Welcome to our neighbours from Biggleswade today. We hope you all have a safe journey home. As this fixture falls so closely after the Weymouth away match, I am only able to update you on what had happened in the two games away at Bedworth and home versus Stratford. Firstly a 6-0 away win doesn’t occur too often, so we should be pleased with that especially after our first slip of the season just two days beforehand. A good night for the defenders where the home side did not muster a single shot on target, but of course the forward players get the glory, in particular both Tom Meechan and Lee Clarke who grabbed a brace apiece. Lee has been away for much of pre season due to holiday commitments,

so it was good to see him back in the starting line up and doing what he does best. Unfortunately before the Stratford game, he felt pain in his appendix again, which if you didn’t know, he had during the play off semi and final matches. It later turned out to be an inflamed appendix, so of course we didn’t dare risk him until the doctor had given him the all clear. This was a shame, as his ability in front of goal would’ve made a difference in a game in which we dominated the first half. It will be good to get him back fully fit. Against a strong wind, we restricted the visitors to just one meaningful entry into our penalty area in the first half and should’ve been in the lead. I am still convinced had we scored first it was a game we would have won comfortably, as again we had 10 shots inside the danger area to their 2. Unfortunately both of our goals conceded were very sloppy and made us chase the game.
ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V BIGGLESWADE TOWN ISSUE 04
It’s frustrating when you have been the dominant side and find yourself chasing the game, and we had to do that twice. Little wonder we began to lose our rhythm and shape, as we began chasing a match that should have been on the bag. All credit to the players for maintaining their attitude however, it was pleasing to see us equalise as well as create another couple of chances that would have been deserved and marked a great comeback. Enjoy the game and get behind the lads. Batchy

Biggleswade Town 1 - 3 St Neots Town St Neots came from behind to beat neighbours Biggleswade in the first Bank Holiday meeting of the two sides. It was excellent entertainment for the large holiday crowd and St Neots deserved their victory thanks to taking their chances as they arrived. The home side were denied a second goal by the woodwork on the stroke of half time and had that effort counted the outcome may have been different. They then had an excellent spell early in the second half but the well marshalled St Neots defence stood firm and in Adrian Sear they had the outstanding player as he supplemented his midfield role with some uncompromising defensive play. St Neots opted to leave Shane Tolley on the bench and give a first start to recent signing Ben Mackey but the diminutive striker was to make his presence felt when the two swapped roles midway through the second half. The opening phase saw a fairly even start although St Neots did create two excellent early chances. From a Dan Jacob free kick home keeper Anthony Ender did well to push a Stefan Moore back header over the bar and Ben Mackey should have opened his account for the club but sent his volley from eight yards over the bar. Biggleswade then took the lead with their first real opening after 26 minutes when a low Craig Daniel shot across goal beat Michael
PAGE 06 /
Duggan and deflected in off the far post. St Neots response was positive and eight minutes later a flighted corner by Moore was won in the air by Chris Hope and his well placed header was turned over the bar by Ender. St Neots then levelled with a contender for goal of the season after 34 minutes as Mackey played Stefan Moore away on the right and he spotted the home keeper a couple of yards off his line and sent a perfectly judged 30 yards chip over his head and under the bar to level the scores. Hope was again the key man in the air three minutes before the break when he rose to win a Rene Steer free kick to head it down for Jordan Gent to force home at the near post. The home side were unlucky not to earn an equaliser on the stroke of half time when from a similar spot to where there first goal was taken Stuart Lochhead sent a firm shot across the goal and this time it hit the same upright but rebounded into play. St Neots had to make a change at the break when Ashley Deeney reported a recurrent injury and the versatile Lewis Webb slotted in at full back. Ender pulled off another good save from Moore but with Biggleswade now snuffing out the right side threat from Pearson Mwanyongo they seemed to grow in confidence. However with still only one player up their better moves
ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V BIGGLESWADE TOWN ISSUE 04
lacked numbers in the danger area and Jordan Gent and Chris Hope always looked comfortable. Their best chance saw Brett Donnelly play Craig Daniel clear but Duggan sprinted from his line to smother the shot and the danger passed. St Neots decided it was time for a change swapping Mackey with Tolley and sending on Lewis Hilliard for Konadu. Within five minutes the move paid rich dividends as Moore bravely won the ball in a three way challenge to nod it sideways to the unmarked Shane Tolley and he confidently gave St Neots the comfort of a two goals cushion. Biggleswade responded sending on another striker but they did not manage to rediscover their positive approach enough to create meaningful chances and St Neots were able to go into cruise control to collect three important away points.
St Neots: Duggan, Deeney, Steer, Sear, Gent, Hope, Mwanyongo, Konadu, Moore, Mackey, Jacob. Subs: Webb (for Deeney 46 mins), Tolley (for Mackey 68 mins), Hilliard (for Konadu 68 mins), Avory & Henebery. Man of the Match: Adrian Sear Report: John Walker

