New Dates for the diary

Good evening everyone and welcome back to the Premier Plus Stadium for tonight’s BuildBase FA Trophy First Round Proper tie. Tonight we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Kings Langley Football Club and we home you all have a safe and enjoyable stay with us here in Cambridgeshire before safely travelling home later tonight. Well here we are, back playing, albeit briefly, after a month away due to Lockdown 2.0. With member clubs of the Trident leagues (Southern, Northern and Isthmian) voting in favour of continuing a pause of league games, depending on the outcome of tonight’s game, this could be our last competitive game for a while. There will be a review of a possible restart date once the government makes its first review of the Tier system on December 16th so we all have our fingers crossed on that one. Sadly, the rules of the new Tier system mean that we are unable to serve alcohol at tonight’s game but we have managed to ensure that we have the right documentation in place to be able to serve hot food and beverages on what is no doubt going to be a cold night. Don’t forget Replica Shirts are now available to buy (just in time for Christmas), costing £50. Full details of sizing etc can be found on the Website and our Social Media platforms. Right, back to tonight’s game. Not the best preparation for either team ahead of the game to be honest but I’m sure Barry and Sean will have the lads fired up and ready to go. The winner of tonight’s tie will play in the Second Round Proper, ties to be played midweek, next week. Get behind the lads from the first whistle, one team on and off the pitch.

Be Loud, Be Proud, Be A Saint

It’s great to welcome everybody back to our stadium. And on behalf of everyone at St Neots Town, welcome to the players, staff and officials of Kings Langley.

It’s really great to be back after this second lockdown and I hope there is an excitement amongst our supporters to see us back out on the pitch. We were in such a good place a few weeks ago. We had hit really good form. Playing attractive football, scoring freely and winning football matches. I hope that we can take that form into this trophy game, but the truth is we’re totally unprepared for the fixture. We will have had 2 training sessions since our win at Barton Rovers on the 3rd of November. Its actually dangerous asking the players to compete so soon after being told to stay at home for 5 weeks. I guess it’s the same for everybody but it shouldn’t be the case and we shouldn’t be asked to compete without an appropriate preparation time. However, one thing I do feel confident about is the character, mentality and ability of my players. So, despite being deconditioned, I’m sure they’ll dig deep and put on a performance to make you proud. Get right behind them as I’m sure there will be some heavy legs! For me, the uncertainty about the restart of the league is the worst thing about it. I really believe in preparation and processes when you want to achieve in football which have been almost impossible in the circumstances. Hopefully, we will have a clear idea of what we’re doing sooner rather than later. Thank you for your support. At the very least we’ll make our lungs burn for you tonight. Best wishes Barry

Saints Academy We are very proud of our boys and girls development pathway. that runs from U8’s through to U16’s .

The Academy

Most boys and girls that go through the clubs Academy seamlessly move onto our Post 16 sports Scholarship programme We pride ourselves on developing players in a safe structured environment, working to a coaching syllabus which has given us the capability to help both talented boys and girls reach their full potential. The current St Neots Town FC Academy was established in 2012 under the guidance of the Clubs Director of Football and Academy manager Iain Parr. Our Ethos Iain Parr-Director of Football/Academy Manager "At SNTFC Academy, we have a minimum of 2 coaches in each age group and a lead coach to oversee u8’s-u11, u12-14’s & u15-18’s. My Job as Academy Manager is to create a stable, structured, safe environment for young players to develop and fore-fill their potential. The player’s individual development comes before winning football matches unlike lots of other grassroots clubs, but if we get the squad balance right, players and parents buy into the philosophy, the team will be competitive and players will progress. All coaching staff follow an annual coaching syllabus and players have IDP (individual development plan) to complete to aid development” All teams train twice a week and play Saturday fixtures, currently out u8’s-12’s play in the Cambs leagues and the u13-16’s play JPL (Junior Premier League), our Elite boys U18’s play in the Floodlit Eastern Counties and the Elite Girls U18’s play on the stadium pitch Saturday mornings in the S-tec Girls League

