"’A massive welcome to our visitors March Town for this encounter in which I have no doubt will be an interesting spectacle. March are a side who will expect promotion this season after a couple of near misses over the past few seasons. They have a manager who sets his team up a certain way and after resigning and returning to the job, I have no doubt he will target promotion”.
This is already the second time we have met which seems crazy in October, but the reverse fixture was a close encounter but edged by March on the night. It’s always a difficult place to go on a Tuesday night and we didn’t quite hit the levels we needed and they took their chances. They move the ball well but also can be quite direct into their forwards. We have no doubt how tough a test this is. When we met on the 17th September, we went about 7 points behind them so now to be above them with a game in hand speaks volumes for our recent run. I know they will be eager to jump above us today with us knowing victory will open a gap up between ourselves and them even at this early stage of the season. Since my last notes we have been on a good run winning 5 on the bounce and unbeaten in 7. Having come through some big tests such as Lutterworth Town and Saturday, even though they are bottom of the league GNG Oadby, the small bobbly pitch makes it a leveller and it’s hard to control the game, so I was really pleased to come away with 3 points.
A huge thanks to all the home and away support this season it’s been huge and is much appreciated by myself and the players. I hope to see as many saints fans as possible at the game as your support is always massive and I know it gives the boys the extra push and you’re our 12th player on the day.

March have been in a rich vein of form like ourselves and this should be a good contest as always between two competitive teams looking to maintain their fine form and keep on the front foot and stay in touch with the leading teams.
Saints have had a run of away games recently and put in some hard fought and solid performances to secure valuable points to stay in touch with the top teams and maintain the momentum and have shown the consistency needed to be in contention with top performers to-date.

A goal in the second minute of time added on at the end of normal time gave St Neots their first ever away Southern League victory in the opening four days of the new season at Woodford. The victory was deserved because on the full ninety minutes St Neots were clearly the better side having dominated the opening 45 minutes. However, after the break they conceded a very careless goal that put the host side back in the match and this had a significant effect on both their confidence and performance and only sheer perseverance proved the match winner.It was the typical ‘match of two halves’ because when the sides went off for the break St Neots could have been several goals in front rather than just the one but to their great credit Woodford upped their game and in the second half gave their visitors a torrid time without really threatening to score goals. Under scrutiny the St Neots defence coped well, and this included the return to the side after his one match suspension of skipper Lewis Webb who was slotted in at right back in place of Craig Grieve.
Unlike their first match St Neots were quickly into their stride on a very difficult surface. Dan Jacob headed over, Junior Konadu saw a net bound shot blocked, and Shane Tolley will have been disappointed to chip wide of goal after being played through by Konadu. Little was seen of the Woodford attack as St Neots utilised their superior possession to create a stream of chances and midway through the first half Dan Jacob had a clear sight of goal but shot over and Stefan Moore found himself clear but shot across the face of goal. Lewis Hilliard also should have scored but tight to the bye line he screwed his effort across goal. It was 28 minutes before St Neots keeper Michael Duggan was called into significant action when Neil Mackenzie was dispossessed and he had to leave his area to clear from the onrushing Glen Hawkins. Moore was orchestrating most of St Neots better moves and he cleverly set up Jacob but his tamely hit finish was cleared off the line by Ross Harris.The only first half goal came just four minutes before the break, but it was well worth waiting for. Surrounded by defenders Shane Tolley lifted the ball over defenders to the edge of the six yards box and Stefan Moore’s diagonal run saw him collect the ball and slip it past the surprised Matt Finlay.

HPotential disaster came two minutes after the restart for with no real danger threatened a mishit shot by Ricky Johnson was misjudged by the underworked visiting keeper Michael Duggan and the ball squirmed past him to roll slowly into the net to level the scores. That incident transformed the match for both teams.St Neots’ confidence looked badly shot and Woodford seeing a glimmer of hope raised their performance and began to dominate. However, they created few clear openings as Chris Hope and Jordan Gent defended stoutly and for a long period a draw looked the certain outcome. St Neots created just a couple of clear second half chances with Lewis Hilliard firing over the bar from a very promising position and Junior Konadu who looked out of touch after his first half showing bringing the save of the match from Finlay who did well to push his pile driving effort over the crossbar. St Neots made the one late substitute introducing Will Fordham for the tiring Duran Reynolds, but they did try to raise their game in the final ten minutes.However they could have lost it in 88th minute when Glen Hawkins went clear of a square lying defence and looked certain to bag a winning goal for Woodford but Duggan made amends for his earlier howler with an inspired save and three minutes later Konadu, Webb and Hilliard were all involved in the match winning move with Neil Mackenzie coolly picking his spot past the unsighted Finlay to claim the winning goal.

