BLAST FROM THE PAST

AFC Kempston 0 St Neots 7

St Neots powered their way to their biggest ever away Premier Division victory at the expense of a poor Kempston side. Four goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half swamped the home side after a first half in which St Neots scored twice but never looked fully on song. It was a game to remember for midfielder Chris Garwell making his debut as a substitute for the injured David Fisk for he scored twice and looked a very useful addition to the squad. Kempston were poorly organised and mounted little threat to a well drilled St Neots defence managing only a couple of serious attempts on goal in the full ninety minutes.

From the start it looked like being a fairly comfortable evening for the visitors. Inside the first two minutes Arin Fehmi shot wide and Ryan Francis had a header tipped away by Lewis Rust at full stretch and then Ivan Finch had a well placed header diverted on to the cross bar. The first goal came on the quarter hour when a challenge by John Clarke was deemed dangerous and Ryan Francis appeared to miss hit his penalty kick but it was pushed into the net by the unfortunate Kempston keeper. Kempston’s best effort of the match came after 22 minutes when Gary Higgins burst past the last defender and brought a good save low at his near post by Martyn Patching. The pressure continued on the Kempston goal and after 28 minutes a shot by Barrington Belgrave was blocked but Arin Fehmi followed up to claim his first goal for St Neots. A careless back pass by Kevin Ashby almost let in James Cooper but Patching saved well and then St Neots had to make a first half change five minutes before the break introducing Chris Garwell for the injured David Fisk.

The second half exploded into life when from an Ashley Deverall corner Ashby had a fierce shot blocked by a defender and Tony Russell followed up to score from close range. Kempston brought on two substitutes in a bid to stem the tide but just before the hour the unlucky Belgrave saw a shot hit a post but Ryan Francis was on hand to tuck away the rebound and extend the lead to 4-0.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

He was then denied a hat trick when another shot rebounded from the woodwork but St Neots were now relentless and with the Kempston defence becoming more and more ragged Chris Garwell struck twice in as many minutes scoring first with a volley and then with a simple tap in when a Francis shot rebounded from a defender. At that stage a cricket score looked likely but just one more goal came three minutes from time when a cross from the overlapping Mark Barry was diverted into his own net by John Clarke.

St Neots: Patching, Hoggett, Barry, Russell, Ashby, Finch, Fisk, Deverall, Belgrave, Francis, Fehmi.

Subs: Garwell (for Fisk 40 mins), Kuhne (for Fehmi 61 mins), Watts (for Russell 67 mins), Lawes & Osborne.

Scorers: Ryan Francis 2 (15 & 58 mins), Chris Garwell 2 (66 & 68 mins), Arin Fehmi (28 mins), Tony Russell (47 mins), John Clarke OG (87 mins).

GOOD AFTERNOON AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR LEICESTERSHIRE VISITORS

Earlier this year on 17th February Lutterworth Town visited the Premier Plus Stadium for the first time when our two sides shared the points in a 2-2 draw. After a competitive but goalless first half all the action came after the break with our visitors twice taking the lead. Rhys Thorpe pulled back a first equaliser from a Murphy Culkin free kick and after our visitors had led for the second time before Jordan Brown scored a late second goal to ensure that the points were shared. Earlier last season when our two sides had met for the first time at Lutterworth our lads had run out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Harvey Williams, James Hatch and substitute Israel Ajana. At the end of the season our lads featured in the promotion play-offs losing away in a penalty shoot-out at Aylestone Park whilst our visitors finished in twelfth place – four places better than in the previous season. However, they arrive here today sitting fifth - in the play-off zone of the league table – two points ahead of our lads although we still have two matches in hand. In the FA Cup this season Lutterworth came from behind at half time to beat Studley 3-2 at home in the extrapreliminary round before losing away to higher graded BelperTown. In the FA Vase they trounced Pinchbeck 6-1 at home in the first qualifying round but bowed out in the next round at Coalville Town in a midweek replay after their first attempt on the previous Saturday had been abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. They still retain an interest in the League KO Cup being drawn at home to West Bridgford next Saturday. Last season they defeated Clifton All Whites in the preliminary round of that competition before losing away at Wellingborough Town.