FA TROPHY – THIRD ROUND QUALIFYING St Neots Town

6

Worksop Town

1

Seven goals and three red cards made this a memorable afternoon both for good and bad. The focal and almost certainly defining point of the match came at half time as the players left the field. An altercation involving many of the players resulted in red cards for St Neots defender Dequane Wilson-Braithwaite, Worksop skipper Gavon Allott and goalkeeper Seb Malkowski, and saw the match resume with ten players for the home side and nine for the visitors. During the match there were a further six cautions issued (two St Neots – four Worksop) so from a disciplinary point of view it was a contest best forgotten. However, St Neots ruthlessly capitalised on their numerical advantage in the second half, and playing against a replacement player in goal who made several creditable saves, they recorded their biggest ever victory in the competition to reach the First Round Proper for the first time ever. Manager Barry Corr named an unchanged starting line-up from that which had convincingly beaten Biggleswade FC in midweek, whilst the visitors with only one previous defeat this season looked to be testing opponents. Under strict COVID arrangements the spectators were segregated and unable to move freely around the ground but there was a good challenging atmosphere with both sets of supporters vocal. The first half was extremely competitive with the visitors just shading the opening exchanges thanks to their positive approach. However, St Neots had the first real chance when hesitancy in the visiting defence saw the ball blocked on the line, but Worksop then broke quickly to the other end where Louis Chadwick had to produce a full length save to keep his goal intact. Leon Lobjoit had a shot on the turn blocked but another quick break from defence brought the opening goal for the visitors, as Michael Dunn moved inside two defenders to beat Louis Chadwick with a low finish. In reply St Neots were often careless with their passing but were now dominating possession as Ben Worman had a shot pushed for a corner from which defender Sam Goode sent a free header across the face of goal. When Lobjoit was upended on the edge of the box, Lewis Simper sent his free kick narrowly over the bar and then Jake Battersby had a shot deflected for a corner. Home pressure deservedly brought an equaliser a minute before the break when Lewis Simper stole in at the far post to convert a curling cross from Lobjoit and in added first half time Goode clashed with Scott Brown and both were booked and this exchange just preceded the half time hiatus.

When the game resumed St Neots produced some positive and classy football to take advantage of their extra player. Substitute visiting goalkeeper Kian Johnson made an excellent save from Worman but after 50 minutes he was left helpless by a Leon Lobjoit chip that crept in under the crossbar to put St Neots in front. St Neots really took command nine minutes later when the excellent Ben Worman let fly from 35 yards to make the score 3-1. Now Johnson was kept under constant pressure as he made two classy saves to deny Worman and Lobjoit again in successive attacks. To further boost their superior possession St Neots sent on Ryan Robbins for Amu and he arrived in time to see the impressive Ben Worman waltz past two defenders and round the advancing keeper to claim his second goal of the half. Robbins on the pitch for less than ten minutes then joined the party notching goal number five for his side after clever play by Lee Watkins, before Simper was denied a second goal by the Johnson save of the match. However, it was appropriate that St Neots should round off their victory with a flourish, and this they did eight minutes from time when Simper split the tiring visiting defence to set up Leon Lobjoit for his eighth goal of the season in just his seventh appearance.

St Neots: Louis Chadwick, Bennett, Battersby, Goode, Wilson-Braithwaite, Dickens, Watkins, Simper, Amu, Lobjoit, Worman Subs: Robbins (for Amu 67 mins), Smith (for Goode 80 mins), Luke Chadwick (for Worman 87 mins), Corr and Whitehall. SOUTHEN LEAGUE DIVISION ONE CENTRAL Barton Rovers

1

St Neots Town

2

St Neots moved into the COVID-19 month’s lockdown with a hard fought but welldeserved victory at Barton Rovers. It was their first victory over their Bedfordshire hosts since their relegation back to tier four, and their first away league victory this season, and it lifted them to the dizzy heights of third place in the league table as thy leapfrogged their hosts. Manager Barry Corr was delighted with the performance and result, achieved on the back of a gritty second half performance after they had come back from a goal behind in the first half. Leading scorer Leon Lobjoit was unwell, so this allowed Ryan Robbins back into the attack and he responded with his sixth goal of the season (from the penalty spot) in only his sixth start for the team. Also missing from the starting line-up was goalkeeper Louis Chadwick recalled by Parent club Cambridge United and he was replaced by George Whitehall. The opening phase was very evenly fought with Barton looking perhaps the more threatening in attack, with George Whitehall having to rush from his goal to clear after just four minutes as Nathan Tshikuna broke through the visiting defence. In St Neots first significant forward sortie, Arel Amu was foiled as home keeper Niall Cooper was also called into action, but Barton continued on the offensive as a lengthy effort from Bradley Bell clipped the outside of a goalpost, and then the busy Whitehall had to leave his line swiftly to collect the ball at the feet of Tony Burnett. Barton were rewarded for their positive start after 24 minutes when St Neots conceded a free kick 23 yards from goal in midfield and home skipper Charlie Smith skilfully curled a free kick over the defensive wall and into the corner of the net beyond the despairing dive of Whitehall. That setback seemed to spur the visitors and they responded swiftly with Robbins attempting a spectacular overhead kick that was too wide and the impressive Ben Worman testing the home keeper. Then after 34minutes Robbins burst into the penalty area to be upended by Lewis Thomas and he picked himself up to level the scores from the penalty spot. This was no less than St Neots deserved, and four minutes later a pinpoint cross from Jake Battersby picked our Ben Worman who put St Neots in front with his eighth goal of the campaign. Bell then began and finished a move just before half time but shot high over the bar and the half ended with Amu sending an effort on the turn just wide of the far post after a good run by Liam Bennett.