GOOD EVENING AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR LOCAL VISITORS
This is to be the fifth meeting of our two sides in just 14 months after it had taken almost 140 years for our sides to meet in serious competition. At the moment after four meetings the tally stands at two victories apiece and we meet this evening with both teams hoping to further their hopes of advancement up the football pyramid at the end of the season. At the time these notes were penned our visitors were second in the league table three points behind leaders Aylestone Park but having played one game more, but if our lads win tonight the sides will swap places so the incentive is plain. It is interesting to note that if the two sides reach the semi-finals of the Hinchingbrooke Cup this season there will be a further meeting of the two sides at March but before then both have to negotiate quarter-final matches. March joined the UCL in the 2022/23 season from the Thurlow Nunn league and finished a very creditable seventh. Last season they finished fifth, one place below our lads but like us suffered a semi-final playoff defeat beaten by Racing Club Warwick who went on to gain promotion to Step Four. March are draw specialists having finished all square in five of their thirteen completed matches. In the FA Cup they were beaten 3-1 at Newmarket in the extra-preliminary round whilst in the FA Vase they beat Dussindale Rovers from Norwich before beating Mulbarton United of the Thurlow Nunn League in the second qualifying round.Last Saturday they travelled to Coggeshall Town of the Essex Senior League in the first round proper (result not known when these notes were penned).

St Neots leapfrogged visiting Lutterworth Town with a strong second half performance to move into the play-off zone in the league table for the first time this season. Although they were a goal behind at the break a seven minutes’ spell after half time saw the home side score three times to claw back the initiative from their visitors and from that point on there was only going to be one winner. Assistant Manager Steve Kuhne declared that it was one of his sides’ best performances this season against the visitors who are having their best-ever start at this level. In the first half giant visiting goalkeeper Warren Butlin broke the hearts of the home forwards as he dominated his penalty area denying them several gilt-edged openings and the transformation in the shape of the game came after home Manager Cameron Mawer introduced substitute Rhys Thorpe. He had been unavailable for the last two matches and was named on the bench but within five minutes of his introduction he kick-started St Neots’ recovery with a well taken goal, before adding a second seven minutes later. The Manager had named almost an unchanged line up merely preferring Charlie Bowen in defence for Dammy Nickels with skipper Robbie Parker moving to full back. In a frustrating first half St Neots better efforts were rebuffed after their visitors had started well.In the opening seven minutes they won three corners and from the third the home defence only survived thanks to a goal line clearance. At the other end Harvey Williams saw a net bound shot deflected and visiting keeper Warren Butler produced a full length save to deny Kieran Barnes. Louis Samuels almost scored with a crisp effort that James Goff only saved at his second attempt and as St Neots responded Connor Furlong only found the side netting. Then, after 23 minutes, the visitors went ahead as Louis Samuels wove his way through the home defence to net. Robbie Parker tested the visiting keeper and late in the first half both Furlong and Williams had net bound efforts blocked by the determined visiting defence. In first half time added James Hatch saw a header well saved by Butler as the visitors clung on to their narrow advantage.

St Neots came out with all guns firing after the break and with Thorpe on for Hatch they took the game to their visitors. After 52 minutes James Goff was penalised and booked for bringing down Abdul Sunmonu and a penalty was awarded but the home keeper redeemed himself as he saved Samuels’ poorly struck spot kick. Two minutes later St Neots were back in the game as Rhys Thorpe netted a Charlie Bowen head back from a Barnes corner, and two minutes later from another corner Connor Furlong provided the finishing touch to put St Neots ahead. The icing on the cake came just five minutes later when Rhys Thorpe moved inside the visiting defence to pick up a Furlong through pass and beat the advancing keeper to give St Neots their comfortable two goals cushion. Both keepers then made significant saves as the two sides strove for dominance, but St Neots always looked likely winners stroking the ball about confidently with Bowen heading off the line for St Neots and Williams twice going close to extending the lead. Several substitutions by both sides saw the match end tamely but the home side were worthy victors.