GOOD EVENING AND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO THE PREMIER PLUS STADIUM TO OUR NEAR NEIGHBOURS

Although our two clubs are just eighteen miles apart, this is to be only the second league meeting here at St Neots. Histon’s first league visit here was on 30th December last year when we witnessed a close encounter with our lads picking up all three points from a narrow 3-2 victory. After an hour of that match, we appeared to be cruising courtesy of a 3-0 lead, thanks to goals from Magloire Myembe, Harvey Williams and Rhys Thorpe but then had to cling on as Histon hit back with two late second half goals both from James Burnside. We had met at Bridge Road earlier last season when our lads produced one of their best performances on the road running out 4-0 winners with a brace from Jordan Brown, a goal from Sam Johnson and an own goal. Histon struggled with a lack of consistency last season finishing eleventh in the final table which was disappointing after finishing sixth the previous season. In the FA Cup this season Histon bowed out at the first hurdle losing by the odd goal in three away at Stowmarket, but in the FA Vase again away at Stowmarket they gained significant revenge winning by four goals to one. They now face a trip to the seaside in ten days’ time when they visit Great Yarmouth Town in the next round. In the Sports Ground Development KO Cup last Saturday (result not known when these notes written) they entertained Eastwood from the Northern Division of the UCL, who were divisional leaders after the matches played on 29th September. Interesting to note that our U18 side played their opening Thurlow Nunn league match at Histon earlier this month when our hosts recorded a narrow 1-0 victory – they netted their penalty kick and we missed ours!

BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS (H)

28-09-2024

UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION SOUTH

ST NEOTS TOWN 5 BUGBROOKE 1

St Neots came alive in the last half hour of this match to equal their best home league victory since returning to the UCL. They knocked in four goals in the final 27 minutes of this match to cement their position just outside the play-off places but with two, three, or four games in hand over the clubs above them. This was a much-needed victory and return to form after losing four and drawing two of their last seven league and cup matches. With three regular players unavailable due to either suspension or unavailability they were glad to welcome back skipper Robbie Parker for Lil Francisco (suspended) in an otherwise unchanged line-up from the midweek draw away at ON Chenecks.

Manager Cameron Mawer had the luxury of involving all five of his nominated substitutes late in the game to afford some valuable match time to all his available players.

The first half was at times fairly pedestrian with the visiting side happy to defend in depth whilst offering little threat in attack. In fact, the only time home keeper James Goff was seriously tested was a lengthy effort by substitute Shad Reza ten minutes before the break. However, despite having much the greater share of possession, St Neots really only seriously tested visiting keeper Micky Ibberson a couple of times, with Kieran Barnes having a close range shot deflected and Connor Furlong heading wide in their better attacks. Furlong again squandered a promising opening after good work by Murphy Culkin but after a spell of sustained pressure, St Neots went ahead after 32 minutes when Kieran Barnes converted a Murphy Culkin corner to register his ninth goal of the season. Just before half time Nickels again linked with the attack to find Michael Amaeshike but his finish was too high and then the visiting keeper did well to save a James Hatch header from a Christian Tavernier cross just prior to the half time whistle.

John Walker's Match Report

BUGBROOKE ST MICHAELS (H)

The second half saw an early effort by Harvey Williams blocked on the goal line and then Tavernier sent Barnes clear, but he dragged his shot wide. On the break Isaac Redding tested the home keeper but the breakthrough came after 64 minutes when Connor Furlong picked up a James Hatch head on from a long goalkeeper clearance to finish well.At 2-0 St Neots seemed to grow in confidence and Barnes unselfishly set up the excellent Michael Amaeshike for the third St Neots goal four minutes later. Amaeshike then added his second goal of the match after 82 minutes and the match ended in a flurry of action as Bugbrooke broke away for substitute Derek Okoye to snatch a late consolation goal on the stroke of ninety minutes. There was still time for St Neots to have the last word as substitute Danny Baulk claimed St Neots’ fifth goal two minutes into added time and this performance and result will have restored some confidence to the home side who had not won at home since 24th August.