St Neots resumed after the break with another incisive move as another Bennett assist found the head of Robbins, but his powerful header went straight into the chest of the home custodian. Bennett then shot wide but with two substitutes boosting their attack, Barton were beginning to come more into the game. St Neots continued to threaten on the break and Lewis Simper brought a good save from Cooper before sending a second effort wide and clever midfield interplay. Barton had adopted a more attacking approach and Tshikuna should have done better than his effort over the bar after the visiting defence had been breached. Clear chances for either side were limited as the respective defences dominated but it was Barton who were making the more positive forward moves as full time approached. In a midfield flare up Simper and Thomas were both booked and there was a threating moment on the stroke of full time when St Neots conceded a free kick in a similar position from where they had conceded their goal. However, this time Whitehall was equal to Smith’s curled free kick as he pushed the ball away for a corner. So the temporary (hopefully) suspension of the season many have come just at the wrong time for a St Neots team beginning to find a confident and effect rhythm.

St Neots: Whitehall, Bennett, Battersby, Goode, Wilson-Braithwaite, Dickens, Watkins, Simper, Robbins, Amu, Worman Subs: Smith (for Watkins 84 mins), Luke Chadwick (for Amu 84 mins), and Corr Cards: Simper (Y – 84 mins), Robbins (Y – 90+2 mins) Goals: Robbins – pen – (34 mins), Worman (38 mins) Barton: Cooper, Jibodu, Ward, Smith, Phelan, Thomas, Regis, Osobu, Bell, Tshikuna, Burnett Subs: Dummett (for Osobu 60 mins), Powell (for Regis 60 mins), Palmer, Andrews and Tigwell. Cards: Thomas (Y – 84 mins) Goals: Smith (22 mins) Referee: xxx (Northampton) Attendance: 221 John Walker

HISTORY Kings Langley Football Club is one of the oldest in Hertfordshire, having been formed in 1886, with the village doctor, Frederick Fisher as its first Chairman. Founder members of the West Herts League in the 1891-92 season, Kings Langley also won the St. Mary’s Cup in front of 3,500 people at the Watford Recreation Ground in the same season, retaining it the next year and losing the final on a replay the following year. Early pitches were at Groomes Meadow, Blackwell Meadow and Kings Langley Common and although it has been stated that the Club did not move to Home Park until 1913, the pitch was certainly hosting a 1898-99 match against Hemel Hempstead Town in front of 300 spectators. After slipping down the divisions, Kings Langley’s first league honour came in 1911-12, winning the Division 3 title, followed by the Division 2 Championship in 1919-20. The following two seasons saw an uncomfortable time in the Herts County League, before returning to the West Herts Division 1 in 1922-23. A similar drop down the divisions led to the Club folding in February of 1930, only to be reformed four months later, with a Division 2 Championship and Webster Cup triumph at the end of the first season. The return to the top flight lasted only two seasons, but two years later Kings Langley topped Division 2 for their fourth divisional title. 1934 saw a new pavilion built on Home Park and this was opened by the future F.I.F.A. president, Sir Stanley Rous, who kept a close interest with his local club. The Herts County League was then reformed, but Langley took the radical step of joining the Southern Olympian League, taking the second and first division titles in successive years and spending two seasons in the Premier until the outbreak of war. A 1939 application to play in the F A Cup was accepted in the post of 1945, leaving Kings Langley to raise a side in four weeks! Amazingly, the Preliminary round was negotiated before losing in the first Qualifying round. Missing the first season, Kings were back in the Herts County League, gaining promotion from Division Two in 1946-47. In the five seasons that followed, the First Division title was won twice, runners up spot achieved twice and the St. Mary’s Cup won after a 58 year gap. Kings Langley regularly competed in the F A Amateur Cup and in September 1949 entertained the famous amateurs of Corinthian Casuals. Although losing 1-3, the match provided plenty of local interest with over 500 watching the game. Three successful seasons in the Parthenon League followed, but travelling expenses were high, so it was back to the Herts County League in 1955-56 for a tenure that would last for the next 45 years. Gradual improvement led to back to back Premier League titles in 1965-66 and 1966-67, plus a Herts Charity Shield triumph (66-67) and the Aubrey Cup in 1967-68. This was probably the first ‘golden period in the club’s history and although the 1971-72 season saw the St. Mary’s Cup won again, relegation followed a year later. Three seasons in Division One culminated with promotion as champions, the forerunner of two seasons up, two seasons down, before another promotion was overshadowed by the loss of Home Park to redevelopment in 1980. A nomadic existence followed, playing at Oxhey, Rolls Royce and Buncefield Lane and finally the Leavesden hospital ground, until the first weekend of March 1997 saw a dream finally realised as Kings Langley’s senior and junior teams took up the residence of their new ground at Hempstead Road under the banner of the Associated Football Clubs of Kings Langley.