St Neots twice came from behind to share the spoils with league new boys Stratford Town but will be disappointed with the outcome. When you have more possession and more chances than the opposition you should push home that advantage but St Neots fell short. Stratford have found their feet quickly at the higher level and looked a well organised unit and could have snatched a surprise winning goal deep into injury time but St Neots will point to a shot off the woodwork and two goal line clearances that might have earned them full points. Once again the home side were indebted to the finishing skills of Tom Meechan who claimed both goals to take his tally to eight in just five outings. The one change in the home starting line-up saw Nathan Frater back to replace Lee Clarke who failed a late fitness test. The first half was end to end but produced surprisingly few open chances. Stratford central defensive pairing of Marcel Simpson and Liam Francis looked well in control when St Neots threatened and at the other end Danny Gay never had a direct shot to bother him before the break. Nathan Frater had an early shot blocked following a Wilkinson cross and Stratford’s only early threating move saw Gay sprint from his area to clear from the feet of Edwin Ahenkora. Tom Meechan off balance shot wide and a blockbusting shot by Ryan
Hawkins was too hot for Andy Kemp to hold but a defender produced a last ditch clearance. Isaac Galliford tried his luck from the left with a cross-goal shot but Adkins cleared off the line and at the other end Ahenkorah fired into the side netting after Stratford’s best first half attack. Just before the break St Neots carved out two more chances but Meechan saw Kemp out to field his cross with Hawkins poised on the far post and then Meechan set up Galliford whose hurried shot went well wide of target. The second half was a much more open affair. After 50 minutes Hawkins had a good shout for a penalty waved away after he had been baulked by Simpson and two minutes later slightly against the run of play Stratford went ahead. St Neots conceded a free kick 30 yards in an almost central position and despite building a three man defensive wall they saw Robert Thompson-Brown strike the ball inside the wall and beyond the despairing dive of Danny Gay. This setback seemed to inspire St Neots to greater effort and a crosscum shot by Hawkins went over the head of Kemp to deflect off the top of the cross bar. Meechan volleyed wide and Hawkins shot over the bar but St Neots were on top and deservedly levelled after 64 minutes when Mat Mitchel-King headed
down a Tom Ward free kick and Tom Meechan netted from a narrow angle. With substitutions by both sides the game lost some rhythm and after 71 minutes Stratford regained the lead as substitute Tyrone Fagan knocked down a Simeon Tulloch cross for Joe Halsall to force the ball home. However within sixty seconds parity was regained as from a great cross by Bamoussa Cisse who had outwitted his marker close to the bye line Tom Meechan was perfectly placed to net his second goal of the game. He might have had a hat trick in the next attack but clear of the defence he was cynically brought down outside the area by goalkeeper Kemp who seemed very fortunate only to be shown a yellow card. As the game moved into added time both sides could have snatched a match winning goal. For St Neots Tom Ward produced a spectacular goal line clearance at the expense of a corner and substitute Luke Trotman making his home debut saw his shot rebound off the legs of a defender. It must be seen as two points lost as St Neots continue to seek their first Saturday afternoon victory of the season. John Walker