Three convincing home victories in their last three outings have propelled St Neots up to fourth place in the league table but the challenge now is to reproduce that form on the road if they are to sustain their challenge to the league leaders. Histon were a side in good form with four wins and a draw in their previous five league and cup matches but a stunning first half performance by the hosts put them in a commanding position. After the break the visitors hit back strongly but the resolute St Neots defence held firm to take the points. St Neots opted for just one team change from the weekend with striker Rhys Thorpe preferred to James Hatch. Histon meantime included four previous St Neots players in their line up in a game played on a wet pitch after a pre-match downpour.
St Neots got off to the perfect start when after just three minutes the speedy Harvey Williams rounded his marker to cross for Michael Amaeshike to score from close range. However, the visitors were quick to respond because just two minutes later Connor Barnes was put clear on the right and his angled finish beat the advancing James Goff to level the scores. The match continued at a fast and furious pace and visiting striker Barnes could have doubled his personal tally eight minutes later when his pace engineered his opening, but he shot wide. St Neots responded with man of the match Connor Furlong leaving his marker in his wake to set up Rhys Thorpe. but his finish was too high.Then after 21 minutes St Neots regained the lead when a long clearance from Goff deceived the back peddling visiting defence and Kieran Barnes scored his tenth goal of the season from a narrow angle. After the break the match took a different pattern. The visiting side regrouped and adopted a more attacking approach and St Neots were forced to defend in numbers. The lively Connor Barnes was a constant threat to the home defence, and he should have put his side back in the game after 63 minutes when clear on goal, but he dragged his finish wide of target. Histon substitute Taylor Franklin also had a great chance to reduce the arrears after 70 minutes put clear by Luke Young, but he fired wildly over the bar. St Neots looked dangerous on the break and substitute Sam Willis was close to increasing the lead after more excellent work by Furlong but visiting keeper George Whitehall saved at full length. With nine minutes remaining St Neots could have put the result beyond doubt when the lively Barnes set up Furlong, but his net bound effort was deflected for a corner. From another corner Willis almost extended the St Neots lead but Whitehall produced the save of the match at full stretch to keep his sides’ fading hopes of some reward alive.
Furlong had yet another effort blocked by the tiring visiting defence and the match ended in some disarray with visiting skipper Max York sent off in time added.

This was St Neots first visit to Fernie Fields for 30 years having been beaten 4-1 in the League KO Cup on their last visit in October 1996, so this was appropriate revenge. The result extended St Neots’ current winning run to four matches and cemented their position in the play-off places in the league table four points behind leaders Aylestone Park but with a match in hand. Manager Cameron Mawer named an unchanged line-up for the first time since early August but made two second half substitutions. Sileby were a side in form having won three and drawn two of their last six league matches and St Neots had to be at their best after the break to return home with all three points. They also had man-of-the-match goalkeeper James Goff to thank for some vital saves both before they had scored and whilst they boasted only a one goal advantage over their hosts.
The first half was a cagey affair with both sides able to produce some impressive possession football without serious testing the opposition goalkeeper. In the first twenty minutes there were only two serious attempts on goal – Rob Parker releasing Rhys Thorpe on goal, but home keeper Dean Love saved well, and a long-range effort by Harvey Williams that flew wide.Gradually the contest opened-up with home striker Kenzie Cross testing James Goff, and at the other end Love was again in action bravely saving at the feet of Williams. A three-man St Neots move ended with Thorpe just off target, and Connor Furlong tested the home keeper after neat work by Mike Amaeshike. The tireless Thorpe shot across the face of goal after being played clear and the half ended with Sileby striker Nathan Burrows seeing his shot rebound from a post to be cleared,

The second half began with the home side on the offensive and St Neots had to funnel back and defend. Goff saved bravely at the feet of Lamin Jammeh and a searching cross by Josh Drain was cleared off the St Neots goal line. Another important save by Goff heralded a change in the pattern of play as the visitors began once again to string together their passes. On the hour an incisive break forward saw Kieran Barnes break down the left before pulling the ball back for Connor Furlong to thunder his shot past the home keeper to give St Neots the lead. Sileby replied with Burrows testing Goff and then the keeper kept the visitors ahead with a full length save to deny Drain. St Neots sent on Sam Willis for Williams and created several promising openings thwarted only by the offside flag. However, in the last ten minutes St Neots took full advantage as the host side appeared to flag. Hard-working Rhys Thorpe eventually slipped the offside trap collecting a lengthy clearance to add the second goal and the icing on the cake for the visitors came in the final minute when substitute Sam Willis was set up by Amaeshike for St Neots’ third goal.

St Neots recorded their biggest Hinchingbrooke Cup victory in modern times equalling their 8-2 home demolition of Royston Town in 2011. Lower graded Huntingdon Town never gave up trying and were rewarded with a late consolation goal. Cameron Mawer’s side now go on to face the winners of the Potton United and Letchworth Garden City at home in the quarter final. The Manager made four changes in the starting line-up giving some valuable match time to several fringe players, including Danny Baulk and man of the match, birthday boy, Scott Joseph, both of whom responded with a brace of goals apiece.
The home side made a brave start testing visiting keeper James Goff twice in the opening ten minutes but once St Neots found their rhythm with their revised line-up they began to dominate. The lively Danny Baulk starting for just the second time this season opened the scoring after 14 minutes from a long throw in by Murphy Culkin and three minutes later defender Charlie Bowen added the second from a Culkin corner and it was was 3-0 after 28 minutes when Danny Baulk produced the best of the visitors’ gals with a cracking finish. Seven minutes before the break the impressive Michael Amaeshike added the fourth goal from a Kieran Barnes free kick and on the stroke of half time Rob Parker scored his first goal of the season with a fifth goal through a packed defence following a corner that was not cleared.
Despite the mounting deficit the home side refused to capitulate, and Ian King tested the underworked Goff but after 54 minutes Scott Joseph added the sixth goal after a goalkeeping error. Joseph then added a seventh goal just past the hour and after a series of substitutions by both sides Sam Willis added his goal to complete the visitors’ scoring. Seven minutes from time Huntingdon got the reward of a late consolation goal as they refused to be totally dominated.

