defender who dominates in both boxes and scores goals. Joined the club from Peterborough Sports and previously with Corby town and Kettering Town

SIDIK ATCHA, central defender: a talented yet player who has impressed everyone who has come in contact with him. He arrives from Corby Town and is dual signed with Nuneaton Borough

GARY MULLIGAN, defender/midfield: joined the club from Corby Town last season and was a valuable acquisition for the run in; an experienced defender/holding midfield player who played 150 games for Kettering Town.

RHYS KELLY, defender/midfield: a quality young defensive player, who is quick and reads the game well. A great acquisition for ‘The Bees’ last season from Wellingborough Town.

JOSH WALSH, midfield: he has come through the ranks at ‘The Bees’ and now in his fifth season. A versatile, quality midfield player, who led with assists last season. Club Player of the Season 2021/22.

DANNY SETCHELL, midfield: an experienced player who has recently joined ‘The Bees’ from Bedford Town. He has played at a higher level and offers the club quality in midfield.

JOEL CARTA, midfield: brilliant signing last season, scoring 14 goals from his attacking midfield role as well loads of assists. Previously played for Kettering Town and Corby Town.

DODZI AGBENU, midfield/attack: another of the Rothwell Corinthians signings for last season, he is a strong running, skilful and goal scoring midfield/striker.

JAMES IRELAND, midfield/attack: joined the club in 2020 from Corby Town, he was an all action, goal scoring midfielder who converted to striker last season, scoring 21 UCL goals.

RHYS HOENES, midfield/attack: another of Mitch’s great signings during last season, proving to be a quick and tricky goal scoring forward. He scored 22 goals in Kettering Town’s Southern League Championship side on 2019.

ETHAN JOHNSTON, striker: a recent addition to the squad, Ethan joins us from St Ives Town. Having served his apprenticeship at Northampton Town he moved to Banbury Town. He is quick with an eye for goal.

DAVID GBEHE, striker: a recent from Coventry United, he is a quick and lively addition to the squad.

NAT ANSU, striker: a crucial signing from Cogenhoe United at the beginning of last season. A quick striker who can play anywhere up top and scored 26 goals.

DAN FORBES, defender/midfield/attack: a versatile player who can play anywhere, he who works hard and scores vital goals. He is beginning his ninth season at the club.

DOMINIK WYSOCKI, midfield/attack – a young striker from Kettering who adds depth to our attack and will develop rapidly during the season; can play anywhere across the front line.