Welcome to the Officials, Players and Supporters of Biggleswade Town for todays match. Also a special welcome to the ex St Neots Town players now playing at Biggleswade, you are all very welcome. Moving on from my comments from last weeks Stratford programme and yes they were in part quite cutting but I really did mean every single word that I said in those notes. I very much doubt if the people I was referring to would have read those notes as I very much doubt that they even attend many games and if they do certainly do not support the club by purchasing a matchday programme. So the tirade of what I can only call as they say in the social media trolling goes on.
THE MACK IS BACK!
PAGE 12 /
When I get tweets form people like The Bolton Family who say “I have supported St Neots Town through good and bad times and always will” makes me feel so much better and there are plenty of others who say the same things.
most times we do and got level only to let another soft goal in.
The very odd thing about this is we are the most successful we have ever been as a club yet these people still have to grind out the same old thing because well “because they do”.
Our goal scoring record this season is so far (before the Weymouth match) is the “Best” in the division with a total of fifteen goals in five games an average of three goals a game so nothing wrong there. We have though conceded nine goals being the most goals against out of the top fifteen clubs in the division.
So please go away as your comments will never have any impact on what we do at our club. Moving on to the Stratford match and yes it was a little disappointing in the fact that the first half we were in total control and our stats suggested at half time there was only going to be one winner in that game. Unfortunately you do not allow for the soft first goal Stratford scored which immediately put us on the back foot, but we came back as

The resulting Draw was probably the right result considering the early Christmas presents we gave our opponents that day. In saying that we have done that in every game except the Leamington match of which was by far our toughest Match so far.
That certainly shows us something for sure. It’s not the system we play as we create many chances and score plenty of goals. It’s the management of the game we need to improve and no its not as most people think the defence it’s the team as a whole not doing their jobs right when we concede. We are in sixth place in the division, played our longest journey away from home, played two of the
TRUE SUPPORTERS OF OUR GREAT CLUB
teams that will be in the top five come the end of the season in Leamington and Poole Town and scored the most goals in the division. So in my eyes we are in a very good place at the moment and with Drew available in a couple of weeks and Remy to come back fresh for the second half of the season our goal scoring options look very good indeed. Work on the training pitch to stop conceding some very soft goals and we will be in a great position to consolidate our promotion push.
“the Southern League Premier Division is probably the hardest league to play in the whole country” As it is shown week in week out “Every Team” can beat each other on their day in tis league and many teams have more than just that one-day. Its pointless me asking for those doubters to throw their weight behind the club because they like to make themselves heard.
But I do know and take comfort that we have many supporters like the Bolton Family who support the club whatever and by the way your Drum can he heard as far away as the Post office in Huntingdon Road now that’s what I call banging the drum for the team. All for one and one for all Mike
As they say “crisis? what crisis?” five games in and a whole season to play for. I did have a laugh when someone said seven out of fifteen points have been dropped already, come on this is not park football it’s real tough mans football in a real football league. Chelsea, my other team have dropped 5 points out of nine and they are Champions of England. But people will say, but that’s a very hard league to play in, well I’ve got news for you the Southern League Premier Division is probably the hardest league to play in the whole country. Stanley Victor “Stan” Collymore (born 22 January 1971) is a retired English football player who played as a centre-forward from 1990 to 2001. He held the English transfer record when he moved from Nottingham Forest to Liverpool for £8.5 million in 1995 and was capped three times at senior level by the England national football team. He is currently a football pundit. He played three times for England under Terry Venables.
Stan played his nonleague football with Stafford Rangers. It was there he caught the eye of several football league clubs by demonstrating the ability to score spectacular goals before being given his chance as a full-time professional with Crystal Palace at the age of 19, when he signed for them in December 1990. After nearly two years with Crystal Palace mainly being understudy to Ian Wright and Mark Bright he moved to Southend United helping them keep in division one by scoring 18 goals in just 31 first team appearances.
of clubs were lining up to sign Stan including Newcastle and Everton but it was Liverpool who he was destined to go for a transfer £8.5m Then followed clubs nearer his home in Aston Villa and Leicester City.
That caught the eye of Frank Clarke the Nottingham Forest manager who willing paid an initial £2million for his services. Being successful at Forest who had then just been relegated from the Premier division a whole host