Opponent Spotlight LUTTERWORTH TOWN

The club were playing in the Lutterworth & District League at the start of the 1920s. They had joined the Leicester & District League by 1923, winning the Division Two title in 1923–24. After World War II the club joined the Rugby Junior League and were champions in 1948–49. They joined the Leicester City League, winning Division Two in 1950–51. Lutterworth joined Division Two of the Leicestershire Senior League in 1955. In 1966–67 they finished second and were promoted to Division One. The club was relegated to Division Two at the end of the 1971–72 season, but were immediately promoted back to Division One as Division Two runners-up. However, the club continued to yo-yo, being relegated in 1974–75, promoted in 1977–78, relegated in 1979–80, promoted in 1980–81 (as Division Two champions), relegated in 1982–83 (at which point Division Two was renamed Division One) and promoted back to the renamed Premier Division in 1985–86.

The 1989–90 season saw Lutterworth win the Leicestershire and Rutland Senior Cup.] They won the Premier Division title the following season. However, the club were relegated again at the end of the 1994–95 season. Despite only finishing eleventh in 1996–97 they were promoted to the Premier Division. They returned to Division One after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1999–2000. In 2015–16 the club finished third in Division One and were promoted to the Premier Division. They went on to win the Premier Division the following season and were promoted to Division One of the United Counties League. The club played at Hall Park until being displaced by Lutterworth Athletic in 2011. They then played at Coventry Road during the 2011–12 season before moving to Athletic's former ground at Dunley Way, which is owned by Harborough District Council. In 2017 the club gained permission to erect floodlights and build a 50-seat stand, allowing them to move up to the United Counties League. The floodlights were installed during the summer of 2017. A new 50-seat stand was opened by Paul Gascoigne in August 2017.

Opponent Spotlight HISTON FC

The club was formed in 1904 as Histon Institute FC, and played for 44 years in the Cambridgeshire Football League. John Chivers, chairman of major Histon employer Chivers & Sons, helped to found the football club. The company donated a field then covered in roses for the club to play on, which is commemorated in the rose on Histon’s crest. From 1926 the club moved to its current location, where a grandstand was erected in 1934. In 1948 the club became champions of the Cambs League and joined the Spartan League, winning promotion to its Premier Division in 1951. The “Institute” was dropped from the club’s name that season. The top forward in those days was Mo Thurston, who scored 63 goals in season 1949-50. In 1960 Histon entered the Delphian League, which became part of the Athenian League structure in 1963, but struggled at that level. The pitch was resited at right angles to the old one in 1960-61, and a replacement stand opened in 1964-65. In 1965 Histon switched to the Eastern Counties League, where they were to play for the next 35 years. When the ECL adopted a two-division format in 1988, Histon were placed in the Premier Division. In the 1989–90 season, with Alan Doyle as manager, Histon won the ECL League Cup and sold players Lance Key and Shaun Sowden to Sheffield Wednesday and Giuliano Maiorana to Manchester United. The transfer fee rescued the club financially, and a Manchester United team played Histon on 19 May 1989. Following administrative and financial difficulties in 1993, the club was relegated to ECL Division One in 1995 but were promoted back to the Premier Division two years later. The 1997–98 season saw Neil Kennedy establish a club record by scoring 46 senior goals in the season, and Histon finished 3rd. Finally in the 1999–2000 season Histon won the ECL Premier Division title under the management of former Cambridge United player Steve Fallon, appointed on 27 July 1999, and were promoted to the Southern League Eastern Division.

In the first three Southern League seasons Histon managed 4th spot twice and then a disappointing 10th, which momentarily halted the rise in fortunes experienced under Steve Fallon, but the 2003–04 season saw the club finish 2nd in the Eastern Division to claim promotion to the Premier Division. The following year Histon took on League Two side Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup 1st Round Proper, setting up a 2nd Round tie at home to Yeovil Town with a 2–0 victory. They lost to Yeovil, but clinched the Southern League Premier Division title on the last day of the 2004-05 season and were promoted to the Conference South.

In their first Conference South season Histon finished 5th, enough to secure a place in the play-offs for promotion to the Conference National. They won their first play-off game away at Farnborough Town 3–0, but lost 2–0 in the final against St. Albans City. In the FA Cup they reached the second round proper. The team managed a draw away at Nuneaton Borough but were defeated in the replay at Bridge Road 2–1 before a crowd of 3,077. The season was also notable for a 5–0 win against local rivals Cambridge United in the FA Trophy.