The reformation of Kings Langley Youth Football Club in 1989 after a 19 year absence was to play its part, as both junior and senior supporters combined to launch a project of obtaining the Hempstead Road land, laying two pitches and building a pavilion. Sponsors included the National Lottery, Herts. F A, Dacorum Borough Council, Kings Langley Parish Council and the club’s great benefactor, Graham Gaywood, who tragically passed away so soon after the dream was realised. The ground is named Gaywood Park as a tribute to someone who made it all possible. However, the new home did not bring an immediate turnabout in results and despite winning the Rickmansworth Charity Cup, Langley were involved in relegation battles for the next two seasons. Form improved and as the first season of a new century ended, a top four finish was achieved. This was followed by the heartbreak of losing the title race on goal difference in 2000-01 and the decision was taken that the time was right to apply for a higher level of football. Promotion was accepted to the Spartan South Midlands League at Division One level and while the club held its own with three mid table finishes, the continuing upgrading of ground requirements by the League at this level saw relegation to Division Two in 2003-04. The first season in the lower tier was disappointing and Steve Heath was appointed manager for the next campaign. A sixth place was followed by the runners up spot the next season, but ground standards were still an issue and promotion was denied. 2007-08 saw magnificent treble success of League, Division 2 Cup and the retention of the Herts Intermediate Cup This included a club record run of 47 consecutive matches unbeaten in all competitions between 1509-07 and 15-10-08. Promotion was granted on the basis of floodlights being in operation by late March 2009, but the slow turning wheels of the Local Planning system meant that this deadline was missed by a matter of weeks. Although seating improvements had been made in anticipation of Premier status, this was not considered and the club remained in Division One. Hard work ensured that the facilities accorded with standards for Step 5 in the pyramid, but by the start of the 2009-10 season, Steve Heath had moved on. He was succeeded by the experienced Paul Hobbs, who took a new young side to an encouraging 7 th placed finish, as well as the semi-finals of the Herts F A Senior Centenary Cup and quarter finals of the Challenge Trophy and Division One Cup. 2010-11 saw his emerging side further improve to third place and narrowly miss promotion, as the Club celebrated its 125 th anniversary. 2011-12. The Club took fourth place in Spartan South Midlands League Division 1, won the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the first time and were Herts Charity Shield & Division One Cup runners up. Paul Hobbs retired at end of season and Ritchie Hanlon & Paul Hughes were appointed joint managers. 2012-13. An encouraging sixth place in SSML Division 1 was achieved, with the bonus of winning the League Division 1 Cup 2013-14. Kings were Division 1 Runners Up and promoted to SSML Premier Division. Winners of the League Division 1 Cup, retaining trophy. 2014-15. Became SSML Premier Division champions at first attempt and won promotion to Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central. Achieved the double by winning the Challenge Trophy (League Cup). 2015-16. Won the third consecutive promotion by finishing as champions of the Southern League Division 1 Central.

2016-17. A turbulent season saw the departure of Paul Hughes and Ritchie Hanlon at the end of October and the return of Paul Hobbs as manager. The season was a battle against relegation from the Southern League Premier in the debut season and back to back wins in the last two games ensured safety. 2017-18. The reorganisation of Steps 3 and 4 for 2018-19 meant only one team was relegated and while failing to improve on last season’s record, Kings were never in danger. Steve Conroy was promoted from coach to manager in December, succeeding Paul Hobbs. 2018-19. Achieved highest placed position in the history of the Club, finishing sixth and missing the play offs by one point. Steve Conroy departed at the end of the season due to failure to reach a financial agreement. 2019-20. Dean Barker appointed manager, but was succeeded in September by Chris Cummins. Club moved laterally to Southern League Central. Ten match unbeaten run at start of 2020 took Kings to edge of play offs before season was concluded in March due to global pandemic. Youth section continues to flourish and now boasts twenty two boys youth teams and three girls youth teams, ranging from Under Six up to Under Eighteen. The club has now been granted FA Charter status and looks to further improve its facilities as well as to make further progress up the football pyramid.