Jacob Schilt and Matt Grimstone were on their way to play for Worthing when an aircraft crashed during the Shoreham airshow. The pair are believed to have died when the Hawker Hunter aircraft hit the car that they were in on the A27 at Shoreham. Nine others are believed to have died in the crash, including personal trainer Matt Jones, 24, from Littlehampton. The club said: “Worthing United Football Club players Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt are both believed to be among the victims of yesterday’s tragic Shoreham airshow crash. “Grimbles was our first team goalkeeper, 23 years of age and a huge talent, quiet and reserved but a brilliant player with a huge potential to go further in the game. “Jacob, who was also 23 years of age, small in stature and a tenacious midfielder, also very skilful with an eye for goal. “They were both essential members of last season’s double-winning squad, the most successful season in the club’s history. “At this point we don’t know how or if we will cope with this. Worthing United is a family, part of the football family. “We have been moved by the number of tributes to them that we have received from our fellow clubs and from the public.

Hungerford Town boss urges back to basics Hungerford Town manager Bobby Wilkinson has urged his side to return to its ‘underdog’ roots to beat the heightened level of expectation that follows last season’s play-off charge. Hungerford have lost only once in four outings, but have blown 2-0 leads in each of their last two games and have yet to get this seasons moving at full pace. “The disappointing thing is we were brilliant to get into those positions when we were leading, and Dorchester were the first team put three past us in years. “The problem is we are victims of our success now,” he added. “Everybody is saying we should be beating these teams, but we’ve got no right to go out there and beat them, we have to work for it.” “People have to stop thinking that we’re going to win every home again just because we did last year. Let’s just relax and enjoy the football and see where it takes us.”
Hungerford have Paul Strudley back on duty after ex-Reading goalkeeper Dan Lincoln helped out for two games before joining Conference South club Hayes and Yeading this week. Skipper Mark Draycott and defender Jon Boardman are available before starting suspensions while striker Stefan Brown is a 50-50 hope.

Unbeaten in their first three matches this season the Waders had briefly topped the table before coming unstuck at neighbours Dunstable. A very special welcome for our next Southern League Premier Division engagement with close neighbours Biggleswade Town our visitors this afternoon. The Waders have been in the Premier Division of the Southern League for two seasons after winning their way up to Step Three at the end of the 2012/13 season via the play offs. They won promotion the hard way with two away victories and have finished 9th and 19th in the top flight since that promotion.
countless times in Cup competitions including the FA Cup, the FA Trophy, the East Anglian Cup and of course the Hinchingbrooke Cup. This will be our fifth meeting at Step Three and so far it is all very balanced with two draws and a win apiece in our four previous meetings. The two clubs have close connections on the playing side as well with Gavin Hoyte, Ryan Frater and Jay Davies all having moved on from the PremierPlus Stadium to Biggleswade.
However unbeaten in their first three matches this season they briefly topped the table before coming unstuck at neighbours Dunstable Town. Our older supporters may remember us crossing swords with Biggleswade Town in the United Counties League back in the 1970’s but over the years we have met
Our visitors have the reputation as doughty cup fighters and after reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup two seasons ago they reached the Third Qualifying Round last season before losing to Maidstone United in front of their biggest crowd of the season. John Walker