St Neots exploded into life after the break to bang in three goals in an eight minutes’ period to lift themselves up to second place in the league table. However, the first 45 minutes had been a nervy affair with the visitors unable to turn superior possession into goals against a stubborn home defence. GNG Oadby are bottom of the table with just two wins from their twelve completed league matches prior to this meeting but from the off they looked a resilient outfit competent to test St Neots’ impressive run of league form. Eventually the comfortable 3-0 margin extended St Neots record in league and cup to six wins and a draw in their last seven outings - four of which have been away from home. Now they face the two clubs directly above and below them in the league in consecutive matches - one at home and the other away. For this match Manager Cameron Mawer was forced into two team changes from the previous league match, with Chris Tavernier and Harvey Williams both unavailable so into the side came Sam Willis and Danny Baulk, the latter for his first league start this season.
Both sides made a cautious start defending well without seriously testing the opposing defence and in the opening 15 minutes the attacking tally was just two unsuccessful St Neots corners. Then Mike Amaeshike sent Rhys Thorpe clear of the home defence, but his low shot was blocked by a back peddling defender. Then, from a Kieran Barnes corner, Thorpe won the ball but headed over before Danny Baulk had a lengthy effort comfortable saved. St Neots then lost injured defender Nathan George who was replaced by 16 years old substitute Robbie Sutherland who slotted in impressively at full back with skipper Robbie Parker moving into central defence. Little was seen of the home attack although Lottredge Mutera sent a free kick from a dangerous position high over the bar. In the final five minutes before the break, Connor Furlong spurned two good openings for the visitors – first cutting in to shoot narrowly over the bar and then shooting wide of the far post.

The first twenty minutes after the break saw a different St Neots side in action. They dominated play pinning the home side back in their half and creating chances almost every time they went forward. Furlong tested home keeper Adam Binks from distance and then Thorpe went clear but shot across the face of goal from a narrow angle. Then, after 57 minutes, Kieran Barnes was felled as he burst into the penalty area, and he picked himself up to open the scoring from the penalty spot. Sixty seconds later he was upended once again – this time just outside the area but from that free kick he sent the ball over the crossbar. Six minutes after the opening goal the score was doubled as Amaeshike sent Rhys Thorpe clear through a square lying home defence and this time he made no mistake with a confident finish past the advancing goalkeeper. After 65 minutes it was 3-0 when the lively Sam Willis danced through the home defence to cross for a simple close-range tap-in for Connor Furlong. Both sides then made a series of substitutions including a total of six in the final fifteen minutes leading to little positive attacking play by either side and St Neots seemed happy to keep possession without seriously further testing the home goal.

March Town played on several grounds in the early 1880’s before sharing a ground with March Town Cricket Club at The Avenue. March Town played there until after the war.
As founder members of the Isle of Ely Football League, March played in that League until joining the Peterborough & District League.
After the war they added `United’ to the Clubs’ title, reflecting the move to the GER sports ground in Robingoodfellows Lane.
After an unsuccessful spell in the United Counties League, March appointed ex- Norwich City and Notts County player, Oscar Hold as Manager and after two seasons won the UCL Championship.
In the 1955-56 season, March joined the Eastern Counties League and finished runners-up to Peterborough United Reserves. They finished runners-up to Spurs `A’ in the 1960-61 season but had to wait until the 1987-88 season to lift the Championship.
March have won the League Cup once, beating Spurs 3-2 in a two-leg final, with the second leg being played at White Hart Lane.
The Hares have reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup twice, going out to Brentford 4-0 in the 1956-57 season and more recently losing 2-0 at Swindon (1977-78 season). They have jointly held the East Anglian cup with Barking in 1953-54.
In 2024 March Town United beat Blackstones to win the Hinchinbrooke Cup Final.
March Town now runs three senior sides and a Ladies Team. The 1st team play in the United Counties League South, whilst the Reserves, A Team and Ladies teams play in the Cambridgeshire Leagues.
March Town also has a thriving Youth set up, with the under 18’s playing in the Thurlow Nunn League.