Opponent Spotlight

HISTON FC

On 14 April 2007 Histon, now popularly known as the Stutes, beat Welling United 1–0 at Bridge Road to go 19 points clear at the top of the Conference South in the final table. Two days previously, officials from the Conference had passed Bridge Road as fit for Conference National football, paving the way for promotion (the club’s fourth in 7 years) to the highest point in the non league pyramid. In the same season striker Neil Kennedy scored his 300th goal for the club with a hat-trick against Havant & Waterlooville.

Histon’s 2007-08 season in the Conference National saw the Stutes play their first televised game, Setanta broadcasting the 1–0 home win against Oxford United. Later that season the club broke their record home attendance when a crowd of 3,721 saw Histon beat Cambridge United 1–0 on 1 January 2008. Histon finished the season 7th. The club’s record goal scorer, Neil Kennedy, played his last competitive game against Forest Green Rovers on the last day of the season in a substitute appearance.

The second season of Conference National football saw the Stutes finish third, qualifying for the play-offs, where they were defeated 2–1 on aggregate by Torquay United in the semi-final. In the FA Cup Histon reached the third round, losing 2-1 at home to Championship side Swansea City, after beating League

One opposition in Swindon Town 1–0 at home in the first round, and Leeds United 1–0 at home in the second round, the first time Leeds had lost to a nonleague side. The Leeds United match was on national television, the attendance was 4,103, and the winning goal was scored by Matt Langston.

Histon’s fortunes declined after the high spots of the 2008-09 season, as the money ran out. In November 2009 Gareth Baldwin ended his 17-year tenure as chairman of the club, and in January 2010 Steve Fallon’s highly successful ten years as Histon manager came to an end. The club finished 18th in the Conference National in season 2009/10 and bottom in 2010/11. Alan Lewer, John Beck, and David Livermore served successively as managers. Histon finished their first Conference North season in 16th place and David Livermore left the club at the end of that season. Dennis Greene took over but left the Club in December 2012, to be replaced by former player Nacer Relizani assisted by the club’s youth team coach Brian Page. The duo led the team to Conference North safety on the last day of the 2012/13 season before Relizani stepped down and Page took over the top job.

Opponent Spotlight HISTON FC

Histon were now playing with a very young side largely drawn from the club’s youth structure. The 2013/14 season saw them relegated from the Conference North to the Southern Premier League. Brian Page kept them at that level in season 2014/15, securing an 18th place finish, but even the return of Steve Fallon in October 2015 could not prevent further relegation to the Southern League Division 1 Central at the end of season 2015-16. In October 2016 Fallon became Director of Football, with Lance Key returning to the club (again) this time as manager. Season 2016/17 however saw yet another relegation, back to the Eastern Counties League where it all started in the 1990’s.

After a season of adjustment in 2017-18 at the end of which the team finished 6th in the Eastern Counties League Premier Division, 2018-19 saw the club heading in the right direction again as Key lead the side to promotion claiming the league title with an impressive 14 point margin.

On returning to Step 4, the club was unexpectedly allocated a place in the Isthmian League for the first time in it’s 115 year history. After spending much of the 2019/20 season in the top half of the league’s North division, a mid-table finish looked to be on the cards before the season was curtailed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The end of the season also saw the club Chairman John Hall step down after four years in which the focus had been upon restoring community links, simplifying the ownership structure, repaying debts, cutting costs and introducing ladies teams. Under John’s leadership, youth development continued to feature high on the club’s priorities list with a clear pathway from Academy through Scholarship and into the First Team for our young players. John was succeeded by Richard Barlow, an existing Board member and longterm supporter of the club.

After the 2020/21 season was curtailed Histon FC was moved into the new Northern Premier League Midlands Division and following the on and on-field disruption caused by that move was relegated to Step 5 at the end of the 2021/22, being placed in the United Counties League Premier Division South for 2022/23. Richard Barlow had stepped down as Chairman in late 2021 and the club continued temporarily without a named Chairman until June 2022 when John Hall resumed in that role and the club welcomed a number of new directors to the board, uniting to move the club forward on and off the pitch.