CLUB HISTORY Biggleswade Town was formed in 1874 as ‘Biggleswade FC’ and were founder members of the Biggleswade and District League winning the championship at the first attempt in 1902/03. They also won the Bedfordshire Senior Cup that season for the first of eight occasions. They were in the FA Cup as early as 1904 losing to Watford and later in the FA Cup they reached the fourth qualifying round on three occasions - in 1907/08, 1929/30 and again in 1936/37. After a lengthy spell in either the Biggleswade and District League or the Bedford League the Club joined the UCL (then called the Northants League) in 1920/21. Their best finish in that league was 3rd in 1935. After the War they had five seasons in the Spartan League before rejoining the UCL

and had ten years in the Eastern Counties League before reverting once again to the UCL. They also had a spell in the old South Midlands League where they became well established. 1991/92 saw them win the SML Premier Division Cup and of course floodlighting had been added in 1989. 1992/93 proved to be their record year for although they lost the Beds Premier Cup over two legs to Luton Town they finished up with four trophies - the SML Challenge Trophy, the Hinchingbrooke Cup, the Hunts Premier Cup and the Jesse Piggott Trophy. However when the merger of the Spartan and South Midland Leagues took place they found themselves in the Senior Division and they finished fifth in their first season.
Moving up to date in 2008/09 the Waders moved to their brand new Carlsberg Stadium and made it a memorable season by clinching promotion to the Zamaretto League Central Division as Champions of the South Midlands League Premier Division. During that season they enjoyed a memorable FA Vase run beating Wivenhoe, Croydon and Market Drayton Town before having to travel to Whitley Bay in the quarter final. That is where they met their Waterloo against a side destined to go on to win the trophy at Wembley Stadium. However promotion was won and a place in the Zamaretto Central Division which was a testing experience but they survived a torrid start to finish twelfth in the final table. That was an excellent learning curve on which they built their season. In
2010/11 in a very tight fought finish they finished fourth and reached the play offs but were beaten by third placed Daventry Town who themselves were beaten in the playoff final by Hitchin Town. The next season they finished eighth after being close to a play-off place at Easter and then the next season they improved to a fourth placed finish before battling their way to promotion via the play offs. Two seasons ago they finished ninth in the Premier Division of the Southern League and also reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup losing to Stourbridge. Last season their fortunes dipped as they finished nineteenth in the final table – still eight points clear of the relegation zone.

THE WADERS CHRIS NUNN – MANAGER When Chris arrived at the club in November 2006 it looked certain that the club were heading towards relegation. Chris steadied the ship by bringing in new ideas and players and the results started to go the right way but there was still a nervous last day of the season where relegation was a possibility but the team won and Chris was able to make plans for the next season. The following season saw new players and a new attitude saw the team finish third in the league. No one could have predicted what the 2008 -09 season would hold for the Club as Chris guided the team to the quarter final of the FA Vase and the clubs most succesful season when they won the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division title and promotion to Step 4 football. 2012-13 saw a successful campaign to achieve promotion into the Calor Premier League First season finished 9th and last season avoided relegation. GREENIES GREETINGS
Exciting times on and off the pitch Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Premier Plus Stadium, home of St Neots Town Football Club and The Mick George Academy, for today’s Evostik League Southern Premier Division game. Today we extend a very warm welcome to our friends and near neighbours at Biggleswade Town and we hope that their players, officials and of course, their travelling supporters enjoy the brief visit here before hopping back over the county border into Bedfordshire this coming tea-time. Due to printing deadlines, these notes have been written before the long trek to Weymouth on Saturday so obviously the result of that game is still unknown however in recent games down at the Bob Lucas Stadium, we have performed quite well, winning 2-1 at the end of the 2013/14 season and narrowly losing 1-0 last season so hopefully, we will be coming into today’s match high on confidence and who would bet against Hot Shot Tom Meechan (below) adding to his haul of eight goals in five games prior to Saturday? Last Saturday saw us entertain one of the division’s new boys, Stratford
Town and the two sides played out an entertaining two-two draw in conditions which are usually reserved for teams going abroad to pre season training camps.
new classroom unit and now Mick George coming on board to sponsor the Academy, the future of the club and local post 16 students really is in safe hands.
After twice going behind, hot shot Tom Meechan (pronounced Meekan) struck twice to ensure honours ended even, the second goal a bullet header from six yards, this after substitute Bamoussa Cisse had supplied the ammunition as he produced a pinpoint cross to his strike partner.
I have a vested interest in the development of the Learning Partnership as my son Charlie, who, I’m sure most of the home supporters know, has signed up for the next two/ three years and will be joining the forty or so other full time scholars as they embark on their pathway to furthering their education and obtaining top quality football coaching and representing the club.
This game saw the opening of our Tuck Shop, located pitchside outside the Gregory Suite. This matchday facility should help to ease the queues at both our bars and food outlets so if it’s cold soft drinks, chocolate, sweets and crisps you would like to purchase, this is the place to go. Exciting times on and off the pitch here as the Academy / Learning Partnership grows week on week and what with the acquisition of the
Five years ago, you could drive up to the club during the week and you were lucky if the place was open and who would have thought that the club would now be a thriving, hive of activity every day of the working week with full time scholars and local clubs and societies using the facilities. Fantastic work by everyone behind the scenes who has contributed to the growth and continual improvement of this fantastic club, the one we can all be very proud of. Ok then, back to today’s game and it’s sure to be a cracker with it being a local derby and our visitors having a few ex Saints in their side adding to the spice so please, play your part on the sidelines too, plenty of noise and backing for the lads would be great.
SEE YOU LATER!

THE MICK GEORGE ACADEMY St Neots Town FC are extremely pleased to announce that they have recently secured a working partnership with Mick George Ltd and as such the ‘Academy’ will be named ‘The Mick George Academy’. Lee Kearns, Managing Director at St Neots Town FC said: “These are exciting times and to be working so closely with Mick George Ltd is a feather in our cap.
Kearns continued: ‘’The media exposure of a partnership of this stature can only be a plus point, and something that both parties are keen to exploit.
Our ‘Academy and Scholarship’ programmes are both really starting to blossom under the guidance of Iain Parr and Andy Davis and to have a prestigious brand such as Mick George Ltd on board feels like a fantastic opportunity for all concerned.
And the funds received will be invaluable to the club in its ongoing quest to improve.’’
The ‘Academy’ is an integral part of the football clubs portfolio and to get this support, speaks volumes about what we are trying to achieve.” The agreement will see the Mick George Ltd branding appear on all signage in and around the facilities at both the 3G Arena and entrance to Rowley Park.
Mick George Ltd. will also provide ongoing refuse solutions at all St. Neots Town amenities. Jon Stump, Finance Director of Mick George Ltd states: ‘’We continue to engage with our local communities through various channels. Sponsorship of sports clubs at grass roots and professional levels
PAGE 34 / ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V BIGGLESWADE TOWN ISSUE 04
is something that we are becoming increasingly familiar and proud. We approach these partnerships with the genuine feeling that we can really make a difference with the attributes we bring to the table.‘’ ‘’This summer we embarked on our first academy sponsorship with Peterborough United, this has gone from strength to strength and adds an extra dimension to our previous activity. You only have to look around the corner at the youth players coming through at Cambridge United FC and Peterborough United FC to recognise that the journey starts at lower levels with teams comparable to St. Neots Town FC, and we welcome the opportunity to support that development process wherever feasible.’’
BAMOUSSA CISSE
INTRODUCING
RYAN HAWKINS Ryan joined the club in June 2015 from Dereham on a two year contract for an undisclosed fee. A very versatile player his favourite playing position is wide midfield but he has played up front or full back. Last season with his previous club Ryan scored 24 goals and was voted player of the season. Because of injuries Ryan has started the season up front making a formidable partnership with Tom Meechan. A great signing for the Saints.

CHIPPENHAM TOWN Our next away day takes us down the M4 to Whiltshire and to Hardenhuish Park the home of Chippenham Town. Chippenham have had a storming start to the season winning their first 4 games to go top of the league with an outstanding win away to Poole Town. As we know well it is always a very hard game at home or away against Chippenham and this fixture will be no different.
Turn left and follow signs to town centre. Ground is 1km on left hand side adjacent to pedestrian controlled traffic lights. Car/Coach park next to traffic lights.
HARDENHUISH PARK Bristol Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN14 6LR Wheelchair Access: Yes Matchday Magazine: ÂŁ2 Capacity: 2,815 (500 seated) Round Trip from (PE19 6SL): 230 Miles
It seems they had signed a very good striker in Andy Sandell from Newport he has also played for Wycombe in league football so a real threat to any team. No doubt we with our support will make the day seem like a home game and hopefully we can come away with a result. DIRECTIONS: Exit 17 from M4. YOU’RE never far away from a “oh I remember him” or a “I used to enjoy watching that fella” when sitting down to watch TV on a Saturday evening. And no, I’m not talking about the ridiculous amounts of Dad’s Army and Only Fools and Horses repeats on monotonous channels like Dave. I am, of course, referring to the beautiful game.
Just last week, former England C, Hinckley United and Luton Town forward Andre Gray finally sealed a move away from Brentford – signing for Championship rivals Burnley. The fee? A staggering £9m!
It seems you can’t get through an episode of the new Football League Tonight or even the good old Match of the Day without seeing a former Non-League star light up the screen.
This is the same Andre Gray that was discarded by both Wolves and Shrewsbury Town, becoming yet another promising youth player tossed on the Non-League scrapheap. Full credit must go to him for knuckling down and working his way back up. Oh how Wolves and the Shrews must regret their decisions now. I’m sure Luton Town, who could earn up to £1.8m from their sell-on clause, are glad they took a punt.
Youngsters in the semi-professional ranks are constantly told that if you work hard enough, you could well get a chance in the full-time game. And the evidence is there for everybody to see.
A couple of other former NonLeague strikers making their names on the big stage are Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson and Charlie Austin of QPR – although for how much longer nobody knows.
In yet another summer where transfer fees have inflated beyond belief and millions are exchanging hands like monopoly money, it’s clear to see that Non-League players provide fantastic value. For little outlay, clubs in the lower reaches of the Football League can take a punt and with some of the figures quoted, and already spent, on former semi-pro stars, it seems a no brainer.

Wilson scored a predatory hat-trick at West Ham to give his side a 4-3 win and often points out that his spells on loan at Kettering and Tamworth – both in the Conference at the time – were key to his progression.
ST NEOTS TOWN F.C. V BIGGLESWADE TOWN ISSUE 04
I don’t think many who saw him in those spells, in which he scored twice in 20 appearances, would have predicted his current success but it was vital in getting Wilson – used to the cushty life in professional academies – to “man up”. Just a couple of weeks ago, Austin returned to former club Poole Town to watch the Dolphins take on Hungerford in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier. In the modern age of football in which mercenaries run wild, it’s refreshing to see a man who has climbed from the bottom to the very top remember his roots. His goal-laden spell in 2008 and 2009 was impressive but I’m sure even the most diehard Poole supporter would admit they couldn’t see Austin being valued at £15m just six years later! There are also great stories elsewhere with the likes of former Chippenham defender Tyrone Mings, signed by Bournemouth for £8m, and Hull’s Sam Clucas who was working in a Debenham’s cafe not too long ago. While the price of both tickets and transfer fees skyrockets at the top level of the game, Non-League once again proves it can’t be beaten when it comes to value for money.
